Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) is characterized by vasculitis affecting small vessels. Typically, it would involve the skin, gut, and kidney and is associated with arthraglia or arthritis. In children, HSP may be complicated by intussusception, perforation and infarction of the gut, requiring surgical intervention. However, in adults, surgical intervention is seldom necessary. Sometimes, HSP may cause diagnostic confusion and results in unnecessary operation in children. This case report documents an adult patient who suffered from HSP who presented with acute abdomen that caused diagnostic confusion. In conclusion, high index of suspicion and early diagnosis of HSP may avoid unnecessary surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
