Introduction: Prior to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, studies of innovative telehealth perinatal care models showed similar clinical outcomes and perceived quality of care between groups receiving a combination of virtual video and in‐person visits. However, these studies included primarily White, English‐speaking participants, excluding those who were economically disenfranchised or did not speak English. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe perinatal patients' and providers' experiences with telehealth during and after the acute phase of the COVID‐19 pandemic to inform future utilization of telehealth to drive the delivery of high‐quality, accessible, and equitable perinatal care to diverse communities. Methods: This descriptive qualitative study included a purposive sample of 14 patients and 17 providers who received or provided perinatal care via telehealth in either a certified nurse‐midwifery practice or the nurse‐family partnership care model between March 2020 and April 2022. Maximum variation sampling offered a diverse population based on race, ethnicity, and rurality. Researchers conducted 2 rounds of semistructured interviews with a focus on understanding social and geographic context. Results: Six themes were identified through inductive analysis: (1) unexpected advantages of telehealth, (2) patient empowerment, (3) providers' fear of adverse outcomes, (4) concern for equitable care, (5) strategies to enhance the telehealth experience, and (6) strategies to address access to perinatal telehealth. Patients appreciated the increased ease and reduced cost of accessing visits, which led to fewer missed appointments. Health care providers saw great opportunity in telehealth but expressed concerns about accessibility for patients with language barriers or limited resources. Discussion: This study provides insight into priorities for continued telehealth utilization focused on providing equitable access to perinatal care. Rather than returning to practices from before the COVID‐19 pandemic formed from longstanding routines and perceived limitations, providers are encouraged to capitalize on the rapid innovations in telehealth to build a more effective, equitable, and patient‐centered approach to perinatal care. The Ediacaran–Cambrian Radiation marks the widespread appearance of metazoans and calcareous biomineralised hard parts. These innovations occurred during an interval of dynamic changes in marine redox and sea water chemistry. Here, changing carbonate mineralogy, Mg/Ca ratios and rare earth element concentrations including the relative abundance of cerium (Ce anomaly: Ceanom) are documented to track sea water oxygen levels, in well‐preserved early marine cements from shallow marine reefs from Cambrian Stages 2–4 (ca 525–512 Ma). First, integrating the mineralogical data with published records, several shifts in dominant carbonate mineralogy are inferred: 'dolomite‐aragonite seas' in the late Ediacaran; 'aragonite/high‐Mg calcite seas' in Cambrian Stage 2; a temporary shift to a 'calcite sea' during early Cambrian Stage 3; an 'aragonite sea' between late Cambrian Stage 3 and late Cambrian Stage 4, then a gradual shift from mixed 'aragonite–calcite seas' during the middle and upper Cambrian towards a 'calcite sea' by the early Ordovician. Second, based on measured mMg/Ca in early marine cements, calculated sea water mMg/Ca at 15 and 35°C ranges from 1.2 to 0.8 in Cambrian Stage 2, 0.7–0.4 in Stage 3 and 1.4–0.9 in Stage 4 respectively. Finally, analysed Ceanom data combined with existing Ceanom data suggest potentially three phases of global oxic expansion. First, a long‐lived phase of progressive oxygenation during the late Ediacaran to Fortunian (ca 550–540 Ma; average Ceanom from 0.99 to 0.41), and possibly two shorter phases during early Cambrian Stage 3 (ca 519 Ma; average Ceanom from 0.91 to 0.40) and Stage 4 (ca 512 Ma; average Ceanom from 1.02 to 0.49), bounded by intervals of more dominant anoxia. Summarising, these data demonstrate that early marine cements offer an underused and high‐resolution archive of shallow marine redox and sea water chemistry through this critical transition in Earth's evolution. Identification of processes driving carbonate diagenesis requires an accurate chronology, particularly along volcanic margins where complex mineral parageneses develop. The Cretaceous "Pre‐Salt" carbonates formed in the volcanic proto‐South Atlantic and are now extensive hydrocarbon reservoirs offshore Brazil and Angola. Primary and diagenetic textures strongly affect reservoir properties, but timings of deposition (c. Barremian–early Aptian) and diagenesis are poorly constrained. This study provides the first direct age measurements from offshore Pre‐Salt carbonates using in situ U–Pb geochronology. Depositional calcites from the Santos Basin (Brazil) do not preserve depositional ages, instead yielding an Albian recrystallization age of 106.9 ± 4.3 Ma. Dolomite rhombs and bridges have Palaeocene ages of 59.2 ± 5.3 Ma, and 58.0 ± 4.6 Ma, respectively. Calcite recrystallization was linked to the onset of oceanic spreading in the South Atlantic. Anti‐CD52 antibody (anti‐CD52‐Ab) leads to a rapid depletion of T and B cells, followed by reconstitution of immune cells with tolerogenic characteristics. However, very little is known about its effect on innate immune cells. In this study, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis mice were administered murine anti‐CD52‐Ab to investigate its effect on dendritic cells and monocytes/macrophages in the periphery lymphoid organs and the central nervous system (CNS). Our data show that blood and splenic innate immune cells exhibited significantly increased expression of MHC‐II and costimulatory molecules, which was associated with increased capacity of activating antigen‐specific T cells, at first day but not three weeks after five daily treatment with anti‐CD52‐Ab in comparison with controls. In contrast to the periphery, microglia and infiltrating macrophages in the CNS exhibited reduced expression levels of MHC‐II and costimulatory molecules after antibody treatment at both time‐points investigated when compared to controls. Furthermore, the transit response of peripheral innate immune cells to anti‐CD52‐Ab treatment was also observed in the lymphocyte‐deficient SCID mice, suggesting the changes are not a direct consequence of the mass depletion of lymphocytes in the periphery. Our study demonstrates a dynamic and tissue‐specific modulation of the innate immune cells in their phenotype and function following the antibody treatment. The findings of differential modulation of the microglia and infiltrating macrophages in the CNS in comparison with the innate immune cells in the peripheral organs support the CNS‐specific beneficial effect of alemtuzumab treatment on inhibiting neuroinflammation in multiple sclerosis patients. BACKGROUND: The green peach aphid Myzus persicae is a major pest of many crops around the world, causing direct damage and acting as a vector for several viruses. This species has developed resistance to several insecticides, resulting in a greater emphasis on nonchemical methods of control. The aphidophagous ladybird, Harmonia conformis, is one of several species to predate on this pest. H. conformis is native to Australia, but has been exported to New Zealand, the USA and Europe as a biological control agent for horticultural pests and has now become established in several regions. Despite these introductions, the ability of H. conformis to predate on M. persicae has not yet been quantified. To address this knowledge gap, we measured the potential success of this natural enemy and its functional response over a range of temperatures. RESULTS: H. conformis displayed a Type II response over all temperatures assessed. The peak temperature for voracity was 32 °C, with a potential maximum daily predation rate of 204 aphids. Consumption of aphids by H. conformis on canola plants within a glasshouse was less than predicted from the laboratory‐generated models. However, consumption increased significantly with increasing density of M. persicae. CONCLUSION: H. conformis can contribute markedly to aphid suppression and could be incorporated into integrated pest management systems which rely on natural enemies, particularly during spring when temperatures increase above 25 °C. Throughout the Phanerozoic, sessile metazoans grew in close association with various microbial carbonates to form reefs. The first metazoans with calcareous hard‐parts appeared in the terminal Ediacaran, ca 550 million years ago, and these also commonly grew associated with microbial mats, thrombolites and stromatolites, to form the oldest known metazoan–microbial reefs. These hard‐parts also formed the first skeletal (bioclastic) carbonate sediments, which increased to dominate shallow marine carbonate sedimentary production during the Phanerozoic. Here the growth dynamics and sedimentary interactions between Ediacaran microbial–metazoan reefs and their bioclastic products are described based on reef complexes from the Nama Group, Namibia (ca 547 Ma), and the first three‐dimensional numerical models are constructed to parametrize these dynamics. These reefs are observed to form large domal mounds and columns neighbouring locally high rates of bioclastic sediment accumulation, and commonly evolve to flat‐topped surfaces overlain by sediment. This model is parsimonious, embodying a single dynamic rule: metazoans attach to microbialite mounds which grow radially into free space shedding bioclasts in proportion to metazoan production. Models evolve mounds into columns due to spatial competition, and produce an oscillating interplay between mound expansion and smothering that results in an inter‐fingering of microbialite mound and detrital sediment. This dynamic is shown to be non‐linear in the proportion of bioclastic sediment produced. Smothering by bioclastic sediment is also demonstrated to both reduce the rate (by volume) of subsequent mound growth, and to overwhelm the growing mat surfaces of stromatolites: after a threshold is reached in the rate of bioclastic sediment deposition, sediment terminates all stromatolite growth. These models show that the general characteristics of field observations can be explained by a single dynamic rule, and that reef‐sourced bioclasts may make an important local contribution to Ediacaran to Cambrian microbial–metazoan reef dynamics – a contribution that remains important throughout the Phanerozoic. The properties of carbonate rocks are often the result of multiple, diagenetic events that involve phases of cementation (porosity occlusion) and dissolution (porosity enhancement). This study tests the hypothesis that the order of these events is a major control on final porosity and permeability. A three‐dimensional synthetic model of grainstone is used to quantify trends that show the effect of early cementation, non‐fabric selective dissolution, and then a second‐generation of (post‐dissolution) cement. Models are 3 mm3 with a resolution of 10 μm. Six simple paragenetic sequences are modelled from an identical starting sediment (without accounting for compaction) where the same diagenetic events are placed in different sequences, allowing for quantification of relative changes in the resultant porosity and permeability for each diagenetic event, the trajectory through time, as well as for each final rock. All modelled paragenetic sequences result in reductions in porosity and permeability, but the order of diagenetic events controls the trajectory and final rock properties. Differences in the order of early cement precipitation alone produce variable final values, but all follow the porosity–permeability relationship as expressed by the Kozeny‐Carman equation. However, final values for the sequences which include a phase of dissolution fall on a new curve, which departs from that predicted by the Kozeny‐Carman relationship. This allows an alternative form of porosity–permeability relationship to be proposed: κ = 2280ϕ–30,400, where ϕ is porosity (%) and κ is permeability (mD). Hence while the Kozeny‐Carman relationship predicts porosity–permeability changes that occur with cementation, it is unable to capture accurately changes within the pore network as a result of dissolution. Although the results may be dependent on the properties of the initial carbonate sediment and simplified diagenetic scenarios, it is suggested that this new porosity–permeability relationship may capture some generalized behaviour, which can be tested by modelling further sediment types and diagenetic scenarios. Kiacatoo Man, a large, rugged Aboriginal adult buried in the Lachlan riverine plains of southeastern Australia, was discovered in 2011. Laser‐ablation uranium series analysis on bone yielded a minimum age for the burial of 27.4 ± 0.4 ka (2σ). Single‐grain, optically stimulated luminescence ages on quartz sediment in which the grave had been dug gave a weighted mean age of 26.4 ± 1.5 ka (1σ). Luminescence samples from the grave infill and from sediment beneath the grave exhibit overdispersed dose distributions consistent with bioturbation or other disturbance, which has obscured the burial signal. The overlap between the minimum (U‐series) and maximum (luminescence) ages places the burial between 27.0 and 29.4 ka (2σ). Luminescence ages obtained from the channel belt of between 28 ± 2 and 25 ± 3 ka indicate that fluvial sedimentation was occurring before the Last Glacial Maximum, which is consistent with the broader geomorphic setting. Together, these results are internally and regionally consistent, and indicate that Kiacatoo Man was one of the more ancient individuals so far identified in Australia. His remains are important to our understanding of patterns of biological variation and other processes that have shaped people in the Murray‐Darling Basin through time. Site selection for the geological storage of CO2 for long timespans requires an understanding of the controls on containment, migration, and surface seepage of subsurface CO2 fluids. Evidence of natural CO2 migration from depth to the surface is documented at 270 sites from Italy, a prolific CO2 province. Previous studies indicate that CO2 delivery to and from buried structures that host CO2 accumulations is fault controlled but competing controls on the CO2 flow pathways affect the location and style of CO2 release. Here, we conduct a meta-analysis using a novel geospatial approach to statistically determine the relationship between the geological setting and structures and the CO2 seep spatial distribution and characteristics (morphological type, flux, and temperature) in Central Italy. We find that seep distribution differs on two spatial scales corresponding to the geological setting. On large scales (>5 km), seeps are isotropically distributed and align with regional structures such as anticlines, decollements, and extensional faults. On local scales (<5 km), seeps cluster and align with subsidiary geologic structures, including faults and lithological boundaries. The detailed location and flux of seeps within clusters are influenced by the regional structural domain: in the Tyrrhenian, seeps tend to be located along fault traces, whereas seeps are located as springs in the tip and ramp regions of fault scarps in the Apennines. Thus, our geospatial approach evidences, at a regional scale, how macrocrustal fluid flow is governed by deep extensional and compressional features but once CO2 reaches shallower structures, it evidences how smaller scale features and hydrogeological factors distribute the CO2 fluids in the near surface, dependent on the geological setting. This work not only demonstrates useful application of a novel geospatial approach to characterize competing crustal controls on CO2 flow at different scales but also informs the design of appropriate site characterization and surface monitoring programs at engineered carbon stores. Objective: This study aimed to compare intermittent fasting (IF) versus continuous energy intakes at 100% or 70% of calculated energy requirements on insulin sensitivity, cardiometabolic risk, body weight, and composition.Methods: Women with overweight (n = 88; 50 ± 1 years, BMI 32.3 ± 0.5 kg/m2 ) were randomized to one of four diets (IF70, IF100, dietary restriction [DR70], or control) in a 2:2:2:1 ratio for 8 weeks. IF groups fasted for 24 hours after breakfast on three nonconsecutive days per week. All foods were provided and diets matched for macronutrient composition (35% fat, 15% protein, 50% carbohydrate). Insulin sensitivity by hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, weight, body composition, and plasma markers were assessed following a "fed" day (12-hour fast) and a 24-hour fast (IF only).Results: IF70 displayed greater reductions in weight, fat mass, total- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and nonesterified fatty acids compared with DR70 and IF100 (all P ≤ 0.05). IF100 lost more weight and fat than control. However, fasting insulin was increased. There were no group differences in insulin sensitivity by clamp; however, a 24-hour fast transiently reduced insulin sensitivity.Conclusions: When prescribed at matched energy restriction, IF reduced weight and fat mass and improved total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol more than DR. ABSTRACT: Environmental fluctuations in redox may reinforce rather than hinder evolutionary transitions, such that variability in near‐surface oceanic oxygenation can promote morphological evolution and novelty. Modern, low‐oxygen regions are heterogeneous and dynamic habitats that support low diversity and are inhabited by opportunistic and non‐skeletal metazoans. We note that several major radiation episodes follow protracted or repeating intervals (>1 million years) of persistent and dynamic shallow marine redox (oceanic anoxic events). These are also often associated with short‐lived mass‐extinction events (<0.5 million years) where skeletal benthic incumbents are removed, and surviving or newly evolved benthos initially inhabit transient oxic habitats. We argue that such intervals create critical opportunities for the generation of evolutionary novelty, followed by innovation and diversification. We develop a general model for redox controls on the distribution and structure of the shallow marine benthos in a dominantly anoxic world, and compile data from the terminal Ediacaran–mid‐Cambrian (∼560–509 Ma), late Cambrian–Ordovician (∼500–445 Ma), and Permo‐Triassic (∼255–205 Ma) to test these predictions. Assembly of phylogenetic data shows that prolonged and widespread anoxic intervals indeed promoted morphological novelty in soft‐bodied benthos, providing the ancestral stock for subsequently skeletonized lineages to appear as innovations once oxic conditions became widespread and stable, in turn promoting major evolutionary diversification. Abstract: India's Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is the largest labour guarantee scheme in the world, offering 100 days of paid labour to every rural household. This article reviews the growing evidence base, assessing the extent to which the scheme can be said to contribute to resilience to climate change, based on its effectiveness as a safety net and driver of household accumulation, its ability to create assets which build collective resilience, and its support for transformations of exploitative social relations. The article concludes that the MGNREGA has already made a major contribution to resilience, but requires improvements in governance and state capacity to maximize its contribution. As a target, the JNK pathway has been implicated in roles including cell death, proliferation, and inflammation in variety of contexts which span cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative pathologies, and cancer. JNK1 and JNK2 have recently been demonstrated to function independently, highlighting a new parameter in the study of the JNK pathway. In order for JNK1 and JNK2-specific roles to be defined, better tools need to be employed. Previous studies have relied upon the broad spectrum JNK inhibitor, SP600125, to characterize the role of JNK signaling in a number of cell lines, including the breast cancer cell line MCF-7. In line with previous literature, our study has demonstrated that SP600125 treatment inhibited c-Jun and JNK phosphorylation and MCF-7 proliferation. However, in addition to targeting JNK1, JNK2, and JNK3, SP600125 has been previously demonstrated to suppress the activity of a number of other serine/threonine kinases, making SP600125 an inadequate tool for JNK isoform-specific roles to be determined. In this study, lentiviral shRNA was employed to selectively knockdown JNK1, JNK2, and JNK1/2 in MCF-7 cells. Using this approach, JNK phosphorylation was fully inhibited following stable knockdown of respective JNK isoforms. Interestingly, despite suppression of JNK phosphorylation, MCF-7 cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, or cell death remained unaffected. These findings raise the question of whether JNK phosphorylation really is pivotal in MCF-7 cell growth and death or if suppression of these events is a result of one of the many off-targets cited for SP600125. In a competitive climate in which charities must increasingly rely on fundraising with the public, emotions such as hope, guilt, and fear are powerful tools that can be used strategically to secure donations or participation. This paper explores data from interviews with 23 fundraisers and voluntary sector workers, managers, and officials, to argue that decisions around how, why, and when to invest in the elicitation of emotion in fundraising are often difficult and conflicted, with some identifying a battle between ethics and effectiveness. We identify 3 key levels of conflict that must be negotiated: at the level of the charity sector, where the emotional ethics particularly of larger charities have been met with some resistance from the public and press; at the level of the organisation itself, where the ethics of representation are often a subject of conflict between fundraising and other departments such as policy; and, finally, at the experiential level of individual fundraisers themselves, who report being routinely internally conflicted around the rights and wrongs of using emotion in their work. A strategic approach to eliciting emotion emerges in the data as a useful way to address some of these areas of conflict, with fundraisers making careful 'balancing' decisions about how and with whom to mobilise certain emotions at specific times. Background: The Apgar score has been shown to be predictive of neonatal mortality in clinical and population studies, but has not been used for international comparisons. We examined population-level distributions in Apgar scores and associations with neonatal mortality in Europe.Methods: Aggregate data on the 5 minute Apgar score for live births and neonatal mortality rates from countries participating in the Euro-Peristat project in 2004 and 2010 were analysed. Country level associations between the Apgar score and neonatal mortality were assessed using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient.Results: Twenty-three countries or regions provided data on Apgar at 5 minutes, covering 2 183 472 live births. Scores <7 ranged from 0.3% to 2.4% across countries in 2004 and 2010 and were correlated over time (ρ = 0.88, P < 0.01). There were large differences in healthy baby scores: scores of 10 ranged from 8.8% to 92.7% whereas scores of 9 or 10 ranged from 72.9% to 96.8%. Countries more likely to score 10 s, as opposed to 9 s, for healthy babies had lower proportions of Apgar <7 (ρ = -0.43, P = 0.04). Neonatal mortality rates were weakly correlated with Apgar score <7 (ρ = -0.06, P = 0.61), but differences over time in these two indicators were correlated (ρ =0.56, P = 0.02).Conclusions: Large variations in the distribution of Apgar scores likely due to national scoring practices make the Apgar score an unsuitable indicator for benchmarking newborn health across countries. Anthropologists studying the Andean community politics have increasingly emphasised the role of pragmatic, informal 'vernacular' political strategies in achieving material and political empowerment of the poor. However, while the concept of vernacular politics marks an advancement over binary and often polarised discussions of the role of local communities in development processes, studies have not fully explored the full range of implications of vernacular strategies on development processes. While researchers have demonstrated the substantial agency that local community actors have to influence development processes, the extent to which this influence effectively resists or reinforces the logic of public policy implementation has not been studied. This article explores the techniques used by rural communities in their interactions with public institutions in rural Bolivia. It shows that community organisations' vernacular political strategies have mixed outcomes: on the one hand, they allow the rural poor to assert their own agendas vis-à-vis the state so that they can benefit from public spending, while on the other hand, their tactics have the potential to entrench the influence of local power brokers and perpetuate inefficient uses of public funds. Bones from extinct Australian marsupials found at Spring Creek, Victoria, and in the Mowbray Swamp, Tasmania, have yielded scattered and anomalously young radiocarbon ages measured on collagen, gelatin or ultrafiltered gelatin. We resampled previously dated material from those two sites and from Mt Cripps, Tasmania, as well as a control sample from Zaglik, Russia, to compare chronologies based on XAD-2 purified total amino acid fractions and collagen purified by ultrafiltration ( UF) or less rigorous methods. Our age from the control site bone gave a similar infinite age, while six out of seven other comparisons yielded radiocarbon ages on total amino acid fractions older than those previously measured on collagen or gelatin. Resilience has become prominent in academia where it is used as a central framework in disciplines such as ecology, climate change adaptation or urban planning. Policy makers and international development agencies also increasingly refer to it. The objective of this paper is to assess the advantages and limits of resilience in the context of development. Although the review highlights some positive elements-for example, the ability to foster an integrated approach-it also shows that resilience has important limitations. In particular, it is not a pro-poor concept, in the sense that it does not exclusively apply to, or benefit, the poor. As such, resilience building cannot replace poverty reduction. Prevalence and risk factors for low VitD and BMD and response to VitD therapy were investigated in pediatric renal Tx recipients. 25-hydroxy VitD levels of 71 Tx were compared to 54 healthy AA children. DXA of 44 Tx were compared to 47 AA controls. Of Tx, 59% were AA. Majority (59.1%) of Tx were VitD deficient (23.9%) or insufficient (35.2%). Prevalence of low VitD levels was double in AA (73.9%) vs. non-AA Tx (37.7%), (p = 0.003). Low VitD among Tx was associated with AA ethnicity (p < 0.01), winter (p < 0.05), older age (p < 0.05), males (p < 0.05) and time <6 months post Tx (p < 0.05). Tx with low VitD were treated with oral ergocalciferol or cholecalciferol (23 each); 13% treated with ergocalciferol vs. 82.6% treated with cholecalciferol achieved repletion (p < 0.0001). Objective: To measure alterations in SPA1, A2, and D gene expression in various forms of inflammatory chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Study Design and Setting: Sinus mucosal biopsies were performed in patients with allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFS), CRS with nasal polyposis, cystic fibrosis (CF), and controls. SP mRNA was measured with quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results: Patients with CF (n = 4) showed significantly increased SPA1 (82-fold), SPA2 (100-fold), and SPD (47-fold) mRNA (P < 0.05) when compared with controls (n = 5). Patients with CRS with nasal polyposis (n = 5) also demonstrated elevated SPA1 (27-fold), SPA2 (13-fold), and SPD (13-fold). Patients with AFS (n = 7) had increased SPA1 (5-fold), SPA2 (9-fold), and SPD (17-fold), but were not statistically significant. Conclusion: SPA1, A2, and D are upregulated in various forms of CRS, but are significantly elevated in cystic fibrosis CRS. Reefs were decimated by the Frasnian/Famennian (Late Devonian) mass extinction event (371 Ma), and are assumed to have survived only as depauperate calcimicrobial communities dominated by disaster taxa. Description of Famennian proximal reef-slope communities within the Windjana Limestone, Canning Basin, north-western Australia, shows that, notwithstanding the loss of large metazoans, novel ecologies were established in this setting by a rich biota of survivor and progenitor taxa. Diverse calcimicrobes together with algae, crinoids, bryozoans, brachiopods, and abundant sponges (stromatoporoids, inozoans, sphinctozoans, lithistids and hexactinellids) formed a reef framework of either elevated platy structures up to 4 m in diameter and 0.35 m thick, or mounds up to 15 m in diameter. This framework was dominated by a complex intergrowth of calcimicrobes, where Rothpletzella formed the primary framework, Ortonella, and Girvanella were secondary encrusters, and Shuguria spp. occupied small crypts 2–30 mm in diameter. Contiguous columnar stromatolites up to 50 mm in height and 1 m in width grew upwards from substrate sheltered beneath large sheltered primary cavities: based on minimum growth rates of 50–100 μm/year these are estimated to have been between 500 and 1000 years old. The elevated platy community is inferred to have grown in conditions of episodic siliciclastic sediment input; the reef mounds grew during either episodes, or in localised areas, of low sedimentation. At least 14 morphospecies of spicular sponges are now identified from the Windjana Limestone, where only two were previously documented. These fore-slope reef communities exposed in Windjana Gorge flourished in high-energy carbonate environments dominated by coated grain sediments, and where rapid, early lithification was pervasive. Such observations demonstrate that no protracted interval of time was necessarily required for post-extinction ‘recovery’ in regions where some reef-building taxa survived and suitable carbonate habitats persisted or returned. Moreover, they show that new ecologies, rather than remnants of the pre-extinction community, could be established rapidly. The reef-slope communities of the Windjana Limestone offer little evidence to support the ideas of resurgence or invasion of taxa from deeper waters after the Frasnian/Famennian extinction. Indeed, there is evidence to suggest that similar microbial-sponge communities were already established in margin and reef slope communities in the latest Frasnian. Back-reef ecologies within the celebrated mixed carbonate-siliciclastic Late Devonian (late Frasnian) Pillara Limestone of Windjana Gorge, in the Canning Basin, Western Australia, are re-interpreted as being dominated by microbial communities. Proposed microbialites are expressed as weakly-laminated, fenestral micrite, that show unsupported primary voids, peloidal textures, disseminated bioclastic debris, and traces of microfilaments. These grew as either extensive free-standing mounds or columns, often intergrown with encrusting metazoans, or thick post-mortem encrustations upon skeletal benthos. In some cases, microbial encrustations are inferred to have developed in protected cavities formed by progressive burial of the reef. The calcimicrobeShuguriaalso shows a preferentially cryptic habit, encrusting either primary cavities formed by skeletal benthos, microbialite, or the ceilings of mm-sized fenestrae within microbialite. A further calcimicrobe,Rothpletzella, formed columns up to 0.3 m high in areas enriched by very coarse siliciclastic sediment. Stromatoporoid sponges with a diverse range of morphologies also formedin situgrowth fabrics. Monospecific thickets of closely-aggregating dendroid stromatoporoid sponges (Stachyodes costulata), and platy-laminar forms (?Hermatostromaspp.) were common, as were remarkably large stromatoporoids (Actinostromaspp.) that grew as isolated individuals up to 5 m in diameter. This paper explores the relationship between wetland ecosystems and prehistoric lakeshore settlements within the Lake Ohrid basin (a biodiversity hotspot) by considering plant food systems at Ploča Mičov Grad, North Macedonia. The mid‐fifth millennium (c.4555–4373 to 4437–4241 cal BCE) waterlogged assemblage contained a diverse spectrum of crops and ‘wild’ resources, providing resilience against crop failure. Comparisons to earlier (c.5787–5722 to 5753–5715 cal BCE) and later (c.1878–1688 cal BCE) phases show recurrent patterns of plant use alongside shifts in preferred crops. Reefal buildups in western Mongolia of mid-Early Cambrian (late Atdabanian) age flourished during a period when shelf seas were globally widespread. The succession at Zuune Arts records the transition from shallow marine siliciclastic sediments (Bayan Gol Formation) to shallow marine, but still clastic-influenced, carbonates (Salaany Gol Formation). The Salaany Gol Formation is interpreted as having been deposited as a series of shallowing upwards cycles on a shallow, gently inclined shelf in a rapidly subsiding epicontinental sea. Cycles commenced with the growth of subtidal metazoan-calcimicrobe aggregative communities on an open shelf. The resultant buildups were commonly engulfed by extensive, massive microbial stromatolites when they grew in agitated intertidal conditions. Latterly, they were smothered by ooids shoals in response to rapid sea level rise. Four types of reefal buildup are distinguished: (1) green-coloured calcimicrobe (Tarthinia, Epiphyton, Gordonophyton and Renalcis) boundstones; (2) red-or green-coloured Cambrocyathellus-Tarthinia-Epiphyton bafflestones; (3) red-coloured Okulithchicyathus bindstones; and (4) red-coloured radiocyath-archaeocyath-cribricyath bioherms. Each is interpreted as having grown at increasing depths and possibly sedimentation rates. The buildups are commonly enclosed within graded and planar bedded bioclastic grainstones and packstones, and are best developed towards the top of the formation, when sea level was high. Thickets of large, solitary archaeocyaths are also inferred in the deeper interbiohermal areas. Introduction: Surfactant protein (SP)-B is a hydrophobic protein secreted within pulmonary surfactant that facilitates the adsorption of surface-active lipids to the air-liquid interface of the alveoli and increases alveolar stability. SP-B may also have anti-inflammatory properties. It is implicated in decreasing the pulmonary inflammatory response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide. However, the expression and function of SP-B in the sinonasal cavities has not been elucidated. Our objective was to detect the presence of SP-B, measure alterations in several forms of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), and localize cellular protein expression., Materials/methods: Sinus mucosal biopsies were performed in patients with allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS), nonatopic CRS with nasal polyposis (NP), and cystic fibrosis (CF) and in healthy controls. SP-B mRNA was measured in CRS and control patients using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Immunoblot analysis and immunolocalization of SP-B were also performed., Results: CF (n = 4) showed significantly increased levels of SP-B (169-fold) mRNA (P = .004) when compared with controls (n = 5). CRS with NP (n = 5) and AFRS (n = 7) also demonstrated elevated levels of SP- B (14-fold and 4-fold, respectively) when compared with the control group, although these were not statistically significant. Immunoblot analysis confirmed the presence of the translated product, and immunolocalization revealed expression in the epithelium and submucosal glandular elements., Conclusion: This is the first study to detect and characterize SP-B in human sinus mucosa. Furthermore, SP-B is significantly up-regulated in CF CRS.
