Aims: To examine associations between weight self‐stigma and healthy diet or physical activity, and potential moderating effects of self‐esteem, diabetes self‐efficacy, and diabetes social support, among adults with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Diabetes MILES‐2 data were used, an Australian cross‐sectional online survey. Participants with type 2 diabetes who considered themselves overweight, and reported concern about weight management (N = 726; 48% insulin‐treated), completed the Weight Self‐Stigma Questionnaire (WSSQ; total score and subscales: self‐devaluation, fear of enacted stigma), measures of diabetes self‐care (diet, exercise), and hypothesised psychosocial moderators (self‐esteem, diabetes self‐efficacy, and diabetes social support). Adjusted linear regression tested associations and interaction effects, separately by insulin treatment status. Results: Greater weight self‐stigma (WSSQ total) was associated with less optimal dietary self‐care (both groups: β = −0.3), and with a lower level of exercise (non‐insulin only: β = −0.2; all p < 0.001). All hypothesised moderators were negatively associated with weight self‐stigma (range r = −0.2 to r = −0.5). Positive associations were identified between the hypothesised moderators and self‐care behaviours (strongest between diet and diabetes self‐efficacy, r = > 0.5). No significant interaction effects were observed. Conclusions: This study provides novel evidence of negative associations between weight self‐stigma and self‐care behaviours among adults with type 2 diabetes. Weight self‐stigma is a demonstrated barrier to self‐care behaviours in type 2 diabetes cohorts. ABSTRACT Whether higher family socio‐economic status (SES) drives adolescents to engage in more prosocial behaviours is a topic of debate. Previous research has typically concentrated on the association between self‐reported subjective SES and their prosocial behaviours. Drawing from the Ecological Systems Theory, this study incorporates two proximal factors—parental educational expectations (PEE) and adolescent's self‐esteem—into a chained mediation model to explore the mechanisms of the distal factor, family SES, links to adolescents' prosocial behaviour. An analysis of 600 caregiver–child pairs (with children ranging from Grades 3 to 12, comprising 64.3% boys) supports the negative link between family SES and prosocial behaviour and unexpectedly indicates the suppressing mediating effect of PEE and self‐esteem. Results suggest that prosocial motivation is not solely linked with material resources; it also intertwines with family educational perspectives and the development of individual self‐worth. Because language brokering requires adolescents to be in extended close contact with parents, their subjective experiences of language brokering may relate to their individual well‐being through their acculturation congruence with their parents.Three hundred four bilingual participants aged 13 to 17 years completed an online questionnaire about demographics, translating activities, acculturation congruence, and self‐esteem. From affirmative responses to the translation item, a subsample of 188 language brokers was created for analyses of indirect effects.There were no significant differences between language brokers and non–language brokers on acculturation congruence. Among the language brokers, acculturation congruence had indirect effects on LB efficacy, burden, positive, and negative attitudes to self‐esteem.There is no evidence of an acculturation gap for language brokers and non–language brokers. This article presents an ethnographic study conducted in French pre‐kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms, investigating how education establishes and reinforces relations of sociocultural dominance. Building on Bourdieu and Passeron's concept of symbolic violence, we seek to uncover the mechanisms through which school socialization encourages the acceptance of the hierarchies it generates. The data suggest that this persuasion relies on set of interrelated processes: Schools organize the unequal profitability of family cultural practices and knowledge, obscure the realities of learning, and foster a meritocratic myth that naturalizes these inequalities. Moreover, children actively participate in their own subordination without realizing it. By documenting these processes, the study provides critical insights into how everyday schooling practices not only perpetuate social inequalities but also shape early on the idea that students form of themselves as both students and individuals and intensify concerns about self‐worth. Self‐esteem and emotion dysregulation appear to be important factors in the psychological well‐being of trauma survivors. On the one hand, self‐esteem may act as a shield against the psychological consequences of traumatic experiences; on the other hand, emotion regulation can affect the way individuals deal with post‐traumatic affects (e.g., fear, terror, shame, and guilt). Consequently, the objective of this study was to investigate the role that emotion dysregulation and self‐esteem play in the well‐being of a sample of women after the traumatic experience of intimate partner violence (IPV). This study involved 282 women (meanage = 41.55, SD = 10.52) who experienced IPV in the last year. Conditional process analyses and Johnson‐Neyman analysis for regions of significance were performed. The results showed that emotion dysregulation mediated the relationship between post‐trauma affectivity (i.e., fear, terror, shame and guilt) and survivors' well‐being. Furthermore, self‐esteem negatively predicted lack of well‐being and acted as a moderator of the relationship between emotion dysregulation and lack of well‐being. In this regard, through the Johnson‐Neyman analysis for regions of significance, it was possible to identify a cut‐off value above which the relationship between emotion dysregulation and lack of well‐being became non‐statistically significant. This study contributed to understanding the role that emotion dysregulation and self‐esteem play in the well‐being of IPV survivors. In this regard, clinical implications will be presented. The aim of this experimental research is to assess the impact of a mindfulness‐based empowerment program applied to women who have experienced violence on their levels of self‐compassion, self‐esteem and coping with stress. The study was a randomised controlled trial with a control group. Participants were randomly assigned to the experimental group (EG, n1 = 27) and the control group (CG, n2 = 26) from women who had experienced violence. Descriptive statistical methods and t‐tests for dependent and independent groups were employed in data analysis. After the mindfulness‐based empowerment program, the intervention group exhibited a statistically significant high effect size in post‐intervention measurements compared to the control group for the Self‐Compassion Scale, Coopersmith Self‐Esteem Inventory and Coping Styles Scale total and subscale mean scores (p < 0.001). The mindfulness‐based empowerment program has been found to enhance self‐compassion, self‐esteem and coping levels in women who have experienced violence. Therefore, it is recommended to promote the widespread adoption of mindfulness‐based interventions for individuals who have undergone trauma, such as violence, to facilitate their re‐empowerment and functional recovery. Background: Gender stereotypes about women and men are prevalent in computer science (CS). The study's goal was to investigate the role of gender bias in computer‐supported collaborative learning (CSCL) in a CS context by elaborating on gendered experiences in the perception of individual and team performance in mixed‐gender teams in a hackathon. Dataset: The dataset of this study was collected at a 3‐day CSCL hackathon aimed at gaining knowledge on designing educational games. We assigned the 28 participants of the hackathon to mixed‐gender groups and asked them to fill out a questionnaire, including collective self‐esteem scales, before the start. During the hackathon, we again asked the participants to complete team progress evaluation surveys individually after each workday. Lastly, we interviewed 11 participants to elaborate on the quantitative findings with qualitative data. Methodology: We applied an exploratory mixed‐method approach using quantitative survey data at several time points during the hackathon, which was analysed with clustering and descriptive statistics and complemented with qualitative coding of interviews with participants. Results: The results demonstrate that social and psychological aspects of gender are important for understanding the outcomes and perceptions of gender in a CS hackathon. The analysis further suggests that collective self‐esteem can be used as a key variable to assess gender differences in CSCL studies, providing explanatory benefits. More broadly, results gave reason to believe that CSCL in the CS domain currently severely fails to account for gender representation. Interviewed participants raised substantial concerns about the underlying gender stereotypes prevalent in communication, team roles, and work division. We provide recommendations for practitioners seeking to create gender‐inclusive and counter‐stereotypical CSCL and wider, critical proposals for how we, as researchers, can assess gender with appropriate methodologies and interventions in computer science education. Lay Description: What is already known about this topic?: In the field of computer‐supported collaborative learning (CSCL), most studies argue that group work supports the development of social, cognitive, and online collaborative teamwork skills and creates a more inclusive learning environment.Because women represent non‐majority users in CSCL, especially when applied in the computer science domain, this notion is questioned by studies finding that diversity inclusion in CSCL is hampered through gender stereotypes still present in CS and impacts women's and other gender minorities' learning experiences.Another problem is that the role of gender in CSCL research has scarcely been addressed by the CSCL community yet. Thus, research methodologies trying to reveal gender differences seldomly address gender majority‐minority relations in learning in understanding the role of gender in shaping these learning experiences. Non‐suicidal self‐injury (NSSI) is an emerging concern in the field of public health. The objective of this study is to develop a conditional process model to investigate the relationship between social anxiety and NSSI, and the role of impulsiveness and self‐esteem in this relationship. A convenience sample of 2717 university students (Mage = 19.81, 22.49% male) from Southern China was recruited. The age range of the participants is between 18 and 25 years. The data were analysed using Spearman correlation analysis, mediation analysis and moderation analysis. The study revealed a positive correlation between social anxiety and NSSI, with impulsiveness serving as a mediating factor in this association. The relationship between social anxiety and NSSI, impulsiveness and social anxiety, impulsiveness and NSSI were all found to be moderated by self‐esteem. The prevalence of NSSI among college students exhibited a strong association with social anxiety and impulsiveness. The present investigation additionally demonstrated that there was no significant association between social anxiety, impulsivity and NSSI when high self‐esteem was included. We assessed, with validated instruments, whether family atmosphere, religiosity or lifestyle were significant correlates of self‐esteem and/or self‐control among adolescents (Grades 7–12, n = 2067) in Saudi Arabia. Participants' mean age was 15.5 years; 64% were boys. Higher scores in family atmosphere and religiosity and having fewer lifestyle risk factors were significantly related to higher self‐esteem and self‐control scores (p <.05; adjusted linear regression models). The odds of scoring low (below median) in both self‐esteem and self‐control decreased incrementally across the increasing quartiles of family atmosphere and religiosity; the odds decreased incrementally across decreasing number of lifestyle risk factors (p <.05; adjusted multinomial regression). However, the absence of validated guidelines and the controversy surrounding vaginoplasty surgery have limited our understanding of the long‐term outcomes and impact on quality of life and psychosexual functioning for women with a short or absent vagina. This study provides valuable insights into the Australian context, reflecting the treatment approaches and long‐term psychosocial outcomes for this patient group.This study aimed to assess the long‐term effects of vaginal dilation, with or without vaginoplasty surgery, on quality of life and psychosexual functioning in women diagnosed with a short or absent vagina.A mixed‐methods design was employed, utilising validated psychometric tools and a semi‐structured interview. The study included patients with disorders of sex development aged above 16 who underwent vaginal dilator therapy between 2012 and 2020, as well as healthy age‐matched controls. The research was conducted at a single tertiary hospital in Sydney, NSW, Australia.The questionnaire was completed by 30 participants, including 11 non‐surgical cases, four surgical cases, and 15 controls. The mean age at inclusion was 30.8 ± 14.1 years. The non‐surgical group exhibited significantly higher scores indicating a greater ‘need for help’ compared to the surgical group (30.0 ± 19.3 and 4.5 ± 9.0; P = 0.0121). No other statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups.Choice of treatment should consider various factors, including patient preference and responsiveness to treatment. These findings emphasise the importance of personalised care in the Australian context and highlight the need for further research, particularly with larger and more homogenous sample sizes, to enhance clinical decision‐making in this population. Attending to the phone while interacting face‐to‐face with another person, a behaviour known as phubbing, can be detrimental to the phubbed person's psychological wellbeing. Recent research revealed that phubbing friends and partners indirectly affected the phubbed individual's wellbeing. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of children's phubbing on parents' psychological wellbeing; not the effect of parents' phubbing on children's psychological wellbeing, which has been the focus of most of current research. Two hundred and sixty six (266) parents of smartphone users participated in a web survey. The questionnaire measured parents' experience of being phubbed by their children, psychological wellbeing, relationship satisfaction, loneliness, and self‐esteem. The analysis showed a significant indirect effect of children's phubbing on parents' psychological wellbeing through the mediating roles of relationship satisfaction and loneliness. Children's phubbing increased parents' feelings of loneliness, and this rise in levels of loneliness worsened parents' psychological wellbeing. Similarly, children's phubbing decreased parents' relationship satisfaction with their children, and this decrease in feelings of relationship satisfaction worsened parents' psychological wellbeing. Additionally, children's phubbing affected parents' psychological wellbeing through the mediating roles of relationship satisfaction and loneliness in sequence (chain effect). As children's phubbing increased parents' feelings of loneliness, parents' relationship satisfaction with their children dropped. The lowering of feelings of relationship satisfaction worsened parents' psychological wellbeing. A moderated mediation analysis revealed that children's phubbing decreased parents' relationship satisfaction with their children, especially for parents who are low on self‐esteem. The online grooming risk (OGR) among adolescents has risen due to the development of technology and the growing use of social media. Although crucial links have been described among family support, self‐esteem and OGR, little is known about the mechanisms problematic Internet usage has in these links. This study aims to investigate the mediating role of problematic Internet usage in the relationship among family support, self‐esteem and OGR. The participants consist of a total of 406 adolescents in Türkiye, with 283 girls and 123 boys (age, mean ± standard deviation = 16.25 ± 1.68). The relationships among the variables were examined using the Pearson correlation, while mediation analyses were carried out using structural equation modelling. Correlational analyses reveal family support to be negatively associated with both OGR and problematic Internet usage. Meanwhile, family support was positively correlated with self‐esteem. Similarly, a positive and statistically significant relationship was determined between OGR and problematic Internet usage. The results indicate problematic Internet usage to mediate the relationship between family support and OGR as well as the relationship between self‐esteem and OGR. These results highlight the importance of paying attention to adolescents' mental health regarding problematic Internet usage by considering the protective factors of self‐esteem and family support due to their close association with OGR. Immigrants may experience many psychosocial problems when migrating from a home to a host country, including social isolation. Social exclusion is also important among the problems experienced by immigrants. This study aims to determine the factors affecting Afghan immigrants' perceived social exclusion in Türkiye. Accordingly, a cross‐sectional study was conducted on 211 Afghan immigrants (Mage = 30.66, SD = 9), 24% of whom were females. The socio‐demographic information form, social exclusion scale, self‐esteem rating scale, and life satisfaction scale were used to collect data in this study. The findings showed that Turkish language proficiency, the length of residence in Türkiye, working status in Türkiye, life satisfaction, and negative self‐esteem were predictor factors for social exclusion. Considering the results, suggestions to decision‐makers and mental health professionals to reduce the perceived social exclusion of Afghan immigrants are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although studies examined depressive symptoms across adolescence, the impact of school transitions is often neglected. This study examined trajectories of depressive symptoms surrounding the transition to vocational education. Additionally, it examined gender differences and co‐occurring trajectories of parental emotional support and adolescents' self‐esteem. The sample comprised 840 adolescents and their parents (53% boys, 92% German, ageat_T1 = 16–19, average participation rate = 3.44). Adolescents reported trait items for depressive symptoms from the State‐Trait‐Depression Scale. Heterogeneous linear mixed models revealed four trajectories, with the majority exhibiting relatively stable low levels of depressive symptoms in two distinct trajectories. However, 10% experienced temporary increases, while another 10% experienced temporary decreases following the transition. Initial high levels of parental emotional support seemed to co‐occur with temporary decreases in depressive symptoms, whereas self‐esteem co‐occurred with low levels of depressive symptoms. Although school transitions may provide new opportunities and may induce stress, the transition to vocational education had little to no relation to self‐reported trait items of depressive symptoms in the present study. Misanthropy, the opposite of philanthropy, represents brand wrongdoings that harm humanity and can be more widespread. Consumer awareness of brand misanthropy and subsequent retaliation against brands are on the rise and pose a more significant managerial challenge than ever before. Despite its growing importance, few studies have explored the connection between consumer's moral decision‐making in the event of brand misanthropy and subsequent avoidance behaviour. Using dual process theory, we expand the rationalist perspective within the field of moral decision‐making by considering the distinct mechanisms through which moral judgment influences consumer brand avoidance behaviour. Using a scenario‐based experiment paired with a survey, our findings suggest that moral judgments positively influence brand avoidance when exposed to brand misanthropy. We also found that moral obligation mediates between moral judgment and brand avoidance. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate that self‐esteem attenuates peoples' propensity to avoid brands. Managerially, our research offers fresh insights and guidance for recognizing and recommending solutions to reduce anti‐brand behaviours in the event of brand misanthropy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Self‐quantification technology is increasingly and irrevocably transforming consumers' relationships with their own minds and bodies. However, existing research findings on the contribution of self‐quantification to consumer well‐being are disparate. Given the popularity of self‐quantification technology among consumers in the post‐pandemic era and its inherent transformative nature, it is surprising that this gap remains unaddressed. To resolve this inconsistency and to examine how and when self‐quantification influences consumer well‐being, we conduct a meta‐analysis of consumer well‐being in the context of self‐quantification technology. Our findings reveal that self‐quantification positively influences consumer well‐being. However, self‐quantification also negatively affects consumer well‐being through body image and self‐esteem. The systematic moderation effects of cultural dimensions (e.g., uncertainty avoidance and individualism), prior experience, data sharing, and sample characteristics on the relationship between self‐quantification and consumer well‐being are also confirmed. While uncertainty avoidance, prior experience, and data sharing accentuate the positive effects of self‐quantification on consumer well‐being, an individualistic culture attenuates this influence. This study contributes to the consumer well‐being literature and extends objectification theory in the context of self‐quantification. These findings will guide practitioners and policymakers in devising strategies and policies to allow self‐quantification technology to be used in a way that enhances consumers' health and well‐being. Background: As a sense of an intense stressor, perceived peer victimization can cause adverse effects on mental health, like depressive symptoms. Yet, little is known about the neurobiological mechanisms underlying how perceived peer victimization causes and maintains depressive symptoms in preadolescence. Methods: Here we investigate the effects of peer victimization on amygdala subregional functional connectivity in 101 preadolescent migrant children, and their relations to depressive symptoms and potential protective factors of self‐esteem and daily cortisol. Further control analyses were conducted to verify whether there are any specific effects in migrant children compared to 54 age‐matched preadolescent children from nonmigrant background. Results: Children with higher perceived peer victimization exhibited greater intrinsic functional connectivity of the amygdala with the middle frontal gyrus extending into the superior frontal gyrus. Perceived peer victimization could account for an indirect association between amygdala hyperconnectivity and depressive symptoms. Moderated mediation analyses revealed that basolateral amygdala connectivity with the superior frontal gyrus acted as a neural marker linking peer victimization and greater risk for depressive symptoms only in preadolescent children with low self‐esteem or low daily cortisol. Conclusions: These findings suggest that considering neurobiological vulnerability and psychophysiological factors may gain a nuanced understanding of the adverse effects of perceived peer victimization on depressive symptoms, a risk for internalizing pathology. This study explored the mediation role of follower organization‐based self‐esteem (OBSE) and the moderation role of workplace friendship in the relationship between transformational leadership and follower qualitative job insecurity. We adopted a three‐wave longitudinal design and collected survey data from 142 Chilean employees. Cross‐lagged mediation panel analysis indicated that transformational leadership had a lagged effect on follower OBSE, which, in turn, had a lagged effect on follower qualitative job insecurity. Further, follower workplace friendship moderated the effect of transformational leadership on follower OBSE such that transformational leadership only promoted follower OBSE when followers had high workplace friendship but did not significantly moderate the indirect effect of transformational leadership on follower qualitative job insecurity via OBSE. Integrating the leadership literature with the job insecurity literature, our study takes the first attempt to explore how, why, and when transformational leadership may influence follower qualitative job insecurity. Prior research has shown that customer incivility impacts targeted employees' performance. Yet, whether such experiences also influence bystander employees has been overlooked. In this work, we take a third‐party perspective and suggest that observed customer‐to‐colleague incivility may have a positive impact on bystander employees' service performance. Drawing on social learning theory, we develop a model where we study the consequence of observed customer‐to‐colleague incivility on service performance through self‐reflection. A two‐week experience sampling study with data collected from 99 nurses revealed that, observed daily customer‐to‐colleague incivility was positively related to bystander employees' daily self‐reflection, which in turn was positively associated with their daily service performance. Moreover, we identified performance‐based self‐esteem (i.e., the importance of performance to self‐esteem) as a key boundary condition that explains for whom witnessing customer‐to‐colleague incivility is more likely to engender higher self‐reflection. Objective: This study examines the association between psychosocial risk and protective factors and a wide range of psychosocial outcomes including emotional, social, cognitive, and physical domains in childhood cancer survivors (CCS). Methods: CCS from the Dutch Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (DCCSS)‐LATER cohort (diagnosed 1963–2001) part 2 (age ≥ 18 years, diagnosed < 18 years, ≥ 5 years since diagnosis) completed questionnaires on psychosocial risk and protective factors (Benefit and Burden Scale, Illness Cognition Questionnaire, Rosenberg Self‐Esteem Scale, and Impact of Cancer Scale), and psychosocial outcomes (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Self‐Rating Scale for Post‐Traumatic Stress Disorder, TNO‐AZL Questionnaire for Adult Health‐Related Quality of Life, and Short Form‐36). Associations were assessed with regression analysis, adjusting for attained age, sex, number of health conditions, and time since diagnosis, while correcting for multiple testing (p < 0.004). Results: A total of 1382 CCS participated, all diagnosed ≥ 15 years ago. The mean age of participating CCS was 36 years, and 51% were female. Perceived benefit and burden, acceptance, and helplessness, self‐esteem and social support were associated with the psychosocial outcomes. In the models including all psychosocial factors, most associations with psychosocial outcomes were seen for self‐esteem (10×), and perceived burden (9×). Self‐esteem (all β ≤ 0.47) and perceived burden (all β ≤ 0.38) demonstrated strongest associations of medium/large size. Conclusions: Perceptions of childhood cancer, illness cognitions, self‐esteem, and social support play a role in explaining psychosocial functioning in CCS, outweighing the influence of socio‐demographic and medical variables. Addressing negative perceptions and reducing feelings of helplessness, while promoting acceptance, self‐esteem, and social support, could provide intervention targets for CCS who encounter psychosocial challenges. Aim: Schizophrenia is a leading cause of disability worldwide; early detection and intervention are critical. Early in their illness, individuals at clinical high‐risk (CHR) for psychosis have subthreshold psychotic symptoms that are often derogatory and self‐directed. We hypothesized that CHR participants with negative self‐reference (NSR) as a component of subthreshold psychosis would also have higher levels of social anxiety and depression, lower self‐esteem and lower social/role/global functioning as compared with CHR participants without NSR. Methods: One hundred and sixty‐eight participants from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded Regroup Cognitive Behavioural Social Skills Training (CBSST) study were included. Clinical vignettes that included the Scale of Psychosis‐Risk Symptoms were coded categorically to indicate whether NSR was present. t‐tests were used to determine the association between NSR, symptom, and functional measures. Results: Participants with NSR demonstrated significantly more social interaction anxiety (p <.001), negative beliefs about the self (p ≤.001), defeatist beliefs (p <.05), depressive symptoms (p <.05) and positive symptoms (p <.005). There were no significant differences in social self‐efficacy, positive or negative beliefs about others, positive beliefs about the self or psychosocial functioning between the two groups. Conclusions: Clinically significant differences were found between CHR participants with and without NSR, suggesting that this may be a useful factor to identify and address. Introduction: Subjective well‐being, an important index for measuring mental health, is presently declining among junior high school students. Envy, one of their common emotions, is inextricably linked to subjective well‐being. Based on the Dual Envy Theory, our research explores the bidirectional relationship between benign‐malicious envy and subjective well‐being. The mediating role of self‐esteem, as well as the related gender differences, is examined. Methods: Chinese middle school students (n = 1566, boys 50.3%, age = 13.96 ± 0.88 years old) were assessed at two time points over a 3‐month interval. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the longitudinal relationships among the variables. Results: (1) Cross‐lagged analysis showed a positive bidirectional relationship between benign envy and subjective well‐being and a negative bidirectional relationship between malicious envy and subjective well‐being in the total sample. However, the path from T1 subjective well‐being to T2 malicious envy in boys was not significant. (2) Self‐esteem mediated the relationship between both benign and malicious envy and subjective well‐being among both boys and girls. A Wald chi‐square test showed that T2 self‐esteem was a stronger predictor of T2 benign envy in boys than in girls. Conclusion: The results reveal a virtuous cycle of benign envy and subjective well‐being, and a vicious cycle of malicious envy and subjective well‐being, while emphasizing the role of self‐esteem in this process. Introduction: The current study aimed to examine the longitudinal associations among basic psychological need satisfaction at school (BPNSS), self‐esteem, and suicidal ideation (SI), including whether self‐esteem functioned as a mediator of the relations between BPNSS and SI at the within‐person level after disentangling between‐ and within‐person associations encompassing middle childhood to early adolescence. Methods: A total of 650 Chinese students (53.54% boys, Mage = 9.95, SD = 0.75 at Time 1) completed measures on four occasions across 1.5 years, using 6‐month intervals. Random intercept cross‐lagged panel models were applied to disaggregate between‐ and within‐person effects, thus providing greater confidence in elucidating the causal relations among study variables. Results: The results showed that at the within‐person level: (a) BPNSS negatively predicted SI; (b) BPNSS positively predicted self‐esteem; (c) Self‐esteem negatively predicted SI; and (d) BPNSS indirectly predicted SI via self‐esteem. Conclusion: These findings advanced the literature by demonstrating longitudinal associations among BPNSS, self‐esteem, and SI at the within‐person level, and highlighting the significance of distinguishing between‐ and within‐person effects in developing prevention and intervention programs aimed at reducing SI over time from middle childhood to early adolescence. Introduction: Adverse childhood experiences have long‐lasting effects on the self‐esteem of adolescents. However, the extrinsic mechanism linking them to self‐esteem, which is more modifiable, has rarely been examined. Therefore, this study examined the mediating roles of family, school, and peer social capital and the moderating role of gender in the association between adverse childhood experiences and adolescent self‐esteem. Methods: This study involved a cross‐sectional survey of first‐ and second‐grade students in the only high school in Wusu, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Data were collected in May 2023. A sample of 2539 students (M = 16.84 years old; 55.65% female) was included. The measurement models of family, school, and peer social capital were constructed using confirmatory factor analysis. The mediating roles of the three types of social capital and the moderating role of gender were examined using mediation analysis and multiple‐group analysis, respectively. Results: Family, school, and peer social capital significantly mediated the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and adolescent self‐esteem, and family social capital played the strongest role. Gender significantly moderated the direct effect of adverse childhood experiences on self‐esteem. The direct effect was significant only among girls. Conclusions: This study underscores the protective role of social capital for self‐esteem among adolescents in Northwestern China and similar areas with relatively limited social services. Research on conspiracy theories has long turned a blind eye on the role of age in explaining conspiracy beliefs. Few studies include age and those that do have yet to consider how and why age matters when it comes to the spread of conspiracy theories. In this article, we investigate the relationship between age and conspiracy beliefs with two complementary studies. In Study 1, we conduct a meta‐analysis of a large sample of studies on conspiracy beliefs published between 2014 and 2024 (k = 191; N = 374,224). The results reveal a small but robust negative association between age and conspiracy endorsement. In Study 2, we use an original multinational survey to investigate three potential mechanisms that may explain the relationship between age and conspiracy beliefs (N = 6098). We explain youth's higher beliefs in conspiracy theories by their predisposition to unconventional styles of political participation, lower levels of self‐esteem, and general political disaffection. The aims of this study were the investigation of the transition knowledge‐skills of adolescents and young adults with visual impairments, learning difficulties, or mobility impairments, and the impact of disability, individual characteristics, social support, and self‐esteem, on their transition knowledge‐skills. Apart from the questionnaire concerning the demographic/ individual characteristics of the participants, three more instruments were used: (a) the Transition Planning Inventory‐2, (b) the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (CASSS), and (c) the Rosenberg Self‐esteem Scale. The sample consisted of 169 youths with disabilities. The variable "disability" is a statistically significant predictor of transition knowledge‐skills. The total transition knowledge‐skills of participants with mobility impairments were worse than those of participants with learning difficulties and those of participants with visual impairments. Participants' transition knowledge‐skills were better when the received close friends' social support was higher. The findings of the present study also indicate that the self‐esteem of young people with disabilities has a positive effect on their transition knowledge‐skills. This paper explores the lived experience of university students with dyslexia, focusing on identity and self‐esteem. The qualitative study used semi‐structured interviews with five students with dyslexia and discussions with learning support tutors at four UK universities. Thematic analysis of the interview data revealed the impact of dyslexia's stigma on students' academic self‐concept and self‐efficacy in their studies, including how students manage stigma through decisions on when and with whom to declare dyslexia: some even rejected study support. Concealing dyslexia led to identity conflict and low self‐esteem, compounding students' already low academic self‐concept, particularly when dyslexia had been unrecognised through school. The study highlights significant academic, practical and identity consequences for students who hide dyslexia from their peers, subject lecturers or study support. The conclusions outline priorities to lessen dyslexia's stigma at university, increase student agency in their support and open dialogue on dyslexia, particularly important between students with dyslexia and subject lecturers. By exploring dyslexia's identity impacts and disclosure, this paper contributes to wider conversations on increasing the representation, achievement and retention of students with dyslexia. In four studies, we found that receiving a customized gift leads recipients to appreciate the gift more highly because of vicarious feelings of pride. This vicarious pride is the same feeling that the customizer experiences after having self‐customized a product. In the first two experiments with real‐life pairs of friends, vicarious pride was documented among recipients of customized gifts. The findings show that the relationship between customization and gift appreciation is mediated by vicarious pride. Study 3 and Study 4 replicate the results of the first series of experiments, and reveal the role of vicarious pride in enhancing state self‐esteem and, in turn, gift appreciation. Study 4 also tests the effect of a relational variable (i.e., relationship anxiety) on this relationship. Specifically, relationship anxiety affects vicarious pride, and then consequently state self‐esteem and gift appreciation, which are only enhanced by customization when the relationship is not anxious. Suicide is a serious public health problem and is the fourth leading cause of death among adolescents. Suicide ideation is the most significant predictor of suicide. However, few empirical studies have examined the relationship between stressful life events, insomnia, depression symptoms, self‐esteem, and suicide ideation among college students. This study builds on O'Connor's The integrated motivational‐volitional model of suicidal behavior theory will verify the relationship between these five factors through a large data study among college students, and further reveal the mechanisms and interventions of suicide ideation among college students. A total of 2717 (mean age = 19.81 years, 22.49% male) college students from South China participated in this behavioral and health survey. Using self‐reported questionnaires which were Adolescent Self Rating Life Events Check‐list, MINI‐C, Insomnia Severity Index, PHQ‐9, and Self‐Esteem Scale to assess the subjects' demographic information, suicide ideation, stressful life events, insomnia, depressive symptoms, and self‐esteem levels as comprehensively as possible. A moderated chain mediation model was used to validate their relationship. The results showed that stressful life events significant positively predicted insomnia symptoms, depressive symptoms, and suicide ideation. The mediating effect of depression between stressful life events and suicide ideation was significant. The chain mediating effect of insomnia and depression between stressful life events and suicide ideation was significant. However, the mediating effect of insomnia between stressful life events and suicide ideation was not significant. Also, the positive prediction of stressful life events and depression on suicide ideation was weaker when the individual's self‐esteem level was higher, and the moderated chain mediating effect was significant. This study developed a moderated chain mediation model, and proposes a new integrated stress coping‐self‐perception model of suicide ideation to discover the important role of self‐esteem levels in adolescent suicide prevention. Objective: Previous studies have highlighted the relevance of perfectionism, self‐esteem, and anxio‐depressive symptoms in anorexia nervosa (AN). However, the relationships between these factors and cardinal eating disorders (ED) symptoms remain unclear, particularly in AN subtypes. This study aimed to examine their interconnections using network analysis. Method: The sample included n = 338 inpatients with AN who completed the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Rosenberg Self‐Esteem Scale, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Using network analysis, we estimated three networks: full sample, AN‐restrictive (AN‐R) and AN‐binge/purging (AN‐BP) subtypes. We estimated central and bridge symptoms using expected influence and conducted an exploratory network comparison test to compare AN subtypes. Results: Overvaluation of Weight and Shape, Concern over Mistakes, and Personal Standards were consistently central in all networks. The most central bridge symptoms across all networks were Concern over Mistakes and Self‐Esteem. Concern over Mistakes bridged perfectionism and ED symptoms, while Self‐Esteem was highly connected to all symptom clusters. Anxiety was significantly more central in the AN‐R network compared to the AN‐BP network. Conclusions: The present study contributes to a growing body of network studies suggesting that nodes related to perfectionism are just as central as cardinal ED symptoms, indicating the relevance of perfectionism in ED pathology. The high bridge centrality of self‐esteem suggests that it may be an important link between perfectionism, mood, and ED symptoms. Future research should investigate the efficacy of targeting multiple psychological factors in the treatment of AN, as well as their potential transdiagnostic relevance. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Our study contributes to a growing body of work pointing to the relevance of perfectionism, self‐esteem, and anxiety/depression in the symptomatology of anorexia nervosa (AN). Available evidence demonstrates that individuals with body‐image disturbance (BID) are prone to suffer from depression. This systematic review provides, to our knowledge, the first synthesis of the psychological mechanism of the association between BID and depression. We conducted a thorough search of online databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycINFO, for articles published up until February 2024. The final analysis comprised a total of 23 studies that focused on the mediating or moderating effects of psychological factors between depression and BID. This review identifies self‐esteem and social support as both mediators and moderators of the relationship between BID and depression, while perceived stress acted only as a mediator. High self‐esteem and strong social support as well as low levels of perceived stress may help individuals experience lower levels of BID, thereby contributing to a decreased likelihood of depression. Interventions aimed at increasing self‐esteem, developing strong support, and decreasing perceived stress may hold promise to reduce the risk of depression in those with BID. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Personal self‐esteem (PSE) has been well recognized as a buffer against stress; however, the effects of other types of self‐esteem, such as relational self‐esteem (RSE) and collective self‐esteem (CSE), on stress have not been adequately explored. This study investigated the roles of PSE, RSE, and CSE in reducing stress response. The Rosenberg, Relational, and Collective Self‐Esteem Scales were adopted to assess PSE, RSE, and CSE, respectively. Participants underwent an acute social stress paradigm, and their acute stress response was assessed using subjective stress reports and salivary cortisol levels. Chronic stress level was estimated using the Perceived Stress Scale and hair cortisol concentration. The results showed that PSE was negatively correlated with salivary cortisol response during acute social stress; however, no significant associations were found between any type of self‐esteem and subjective stress reports. For chronic stress, all types of self‐esteem were negatively associated with perceived stress level, but not with hair cortisol concentration. Further hierarchical regression analyses suggested that only PSE negatively predicted acute salivary cortisol response and perceived stress level. Introduction: Animal‐assisted and nature‐based interventions in psychosocial treatment for various groups of clients have been studied internationally. However, there is little knowledge about how young adults with autism experience participation in such types of interventions. This clinical study aimed to describe the feasibility of animal‐assisted and nature‐based activities on a farm as a complementary intervention for young adults with autism and social withdrawal. Methods: The participants were aged 18–30 years, diagnosed with autism and social withdrawal, with no organised occupation during the previous year. Eleven of 13 participants completed a 12‐week intervention in small groups. They took part in interviews before and after, which focused on their current life situation and expectations about, and experiences of the intervention. The feasibility was described in terms of participants' characteristics, attendance, and their experiences of participating in the activity. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis. Consumer and community involvement: The intervention was formed in collaboration with participating supervisors, ordinary clinical staff, and a young woman with a user perspective. Findings: The level of feasibility was found to be high. The mean participation rate during the activity days was 75% and varied from 50 to 100%. The analysis of the participants' experiences from the activity generated three categories, "Being in a meaningful context", "Creating a comfort zone" and "Developing structure in everyday life", and each of these included sub‐categories. Conclusion: The main categories revealed a dynamic process based in meaningfulness, comfort and structure in everyday life. The positive experiences of undemanding activities, emotional relationships and non‐verbal communication with the horses were prominent and might facilitate the development of social interaction. Objective: This study provides insights into the perceptual processes contributing to positive social experiences and momentary self‐esteem in adolescents' initial social interactions. Background: A person's self‐esteem is shaped by their social experiences. However, little is known about which interpersonal perceptions are linked to momentary self‐esteem within social interactions. Identifying two key interpersonal perceptions, we examined differential associations between an individual's meta‐liking and other‐perceptions of liking by interaction partners with momentary self‐esteem. Further, we investigated how preceding personality metaperceptions (i.e., meta‐accuracy and meta‐positivity) extended these sociometer processes. Method: The current study used round‐robin data from N = 296 adolescents participating in a virtual group interaction. Social accuracy modeling was used to estimate meta‐accuracy and meta‐positivity of personality metaperceptions, and path models were used to test associations with interpersonal perceptions of liking and momentary self‐esteem. Results: Two main findings emerged: First, meta‐liking was consistently related to higher momentary self‐esteem, whereas other‐perceptions of liking were not. Second, meta‐positivity of personality metaperceptions was linked to higher meta‐liking and indirectly contributed to higher momentary self‐esteem through meta‐liking. Background and Aims: The worldwide health emergency sparked by the COVID‐19 pandemic has deeply shaken educational environments, posing unprecedented challenges to university students' well‐being. While individual links between self‐esteem, hope, and well‐being are established, their combined impacts during crises remain underexplored. Our study addresses this gap by investigating the interplay among hope, self‐esteem, and life satisfaction within the context of university students navigating the challenges posed by the pandemic. Methods: Conducting an online cross‐sectional self‐administered survey during Hong Kong's third pandemic wave, we measured hope, self‐esteem, and life satisfaction using validated scales. Three hundred and fifteen university students (211 females; mean age = 22.08; SD = 2.74) participated. Results: Through multiple regression and mediation analyses, our findings indicate that university students with elevated hope and self‐esteem scored higher on life satisfaction measures. Specifically, our analysis revealed that self‐esteem may serve as a partial mediator in the relationship between hope and life satisfaction, highlighting how heightened hope indirectly enhances life satisfaction by strengthening self‐esteem. Conclusion: This study reveals intricate relationships among hope, self‐esteem, and life satisfaction in university students, particularly during external adversities like the COVID‐19 pandemic. The implications extend to mental health interventions, emphasizing the potential benefits of cultivating hope and self‐esteem to enhance life satisfaction among university students confronting formidable challenges. Background Aims Methods Results Discussion Individuals with schizophrenia tend to have negative coping styles and low levels of self‐esteem, but it is unclear whether coping styles and self‐esteem levels are altered in people in the prodromal phase of psychosis.The study was designed to assess the role of coping style and self‐esteem in the context of different phases of schizophrenia.Recurrent Schizophrenia (ReSch), first‐episode schizophrenia patients (FEP), genetic‐high risk for psychosis (GHR) patients, and healthy controls (HC) (40 per group) were subjected to in‐person clinical interviews. The results of these interviews were then used to gauge coping style and self‐esteem using the Coping Styles Questionnaire (CSQ) and the Rosenberg's Self‐Esteem Scale (RSES). Data were analyzed through ANCOVAs and logistic regression analyses.The results found that positive coping style (CSQ problem‐solving and CSQ seeking for help) generally decline with progression through the HC, GHR, and FEP groups, while negative coping style (CSQ fantasy, CSQ repression and CSQ self‐blame) generally increase with progression through the HC, GHR, and FEP groups (except that GHR group was slightly lower than HC group in CSQ self‐blame). Results for members of ReSch group were in line with those of members of the FEP group in coping style. At the level of self‐esteem, the GHR group was similar to the HC group and significantly higher than the FEP group and the ReSch group. Logistic regression analyses indicated that GHR group patients exhibited increased negative coping styles (CSQ fantasy) relative to members of the HC group, but had greater Positive coping style (CSQ problem‐solving) than did members of the FEP group.These findings suggest that both GHR individuals experience impaired negative coping styles which expands the understanding of the psychological characteristics of the prodromal group. Contemporary diet culture is detrimental to many Western men and women, though women are disproportionately impacted. This results in poor body image, low self‐esteem, and unhealthy lifestyles. Christian discourse is not immune to the influence of diet culture, with many popular Christian pastors and authors adopting this paradigm and seeking to align it with a Christian worldview. When an understanding of a human being as an anthropological duality is brought to bear on the issue of diet culture, a more consistently Christian anthropology can resource a healthier view of the embodied self and provide resources for a robust Christian response to diet culture. Implicit and explicit self‐esteem are not commonly measured in the same children. Using a cross‐sectional design, data from 354 Croatian children (184 girls) in Grade 1 (Mage = 7.55 years) and Grade 5 (Mage = 11.58 years) were collected in Spring 2019. All children completed explicit and implicit self‐esteem measures; math and language grades were obtained. For the explicit measure, older children showed lower self‐esteem than younger children, and girls showed lower self‐esteem than boys. For the implicit measure, there were no age effects, and girls showed higher self‐esteem than boys. Although both types of self‐esteem were positively associated with academic achievement, implicit self‐esteem was associated more strongly with language than with math achievement. The current compounded economic crisis in Lebanon has increased poverty rates and widened the gap between families of different socioeconomic classes. Little is known about the impact of advertising, particularly smartphone advertising, on the self‐esteem and materialism levels of children in developing countries like Lebanon. This study aimed to measure the differences among children coming from lower and upper socioeconomic classes in the following: smartphone advertising exposure, materialism and self‐esteem, vulnerability to the effects of smartphone advertising exposure on materialism, and vulnerability to the effects of materialism on self‐esteem. It was found that advertising affected negatively the self‐esteem of the children coming from lower social classes, including the "newly poor," because in the current economic situation, children who are more exposed to advertising are more likely to believe in advertising, have lower self‐satisfaction, and believe themselves to be inferior for not owning the various products that are advertised, which lead them to become more materialistic than children from wealthier families. On the other hand, advertising had a reinforcing effect on materialism among more affluent children. In addition, and contrary to the expected, children from higher social classes, and not children from deprived households, were more susceptible to the impact of advertising on materialism. Social pressures, such as cultural norms of modesty, are thought to contribute to low self‐esteem in East Asians, and modesty is a key concept in understanding the feelings, thoughts, and social behaviors of this population. Modesty has been found to encompass three aspects: avoidance of attention‐seeking (AA), self‐effacement (SE), and other‐enhancement (OE). The current study validated the Modest Behavior Scale and examined age and gender differences in the three aspects of modesty in a sample of adults aged 20–69 years. A total of 400 Japanese individuals participated in the online survey. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analyses and simple slopes analyses revealed that older people tend not to seek attention but also not to devalue themselves, whereas younger people tend to devalue themselves but not to refrain from seeking attention. This implies that people in different age groups use different modesty strategies. In addition, gender differences were found in AA and OE. The aim of the present study was to illuminate the causal relationships between self‐esteem and test anxiety, as well as between general self‐efficacy and test anxiety using two‐wave longitudinal research design with a sample of 252 Chinese college students. After controlling for gender, grade and autoregressive effects, the results revealed that (1) self‐esteem at T1 did not significantly predict test anxiety at T2; (2) general self‐efficacy at T1 did not significantly predict test anxiety at T2; (3) test anxiety at T1 significantly and negatively predicted self‐esteem at T2; and (4) test anxiety at T1 marginally significantly and negatively predicted general self‐efficacy at T2. These results suggest that test anxiety is more likely to affect self‐esteem and general self‐efficacy rather than vice versa, and that the causal relationship between self‐esteem and test anxiety are clearer than the causal relationship between general self‐efficacy and test anxiety. Nonsuicidal self‐injury (NSSI) is theorized to be caused by negative associations with the self, including low self‐esteem, but the mechanisms explaining why low self‐esteem is related to more severe NSSI are unclear. The current study aimed to address this limitation by evaluating a mediation model, proposing that low self‐esteem would relate to more severe NSSI through increasing self‐punishment motivations. Data came from 468 undergraduate students with a history of NSSI who completed an online survey measuring NSSI characteristics and functions, self‐esteem, and self‐punishment motivations for NSSI. Mediation was tested using a structural equation model using bootstrapped 95% percentile‐corrected confidence intervals in which NSSI severity was modeled as a latent variable composed of NSSI frequency, recency, and versatility of methods. The total model was significant and the indirect effect of self‐esteem on NSSI severity through self‐punishment motives was significant. Self‐esteem also retained significant direct effects on NSSI severity, indicating partial mediation. These results provide support for the benefits and barriers model of NSSI, suggesting that negative self‐views increase risk for more severe NSSI through self‐punishment motivations. Clinical interventions that emphasize self‐compassion and focus on modifying self‐punishment motivations may help reduce NSSI behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Improved self‐esteem and body image, as well as reduced experiences of weight stigma are important patient‐reported obesity treatment outcomes. However, more knowledge is needed about how individuals who have undergone metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) perceive themselves and their bodies and use different coping strategies in relation to body image and self‐esteem long‐term after MBS. In this qualitative study body image, self‐esteem, weight stigma and coping strategies were explored among 18 individuals who underwent MBS more than 10 years ago when interviewed. Using reflexive thematic analysis, two primary themes were identified: 'Experiences of living with a stigmatised body' and 'Coping with weight stigma, body image and self‐esteem', and eight sub‐themes. Findings capture frequent experiences of weight stigma before bariatric surgery, the need for coping with stigma and body dissatisfaction before and after MBS, and how different coping strategies are related to participants' perceptions of their bodies and self‐concepts. More adaptive coping strategies, such as confrontation and cognitive restructuring may facilitate more positive body image outcomes, than more ruminative and avoidant strategies. Understanding adaptive coping strategies can be useful to develop interventions to reduce negative consequences of weight stigma on body image and self‐esteem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined longitudinal dyadic and within‐partner associations among self‐esteem, subjective happiness, and marital conflict in married couples, with a possible moderating role of wives' employment status. Data were analyzed from the Panel Study on Korean Children, nationwide longitudinal data. The study sample included 1668 married couples (N = 3336 participants) where both partners provided separate data annually across three waves. Husbands' and wives' mean ages at T1 were 39.3 and 36.8 years, respectively. For both partners, self‐esteem and subjective happiness were related bidirectionally at an individual level. Wives' marital conflict was linked to husbands' subsequent marital conflict and vice versa. Wives played a greater role in their husbands' self‐esteem than vice versa. Findings suggest that wives tend to be their husband's substantial source of perceived psychological well‐being than the reverse; however, the benefit of psychological well‐being is likely to be lower for husbands of stay‐at‐home wives. Introduction: Low self‐esteem is a frequent symptom in major depressive disorder (MDD). This functional magnetic resonance imaging study investigated whether MDD patients with low self‐esteem show a distinct neural pathophysiology. Previous studies linked low self‐esteem to reduced task‐induced deactivation of the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex (pgACC) as a part of the default mode network, and to reduced connectivity between pgACC and reward system. Goya‐Maldonado et al. identified an MDD subtype with pgACC and ventral striatal overactivations during reward processing. We hypothesized that this subtype might be characterized by low self‐esteem. Methods: Eighty‐three MDD patients performed the desire–reason dilemma task and completed the Rosenberg Self‐Esteem Scale (RSES). Brain activity during bottom‐up reward processing was regressed upon the RSES scores, controlling for depression severity measured by the Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale. To corroborate the findings, we compared self‐esteem scores between patient subgroups with impaired task‐induced deactivation (n = 31) and with preserved task‐induced deactivation (n = 31) of the pgACC. Results: Consistent with our a priori hypothesis, activity in a bilateral fronto‐striatal network including pgACC and ventral striatum correlated negatively with RSES scores, also when controlling for depression severity. In the additional analysis, patients with impaired task‐induced pgACC deactivation showed lower self‐esteem (t (52.82) = −2.27; p =.027, d = 0.58) compared to those with preserved task‐induced pgACC deactivation. Conclusions: We conclude that low self‐esteem in MDD patients is linked to a task‐induced deactivation dysfunction of the pgACC. Our findings suggest that a previously described possible subtype of MDD with pgACC and ventral striatal overactivations during reward processing is clinically characterized by low self‐esteem. Aim: This study aims to investigate the relationship between nurses' self‐efficacy and self‐esteem, and their job satisfaction. Design: A cross‐sectional study was conducted. Methods: Employing a random sampling method that included 234 nurses from three hospitals in Iran enrolled. This study utilized the General Self‐Efficacy Questionnaire, Coppersmith Self‐Esteem Inventory, and Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire. Descriptive analysis, independent t‐tests, Pearson correlation analyses, and linear regression were employed for data analysis. Results: The mean self‐efficacy score for nurses was 26.73 ± 5.62 (out of 40), while self‐esteem and job satisfaction scored 37.13 ± 6.87 (out of 50) and 68.27 ± 12.65 (out of 100), respectively. Significant correlations were found between self‐efficacy, self‐esteem, and job satisfaction. Moreover, self‐esteem and the age group >40 years were identified as important predictors of nurses' job satisfaction. Data were collected between January 16, 2023, and February 15, 2023, with the Demographic Data Collection Tool, Coopersmith Self‐Esteem Inventory, and the Attitude Scale for Nursing Profession. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 27.0 program. The STROBE checklist was used to report the study.The mean age of the participants was 20.79 ± 1.72 (years), among which 65.3% were in the 20–22 age range, 76.7% were female, and 29.7% were in the first grade. A positive but very weak relationship was found between the Coopersmith Self‐Esteem Inventory and the Attitude Scale for Nursing Profession scores (p < 0.05).The results show that professionalization and socialization processes greatly affect nursing students’ self‐esteem. Considering the extended period that students spend in academic institutions under the guidance of faculty members, this matter deserves greater attention.While developing the curriculum and education process, factors that support the development of self‐esteem in nursing students should be taken into account and initiatives should be planned to increase positive attitudes toward the profession. Grade retention is one of the most discussed and controversial educational measures, and yet, it is still widely applied in many countries. Research investigating the effects of grade retention on students' psychosocial variables presents mixed findings, partly due to the variables assessed, methodological issues, and the length of the studies. This study aimed to analyse both the short to medium and longitudinal effects of grade retention in grades 7 or 8 on Portuguese students' academic self‐concept, self‐esteem, goal orientations, and school career. Data were collected continuously over a 3‐year span (once a year) and, again, 3 years after the third wave. After matching 477 students on several pretreatment variables using inverse probability treatment weighting with time‐varying treatments (i.e., retention), our analytical sample consisted of 85 promoted students, 33 students retained in grade 7, and 32 students retained in grade 8. Our results showed that retained students did not differ from their promoted peers in self‐esteem and goal orientations in the short, medium, or long term. The exception was for an increase in the academic self‐concept of retained students, but only in short term. Finally, considering students' school career, grade retention was not predictive of further retention. Practitioner points: Retained students exhibited lower levels of academic self‐concept, self‐esteem, and goal orientations even before retention.The potential advantages of grade retention, particularly in terms of academic self‐concept, tend to vanish in the long run.Grade retention in lower secondary education did not predict retention in secondary education. Previous research suggests that nonsuicidal self‐injury (NSSI; the intentional destruction of bodily tissue without suicidal intent) occurs among elementary‐aged children. However, it remains unclear to what extent elementary school educators encounter NSSI among students and how they respond. Therefore, this study investigated cross‐national differences in Canadian and Belgian elementary school educators' knowledge of, and experience with NSSI among students. More specifically, elementary school educators' perceived reasons and supportive needs of students who engage in NSSI, as well as their own professional development needs, were explored. In total, 181 elementary school educators across Canada (n = 63) and Belgium (n = 118) were recruited through teacher association listservs and by school administrators who distributed the study information to school staff. Chi‐square tests revealed that Canadian elementary school educators had more often encountered NSSI among their students than Belgian educators, although Canadian and Belgian school educators' similarly reported feeling ill‐equipped to deal with NSSI among students. Thematic analyses revealed that educators believe elementary‐aged students engage in NSSI because of various intrapersonal (e.g., low self‐esteem) and interpersonal stressors (e.g., bullying). Moreover, the majority of educators would like professional development to more effectively respond to students. Implications for schools and future research are discussed. Background: Only about 9% of individuals with intellectual disabilities reach the government's physical activity (PA) recommendations. Combining gamification and technology seems particularly promising in overcoming personal and environmental barriers to PA participation. Method: Eighteen adults with varying levels of intellectual disabilities completed a pilot study to assess the initial effects of a cycling gamification intervention on levels of PA, fitness, psychosocial outcomes, and challenging behaviours. The study comprised three designs: pre‐post single group, AB single‐case, and qualitative. Social validity, implementation barriers and facilitators were also explored. Results: Nearly all 18 participants cycled daily. Time and distance cycled daily increase during the intervention while a decrease in stereotyped behaviours was observed. Participants and staff found the intervention enjoyable and socially valid. Conclusions: Results of the multiple‐design study suggest that gamification interventions may be a suitable, enjoyable, and promising way to contribute to PA participation of adults with intellectual disabilities.
