Low demands on maintenance and 100% recyclability cause the growing popularity of weathering steel bridges worldwide. Recent experimental results made it possible to derive generic probabilistic models describing long‐term corrosion losses for various types of weathering steels and exposures. In the contribution, these probabilistic models are applied in reliability assessment. For representative structural members and failure modes, the material allowances for the loss of thickness are derived to achieve a specified target reliability in exposures corresponding to Corrosivity Categories C2 and C3. Numerical analysis reveals that the allowances recommended by the ECCS guideline are generally conservative. For larger sections exposed in C2, a "no allowance" strategy might even be considered. For C3, design allowance of about 0.5‐0.6 mm is then determined by the probabilistic approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Corrosion of weathering steels in outdoor conditions has been observed since their pioneering applications in construction in the 1960s. Changing environmental conditions such as decreasing SO2 concentration and changes in temperature and relative air humidity affect the formation and development of a protective layer of corrosion products on the surface of these steels. The study compares the long‐term corrosion rates of weathering steels according to EN ISO 9224 with the measured rates for various environments in the Czech Republic and abroad, with a focus on sites with high concentrations of chlorides from de‐icing salts. When considering related uncertainties, the corrosion rate models provide estimates in a wide range, and in‐situ measurements can significantly improve corrosion loss predictions. The reliability of bridges made of weathering steels with a well‐developed protective layer is insignificantly affected by corrosion. Correction of failure probability of bridges based on experimental load tests Various empirical studies show that the real load‐bearing capacity of road bridges under traffic loads is on average significantly higher than that indicated by deterministic calculation, mainly by the partial factor method for structural design. One cause is, for example, ignoring the contribution of secondary elements to the load‐bearing capacity of the bridge. Since the same static models are often used to calculate the failure probability of bridges as for the deterministic calculations, there must also be an underestimation of the real load‐bearing capacity and thus an overestimation of the failure probability. Abstract: The target reliability levels recommended in various national and international documents for new and existing structures are quite different and vaguely related to types of structures and consequences of failure. The optimum reliability levels can be obtained by considering the total expected cost of the structure over the design working life. Indicative values of reliability indexes are given in EN 1990 (2002) for two reference periods, 1 year and 50 years. The annual target reliability levels βt1 are presently indicated in the recent draft of EN 1990 (2017) without any explicit link to different reference period or design working life. When determining the target reliability index for the reference period of n years that generally differs from the design working life, correlation of failure events in subsequent years should be taken into account. Considering the annual reliability index β1 an approximate formula is proposed for the reliability index βnk related to the reference period of n years and independence interval of k years. The independence interval k ≤ n corresponds to the mean time period in years for which the failures in subsequent periods of k years are assumed to be mutually independent. The operational use of the proposed formula is clarified by practical tools. The reliability differentiation reflected in consequence classes is also discussed in this contribution. Load bearing capacity can be predicted by appropriate modeling of material properties, geometry variables, and uncertainties associated with an applied model for the failure mechanism under consideration. The submitted study investigates shear resistance model uncertainties for reinforced concrete beams with and without shear reinforcement, considering large test databases and various levels of approximation offered by fib Model Code 2010. Model uncertainty is treated as a random variable and its characteristics are obtained by comparing test and model outcomes. The sensitivity of model uncertainty with respect to basic variables is analyzed. For beams with stirrups, Level III is recommended for practical applications. Its predictions are shown to be independent of the amount of shear reinforcement and have reasonable bias and dispersion around test results. For beams without shear reinforcement, the use of Level II is advisable and a distinction between lightly reinforced and moderately to heavily reinforced beams should be made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
