This article introduces a novel method for geological fault interpretation utilizing a 2D convolutional neural network approach with a focus on coalbed horizons, dealing with the problem as an image classification task. At the beginning, linear annotations, reflecting geological fault features, are applied to multiple seismic sections. By considering texture differences between fault and non‐fault areas, we construct samples that represent these distinct zones for training deep neural networks. Initially, fault annotations are transformed into single dots to facilitate pixel‐based processing. To depict a specific dot's geological structure, we employ a matrix clipped around the point, determined by a combination of range and step parameters. Convolutional layers generate filters equivalent to seismic data transformation, streamlining the need for analysis and selection of seismic attributes. The article discusses enhancing the efficiency of 2D convolutional neural network–based fault interpretation by optimizing sample selection, data extraction and model construction procedures. Through the incorporation of data from two mining areas (totalling 27.09 km2) in sample creation, the overall accuracy exceeds 0.99. Recognition extends seamlessly to unlabelled sections, showcasing the innovative technical route and methodology of fault interpretation with linear annotation and pixel‐based thinking. This study presents a method that integrates planar and raster thinking, transitioning from vision‐oriented geological structure annotation to algorithm‐oriented pixel location. The proposed 2D convolutional neural network–based matrix‐oriented fault/non‐fault binary classification demonstrates feasibility and reproducibility, offering a new automated approach for fault detection in coalbeds through convolutional neural network algorithms. Hydraulic fracturing in shale gas production can induce felt earthquakes, making it crucial to understand and mitigate induced earthquakes. The Cen'gong shale gas block in South China offers extensive data—3D seismic, geological structure, microseismic data, and detailed stimulation operations—allowing a comprehensive investigation into induced earthquakes by hydraulic fracturing. Using a dense temporary seismic array and deep‐learning workflows, we build a high precision earthquake catalog and determine their focal mechanisms. Pre‐existing fractures are identified through the Ant Tracking attribute derived from the 3D seismic data. We analyze the distribution, frequency, magnitude, and focal mechanisms of induced earthquakes, compare them spatially with the distribution of the pre‐existing fractures, and track their temporal changes during and after hydraulic fracturing. Most induced earthquakes occurred along pre‐existing fractures, exhibiting relatively larger magnitudes and persistent trailing seismicity. The number of trailing seismicity is proportional to the response time of stimulation earthquakes. The focal mechanism solutions suggest that the rupture mechanism of the trailing seismicity remained unchanged. By analyzing four clusters of earthquakes, we found that in two of these clusters, the induced earthquakes initiated from the far side of the fractures, then linearly migrated along the pre‐existing fractures. This directional migration pattern is explained by stress rotation along the fractures. Our analysis suggests that both pre‐existing fractures and stimulation operations significantly influence induced earthquake occurrences. Therefore, this work may enhance our understanding of pre‐existing fractures, and optimizing stimulation operations can mitigate earthquake hazards in shale gas production. Coalbed methane is a hot spot for gas exploration at present, and fractures are widely developed in the coals. However, despite being essential for a number of geophysical applications such as reservoir prediction and hydraulic fracturing, the influence of fractures on the elastic properties and anisotropy of coals is still poorly understood. Therefore, three groups of cylindrical coals were drilled along the face and butt cleat directions to study the effects of pressure and fracture on the elastic properties and anisotropy of tectonic coals. The velocity along the face cleat direction is less sensitive to the pressure than that along the butt cleat direction due to the difference in compliant pore and fracture content. Coals display a strong directional dependence in petrophysical and elastic properties. The permeabilities and velocities of samples along the butt cleat direction are much lower than those along the face cleat direction. The fracture densities are quantitatively characterized by the theoretical model. The values along the face cleat direction are much smaller than those along the butt cleat direction. The influence of fractures on the elastic properties and anisotropy is comprehensively studied by theoretical and laboratory methods. The mineralogy and fracture effects are important factors to the elastic anisotropy of coals, the latter can be a dominant factor to the coal elastic anisotropy. The results can contribute to the understanding of the cleat system of coalbed methane reservoir and can provide a critical rock physics basis for micro‐seismic fracture monitoring and reservoir prediction. The high precision identification of coal–rock layers is a significant challenge in intelligent mining. There is a large amount of electromagnetic noise and metal reflector signals in the full space detection environment of mining roadway, which makes it hard to distinguish the reflected waves at interface from a set of echo signals generated by the interface due to the similar amplitudes among them. So the method of identifying layers solely based on amplitude characteristics has poor stability and accuracy in coal mining environments. This paper proposes a method for identifying coal–rock layers based on Hilbert transform and tracking–scanning–stacking technology. There are two steps to achieve the recognition of air–coal–rock interfaces. First, by analysing the instantaneous amplitude spectrum obtained from the Hilbert transform, the first extreme point that is always the maximum value within a wavelength range is determined as the rough position of the air–coal interface. To solve the problem of recognition errors caused by noise and energy dispersion, the density difference method is used to remove discrete points. Second, the precise position of the air–coal interface is determined by tracking the extreme points within the 1.5 wavelength range around the rough position, and using the amplitude stacking method to quantitatively analyse and compare the degree of energy concentration. The data between zero time and the reflected waves at the air–coal interface is removed to avoid the impact of them on the recognition of the coal–rock interface. Results of physical model experiments and actual coal mine experiments show that this method yields better results and has high stability compared to conventional recognition method. Surface‐wave information from seismic data can be used for near‐surface analysis, static computation and noise suppression. The multichannel analysis of surface waves method is a useful approach for obtaining the shear wave velocity of the near surface; however, rapidly generating an image of dispersive energy in the presence of coherent noise is a challenge. In this study, we propose the imaging of the dispersive energy of the Rayleigh wave using a spatial smoothing propagation method. In this method, forward and backward spatial smoothing algorithms were used to restore the rank of the covariance matrix in strong coherent noise. Subsequently, an image of the dispersive energy was rapidly generated by the propagation method using a linear operation equivalent to the eigenvalue decomposition. The proposed method was evaluated using both synthetic and field data. The results showed that the method was easy to use and has higher resolution representation, efficiency and noise robustness compared with conventional methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most fractured reservoirs are two‐phase media, that is, mixture of solid matrix and void. It contains rock skeleton and fractures or pores filled with oil, gas and water. These fractures are the channels of oil and gas storage and migration. In two‐phase media, the interaction between the fluid and solid phases will further complicate the seismic wave propagation. Natural fractures are typically irregular in shape, thereby causing difficulties in the exploration of fractured reservoirs. Therefore, the key to the prediction of fractures is to study the equation of motion of seismic waves and energy distribution of seismic waves at the fracture interface. To derive the propagation law for complex irregular shape fractures in two‐phase media, we combined the stiffness matrix of the media with linear slip theory and derived a numerical simulation scheme. The simulation scheme considers the fractures in the two‐phase media to be in any direction. In addition, seismic wave energy distribution at the fracture interface was obtained. The linear slip boundary condition was introduced into the conventional Zoeppritz equation, and a modified Zoeppritz equation was proposed for two‐phase fractured media. The reflection and transmission due to the fracture interface were considered in the new equation, thereby making the equation more flexible. Using the new numerical simulation scheme, we analysed the elastic waves produced by the linear slip fracture interface in two‐phase media and provided the long‐term stability results of the new scheme. Moreover, we provided the relationship between the reflection and transmission coefficients of the linear slip fracture interface and the incident angle and compliance in two‐phase media using the new Zoeppritz equation. The results show that the reflection wave of two‐phase fractured media can be divided into wave impedance and fracture parts to accurately describe the properties of underground rocks. Hydraulic fracture (HF) propagation behavior is significant when building enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). HF geometry is closely related to the structural planes (SPs) in hot dry rock (HDR), such as natural fractures (NFs), quartz veins (QVs) and lithologic interfaces (LIs). However, the HF behaviors in HDR have not been well understood, especially the influence of multiple SPs on the HF geometry. To clarify this mechanism, several groups of physical simulation experiments of hydraulic fracturing were conducted to investigate the intersection relationship between the HFs and the SPs. Results show that the HF geometry shows great differences when intersecting with different SPs. In summary, the HF geometry displays four basic patterns, namely, propagation along the SPs, branching, capture, penetration/non‐dilation. The fluctuation degree of the pressure‐time curve and the HF complexity show a positive correlation. The cementing strength of the SP and their different mechanical properties from rock matrix influence the HF behaviors significantly. Therefore, the HF shows diverse geometries when intersecting with the NFs and LIs, while propagating along the QV when intersecting with it. For the complex networks, it is favorable for the HF to penetrate through and dilate several SPs, rather than simply cross or propagate along the SP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wave‐induced fluid flow, an important mechanism in seismic wave attenuation, is considered in the amplitude variation with the offset technique. In a fractured marine carbonate reservoir, fractures and pores develop simultaneously, such that wave‐induced flow is an important mechanism in attenuation caused by the fluid flow between pores as well as between pores and fractures. However, these two types of attenuation are typically investigated separately or studies assume that the pores and fractures are dry or saturated by the same fluid. Rock pores are usually saturated by a mixture of two or more fluids, such that the fracture and pore filling fluids may be different. During variation with offset reservoir prediction and fluid identification, the influence that the porosity, fracture, and fluid have on the P‐wave reflection coefficient should be considered. The patchy saturation model can describe the seismic wave dissipation caused by the wave‐induced flow between pore fluids, whereas the Norris model can describe seismic wave dissipation caused by the fluid flow between fractures and pores. This study considers both the patchy saturation model and Norris model to calculate the amplitude variation with the offset P‐wave reflection coefficient under different conditions. Combining the saturation and Norris models forms a new model, which is regarded as a transversely isotropic medium with a vertical symmetric axis, and can be extended to any incident angle through the relaxation function and the high‐ and low‐frequency elastic limits of the stiffness tensor, where the complete effective stiffness tensor of the new model can be obtained. Finally, the amplitude variation with offset reservoir technology is used to determine the influence of model parameters on the reflection coefficient of P‐waves under different angles and frequencies, including fracture weakness, fluid saturation and pore fluid saturation. Diffracted wavefields with superior illumination encode key geologic information about small‐scale geologic discontinuities or inhomogeneities in the subsurface and thus possess great potential for high‐resolution imaging. However, the weak diffracted wavefield is easily masked by the dominant reflected data. Diffraction separation from specular reflected data still plays an important role and plays a major role in diffraction imaging implementation. To solve this problem, a new diffraction‐separation method is proposed that uses variational mode decomposition to suppress reflected data and separate diffracted wavefields in the common‐offset or poststack domains. The variational mode decomposition algorithm targets reflected wavefield by decomposing seismic data into an ensemble of band‐limited intrinsic mode functions representing linear and strong reflected data. This method is based on the principle of energy sparsity and can utilize the kinematic and dynamic differences between reflected and diffracted wavefields to effectively predict linear reflected data. Synthetic and field data examples using complex body geometries demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method in enhancing diffracted wavefield and attenuating reflected data as well as increasing the signal‐to‐noise ratio, which helps to clearly image small‐scale subwavelength geologic structures. In order to achieve the goal of ecological restoration, plant irrigation, and water retention in the external dump of open-pit coal mine in the arid desert area, it is proposed to use the mudstone in the stripped material to reconstruct the surface aquiclude and improve the water holding capacity of the topsoil. By taking the Hongshaquan Open-Pit Coal Mine as the study object, the red mudstone of mining level +650 was selected as the topsoil aquiclude material through the geological survey. XRD diffraction experiments are used to determine the composition of red mudstone including kaolinite mineral, quartz, potash feldspar, albite, and illite. The moisture content of the red mudstone is 4.16% as measured by the indoor drying experiment. And the particle size of 0.5 mm, 1 mm, and 2 mm and the thickness of 5 cm, 10 cm, and 20 cm rock samples were selected to conduct the indoor soil column experiment. Three indicators of initial infiltration rate, stable infiltration rate, and average infiltration rate were obtained according to the analysis and calculation of the water column drop rate, wet peak drop rate, and cumulative infiltration rate so that the permeability law and coefficient of each group of tests can be known. The finite element transient analysis theory and numerical simulation method were adopted to verify the results of physical experiments. The research results show that +650 level red mudstone has a strong antiseepage ability, and the smaller the particle size, the better the antiseepage performance. For 0.5 mm and 2 mm particle sizes, as the paving height increases, the water-proof effect is better. The laying height of 1 mm particle size has no obvious influence on the water barrier effect. The physical simulation was confirmed to have the same result trend as the numerical simulation, both of which are quadratic functions with the error within a reasonable range. Among the various geological disasters that threaten the safe operation of long-distance oil and gas pipelines, water-damage disasters are numerous and widely developed. Especially the pipelines crossing river channels or gullies are vulnerable to scouring hazards from storms and floods. A water-damage disaster physical model was established to investigate the characteristics of the riverbed scour profile and the pipeline force when the pipeline was buried at different depths under the condition of different particle size riverbed sediment. Results indicated that the equilibrium scour depth changed in a spoon shape with the gradual increase of the embedment ratio in general. The equilibrium scour depth formed by the fine sand riverbed was the largest, about 1.5 times the pipeline diameter. When the pipeline was half exposed, the clay riverbed was more resistant to the scour of the river than the riverbed of fine sand and very fine pebbles with a larger particle size. In the riverbed of three particle sizes, fine sand was more difficult to withstand the scour of the river. The scour profile formed by the sand bed around the pipeline and the force and deformation of the pipeline were related to pipeline location and riverbed sediment type. As an ideal carrier of high‐resolution information, seismic diffraction can be used to clarify and locate small‐scale discontinuities or inhomogeneities in the subsurface. However, a diffraction is weak and thus be suppressed by the specular reflection. Furthermore, a diffraction would be destroyed by the conventional imaging method due to the polarity reversal of diffraction. In this paper, we analyse the behaviour of diffraction and reflection. For the image point on a horizontal or oblique reflector, the zone on both sides of the stationary point has the same energy after using a cosine weight function. Based on the behaviour, we propose the adaptive phase filter to adjust the polarity of the energy on both sides, and calculate it through the illumination angle and the reflector dip angle. This method avoids the calculation of the Fresnel zones and can further suppress residual reflection that disturb the diffraction images. Synthetic and field data applications show that the desired imaging results can be obtained by the proposed method. The test results demonstrate that the method is efficient in detecting small‐scale discontinuities or inhomogeneities in the subsurface and can provide high‐resolution information for seismic interpretation. Factors such as the hydrogeological conditions, the lithological characteristics of the columns’ components, and the lithological characteristics and stress conditions of the coal seam roof and floor are interrelated and jointly affect column collapse. In this study, the disaster-causing mechanism of column collapse was studied. Based on the system theory, a collapsed column is divided into the column and the surrounding fissure zone as two subsystems for analysis. And, the permeability coefficient of the broken rock under different conditions was measured by a self-designed equipment. The variations of the permeability coefficient for rock samples with different particle diameters, different axial pressures Pa, and different seepage velocities were further studied. Through phenomena analysis and experimental data processing, it was concluded that, under the same pressure state, smaller particle diameter meant smaller permeability coefficient; with the increase of axial pressure, the permeability coefficient decreased; and the larger the water flow velocity was, the smaller the permeability coefficient became. For particle diameter Φ = 2.5–5 mm or larger, the tiny particles formed by randomly washing and breaking in the water flow blocked some of the channels. For particle diameters smaller than Φ = 2.5–5 mm, the smaller permeability coefficient was attributed to the turbulence resulting from non-Darcy flow. The study on the permeability of the fractured rock mass clarified the mechanism of water inrush from the fissure zone of the collapsed column: the collapsed column itself was impermeable, and the permeability of the fissure zone around the collapsed column was related to the lithological characteristics of the rock within the fissure zone and the sequencing of rock strata. When mining coal in areas with collapsed columns, experiments on collapsed columns and fissure zones are prerequisites. This study has a certain referential value for coal mining in this region. It is important to study the mechanism of water inrush on a seam floor by exploring the rules of permeability variations during rock deformation on the seam floor and in the course of fracturing as well as their responses to characteristics of the macromechanical environment such as mine ground pressure, engineering geology, and fluid mechanics. First, through the analysis of bearing pressure changes in the process of exploiting the working face, a mechanical model for the seam floor above the confined water is established. Based on the graphic data-processing software Mathcad, the computational process and methods for assessing the vertical, horizontal, and shear stresses are provided together with the corresponding variation curve of the rock stratum 5 m below the floor, covering the entire process from a position 120 m away from the working face to a position 280 m behind it. Second, the permeability coefficients of different lithologies are measured in the laboratory. For rock stratum 5 m below the floor, the corresponding external loading path is set up according to its actual stress. The actual dynamic stress environment of the rocks is simulated, and their permeability characteristics are studied. In addition, based on data fitting, the permeability coefficient variations in the mining process are determined for a rock stratum 5 m below the floor. Finally, in accordance with the permeability variation law of the floor of the working face, the seam floor is divided into six areas, namely, the compression and expansion zone, the bed separation and expansion zone, the pressure relief zone, the compression zone, the stable recovery zone, and the stability zone. Abstract: The West Mine of the Bayan Obo deposit, located in the northern‐central part of Inner Mongolia, China, is enriched in Nb, rare earth elements and iron (Nb‐REE‐Fe) mineral resources. This paper presents a combined method to explore metallogenic correlation of the Nb‐REE‐Fe mineralization at the Bayan Obo West Mine. The method integrates factor analysis and Back Propagation (BP) neural network technology into processing and modeling of geological data. In this study, the Nb and REE contents of samples were transformed into discrete values to analyze the correlations among the metallogenic elements. The results show weak mineralization correlations between Nb and REEs. Nb and U are closely related in the geochemical patterns, while Fe is closely related to both Th and Mn. LREEs are an important factor for the mineralization of the Bayan Obo deposit, while Fe and Nb can be considered as the results of passive mineralization. On the basis of a metallogenic correlation analysis, the factors affecting the Fe‐REE‐Nb mineralization were extracted, and the Nb mineralization model was established by the BP neural network. Based on the BP neural network data computing, the variability of the Nb concentration displays a coupled multi‐factor nonlinear relationship, which can be used to reveal the inherent metallogenic elemental regularities and predict the degree of element mineralization enrichment in the mining area. Meso-Cenozoic intracontinental orogenic processes in the Tian Shan orogenic belt have significant effect on the sandstone-hosted uranium deposits in the intramontane basins and those adjacent to the orogen. The Sawafuqi uranium deposit, which is located in the South Tian Shan orogenic belt, is investigated to reveal the relationships between uranium mineralization and orogenies. Recent exploration results show that the Sawafuqi uranium deposit has tabular, stratiform, quasi-stratiform, and lens-like orebodies and various geological characteristics different from typical interlayer oxidation zone sandstone-hosted uranium deposits. Systematic studies of ore samples from the Sawafuqi uranium deposit using a variety of techniques, including thin section observation, α-track radiograph, electron microprobe and scanning electron microscope, suggest that uranium mineralization is closely related to pyrite and organic matter. Mineralization-related alterations in the host rocks are mainly silicification and argillation including kaolinite, illite (and illite-smectite mixed layer) and chlorite. Tree stages of mineralization were identified in the Sawafuqi uranium deposit: (i) uranium-bearing detritus and synsedimentary initial pre-enrichment; (ii) interlayer oxidization zone uranium mineralization; and (iii) vein-type uranium mineralization. The synsedimentary uranium pre-enrichment represents an early uranium enrichment in the Sawafuqi uranium deposit, and interlayer oxidation zone uranium mineralization formed the main orebodies, which are superimposed by the vein-type uranium mineralization. Combining the results of this study with previous studies on the Meso-Cenozoic orogenies of South Tian Shan, it is proposed that the synsedimentary uranium pre-enrichment of the Sawafuqi uranium deposit was caused by Triassic Tian Shan uplift, and the interlayer oxidation zone uranium mineralization occurred during the Eocence-Oligocene period, when tectonism was relatively quiet, whereas the vein-type uranium mineralization took place in relation to the strong orogeny of South Tian Shan since Miocene. ABSTRACT To study the impact of modern coal mining on the overlying formation, a full-life-cycle four-dimensional seismic monitoring study has been carried out. Four seismic data campaigns have been performed using flexi-bin geometry with square bins, with total duration of 171 days. The four seismic datasets have been processed with the same processing workflow and parameters; major problems such as statics correction, signal-to-noise ratio, resolution, and consistency processing are addressed taking into account the geological features of the research area. This guarantees that remaining four-dimensional differences between the time-lapse datasets show mostly geological factors due to the coal mining and effects such as surface subsidence. Our four-dimensional seismic monitoring of modern coal mining shows that mined and unmined areas have significant zoning characteristics; coal mining has a direct impact on the overlying formation. The mining leads to obvious event subsidence, which reflects that overlying formations undergo subsidence during the mining process. The overlying formation appears as two zones called caving zone and fractured zone. We determine the fault dip of the overlying formation at one end of the working face to be 56°or so by calculation and conversion. We also see that, during the coal mining process, over time, the overlying formation has a self-recovery capability, which gradually strengthens from the roof siltstone upward to the Aeolian sandstone near the surface. The stability of 20-m coal pillars between working faces displays a strengthening trend and remains safe during the mining process due to both coal seam supporting and formation compaction effects.
