Storks (Ciconiidae) are renowned for defecating on their legs when exposed to high temperatures, a phenomenon known as "urohidrosis." Previous work suggested that this behavior can cool down the blood supply to the legs and thus prevent hyperthermia in captive storks when overheated. However, no study has quantified the magnitude or duration of its evaporative cooling effect in free‐ranging birds. Here, we combine urohidrosis data with thermal imaging and microclimate data to investigate the thermoregulatory significance of urohidrosis in White storks Ciconia ciconia during the breeding season. We show that urohidrosis can reduce leg surface temperature by up to 6.7°C (4.40 ± 1.04°C). Yet its cooling effect was of short duration (lasting no more than 2.5 min) and decreased with time since defecation. Thus, for urohidrosis to significantly contribute to heat dissipation, storks must perform it repeatedly when overheated. Indeed, an individual can perform up to 11 urohidrosis events per hour; our estimates indicate that repeated urohidrosis could represent a significant amount of heat loss during short time span, equivalent to 4% of daily field metabolic rate for an adult stork. Our results point to an absence of differences in the cooling efficiency of urohidrosis between adults and nestlings, probably because all nestlings were recorded during the last phase of the ontogeny of thermoregulation. Besides, during the hottest days, adult storks delivered water to their nestlings, which might allow them to replenish body water reserves to sustain urohidrosis and other heat dissipation behaviors such as panting or gular fluttering. Our results indicate that urohidrosis might buffer the impact of high temperatures in breeding storks, preventing overheating and lethal hyperthermia. Gaining knowledge about behavioral thermoregulation in the heat is therefore crucial to better predict the future persistence and vulnerability of species under different climate warming scenarios. There is growing evidence on the role of legs and bill as 'thermal windows' in birds coping with heat stress. However, there is a lack of empirical work examining the relationship between the relative bill and/or leg surface areas and key thermoregulatory traits such as the limits of the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) or the cooling efficiency at high temperatures. Here, we explored this relationship in a Mediterranean population of Great tit (Parus major) facing increasing thermal stress in its environment. The lower and upper critical limits of the TNZ were found to be 17.7 ± 1.6°C and 34.5 ± 0.7°C, respectively, and the basal metabolic rate was 0.96 ± 0.12 ml O2 min-1 on average. The evaporative water loss (EWL) inflection point was established at 31.85 ± 0.27°C and was not significantly different from the value of the upper critical limit. No significant relationship was observed between the relative bill or tarsi size and TNZ critical limits, breadth, mass-independent VO2, or mass-independent EWL at any environmental temperature (from 10 to 40°C). However, Great tit males (but not females) with larger tarsi areas (a proxy of leg surface area) showed higher cooling efficiencies at 40°C. We found no support for the hypothesis that the bill surface area plays a significant role as a thermal window in Great tits, but the leg surface areas may play a role in males' physiological responses to high temperatures. On the one hand, we argue that the studied population occupies habitats with available microclimates and fresh water for drinking during summer, so active heat dissipation by EWL might be favored instead of dry heat loss through the bill surface. Conversely, male dominance behaviors could imply a greater dependence on cutaneous EWL through the upper leg surfaces as a consequence of higher exposure to harsh environmental conditions than faced by females. Parental care in long-lived bird species involves a trade-off between the benefits of increasing the effort expended on current offspring and the costs that this represents for future reproductive output. Under regimes of high environmental variability, long-lived seabirds can adjust their breeding effort to buffer the negative effects of this variability on their offspring. However, the potential impacts of variation in breeding effort on offspring physiology in the short term and on longer-term survival are poorly understood. In this study, we manipulated brood age through a cross-fostering experiment to assess whether increasing or decreasing parental reproductive expenditure led to costs in Blue-footed Booby Sula nebouxii chicks. Specifically, we tested the consequences of altered parental reproductive expenditure on the offspring's physiological condition (plasma metabolites, heterophil to lymphocyte ratio (H/L) and body condition index ( BCI)) and survival. Offspring from broods in which parental investment was experimentally increased showed a lower BCI and lower alkaline phosphatase levels and higher H/L ratios than controls. Conversely, offspring showed the opposite pattern when reproductive expenditure was experimentally decreased. We observed no effects of manipulation of parental investment on triglyceride levels or on survival rates. Although our findings suggest that Blue-footed Booby parents have the ability to adjust their breeding effort according to the demands of their offspring, parental effort could influence the effect of hatching order by suppressing the aggressive tendency of the senior chick. Natural and anthropogenic Iberian wetlands in southern Europe are well known for supporting large numbers of migratory Palaearctic waterbirds each winter. However, information on the geographical origin of dabbling ducks overwintering in these wetlands is scarce and mostly limited to data from ringing recoveries. Here, we used intrinsic isotopic markers to determine the geographical origin of male and female Northern Pintails Anas acuta and Eurasian Teal Anas crecca in Extremadura, inland Iberia, a key site for overwintering dabbling ducks. Additionally, we fitted six Northern Pintails with GPS- GSM tags to complement the data derived from stable isotope analysis. Most (> 70%) first calendar-year Northern Pintails were assigned to regions above 55°N, flying 2600-5600 km from their main natal regions to Extremadura. Mean values of δ2Hf varied significantly between male and female Northern Pintails, suggesting that the sexes had different geographical origins. Data from tagged adult Northern Pintails supported the isotopic data, one male flying more than 5000 km to the coast of the Pechora Sea (Russia). Most (> 70%) first calendar-year Eurasian Teal were assigned to the region between 48° and 60°N, travelling 1500-4500 km to arrive in Extremadura. Male and female Eurasian Teal showed marginal differences in mean values of δ2Hf. In migratory dabbling ducks, pairing typically occurs on the wintering grounds, and ducks in their first winter can breed the following spring. For Northern Pintails, pair formation in Extremadura could occur between individuals with different geographical origins, which could contribute to the genetic variability of their offspring. There is a growing body of evidence that maternal antibodies transferred to offspring have potential implications in the evolutionary ecology of birds. This transfer of maternal antibodies is a potentially flexible mechanism of non-genetic inheritance by which mothers could favour some offspring over others and/or increase offspring survival, but this is a phenomenon that remains poorly understood. We examined sex-specific deposition of maternal antibodies and its effects on early (5 d) and fledging (17 d) survival in semiprecocial chicks of the gull-billed tern Gelochelidon nilotica, a long-distance migratory bird. Mothers transferred a significantly greater amount of maternal antibodies to sons than to daughters. We found evidence for positive associations between maternal antibody levels at hatching and early offspring survival. Investment in immunity is commonly viewed as an energetically costly activity in birds. Although several studies have focused on the energy cost of mounting an immune response and its concomitant physiological trade-offs, nothing is known about the metabolic adjustments experienced by immunochallenged birds under resource limitation, or about the basal metabolism cost of mounting cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses in bird species other than non-migratory passerines. Here we measured the basal metabolic rate (BMR), inflammatory response, and body mass in ad libitum fed and food-restricted little ringed plovers Charadrius dubius challenged with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) in order to assess the energy cost, the strength, and the time course of the CMI response in a long-distance migratory bird in different nutritional states. We found that ad libitum birds injected with PHA significantly increased both mass-independent BMR and inflammatory response, whereas birds with an induced food restriction-immune response overlap experienced a mass-independent BMR downregulation and decreased inflammatory response relative to ad libitum birds. We suggest that both the BMR downregulation and the diminished inflammatory response observed in birds facing such an overlap could be energy-saving mechanisms to maintain the body mass above a critical level and maximize fitness.
