To develop the drugs as a second line of preventing a serious form of illness, blocking the interaction between a receptor‐binding domain (RBD) in the SARS‐CoV‐2 S‐protein (spike protein) with human ACE2 (Angiotensin converting enzyme 2) can potentially prevent SARS‐CoV‐2 S‐protein from interacting with host cells. In this research, 20 drug compounds are examined using docking to identify potential drugs that can bind at the common level of the RBD‐ACE2 complex and compared the results with two standard drugs offered (Favipiravir, Arbidol). Among 20 drugs, Ozanimod and Prazosin are selected as the best drug compounds by reviewing the docking scores and drug interaction with the active position of RBD‐ACE2. The results of molecular dynamics simulation showed that Ozanimod with binding energy of −14.24 kcal mol−1 has a higher binding capability than Prazosin with binding energy of −9.55 kcal mol−1 to block the interaction between spike protein RBD and human ACE2 enzyme. Ozanimod effectively binds to the S‐protein RBD and inhibits residues critical to the spike and ACE2 protein interaction. Aims/Introduction: A debate exists on the relation of adverse pregnancy outcomes with glycemic levels in early pregnancy. We aimed to investigate the association of maternal characteristics including post‐load glucose and first‐trimester HbA1c test results with adverse pregnancy outcomes in women without gestational diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: A dataset (January 2011 and September 2017) from a hospital prenatal clinic was explored to find the important predictors of adverse pregnancy outcomes using maternal characteristics and glucose assessments in mothers without gestational diabetes. We used two machine learning algorithms to capture nonlinearity in selecting important maternal characteristics and developed predictive models for each outcome. In total, 1,618 pregnant women were included in the analytic dataset with a mean (SD) age of 26.8 (3.5) years and gravida of 1.7 (0.9). Results: Important associations were detected between maternal features and primary cesarean section, fetal distress, premature rupture of membranes, macrosomia, small or large for gestational age, APGAR <7 at 1 or 5 min, hyperbilirubinemia, and poly‐ or oligo‐hydramnios. Overall, the predictive models showed good performance and large areas under the curves (0.732, 0.765, 0.646, 0.651, 0.730, 0.646, 0.684, 0.716, and 0.678, respectively). Specifically, they had high positive likelihood ratios. Conclusions: High glucose levels were associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Post‐load glucose was the most reliable test for predicting the outcomes. Overall, fasting blood sugar was of more predictive value than HbA1c. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of 12 weeks of aerobic exercise (AT) and saffron supplementation on hemostasis, inflammatory markers, and insulin resistance in obese women diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D). A total of 44 women with T2D (mean age: 54.12 ± 5.63 years, mean BMI: 31.15 ± 1.50 kg/m2, HbA1c: 85 ± 4.2 mmol/mol) were included in a randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study. We were randomly assigned to one of four groups (n = 11 per group): saffron + training (ST), placebo + training (PT), saffron supplement (SS), and placebo (P). The ST and PT groups completed 12 weeks of AT (three sessions per week of mild to moderate intensity). The ST and SS groups were administered a daily dose of 200 mg of saffron powder for 12 weeks. Fasting blood samples were collected 48 h before the first AT session and/or nutritional supplementation and 48 h after the last AT session and/or nutritional supplementation. Post‐evaluation, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance value (HOMA‐IR, p < 0.001) and serum levels of glucose (p < 0.001), fibrinogen (FIB, p < 0.001), homocysteine (HCY, p < 0.001), interleukin‐6 (IL‐6, p < 0.001), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα, p < 0.001) showed significant reduction in the ST, PT, and SS groups compared to the P group (p < 0.05). In particular, the ST group showed a more significant reduction in all variables compared to the PT and SS groups (p < 0.05). Our results suggest that a 12‐week intervention with AT and saffron supplementation can independently improve markers related to hemostasis, inflammation, and insulin resistance. However, their combination showed the greatest effectiveness on the above markers. The Google Earth Engine (GEE) was used to investigate the performance of the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) soil temperature (ST) data against observed ST from 13 synoptic stations over a semiarid region in Iran. Three‐hourly ST data were collected and analyzed in two depths (0–10 cm; 40–100 cm) and 5 years. In each depth, GLDAS‐Noah ST data were evaluated for daily minimum, maximum, and average ST (i.e., Tmin, Tmax, and Tavg). Based on the correlation coefficient, Kling–Gupta Efficiency, and Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency the overall performance of the GLDAS‐Noah is 0.96, 0.66, and 0.79 for Tmin; 0.97, 0.84, and 0.89 for Tavg; and 0.95, 0.89, and 0.89 for Tmax, respectively in the first layer. Likewise, 0.97, 0.85, and 0.86 for Tmin; 0.97, 0.77, and 0.80 for Tavg; and 0.97, 0.69, and 0.69 for Tmax are obtained in the second layer. However, there is a significant negative bias which tends to underestimate ST in the two investigated layers, given by an average bias over all the stations analyzed of −24%, −12%, and −5% for Tmin, Tavg, and Tmax in the first layer, and average bias of −8%, −13%, and −17% for Tmin, Tavg, and Tmax in the second layer. This study reveals that GLDAS‐Noah‐derived ST can be used in arid regions where little or no observation data is available. Scaling in insect wings is a complex phenomenon that seems pivotal in maintaining wing functionality. In this study, the relationship between wing size and the size, location, and shape of wing cells in dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata) is investigated, aiming to address the question of how these factors are interconnected. To this end, WingGram, the recently developed computer‐vision‐based software, is used to extract the geometric features of wing cells of 389 dragonflies and damselfly wings from 197 species and 16 families. It has been found that the cell length of the wings does not depend on the wing size. Despite the wide variation in wing length (8.42 to 56.5 mm) and cell length (0.1 to 8.5 mm), over 80% of the cells had a length ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 mm, which was previously identified as the critical crack length of the membrane of locust wings. An isometric scaling of cells is also observed with maximum size in each wing, which increased as the size increased. Smaller cells tended to be more circular than larger cells. The results have implications for bio‐mimetics, inspiring new materials and designs for artificial wings with potential applications in aerospace engineering and robotics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Among the potent anticancer agents, methotrexate (MTX) is very effective against many different types of cancer cells. Implementation of chemotherapy along with radiotherapy, known as synchronous chemoradiotherapy, can augment the treatment efficacy. In the present study self‐assembled MTX conjugated mPEG‐PCL copolymer encapsulating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) hybrid (mPEG‐PCL‐MTX@Au) was developed as both drug carrier and radiosensitizer. After successful synthesis and characterization of hybrids with different techniques such as hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (HNMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet–visible (UV‐Vis), x‐ray diffraction analysis (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The anticancer activity of designed system was evaluated with a series of biological assays. TEM image indicate that AuNPs encapsulated by self‐assembled mPEG‐PCL‐MTX NPs. It was found that the micelle of that shown in the TEM image contains nine gold nanoparticles (NPs). The hydrodynamic diameter of mPEG‐PCL‐MTX@Au was 81.40 ± 8 nm. As a result, at acidic pH, which simulates tumor tissue, the most drug release is done compared to neutral pH conditions, which are the physiological conditions of the body. About 70% of the drug was released in acidic pH, while in alkaline pH, it was about 35%. The effectiveness of cancer treatment was significantly improved by using developed NPs, which introduces simultaneous chemotherapy and radiotherapy. MTT and apoptosis assays show that the mPEG‐PCL‐MTX@Au as the final formulation improves the radiosensitivity of the 4T1 breast cancer cells and also remarkably kills breast cancer. Furthermore, the result revealed that designed hybrid system extremely able to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) within cancer cells. These results offer powerful evidence for the potential capability of mPEG‐PCL‐MTX@Au in radiosensitization of malignant tumors and opens up a new avenue of research in this area. Key Clinical Message: Vaginal cuff dehiscence post‐hysterectomy is rare yet significant. Early recognition and prompt surgical intervention are crucial to prevent complications like bowel infarction. Consider second‐look laparotomy in cases of uncertain bowel viability. Vaginal cuff dehiscence (VCD) is a rare but potentially life‐threatening complication following a hysterectomy characterized by the separation of the vaginal vault. This condition, which may result in vaginal evisceration (VE), presents a significant risk of pelvic contents, particularly the small bowel, protruding into the vagina. Early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention are paramount to prevent severe complications, including bowel infarction, obstruction, and peritonitis. Although VCD and VE are rare, they require urgent surgical management to avoid adverse outcomes. We reported a case of small bowel evisceration in a woman with a history of total abdominal hysterectomy 6 months ago. VCD and VE are very rare but life‐threatening complications of hysterectomy. Discussing the symptoms with patients who have multiple risk factors is crucial to avoid severe sequels following hysterectomy. Based on our experience, performing a second‐look laparotomy is a reliable approach to ensure the viability of the intestinal loop. However, it will likely increase the risk of infection. It has been reported that lipophilic statins such as atorvastatin can more readily penetrate into β‐cells and reach the mitochondria, resulting in mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, decrease in insulin release. Many studies have shown that natural products can protect mitochondrial dysfunction induced by drug in different tissue. We aimed to explore mitochondrial protection potency of hesperidin, vanillic acid, and sinapic acid as natural compounds against mitochondrial dysfunction induced by atorvastatin in pancreas isolated mitochondria. Mitochondria were isolated form rat pancreas and directly treated with toxic concentration of atorvastatin (500 µM) in presence of various concentrations hesperidin, vanillic acid, and sinapic acid (1, 10, and 100 µM) separately. Mitochondrial toxicity parameters such as the reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, succinate dehydrogenases (SDH) activity, mitochondrial swelling, depletion of glutathione (GSH), mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) collapse, and malondialdehyde (MDA) production were measured. Our findings demonstrated that atorvastatin directly induced mitochondrial toxicity at concentration of 500 μM and higher in pancreatic mitochondria. Except MDA, atorvastatin caused significantly reduction in SDH activity, mitochondrial swelling, ROS formation, depletion of GSH, and collapse of MMP. While, our data showed that all three protective compounds at low concentrations ameliorated atorvastatin‐induced mitochondrial dysfunction with the increase of SDH activity, improvement of mitochondrial swelling, MMP collapse and mitochondrial GSH, and reduction of ROS formation. We can conclude that hesperidin, vanillic acid, and sinapic acid can directly reverse the toxic of atorvastatin in rat pancreas isolated mitochondria, which may be beneficial for protection against diabetogenic‐induced mitochondrial dysfunction in pancreatic β‐cells. A new strategy for a catalytic C−C bond forming cascade reaction comprising acetal hydrolysis and Knoevenagel condensation is presented here. The heterogeneous nanocatalyst is prepared by immobilizing an ionic liquid on the surface of highly monodisperse silica nanoparticles. This work is the first example of showing that there is no need to use bifunctional acid‐base catalysts for a cascade reaction including the hydrolysis of benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal to benzaldehyde and the subsequent Knoevenagel condensation of the resulting benzaldehyde with malononitrile. It is shown here that these reactions can proceed smoothly with a mono‐functional heterogeneous catalyst that contains a neutral ionic liquid. It has been proposed that such a neutral ionic liquid can "switch on" to an acidic catalyst in conjunction with water. The selected ionic liquid has potentially biodegradability characteristics, which is an important issue to achieve a sustainable catalyst. The simple procedure for preparing both the ionic liquid and the monodisperse silica nanoparticles provides opportunities for a large‐scale synthesis of the catalyst. Background: Astaxanthin is the most prevalent carotenoid in the marine environment and is widely used as an additive in formulated aquafeeds. Objectives: A 60‐day feeding trial was conducted to consider the effect of dietary nanoliposome‐coated astaxanthin (NA) on haematological parameters, serum antioxidant activities and immune responses of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Methods: A total of 450 healthy fish weighing 31.00 ± 2.09 g were randomly assigned in triplicate (30 fish per replicate) to 5 dietary treatments: 0 (control), 25.00, 50.00, 75.00, and 100.00 mg kg−1 NA. Results: Fish fed the diet supplemented with 50.00 mg kg−1 NA exhibited the highest values of red blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin and haematocrit of 1.64 ± 0.01 × 106 mm−3, 5.54 ± 0.21 × 103 mm−3, 8.73 ± 0.24 g dL−1 and 46.67% ± 0.88%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those fed the basal diet (p < 0.05). The lowest and highest percentages of lymphocytes (67.67% ± 0.33%) and neutrophils (27.33% ± 1.20%) were also obtained in fish fed 50.00 mg kg−1 NA compared to those fed the basal diet (p < 0.05). Fish receiving diet supplemented with 50.00 mg kg−1 NA revealed the highest serum activity in superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, lysozyme and alternative complement and the lowest level of total cholesterol, cortisol, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase than fish receiving the basal diet (p < 0.05). Serum immunoglobulin (Ig) and ACH50 contents significantly increased with increasing dietary NA supplementation to the highest values of 43.17 ± 1.46 and 293.33 ± 2.03 U mL−1, respectively, in fish fed diet supplemented with 50 mg kg−1 NA (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Supplementation of NA in rainbow trout diet at 50 mg kg−1 exhibited a positive effect on haematological parameters, antioxidant capacity and immune responses. Administration of such dosage can enhance rainbow trout immune responses against unfavourable or stressful conditions, for example disease outbreaks, hypoxic condition, thermal stress and sudden osmotic fluctuations, which usually happen in an intensive culture system. Background and Aims: In Iran, few studies have addressed the moderating effect of gender on determinants of quality of life. This study aimed to determine the effect of social trust, physical activity, and sense of happiness on the perceived quality of life, considering the moderating role of gender. Methods: This was a population‐based cross‐sectional study. The statistical population were men and women aged 16 years and above in five western provinces of Iran. The final sample size was estimated to be 1268 people calculated through the correlation coefficient estimation formula, and finally 1185 questionnaires received. Data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS software. Results: The mean score of quality of life among women was significantly higher than that of men (p < 0.001). The direct standardized coefficient showed that the sense of happiness (β = 0.40), social trust (β = 0.20), and physical activity (β = 0.12) had a significant effect on the perceived quality of life (p < 0.001). Also, gender had a moderating role in the relationship between sense of happiness and perceived quality of life (z‐score = 3.246, p < 0.001). Totally, 21% of the changes in perceived quality of life were explained by three main variables. The main variables were stronger explanatory factors in men (R = 0.26) than in women (R = 0.17). Conclusions: The final model showed that sense of happiness had the most direct effect on the perceived quality of life, moderated by gender. Considering that the quality of life among men was lower than that among women and the direct effect of happiness on quality of life was more among men than that among women, it is suggested that gender‐based health promotion interventions with an emphasis on men be carried out to strengthen the sources of happiness to improve quality of life. Continuous crystallization of pharmaceuticals has been in the center of attention during the past two decades, with a more focus on the large‐scale production of active pharmaceutical ingredients. The increasing demand for pharmaceuticals requires high‐throughput production of drug crystals with different solubilities, stabilities, shapes, habits, polymorphs, and size distributions. With numerous advantages including low cost, ease of scale‐up, and superior control over polymorph and size distribution of drug crystals, antisolvent crystallization is one of the most promising crystallization methods recently attempted. However, it fails to deliver the required characteristic where the crystal systems tend to grow and for the preparation of metastable polymorphs. This review focuses on the most recent efforts to tackle these drawbacks by coupling antisolvent crystallization with cooling, supercritical‐assisted, microfluidics‐assisted, and membrane‐assisted crystallization. This systematic review aims to provide a concise summary of each coupled antisolvent technique and their positive and negative aspects. This review can be used as a guideline for pharmacist, biologists, and chemists, who are interested in the crystal engineering of pharmaceuticals to pave the way for further developments in this field. This article introduces WingSegment, a MATLAB app‐designed tool employing a hybrid approach of computer vision and graph theory for precise insect wing image segmentation. WingSegment detects cells, junctions, Pterostigma, and venation patterns, measuring geometric features and generating Voronoi patterns. The tool utilizes region‐growing, thinning, and Dijkstra's algorithms for boundary detection, junction identification, and vein path extraction. It provides histograms and box plots of geometric features, facilitating comprehensive wing analysis. WingSegment's efficiency is validated through comparisons with established tools and manual measurements, demonstrating accurate results. The tool further enables exporting detected boundaries as FreeCAD macro files for 3D modeling and printing, supporting finite element analysis. Beyond advancing insect wing morphology understanding, WingSegment holds broader implications for diverse planar structures, including leaves and geocells. This tool not only enhances automated geometric analysis and 3D model generation in insect wing studies but also contributes to the broader advancement of analysis, 3D printing, and modeling technologies across various planar structures. Explicit fracture models often use analytical solutions for predicting flow in fractured media, usually assuming uniform fluid viscosity for simplicity. This assumption, however, can be inaccurate as fluid viscosity varies due to factors like composition, temperature, and dissolved substances. Our study, recognizing these discrepancies, abandons this uniform viscosity assumption for a more realistic model of variable viscosity flow, focusing on viscous displacement scenarios. This includes instances like injecting viscous surfactants for hydrocarbon recovery in fractured reservoirs or soil decontamination. This presents a significant challenge, enhancing our understanding of transport within fractures, mainly governed by advection. Our study centers on a low‐permeability rock matrix intersected by two fractures with variable apertures. We employ two methods: an analytical approach with a new solution and numerical simulations with two distinct in‐house codes, discretizing both the rock matrix and fractures with two‐dimensional triangular elements. The first code uses a Discontinuous Galerkin finite element method, while the second utilizes a finite‐volume method, allowing a comprehensive comparison of solutions. Additionally, we investigate parameter identifiability, like fracture apertures and viscosity ratios, using breakthrough curves from our analytical solution, applying the Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique. We develop a probabilistic approach to map parametric uncertainty to output state uncertainty in first‐order hyperbolic conservation laws. We analyze this problem for nonlinear immiscible two‐phase transport in heterogeneous porous media in the presence of a stochastic velocity field. The uncertainty in the velocity field can arise from incomplete descriptions of either porosity field, injection flux, or both. This uncertainty leads to spatiotemporal uncertainty in the saturation field. Given information about spatial/temporal statistics of spatially correlated heterogeneity, we leverage the method of distributions to derive deterministic equations that govern the evolution of pointwise cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of saturation for a vertical reservoir, while handling the manipulation of multiple shocks arising due to buoyancy forces. Unlike the Buckley‐Leverett equation, the equation describing the fine‐grained CDF is linear in space and time. Ensemble averaging of the fine‐grained CDF results in the CDF of saturation. Thus, we give routes to circumventing the computational cost of Monte Carlo simulations (MCS), while obtaining a pointwise description of the saturation field. We conduct a set of numerical experiments for one‐dimensional transport, and compare the obtained saturation CDFs, against those obtained using MCS as our reference solution, and the statistical moment equation method. This comparison demonstrates that the CDF equations remain accurate over a wide range of statistical properties, that is, standard deviation and correlation length of the underlying random fields, whereas the corresponding low‐order statistical moment equations significantly deviate from the MCS results, except for very small values of standard deviation and correlation length. Background: Treatment of infraorbital dark circles and under‐eye puffiness is challenging due to its multifactorial nature and lack of broadly applicable, effective treatments. A daily skincare treatment option that is multimodal, effective, and tolerable across a broad patient population is an unmet need. Aim: A multicorrective topical eye cream (MTEC) formulated with Tetrahexyldecyl (THD) ascorbate (vitamin C), prebiotic Inula Helenium, bioavailable peptides, botanical extracts, chrysin, and caffeine is hypothesized to improve the appearance of infraorbital dark circles and under‐eye puffiness by targeting microvasculature congestion and permeability, melanin accumulation and hemoglobin degradation‐related pigmentation, and skin health. Methods: An IRB approved, open‐label, 12‐week clinical study set out to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of the MTEC across a broad patient population including varying ethnicities and Fitzpatrick Skin Types (FST). Female subjects (n = 40) ages 35–60 years old, with moderate‐to‐severe under‐eye dark circles, moderate under‐eye puffiness, and mild‐to‐moderate fine lines were enrolled into the study. Objective (Chromameter, VISIA® imaging, and Laser Doppler) and subjective assessments (clinical grading and self‐assessment questionnaire) were conducted at baseline and post‐baseline timepoints. Results: Thirty‐seven subjects completed the study, and the MTEC efficaciously demonstrated short‐term and long‐term improvements in objective and subjective assessments across a broad patient population. Specifically, the MTEC demonstrated significant improvement of infraorbital dark circles, mainly by the reduction in microvasculature congestion and permeability, melanin, and hemoglobin degradation‐related pigmentation. Background: Functionalization of wound dressing is one of the main approaches for promoting wound healing in skin wound management. In this study, our aim is to fabricate a bio‐functionalized hydrocolloid wound dressing. Methods: The extracellular matrix (ECM) was extracted from human placental tissue. A hydrocolloid film was fabricated using Na‐CMC, pectin, gelatin, styrene‐isoprene‐styrene adhesive, glycerol, and 0.5%–2.5% powdered ECM. A polyurethane film and a release liner were used in the hydrocolloid/ECM films. The mechanical, adhesion, swelling rate, and integrity of the films were investigated. Cell proliferation, adhesion, and migration assays, as well as, SEM and FTIR spectroscopy were also conducted. Macroscopic and microscopic evaluations of wound healing process and formation of blood vessels were conducted in mouse animal models. Results: We successfully fabricated a three‐layered ECM‐functionalized hydrocolloid dressing with a water vapor transmission rate of 371 g/m2/day and an adhesion peel strength of 176 KPa. Cellular adhesion, proliferation and migration were promoted by ECM. In the animal tests, ECM‐functionalized hydrocolloids significantly improved wound closure and re‐epithelialization at days 14 and 21. Background and Aims: Congenital myogenic ptosis (CMP), chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO), and facial nerve palsy (FNP) are among the disorders which can seriously affect the blink dynamics of patients. Smartphone videography is a simple, convenient, and inexpensive way to capture eyelid movement. This study has measured and compared a variety of blink dynamics in these patients compared to healthy controls using 2‐dimensional smartphone videography to enhance the utility of this method in both clinical and research settings. Methods: A total of 30 adult participants with a complaint of impaired eyelid movements including 10 with CMP, 10 with CPEO, and 10 with unilateral FNP, as well as 10 healthy controls were recruited. Using a smartphone camera with a resolution of 240 frames per second in 720 p, various blink dynamics were measured. Results: All case groups had significantly lower values of peak and average closing velocities, average opening velocity, and palpebral aperture and significantly higher values of eyelid closing duration, compared to controls. FNP participants also had significantly lower values in the full blink rate and peak opening velocity (POV) measures, and CPEO patients showed significantly lower values in the POV. Other measures were not statistically significantly different compared to healthy controls. Conclusion: Our results indicated that all patients with CMP, FNP, and CPEO had different blinking dynamics compared to healthy controls, which is consistent with previous studies. Smartphone videography has achieved sufficient resolution and frame‐rate to provide valuable information and anatomic details for clinical and research purposes. Marketing researchers have extensively studied the causal influence of emotional state on food consumption. The present study offers a comprehensive systematic review of 111 articles related to the effect of emotions on unhealthy consumption over the past three decades—from 1993 to 2023. Applying the bibliometric coupling method identifies four main research themes in the marketing discipline: emotional eating: food as a coping mechanism, emotional eating: food as a reward, emotional eating: emotion as a multidimensional structure, and emotional eating: moderating effects of food sensory cues. Theoretical richness within each cluster is presented. In addition, the findings indicate that the marketing discipline has mainly relied on the proximate reasoning approach—explaining the causation and development of consumers' behavior—to describe the association between emotional state and food consumption choices. To broaden the scope of each research theme, we adopt the ultimate approach—explaining why a behavior exists—and focus on why unhealthy food consumption becomes a pattern of behavior. Key Clinical Message: Although rectal foreign bodies are rare presentations, this condition should be considered in patients with preanal pain, lower pelvic pain, or rectal bleeding. Rectal foreign bodies are a rare occurrence and can pose a therapeutic challenge for surgeons. These objects may be inserted through the anus or ingested orally. This study presents a retrospective review of all cases of trapped rectal foreign bodies at a single university hospital. From 2001 to 2020, twelve cases of rectal foreign bodies were diagnosed and treated at Ghaem Hospital in Mashhad. Demographic information, type of foreign body, clinical presentation, and removal method were collected retrospectively. All cases of rectal foreign bodies entered through the anus. Twelve cases involved male patients, with a mean age of 47.5 years (ranging from 24 to 70 years), and two cases involved female patients, with a mean age of 29.5 years (ranging from 29 to 30 years). Patients' main complaint was defecation disorder, accounting for 57% of cases. The types of rectal foreign bodies included two body sprays, two wood pieces, two glass bottles, glasses, eggplants, cucumbers, squash, and anal dilators. One case involved surgical gas. In five cases, rectal foreign bodies were removed under general anesthesia through the rectum by dilatation. Rectal foreign bodies were removed by rectosigmoidoscopy in three cases, forceps in two cases, and abdominal maneuvers in one case. Only one case required laparotomy. Minor complications such as scratches or small mucosal tears were observed in some cases after removal of the foreign body, but no deaths were reported. Although rectal foreign bodies are rare, this condition should be considered in patients with preanal pain, lower pelvic pain, or rectal bleeding when no justification for recent endoscopic examinations is found. Most rectal foreign bodies are removed through the anus under appropriate anesthesia. Rectosigmoidoscopy is a good alternative if needed. Background: Despite the confirmed association between higher BMI with increased risk of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the association between obesity with mortality in critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) is not clear. The present study aimed to investigate the association between obesity with treatment duration, ICU length of stay, and the risk of death in critically ill patients with COVID‐19. Methods: This case–control study was performed on 223 patients with COVID‐19 including 148 surviving patients as the control group and 75 eventually dead patients as the case group in Rasht, Iran. Data on demographic factors, comorbidities, anthropometric measurements, the length of hospitalization and the mortality were obtained from patients' medical records. Results: The mortality rate was significantly associated with weight (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.002–1.083, p =.04), but not with BMI after adjustments for age, gender, length of stay in ICU, chronic diseases and smoking. The results did not change after further adjustments for biochemical and pathological factors. Conclusions: Weight was positively associated with mortality after controlling for confounding variables. This systematic review and dose–response meta‐analysis examined the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) following dietary fiber intake. Relevant articles were retrieved from a variety of databases, including Scopus, Embase, and Medline, until March 2023. Spirometry was the most frequently used method for determining the presence of COPD. Based on the search, there were a total of 213,912 participants across five separate studies. Random effects model was used to combine the data and a dose–response analysis was further conducted. Five distinct cohort studies were identified. Based on highest versus lowest analysis, there was an inverse correlation between the intake of total fiber (RR, 0.72; 95%, CI: 0.64–0.80), cereal fiber (RR: 0.76, 95% CI 0.68, 0.86), and fruit fiber (RR: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.68, 0.83). Although this result was not significant for vegetable fiber (RR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.84–1.07). Dose–response analysis revealed that daily increase of 10 g of total dietary fiber, cereal fiber, or fruit fiber reduced the risk of COPD by 26%, 21%, and 37%, respectively. The ROBINS‐E tool classified all cohort studies as having a moderate risk of bias. Total fiber, cereal fiber, and fruit fiber intake were found to have low credibility using the NutriGrade tool. Additionally, there is a lack of scientific evidence supporting the use of vegetable fiber. Larger, more comprehensive studies are required to confirm these findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ability to fly is crucial for migratory insects. Consequently, the accumulation of damage on the wings over time can affect survival, especially for species that travel long distances. We examined the frequency of irreversible wing damage in the migratory butterfly Vanessa cardui to explore the effect of wing structure on wing damage frequency, as well as the mechanisms that might mitigate wing damage. An exceptionally high migration rate driven by high precipitation levels in their larval habitats in the winter of 2018–2019 provided us with an excellent opportunity to collect data on the frequency of naturally occurring wing damage associated with long‐distance flights. Digital images of 135 individuals of V. cardui were collected and analyzed in Germany. The results show that the hindwings experienced a greater frequency of damage than the forewings. Moreover, forewings experienced more severe damage on the lateral margin, whereas hindwings experienced more damage on the trailing margin. The frequency of wing margin damage was higher in the painted lady butterfly than in the migrating monarch butterfly and in the butterfly Pontia occidentalis following artificially induced wing collisions. The results of this study could be used in future comparative studies of patterns of wing damage in butterflies and other insects. Variations in toxicity and treatment response are observed among patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) despite similar clinicopathologic characteristics that are attributed to gene polymorphisms. This study aimed to review the literatures about the impact of gene polymorphisms on post‐treatment toxicity and treatment response in HNSCCs. A systematic search of all original articles about impact of gene polymorphisms on toxicity and response rate in HNSCCs was done till September 2021 using Google Scholar and PubMed databases. Of 15 345 initial searched articles, 25 articles were finally found to be eligible for inclusion in this review. A total of 41 genes and 69 polymorphisms were examined in these studies. Twenty‐nine genes with 42 polymorphisms for treatment response and 21 genes with 33 polymorphisms were examined for post‐treatment toxicity. Because each of the Asp312Asn ERCC2, IIe105Val GSTP1, and Phe31Ile AurkA polymorphisms has been associated with significant results in two studies, these polymorphisms are more likely to be associated with a treatment response. In the same way, the R521K EGFR polymorphism is more likely to be associated with a post‐treatment toxicity. Because some polymorphisms such as R521K EGFR, *4 or *6 CYP2D6, and rs396991 FcγRIIIa have been associated with significant results in one study (without contradictory study), it is likely that they will be associated with a treatment response by further studies. To date, lack of functional hydrogel inks has limited 3D printing applications in tissue engineering. This study developed a series of photocurable hydrogel inks based on chitooligosaccharide (COS)‐polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) for extrusion‐based 3D printing of bone tissue scaffolds. The scaffolds were prepared by aza‐Michael addition of COS and PEGDA followed by photopolymerisation of unreacted PEGDA. The hydrogel inks showed sufficient shear thinning properties required for extrusion 3D printing. The printed scaffolds exhibited excellent shape fidelity and fine microstructure with a resolution of 250 μm. By increasing the COS content, the swelling ratio of the scaffolds decreased, while the compressive strength increased. 3D printed COS‐PEGDA scaffolds showed high viability of human bone mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. In addition, scaffolds containing 2 wt% COS showed significantly higher alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium deposition, and bioactivity in simulated body fluid compared to the control (PEGDA). The analytical solution for a one‐dimensional and steady‐state model is proposed to investigate the diffusion of VOCs within landfill capillary cover systems under unsaturated water flow and stable conditions. Examples of coupled water flow and VOCs diffusion are evaluated by the proposed analytical solution to discuss the effects of the evaporation rate and clay thickness. The proficiency of the unsaturated cover system in minimising VOC emissions was also investigated. It was found that the non‐uniform distribution of water content can cause one order of magnitude reductions in the effective diffusion coefficient of VOCs, resulting in the attenuation of VOCs in the cover system. The concentration profile of VOCs is lower for the case with a larger evaporation rate. Ignoring the non‐uniform distribution of water content induced by water flow would underestimate the surface flux of VOCs by a factor of 1.8. The water content and VOC concentration in the cover system can be effectively diminished with the thickness of the clayey layer increasing. The surface flux of VOCs is considerably decreased with increasing thickness of clayey layer. Increasing the thickness of clayey layer from 0.2 to 1 m leads to a reduction in the surface flux of VOCs by a factor of 2.9. The sensitivity analysis provides further insights into the critical role of water flow in affecting VOC transport through the unsaturated cover system. Background: Perioperative chemotherapy/chemoradiation is standard in esophageal/gastric/gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) effect in setting of metastatic and postoperatively. This study is to assess ICI + chemotherapy perioperatively. Methods: Patients with locally advanced (T1N1‐3M0 or T2‐3NanyM0) potentially resectable esophageal/gastric/GEJ adenocarcinoma by PET/EUS/CT and staging‐laparoscopy, were treated preoperative 4 cycles mFOLFOX6 (Oxaliplatin 85 mg/m2/Leucovorin 400 mg/m2/5‐FU bolus 400 mg/m2 then infusion 2400 mg/m2 for 46 h q2weeks) and 3 cycles pembrolizumab (200 mg q3week). Those without distal disease post‐neoadjuvant and eligible for resection underwent surgery. Postoperative treatment was initiated at 4–8 weeks with 4 cycles mFOLFOX and 12 cycles pembrolizumab. The primary objective is pathological response (ypRR with tumor regression score, TRS ≤2). The expression of ICI‐related markers PD‐L1 (CPS), CD8, and CD20 were analyzed before and after preoperative therapy. Results: Thirty‐seven patients completed the preoperative treatment. Twenty‐nine patients had curative R0 resection. 6/29 (21%; 95% CI: 0.08–0.40) achieved ypCR with TRS 0 in resected patients. 26/29 (90%; 95% CI: 0.73–0.98) had ypRR with TRS ≤2. Twenty‐six patients finished adjuvant therapy with a median 36.3‐month follow‐up. Three patients had recurrence/metastatic disease (at 9‐, 10‐, 22 months enrollment) with one dead at 23 months, and two are still alive at 28 and 36.5 months. The remaining (23/26) are free of disease with 3 years DFS of 88.5% and 3 years OS of 92.3%. There were no unexpected toxicities. Preoperative ICI + chemotherapy enhanced immune responses significantly with increasing expression of PD‐L1 (CPS ≥10, p = 0.0078) and CD8 (>5%, p = 0.0059). Conclusions: The perioperative pembrolizumab and mFOLFOX combination in resectable esophageal/gastric/GEJ adenocarcinoma is very effective with 90% ypRR, 21% ypCR, and impressive long‐time survival benefits. Metamaterials with adjustable, sometimes unusual properties offer advantages over conventional materials with predefined mechanical properties in many technological applications. A group of metamaterials, called modular metamaterials or metastructures, are developed through the arrangement of multiple, mostly similar building blocks. These modular structures can be assembled using prefabricated modules and reconfigured to promote efficiency and functionality. Herein, a novel modular metastructure is developed by taking advantage of the high compliance of preprogrammable double‐spirals. First, the mechanical behavior of a four‐module metastructure under tension, compression, rotation, and sliding is simulated using the finite‐element method. Then, 3D printing and mechanical testing are used to illustrate the tunable anisotropic and asymmetric behavior of the spiral‐based metastructures in practice. The results show the simple reconfiguration of the presented metastructure toward the desired functions. The mechanical behavior of single double‐spirals and the characteristics that can be achieved through their combinations make our modular metastructure suitable for various applications in robotics, aerospace, and medical engineering. Reconfigurable continuum robots exhibit programmable interaction capability, enabling them to cope with challenges poorly addressed by conventional rigid robots. However, the regulation of the module type and/or sequence may result in time‐consuming and labor‐intensive problems. Therefore, in situ reconfiguration schemes are required to develop in a simple yet robust solution for continuum robot design. Herein, inspired by the structure characteristics of the seahorse tail, an original template based on a tensegrity building block (TBB) for creating an in situ reconfigurable continuum robotic paradigm is proposed. As the length of the stretchable struts in the TBB could be programmed, five typical homologous types from the template are derived. Then, ten TBBs into a continuum robot are assembled and the multi‐body dynamic framework is employed to develop a mechanical model for predicting the profile after deformation. Theoretical predictions demonstrate that the robotic shape can be customized in situ by switching the type of TBBs, without disassembling the robot. Furthermore, the tailored continuum robotic configurations are applied to conformally interact with the varying‐curvature objects. The experimental results suggest that the proposed programmable template offers a facile and rapid reconfiguration scheme for the continuum robots, which greatly improves the robotic interaction capability. Pichia pastoris is a commonly used microbial host for recombinant protein production. It is mostly cultivated in fed‐batch mode, in which the environment of the cell is continuously changing. Hence, it is vital to understand the influence of feeding strategy parameters on the intracellular reaction network to fine‐tune bioreactor performance. This study used dynamic flux balance analysis (DFBA) integrated with transcriptomics data to simulate the recombinant P. pastoris (Muts) growth during the induction phase for three fed‐batch strategies, conducted at constant specific growth rates (μ‐stat). The induction phase was split into equal time intervals, and the correlated reactions with protein yield were identified in the three fed‐batch strategies using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Subsequently, principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to cluster induction phase time intervals and identify the role of correlated reactions on metabolic differentiation of time intervals. It was found that increasing fluxes through the methanol dissimilation pathway increased protein yield. By adding a methanol assimilation pathway inhibitor (HgCl2) to the shake flask medium growing on glycerol: methanol mixture (10%: 90%, v/v), the protein titre increased by 60%. As per DFBA, the higher the methanol to biomass flux ratio (Rmeoh/Δx), the higher the protein yield. Finally, a novel feeding strategy was developed to increase the amount of Rmeoh/Δx compared to the three feeding strategies. The concentration of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH), used as the model protein, increased by 16% compared to the optimal culture result obtained previously (800 mg L−1 to 928 mg L−1), while production yield improved by 85% (24.8 mg gDCW−1 to 46 mg gDCW−1). Purpose: We investigated the design of a prompt gamma camera for real‐time dose delivery verification and the partial mitigation of range uncertainties. Methods: A slit slat (SS) camera was optimized using the trade‐off between the signal‐to‐noise ratio and spatial resolution. Then, using the GATE Monte Carlo package, the camera performances were estimated by means of target shifts, beam position quantification, changing the camera distance from the beam, and air cavity inserting. A homogeneous PMMA phantom and the air gaps induced PMMA phantom were used. The air gaps ranged from 5 mm to 30 mm by 5 mm increments were positioned in the middle of the beam range. To reduce the simulation time, phase space scoring was used. The batch method with five realizations was used for stochastic error calculations. Results: The system's detection efficiency was 1.1×10−4PGsEmittedPGs(1.8×10−5$1.1 \times {10}^{-4}\frac{{\rm PGs}}{{\rm Emitted}\ {\rm PGs}}\ (1.8 \times {10}^{-5}$ PGs/proton) for a 10 × 20 cm2 detector (source‐to‐collimator distance = 15.0 cm). Axial and transaxial resolutions were 23 mm and 18 mm, respectively. The SS camera estimated the range as 69.0 ± 3.4 (relative stochastic error 1‐sigma is 5%) and 67.6 ± 1.8 mm (2.6%) for the real range of 67.0 mm for 107 and 108 protons of 100 MeV, respectively. Considering 160 MeV, these values are 155.5 ± 3.1 (2%) and 152.2 ± 2.0 mm (1.3%) for the real range of 152.0 mm for 107 and 108 protons, respectively. Considering phantom shift, for a 100 MeV beam, the precision of the quantification (1‐sigma) in the axial and lateral phantom shift estimation is 2.6 mm and 1 mm, respectively. Accordingly, the axial and lateral quantification precisions were 1.3 mm and 1 mm for a 160 MeV beam, respectively. Furthermore, the quantification of an air gap formulated as gapdet=0.98×gapreal${{\rm gap}}_{det}=0.98 \times {{\rm gap}}_{{\rm real}}$, where gapdet${{\rm gap}}_{det}$ and gapreal are the estimated and real air gap, respectively. The precision of the air gap quantification is 1.6 mm (1 sigma). Moreover, 2D PG images show the trajectory of the proton beam through the phantom. Water striders (Gerris argentatus) move across the water surface by taking advantage of the surface tension, which supports their bodyweight without breaking. During locomotion, the midlegs are primarily responsible for generating thrust, whereas the other legs support the body. Although the aspects of standing and locomotion on the water surface are well understood, relatively fewer studies concerned the coordinated biomechanical movements of the legs. In order to maintain buoyancy of the body on the water surface, the leg positions must be adjusted to distribute the bodyweight appropriately. The present study investigates distribution of the bodyweight on the legs in relatively small water striders. We aimed to understand how loading on the legs changes during sculling that leads to sliding of the body on the water surface. The assistance of all legs at every moment enables the body to maintain its floating during standing and striding. Water striders can achieve a gentle striding through the midlegs driving phase in association with smooth load shifting among their legs, which are positioned in a specific configuration to support the insect on the water surface. Key Clinical Message: Connective tissue nevus is a hamartoma composed of excess amounts of one or several components of the dermis, such as collagen, elastin, and proteoglycans. This report introduces a 14‐year‐old girl with grouped flesh color papules and skin color nodules distributed unilaterally with a dermatomal pattern. These lesions involved more than one segment. Histopathology is the gold standard for diagnosing collagenoma and mucinous nevus. We reported the first case of mucinous nevus with multiple collagenoma that shows the specific clinical features. The emergence of multidrug‐resistant (MDR) strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae is associated with high morbidity and mortality due to limited treatment options. This study attempts to biologically synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and investigate their effect on expression levels of virulence and biofilm‐related genes in clinically isolated K. pneumoniae. In this study, biofilm formation ability, antibiotic resistance pattern, extended‐spectrum β‐lactamases (ESBLs), and carbapenemases production were investigated for 200 clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae using phenotypic methods. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect virulence and biofilm‐related genes, ESBL‐encoding genes, and carbapenem resistance genes. AgNPs were synthesized using the bio‐reduction method. The antibacterial effects of AgNPs were investigated by microdilution broth. In addition, the cytotoxic effect of AgNPs on L929 fibroblast cell lines was determined. The effects of AgNPs on K. pneumoniae virulence and biofilm‐related genes (fimH, rmpA, and mrkA) were determined using quantitative real‐time PCR. Thirty percent of the isolates produced a strong biofilm. The highest and lowest levels of resistance were observed against amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (95.4%) and tigecycline (96%), respectively. About 31% of isolates were considered positive for carbapenemases, and 75% of the isolates produced an ESBLs enzyme. Different frequencies of mentioned genes were observed. The synthesized AgNPs had a spherical morphology and varied in size. AgNPs inhibited the growth of MDR K. pneumoniae at 128 µg/ml. In addition, AgNPs downregulated the expression of fimH, rmpA, and mrkA genes by 10, 7, and 14‐fold, respectively (p < 0.05), also exerted no cytotoxic effect on L929 fibroblast cell lines. It was revealed that AgNPs lead to a decrease in expression levels of virulence and biofilm‐related genes; therefore, it was concluded that AgNPs had an excellent antibacterial effect on MDR K. pneumoniae. Herein, the effect of Ti2SnC MAX phase reinforcement and friction stir back extrusion (FSBE) parameters on the microstructure, mechanical, electrical, and tribological behavior of Cu‐Ti2SnC composite is investigated. The results indicate that, depending on the rotational speed of the extrusion process, an equiaxed grain microstructure with a uniform distribution of reinforcing particles is formed after the extrusion process. Comparing the extruded samples to the unprocessed samples reveals a larger grain size after extrusion. The absence of MAX phase particles causes the formation of finer grain size in the extruded sample. Under the influence of heat and plastic strain, a reactive layer containing a solid solution of Cu(Sn) or Cu3Sn compounds is formed at the interface of the particle and the copper matrix. By performing the extrusion process, the reactive layer at the interface is broken and scattered on the copper matrix. Furthermore, by applying MAX phase reinforcing particles and performing the extrusion process, the copper matrix's hardness, tensile strength, and wear resistance increase by 128, 99, and 84%, respectively. Environmental DNA (eDNA)‐based methods of species detection are enabling various applications in ecology and conservation including large‐scale biomonitoring efforts. qPCR is widely used as the standard approach for species‐specific detection, often targeting a fish species of interest from aquatic eDNA. However, DNA metabarcoding has the potential to displace qPCR in certain eDNA applications. In this study, we compare the sensitivity of the latest Illumina NovaSeq 6000 NGS platform to qPCR TaqMan assays by measuring limits of detection and by analysing eDNA from water samples collected from Churchill River and Lake Melville, NL, Canada. Species‐specific, targeted next generation sequencing (NGS) assays had significantly higher sensitivity than qPCR, with limits of detection 14‐ to 29‐fold lower. For example, when analysing eDNA, qPCR detected Gadus ogac (Greenland cod) in 21% of samples, but targeted NGS detected this species in 29% of samples. General NGS assays were as sensitive as qPCR, while simultaneously detecting 15 fish species from eDNA samples. With over 34,000 fish species on the planet, parallel and sensitive methods such as NGS will be required to support effective biomonitoring at both regional and global scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ibuprofen is a widely‐used non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drug, which belongs to class II of Biopharmaceutics classification system with low aqueous solubility and dissolution rate and bioavailability problems. This study was conducted to synthesis, optimization, and evaluation of the inclusion complex of ibuprofen‐hydroxypropyl‐beta‐cyclodextrin to overcome the challenges. Complex of ibuprofen and hydroxypropyl‐beta‐cyclodextrin (HPβCD) was prepared by co‐evaporation method in different ratios of solvents (methanol, ethanol, and distilled water were used as solvent systems). In order to find out the optimum solvent ratio, molecular dynamics simulations were performed by NAMD 2.9 software. Differential scanning calorimetry was applied to assess the complexes crystallinity and thermal behaviors. Also, Fourier transform infrared was used to monitor structural changes. Furthermore, the solubility and dissolution profiles of complexes were evaluated and compared. Complexation with HPβCD was able to reduce crystallinity and improve the thermal stability, water solubility, and dissolution profile of all synthesized complexes. HPβCD complexation using ethanol and water solvents in the ratio of 9 : 1 and 3 : 1, increased the aqueous solubility of ibuprofen by 1155 % and 874 %, respectively that was considered as the optimum approach. Plant diseases are considered one of the main factors reducing yield and quality of crops, which are constantly developing and creating more virulent races and cause the resistance of more genes to break. Identifying resistance sources and including them in breeding programs will improve resistant genotypes. Rhizomania is the most common, widespread, and devastating disease of sugar beet in Iran and worldwide. Breeding genotypes with disease resistance genes is one of the most important ways to deal with this destructive disease. Twenty sugar beet genotypes along with five controls were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with four replications in rhizomania‐infected conditions in four regions of Mashhad, Shiraz, Miandoab, and Hamedan for 2 years. The results of genotypic reaction to rhizomania showed that the genotypes with resistance reaction were much more frequent than those with susceptibility reaction. The analysis of multiplicative effects of the AMMI model showed that the first six components were significant and explained 98.80% of the interaction variations. The biplot obtained from the mean white sugar yield and the first interaction principal component confirmed the superiority of the RM5 genotype due to its high white sugar yield and stability in infected conditions. The results obtained from the first three principal components biplot showed that the RM9 genotype with a mean white sugar yield of 11.91 t. ha−1 was a genotype with vast general stability in all disease‐infected environments. Based on the results of the MTSI index, RM3, RM17, RM9, RM13, and RM15 are introduced as stable genotypes under rhizomania‐infected conditions. In conclusion, it seems that the studied genotypes have valuable and useful genes inherited from their parents to deal with rhizomania disease. This study aimed to produce and characterize eco‐friendly SSPS nanocomposites incorporated with various concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) (1%, 3%, and 7%). The antimicrobial activity of the nanocomposite films against five strains of pathogenic bacteria was examined. Salmonella typhi PTCC 1609 was the most sensitive species to TiO2 NPs at concentrations equal to the synthetic antibiotic. The migration of TiO2 to ethanol and acetic acid, as two food simulants increased when the initial nano‐TiO2 content increased. The release profiles for TiO2 in two simulants of ethanol and acetic acid indicated a non‐Fickian release, and the release kinetics were concentration‐dependent. SSPS/TiO2 nanocomposites degraded easily and thus have the potential to be applied as an eco‐friendly packaging system. Oral administration of doses of 1, 12.5, 25, 50, and 75 mg/kg TiO2 revealed that the dose of 50 and 75 mg/kg increased malondialdehyde (p <.001) concentration in the liver tissue. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a synthetic commercial polymer with the inherent hydrophilicity, thermal and chemical resistance, ecofriendly, and a high anti‐fouling potential making it an attractive choice for water treatment applications, but has been less studied for oil and gas industry applications. On the other hands, nowadays nanotechnology has gained an important space within most core areas in upstream oil and gas operations. The present work, first PVA at various concentrations, was added to 5 wt% NaCl solution and then, crosslinked by formaldehyde 37% at two different concentration ratios. To compare, a nanocomposite hydrogel was fabricated in the same way with 1 wt% silica nanoparticles (NPs). Contact angle and filtration test were performed to confirm the ability of PVA hydrogel and nanocomposite hydrogel for oil and water adsorption. Following this, a rheology measurement was made to realize the gelation time of samples and their performance for water shutoff applications. Finally, an experimental flooding setup was designed to inject the fluids into carbonate plugs in order to estimate of oil and water effective permeability, and oil recovery factor (RF) before and after the PVA hydrogel and nanocomposite hydrogel injection. Both samples wettability tests showed a super‐hydrophilic state for brine droplets and neutral state for synthetic oil droplets by using nanocomposite hydrogel. The flooding tests revealed that the PVA hydrogel was clogged the plug with blocking efficiency of 32.83% for water effective permeability and 14.60% for oil effective permeability. This value was calculated to be 50.37% for water effective permeability and 31.36% for oil effective permeability in the case of nanocomposite hydrogel injection. Oil RF was also reported to be 64.58% after injecting PVA hydrogel which was higher than nanocomposite hydrogel injection with RF of 52.08%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two mononuclear ruthenium(II) complexes based on dianionic {N4} ligands and with axial pyridines have been prepared and characterized crystallographically (1) or by 2D NMR spectroscopy using residual dipolar couplings (2). The {N4} ligands provide a constrained equatorial coordination with one large N−Ru−N angle, and additional non‐coordinating N atoms in case of 2. Their redox properties have been investigated (spectro)electrochemically, and their potential to serve as water oxidation catalysts has been probed using cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) at pH 1.0. Complex 1 undergoes rapid degradation, likely via ligand oxidation, whereas 2 is more rugged and exhibits 80 % efficiency in the CeIV‐driven water oxidation, with a high initial turnover frequency (TOFi) of 3.07×10−2 s−1 (at 100 equiv. CAN). The initial rate of O2 evolution exhibits 1st order dependence on catalyst concentration, suggesting a water nucleophilic attack mechanism. Repeated addition of CAN and control experiments show that high ionic strength conditions (both NO3− and CeIII) significantly decrease the TOF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe disease that leads to pulmonary vascular remodeling characterized by a rise in pulmonary vascular resistance and pressure. We assessed the effects of an herbal compound, berberine (BB), and some related mechanisms on PAH in rats. Male Wistar rats were assigned to seven groups: control, monocrotaline (MCT), MCT+vehicle, and MCT+BB (with doses of 10, 20, 30, and 40 mg/kg) groups. Three weeks after induction of PAH by MCT, treatment groups received daily intraperitoneal injections of vehicle or BB for 3 weeks. On Day 43, the right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP, as an index of pulmonary arterial pressure) and the ratio of RV to LV+septum weight (as RV hypertrophy index, right ventricle hypertrophy [RHVI]) were measured. Inflammatory and oxidative stress indices and histopathology of the lungs were also assessed. RVSP (89.4 ± 8.2 vs. 23 ± 3.3), RVHI (0.63 ± 0.08 vs. 0.26 ± 0.04), and lung inflammatory cytokines TNF‐α (2.03 ± 0.25 vs. 1.21 ± 0.3) and IL‐6 (8.8 ± 0.59 vs. 6.3 ± 0.95) significantly increased in the MCT group compared to the control group. MCT also raised the level of Malondialdehyde (0.11 ± 0.01 vs. 0.09 ± 0.01) and diminished total antioxidant capacity (6.5 ± 0.51 vs. 8.3 ± 0.62), the activity of superoxide dismutase (1.19 ± 0.22 vs. 1.93 ± 0.2), glutathione peroxidase (0.02 ± 0.002 vs. 0.03 ± 0.005), catalase (2.1 ± 0.29 vs. 2.8 ± 0.20) and Bax/Bcl‐2 ratio (0.41 ± 0.07 vs. 0.61 ± 0.09) in the lungs. Treatment with BB significantly recovered all of these alterations. BB ameliorated pulmonary vascular remodeling by decreasing inflammation and fibrosis and increasing apoptosis and antioxidant/oxidant balance. Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of cancer‐related deaths in females worldwide and is related to genetic and environmental factors. Dietary components may strongly influence the risk of BC. A possible association was also reported between the fat mass and obesity‐associated (FTO) single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and BC. This study aimed to investigate the impact of FTO rs9939609 polymorphism on the association between BC and dietary intake. This study was conducted on 180 women with BC as the case group and 360 healthy women as the control group. The dietary intakes were assessed by a valid 168‐item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The FTO gene was genotyped for rs9939609 polymorphism. After adjusting the confounding variables, there was no significant association between dietary intake and BC in individuals without risk allele. A positive association between dietary intake of omega‐6 fatty acids and BC was found only in individuals with risk allele of FTO gene (OR: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.08–1.60, p: 0.006). FTO gene risk allele may influence the effect of diet on breast cancer risk. Further studies are needed to assess the possible effects of the FTO genotype on the association between BC risk and dietary components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
