The article discusses each step of a rapid thermal cycling process and provides quantitative guidance for tooling design. Solid freeform fabrication processes provide the manufacturing flexibility for tools with low thermal inertia and internal conformal channels used for thermal cycling in injection molding. A three-dimensional printed benchmark tool with truss support was used to test the design methodology. The mold time constant and the cavity temperature uniformity were established by a rapid cooling test on the benchmark tool.
