Although the Alternative Uses divergent thinking task has been widely used in psychometric and experimental studies of creativity, the cognitive processes underlying this task have not been examined in detail before the two studies are reported here. In Experiment 1, a verbal protocol analysis study of the Alternative Uses task was carried out with a Think aloud group (N = 40) and a Silent control group (N = 64). The groups did not differ in fluency or novelty of idea production indicating no verbal overshadowing. Analysis of protocols from the Think aloud group suggested that initial responses were based on a strategy of Retrieval from long-term memory of pre-known uses. Later responses tended to be based on a small number of other strategies: property-use generation, imagined Disassembly of the target object into components and scanning of Broad Use categories for possible uses of the target item. Novelty of uses was particularly associated with the Disassembly strategy. Experiment 2 (N = 103) addressed the role of executive processes in generating new and previously known uses by examining individual differences in category fluency, letter fluency and divergent task performance. After completing the task, participants were asked to indicate which of their responses were new for them. It was predicted and found in regression analyses that letter fluency (an executively loading task) was related to production of 'new' uses and category fluency was related to production of 'old' uses but not vice versa. Three experiments investigated a hypothesis, suggested by studies of the difficulties of discriminating between shapes forming symmetrical pairs, that spatial orientations of thin flat plates (lamellae) may be encoded in a plane, the encodement consisting of two enantiomorphs. The results indicated that participants encoded the spatial orientation of lamellar stimuli in terms of the difference in cogency between their two enantiomorphic elements (Expt 1). The difference in the cogency of the two enantiomorphs is related to the orientation of the plane containing the lamellar stimulus with respect to the participant's fronto-parallel plane (Expt 2). The two possible orientations of a lamella which yield the same difference of cogency, but which differ in spatial orientation (e.g. lamella 'b' set at 30 degrees or set at 150 degrees) are distinguished by the manner in which the two enantiomorphic elements are arranged with respect to their axis of symmetry (Expt 3). The results suggest that the orientation of a lamella may be encoded as a two-dimensional representation and hence that three dimensions may be encoded by two by means of enantiomorphs. Implications of this finding for the encodements of three-dimensional solids, wherein pronounced contours may fulfil the same role as do the edges of lamella, are discussed briefly. Long-term memory can be defined as a store of information gained from past experiences. However, the information stored may not be accurate, or the processes of retrieval may lead to errors in recall. One theory put forward to explain inaccuracies that occur during recall is schema-based reconstruction of information during encoding. To investigate the part played by reconstruction in recall the present study uses the ‘method of repeated reproduction’ described by Bartlett in 1932, substituting a real-life incidental event for the supernatural folk tale used as the stimulus material by Bartlett. Bartlett found accuracy in the initial recall of the tale to be rare, with further loss of accuracy observed with repeated recall. In the study reported here, the use of ‘real-life’ stimulus event produced accuracy of recall that was maintained, regardless of the number of repeated recalls or time between recall sessions. The few changes observed were in the form of descriptions containing pre-event schemata of similar locations and, with repeated recall, post-event schemata developed through subsequent experience. The initial accuracy sustained throughout the time period, together with the relative lack of change over time, suggests very limited use of reconstructive processes. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Azole antifungal agents such as ketoconazole act by inhibiting cytochrome P-450 mediated sterol synthesis in the fungal cell membrane and thus have the potential to interfere with mammalian steroidogenesis. Fluconazole is a novel orally-effective antifungal triazole which has been reported to have more specific effects on the cytochrome P-450 enzymes involved in fungal sterol synthesis. 2. Due to the potential value of systemic antifungal agents in the treatment of infections commonly occurring in women, we assessed the effect of oral fluconazole on the metabolic profile of 18 healthy premenopausal women, 10 of whom were taking combined oral contraceptives (OC). Each woman acted as her own control, being studied both before and 21-28 days after fluconazole therapy (50 mg daily), in the luteal phase of consecutive menstrual cycles. 3. The endocrinological profile included measurement of serum oestradiol, progesterone, testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) concentrations, short tetracosactrin adrenal stimulation test and thyroid function tests. Carbohydrate metabolism was investigated by means of an oral glucose tolerance test with measurement of plasma glucose, insulin and C-peptide concentrations. Serum lipids, lipoproteins and apolipoproteins were analysed on samples taken after an overnight fast. 4. Minor biochemical changes associated with fluconazole treatment included increases in serum thyroxine and testosterone concentrations (but not in women taking OC as well as fluconazole) and in insulin and apolipoprotein B levels (but only in women taking OC as well as fluconazole). In general, these changes were small and of no clinical significance with the values remaining within the laboratory normal range. The absolute pitch ability (AP) of three female and two male subjects has been investigated over many years. The pitch estimates of A4 (440 Hz) of four of the subjects varied by up to a semitone during the longitudinal study. The fifth subject showed no noticeable variation in his estimates of A4. Standard deviations calculated from the data showed no significant variation with age.

Simple reaction times to auditory stimuli varied with the phase of the cardiac cycle in which the stimulus was presented. Longitudinal studies showed that stimuli triggered at different phases in the ECG gave rise to different rhythmic patterns of behaviour.
