Mono‐ and bis‐salen functionalised [2]rotaxanes have been synthesised from the esterification of [2]rotaxanes containing phenol‐terminated threads (salen=N,N′‐bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine). The [2]rotaxanes have general formula [RH][Cr7NiF8(O2CtBu)16], where [RH]+ is a thread with a central secondary ammonium site that templates a [Cr7NiF8(O2CtBu)16]− ring. The threads are terminated at one or both ends by carboxylic acid functionalised salen groups. The {M(salen)} groups can be free‐base [M=(H+)2] or metallated [M=Cu2+, Ni2+, (VO)2+]. The [2]rotaxanes have been characterised by single crystal XRD and solid‐ and solution‐state EPR spectroscopy. Where two paramagnetic M ions are involved [M=Cu2+ and/or (VO)2+] the [2]rotaxanes contain three electron spin S=1/2 ${{ 1/2 }}$ centres, since the {Cr7Ni} ring has an S=1/2 ${{ 1/2 }}$ ground state which is well isolated at low temperatures. These three‐spin [2]rotaxanes have been characterised in solution by pulsed dipolar EPR spectroscopies (DEER, also known as PELDOR, and RIDME). The M⋅⋅⋅M and M⋅⋅⋅{Cr7Ni} interactions measured are consistent with dipolar interactions and also with the distances from single crystal XRD. The authors declare no competing financial interest. In the design of dynamic supramolecular systems used in molecular machines, it is important to understand the binding preferences between the macrocycle and stations along the thread. Here, we apply 1H NMR spectroscopy to investigate the relative stabilities of a series of linear alkylammonium templated pseudorotaxanes with the general formula [H2NRR'][Cr7CoF8(O2CCH2tBu)16] by exchanging the cation in solution. Our results show that the pseudorotaxanes are able to exchange threads via a dissociative mechanism. The position of equilibrium is dependent upon the ammonium cation and solvent used. Short chain primary ammonium cations are shown to be far less favourable macrocycle stations than secondary ammonium cations. Collision‐induced dissociation mass spectrometry (CID‐MS) has been used to look at disassembly of the pseudorotaxanes in a solvent‐free environment and stability trends compared to those in acetone‐d6. The energy needed to induce 50 % of the precursor ion loss (E50) is used and shows a similar trend to the equilibria measured by NMR. The relative stabilities of these hybrid inorganic‐organic pseudo‐rotaxanes are different to those of host‐guest compounds involving crown ethers and this may be valuable for the design of molecular machines. We report the synthesis of a series of temperature‐sensitive non‐classical early Ln(II) (Ln=lanthanide) complexes, [K(2.2.2‐cryptand)][Ln(Cptt)3] (Cptt=C5H3tBu2‐1,3; 1‐Ln; Ln=La−Nd). Complexes 1‐Ln were typically prepared using Schlenk line techniques rather than more common glove box protocols, by the reduction of the parent Ln(III) complexes [Ln(Cptt)3] (2‐Ln) with KC8 in THF in the presence of 2.2.2‐cryptand at −30 °C. The majority of the 2‐Ln series have been reported previously by the salt metathesis reactions of 3 eq. KCptt with parent LnCl3, and these methods were adapted here to afford 2‐Pr. Complexes 1‐Ln and 2‐Pr were characterized by single crystal XRD, elemental analysis, ATR‐IR and UV‐Vis‐NIR spectroscopy; 1‐La and 2‐Pr were additionally characterized by c.w. EPR spectroscopy, and variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed on 2‐Pr. During attempts to synthesize 2‐Nd and 2‐Sm we also obtained small crops of crystals of [Nd(Cptt)2(μ‐I)]2 (3) and [Sm(Cptt)2(μ‐Cl)]2 ⋅ C7H8 (4 ⋅ C7H8), respectively; these complexes were also structurally authenticated, and magnetic data was collected for 4 ⋅ C7H8. The combination of data obtained indicate that the Ln(II) centers in 1‐Ln adopt 4fn5d1 electron configurations, in common with other literature examples of [Ln(CpR)3]− anions (CpR=substituted cyclopentadienyl) for these metals. A synthetic strategy is demonstrated to prepare two distinct trimers of antiferromagnetically coupled {Cr7Ni} rings, substantially varying the magnetic interactions between the spin centres. The interactions were studied using multi‐frequency cw EPR: in a trimer linked via non‐covalent H‐bonding interactions no measurable interaction between rings was seen, while in a trimer linked via iso‐nicotinate groups isotropic and anisotropic exchange interactions of +0.42 and −0.8 GHz, respectively, were observed. The latter are the same as those for a simpler hetero‐dimer system, showing how the spin‐spin interactions can be built in a predictable and modular manner in these systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Relaying conformational change over several nanometers is central to the function of allosterically regulated proteins. Replicating this mechanism artificially would provide important communication tools, but requires nanometer‐sized molecules that reversibly switch between defined shapes in response to signaling molecules. In this work, 1.8 nm long rigid rod oligo(phenylene‐ethynylene)s are scaffolds for switchable multi‐squaramide hydrogen‐bond relays. Each relay can adopt either a parallel or an antiparallel orientation relative to the scaffold; the preferred orientation is dictated by a director group at one end. An amine director responded to proton signals, with acid‐base cycles producing multiple reversible changes in relay orientation that were reported by a terminal NH, which is 1.8 nm distant. Moreover, a chemical fuel acted as a dissipative signal. As the fuel was consumed, the relay reverted to its original orientation, illustrating how information from out‐of‐equilibrium molecular signals can be communicated to a distant site. High‐entropy (HE) metal chalcogenides are a class of materials that have great potential in applications such as thermoelectrics and electrocatalysis. Layered 2D transition‐metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are a sub‐class of high entropy metal chalcogenides that have received little attention to date as their preparation currently involves complicated, energy‐intensive, or hazardous synthetic steps. To address this, a low‐temperature (500 °C) and rapid (1 h) single source precursor approach is successfully adopted to synthesize the hexernary high‐entropy metal disulfide (MoWReMnCr)S2. (MoWReMnCr)S2 powders are characterized by powder X‐ray diffraction (pXRD) and Raman spectroscopy, which confirmed that the material is comprised predominantly of a hexagonal phase. The surface oxidation states and elemental compositions are studied by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) whilst the bulk morphology and elemental stoichiometry with spatial distribution is determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with elemental mapping information acquired from energy‐dispersive X‐ray (EDX) spectroscopy. The bulk, layered material is subsequently exfoliated to ultra‐thin, several‐layer 2D nanosheets by liquid‐phase exfoliation (LPE). The resulting few‐layer HE (MoWReMnCr)S2 nanosheets are found to contain a homogeneous elemental distribution of metals at the nanoscale by high angle annular dark field‐scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF‐STEM) with EDX mapping. Finally, (MoWReMnCr)S2 is demonstrated as a hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst and compared to 2H‐MoS2 synthesized using the molecular precursor approach. (MoWReMnCr)S2 with 20% w/w of high‐conductivity carbon black displays a low overpotential of 229 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which is much lower than the overpotential of 362 mV for MoS2. From density functional theory calculations, it is hypothesised that the enhanced catalytic activity is due to activation of the basal plane upon incorporation of other elements into the 2H‐MoS2 structure, in particular, the first row TMs Cr and Mn. Controlling aspects of the μ2‐X− bridging anion in the metal–organic framework Ga‐MIL‐53 [GaX(bdc)] (X−=(OH)− or F−, bdc=1, 4‐benzenedicarboxylate) is shown to direct the temperature at which thermally induced breathing transitions of this framework occur. In situ single crystal X‐ray diffraction studies reveal that substituting 20 % of (OH)− in [Ga(OH)(bdc)] (1) for F− to produce [Ga(OH)0.8F0.2(bdc)] (2) stabilises the large pore (lp) form relative to the narrow pore (np) form, causing a well‐defined decrease in the onset of the lp to np transition at higher temperatures, and the adsorption/desorption of nitrogen at lower temperatures through np to lp to intermediate (int) pore transitions. These in situ diffraction studies have also yielded a more plausible crystal structure of the int‐[GaX(bdc)] ⋅ H2O phases and shown that increasing the heating rate to a flash heating regime can enable the int‐[GaX(bdc)] ⋅ H2O to lp‐[GaX(bdc)] transition to occur at a lower temperature than np‐[GaX(bdc)] via an unreported pathway. A new class of electron bean negative tone resist materials has been developed based on heterometallic rings. The initial resist performance demonstrates a resolution of 15 nm half‐pitch but at the expense of a low sensitivity. To improve sensitivity a 3D Monte Carlo simulation is used that utilizes a secondary and Auger electron generation model. The simulation suggests that the sensitivity can be dramatically improved while maintaining high resolution by incorporating appropriate chemical functionality around the metal–organic core. Despite being known for decades the chemical reactivity of homoatomic seven‐atom phosphorus clusters towards small molecules remains largely unexplored. Here, we report that neutral tris(silyl) functionalised heptaphosphane (P7(SiR3)3) cages are capable of heteroallene capture between the P−Si bonds of the cluster. A range of isocyanates and an isothiocyanate were investigated. In the case of isocyanates, silyl bonding at oxygen or nitrogen is regioselectively directed by the functional group on the isocyanate and substituents on the silyl moiety. Above all, we find that captured isothiocyanate molecules can be exchanged for isocyanate molecules, indicative of small molecule catch and release. Small molecule catch and release at these Zintl‐derived clusters reveals their potential application as chemical storage materials or as reusable probes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two α‐aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) foldamers bearing Zn(II)‐chelating N‐termini have been synthesized and compared with a reported Aib foldamer that has a bis(quinolinyl)/mono(pyridyl) cap (BQPA group). Replacement of the quinolinyl arms of the BQPA‐capped foldamer with pyridyl gave a BPPA‐capped foldamer, then further replacement of the linking pyridyl with a 1,2,3‐triazole gave a BPTA‐capped foldamer. Their ability to relay chiral information from carboxylate bound to Zn(II) at the N‐terminus to a glycinamide‐based NMR reporter of conformational preference at the C‐terminus was measured. The importance of the quinolinyl arms became readily apparent, as the foldamers with pyridyl arms were unable to report on the presence of chiral carboxylate in acetonitrile. Low solubility, X‐ray crystallography and 1H NMR spectroscopy suggested that interfoldamer interactions inhibited carboxylate binding. However changing solvent to methanol revealed that the end‐to‐end relay of chiral information could be observed for the Zn(II) complex of the BPTA‐capped foldamer at low temperature. NMR studies show that [2]rotaxanes can act as molecular shuttles, while EPR studies of [3]rotaxanes show weak interactions between the paramagnetic components of the supramolecular assemblies. Abstract: Helical α‐aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) foldamers show great potential as devices for the communication of conformational information across phospholipid bilayers, but determining their conformation in bilayers remains a challenge. In the present study, Raman, Raman optical activity (ROA), infrared (IR) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopies have been used to analyze the conformational preferences of Aib foldamers in solution and when interacting with bilayers. A 310‐helix marker band at 1665–1668 cm−1 in Raman spectra was used to show that net helical content increased strongly with oligomer length. ROA and VCD spectra of chiral Aib foldamers provided the chiroptical signature for both left‐ and right‐handed 310‐helices in organic solvents, with VCD establishing that foldamer screw‐sense was preserved when the foldamers became embedded within bilayers. However, the population distribution between different secondary structures was perturbed by the chiral phospholipid. These studies indicate that ROA and VCD spectroscopies are valuable tools for the study of biomimetic structures, such as artificial signal transduction molecules, in phospholipid bilayers. Abstract: Peptaibols are peptide antibiotics that typically feature an N‐terminal acetyl cap, a C‐terminal aminoalcohol, and a high proportion of α‐aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) residues. To establish how each feature might affect the membrane‐activity of peptaibols, biomimetic Aib foldamers with different lengths and terminal groups were synthesised. Vesicle assays showed that long foldamers (eleven Aib residues) with hydrophobic termini had the highest ionophoric activity. C‐terminal acids or primary amides inhibited activity, while replacement of an N‐terminal acetyl with an azide group made little difference. Crystallography showed that N3Aib11CH2OTIPS folded into a 310 helix 2.91 nm long, which is close to the bilayer hydrophobic width. Planar bilayer conductance assays showed discrete ion channels only for N‐acetylated foldamers. However long foldamers with hydrophobic termini had the highest antibacterial activity, indicating that ionophoric activity in vesicles was a better indicator of antibacterial activity than the observation of discrete ion channels. A family of heterometallic [Cat][TixMO(x+1)(O2CtBu)2x+2] rings is reported where Cat=a secondary or tertiary alkyl ammonium ion, x=7, 8 or 9, and M=FeIII, GaIII, CrIII, InIII and AlIII. The structures are regular polygons with eight, nine or ten vertices with each edge bridged by an oxide and two pivalates. The size of the ring formed is controlled by the alkylammonium cation present. In each case a homometallic by-product is found [Cat][TixO(x+1)(O2CtBu)2x−1]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new resist material for electron beam lithography has been created that is based on a supramolecular assembly. Initial studies revealed that with this supramolecular approach, high-resolution structures can be written that show unprecedented selectivity when exposed to etching conditions involving plasmas. We report an unprecedented selective cleavage of aromatic C−C bonds through the insertion of well-defined iridium complexes into the aromatic ring of simple alkylarenes. The insertion occurs at 50-100 °C without the activation of weaker C−H and C−C bonds and gives unique metallacycles in high yields. Key to the success of this approach is metal-induced deformation of the arene ring, which creates temporary ring strain and promotes direct and selective insertion of the metal into the otherwise inert arene ring C−C bonds. A series of new IrIII complexes with carbene ligands that contain a range of benzyl wingtip groups have been prepared and fully characterised by NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction. All the complexes were active in the acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohol substrates in 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol to give the corresponding carbonyl compounds. The most active complex bore an electron-rich carbene ligand; this complex was used to catalyse the highly efficient and chemoselective dehydrogenation of a wide range of secondary alcohols to their respective ketones, with turnover numbers up to 1660. Mechanistic studies suggested that the turnover of the dehydrogenation reaction is limited by the H2-formation step. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An enormous family of heterometallic rings has been made. The first were Cr7M rings where M=NiII, ZnII, MnII, and rings have been made with as many as fourteen metal centers in the cyclic structure. They are bridged externally by carboxylates, and internally by fluorides or a penta‐deprotonated polyol. The size of the rings is controlled through templates which have included a range of ammonium or imidazolium ions, alkali metals and coordination compounds. The rings can be functionalized to act as ligands, and incorporated into hybrid organic–inorganic rotaxanes and into molecules containing up to 200 metal centers. Physical studies reported include: magnetic measurements, inelastic neutron scattering (including single crystal measurements), electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (including measurements of phase memory times), NMR spectroscopy (both solution and solid state), and polarized neutron diffraction. The rings are hence ideal for understanding magnetism in elegant exchange‐coupled systems.A playground for physics: Heterometallic rings featuring seven trivalent and a single divalent metal center were first reported in 2003. Since that time they have been shown to be ideal for studying the physics of anti‐ferromagnetically coupled nanomagnets. The article presents a study which examines the multicomponent assemblies of cages. It states that the interactions between the components within the assemblies were analyzed through the use of magnetometry. Results show that the large nanoscale objects can be made from simple ideas in coordination chemistry and also the larger polyoxometallate cages have been reported.
