Climate change will affect species persistence and distribution, particularly in high‐diversity ecosystems like the Amazon. Studies predict that as temperature and deforestation increase and precipitation patterns change in the Amazon, areas along its southern and eastern borders will suffer large‐scale savannization, the conversion of tropical forest to degraded savannah‐like vegetation. Here, we aim to identify the terrestrial mammal species potentially most at risk from savannization by studying their use of natural forest and savannah habitats within four protected areas, using camera‐trap surveys and community occupancy models. We grouped species into categories according to the overlap of their global distributions with the Amazon and Cerrado biome (Amazon, Cerrado and generalist species) and investigated the effect on their space use of savannah cover within a 100‐m buffer, and of the immediate habitat type (continuous forest, riparian forest and savannah) at the camera trap. Both savannah cover and savannah habitat type affected space use of most Amazon and generalist species strongly negatively. Only Cerrado species ever showed strong positive responses to savannah cover. These results suggest that most of the terrestrial mammal community is potentially vulnerable to savannization, including several species typically considered habitat generalists. Negative effects of disturbed savannah‐like habitats are likely even stronger than effects of natural savannah reported here. Although less favorable than continuous forest, riparian forest had a strong negative effect for only a small fraction of species, indicating that effects of savannization may be buffered to some extent by riparian forests. Our results suggest that climate change‐induced vegetation changes may reduce the ability of protected areas in the southern Brazilian Amazon to safeguard populations of terrestrial mammals and should be considered when assessing potential climate‐change effects on these species. Summary: Mitochondrial DNA sequences are frequently transferred into the nuclear genome, generating nuclear mitochondrial DNA sequences (NUMTs). Here, we analysed, for the first time, NUMTs in the ovine genome. We obtained 760 alignment matches covering 513.8 kbp of the sheep nuclear genome. After a merging step, we identified 390 NUMT regions with a total length of ~720 kbp, representing 0.02% of the nuclear genome. We discovered copies of all mitochondrial regions and found that most NUMT regions are intergenic or intronic. Ovine NUMTs are mostly not transcribed. However, we identified within some of the NUMTs, potential new genes encoding nuclear humanin isoforms. To rule out the possibility that the identified NUMTs could be artifacts of the OarRambouilletv1.0 genome assembly, we validated experimentally nine NUMT regions by PCR amplification. As we found several NUMT regions showing high similarity to the mitochondrial genome that potentially could pose a risk to ovine DNA mitochondrial studies, special care must be taken for the selection of primers for PCR amplification of mitochondrial DNA sequences. Species of the genus Thismia Griff. are small herbs, considered mycoheterotrophic due to an intimate relationship with fungi. They are achlorophyllous, with complex floral structure but little information on reproductive strategies. This study evaluated structural and ecological aspects associated with the dispersal of seeds of Thismia panamensis (Standley) Jonk.The study was carried out in a forest fragment in the Brazilian Cerrado. During the reproductive period, 36 individuals were monitored for spatial distribution of the population and their fruits were collected. Samples were subjected to light microscopy and microtomography techniques, in addition to an experiment to evaluate seed dispersal by water droplets.Thismia panamensis is up to 8‐cm tall, with a tuberous root and stem, without leaves. Its fruit is dehiscent, cup‐shaped, 5 ± 1 mm in diameter, containing 219.33 ± 106.70 seeds, with an average length of 0.55 ± 0.07 mm. The seeds are exposed, and their coat has a thin and lignified wall. Accumulation of secretions was observed inside the fruits. The innermost cell layer of the ovary showed typical characteristics of aquiferous parenchyma. Water splash experiments showed that the seeds reached an average distance of 44.04 ± 26.58 cm. Each splash contained, on average, 1.50 ± 1.23 seeds, with 75% of the splashes containing a single seed. A total of 239 seeds were counted in the 163 splashes evaluated.The data show potential seed dispersal by ombrohydrochory in T. panamensis, favouring its maintenance in the study area and reflecting its clumped spatial distribution. Summary: Limousin, a renowned beef breed originating from central France, has been selectively bred over the last 100 years to improve economically important traits. We used whole‐genome sequencing data from 10 unrelated Limousin bull calves to detect polymorphisms and identify regions under selection. A total of 13 943 766 variants were identified. Moreover, 311 852 bi‐allelic SNPs and 92 229 indels located on autosomes were fixed for the alternative allele in all sequenced animals, including the previously reported missense deleterious F94L mutation in MSTN. We performed a whole‐genome screen to discover genomic regions with excess homozygosity, using the pooled heterozygosity score and identified 171 different candidate selective sweeps. In total, 68 candidate genes were found in only 57 of these regions, indicating that a large fraction of the genome under selection might lie in non‐coding regions and suggesting that a majority of adaptive mutations might be regulatory in nature. Many QTL were found within candidate selective sweep regions, including QTL associated with shear force or carcass weight. Among the putative selective sweeps, we located genes (MSTN, NCKAP5, RUNX2) that potentially contribute to important phenotypes in Limousin. Several candidate regions and genes under selection were also found in previous genome‐wide selection scans performed in Limousin. In addition, we were able to pinpoint candidate causative regulatory polymorphisms in GRIK3 and RUNX2 that might have been under selection. Our results will contribute to improved understanding of the mechanisms and targets of artificial selection and will facilitate the interpretation of GWASs performed in Limousin. The partial or complete loss of chlorophylls, or albinism, is a rare phenomenon in plants. In the present study, we provide the first report of the occurrence in albino Delonix regia seedlings and describe the morpho-physiological changes associated with albinism. • Wild-type (WT) and albino seedlings were characterized. Leaflets samples were processed following common procedures for analysis with light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters and the carbohydrate, lipid and soluble protein content were also determined in leaf and cotyledon samples of both albino and WT seedlings. • Albino seedlings showed reduced growth. They also had lower chlorophyll and protein content in foliar tissues than WT seedlings, in addition to lower concentrations of lipids and carbohydrates stored in cotyledons. The chloroplasts of albino seedlings were poorly developed, with an undefined internal membrane system and the presence of plastoglobules. Wild-type seedlings had a uniseriate and hypoestomatic epidermis. The mesophyll was dorsiventral, consisting of a layer of palisade parenchyma and two to four layers of spongy parenchyma. In albino seedlings, the spongy parenchyma was compact, with few intercellular spaces, and the thickness of the mesophyll was larger, resulting in increased thickness of the leaf blade. Albino seedlings had higher stomatal density and number of pavement cells, although the stomata had smaller dimensions. • In addition to the partial loss of chlorophylls, albino D. regia showed changes at physiological and structural levels, demonstrating the crucial nature of photosynthetic pigments during the development and differentiation of plant leaf tissues/cells. Aim: This prospective clinical study evaluated the incidence of instrument fracture observed after single‐file root canal treatment of molars using WaveOne Gold instruments. Methodology: Three standardized, experienced and calibrated specialists treated 750 maxillary and mandibular molars with curvatures less than 45° (2691 root canals) over a 12‐month period. All the treatments were performed in a single session. A total of 1104 WaveOne Gold instruments were used, including 38 small, 750 primary, 228 medium and 88 large instruments. Intracanal procedures were performed according to the manufacturer's recommendations, and each instrument was used in a single clinical case. The instruments were examined after their removal from the canal, under an operating microscope at 8× magnification. Results: No fractures were observed in any of the 1104 instruments used. Conclusions: No fractures of WaveOne Gold reciprocating instruments occurred during root canal preparations performed in maxillary and mandibular molars with curvatures less than 45° when used strictly according to the manufacturer's recommendations and applied in a single clinical case. Abstract: Animal activity patterns correspond to the individual diel cycle time and is an important attribute of species coexistence in ecological communities. However, activity patterns of most Neotropical species are still poorly understood. Based on an 8‐year camera‐trapping survey conducted between 2009 and 2017, we evaluated puma (Puma concolor) activity patterns in a human‐modified landscape in Southeastern Brazil. Our objectives were to determine the activity pattern of pumas and to verify the influence of main prey species and anthropogenic factors on their behavior. We categorized activity patterns of all assessed species based on the proportion of independent records during night and day times. We tested for sex differences in activity patterns of pumas, and measured their overlap with most consumed prey, people, cattle and domestic dogs. Our results suggested that males engaged in mostly nocturnal behavior while females were active both at night and day hours. Pumas exhibited higher coefficient of overlapping with prey species that were most often included in their diet, suggesting that prey availability might influence puma activity or that pumas opportunistically prey upon species with similar activity pattern. Female pumas seem to be more exposed to anthropogenic threats due to higher activity pattern overlap with people and domestic dogs. Our findings provide insights into puma‐prey temporal behavior, highlighting the relevance of intrasexual dissimilarity in the activity patterns of a top predator living in a disturbed landscape. Changes in physiological parameters that are induced by acute exercise on a treadmill in healthy military dogs have not been thoroughly investigated, especially with regard to age. This study investigated the effects of acute exercise on a treadmill on cardiovascular function, biochemical parameters and gastric antral motility in military dogs. Thermography was used to assess variations in superficial hindlimb muscle temperature. Nine healthy dogs were distributed into three groups according to their age (Group I: 25 ± 7 months; Group II: 51 ± 12 months; Group III: 95 ± 10 months) and sequentially subjected to running exercise on a treadmill for 12 min (3.2 km/h at 0° incline for 4 min, 6.4 km/h at 0° incline for 4 min and 6.4 km/h at 10° incline for 4 min). Heart rate, systolic and diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), gastric motility, haematocrit and biochemical analyses were performed at rest and after each session of treadmill exercise. Infrared thermographic images of muscles in the pelvic member were taken. Exercise decreased DAP in Group I, increased systolic arterial pressure in Groups II and III and increased mean arterial pressure in Group III (all p < 0.05). After the exercise protocol, plasma creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase levels increased only in Group I (p < 0.05). Exercise increased heart rate and decreased the gastric motility of a solid meal at 180 min in all groups (all p < 0.05). Exercise also elevated temperature in the femoral biceps muscles in Group I compared with the older dogs. The results indicate that acute exercise decreased gastric motility in dogs, regardless of age, and caused more pronounced cardiovascular changes in older dogs than in younger dogs. Abstract: Laterally bent dorsal fins are rarely observed in free‐ranging populations of cetaceans, contrary to captivity, where most killer whale Orcinus orca adult males have laterally collapsed fins. This topic has been poorly explored, and data/information on its occurrence and possible causes are limited. The present study: (i) undertakes a review of the available information on bent dorsal fins in free‐ranging cetaceans, and updates it with new records, (ii) reports on the proportion of bent fins in different study populations, and (iii) discusses possible causes. An empirical approach based on bibliographic research and compilation of 52 new records collected worldwide resulted in a total of 17 species of cetaceans displaying bent dorsal fins. The species with the highest number of records (64%) and from most locations was O. orca. On average, individuals with bent dorsal fins represent < 1% of their populations, with the exception of false killer whales Pseudorca crassidens and O. orca. While line injuries associated with fisheries interactions may be the main cause for P. crassidens, and the vulnerability to health issues caused by the evolutionary enlargement of the fin may be the cause for O. orca adult males, factors contributing to this abnormality for other species are still unclear. The occurrence of bent dorsals could be influenced by a set of variables rather than by a single factor but, irrespective of the cause, it is suggested that it does not directly affect the animals' survivorship. While still rare in nature, this incident is more common (at least 101 known cases) and widespread (geographically and in species diversity) than hypothesized, and is not confined only to animals in captive environments. Renal fibrosis is characterized by glomerulosclerosis and tubulointerstitial fibrosis and its pathogenesis is associated with the activity of mesenchymal cells (fibroblasts), being essentially characterized by a process of excessive accumulation resulting from the deposition of extracellular matrix components. The aim of this study was to characterize the morphological presentation of chronic and fibrotic lesions in the glomerular, tubular, interstitial, and vascular compartments in feline CKD, as well as the possible participation of myofibroblasts in renal fibrotic processes in this species. Cat kidneys were collected and processed according to the conventional techniques for light microscopy, circular polarization, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. Fibrotic alterations were present in all compartments analyzed. The main findings in the glomerular compartment were different degrees of glomerular sclerosis, synechia formation, Bowman's capsule calcification, in addition to glomerular basement membrane thickening and pericapsular fibrosis. The tubulointerstitial compartment had intense tubular degeneration and the immunostaining in tubular cells for mesenchymal cell markers demonstrated the possibility of mesenchymal epithelial transition and consequent involvement of myofibroblasts in the development of interstitial tubule damage. Infiltration of inflammatory cells, added to vessel thickening and fibrosis, demonstrated the severity and role of inflammation in the development and perpetuation of damage. Thus, we may conclude that fibrotic lesions play a relevant role in feline CKD and the mechanism of perpetuation of these lesions need further elucidation regarding the origin and participation of myofibroblasts and consequent mesenchymal epithelial transition in this species. Surveying and monitoring of elusive animals with naturally low densities and large home ranges, such as many medium- and large-sized mammals, is challenging. Low capture rates can preclude detailed analyses. The use of bait has been used as a strategy to increase carnivore capture rates in many camera-trap surveys. Here, we test the effect of one carnivore bait type (mix of fresh sardine and egg) on the capture rates of carnivores and prey species in a camera-trap survey in the Central Brazilian Amazon. We also test if the quality of records of naturally marked felids for individual identification is enhanced by the use of bait. We found that the bait had no apparent effect on the carnivore capture rates, but it might have repelled some prey species. The number of suitable photos for individual identification of naturally marked felids was greater at baited stations than at unbaited stations, but this did not result in practical advantages for individual identification. We recommend that the use of carnivore bait should be carefully considered at the planning stage of camera-trap studies as it can negatively affect recording of prey species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The androgynophore column, a distinctive floral feature in passion flowers, is strongly crooked or bent in many Passiflora species pollinated by bats. This is a floral feature that facilitates the adaptation to bat pollination. Crooking or bending of plant organs are generally caused by environmental stimulus ( e.g. mechanical barriers) and might involve the differential distribution of auxin. Our aim was to study the role of the perianth organs and the effect of auxin in bending of the androgynophore of the bat-pollinated species Passiflora mucronata. Morpho-anatomical characterisation of the androgynophore, including measurements of curvature angles and cell sizes both at the dorsal (convex) and ventral (concave) sides of the androgynophore, was performed on control flowers, flowers from which perianth organs were partially removed and flowers treated either with auxin (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid; 2,4-D) or with an inhibitor of auxin polar transport (naphthylphthalamic acid; NPA). Asymmetric growth of the androgynophore column, leading to bending, occurs at a late stage of flower development. Removing the physical constraint exerted by perianth organs or treatment with NPA significantly reduced androgynophore bending. Additionally, the androgynophores of plants treated with 2,4-D were more curved when compared to controls. There was a larger cellular expansion at the dorsal side of the androgynophores of plants treated with 2,4-D and in both sides of the androgynophores of plants treated with NPA. This study suggests that the physical constraint exerted by perianth and auxin redistribution promotes androgynophore bending in P. mucronata and might be related to the evolution of chiropterophily in the genus Passiflora. Identifying the action of natural selection from patterns of standing genetic variation has long been of interest to the population genetic community. Thanks to the availability of large single-nucleotide polymorphism ( SNP) data sets for many species and of high-throughput SNP genotyping methods, whole-genomic surveys to detect selective sweeps are now possible. Knowing the ancestral allele increases the power to detect selection. We present here a comparative genomic approach to determine the putative ancestral allele of bovine SNPs deposited in public databases. We analysed 19 551 488 SNPs and identified the putative ancestral allele for 14 339 107 SNPs. Our predicted ancestral alleles were in agreement with ancestral alleles detected by genotyping outgroup species for 97% SNPs from the BovineSNP50 Bead Chip. Identifying recent positive selection signatures in domesticated animals could provide information on genome response to strong directional selection from domestication and artificial selection and therefore could help in identifying mutations responsible for improved traits. We used genotyping data generated using Illumina's Bovine SNP50 Genotyping BeadChips to identify selection signatures in the Blonde d'Aquitaine breed, a well-muscled French beef breed. For this purpose, we employed a hidden Markov model-based test, which detects selection by studying local variations in the allele frequency spectrum along the genome, within a single population. Three regions containing selective sweeps were identified. Annotation of genes located within these regions revealed interesting candidate genes. For example, myostatin (also known as GDF8), a known muscle growth factor inhibitor, is located within the selection signature region found on chromosome 2. In addition, we have identified chromosomal regions that show some evidence of selection within QTL regions for economically important traits. We present here the first genome-wide characterization of linkage disequilibrium ( LD) in the French Blonde d' Aquitaine ( BLA) breed, a well-muscled breed renowned for producing high-yielding beef carcasses. To assess the pattern and extent of LD, we used a sample of 30 unrelated bulls and 36 923 single nucleotide polymorphisms ( SNPs) covering all cattle autosomes. The squared correlation of the alleles at two loci ( r2) was used as a measure of LD. The analysis of adjacent marker pairs revealed that the level of LD decreases rapidly with physical distance between SNPs. Overall mean r 2 was 0.205 (±0.262). Strong LD ( r2 > 0.8) and useful LD (measured as r2 > 0.2) were observed within genomic regions of up to 720 and 724 kb, respectively. We analysed the genetic structure of the BLA population and found stratification. The observed genetic sub-structuring is consistent with the known recent demographic history that occurred during BLA breed formation. Our results indicate that LD mapping of phenotypic traits in the BLA population is feasible; however, because of this sub-structuring, special care is needed to reduce the likelihood of false-positive associations between marker loci and traits of interest. Bioinformatics and re-sequencing approaches were used for the discovery of sequence polymorphisms in Litopenaeus vannamei. A total of 1221 putative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in a pool of individuals from various commercial populations. A set of 211 SNPs were selected for further molecular validation and 88% showed variation in 637 samples representing three commercial breeding lines. An association analysis was performed between these markers and several traits of economic importance for shrimp producers including resistance to three major viral diseases. A small number of SNPs showed associations with test weekly gain, grow-out survival and resistance to Taura Syndrome Virus. Very low levels of linkage disequilibrium were revealed between most SNP pairs, with only 11% of SNPs showing an r2-value above 0.10 with at least one other SNP. Comparison of allele frequencies showed small changes over three generations of the breeding programme in one of the commercial breeding populations. This unique SNP resource has the potential to catalyse future studies of genetic dissection of complex traits, tracing relationships in breeding programmes, and monitoring genetic diversity in commercial and wild populations of L. vannamei. This study assessed expression of 12 genes in 24 pig longissimus samples earlier subjected to a proteomic study by our group. Genes were selected on the basis of the earlier proteomic results. Pigs differed in rearing environment (indoors or outdoors), sire breed (Duroc or Large White) and gender (female or castrated male). At slaughter they experienced different stress conditions. The proportion of gene expression changes influenced by treatment factors was consistent with the proportion of protein changes in an earlier proteomic analysis of the same pigs. Expression levels of genes were often correlated. Gene expression was generally not correlated with the levels of the corresponding protein. Finally, most meat quality traits were correlated with the expression of at least one of the studied genes. The most meaningful of these was the association of a slower pH decline with lower levels of HSP72 expression and higher levels of HSP72 protein. ANXA2 and cMDH expression were also associated with various meat quality traits. These relationships may be related to pre-slaughter stress levels and fibre type composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: We recently showed, using a candidate gene approach in a case-control association study, that a 65-kb block encompassing tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 1 (TRAF1) and C5 is strongly associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Compared with case-control association studies, family-based studies have the added advantage of controlling potential differences in population structure and are not likely to be hampered by variation in population allele frequencies, as is seen for many genetic polymorphisms, including the TRAF1/C5 locus. The aim of this study was to confirm this association in populations of European origin by using a family-based approach. METHODS: A total of 1,356 western European white individuals from 452 'trio' families were genotyped for the rs10818488 polymorphism, using the TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. RESULTS: We observed evidence for association, demonstrating departure from Mendel's law, with an overtransmission of the rs10818488 A allele (A = 55%; P = 0.036). By taking into consideration parental phenotypes, we also observed an increased A allele frequency in affected versus unaffected parents (A = 64%; combined P = 0.015). Individuals carrying the A allele had a 1.2-fold increased risk of developing RA (allelic odds ratio 1.24, 95% confidence interval 1.04-1.50). CONCLUSION: Using a family-based study that is robust against population stratification, we provide evidence for the association of the TRAF1/C5 rs10818488 A allele and RA in populations of European descent, further substantiating our previous findings. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of Metformin and Glyburide on cardiovascular, metabolic and hormonal parameters during progressive exercise performed to exhaustion in the post-prandial state in women with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Design and Methods: Ten T2DM patients treated with Metformin (M group), 10 with Glyburide (G group) and 10 age-paired healthy subjects exercised on a bicycle ergometer up to exercise peak. Cardiovascular and blood metabolic and hormonal parameters were measured at times -60 min, 0 min, exercise end, and at 10 and 20 minutes of recovery phase. Thirty minutes before the exercise, a standard breakfast was provided to all participants. The diabetic patients took Metformin or Glyburide before or with meal. Results: Peak oxygen uptake (VO2) was lower in patients with diabetes. Plasma glucose levels remained unchanged, but were higher in both diabetic groups. Patients with diabetes also presented lower insulin levels after meals and higher glucagon levels at exercise peak than C group. Serum cortisol levels were higher in G than M group at exercise end and recovery phase. Lactate levels were higher in M than G group at fasting and in C group at exercise peak. Nor epinephrine, GH and FFA responses were similar in all 3 groups. Conclusion: Progressive exercise performed to exhaustion, in the post-prandial state did not worsen glucose control during and after exercise. The administration of the usual dose of Glyburide or Metformin to T2DM patients did not influence the cardiovascular, metabolic and hormonal response to exercise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) is a neuropeptide with diverse biological actions. Type I PACAP receptors (PACAPR) are specific for PACAP, whereas type II and III PACAPRs are less restricted. To localize and analyse the variation of this gene, a 559-bp long intronic fragment of the porcine PACAPR gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction and sequenced in samples from five different pig breeds. One single nucleotide polymorphism was identified and its allele frequency was determined in all five breeds. Linkage analysis in a Berkshire × Yorkshire reference family placed the PACAPR gene on chromosome 18, between SW787 and S0062 ( SW787– 8.1 cM – PACAPR– 3.0 cM – S0062). Gene-to-gene variation in the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) has been observed in humans, mice, rats, primates and pigs, but a relationship across species in this variation has not been described. Here, the frequency of porcine coding SNPs (cSNPs) identified by in silico methods, and the frequency of murine cSNPs, were compared with the frequency of human cSNPs across homologous genes. From 150 000 porcine expressed sequence tag (EST) sequences, a total of 452 SNP-containing sequence clusters were found, totalling 1394 putative SNPs. Human and murine cSNPs were identified from dbSNP and were characterized as either validated or total number of cSNPs (validated plus non-validated) for comparison purposes. The correlation between in silico pig cSNP and validated human cSNP densities was found to be 0.77 (p < 0.00001) for a set of 25 homologous genes, while a correlation of 0.48 (p < 0.0005) was found for a primarily random sample of 50 homologous human and mouse genes. This is the first evidence of conserved gene-to-gene variability in cSNP frequency across species and indicates that site-directed screening of porcine genes that are homologous to cSNP-rich human genes may rapidly advance cSNP discovery in pigs. More than 5500 pig single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were recently identified and deposited in the public domain. To test the usefulness of these public SNPs, 109 SNPs were analysed for polymorphism within six commercial pig populations. A functional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was obtained for 103 SNPs and it was possible to validate c. 59% by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Furthermore, polymorphism was found using a relatively limited number of genomic DNA samples, indicating that these polymorphisms are segregating at a useful frequency in these populations. The high percentage of validated markers demonstrates the utility of these public pig SNPs to identify loci responsible for economically important traits in commercial pig populations. Abstract A new species of the genus Linshcosteus Distant, 1904 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) is described from specimens collected near Kalakkadu, Tamil Nadu state, southern India. Specimens were found in deep crevices between rocks, in a region of semi-arid scrub jungle. The distinctiveness of the new species was demonstrated by a morphometric analysis including the five previously described species of Linshcosteus , all from India. Nine measurements of the head were used in an isometric size-free principal component analysis. In terms of discrete morphology the new species, Linshcosteus karupus sp.n. Galvão, Patterson, Rocha & Jurberg differs from the most similar one, L. kali Lent & Wygodzinsky, 1979, by its very prominent anterolateral projections of the pronotum, by the length to width ratio of the pronotum, by the pilosity of the head and several other characters, including phallic structures. The article discusses a study which compares the gene map of pig chromosome 6q11-21 and human 19q13. As predicted, the gene order of the samples would be PRKD2-FUT2-SULT2A1-HIF3A-GIPR-MAP3K10-CYP2A6- HNRPUL1-SUPTH5. It concludes that the gene order for pig 6q11-21 and human 19q13 regions were collinear but in opposite direction and with rearrangements into three main segments (S1, S2 and S3). The group-specific component (GC) system is of interest in anthropological genetic studies because the distribution of its subtypes distinguishes among major ethnic groups. The GC system was analyzed in Curiaú and Pacoval, two remnant Quilombo populations (African-derived populations) from the Brazilian Amazon. There was no significant statistical difference in allelic frequencies between the two populations or between them and three other African-derived Brazilian populations (Mimbó, Sítio Velho, and Gaucinha in Northeastern Brazil). These populations share similarities among themselves and with African populations (high frequencies of GC*1F and lower frequencies of GC*1S), which may reflect the influence of a high level of African contribution to their formation, but there is a clear difference between them and Europeans and South American Indians. It is suggested that the GC system is a useful marker for studying relationships between single populations and major ethnic groups, but does not discriminate between populations which share the same parental stock., (Copyright 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)
