Varicocele is among the most common problems which may lead to male infertility. Spermatogenesis is impaired as a consequence of this vascular defect, through mechanisms that are not well described. This study aimed to evaluate serum hormonal level (inhibin B, FSH and testosterone) and seminal plasma antioxidant defence levels after folic acid and zinc sulphate administration in varicocelectomised patients. Participants were randomly allocated to four experimental groups. Our randomisation schedule was as follows: zinc sulphate/folic acid, folic acid, zinc sulphate and placebo. The patients underwent varicocelectomy, before which a blood and semen sample were obtained and also three and six months after varicocelectomy for evaluation of blood hormonal level (FSH, testosterone, inhibin B) and seminal oxidative stress status (nitric oxide, superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity). Patients in different groups took orally one capsule per day after dinner following varicocelectomy for 6 months. A significant rise in peripheral blood inhibin B and seminal plasma activity was detected in the zinc sulphate/folic acid group after 6 months. The present clinical trial indicates a change in the hormonal status of varicocelectomised patients following long-term administration of zinc sulphate and folic acid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Periodontitis and oral cancers are the most common oral diseases in the human population. The early diagnosis of oral diseases allows the efficient therapy of the patient. During oral diseases, resident cells in the affected tissue secrete exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) into saliva. As these miRNAs have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of oral diseases, they have been suggested as non-invasive and validated biomarkers in predicting periodontitis severity and cancer progression. Several attempts have been performed to evaluate the expression of salivary exosomal miRNAs in patients with periodontitis and oral cancers. Some miRNAs are differentially expressed in the saliva of the affected patients when compared to healthy individuals. These miRNAs are reviewed in this narrative review. Collectively, it seems that salivary exosomal microRNAs could be used as a diagnostic biomarker in oral diseases. Bacillus thermocatenulatus lipase 2 (BTL2), a thermoalkalophilic lipase, is the best studied enzyme for its particular properties, which make it useful in different industries. Displacement of conserved phenylalanine 17 (Phe-17) residue in the active site of BTL2 has a critical role in oxyanion hole formation, which is important for enzyme activity. In this study, to facilitate oxyanion hole formation, Phe-17 was substituted with Alanine residue (F17A). The best structures of the opened form of the native and mutated lipases were garnered based on the crystal structures of 2W22. To evaluate catalytic activity, both lipases were docked to a set of ligands using Hex 6.3 software. Following in silico study, both native and mutant btl2 genes were cloned and expressed in Pichia pastoris. Based on the results obtained, the mutation increased lipase lipolytic activity against most of the applied substrates, especially for tributyrin and tricaprylin, by 1.9 and 2.15 fold, respectively. However, optimum temperature and pH were the same for both lipases (60 °C and pH 8.0). As previously reported, it is believed that F17A mutation simplifies oxyanion hole formation and declines steric hindrance in the enzyme active site, which might ultimately lead to more efficient accessibility of substrates., (© 2013 International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.)

In the polymeric title compound, [Ca(C(7)H(3)NO(4))(H(2)O)(C(2)H(6)OS)](n), the Ca(II) ion is coordinated in a distorted penta-gonal-bipyramidal CdNO(6) geometry. The crystal packing is stabilized by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking inter-actions between the aromatic rings of pyridine-2,5-dicarb-oxy-late with centroid-centroid distances of 3.6166 (13) Å.
