The aim of the study was to investigate responses to dementia‐relevant words in healthy older people and to investigate changes in response over 20‐months in people with early‐stage dementia. An emotional Stroop task, using colour‐naming dementia‐relevant words, was used as an indicator of implicit awareness of dementia. Overall, 24 people with dementia and 24 healthy older people completed an emotional Stroop task (T1). People with dementia completed the same task again after 12 (T2) and 20 (T3) months. For people with dementia emotional Stroop performance was contrasted with ratings of explicit awareness based on a detailed interview at T1 and at T2. For healthy older people and people with dementia response times to dementia‐relevant words were significantly longer than those for neutral words. The effect was absent for people with dementia at T3. This decline in the emotional Stroop effect was not associated with cognitive decline as measured by the MMSE. Ratings of explicit awareness showed no significant change over time. There was no association between explicit awareness and implicit awareness. Implicit awareness of the condition is evident in early‐stage dementia and can be elicited even where there is reduced explicit awareness. The emotional Stroop effect for dementia‐relevant words in people with dementia appears to decline over time, independently of changes in MMSE score, suggesting that implicit awareness fades as time progresses. We use a mix of qualitative and quantitative analyses to examine 1354 survey responses from members of the American Anthropological Association about their practice and teaching of cultural anthropology research methods. Latent profile analysis and an examination of responses to open‐ended survey questions reveal distinctive methodological clustering among anthropologists. However, two historical approaches to ethnography remain prominent: deep hanging out and a mixed methods toolkit, with the former remaining central to the practice and teaching of all forms of contemporary cultural anthropology. Further, many anthropologists are committed to advancing research methods that account for power imbalances in fieldwork, such as through community‐based and participatory approaches. And a substantial number also teach a wider array of methods and techniques that open new career pathways for anthropologists. Overall, our study reveals a core set of ethnographic practices—loosely, participant‐observation, informal interviews, and the experiential immersion of the ethnographer—while also highlighting the great breadth of cultural anthropological research practice and pedagogy. The findings presented here can help inform how current and future anthropological practitioners and educators position themselves to meet the ever‐changing demands of community members, funders, clients, collaborators, and students. Infection by certain pathogens is associated with cancer development. We conducted a case‐cohort study of ~2500 incident cases of esophageal, gastric and duodenal cancer, and gastric and duodenal ulcer and a randomly selected subcohort of ~2000 individuals within the China Kadoorie Biobank study of >0.5 million adults. We used a bead‐based multiplex serology assay to measure antibodies against 19 pathogens (total 43 antigens) in baseline plasma samples. Associations between pathogens and antigen‐specific antibodies with risks of site‐specific cancers and ulcers were assessed using Cox regression fitted using the Prentice pseudo‐partial likelihood. Seroprevalence varied for different pathogens, from 0.7% for Hepatitis C virus (HCV) to 99.8% for Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) in the subcohort. Compared to participants seronegative for the corresponding pathogen, Helicobacter pylori seropositivity was associated with a higher risk of non‐cardia (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 2.73 [95% CI: 2.09–3.58]) and cardia (1.67 [1.18–2.38]) gastric cancer and duodenal ulcer (2.71 [1.79–4.08]). HCV was associated with a higher risk of duodenal cancer (6.23 [1.52–25.62]) and Hepatitis B virus was associated with higher risk of duodenal ulcer (1.46 [1.04–2.05]). There were some associations of antibodies again some herpesviruses and human papillomaviruses with risks of gastrointestinal cancers and ulcers but these should be interpreted with caution. This first study of multiple pathogens with risk of gastrointestinal cancers and ulcers demonstrated that several pathogens are associated with risks of gastrointestinal cancers and ulcers. The proportion of lung cancer in never smokers is rising, especially among Asian women, but there is no effective early detection tool. Here, we developed a polygenic risk score (PRS), which may help to identify the population with higher risk of lung cancer in never‐smoking women. We first performed a large GWAS meta‐analysis (8595 cases and 8275 controls) to systematically identify the susceptibility loci for lung cancer in never‐smoking Asian women and then generated a PRS using GWAS datasets. Furthermore, we evaluated the utility and effectiveness of PRS in an independent Chinese prospective cohort comprising 55 266 individuals. The GWAS meta‐analysis identified eight known loci and a novel locus (5q11.2) at the genome‐wide statistical significance level of P < 5 × 10−8. Based on the summary statistics of GWAS, we derived a polygenic risk score including 21 variants (PRS‐21) for lung cancer in never‐smoking women. Furthermore, PRS‐21 had a hazard ratio (HR) per SD of 1.29 (95% CI = 1.18‐1.41) in the prospective cohort. Compared with participants who had a low genetic risk, those with an intermediate (HR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.00‐1.72) and high (HR = 2.09, 95% CI: 1.56‐2.80) genetic risk had a significantly higher risk of incident lung cancer. The addition of PRS‐21 to the conventional risk model yielded a modest significant improvement in AUC (0.697 to 0.711) and net reclassification improvement (24.2%). The GWAS‐derived PRS‐21 significantly improves the risk stratification and prediction accuracy for incident lung cancer in never‐smoking Asian women, demonstrating the potential for identification of high‐risk individuals and early screening. INTRODUCTION: Impaired cognition and instrumental activities of daily living (iADL) are key diagnostic features of dementia; however, few studies have compared trajectories of cognition and iADL. METHODS: Participants from the IDEAL study comprised 1537, 1183, and 851 people with dementia, and 1277, 977, and 749 caregivers at baseline, 12 and 24 months, respectively. Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination‐III and Functional Activities Questionnaire were used to measure cognition and iADL, respectively. Scores were converted to deciles. RESULTS: Self‐rated iADL declined on average by ‐0.08 (‐0.25, 0.08) decile points per timepoint more than cognition. Informant‐rated iADL declined on average by ‐0.31 (‐0.43, ‐0.18) decile points per timepoint more than cognition. DISCUSSION: Cognition and self‐rated iADL declined at a similar rate. Informant‐rated iADL declined at a significantly greater rate than cognition. Therefore, either cognition and perceived iADL decline at different rates or informants overestimate increasing iADL difficulties compared to both cognition and self‐ratings. Objective: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is caused by both genetic and cardiometabolic risk factors. However, the magnitude of the genetic predisposition of T2D in the Chinese population remains largely unknown. Methods: This study included 93,488 participants from the China Kadoorie Biobank, and multiple polygenic risk scores (PRS) were calculated. A common cardiometabolic risk score (CRS) using smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, diet, obesity, blood pressure, and blood lipids was constructed to investigate the effects of cardiometabolic risk factors on T2D. Furthermore, an equation based on ideal PRS, CRS, and their interaction was established to explore the combined effects on T2D. Results: An ideally fitting PRS model (variance explained, R2 = 7.6%) was reached based on multiple PRS calculation methods. An additive interaction between PRS and CRS (coefficient = 28%, 95% CI: 0.20–0.36, p < 0.001) was found. The R2 of the T2D predictive model could increase to 8.3% when CRS and the interaction terms of PRS × CRS were considered. In the etiological composition of T2D, the ratio of genetic risk effect, cardiometabolic risk effect, and interaction between genetic and cardiometabolic factors was 67:16:17. Conclusions: This study identified an ideally fitting PRS model for identifying and predicting the risk of T2D suitable for the Chinese population. The quantified proportional structure of genetic risk factors, cardiometabolic risk factors, and their interaction was detected, which elucidated the critical effect of genetic factors. Regulatory T cells (Treg) are vital to the maintenance of immune homeostasis. The genetic background of an inbred mouse strain can have a profound effect on the immune response in the animal, including Treg responses. Most Treg studies focus on animals created on the C57BL/6 or BALB/c background. Recent studies have demonstrated a difference in the phenotype and behavior of C57BL/6 and BALB/c Tregs. In this study, we have investigated the function of FVB/N Tregs compared to C57BL/6 and BALB/c. We observed that while FVB/N Tregs appear to suppress normally in a cell contact‐dependent system, FVB/N Tregs are less capable of suppressing when regulation depends on the secretion of a soluble factor. FVB/N Tregs produce IL‐10; however, TGF‐β was not detected in any culture from C57BL/6 or FVB/N. C57BL/6 Foxp3+ Tregs expressed more of the TGF‐β‐related proteins glycoprotein‐A repetitions predominant (GARP) and latency‐associated peptide (LAP) on the cell surface than both FVB/N and BALB/c, but C57BL/6 Tregs expressed significantly less Ctse (Cathepsin E) mRNA. Each strain displayed different abilities of thymic Tregs (tTreg) to maintain Foxp3 expression and had a varying generation of induced Tregs (iTregs). In vitro generated FVB/N iTregs expressed significantly less GARP and LAP. These results suggest Tregs of different strains have varying phenotypes and dominant mechanisms of action for the suppression of an immune response. Wind flow and sediment transport across a northern California beach‐foredune system with two adjacent vegetation types are examined for the same incident wind conditions. The invasive Ammophila arenaria was taller (c. 1 m) with denser coverage than the neighbouring Elymus mollis alliance canopy (c. 0.65 m), which consisted of a variety of interspersed native plants. Wind flow was measured with rotating cup and sonic anemometry, while sediment transport was measured using laser particle counters. Wind speed profiles over the two canopies were significantly different because of differing vegetation height, coverage density, and stem stiffness. In both cases, there was a lower zone of semi‐stagnant air (below about 0.3 m) that transitioned upward to a shear zone comprising the upper part of the canopy and immediately above. The shear zone above the Elymus canopy was relatively thin (confined to 0.3–0.5 m above‐ground) whereas the shear zone in the Ammophila canopy was thicker extending from a height of about 0.5h (h is average plant height) to about 1.5h. Vertical profiles of Reynolds shear stress (RSS) and turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) are consistent with the shear layer structure over these two contrasting vegetation canopies. The degree of topographically‐forced and vegetation‐enhanced flow steering was significant, with Ammophila strongly shifting the highly oblique (55°) incident wind to essentially shore‐perpendicular trajectories. In comparison, the shore‐perpendicular steering effect was not as pronounced for the Elymus canopy. Sediment transport intensity on the beach was continuous, but decreased progressively to the dune toe, and then dropped to essentially zero once the vegetation canopy was encountered (on the stoss slope). Overall, the study illustrates the significant differences in wind flow and turbulence conditions that may occur in contrasting plant canopies on foredunes, suggesting that greater attention needs to be placed on vegetation roughness characteristics in models of foredune morphodynamics and sediment transport potential. Two genetic variants that alter alcohol metabolism, ALDH2‐rs671 and ADH1B‐rs1229984, can modify oesophageal cancer risk associated with alcohol consumption in East Asians, but their associations with other cancers remain uncertain. ALDH2‐rs671 G>A and ADH1B‐rs1229984 G>A were genotyped in 150 722 adults, enrolled from 10 areas in China during 2004 to 2008. After 11 years' follow‐up, 9339 individuals developed cancer. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for site‐specific cancers associated with these genotypes, and their potential interactions with alcohol consumption. Overall, the A‐allele frequency was 0.21 for ALDH2‐rs671 and 0.69 for ADH1B‐rs1229984, with A‐alleles strongly associated with lower alcohol consumption. Among men, ALDH2‐rs671 AA genotype was associated with HR of 0.69 (95% confidence interval: 0.53‐0.90) for IARC alcohol‐related cancers (n = 1900), compared to GG genotype. For ADH1B‐rs1229984, the HRs of AG and AA vs GG genotype were 0.80 (0.69‐0.93) and 0.75 (0.64‐0.87) for IARC alcohol‐related cancers, 0.61 (0.39‐0.96) and 0.61 (0.39‐0.94) for head and neck cancer (n = 196) and 0.68 (0.53‐0.88) and 0.60 (0.46‐0.78) for oesophageal cancer (n = 546). There were no significant associations of these genotypes with risks of liver (n = 651), colorectal (n = 556), stomach (n = 725) or lung (n = 1135) cancers. Among male drinkers, the risks associated with higher alcohol consumption were greater among ALDH2‐rs671 AG than GG carriers for head and neck, oesophageal and lung cancers (Pinteraction <.02). Among women, only 2% drank alcohol regularly, with no comparable associations observed between genotype and cancer. Summary: The genus Manihot, with around 120 known species, is native to a wide range of habitats and regions in the tropical and subtropical Americas. Its high species richness and recent diversification only c. 6 million years ago have significantly complicated previous phylogenetic analyses. Several basic elements of Manihot evolutionary history therefore remain unresolved.Here, we conduct a comprehensive phylogenomic analysis of Manihot, focusing on exhaustive sampling of South American taxa.We find that two recently described species from northeast Brazil's Atlantic Forest were the earliest to diverge, strongly suggesting a South American common ancestor of Manihot. Ancestral state reconstruction indicates early Manihot diversification in dry forests, with numerous independent episodes of new habitat colonization, including into savannas and rainforests within South America. We identify the closest wild relatives to Manihot esculenta, including the crop cassava, and we quantify extensive wild introgression into the cassava gene pool from at least five wild species, including Manihot glaziovii, a species used widely in breeding programs. Finally, we show that this wild‐to‐crop introgression substantially shapes the mutation load in cassava.Our findings provide a detailed case study for neotropical evolutionary history in a diverse and widespread group, and a robust phylogenomic framework for future Manihot and cassava research. Background: Impairment in both cognition and instrumental activities of daily living (iADL) are key diagnostic features of dementia. Few studies have compared trajectories of cognition and iADL. By comparing trajectories of cognitive decline with both self‐rated and informant rated iADL, the study determines whether these aspects are related or decline in parallel and where there is a difference between perceptions of change. Method: Data from the Improving the experience of Dementia and Enhancing Active Life (IDEAL) study were used. The study comprises 1537, 1183, and 851 people with dementia, and 1277, 977, and 749 carers at baseline (T1), 12 months later (Time 2, T2), and 24 months later (Time 3, T3), respectively. Cognition was assessed with the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination‐III (ACE‐III), higher scores indicate fewer cognitive difficulties. iADL was assessed using the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ), higher scores indicate more iADL difficulties. Both self‐ratings (FAQ‐S) and informant ratings (FAQ‐I) were collected. Because of the differences in the scale and distribution of FAQ and ACE‐III, scores were converted to ranks to enable comparison of trajectories between the two measures; deciles were calculated at T1 and imposed on T2 and T3 scores. Result: As ACE‐III decreased both FAQ‐S and FAQ‐I increased suggesting that people with dementia with more cognitive difficulties were rated as having greater iADL difficulties by both people with dementia themselves and their carers. FAQ‐S declined on average by ‐0.10 (‐0.26, 0.06) decile points per timepoint more than ACE‐III. As confidence intervals overlapped zero this suggests that FAQ‐S and ACE‐III ratings declined at a similar rate. FAQ‐I declined on average by ‐0.31 (‐0.43, ‐0.19) decile points per timepoint more than ACE‐III. The trajectory over the two years suggests that FAQ‐I ratings declined at a significantly greater rate than ACE‐III scores. Conclusion: Both cognition and iADL, whether self‐ or informant‐rated declined over two years. Trajectory analysis suggests that self‐rated iADL was generally concordant with cognitive decline, whereas informant‐rated iADL reflected more perceived decline than cognition. Degradation of agrochemicals in soil is frequently faster under field conditions than in laboratory studies. Field studies are carried out on relatively undisturbed soil, whereas laboratory studies typically use sieved soil, which can have a significant impact on the physical and microbial nature of the soil and may contribute to differences in degradation between laboratory and field studies. A laboratory study was therefore conducted to determine the importance of soil structure and variable soil moisture on the degradation of 2 fungicides (azoxystrobin and paclobutrazol) that show significant differences between laboratory and field degradation rates in regulatory studies. Degradation rates were measured in undisturbed cores of a sandy clay loam soil (under constant or variable moisture contents) and in sieved soil. For azoxystrobin, degradation rates under all conditions were similar (median degradation time [DegT50] 34–37 d). However, for paclobutrazol, degradation was significantly faster in undisturbed cores (DegT50 255 d in sieved soil and 63 d in undisturbed cores). Varying the moisture content did not further enhance degradation of either fungicide. Further examination into the impact of soil structure on paclobutrazol degradation, comparing undisturbed and sieved/repacked cores, revealed that the impact of sieving could not be mitigated by repacking the soil to a realistic bulk density. Examination of fungal and bacterial community structure using automated ribosomal spacer analysis showed significant initial differences between sieved/repacked and intact soil cores, although such differences were reduced at the end of the study (70 d). The present study demonstrates that disruption of soil structure significantly impacts microbial community structure, and for some compounds this may explain the differences between laboratory and field degradation rates. Objective: To determine whether auditory hallucinations in community-dwelling people with dementia (PwD) living in the community impacted on quality of life (QoL), subjective wellbeing and life satisfaction.Design: Cross-sectional cohort study.Settings and Participants: 1251 community-dwelling PwD and caregivers were included in this study.Measures: Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire completed by caregiver interview. Mean differences between the absence and presence of auditory hallucinations were compared to scores on three validated measures of living well: QoL in Alzheimer's disease scale (QoL-AD), World Health Organization-Five Well-being Index and Satisfaction with Life Scale. Analysis of covariance determined the confounding contributions of cognition via Mini-Mental State Examination, depression via Geriatric Depression Scale-10, caregiver stress via Relative Stress Scale and whether antipsychotic drugs were prescribed.Results: Auditory hallucinations were associated with lower scores for QoL (p < 0.001, η2  = 0.01), wellbeing (p < 0.001, η2  = 0.02) and life satisfaction (p < 0.001, η2  = 0.01). After controlling for background measures, which were potential confounds, the relationship between auditory hallucinations and QoL (p = 0.04, pη2  = 0.01) and wellbeing (p < 0.000, pη2  = 0.02) remained significant but there was no significant association with life satisfaction.Conclusion: Auditory hallucinations are associated with lower QoL and wellbeing in PwD living in the community. Alcohol drinking is associated with increased risks of several site‐specific cancers, but its role in many other cancers remains inconclusive. Evidence is more limited from China, where cancer rates, drinking patterns and alcohol tolerability differ importantly from Western populations. The prospective China Kadoorie Biobank recruited >512 000 adults aged 30 to 79 years from 10 diverse areas during 2004 to 2008, recording alcohol consumption patterns by a standardised questionnaire. Self‐reported alcohol consumption was estimated as grams of pure alcohol per week based on beverage type, amount consumed per occasion and drinking frequency. After 10 years of follow‐up, 26 961 individuals developed cancer. Cox regression was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) relating alcohol consumption to incidence of site‐specific cancers. Overall, 33% (n = 69 734) of men drank alcohol regularly (ie, ≥weekly) at baseline. Among male current regular drinkers, alcohol intake showed positive dose‐response associations with risks of cancers in the oesophagus (655 events; HR = 1.98 [95%CI 1.79‐2.18], per 280 g/wk), mouth and throat (236; 1.74 [1.48‐2.05]), liver (573; 1.52 [1.31‐1.76]), colon‐rectum (575; 1.19 [1.00‐1.43]), gallbladder (107; 1.60 [1.16‐2.22]) and lung (1017; 1.25 [1.10‐1.42]), similarly among never‐ and ever‐regular smokers. After adjustment for total alcohol intake, there were greater risks of oesophageal cancer in daily drinkers than nondaily drinkers and of liver cancer when drinking without meals. The risks of oesophageal cancer and lung cancer were greater in men reporting flushing after drinking than not. In this male population, alcohol drinking accounted for 7% of cancer cases. Among women, only 2% drank regularly, with no clear associations between alcohol consumption and cancer risk. Among Chinese men, alcohol drinking is associated with increased risks of cancer at multiple sites, with certain drinking patterns (eg, daily, drinking without meals) and low alcohol tolerance further exacerbating the risks. What's new? A comprehensive assessment of the role of alcohol in cancer aetiology is needed in China, where cancer rates, drinking patterns, and alcohol tolerability differ from those in the West. In this large prospective study, regular alcohol drinkers had increased risks of cancers in several sites previously considered to be alcohol‐related (i.e., oesophagus, mouth and throat, liver and colon‐rectum) as well as in the lung and gallbladder. Certain drinking patterns (e.g., drinking daily or without meals) and low alcohol tolerance further exacerbated the risks. Introduction: Elevated β‐amyloid is used to enroll individuals into preclinical Alzheimer's disease trials, but the screening process is inefficient and expensive. Novel enrichment methods are needed to improve efficiency of enrollment. Methods: Alzheimer's disease incidence rates and a polygenic hazard score were used to create a gene‐ and age‐defined ADAge. An ADAge cutpoint was chosen to optimally predict β‐amyloid positivity among clinically normal Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative participants and applied to an independent Alzheimer's Disease Research Center validation cohort. The impact of ADAge enrichment on screening costs was evaluated in the Anti‐Amyloid Treatment in Asymptomatic Alzheimer's Disease trial data. Results: In the validation cohort, the ADAge‐enriched sample had a higher proportion of individuals with elevated β‐amyloid (difference [95% CI] 0.19[0.07 to 0.33]) than the unenriched sample. ADAge enrichment lowered screening costs by $4.41 million (31.00%) in the real‐world clinical trial scenario. Objective: To assess whether preoperative gonioscopy status is associated with the development of postoperative glaucoma after phacoemulsification. Procedure: Eligible dogs and eyes were selected from medical records (2007‐2017), and each eye was classified as having normal or abnormal gonioscopy status. Records were examined for postoperative glaucoma, and data were collected for baseline variables including patient signalment, surgical factors, and pre, intra, and postoperative medications. Results: Of 305 dogs (505 eyes) selected for review in this study, 111 dogs (163 eyes) had abnormal gonioscopy findings, and 194 dogs (342 eyes) had normal gonioscopy findings. Postoperative glaucoma occurred in 24% (39/163) of eyes with abnormal gonioscopy and in 14% (49/342) eyes with normal gonioscopy. Eyes with abnormal gonioscopy status were at higher risk of postoperative glaucoma compared to normal eyes (P =.025). There was no important confounding due to the numerous baseline variables summarised above. Regardless of gonioscopy status, the risk of glaucoma was highest during the first 2 months after surgery. Conclusions: Eyes with abnormal gonioscopy findings are at increased risk of postoperative glaucoma compared with eyes with normal gonioscopy findings. Gonioscopy is recommended as a part of presurgical assessment in all dogs prior to phacoemulsification. Further study is needed to assess whether the incidence of postoperative glaucoma can be reduced by increased monitoring or altered treatment protocols in cases that are known to have abnormal gonioscopy findings prior to cataract surgery. White evangelical Protestants are the most skeptical major religious group in the United States regarding climate change. While their position of political influence in the Republican coalition is widely recognised, the full range of effects of this position on evangelicals' climate opinions is not. To move research on evangelicals from the margins of climate change opinion research, we review and integrate the interdisciplinary literature on US evangelicals, climate change, and politics. In assessing this literature, we identify three areas in need of further research. First, there is a critical need for more research on the climate attitudes of evangelicals of color, who comprise a growing share of the evangelical tradition in the US. Second, highlighting the Christian Right's active engagement in the climate debate, we identify a need for more experimental work examining how cues from religious elites may shape evangelicals' opinions. Finally, we suggest that to better harness insights across disciplines, researchers must become more explicitly aware of how different disciplines conceptualize temporality. Attending to temporal scale suggests that a new approach is needed to test how dominion beliefs, which are widely thought to be an important theological driver of climate skepticism, operate. We also suggest that two factors that appear to play a weak or limited role in driving climate skepticism over the short term (anti‐science attitudes and evangelical religiosity) may in fact play a significant role in driving skepticism over the medium term. Introduction: Many research studies have well investigated Alzheimer's disease (AD) detection and progression. However, the continuous‐time survival prediction of AD is not yet fully explored to support medical practitioners with predictive analytics. In this study, we develop a survival analysis approach to examine interactions between patients’ inherent temporal and medical patterns and predict the probability of the AD next stage progression during a time period. The likelihood of reaching the following AD stage is unique to a patient, helping the medical practitioner analyze the patient's condition and provide personalized treatment recommendations ahead of time. Methodologies: We simulate the disease progression based on patient profiles using non‐linear survival methods—non‐linear Cox proportional hazard model (Cox‐PH) and neural multi‐task logistic regression (N‐MTLR). In addition, we evaluate the concordance index (C‐index) and Integrated Brier Score (IBS) to describe the evolution to the next stage of AD. For personalized forecasting of disease, we also developed deep neural network models using the dataset provided by the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center with their multiple‐visit details between 2005 and 2017. Results: The experiment results show that our N‐MTLR based survival models outperform the CoxPH models, the best of which gives Concordance‐Index of 0.79 and IBS of 0.09. We obtained 50 critical features out of 92 by applying recursive feature elimination and random forest techniques on the clinical data; the top ones include normal cognition and behavior, criteria for dementia, community affairs, etc. Our study demonstrates that selecting critical features can improve the effectiveness of probabilities at each time interval. Conclusions: The proposed deep learning‐based survival method and model can be used by medical practitioners to predict the patients’ AD shift efficiently and recommend personalized treatment to mitigate or postpone the effects of AD. More generally, our proposed survival analysis approach for predicting disease stage shift can be used for other progressive diseases such as cancer, Huntington's disease, and scleroderma, just to mention a few, using the corresponding clinical data. Background: Elevated β‐amyloid (Aβ) is used to enroll clinically normal (CN) individuals in preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) trials, but the screening process is inefficient and expensive. Novel enrichment methods are needed to improve efficiency of enrollment of these individuals while reducing costs. We hypothesized that by combining a polygenic hazard score (PHS) and age‐specific risk for AD we could predict elevated Aβ in CN individuals. Method: AD incidence rates and each participant's PHS were used to adjust the participant's chronological age based on protective or deleterious genetic factors, thus creating an ADAge. An individual's ADAge is defined as the chronological age at which there is equivalent AD risk in the population. Meng's test was used in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort to assess whether the ADAge was more correlated with Aβ than was chronological age. An ADAge cutpoint was chosen to optimally predict Aβ positivity among 306 CN participants from the ADNI and applied to 1000 bootstrap samples of an independent validation cohort of 80 CN participants from the UC San Diego Shiley‐Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. The differences in means between samples enrolled by each strategy (ADAge enrichment vs no enrichment) were calculated to determine the efficiency of ADAge‐informed Aβ screening for preclinical AD trials as well as to determine the impact of ADAge enrichment on trial population demographics. The screening cost for enrolling 1000 Aβ+ CN participants in a clinical trial using each enrollment strategy was compared. Result: Compared to chronological age, ADAge was more correlated with Florbetapir SUVR in the ADNI cohort (p <.001). In the validation cohort, the ADAge‐enriched sample had a higher proportion of individuals with elevated Aβ (difference[95% CI] 0.19[0.07–0.33]) than the unenriched sample. The ADAge‐enriched sample was older than the unenriched sample (difference 3.00[0.94 – 5.22]). However, the samples were similar in the proportion of APOE ε4 carriers, the dementia rating scale score, and the proportion of female participants. ADAge enrichment lowered screening costs by $5.3 million (34%) in a clinical trial scenario. Premise: Nuclear microsatellite markers were developed for Linum bienne, the sister species of the crop L. usitatissimum, to provide molecular genetic tools for the investigation of L. bienne genetic diversity and structure. Methods and Results: Fifty microsatellite loci were identified in L. bienne by means of genome skimming, and 44 loci successfully amplified. Of these, 16 loci evenly spread across the L. usitatissimum reference nuclear genome were used for genotyping six L. bienne populations. Excluding one monomorphic locus, the number of alleles per locus ranged from two to 12. Four out of six populations harbored private alleles. The levels of expected and observed heterozygosity were 0.076 to 0.667 and 0.000 to 1.000, respectively. All 16 loci successfully cross‐amplified in L. usitatissimum. Conclusions: The 16 microsatellite loci developed here can be used for population genetic studies in L. bienne, and 28 additional loci that successfully amplified are available for further testing. Plant protection products (PPPs) undergo rigorous regulatory assessment to ensure that they do not pose unacceptable risks to the environment. Elucidation of their fate and behavior in soil is an integral part of this environmental risk assessment. The active substance degradation in soil of PPPs is first assessed in laboratory studies (typically following Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development [OECD] test guideline 307). Conditions in guideline laboratory studies are far removed from those occurring under agricultural use, and the contribution of crop roots has currently not been assessed. We integrated viable plant root systems, representative of 3 different crop types, into the OECD test guideline 307 design to assess their impact on the dissipation of the herbicide prometryn. Significantly faster decline of parent residue and higher formation of nonextractable residues were observed in all 3 planted systems. This led to a reduction in the time required for 50% of the compound to dissipate (DT50) of approximately one‐half in the presence of rye grass and hot pepper and of approximately one‐third in the presence of red clover. These findings imply that plants and their associated root networks can have a significant influence on PPP dissipation. Based on these data, greater environmental realism could be added to the standardized laboratory study design by the inclusion of plant root systems into higher tier studies, which, in turn, could serve to improve the environmental risk assessment process. Plasmonic superstructures (PS) based on Au/SiO2 were prepared for Shell‐Isolated Nanoparticle‐Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SHINERS) in liquid phase applications. These superstructures are composed of functionalized SiO2 spheres with plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) on their surface. Functionalization was performed with (3‐aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane, (3‐mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane and poly(ethylene‐imine) (PEI). Of these three, PEI‐functionalized spheres showed the highest adsorption density of Au NPs in TEM, UV/Vis and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. Upon decreasing the Au NP/SiO2 sphere size ratio, an increase in adsorption density was also observed. To optimize plasmonic activity, 61 nm Au NPs were adsorbed onto 900 nm SiO2‐PEI spheres and these PS were coated with an ultrathin layer (1–2 nm) of SiO2 to obtain Shell‐Isolated Plasmonic Superstructures (SHIPS), preventing direct contact between Au NPs and the liquid medium. Zeta potential measurements, TEM and SHINERS showed that SiO2 coating was successful. The detection limit for SHINERS using SHIPS and a 638 nm laser was around 10−12 m of Rhodamine (10−15 m for uncoated PS), all with acquisition settings suitable for catalysis applications. In situ and operando experiments play a crucial role in understanding the mechanisms behind catalytic processes. In these experiments it is important to have precise control over pressure and temperature. In this work, we use luminescence thermometry to map the temperature distribution in a 300 μm microelectromechanical system nano‐reactor with a resolution of ca. 10 μm. These measurements showed a temperature gradient between the center and edge of the heater of ca. 200 °C (at Tset=600 °C) in vacuum and, in addition, a large offset of the local temperature of ca. 100 °C (at Tset=600 °C) in a non‐vacuum (i. e., air, He and H2) environment. The observed temperature heterogeneities can explain differences observed in the reduction behavior of Co‐based Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis catalyst particles at different locations in the nano‐reactor as determined by scanning transmission X‐ray microscopy. Objective: Self-affirmation of personal values can reduce defensive responses to threatening health promotion messages, probably because it induces a positive and expansive view of the self. However, coping with threat is also an interpersonal process. We developed other-affirmation inductions that focus on values held by others. Two studies examined the effects of common affirmation inductions modified for other-affirmation: affirmation of a specific value (kindness) and affirmation of a personally chosen value.Design: Randomized and controlled three-group (self-, other-, or no-affirmation conditions) single-factor design. Outcomes were time spent in self-directed viewing the message and self-reported outcomes that included intentions to reduce drinking, evaluations of the message, and risk perceptions.Methods: Students were randomized to self-, other, or no-affirmation conditions and asked to read a threatening anti-alcohol message.Results: Self- and other-affirmation increased message viewing time in Study 1. In both studies, other-affirmation increased self-reported outcomes, and study 1 showed this effect to be more prominent in females. In Study 1, the effects of self- and other-affirmation on message exposure were greater in participants with defensive coping styles, and other-affirmation effects were mediated by more positive views of others and their values. This mediation was independent of self-affirmation.Conclusion: Other-affirmation increased self-reported outcomes and, in Study 1, reduced defensiveness to and improved viewing times to an anti-alcohol message. Other-affirmation could be useful, because it may be suited to particular subpopulations, such as females, and can be easily incorporated into mass-reach health communications. Objectives: The objectives of the study are to investigate how different levels of functional ability relate to quality of life, well-being, and satisfaction with life, conceptualised as reflecting capability to "live well" in people with dementia.Methods/design: Participants were 1496 people with mild-to-moderate dementia and 1188 informants who completed baseline assessments in the Improving the experience of Dementia and Enhancing Active Life (IDEAL) cohort study. Total self-rated and informant-rated scores on the Functional Activities Questionnaire were split into six ability levels to monitor how poorer functioning impacts the ability to live well. We also investigated the potential influence of sociodemographic and diagnostic variables, depression, cognition, and carer stress.Results: Multivariate multiple regression models found that people with dementia who had the greatest functional impairment according to self-ratings and informant ratings had poorer living well scores than those with the least functional impairment. Sociodemographic and diagnostic factors and cognition had little impact on effect sizes. For self-ratings, depression attenuated the relationship between functional ability and living well, whereas carer stress attenuated informant ratings.Conclusions: People with dementia with the least functional impairments had greater capability to live well than those with the most functional impairment. Even subtle perceived difficulties in functional ability had a detrimental effect on the ability of people with dementia to live well. Depression in people with dementia and carer stress in informants influenced these associations, and therefore, these factors should be routinely included in future research studies and clinical assessments. Domesticated crops show a reduced level of diversity that is commonly attributed to the "domestication bottleneck"; a drastic reduction in the population size associated with subsampling the wild progenitor species and the imposition of selection pressures associated with the domestication syndrome. A prediction of the domestication bottleneck is a sharp decline in genetic diversity early in the domestication process. Surprisingly, archaeological genomes of three major annual crops do not indicate that such a drop in diversity occurred early in the domestication process. In light of this observation, we revisit the general assumption of the domestication bottleneck concept in our current understanding of the evolutionary process of domestication. Background: Among adults with schizophrenia, evidence suggests that premorbid deficits in different cognitive domains follow distinct developmental courses during childhood and adolescence. The aim of this study was to delineate trajectories of adolescent cognitive functions prospectively among different groups of youth at‐risk for schizophrenia, relative to their typically developing (TD) peers. Method: Using linear mixed models adjusted for sex, ethnicity, parental occupation and practice effects, cognitive development between ages 9 and 16 years was compared for youth characterised by a triad of well‐replicated developmental antecedents of schizophrenia (ASz; N = 32) and youth with a least one affected relative with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (FHx; N = 29), relative to TD youth (N = 45). Participants completed measures of IQ, scholastic achievement, memory and executive function at three time‐points, separated by approximately 24‐month intervals. Results: Compared to TD youth, both ASz and FHx youth displayed stable developmental deficits in verbal working memory and inhibition/switching executive functions. ASz youth additionally presented with stable deficits in measures of vocabulary (IQ), word reading, numerical operations, and category fluency executive function, and a slower rate of growth (developmental lag) on spelling from 9 to 16 years than TD peers. Conversely, faster rates of growth relative to TD peers (developmental delay) were observed on visual and verbal memory, and on category fluency executive function (ASz youth only) and on matrix reasoning (IQ) and word reading (FHx youth only). Conclusions: These differential patterns of deviation from normative adolescent cognitive development among at‐risk youth imply potential for cognitive rehabilitation targeting of specific cognitive deficits at different developmental phases. Parabolic dunes are widespread aeolian landforms found in a variety of environments. Despite modeling advances and good understanding of how they evolve, there is limited empirical data on their dynamics at short time scales of hours and on how these dynamics relate to their medium‐term evolution. This study presents the most comprehensive data set to date on aeolian processes (airflow and sediment transport) inside a parabolic dune at an event scale. This is coupled with information on elevation changes inside the landform to understand its morphological response to a single wind event. Results are contextualized against the medium‐term (years) allowing us to investigate one of the most persistent conundrums in geomorphology, that of the significance of short‐term findings for landform evolution. Our field data suggested three key findings: (1) sediment transport rates inside parabolic dunes correlate well with wind speeds rather than turbulence; (2) up to several tonnes of sand can move through these landforms in a few hours; and (3) short‐term elevation changes inside parabolic dunes can be complex and different from long‐term net spatial patterns, including simultaneous erosion and accumulation along the same wall. Modeled airflow patterns along the basin were similar to those measured in situ for a range of common wind directions, demonstrating the potential for strong transport during multiple events. Mesoscale analyses suggested that the measured event was representative of the type of events potentially driving significant geomorphic changes over years, with supply‐limiting conditions playing an important role in resultant flux amounts. Plain Language Summary: We examine detailed surface changes inside a parabolic dune feature during a wind event. Resulting accelerated winds gave very strong transport rates, correlating well with average wind speed measurements across the landform basin. Elevation changes as a result of the event were up to ±0.3 m in places, with complex surface patterns previously not observed including deposition against the upper slopes of the erosional walls. We estimate that a total of approximately 4.8 tonnes moved through this dynamic landform feature in 3.5 hr. The contextualization of the event in a time scale of 2 years showed that this was a common type of event, with an average frequency of almost three times per month and of average magnitude. This suggests that similar events should be able to move similar amounts of sand, hence making these landforms very dynamic and responsive to wind events. Existing evidence remains inconclusive as to how the association between inactive ALDH2 and esophageal cancer (EC) depends on alcohol consumption. The study is based on the China Kadoorie Biobank cohort, with 10 years follow‐up of 0.5 million adults aged 30–79 years. ALDH2 activity was assessed by both self‐reported flushing response and Glu504Lys (rs671 G > A) polymorphism. Among both male and female participants who consumed alcohol less than weekly (n = 69,519; 211 EC cases), low active or inactive ALDH2 was not associated with increased EC risk [HRs (95% CIs): GA vs. GG 0.75 (0.54, 1.04); AA vs. GG 1.01 (0.46, 2.20)]. Among male weekly alcohol consumers, both flushing response [n = 59,380; 501 EC cases; HRs (95% CIs): “soon after drinking” vs. “no” flushing response 1.45 (1.05, 2.01)] and rs671 [n = 10,692; 94 EC cases; GA vs. GG 3.31 (1.94, 5.67)] were associated with EC risk. The increased EC risk associated with “soon” response or rs671 GA was apparent in men consuming alcohol ≥30g/d. Among male daily consumers, the HRs (95% CIs) for EC associated with 15g/d of alcohol were 1.28 (1.15, 1.44) for “soon” response [vs. other responses: 1.12 (1.09, 1.15); pinteraction = 0.047; n = 36,401, 425 EC cases] and 1.41 (1.08, 1.82) for rs671 GA [vs. GG: 1.16 (1.06, 1.27); pinteraction = 0.493; n = 6,607, 80 EC cases]. Self‐reported flushing response had low sensitivity (56.8%) and high specificity (88.4%) in identifying rs671 A allele among male weekly alcohol consumers. In conclusion, low‐activity ALDH2 was associated with increased EC risk among male heavy alcohol consumers. Objective: Previous studies have indicated that dementia and depression have a considerable impact on the functional capacity of older adults, also influencing awareness about ability. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the impact of dementia, depression and awareness on activities of daily living (ADL) in a sample from a middle-income country.Methods: The current study explored impairments in basic, instrumental and advanced ADL using a factorial design comparing four groups: people with dementia and depression, people with dementia without depression, older adults with depression but no dementia and healthy older adults. For each type of ADL, self-report and informant report was contrasted in order to investigate the issue of lack of awareness in relation to ADL.Results: Results indicate that dementia is associated with impairments in all types of ADL. Advanced ADL were also reduced in depressed participants. In addition, in the case of instrumental and basic ADL, informant report indicated less preserved abilities than participant self-report, particularly in people with dementia.Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of developing interventions and compensatory strategies to prevent loss of ADL in dementia, also suggesting that early intervention in older adults with depression should focus on advanced ADL to prevent social isolation and withdrawal. Finally, the findings indicate that self-information about ADL may be compromised in dementia, so clinicians exploring disability should consider fully different aspects of ADL in this group. Background: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a common hematologic malignancy; however, its occurrence during pregnancy is unusual due to its low prevalence in females of childbearing age. There are conflicting reports of how to best manage CML in pregnancy, particularly in the setting of leukocytosis.Hemapheresis: A 30-year-old female was diagnosed with CML at 18 weeks' estimated gestational age. On initial presentation she reported fatigue, night sweats, and early satiety, and was found to have a white blood cell (WBC) count of 69.3 × 109 /L and platelet count of 366 × 109 /L. Her disease was managed during pregnancy using interferon-α alone despite persistent leukocytosis.Conclusion: CML may be effectively managed during pregnancy, even in the setting of leukocytosis, without the application of leukocytapheresis. Management relies not only upon the coordination of drug therapy and fetal monitoring, but requires close communication between multiple medical disciplines. Leukocytapheresis has been safely performed during pregnancy and may be a suitable adjunct management strategy in pregnant patients diagnosed with CML with specific clinical presentations, such as hyperleukocytosis (WBC count > 150 × 109 /L) and/or symptomatic leukostasis. Objective: While there are several cognitive screening tests available for the detection of cortical dementias such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), these are rarely designed to be sensitive to vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). The Brief Memory and Executive Test (BMET) is a screening measure designed to be sensitive to the cognitive profile of both VCI and AD. This study investigated the ability of the BMET to detect AD, and to differentiate between VCI and AD.Methods: This study included 150 patients, with either SVD, both with (n = 48) and without VCI (n = 51), or AD (N = 51) and 51 healthy controls. Participants were aged between 40 and 90 years of age and completed both the BMET and the MMSE.Results: Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed as before the BMET is a good predictor SVD. Additionally, the BMET was a good predictor of AD (AUC = 0.96) and performed at least as well as the MMSE (AUC = 0.92) when differentiating AD patients from healthy controls. The BMET had a sensitivity of 86% and specificity of 100% for detecting AD patients from control subjects. Using the difference in cognitive profile between the AD and VCI group, we developed an index score which correctly classified 76% of patients as either having VCI or AD.Conclusion: The BMET is a brief and sensitive tool for the detection of cognitive impairment due to both SVD and AD and can be used to aid in the differentiation of the 2 diseases. Summary: Wheat was introduced to China approximately 4500 years ago, where it adapted over a span of time to various environments in agro‐ecological growing zones. We investigated 717 Chinese and 14 Iranian/Turkish geographically diverse, locally adapted wheat landraces with 27 933 DArTseq (for 717 landraces) and 312 831 Wheat660K (for a subset of 285 landraces) markers. This study highlights the adaptive evolutionary history of wheat cultivation in China. Environmental stresses and independent selection efforts have resulted in considerable genome‐wide divergence at the population level in Chinese wheat landraces. In total, 148 regions of the wheat genome show signs of selection in at least one geographic area. Our data show adaptive events across geographic areas, from the xeric northwest to the mesic south, along and among homoeologous chromosomes, with fewer variations in the D genome than in the A and B genomes. Multiple variations in interdependent functional genes such as regulatory and metabolic genes controlling germination and flowering time were characterized, showing clear allelic frequency changes corresponding to the dispersion of wheat in China. Population structure and selection data reveal that Chinese wheat spread from the northwestern Caspian Sea region to South China, adapting during its agricultural trajectory to increasingly mesic and warm climatic areas. Here, we present a qualitative thematic analysis of self-reports of positive and negative experiences that occurred while conducting academic field research. Twenty-six semistructured interviews highlighted two central themes: (1) variability in clarity of appropriate professional behavior and rules at fieldsites, and (2) access, or obstacles therein, to professional resources and opportunity. In some instances, respondent narratives recalled a lack of consequences for violations of rules governing appropriate conduct. These violations included harassment and assault, and ultimately disruptions to career trajectories. A heuristic construct of a traffic light describing Red, Yellow, and Green experiences illustrates the ramifications of this distribution of clarity and access within fieldsite contexts. These results extend the findings from our previously reported Survey of Academic Field Experiences (SAFE) about the climates and contexts created and experienced in field research settings. Moreover, this study addresses specific tactics, such as policies, procedures, and paradigms that fieldsite directors and principal investigators can implement to improve field experiences and better achieve equal opportunity in field research settings. Halogen bonding (XB) is a highly-directional class of intermolecular interactions that has been used as a powerful tool to drive the design of crystals in the solid phase. To date, the majority of XB donors have been iodine-containing compounds, with many fewer involving brominated analogues. We report the formation of adducts in the vapour phase from a series of dibromoperfluoroalkyl compounds, BrCF2(CF2) nCF2Br ( n = 2, 4, 6), and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the colourless crystals identified 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,4-dibromoperfluorobutane (1/1), C4Br2F8·C6H12N2, (I), 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,6-dibromoperfluorohexane (1/1), C6Br2F12·C6H12N2, (II), and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,8-dibromoperfluorooctane (1/1), C8Br2F16·C6H12N2, (III), each of which displays a one-dimensional halogen-bonded network. All three adducts exhibit N...Br distances less than the sum of the van der Waals radii, with butane analogue (I) showing the shortest N...Br halogen-bond distances yet reported between a bromoperfluorocarbon and a nitrogen base [2.809 (3) and 2.818 (3) Å], which are 0.58 and 0.59 Å shorter than the sum of the van der Waals radii. A family of heterometallic [Cat][TixMO(x+1)(O2CtBu)2x+2] rings is reported where Cat=a secondary or tertiary alkyl ammonium ion, x=7, 8 or 9, and M=FeIII, GaIII, CrIII, InIII and AlIII. The structures are regular polygons with eight, nine or ten vertices with each edge bridged by an oxide and two pivalates. ABSTRACT The year 2016 in biological anthropology represented a return to the methodical study of classic questions and increased integrative team-based research that utilizes multiple methodological approaches. This review is not comprehensive, but rather highlights several papers that reflect trends in four areas of research within biological anthropology: paleoanthropology, primatology, human biology, and anthropological genetics. Methodological innovation enabled scholars in paleoanthropology to tackle questions once hampered by small sample size. Primatologists approached studies of behavior and reproduction with the rigor characteristic of the subdiscipline, while paying increasing attention to anthropogenic influences on primate habitats. Like their colleagues in paleoanthropology, human biologists also returned to enduring questions regarding reproduction, human adaptation, and behavior, including, notably, a focus on variability in cultural practice and meaning, as well as resource inequity. The publications representing anthropological genetics signify a movement toward an incorporation of multiple lines of evidence in our understanding of human and nonhuman primate ancestry. In total, these papers reveal shifts in biological anthropology toward research that is increasingly aware of the limits of siloed science and attuned to addressing issues salient to the populations and communities in which we work. In the management of azoospermia, a combination of testicular sperm extraction and intracytoplasmic sperm injection ( ICSI) is usually the most successful option for fatherhood. However, an outstanding question remains: How can at least a few spermatozoa be obtained from the ejaculate, thus avoiding the need for a surgical procedure? A 36-year-old man presented to Assisted Reproduction Unit with his 26-year-old wife. The ultrasound assessment revealed bilateral microlithiasis. Two spermograms revealed absolute azoospermia. Levels of follicle-stimulating hormone ( FSH) and luteinising hormone were normal-low. The patient underwent 10 months of treatment with clomiphene citrate. A bilateral testicular sperm extraction failed to retrieve spermatozoa and revealed a maturation arrest at spermatocyte/spermatid stages depending on the tubules. Clomiphene citrate was replaced with recombinant FSH ( rFSH). After 9-month treatment with rFSH, motile spermatozoa from droplets of ejaculate pellet were cryopreserved as a single straw. Ovarian stimulation was provided using classic antagonist protocol, and five mature oocytes were collected. Two consecutive fresh semen samples on the day of ICSI yielded seven motile spermatozoa, and fertilisation was achieved in all five oocytes. On day 3, two embryos were transferred, yielding positive beta-human chorionic gonadotropin and a healthy delivery of a boy and a girl. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Carnation Creek project is a long-term study of the effects of forestry practices on a small coastal watershed (11 km2) located in southwestern Vancouver Island. Initiated in 1970, this pretreatment versus post-treatment case study consists of 5 years of preharvest, 6 years of during-harvest, and now, 34 years of postharvest research. Forty-one percent of the watershed was clearcut from 1976 to 1981. One tributary sub-basin (1.1 km2) was left as an unharvested reference drainage. Riparian treatments varied from clearcuts to a variable-width buffer. Fish population responses to logging have been complex, and specific to species and life stages. Stream warming due partly to riparian harvest increased the growth and survival of juvenile coho salmon and elevated smolt production by 65% for nearly three decades. These relatively short-term thermal benefits offset the effects of riparian clearcutting which included accelerated bank erosion, streambed scour, loss of stable in-stream wood, and sediment movement downstream. Landslides in 1984 greatly amplified these effects but took more than 20 years to propagate downstream to reduce fish habitat complexity and increase streambed instability and sediment transport over the entire portion inhabited by anadromous salmon. These delayed impacts have surpassed the thermal-related benefits for coho salmon. Fry-to-smolt overwinter survival has declined from a mean of 50% between 1982 and 2004 to 15% since 2005. Coho salmon smolt production has consequently been reduced to below prelogging levels. Results show that forestry-related alterations may take decades to fully develop and persist for decades longer without watershed and stream channel restoration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
