In the upcoming ubiquitous era, wearable/flexible electronics are spotlighted to get various types of numerous information in real time. Several researchers have investigated flexible materials, and developed diverse thin‐film transfer methods. However, there are some limitations of the intrinsic material unstabilities, and low production yield. Here, light‐induced thin‐film transfer methods are reported by using new transfer mechanism of phase transition in sacrificial materials. Lift‐off conditions with high‐energy laser are delicately optimized by theoretical calculations and experiments to minimize mechanical/thermal damages of the upper thin‐film devices. The selected sacrificial materials of GeSbTe (GST) and indium tin oxide (ITO) with the 300 nm thickness are delaminated from a transparent and rigid glass substrate by irradiating the excimer laser to the surface of the sacrificial layer. The laser‐based exfoliation mechanism of GST and ITO films are comprehended by various material surface analyses. Eventually, flexible oxide thin‐film transistors (TFTs) are successfully demonstrated through light‐induced exfoliation process, showing the usability of the developed transfer technique to future practical applications. UV radiation is considered indispensable from the hygienic, medical, aesthetic, and industrial perspectives. Among the various types of UV radiation, UV‐A (with a wavelength of 315–400 nm) has a significant influence because it adversely affects human skin, leading to damage such as blemishes, freckles, and wrinkles. Although various photosensors are developed for monitoring UV‐A radiation in real time, these devices have critical issues, such as inefficient fabrication processes, insufficient photoresponsivity, and incompatibility with long‐term wearable applications. Here, the authors report on a wearable UV‐detecting patch targeted for long‐term use in the medical and clinical fields. A wearable UV sensor is fabricated by integrating optimized InGaN/GaN microphotodetectors (µPDs) in a 3D porous patch. The optical and electrical properties of the device are intensively investigated under various types of optical radiation and input electrical power and show high photoresponsivity (2.82 A W−1) and excellent external quantum efficiency (897.63%). Flexible and rechargeable Zn–air batteries (ZAB) are promising candidates for attaining the high energy density required for next‐generation energy storage devices given their half‐open cathode configuration. However, the poor interfacial contact between the immobilized solid‐state electrolyte and porous cathode, and drying‐out of water in the electrolyte at low relative humidity (RH) of 30% or less, cause low performance and short lifespan. Herein, a novel hygroscopic dough‐type electrolyte with water‐absorbing and malleable free‐standing configuration originating from deliquescent KOH and severe gelation of sodium alginate (SA) by facile kneading is proposed. Because appropriate contents are required to absorb water from the atmosphere and obtain the manageable form of the dough used here, the materials composing the dough electrolyte, i.e., SA, water, and KOH, are precisely controlled to ensure high malleability, scalability, ionic conductivity, and good water retention capabilities. The optimized dough inhibits evaporation at low RH and lowers the interfacial resistance with the cathode via tight adhesion. The dough‐type ZABs show noteworthy maximum power density of 160 mW cm−2 with low catalyst mass loading (0.4 mg cm−2), specific capacity of 632 mAh gZn−1, and stability for 60 h at RH 30% and 120 h even at low temperature of −20 °C, producing reasonable output. Introduction: This study aimed to verify the association between ovarian cancer (OC) and reproductive‐ and lifestyle‐related risk factors stratified by the subtype of OC. Methods: In this matched case–control study derived from the Korean epithelial ovarian cancer study (Ko‐EVE), we calculated the risk of OC subtypes using odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) in a logistic regression model. Results: As a result of matching, 531 cases and 2,124 controls were selected. Smoking had positive association with high‐grade serous (HGS) OC (OR = 2.69, 95% CI = 1.15–6.30), whereas alcohol consumption had positive association with mucinous type (MUC) (OR = 3.63, 95% CI = 1.39–9.49). Obesity (≥30 kg/m2) was associated with clear cell type (CLC) (OR = 4.57, 95% CI = 1.06–19.77). Spontaneous abortion was negatively associated with CLC (OR = 0.34, 95% CI = 0.13–0.90), in contrast to HGS (OR = 1.43, 95% CI = 0.96–2.15). Tubal ligation, hysterectomy, and oophorectomy were associated with decreased risk of HGS (OR = 0.14, 95% CI = 0.05–0.39; OR = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.07–0.73; OR = 0.28, 95% CI = 0.08–0.97, respectively). Early menarche was strongly associated with increased risk of CLC, but not MUC (OR = 6.11, 95% CI = 1.53–24.42; OR = 3.23, 95% CI = 0.98–10.86). Further, childbirth (≥2 times) was negatively associated with endometrioid type OC and CLC (OR = 0.11, 95% CI = 0.04–0.35; OR = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.02–0.37, respectively). Oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy were negatively associated with OC (OR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.40–0.93; OR = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.32–0.80, respectively), and similar negative associations were also observed in HGS (OR = 0.69; OR = 0.60, respectively). Associations between family history of breast cancer and OC, regular exercise (≥5/week), and artificial abortion and OC were similar across all subtypes (OR = 3.92; OR = 0.41; OR = 0.72, respectively). Conclusion: A heterogeneous association between some risk factors and the incidence of each subtype of epithelial OC was observed, suggesting that the carcinogenic mechanisms of each subtype may be partly different. This study was performed to investigate the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and treatment response according to BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCA) mutations in Korean patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Two‐hundred and ninety‐eight Korean women diagnosed with high‐grade serous and/or endometrioid EOC from 2010 to 2015 were tested for germline and 86 specimens for somatic BRCA mutations, regardless of the family history. Clinical characteristics including survival outcomes were compared in patients with and without BRCA mutations (NCT02963688). A total of 43 different germline BRCA mutations were identified in 78 patients among 298 patients (26.2%). Somatic BRCA mutations were identified in 11 (12.8%) patients among patients without germline BRCA mutations. Haplotype analysis demonstrated no founder mutations in our Korean patient cohort. Insignificant differences in age at diagnosis, primary site, and residual disease after surgery were observed between patients with and without BRCA mutations. In multivariate analysis for overall survival (OS), the presence of BRCA mutation was significantly associated with OS (P =.049) in addition to platinum sensitivity (P <.001), indicating it is an independent prognostic factor for survival regardless of platinum sensitivity to first‐line chemotherapy. In addition, a higher response rate to subsequent chemotherapy after recurrence was observed in EOC patients with BRCA mutations resulting in better OS. In the current study, the prevalence of BRCA mutations in Korean patients with EOC was higher than previously reported in other ethnic groups. We demonstrated characteristics and treatment response in Korean EOC patients with BRCA mutations. Li metal, which has a high theoretical specific capacity and low redox potential, is considered to the most promising anode material for next‐generation Li ion‐based batteries. However, it also exhibits a disadvantageous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer problem that needs to be resolved. Herein, an advanced separator composed of reduced graphene oxide fiber attached to aramid paper (rGOF‐A) is introduced. When rGOF‐A is applied, F− anions, generated from the decomposition of the LiPF6 electrolyte during the SEI layer formation process form semi‐ionic CF bonds along the surface of rGOF. As Li+ ions are plated, the "F‐doped" rGO surface induces the formation of LiF, which is known as a component of a chemically stable SEI, therefore it helps the Li metal anode to operate stably at a high current of 20 mA cm−2 with a high capacity of 20 mAh cm−2. Massive computation of the reconstruction algorithm for compressive sensing (CS) has been a major concern for its real‐time application. In this paper, we propose a novel high‐speed architecture for the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm, which is the most frequently used to reconstruct compressively sensed signals. The proposed design offers a very high throughput and includes an innovative pipeline architecture and scheduling algorithm. Least‐squares problem solving, which requires a huge amount of computations in the OMP, is implemented by using systolic arrays with four new processing elements. In addition, a distributed‐arithmetic‐based circuit for matrix multiplication is proposed to counterbalance the area overhead caused by the multi‐stage pipelining. The results of logic synthesis show that the proposed design reconstructs signals nearly 19 times faster while occupying an only 1.06 times larger area than the existing designs for N = 256, M = 64, and m = 16, where N is the number of the original samples, M is the length of the measurement vector, and m is the sparsity level of the signal. Abstract: A simple and scalable method to fabricate a yarn‐type supercapacitor with a large specific capacitance without the aid of traditional pseudocapacitive electrode materials such as conducting polymers and metal oxides is reported. The yarn‐type supercapacitors are made from twisting reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or/and single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)‐coated Korean traditional paper (KTP). The yarn‐type paper supercapacitor displays surprisingly enhanced electrochemical capacitance values, showing synergistic effect between rGO and SWNTs (500 times larger than performance of yarn‐type rGO‐coated paper supercapacitors). Coating rGO or/and SWNTs on KTP gives good morphology to the composite film, in which porosity increases and mean pore diameter decreases. The yarn‐type rGO/SWNT paper supercapacitor shows good mechanical strength, high flexibility, excellent electrochemical performance, and long‐life operation. The yarn‐type supercapacitor has an excellent electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of 366 F g−1 at scan rate of 25 mV s−1 and high stability without any degradation in electrical performance up to 10 000 charge–discharge cycles. The average capacitance of rGO/SWNT@KTP yarn‐type supercapacitors is seven times higher than that of sheet‐type supercapacitors at scan rate of 500 mV s−1. Objective: Rett syndrome (RTT) and epileptic encephalopathy (EE) are devastating neurodevelopmental disorders with distinct diagnostic criteria. However, highly heterogeneous and overlapping clinical features often allocate patients into the boundary of the two conditions, complicating accurate diagnosis and appropriate medical interventions. Therefore, we investigated the specific molecular mechanism that allows an understanding of the pathogenesis and relationship of these two conditions.Methods: We screened novel genetic factors from 34 RTT-like patients without MECP2 mutations, which account for ∼90% of RTT cases, by whole-exome sequencing. The biological function of the discovered variants was assessed in cell culture and Xenopus tropicalis models.Results: We identified a recurring de novo variant in GABAB receptor R2 (GABBR2) that reduces the receptor function, whereas different GABBR2 variants in EE patients possess a more profound effect in reducing receptor activity and are more responsive to agonist rescue in an animal model.Interpretation: GABBR2 is a genetic factor that determines RTT- or EE-like phenotype expression depending on the variant positions. Purpose We tried to evaluate the association of self-leadership, effective health behaviors, and posttraumatic growth with health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Methods We recruited survivors of cancer from seven hospitals in Korea between 2011 and 2012. The patients completed the Seven Habits Profile (7HP) to evaluate leadership competency, the 10 rules for highly effective health behavior to evaluate health behavior, the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) to evaluate posttraumatic growth, the Short Form 36 (SF-36) to evaluate HRQOL, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to evaluate anxiety and depression. We performed multiple logistic regressions to identify significant associations. Results A total of 668 patients with cancer participated in the study. Patients who scored high on the leadership subscales of Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw in 7HP tried to practice and keep their health behaviors more. The Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw subscales of the 7HP were also significantly correlated with subscales on the PTGI. Patients who scored high on the leadership subscales of Life Balance, Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Think Win-Win, and Sharpen the Saw had higher physical and mental component scale scores on the SF-36 and lower anxiety and depression subscale scores on the HADS. Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe the features of patients with brain metastasis from cervical cancer. Material and Methods: The medical records of patients with cervical cancer between February 2001 and June 2011 were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical characteristics, symptoms, treatment and survival in patients with brain metastasis were analyzed. Results: Eleven patients with brain metastasis from cervical cancer were identified, representing an incidence of brain metastasis in the study population of 0.45%. Median patient age at initial diagnosis of cervical cancer was 50 years (range 33-75 years). Non-squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed in six (54.5%) of the 11 patients, with small cell carcinoma diagnosed in two patients. Ten of the 11 patients had lung-related metastasis at presentation; eight patients had lung metastasis, one had mediastinal lymph node metastasis, and one had pleural metastasis. The median interval from diagnosis of cervical cancer to identification of brain metastasis was 15.4 months (range 3.4-83.3 months). Nine patients presented with neurologic symptoms, such as headache, nausea, vomiting, seizure and extremity weakness. Initially, six patients received whole brain radiotherapy: three patients received chemotherapy; one underwent surgery; and one patient refused treatment. The median survival time after diagnosis of the brain metastases was 5.9 months (range 0.7-19 months). Conclusion: The prognosis after diagnosis of the brain metastasis in patients with uterine cervical cancer is poor. Aim: Non-endometrioid endometrial cancer is a clinically and pathologically distinct subtype of endometrial cancer. The aim of this study was to determine whether systematic pelvic lymphadenectomy improves overall survival compared to no lymphadenectomy in non-endometrioid endometrial cancer. Material and Methods: The authors retrospectively reviewed the medical records and pathological findings of 112 patients who underwent surgical staging for non-endometrioid endometrial cancer from 2000 to 2006 in Korea. Results: Systematic pelvic lymphadenectomy was performed in 71 patients. Pelvic lymph node metastases were identified in 31% and 14.6% patients who underwent systematic pelvic lymphadenectomy and no lymphadenectomy, respectively. After adjusting for risk factors, there was no significant difference in overall survival (odds ratio = 0.69; 95% confidence interval, 0.29-1.67) between patients who did or did not undergo systematic pelvic lymphadenectomy. On multivariate analysis, patients with lymph node metastasis had higher risk of death (odds ratio = 3.11; 95% confidence interval, 0.97-10.00) than the patients with no lymph node metastasis. Conclusion: Although systematic pelvic lymphadenectomy did not affect overall survival in patients with the non-endometrioid subtype, it has the potential benefit of providing prognostic information and acting as a guide for further adjuvant treatment. The Ras effector NORE1 is frequently silenced in primary adenocarcinomas, although the significance of this silencing for tumorigenesis is unclear. Here we show that NORE1 induces polyubiquitination and proteasomal degradation of oncoprotein HIPK1 by facilitating its interaction with the Mdm2 E3 ubiquitin ligase. Endogenous HIPK1 is stabilized in Nore1-deficient mouse embryonic fibroblasts, and depletion of HIPK1 in NORE1-silenced lung adenocarcinoma cells inhibits anchorage-independent cell growth and tumour formation in nude mice. These findings indicate that the control of HIPK1 stability by Mdm2-NORE1 has a major effect on cell behaviour, and epigenetic inactivation of NORE1 enables adenocarcinoma formation in vivo through HIPK1 stabilization. Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA is considered as a hallmark of cervical cancer. We investigated whether persistent HPV DNA at the cervix is associated with local recurrence after radiotherapy in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer. A total of 156 patients with HPV-positive cervical cancer (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IB-IVB) treated with radiotherapy between July 2003 and December 2006 were analyzed. HPV DNA was measured prior to radiotherapy and after completion of radiotherapy. The results of HPV DNA test at postradiotherapy 1, 3, 6 and 12 months were analyzed individually for association with local recurrence-free survival (LRFS). In addition, the result of any last follow-up HPV test within 24 months postradiotherapy was defined as the overall status of HPV at 24 months and was also analyzed for association with LRFS. HPV DNA was cleared in 127 patients (81.4%) and persistent in 29 patients (18.6%) by 24 months. In 18 patients with local recurrences, 14 patients (78%) showed positive HPV tests at 1-3 months. Among the various time points analyzed, a positive HPV test at 3 months was the most accurate predictor of local recurrence. Multivariate analysis indicated that overall status of HPV at 24 months, low HPV viral load and histologic grade as being significantly related to poor LRFS. In HPV-positive cervical carcinoma treated primarily with radiotherapy, persistent HPV DNA within 24 months after treatment indicates a high risk of local recurrence. Abstract: In this study, we identified p53 as a novel TCTP-interacting protein using TCTP as bait. Also, we determined the critical binding sites between TCTP and p53. To elucidate the functional consequence of the interaction, we developed the overexpression and inhibition system of TCTP and p53 expression. Overexpression of TCTP in lung carcinoma cells reversed p53 mediated apoptosis and inhibition of TCTP expression by small interfering RNA increased apoptosis of lung carcinoma cells. Moreover, it was observed that TCTP overexpression promotes degradation of p53. These results clearly indicate that the interaction between TCTP and p53 prevents apoptosis by destabilizing p53. Thus, TCTP acts as a negative regulator of apoptosis in lung cancer. Protein O-phosphorylation often occurs reciprocally with O-GlcNAc modification and represents a regulatory principle for proteins. O-phosphorylation of serine by glycogen synthase kinase-3β on Snail1, a transcriptional repressor of E-cadherin and a key regulator of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) programme, results in its proteasomal degradation. We show that by suppressing O-phosphorylation-mediated degradation, O-GlcNAc at serine112 stabilizes Snail1 and thus increases its repressor function, which in turn attenuates E-cadherin mRNA expression. Hyperglycaemic condition enhances O-GlcNAc modification and initiates EMT by transcriptional suppression of E-cadherin through Snail1. Abstract: Increased modification of proteins with O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) has been implicated in the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. We used the well-characterized ES cells (Nkx2.5GFP knock-in ES cells), to investigate the role of O-GlcNAcylation in cardiomyocyte development. O-GlcNAcylation decreased in differentiating ES cells, as did the expression of O-GlcNAc transferase. Increasing O-GlcNAcylation with glucosamine or by inhibiting N-acetylglucosaminidase (streptozotocin or PUGNAc) decreased the number of cardiomyocyte precursors and cardiac-specific gene expression. On the other hand, decreasing O-GlcNAcylation with an inhibitor of glutamine fructose-6-phosphate amidotransferase (6-diazo-5-oxo-norleucine) increased cardiomyocyte precursors. Abstract: Yeast two-hybrid screening was conducted using a human ovary cDNA library to search for a novel binding protein using transforming growth factor-beta stimulated clone-22 (TSC-22). The selected protein was fortilin, which has been characterized as a nuclear anti-apoptotic protein. Overexpression of fortilin in ovarian carcinoma cells reversed TSC-22-mediated apoptosis, and the inhibition of fortilin expression via small interfering RNA (siRNA) resulted in an increase in the apoptosis of ovarian carcinoma cells. Moreover, fortilin overexpression promoted the degradation of TSC-22. Thus, an interaction between fortilin and TSC-22 prevents apoptosis via the destabilization of TSC-22 in ovarian carcinoma cells. Cervical cancer is a major health problem for Korean women, accounting for 9.8% of new female cancer cases, even though incidence rates have been decreasing. The Korean cervical cancer mortality rate for 1993-2002 based on National Statistical Office data shows an increasing trend, but the actual rates are thought to have decreased by epidemiologists, clinicians and other cancer experts. To explain this gap and solve this problem, we corrected the number of cervical cancer deaths by comparing death certificate cases of unspecified uterine cancer data with the national cancer incidence databases of entire cancer registries in Korea. We used 2 different methods to make a correction. First, we considered 'uterus, unspecified' deaths previously registered as 'cervix, uterine' cases misclassified and added them to the cervical cancer deaths. Alternatively, we multiplied the total number of registered unspecified uterine cancer deaths by age-specific proportions of registered incident cervical cancer cases among all cancers and added the product to cervical cancer deaths. The overall corrected age-standardized cervical cancer mortality rates per 100,000 women decreased from 5.2 in 1993 to 3.9 in 2002 (estimated annual percentage change (EAPC): −4.05%, 95% CI: −4.88, −3.22). While cervical cancer mortality showed a decreasing tendency in women aged 30-69 years, it increased substantially in women aged ≥70 years (EAPC: 3.62%, 95% CI: 1.92-5.35). Tumor hypoxia has a pronounced effect on malignant progression and metastatic spread of human tumors. As carbonic anhydrases (CA) 9 and 12 are induced by the low-oxygen environment within tumors, we investigated the relationship between the expression of these two CA and the presence of metastatic lymph nodes (LN) in uterine cervical cancer. CA9/CA12 expression was evaluated histochemically in primary cervical cancer tissues of 73 patients who underwent laparoscopic LN staging and two patients with clinical staging before definitive radiotherapy at the National Cancer Center, Korea. We also evaluated CA9 expression in 33 patients with pathologically confirmed metastatic LN. CA9 expression in the primary tumors was significantly associated with LN metastasis ( P = 0.03) and poorer disease-free survival (relative risk, 6.1; 95% confidence interval, 1.3–28.3, P = 0.02, multivariate analysis), whereas CA12 expression did not show such a relationship. In addition, 21 of 24 metastatic LN revealed similar CA9 expression ( P = 0.001), suggesting that CA9-expressing tumor cells had a higher metastatic potential. CA9 was expressed in 45 of 75 (60%) primary tumors, with positive tumor cells observed predominantly in the area away from the blood vessels. In contrast, CA12 expression was observed in only 29 of 74 primary tumors (39%), without a specific pattern. These findings indicate that expression of CA9, but not CA12, in tumors is associated with the presence of LN metastases and poorer prognosis. Selective application of new treatment modalities based on CA9 expression to prevent LN metastases may improve overall treatment outcome in patients with uterine cervical cancer.
