Aim This study aimed to gain undergraduate nursing students' perceptions of the essential qualities of the professional nurse. Background An essential component of undergraduate nursing programmes is to educate the student to become qualified as a professional/registered nurse. These characteristics will determine curricula and students' perceptions. No qualitative studies of the essential qualities of nurses are evident in recent literature. Methods A descriptive survey method was used to gather participants' perceptions of the qualities of a registered nurse over each year of their bachelor of nursing course at the largest programme in Australia. Findings Six concepts occurred most frequently in the students' responses. Caring was the most common followed by knowledge/understanding, empathy, work, communication and skills. Discussion A montage was developed with an interlacing of the qualities rather than any one concept predominating any year. Each quality was seen as essential and used to varying degrees as the nurse becomes a professional. These qualities form part of the education of nurses and have implications for nursing and/or health policy. This study has implications in the development of nursing curricula, which should include both the science and art of nursing with an emphasis on technical and communication skills. Conclusion This study has shown that students in Australia hold similar perceptions to their contemporaries in other international western countries. Implications for Nursing and Health Policy Caring is emphasized as a critical component of nursing delivery; however, opportunities must be presented to students to integrate skills such as caring, knowledge/understanding, empathy and communication. Background This paper reports on the experiences of the children (nieces and nephews), volunteers (aunts and uncles) and parents involved in the Aunties and Uncles Co-operative Family Project in Sydney, Australia. The project has run for 30 years as an extended family network of community volunteers and has never been evaluated. Methods A survey comprising open-ended and closed questions relating to the service was administered to all stakeholders. Demographic data were collected on all respondents. The text from answers to open-ended questions on the survey was coded for similarities and differences and was categorized. From the categories, the experiences of children, volunteers and parents were written with exemplars from the respondents' text. Results Three major categories emerged from the text: enjoyment/satisfaction of the experience for volunteers, children and parents; family relationships; and the difference it has made to me (children, parents and volunteers). Conclusions The long-term benefits of a supportive ‘extended family type’ relationship were recognized by all participants. Although the children were the primary focus of the project, parents and volunteers also described the rewards they experienced. The volunteer element was integral to providing the wide-ranging, ongoing supports which would not be possible from a paid staff basis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIMS: This paper draws on the literature to explore some of the issues of concern to nurses undertaking fieldwork in contemporary healthcare settings. BACKGROUND: The emergence of poststructuralist and postmodern perspectives has raised questions about ethnographic approaches, and problematized the role of researchers in the construction of plausible and credible ethnographic accounts. As a practice discipline, nursing needs to negotiate a thorny path between methodological purity and practical application, with nurse researchers required to take account of both philosophical and pragmatic concerns. DISCUSSION: There is general agreement that researching with an individual or group rather than researching on an individual or group is the more effective way to approach fieldwork. Feminist writers appear to have dealt with this issue best, advocating intimacy, self-disclosure, and reciprocity in encounters with research participants. The duality of the nurse researcher role; power and politics and the moral implications of fieldwork are acknowledged as factors influencing nurses in the planning and conduct of fieldwork. Nurses as researchers may be better equipped than other social researchers to deal with contingencies in the field. CONCLUSIONS: Laying the epistemological ground for the participant observer role during fieldwork and understanding its impact on the resultant ethnographic account is essential to methodological rigour in field research. Consideration of some of the practicalities and predicaments experienced by nurses as researchers when conducting fieldwork prior to going out into the field is an important research strategy and will facilitate methodological potency. AIMS: To analyse the research published in refereed nursing journals by Australian authors from 1995 to 2000. BACKGROUND: Analysis of the research topics and types of methodologies used by Australian nurse researchers has not been recently undertaken. The study was similar to an analysis of United Kingdom (UK) nursing research between 1988 and 1995 to allow comparison between the two countries. DESIGN: A quantitative approach analysed the research abstracts for the topic researched, source of data, location of data collection, paradigm and methodology used and funding source. RESULTS: A total of 509 articles from 11 generalist Australian and UK nursing journals were analysed. The highest numbers of articles were published in Australian Journal of Advanced Nursing and Journal of Advanced Nursing. The most popular topics were education of nurses (18.7%, n=95) and practice issues relating to patient care (15.3%, n=78). However, scant attention was paid to major Australian health issues. Most research was undertaken in the hospital setting (55.8%, n=247). Data were most often drawn from nurses themselves (40.7%, n=206), followed by patients (25.5%, n=129). Both quantitative (41%, n=203) and qualitative approaches (47%, n=230) were employed. A minority of studies acknowledged any funding (14.9%, n=76). CONCLUSIONS: Research findings need to be applied in practice to improve patient care. Nurse researchers need to publish their findings and align their research interests to meet national health priorities. A research project was undertaken to describe how the support needs of women who have had treatment for breast cancer were being met in New South Wales, Australia. Data were collected from both the women and the nurses who cared for them. The findings from the first part of the study examined the nurses' perceptions of the women's needs and how they as health professionals, fulfilled these needs. Analysis was both qualitative and quantitative. Seventy-eight nurses responded to a questionnaire and 15 were interviewed. The findings indicated that the nurses perceived information on disease process and physical aspects of the disease as essential to supporting the women with breast cancer. While they saw providing emotional support to the women as important the nurses themselves often lacked the time and skills to provide it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports on a study which investigated whether nurses from Eastern and Western cultures hold differing definitions of euthanasia and different perspectives of the effect their attitudes to euthanasia on professional relationships with patients and colleagues. The focus of the study was the lived experience of Chinese and Australian nurses working in palliative care. The results indicate that there were differences between these two groups in their definitions of euthanasia. Lived experience obtained from both groups revealed conflict with patients and colleagues, and a lack of opportunity to discuss the ethical issue of euthanasia in the workplace. The distribution and enumeration of mast cell subpopulations within the respiratory tract of a high- and low-IgE responder rat strain was determined during postnatal development. Mast cells were identified in adjacent sections by the alcian blue (AB)/safranin (SAF) staining sequence, or using immunoperoxidase to detect the rat mast cell proteinases I (RMCPI) or II (RMCPII). At birth both mucosal mast cells (MMC) and connective tissue mast cells (CTMC) were represented in very low numbers at distinct locations throughout the respiratory tract. The total number of mast cells increased with age. MMC (AB+/RMCPII+ mast cells) were the predominant phenotype in the epithelium and lamina propria of the trachea and the major conducting airways of the lung in all age groups. In contrast, CTMC (AB+/RPMCPI+ and SAF+/RMCPI+ mast cells) predominated in the submucosa of the trachea and major conducting airways as well as in the parenchyma and visceral pleura of the peripheral lung. Both phenotypes co-exist in similar proportions in peribronchial adventitial tissue and adventitia surrounding large blood vessels in neonates as well as adults. In rats the tracheal epithelium is densely populated by MMC from around the time of weaning (3 weeks) and a small but generalized increase in the number of M MC at all sites within the respiratory tract is noted from this time. This increase in MMC frequency in tissue sections with increasing age is mirrored by the levels of circulating serum RMCPII. The number of bone marrow-derived MMC also increased with increasing age prior to weaning, with a significant drop (P < 0.01) at 4 weeks of age before returning to the peak numbers in 3-week-old rats. The high-IgE responder Brown Norwegian (BN) rat strain constitutively produces significantly more IgE than the low-IgE responder White albino Glaxo (WAG) strain (P < 0.001) at all ages studied, in contrast, only minor differences between the number and distribution of mast cells in the two strains were observed. Repeated exposure of immunocompetent adult rats to aerosolised allergen stimulates persistent IgG responses to the allergen, the magnitude of which varies as a function of genetic background. In contrast, exposed adult animals develop immunological tolerance in the IgE isotype, and are unable to produce allergen-specific IgE antibody in response to subsequent parenteral immunization. Infant rats appear anergic to challenge with inhaled allergen either in relation to IgG synthesis or expression of tolerance in the IgE antibody class, and both these functions were subsequently acquired during the first week after weaning. Systemic immune responses were essentially normal in the infant animals, suggesting that the failure to 'recognise' inhaled antigen in the early postnatal period was due to a selective maturational defect in local respiratory mucosal immune function. Objectives: To examine the prevalence and predictors of depression and anxiety in palliative care patients with cancer in Western Australia and New South Wales.Design, Setting and Participants: A descriptive study of 266 consecutive patients at a range of inpatient and outpatient settings including home care, hospices, and private and tertiary care hospitals in WA and NSW from 1 March to 30 June 2002.Main Outcome Measures: Self-reported anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) at a cut-off score of > or = 8 on each subscale (depression and anxiety) for possible cases, and of > or = 11 for probable cases; a cut-off score of > or = 19 was used for probable combined depression and anxiety.Results: Patients included 200 in WA and 66 in NSW. For the whole sample, 45.8% of patients were possibly depressed and 22.7% probably depressed; 36.9% were possibly anxious and 19.8% probably anxious. About 25% of patients had probable combined depression and anxiety. Logistic regression analyses indicated that past anxiety in the family predicted probable depression, while age, marital status and past depression predicted probable anxiety. Age and past depression predicted probable combined depression and anxiety.Conclusions: These findings underscore the need for routine screening for anxiety and depression in palliative care settings, including questions about past personal and family history of anxiety and depression, and the need for a range of interventions and support services.
