The Tibetan Plateau (TP), known as earth's "Third Pole," influences regional and even global weather and climate systems through its mechanical and thermal‐dynamical forcing. Near‐surface (2 m) air temperature (Ta) and surface (skin) temperature (Ts) are two crucial parameters of land–atmosphere interactions and climate change. Their difference (ΔT = Ts − Ta) determines the heating source over the TP that drives the Asian summer monsoon. This study focuses on climatology, inter‐annual variability, and long‐term trend of ΔT over the TP in the last four decades (1979–2018), based on four latest reanalysis datasets including ERA‐Interim, ERA5, MERRA2, and JRA55, along with observational data. We show that ΔT‐based different datasets display fairly different climatology in terms of seasonality, spatial distribution, and long‐term trend. ΔT exhibits a clear seasonality with negative value in winter and positive ones in summer despite different strengths and timings presented by the reanalyses. Along with global warming, all reanalyses except JRA55 exhibit obvious downwards trends of ΔT in a spatially non‐uniform way. The median ΔT among the four reanalyses features uniform decreases in all seasons, with the most distinct area on the northern TP, as well as the largest and least decreases in autumn and spring, respectively. Further analysis shows that the differences in ΔT are most likely associated with discrepancies in radiation forcing, snow cover, wind speed, and boundary layer height within the reanalyses. The present findings highlight the difficulty for the state‐of‐the‐art reanalyses to represent the climate change over the TP and point to possible factors behind the deficiencies identified. Evapotranspiration (ET) is an essential component of watershed hydrological cycle. Spatial-temporal variations analyses of evapotranspiration and potential evapotranspiration (PET) have remarkable theoretical and practical significances for understanding the interaction between climate changes and hydrological cycle and optimal allocation of water resources under global warming background. The MODIS-estimated ET agreed well with basin evapotranspiration from water balance principle methods in the study. The spatiotemporal variations results based on MOD16 ET data showed the following: (1) multiyear mean ET and PET were 464.2 mm and 1192.2 mm, and annual ET showed an upward trend at a rate of 3.48 mm/a, while PET decreased significantly at a rate of −8.18 mm/a. The annual ET trend showed a complemental relationship with PET; (2) at the seasonal scale, ET was highest in summer and least in winter, while PET was higher in spring and summer. The change of ET and PET in spring and summer had a great contribution to the annual variations; (3) ET and PET in the northern part were significantly stronger than those in the western and southern parts; (4) ET in cropland increased significantly, while PET decreased obviously in grass and forest; (5) changes of ET and PET were closely related to climatic factors. The rise in temperature caused the increase in ET and the decrease of wind speed contributed more to the decrease in PET. Precipitation plays an essential role in hydrological cycle, water resource availability, and ecological economics sustainable development both within the Qilian Mountains (QM) and its surrounding. On the basis of meteorological station records and reanalysis data sets, we investigate the variations of precipitation in the QM during 1960–2014 and their connection to the shifts of regional atmospheric water vapour. Results show that precipitation in the QM as a whole has experienced pronounced wetting at an annual rate of 6.95 mm/decade. Significant (at 95% confidence level) precipitation increase mainly occurs in JJA (June–August) and slightly in DJF (December–February). The evident increase of precipitation appears in the mid‐east of the QM. Furthermore, the increasing rates of annual, JJA, and SON (September–November) precipitation increase with elevation, indicating obvious elevation‐dependent precipitation increase in the QM. The atmospheric precipitable water (PW) for annual, JJA, and SON time series over the targeted region generally shows significant increasing trends, especially during 1979–2014. The meridional and zonal water vapour budgets positively and negatively contribute to the regional net water vapour budget, respectively. Moreover, we demonstrate that the zonal water vapour budgets are strongly intensified and meanwhile the meridional ones except in transitional seasons are weakened. Thus, regional net water vapour budgets for annual and seasonal time series are increased. All in all, the shifts of the regional atmospheric water vapour, such as the increases of PW and water vapour budget (referring to the zonal and regional net water vapour budgets), agree with the result that the QM precipitation increases from 1960 to 2014, which suggests the QM wetting trend is in connection with the changes of the atmospheric water vapour. ABSTRACT Drought is a recurrent natural disaster in northwestern China and it can have a substantial impact on the affected region; therefore, knowledge of drought variability is very important for drought adaptation and mitigation. However, the observed climate data are generally limited in length, which may hamper our understanding the full range of drought variability. Using tree-ring width measurements of 155 series from 81 Pinus tabulaeformis trees at three sites in the northern Min Mountains of northwestern China, the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index ( SPEI) for May-August from 1804 to 2011 were reconstructed, which account for 64.8% of the variance in the instrumental record over 1954-2011. The new reconstruction is generally consistent with other moisture reconstructions nearby. Two notable features of the SPEI reconstruction is the severe drought starting in the late 1990s and the gradual drying trend since 1954. These features are also apparent in areas located in the north boundaries of Eastern Asian Summer Monsoon ( EASM), which indicates that the study area may be affected by the EASM. ABSTRACT Studies of regional drought history will be helpful for understanding current hydroclimate variability with global warming as well as predicting future hydroclimate shifts. Long-term tree-ring records are scarce in the western Qilian Mountains of northwestern China, which is also the western boundary of the natural distribution of Qilian Juniper ( Juniperus przewalskii Kom.) in this area. Here, we present an 850-year ( AD 1161-2010) reconstruction of May-July self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index ( scPDSI) in the western Qilian Mountains that is based on two nearly millennia of ring-width chronologies derived from long-lived Qilian Juniper trees. The reconstruction suggests a relatively dry phase from the 15th century to the 18th century during the Little Ice Age ( LIA) and a relatively wet period over the past two centuries. This reconstruction is consistent with other tree-ring-based hydroclimatic reconstructions from the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, as well as the corresponding century-scale solar activity during the LIA. The three mega-drought periods ( AD 1260s-1340s, 1430s-1540s and 1640s-1740s) recorded by the tree-ring series also correspond to the Wolf, Spörer and Maunder solar activity minimum periods. Results of the multi-tape method analysis and wavelet analysis further confirmed the relationship between regional hydroclimate variability and solar activity forcing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of different RegCM4 land-surface schemes on Tibetan Plateau (TP) precipitation simulations were investigated. Two groups of ten-year (1992–2001) simulation experiments (hereafter referred to as BATS and CLM) were performed based on two land-surface schemes (BATS and CLM3.5, resp.) and were compared with observed data using the same domain, initial, and lateral boundary conditions, cumulus convective scheme, and spatial resolution. The results showed that the CLM monthly precipitation more closely matched the observed data compared with BATS. BATS and CLM both overestimated summer precipitation in the northern TP but underestimated summer precipitation in the southern TP. However, CLM, because of its detailed land-surface process descriptions, reduced the overestimated precipitation areas and magnitudes of BATS. Compared to CN05, the regional average summer precipitation in BATS and CLM was overestimated by 34.7% and underestimated by 24.7%, respectively. Higher soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and heating effects in the BATS experiment triggered changes in atmospheric circulation patterns over the TP. Moreover, BATS simulated the lower atmosphere as warmer and more humid and the upper atmosphere (~150 hPa) as colder than the CLM simulations; these characteristics likely increased the instability for moist convection and produced more summer precipitation. ABSTRACT On the basis of meteorological station records during 1961-2010, we investigate the variations of temperature and precipitation in the Qaidam Basin. Results show that climate warming is significant in the region of Qaidam Basin over the past 50 years, with an average warming rate of 0.53 °C 10a−1. The largest and smallest warming rate happened at Mangya station (0.89 °C 10a−1) and Lenghu station (0.24 °C 10a−1), respectively. Seasonal warming was greatest in winter at eight meteorological stations, ranging from 0.43 °C 10a−1 (Lenghu station) to 1.01 °C 10a−1 (Delingha station). Since 1961, the annual precipitation has increased with a rate of 7.38 mm 10a−1. Seasonal precipitation mainly increased in summer (4.02 mm 10a−1). The maximum precipitation increase occurred at Delingha station (25.09 mm 10a−1) and the minimum at Lenghu station (0.10 mm 10a−1). The elevation dependency of warming trends is unremarkable because most of the stations are located at lower altitudes. It is suggested that sunshine duration is related to the tendencies of temperature increase at different stations. Pollution emissions from industrial processes (i.e. brown clouds) and urbanization are the main factors contributing to the warming climate. Furthermore, the predominant weakening of zonal wind speed over the Tibetan Plateau resulted from the global warming also contributes to the climate warming in the Qaidam Basin. Consequently, the warming rate in the Qaidam Basin is much higher than in other regions over the Tibetan Plateau. Annual streamflow of the Yellow River has decreased in recent years (1980 to 2000) because of climate change and human activity. This decrease affects the environment and the lives of the people in the drainage area. Tree ring width chronologies from six sites in the headwaters of the Yellow River were developed to provide estimates of past Yellow River streamflow in order to place the recent flow reduction in a long-term context. The ring width indices of the six local Juniperus przewalski chronologies correlate significantly with the observed streamflow of the Yellow River recorded at the Tangnaihai hydrological station. Principal components analysis shows that the first principal component (PC) of the tree ring indices explains 49% of the streamflow variance. On the basis of this result, Yellow River streamflow was reconstructed for the past 593 years. Several severe droughts and low-flow events are recognized in the decades 1920-1930, 1820-1830, 1700-1710, 1590-1600, and 1480-1490. The most severe droughts in 1480-1490 were also recorded in other studies on the Tibetan Plateau. Regional historical climate archives further support the validity of our streamflow reconstruction. The reconstructed increase in streamflow during much of the twentieth century also coincides with generally wetter conditions in the Tienshan and Qilianshan Mountains of China, as well as in northern Pakistan and Mongolia. After the 1980s, our reconstruction indicates a decreasing trend in streamflow, which is cause for concern. According to the precipitation and δ18O data obtained during the GEWEX Asian Monsoon Experiment-Tibet Intensive Observation Period, based on the knowledge that δ18O is lower in precipitation formed from ocean air mass vapour than that from local evaporation vapour, the water vapour sources can be identified from the δ18O values in precipitation. We attempt to give the identification criterion of δ18O values in precipitation. The threshold values chosen to distinguish between ocean and local sources are δ18O < −20‰ and δ18O > −13‰ respectively. According to this criterion, the proportion of local evaporation-formed precipitation and ocean air-mass-formed precipitation in total precipitation was estimated. The average value of precipitation at three sites (NODA, Amdo and AQB) is 249·76 mm. Among this, precipitation formed directly by the ocean air mass vapour is 80·08 mm at most. Precipitation formed by water vapour evaporated from local places is 117·05 mm at least. That is to say that precipitation formed directly by the ocean air mass vapour accounts for 32·06% of the total precipitation at most. Precipitation formed by water vapour evaporated from local places accounts for 46·86% of the total precipitation at least.
