Southern Africa has been strongly affected by ongoing climate change in recent decades. Rainfall variability is modulated by regional patterns of moisture advection and convergence in the lower troposphere. Using reanalysis, ground and satellite‐based rainfall products and observations from 10 weather stations, we perform a synoptic and climatological analysis focussing on atmospheric circulation, moisture transport and their relationship with rainfall anomalies over the Angolan and Namibian Plateau region. Results clearly show that a stronger (weaker) Zambezi low level jet (LLJ) magnitudes are associated with above (below) normal rainfalls over the main Angolan and Namibian plateaus. With lower confidence, a stronger Limpopo LLJ may also lead to enhanced rainfall over Namibia and southeast Angola. The Zambezi LLJ moisture fluxes are moderately controlled by Mozambique Chanel Trough and Angola Low intensities, while the Limpopo LLJ intensities have very low influence from the Mozambique Chanel Trough and Angola Low, respectively. The Angola Low in its tropical phase is associated with deeper moisture convergence and stronger vertical velocities, leading to higher amounts of precipitable water within the air column, thus enhancing precipitation over the region. It is shown that the major moisture source of rainfall, which is advected to via the Zambezi LLJ, is the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, the Atlantic Ocean plays a minor role. Given the current lack of observations and projected climate change, further research and investments are urgently needed in the region, for example, regarding the expansion of the surface data network. Globally, mountain systems are unevenly exposed to risks of extreme precipitation. Within the Himalayan region, precipitation extremes are a rising concern, but their current understanding is limited. In this study, we use 113 years of precipitation data to rank and characterize precipitation extremes in the Indian Western Himalayas (IWH). Our statistical ranking method integrates precipitation spatial extent and its intensity across different durations for determining the severity of extreme events. The proposed ranking method accounts for multi‐day duration ranking method to capture persistent precipitation episodes. Results show that the method accurately detects and ranks the most extreme precipitation events that occurred in the IWH and indicate locations of these events. Our results highlight that critical long duration events in the region (e.g., 10 days) are missed at ranks at shorter duration (e.g., 2–3 days), thereby highlighting the importance to multi‐day precipitation extremes ranking. In addition, the proposed ranking method provides information about the event duration that will be associated with the highest impact on society, carrying high significance. Compound weather and climate events are combinations of climate drivers and/or hazards that contribute to societal or environmental risk. Studying compound events often requires a multidisciplinary approach combining domain knowledge of the underlying processes with, for example, statistical methods and climate model outputs. Recently, to aid the development of research on compound events, four compound event types were introduced, namely (a) preconditioned, (b) multivariate, (c) temporally compounding, and (d) spatially compounding events. However, guidelines on how to study these types of events are still lacking. Here, we consider four case studies, each associated with a specific event type and a research question, to illustrate how the key elements of compound events (e.g., analytical tools and relevant physical effects) can be identified. These case studies show that (a) impacts on crops from hot and dry summers can be exacerbated by preconditioning effects of dry and bright springs. (b) Assessing compound coastal flooding in Perth (Australia) requires considering the dynamics of a non-stationary multivariate process. For instance, future mean sea-level rise will lead to the emergence of concurrent coastal and fluvial extremes, enhancing compound flooding risk. (c) In Portugal, deeplandslides are often caused by temporal clusters of moderate precipitation events. Finally, (d) crop yield failures in France and Germany are strongly correlated, threatening European food security through spatially compounding effects. These analyses allow for identifying general recommendations for studying compound events. Overall, our insights can serve as a blueprint for compound event analysis across disciplines and sectors. The study of atmospheric rivers (ARs) and their impacts on extreme precipitation are currently of great research interest in view of their clear socioeconomical implications. However, studies of this type generally contain caveats. The first of these is of a meteorological nature, and is concerned with the diversity of the different meteorological patterns that can be associated in the phenomenological definition, in that there is no guarantee that all so‐called ARs follow the same one. The second concern involves the initial definition of an AR, which implicitly assumes the subtropical origin of the atmospheric moisture that feeds it. To date, it has been observed that in many cases of ARs, most of the moisture originates in regions at higher latitudes. The aim of this article is to open a debate on these two aspects by using well‐known examples of ARs which fit different meteorological patterns, and showing a climatology of the moisture sources that feed ARs. The Iberian Peninsula (IP) is often affected by extreme precipitation and severe winds that are mostly associated with extratropical cyclones and their atmospheric fronts. ERA5 reanalysis data are used to revise and update two existing rankings of extreme precipitation and extreme potential wind‐loss days for the extended winter months on the IP. A ranking of concurrent precipitation and wind extreme events is produced by matching the two individual rankings for the IP and for specific IP subregions, including its main river basins. The intensity and the variability at the interannual and decadal scale are evaluated for precipitation, wind and concurrent precipitation and wind events. A systematic analysis of the underlying synoptic conditions is pursued for the top100 most extreme concurrent events including (a) cyclones' trajectories, (b) the presence of an Atmospheric River (AR), (c) recurrent patterns in the locations affected by precipitation and wind extremes and (d) possible long‐term trends. Results show that 85% of concurrent precipitation and wind extreme events are clearly associated with a cyclonic feature and most of these cyclones either cross the IP or pass to the northwest. Concurrent events are more likely occurring in the northwestern sectors of the IP on wintertime as in recent decades a downward trend for the events' frequency is observed in autumn. ARs are more likely associated with the strongest events occurring on the western sector of IP. Accordingly, the areas that mostly experience concurrent precipitation and wind extremes related to those systems are located in the northwestern sector of the peninsula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Lagrangian analysis is applied to identify the main moisture source areas associated with atmospheric rivers (ARs) making landfall along the west coast of South Africa during the extended austral winter months from 1980 to 2014. The results show that areas that provide the anomalous uptake of moisture can be categorized into four regions: (1) the South Atlantic Ocean between 10°S and 30°S, (2) a clear local maximum in the eastern South Atlantic, (3) a continental source of anomalous uptake to the north of the Western Cape, and (4) over South America at a distance of more than 7000 km from the target region. It emerges that the South American moisture source can be linked to a particular phase of the South American low‐level jet, known as a no Chaco jet event (NCJE), which transports moisture to the western and central South Atlantic basin. Concisely, we provide strong evidence that the two margins of the South Atlantic Ocean appear connected by two meteorological structures, with the NCJE playing a key role of transporting moisture from South America to the western and central South Atlantic basin, feeding the AR that transports some of the moisture to the west coast of South Africa. Using Lagrangian analysis, performed over the extended austral winter months from 1980–2014, we provide strong evidence that the two continental margins of the South Atlantic Ocean appear connected by two meteorological structures. Atmospheric fronts are fundamental features of the weather variability in the mid‐latitudes and are frequently associated with high‐impact weather events such as hail, wind gusts or precipitation. A method to link precipitation with synoptic‐scale fronts on sub‐daily timescales is developed based on ERA‐Interim data (1979–2016). A case study, a climatology and a trend analysis are presented and discussed. Spatially, an optimal attribution radius is identified based on a random sampling technique. The method is demonstrated using a past weather event that occurred over western Europe. Annual and seasonal cycles are presented and confirm, in agreement with previous studies, that frontal precipitation accounts for a large fraction of all precipitation (up to 80%) in the mid‐latitudes, especially during autumn and winter. Finally, a negative trend in frontal precipitation is identified, mostly affecting the Gulf Stream region. Cold fronts drive most of the observed trends in this region and the trend pattern suggests a polewards displacement of the zone of enhanced precipitation. A method is presented to relate, in time and space, precipitation to mid‐latitudes synoptic‐scale fronts using 6‐hourly ERA‐Interim data, distinguishing warm and cold fronts (a). The method is validated using a case study occurred over the North Atlantic and European sector (b). Annual and seasonal climatological means for precipitation assigned to fronts are analysed (c). Extreme winter precipitation across the western Iberian Peninsula is frequently connected to atmospheric rivers, which are bands of intense water vapour transport (integrated vapour transport, IVT). Recent research over Western Europe has shown that by using the IVT forecasts in the form of the extreme forecast index (EFI), a tool that identifies anomalous conditions, it is possible to provide earlier awareness of extreme precipitation events than by using the precipitation EFI directly. The aim of the present paper is to assess these findings further by identifying the regions of Iberia where such IVT forecasts are skilful and for what lead times. Employing the EFI on the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Integrated Forecasting System ensemble for winters 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 and using high‐density daily surface precipitation observations, the IVT EFI is shown to have slightly more skill (than the precipitation EFI) in discriminating extreme precipitation anomalies across the western Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and northwestern Spain) from forecast day 11 onwards. The reasoning is that the higher IVT predictability means that the IVT EFI is more able to detect the approximate location of extreme events at earlier lead times than the precipitation EFI. In contrast, for shorter forecast lead times, the precipitation EFI is more skilful. Also, when considering the entire Iberian Peninsula, the precipitation EFI is more skilful and more appropriate to monitor for potential extremes even at longer lead times. The extreme forecast index (EFI) applied to water vapour transport has the ability to provide earlier awareness of extreme precipitation in western Iberia. This synoptic‐scale structure seen here on forecast day 1 on February 12, 2016, is typical during many extreme precipitation events in western Iberia. The synoptic‐scale characteristics of the water vapour transport EFI enable it to capture the approximate location of extremes earlier (from forecast day 11) compared with using the precipitation EFI. ABSTRACT An objective method for ranking extreme precipitation episodes in different time scales over the Iberian Peninsula (IP) is presented. It relies on the extensive use of the high-resolution (0.2°) gridded daily precipitation database available for the IP, spanning from 1950 to 2008. The sum of the normalized anomalies is computed over different time scales (2-10 days) to allow ranking the different anomalous precipitation multi-day periods. The magnitude of a precipitation episode is given taking into account the area (in percentage) that has precipitation anomalies above two standard deviations (std) and the mean values of these anomalies over this area. With these criteria, we are able to evaluate the spatial extent of the precipitation episodes as well as their spatially integrated intensity. Different precipitation rankings are built for the entire IP, for Portugal and independently for six of the major river basins in the IP. The different rankings correctly detect and categorize the most extreme precipitation episodes which occurred on the various domains. For each domain, in general, results show that few events dominate the top ten of a particular ranking; specific extreme events at shorter time scales (e.g. 2-3 days) may be absent from the top rankings at longer time scales (e.g. 10 days). When comparing the different domains, the top ten events are generally different from each other, thus highlighting the spatial variability of extreme precipitation in the IP. Moreover the methodology used to build the rankings imply that some events are considered extreme due to particularly high precipitation totals, while other episodes are more dependent on extensive areas affected by less extreme precipitation values. The different rankings revealed to be an useful tool for future studies in identifying the meteorological impacts of extreme precipitation episodes at the regional scale covering relatively large areas. ABSTRACT Flood events is the natural hazard that originated more damages and fatalities in the Iberian Peninsula in the last decades. While most 20th century extreme precipitation and flood episodes in Iberia have been documented, the same does not hold for most events that took place during the 19th century. This article describes the unusually high precipitation and associated impacts recorded during the 1855/1856 hydrological year. We combine newspaper reports, early instrumental precipitation series and sea level pressure ( SLP) reconstructed gridded fields. The early instrumental precipitation time series includes 11 observatories that were not previously digitized and preceded the implementation of the official meteorological observation network in Spain. We show that high values of precipitation were mostly recorded during the months of September, October 1855 and January 1856, with most of the flooding and damages occurring in the last month. The use of daily circulation weather types and monthly differences of SLP are particularly useful to explain the heavy precipitation in October and January, which were clearly associated with unusual high frequencies of wet weather types. However, SLP patterns cannot explain the September records, which could be associated to upper cold air intrusions in the Iberian Peninsula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method for ranking daily precipitation events is presented based on the most comprehensive database of daily gridded precipitation dataset available for the Iberian Peninsula spanning from 1950 to 2008. The magnitude of an event is obtained after considering the area affected as well as its intensity in every grid point and taking into account the daily normalized departure from climatology. The relationship between circulation weather types (WTs) and the spatial variability of precipitation across the Iberian Peninsula were studied using a high density, quality controlled, homogenized monthly precipitation database with approximately 3000 stations and interpolated to a 10 km grid. The circulation WTs were computed using an objective version of the Lamb classification centered on the Iberian Peninsula. A total of 26 WTs were selected for the period 1948-2003. Daily WTs were grouped to obtain their monthly frequencies, and used as potential independent variables in a linear least-square non-negative regression model with a forward stepwise selection. Results show the impact of each WT on precipitation in the Iberian Peninsula with a spatial resolution which had never been achieved before and additionally were obtained on a monthly scale highlighting the large seasonal cycle observed in each class, and including significantly different patterns in winter and summer. Nevertheless, results confirm that most of the precipitation in the Iberian Peninsula is produced by just a few WTs, with W, SW and C being the most influential. The association between WTs and precipitation is more robust in winter months and for the western IP areas, while it is lower during summer months and for the eastern IP areas. Spatial analysis revealed that precipitation on the Mediterranean coastland is mostly related with easterly flows (NE, E, SE and their hybrid counterparts), while on the Cantabrian coastland. N and NW flows are the most influential WTs. In general, cyclone-related types are the least frequent ones and also the most efficient in generating precipitation; while anticyclone-related types have the highest frequencies, but also the lowest contribution to total monthly rainfall in the Iberian Peninsula. ABSTRACT This study provides a thorough assessment of recent changes in near-surface air temperature in mainland Portugal at both the local and regional level, focusing on extreme events (maximum and minimum) at a seasonal scale. It examines trends in selected specific indices that are calculated from daily air temperature data from 23 measuring stations scattered across the territory, recorded between 1941 and 2006. The results show overall warming trends over mainland Portugal that are consistent with the dominant global warming and reflect an increase in both maximum and minimum air temperature. When we split the study period into two sub-periods, 1945-1975 and 1976-2006, the partial trend analysis reveals that the first sub-period is mostly characterized by cooling followed by an even stronger tendency towards warmer benchmarks in all the indices evaluated, in particular for the warm-related temperature extremes in spring and summer. The changes observed in seasonal patterns confirm the well-known asymmetries in the climate in mainland Portugal and suggest that they are likely to be aggravated. There are changes associated with extreme temperatures, in particular, the significant increase in the frequency and duration of heat waves, and the increase in the frequency of hot days and tropical nights, especially in spring and summer; moreover there is a significant decrease in the frequency of cold waves and frost days. Teleconnections associated with changing patterns of temperature are also investigated. The results show that, over mainland Portugal, cold-related air temperature extremes have been associated with the East Atlantic mode in autumn, whereas warm-related extremes have been associated with the Scandinavia teleconnection pattern in spring, summer and autumn. However, the most prominent Northern Hemisphere pattern, the North Atlantic Oscillation, exerts limited influence, which is felt mostly in winter and spring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An analysis of the frequency of cyclones and surface wind velocity for the Euro–Atlantic sector is performed by means of an objective methodology. Monthly and seasonal trends of cyclones and wind speed magnitude are computed and trends between 1960 and 2000 evaluated. Results reveal a significant frequency decrease (increase) in the western Mediterranean (Greenland and Scandinavia), particularly in December, February, and March. Seasonal and monthly analysis of wind magnitude trends shows similar spatial patterns. We show that these changes in the frequency of low-pressure centers and the associated wind patterns are partially responsible for trends in the significant height of waves. Throughout the extended winter months (October–March), regions with positive (negative) wind magnitude trends, of up to 5 cm/s/year, often correspond to regions of positive (negative) significant wave height trends. The cyclone and wind speed trends computed for January–March are well matched by the corresponding trends in significant wave height, with February being the month with the highest trends (negative south of lat 50°N up to −3 cm/year, and positive up to 5 cm/year just north of Scotland). Trends in European precipitation are assessed using the Climatic Research Unit data set. The results of the assessment emphasize the link with the corresponding tendencies of cyclone frequencies. Finally, it is shown that these changes are associated, to a large extent, with the preferred phases of major large-scale atmospheric circulation modes, particularly with the North Atlantic Oscillation, the eastern Atlantic pattern, and the Scandinavian pattern. Atmospheric rivers (ARs) play a vital role in shaping the hydroclimate of many regions globally, and can substantially impact water resource management, emergency response planning, and other socioeconomic entities. The second International Atmospheric Rivers Conference took place at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, during 25–28 June, 2018, in La Jolla, California, USA. It was sponsored by the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E). A total of 120 people attended the Conference with 94 abstracts submitted and 30 participating students. In addition to the conference, the Student Forecasting Workshop was organised in the same week. During this workshop, students were exposed to AR forecasting tools, and learned examples of how these tools could be used to make decisions for various applications. The main goals of this conference were to bring together experts from across the fields of hydrology, atmospheric, oceanic, and polar sciences, as well as water management, civil engineering, and ecology to advance the state of AR science and to explore the future directions for the field. The conference was organised into traditional oral and poster presentations, along with panel discussions and Breakout Groups. This format allowed enhanced interaction between participants, driving progress within the scientific community and the enhanced communication of societal needs by various stakeholders. Several emerging topics of research were highlighted, including subseasonal‐to‐seasonal (S2S) prediction of ARs and an overview of the AR Reconnaissance campaign. In addition to providing a forum to disseminate and debate new results from scientific talks and posters, the conference was equally effective and useful in linking scientists to users and decision‐makers that require improved knowledge on ARs to manage resources and prepare for hazards.
