The explosive activity of the 2021 Tajogaite eruption eludes pigeonholing into well‐defined eruption styles, with a variety of pyroclast ejection modes occurring both alternately and simultaneously at multiple vents. Visually, we defined four endmembers of explosive activity, referred to as fountaining, spattering, ash‐poor jets and ash‐rich jets. To capture the physical parameters of these activities, we deployed a camera array including one high‐speed camera and three high‐definition cameras in two field campaigns. Transitions between and fluctuations within activity occurred at the time scale of minutes to hours, likely driven by the same shallow conduit and vent processes controlling Strombolian activity at other volcanoes, but at higher gas and magma fluxes. From a physical standpoint, mean pyroclast rise velocity ranged 5–50 m/s, maximum ejection velocity 10–220 m/s, and sub‐second mass flux of lapilli to bomb‐sized pyroclasts at the vent 0.2–200 × 103 kg/s. The largest mass flux occurred during fountaining, which contributed by far more than other activities to cone building. All explosive activity exhibited well‐defined pyroclast ejection pulses, and we found a positive correlation between the occurrence rate of ejection pulses and maximum pyroclast ejection velocity. Despite orders of magnitude variations, physical parameters shift gradually with no boundary from one activity endmember to another. As such, attributing this explosive activity specifically to any currently defined style variations is arbitrary and potentially misleading. The highly variable explosive activity of the Tajogaite eruption recalls previous definitions of violent Strombolian eruptions, an eruption style whose pyroclast ejection dynamics, however, were so far largely undefined. Plain Language Summary: The 2021 Tajogaite volcanic eruption offered a rare opportunity to study in detail the physical properties and the controlling factors of explosive activity driven by basaltic magmas. The activity lasted almost uninterrupted for almost 3 months and had visually different manifestations occurring simultaneously and alternating at different volcanic vents. To study the explosive activity, we used one high‐speed camera, taking short, slow motion videos, and three commercial grade high‐definition camcorders recording for many hours. We found that the activity changed in features and intensity at the time scale of minutes to hours, largely controlled by changes in the size and debris cover of the vent, magma viscosity, and magma flux and gas content. The ejection velocity of large volcanic particles ranged 5–220 m/s, with mean values around 10–50 m/s. The mass flux of particles erupted reached peaks of 200 metric tons per second. Particle ejection was never steady but always proceeded in pulses, which were more frequent if the ejection velocity was higher. Our measurements show that the current classification schemes for explosive eruptions of basaltic magmas do not adequately describe the activity of the Tajogaite eruption, which represents a type of eruption that was not yet measured in detail. We present a summary of the splinter session 'Sun-like stars unlike the Sun' that was held on June 9, 2016, as part of the Cool Stars 19 conference (Uppsala, Sweden), in which the main limitations (in the theory and observations) in the derivation of very precise stellar parameters and chemical abundances of Sun-like stars were discussed. The most important and most debated processes that can produce chemical peculiarities in solar-type stars were outlined and discussed. Finally, in an open discussion between all the participants, we tried to identify new pathways and prospects toward future solutions of the currently open questions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Efficacy of heparin and low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment has been suggested. The multimatrix oral formulation MMX releases active drugs in the colon, avoiding systemic absorption. Parnaparin sodium is the LMWH chosen to be carried in the MMX formulation. Aim To assess the safety of three different oral dosages (70, 140 and 210 mg once daily) of Parnaparin-MMX (CB-01-05) in left-sided ulcerative colitis (UC). Methods Left-sided UC patients, with a mild-to-moderate relapse were enrolled. All patients received Parnaparin-MMX for 8 weeks. Clinical Activity Index (CAI), Disease Activity Index (DAI), Endoscopic Activity Index and IBD-QoL were assessed throughout the study. A strict clinical and laboratory follow-up, including assessment of anti-factor Xa activity, was performed. Clinical remission was defined as CAI <4. Results Ten UC patients were enrolled. One patient retired for clinical deterioration. No relevant side effects, including either interference with haemostasis parameters or increased bleeding, were observed. At the end of the treatment, seven patients (70%) were in clinical remission, only one achieving endoscopic healing. Mean final CAI, DAI and IBD-QoL scores were significantly improved from baseline. Conclusions Parnaparin-MMX appears to be a safe treatment option in mild-to-moderate UC. Controlled studies are warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Celiac disease is sometimes associated with neurological complications. Only one case of celiac disease associated with migraine and cerebral calcifications has been reported. We present a patient with migraine (with and without aura) in whom neuroimaging revealed cerebral calcifications in the occipital and parietal regions bilaterally. Visual examination showed bilateral double scotoma, and further investigations revealed celiac disease. Migraine may on occasion be a sentinel symptom of mild celiac disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: It is controversial whether CARD15 variants are truly associated with a more severe form of Crohn's disease. The relative role of CARD15 genotype and smoking in Crohn's disease progression is also debated. Aim: To investigate the association between CARD15 variants and history of resective surgery in patients with Crohn's ileal disease, taking into account smoking as a possible confounding factor. Methods: We originally assessed CARD15 genotype in 239 north Italian Crohn's disease patients (mean follow-up: 10.1 ± 8.1 years). We then focused on 193 patients with proven ileal involvement, 70 of whom (36.3%) carried CARD15-mutated alleles (G908R, R702W, L1007fs). Results: Carriage of CARD15 variants was positively associated with family history and ileal-only disease and negatively associated with uncomplicated behaviour at maximal follow-up ( P < 0.05). Ileal resection was the only variable independently associated with CARD15 variants at multivariate analysis (OR 3.8; 95% CI 1.6–9.2; P = 0.003). Kaplan–Meier analysis showed that ileal resection was favoured both by CARD15 variant-carriage ( P = 0.01) and by smoking ( P = 0.05), but smoking did not affect progression to surgery in variant carriers ( P = 0.31). Thirteen of 14 (93%) patients being resection-free at 15-year follow-up, had CARD15 wild-type genotype ( P = 0.01), whereas only seven (50%) had never smoked ( P = 1.0). Conclusions: In summary, CARD15 variant-associated Crohn's ileitis is virtually committed to stricturing and/or penetrating disease and, eventually, to resective surgery. Smoking accelerates progression to surgery in patients with wild-type CARD15 genotype, but it seems to exert no additional effect in CARD15-variant carriers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Baricitinib treatment in adults with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) has demonstrated rapid improvements in itch as well as AD sign severity and affected body surface area as assessed by the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) total score, whether administered as monotherapy or in combination with topical corticosteroids (TCS). As EASI clinical signs differ in time course and associated antecedents, the effects of baricitinib on each individual clinical sign are of interest., Objectives: In this post hoc analysis, we aimed to investigate the effects of baricitinib on individual EASI subscores, namely excoriation, oedema/papulation, erythema and lichenification, in both monotherapy and TCS combination therapy trials., Methods: We analysed the percent change from baseline in individual EASI subscores from three phase-III, double-blind, 16-week trials of baricitinib in monotherapy (BREEZE-AD1/BREEZE-AD2) and TCS combination therapy (BREEZE-AD7) cohorts via mixed model repeated measures (MMRM)., Results: Baricitinib 4 mg showed rapid and sustained improvements in all four clinical signs in both cohorts. Significant effects emerged at week 1 for excoriation, oedema/papulation and erythema scores in monotherapy (p < 0.001) and TCS combination therapy (p < 0.001, p < 0.01, p < 0.001), plateaued at week 4, and remained significant versus placebo through week 16. The effect on lichenification scores also emerged early, at week 1 in monotherapy (p < 0.05) and week 2 in combination therapy (p < 0.001), with scores continuously improving without a clear plateau. Effect magnitude was highest in excoriation scores, exhibiting near-maximal reduction in week 1 of monotherapy and remaining highest across all timepoints in combination therapy., Conclusions: Rapid and sustained improvements were observed across clinical signs of inflammation and particularly on excoriation following baricitinib treatment. Our findings suggest that selective inhibition of janus kinases 1 and 2 leads to rapid and sustained control of skin inflammation, and that rapid reductions in itch translate into early disruption of the itch-scratch cycle., (© 2023 The Authors. Background: The role of dopamine D1 receptors and Extracellular signal Regulated Kinase (ERK) in the motivational properties of drugs can be studied by place-conditioning. Recent advances have shown that the motivational properties of ethanol, determined by place-conditioning, are mediated by its metabolic conversion into acetaldehyde. To date, the role of D1 receptors and ERK activation in acetaldehyde-elicited place preference has not been determined. The aim of this study was to assess the role of D1 receptors blockade and MEK inhibition in the acquisition of acetaldehyde-elicited conditioned place preference., Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to repeated pairings with 1 compartment of the conditioning apparatus immediately following acetaldehyde (20 mg/kg i.g.) or ethanol (1 g/kg i.g.) administration. The D1 receptor antagonist, SCH 39166 (50 microg/kg s.c.), was administered 10 minutes before acetaldehyde or ethanol administration. In order to study the role of activated ERK in the acetaldehyde-elicited place preference, rats were administered the MEK inhibitor, PD98059 (1, 30, and 90 microg i.c.v.), 10 or 30 minutes before acetaldehyde. To verify the specificity of these effects, we also studied whether PD98059 pretreatment could affect morphine (1 mg/kg s.c.)-elicited place preference., Results: Both acetaldehyde and ethanol elicited significant place preferences and these were prevented by pretreatment with SCH 39166. In addition, pretreatment with PD98059, dose (30 and 90 but not 1 microg i.c.v.) and time (10 but not 30 minutes before) dependently, prevented the acquisition of acetaldehyde- and significantly reduced the acquisition of morphine-elicited conditioned place preference., Conclusions: These results confirm that acetaldehyde and ethanol elicit conditioned place preference and demonstrate that D1 receptors are critically involved in these effects. Furthermore, the finding that PD98059 prevents the acquisition of acetaldehyde-elicited conditioned place preference highlights the importance of the D1 receptor-ERK pathway in its motivational effects.

Aluminium germanium lithium, AlGeLi, crystallizes in two cubic dimorphs. The structure of the F-43m form, already inferred from powder data, has been confirmed by both powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The second dimorph, not previously identified, adopts a disordered centrosymmetric structure with space group Fm-3m.

The title compound, lithium aluminium silicide (15/3/6), crystallizes in the hexagonal centrosymmetric space group P6(3)/m. The three-dimensional structure of this ternary compound may be depicted as two interpenetrating lattices, namely a graphite-like Li(3)Al(3)Si(6) layer and a distorted diamond-like lithium lattice. As is commonly found for LiAl alloys, the Li and Al atoms are found to share some crystallographic sites. The diamond-like lattice is built up of Li cations, and the graphite-like anionic layer is composed of Si, Al and Li atoms in which Si and Al are covalently bonded [Si-Al = 2.4672 (4) A].
