Juglans regia L. is a well‐known therapeutic plant in Nepal, employed in traditional medicine for treating liver ailments. This study aimed to evaluate the in vivo and in silico liver‐protective effects of J. regia extract using a carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)‐induced hepatic damage rat model. Healthy male rats were randomly divided into six groups: normal control (distilled water 10 mL/kg), toxic control (distilled water 10 mL/kg), standard test (silymarin 100 mg/kg), and three groups receiving oral J. regia extracts (125, 250, and 500 mg/kg/day) for seven days. On the eighth day, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) (1.5 mL/kg in 1:1 olive oil ratio for all groups, except the normal control). Rats were sacrificed on the ninth day, and blood was collected retro‐orbitally for liver blood injury tests and histopathological studies. Molecular docking was performed against cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP450 2E1) enzyme for 16 selected phytoconstituents. J. regia, at doses of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg, significantly reduced liver enzyme levels (alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, direct bilirubin, and total bilirubin), while increasing serum albumin. Histological analysis revealed mitigation of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)‐induced liver injury, reducing fatty degeneration and necrosis. Molecular docking supported the findings, with Beta‐sitosterol and Betulinic acid exhibiting the best binding affinity of −9.2 and −9.1 kcal/mol, respectively. In conclusion, result suggests that J. regia showed dose‐dependent hepatoprotective activity in CCl4‐induced hepatotoxicity and it could be utilized as a promising hepatoprotective agent. Dust emission fluxes during wind soil erosion are usually estimated using a dust concentration vertical gradient, by assuming a constant dust flux layer between the surface and the dust measurement levels. Here, we investigate the existence of this layer during erosion events recorded in Iceland and Jordan. Size‐resolved dust fluxes were estimated at three levels between 2 and 4 m using the eddy‐covariance method. Dust fluxes were found mainly constant only between the two upper levels in Iceland, the lower dust flux being often stronger and richer in coarse particles, while dust fluxes in Jordan were nearly constant across all levels. The wind dynamics could not explain the absence of a constant dust flux layer in Iceland. We show that the presence of stationary dust source patches in Iceland, related to surface humidity, created a non‐uniform dust layer near the surface, named dust roughness sublayer (DRSL), where individual plumes behind each patch interact but do not fully mix. The lowest dust measurement level was probably located within this sublayer while the upper ones were located above, such that there the emitted dust became spatially well‐mixed. This explains near the surface in Iceland, the more intermittent dust concentration, its low correlation with the dust concentrations above, and the richer dust flux in coarse particles due to their lower deposition contribution. Our findings highlight the importance of estimating dust fluxes above a dust blending height whose characteristics depend on the dust source patchiness caused by surface humidity or the presence of sparse non‐erosive elements. Objective: To identify abuse and other risk factors associated with depression in older Ecuadorian adults using data from the 2012 Ecuador's Survey of Health, Welfare, and Aging (SABE). Methods: This cross‐sectional study analyzed data from the 2012 SABE survey, which included 5235 adults aged 60 and above. The study evaluated residence, education level, ethnic self‐identification, self‐perceived health and memory, loneliness, cognitive status, and abuse. Depression was assessed using the Yesavage Depression Scale, short version (YDS‐SV). Categorical variables were analyzed with the Chi‐square test, differences between groups were calculated with the Kruskal–Wallis test, and multiple linear regression analysis was performed. A p‐value of ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age was 71.39 ± 8.59 years and 55.10% of the sample were women. Abuse was absent in 72.1% (3.773) of the population. The Chi‐square test indicated significant associations between depression and poor self‐reported health (P = 0.000) and indigenous ethnicity (P = 0.000). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that age (P < 0.001), abuse (p < 0.001), cognitive status (P = 0.002), and living alone (P = 0.034) significantly contributed to mood as assessed by the YDS‐SV. No statistically significant association was found for perceived health status or place of residence (urban or rural). Conclusions: Risk factors associated with depression in older Ecuadorian adults include advanced age, living alone, cognitive decline, poor self‐perception of health and cognition, and abuse. In this study, we examine the effect of ex‐military Chief Executive Officers (CEO)s on the readability of 10‐Ks. Using the Bog Index as a measure of readability, we find that firms run by ex‐military CEOs have much more readable financial reports, mainly because of the words used in these financial reports. Ex‐military CEOs also have a moderating effect—we find that their leadership lessens the adverse effects of loss and business complexity on the 10‐K's readability. These results are consistent with the view that ex‐military CEOs resist the temptation to obfuscate negative news and may communicate complexity in operations more clearly. Human activities can influence behaviors of predators and prey, as well as predator–prey interactions. Using camera trap data, we investigated whether or to what extent human activities influenced behaviors of predators (tigers and leopards) and prey (sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, and barking deer), and predator–prey interactions in the Barandabhar Corridor Forest (BCF), Chitwan District, Nepal. A multispecies occupancy model revealed that the presence of humans altered the conditional occupancy of both prey and predator species. Specifically, the conditional occupancy probability of prey was substantially higher (ψ = 0.91, CI = 0.89–0.92) when humans were present than when humans were absent (ψ = 0.68, CI = 0.54–0.79). The diel activity pattern of most prey species overlapped strongly with humans, whereas predators were generally more active when humans were absent. Finally, the spatiotemporal overlap analysis revealed that human–prey interactions (i.e., the probability that both humans and prey species being present on the same grid at the same hourly period) was ~3 times higher (10.5%, CI = 10.4%–10.6%) compared to spatiotemporal overlap between humans and predators (3.1%, CI = 3.0%–3.2%). The Chinese pangolin is a critically endangered and biologically unique species, yet information on its status, distribution, and habitat preferences is still scarce in Nepal, which limits effective conservation action. This study identified the current burrow density status, distribution pattern, and important habitat parameters associated with Chinese pangolin distribution in Nepal through opportunistic field surveys. Fifty‐four belt transects were examined for the presence of pangolin burrows. For each active burrow (burrow with freshly dug soil, footprints, and scat near the entrance) and old burrow (burrow with compacted soil, presence of dead leaves, and spider web in the entrance), we recorded the geographic coordinates and assessed data on 11 habitat parameters that included elevation, aspect, slope, canopy cover, ground cover, presence or absence of ant and termite colonies, habitat type, soil type, and distances to the nearest water source, road, and settlement. A total of 141 active burrows and 430 old burrows were recorded with an overall clumped distribution S2/a=2.188$$ \left\{\left({S}^2/a\right)=2.188\right\} $$. Active burrow density was estimated to be 1.04 burrows/ha. Of the 11 habitat parameters predicted to influence the probability of encountering pangolin burrows, all parameters were significant except elevation. More than 92% of the burrows were found at elevations between 450 and 750 m and facing either the SE or NW aspect. Similarly, about 90% of the burrows were distributed in areas having slopes between 0% and 30% with moderate to high canopy and ground cover, and located close to water sources, roads, and settlements. Additionally, they strongly preferred forest habitats (with Shorea robusta, Castanopsis indica, Schima wallichii, Clerodendron infortunatum, and Nephrolepis auriculata as the dominant vegetation), areas with red soil, and areas located near ant and termite colonies. Although the study area currently provides suitable habitat for Chinese pangolins, it is slowly being degraded due to increasing rates of forest degradation. Conservation efforts should be increased in order to protect this critically endangered species and their preferred habitats. Finally, our findings reveal the preferred habitat characteristics of Chinese pangolins, which could be instrumental for policy makers and forest managers in making conservation plans for Chinese pangolins. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of different techniques to seal the alveolus (flap advancement [FA], open healing with barrier [OHB], and open healing without barrier [OHNB]) during alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in terms of horizontal ridge width resorption. Materials and Methods: Randomized trials of at least 2 months duration comparing at least two techniques to seal the alveolus against each other or against spontaneous healing (SH) were eligible. Searches were conducted in MEDLINE via PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Cochrane Central. Conventional meta‐analysis, meta‐regression, and network meta‐analysis (NMA) were conducted, with clinical and tomographic ridge width changes as outcomes. Predictive intervals (95% PI) were reported. Results: Twenty‐two studies were included, accounting for 52 study arms. Meta‐regression identified that the socket sealing technique and publication year explained the observed heterogeneity. NMA showed that FA and OHB led to significantly lower ridge resorption than SH, resulting in 1.18 mm (95% PI 0.21–2.13) and 1.10 mm (95% PI 0.49–1.69) wide alveolar ridges, respectively. No significant difference between OHNB and SH was found (0.46 mm, 95% PI –0.70 to 1.64). The treatment with the largest probability for ARP was FA (52.7%), followed by OHB (39.1%) and OHNB (8.2%). Privacy concerns for rare disease data, institutional or IRB policies, access to local computational or storage resources or download capabilities are among the reasons that may preclude analyses that pool data to a single site. A growing number of multisite projects and consortia were formed to function in the federated environment to conduct productive research under constraints of this kind. In this scenario, a quality control tool that visualizes decentralized data in its entirety via global aggregation of local computations is especially important, as it would allow the screening of samples that cannot be jointly evaluated otherwise. To solve this issue, we present two algorithms: decentralized data stochastic neighbor embedding, dSNE, and its differentially private counterpart, DP‐dSNE. We leverage publicly available datasets to simultaneously map data samples located at different sites according to their similarities. Even though the data never leaves the individual sites, dSNE does not provide any formal privacy guarantees. To overcome that, we rely on differential privacy: a formal mathematical guarantee that protects individuals from being identified as contributors to a dataset. We implement DP‐dSNE with AdaCliP, a method recently proposed to add less noise to the gradients per iteration. We introduce metrics for measuring the embedding quality and validate our algorithms on these metrics against their centralized counterpart on two toy datasets. Our validation on six multisite neuroimaging datasets shows promising results for the quality control tasks of visualization and outlier detection, highlighting the potential of our private, decentralized visualization approach. Summary: The coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid‐19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), is an international public health crisis with devastating effects. In particular, this pandemic has further exacerbated the burden in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, where dengue fever, caused by dengue virus (DENV), is already endemic to the population. The similar clinical manifestations shared by Covid‐19 and dengue fever have raised concerns, especially in dengue‐endemic countries with limited resources, leading to diagnostic challenges. In addition, cross‐reactivity of the immune responses in these infections is an emerging concern, as pre‐existing DENV‐antibodies might potentially affect Covid‐19 through antibody‐dependent enhancement. In this review article, we aimed to raise the issue of Covid‐19 and dengue fever misdiagnosis, not only in a clinical setting but also with regards to cross‐reactivity between SARS‐CoV‐2 and DENV antibodies. Purpose: To evaluate the quantitative imaging performance of a spectral photon‐counting computed tomography (SPCCT) scanner for radiotherapy applications. An experimental comparison of the quantitative performance of a Siemens dual‐energy CT (DECT) and a MARS SPCCT scanner is performed to estimate physical properties relevant to radiotherapy of human substitute materials and contrast agent solutions. In human substitute materials, the accuracy of quantities relevant to photon therapy, proton therapy, and Monte‐Carlo simulations, such as the electron density, proton stopping power, and elemental composition is evaluated. For contrast agent solutions, the accuracy of the contrast agent concentrations and the virtual non‐contrast (VNC) electron density is evaluated. Methods: Human tissue substitute phantoms (Gammex 467 and 472) as well as diluted solutions of contrast agents (iodine and gadolinium based) are scanned with two commercial systems: a Siemens dual‐source CT (SOMATOM Definition Flash, Siemens Healthineers, Forchheim, Germany) and a MARS spectral photon‐counting micro‐CT (MARS V5.2, MARS Bioimaging Ltd., Christchurch, New Zealand). Material decomposition is performed in a maximum a posteriori framework with an optimized material basis tailored to characterize either human substitute materials or contrast agents in the context of experimental multi‐energy CT data. Results: The root‐mean‐square error (RMSE) of the electron density calculated over all Gammex inserts is reduced from 1.09 to 0.89% when going from DECT to SPCCT. For the proton stopping power, the RMSE is reduced from 1.92 to 0.89%. Elemental mass fractions of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and calcium are more accurately estimated with the MARS scanner. The RMSE on the iodine‐based contrast agents concentration is reduced from 0.27 to 0.12 mg/mL with SPCCT, and the VNC electron density from 0.40 to 0.22%. Conclusion: In the present phantom study, a MARS photon‐counting scanner provides superior accuracy compared to a Siemens SOMATOM Definition Flash DECT scanner to quantify physical parameters relevant to radiotherapy. This work experimentally demonstrates the benefits of using more energies to characterize human tissue equivalent materials. This highlights the potential of SPCCT for particle therapy, where more accurate tissue characterization is needed, as well as for Monte‐Carlo based planning, which requires accurate elemental mass fractions. The performance of multiple‐input and multiple‐output (MIMO) flip‐orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (flip‐OFDM) for indoor optical wireless communications (OWCs) is studied here. To improve the system performance in terms of the bit error rate (BER), the singular value decomposition (SVD)‐based MIMO technique is applied together with the bit loading technique. The authors, especially, focus on optimising the BER performance of SVD‐based MIMO‐OFDM OWC systems under the impact of the OFDM symbol design, the configuration of MIMO transmitters, the required data rates, the available bandwidth, and the angular diversity based on tilting receiver photo detectors (PDs). The system BER expressions are analytically derived and verified to be accurate through comparison with simulation results. The authors find that the 9 × 4‐MIMO system is the optimal configuration in terms of a large coverage of low BER regions and low computational complexity for the 5 m × 5 m room. In addition, polar angle tilting of PDs can effectively improve the BER performance. Finally, in case of light dimming control with a low total transmit optical power, the system can benefit from a high multiplexing gain with a large tilting polar angle, as indicated by improved condition numbers of MIMO channel matrices. Contents: This study aimed to examine the in vitro culture of secondary preantral follicles, using reused ovaries, to compare both the 2D and 3D methods of in vitro culture of preantral follicles, and the system of medium replacement. Twenty‐five pairs of ovaries from mixed‐breed goats were used for the experiment. Follicular puncture of antral follicles was performed for in vitro production. After this procedure, the secondary preantral follicles were submitted to a microdissection procedure. The isolated preantral follicles were randomly divided into three treatments: (a) Two‐dimensional culture with partial replacement of medium during culture (2D PR), (b) Three‐dimensional culture with addition of medium during culture (3D AD) and (c) Three‐dimensional culture with partial replacement of medium (3D PR). The culture period was 18 days. All treatments at the end of the in vitro culture period (18 days) presented a follicular survival rate which ranged from 59% to 70%, demonstrating that it was possible to perform an experiment with preantral follicles using ovaries that had previously been used in another reproductive biotechnique. The 3D AD treatment showed a survival percentage and follicular diameter higher than the 2D PR treatment, however, it did not differ from the 3D PR treatment. In conclusion, experiments employing the use of preantral follicles can be performed with success after the ovaries have been used for experiments with antral follicles. Moreover, the three‐dimensional system with the addition of medium is recommended for in vitro culture of preantral follicles, since this system is more practical and financially feasible. Abstract: In this paper, we present a method that uses a combination of experimental and modeled data to assess properties of x‐ray beam measured using a small‐animal spectral scanner. The spatial properties of the beam profile are characterized by beam profile shape, the angular offset along the rotational axis, and the photon count difference between experimental and modeled data at the central beam axis. Temporal stability of the beam profile is assessed by measuring intra‐ and interscan count variations. The beam profile assessment method was evaluated on several spectral CT scanners equipped with Medipix3RX‐based detectors. On a well‐calibrated spectral CT scanner, we measured an integral count error of 0.5%, intrascan count variation of 0.1%, and an interscan count variation of less than 1%. The angular offset of the beam center ranged from 0.8° to 1.6° for the studied spectral CT scanners. We also demonstrate the capability of this method to identify poor performance of the system through analyzing the deviation of the experimental beam profile from the model. This technique can, therefore, aid in monitoring the system performance to obtain a robust spectral CT; providing the reliable quantitative images. Furthermore, the accurate offset parameters of a spectral scanner provided by this method allow us to incorporate a more realistic form of the photon distribution in the polychromatic‐based image reconstruction models. Both improvements of the reliability of the system and accuracy of the volume reconstruction result in a better discrimination and quantification of the imaged materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cybersecurity is one of the main concerns of many organizations today, and accessibility to cybersecurity information in a timely manner is crucial to maintaining cybersecurity. Various repositories of cybersecurity-related information are publicly available on the Internet. However, users are unaware of many of them, and it is impractical for them to keep track of all of them. Cybersecurity information stored in these repositories must be able to be located and accessed by the parties who need it. To address this issue, this paper proposes a mechanism of linking, locating, and discovering various cybersecurity information to improve its accessibility in a timely manner. This mechanism allows us to locate various cybersecurity information having different schemata by generating metadata with which a list of cybersecurity information is managed. The information structure incorporated in this mechanism is unique, and it makes our mechanism flexible and extensible. The structure consists of categories and formats that are linked to each other. The mechanism can propagate information updates to minimize the risk of obsolete information. This paper also introduces a prototype of the mechanism to demonstrate its feasibility, and it analyzes the mechanism's extensibility, scalability, and information credibility. Through this study, we aim to improve the accessibility of cybersecurity information on the Internet and facilitate information sharing beyond organizational borders, with the eventual goal of creating a web of cybersecurity. Objectives To examine the associations between cumulative physical activity ( PA) and its changes over 3 years and changes over 9 years of follow-up in physical performance in older adults. Design Longitudinal. Setting Community-based. Participants Men and women aged 65 and older from the Invecchiare in Chianti study (N = 782). Measurements Physical performance was assessed at baseline and at 3-, 6-, and 9-year follow-up using the Short Physical Performance Battery ( SPPB). PA was assessed through an interviewer-administered questionnaire at baseline and 3-year follow-up. Analyses were adjusted for education, body mass index, smoking, alcohol intake, coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, cancer, lung disease, lower extremity osteoarthritis, depression, and Mini-Mental State Examination. Results Over 3 years of follow-up, 27.8% of participants were inactive, 52.2% were minimally active, and 20.0% were active, and the PA of 37.2% decreased, there was no change in PA of 50.1% and the PA of 12.7% increased. After adjustment for potential covariates, being mostly active (−1.08, 95% confidence interval ( CI) = −1.43 to −0.73) and minimally active (−1.33, 95% CI = −1.53 to −1.12) over 3 years of follow-up was associated with less decline in SPPB score than being mostly inactive (−2.60, 95% CI = −2.92 to −2.27). When analyzing changes, increasing PA (−0.57, 95% CI = −1.01 to −0.12) was associated with less decline in SPPB score over 9 years than decreasing PA (−2.16, 95% CI = −2.42 to −1.89). The vulva is an under-studied area of the female genitourinary tract which is prone to maceration, overgrowth of organisms, and atypical presentations of common dermatologic conditions. In current practice, dermatologists must recognize and manage vulvar infections and infestations beyond the more commonly recognized sexually transmitted infections. ABSTRACT Zellweger syndrome (ZS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, resulting from an impairment in peroxisome function. It is characterized by craniofacial dysmorphism and neurological abnormalities, and involves several systems, which may complicate dental and anesthesia management. The case of a 7-year-old girl diagnosed with ZS is described with emphasis on oral manifestations, oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia (GA), and home oral care. Apart from the unique features of ZS, she presented with clinodactyly, distinctive palatal vault, Class III malocclusion, missing teeth, microdontia, and delayed dental formation. Dental treatment under GA was conducted with concerns of risk of respiratory insufficiency. Oral home care by the parent and regular recall visits were essential to maintain good oral health. Children with ZS may survive into late childhood. They, however, present multiple health problems that are of special concern for not only the pediatric dentist but also the anesthesiologist. The aim of this study was to assess baseline knowledge of skin cancer, sun protection practices, and perceptions of tanning among third through fifth grade elementary students in Florida. A total of 4,002 students in nineteen elementary schools in Palm Beach County, Florida were surveyed. SunSmart America™ curriculum pretest responses were the main outcome measures. Overall students’ knowledge using a students’ mean knowledge scale scores of skin cancer and sun protection were low (<40% of questions answered correctly) and was found to increase with increasing grade level (p < 0.01). Boys more frequently reported spending greater than 2 hours in the sun when compared with girls (p < 0.01). Girls, however, were more likely to try and get a tan most of the time or always when compared with boys (p = 0.02). Non-Hispanic White students (51.3%) more frequently reported use of SPF 15 or greater sunscreen “most of the time or always” compared with Hispanic (35.3%) and non-Hispanic Black (13.4%) students (p < 0.01). Elementary aged students in south Florida have limited knowledge about sun safety, despite spending considerable amount of time in the sun. Sun safe behavior is associated with gender and ethnicity. The article reports on results of a study of cutaneous soft tissue sarcoma (CSTS) incidence patterns in the United States. A description of the experimental set-up and measurement method is presented. The study concluded that CSTS rates varied markedly over time and by race, sex and histologic type which supported the notion that these histologic variants of CSTS are etiologically distinct.

Levels of three major dehydrins of 65, 60, and 14 kDa have been observed to increase in blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) floral buds during chill unit accumulation and cold acclimation and decrease during deacclimation and resumption of growth. Indeed, levels of the 65-, 60-, and 14-kDa dehydrins increase such that they become the most predominant proteins visible on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gels. The peptide sequence information from the 65- and 60-kDa dehydrins was used to synthesize degenerate DNA primers for amplification of a part of the gene(s) encoding the dehydrins. One pair of primers amplified a 174-bp fragment. The 174-bp fragment was used to screen a cDNA library (prepared from RNA from cold-acclimated blueberry floral buds) and resulted in the isolation of a clone with a 2.0-kb insert. The cDNA was sequenced and found to be a full-length clone encoding a K5-type dehydrin (5 K boxes). Five high-confidence peptide sequences, ranging from 9 to 25 amino acids long, obtained from the 60-kDa dehydrin exactly matched sequences encoded within the cDNA clone. Furthermore, amino acid composition of the 60-kDa dehydrin agreed well with the expected amino acid composition based on the cDNA sequence. However, the DNA sequence and coupled in vitro transcription/translation reactions of the cDNA clone indicated that it encodes a dehydrin with a native molecular mass of ∼40 kDa instead of 60 kDa. Experiments to determine if the dehydrins undergo post-translational modifications revealed that the 65- and 60-kDa dehydrins are glycosylated. Thus, our results indicate that the 2.0-kb dehydrin cDNA encodes the native version of the 60-kDa dehydrin. The dehydrin cDNA hybridized on RNA blots to two chilling/cold-responsive messages of 2.0 and 0.5 kb. Both the 2.0- and 0.5-kb messages increased to higher levels more quickly in the cold-hardy cultivar Bluecrop than in the less hardy cultivar Tifblue. To survive winters, woody perennials of temperate zones must enter into endodormancy. Resumption of spring growth requires sufficient exposure to low temperature (chill units, CUs) in winter (chilling requirement), which also plays a role in the development of cold hardiness (cold acclimation). Physiological studies on dormancy breaking have focused on identifying markers, such as appearance or disappearance of proteins in response to varying degrees of chill unit accumulation. However, whether these changes are associated with dormancy transitions or cold acclimation is not clear. In the present study, greenhouse-grown blueberry (Vaccinium section Cyanococcus) plants were used to address this question. Three blueberry cultivars, Bluecrop, Tifblue, and Gulfcoast having chilling requirement of approximately 1 200, 900 and 600 CUs, respectively, were first exposed to 4°C for long enough to provide chill units equivalent to one-half of their respective chilling requirement. This treatment was expected to result in cold acclimation. A fraction of plants was then subjected to a 15/12°C (light/dark) regime for 2 weeks, a treatment expected to be "dormancy-neutral" but cause deacclimation. Before and after each treatment, cold hardiness and dormancy status of floral buds were determined; proteins were extracted from the buds collected on the same sampling date, and separated by one-dimensional SDS-PAGE. Dehydrin-like proteins were identified by immunoblotting, using anti-dehydrin antiserum. Results indicate that the chilling treatment resulted in cold acclimation as indicated by increased bud hardiness in all three cultivars. Data also indicate a distinct accumulation of three dehydrin-like proteins of 65, 60, and 14 kDa during cold acclimation. The cold hardiness and levels of dehydrin proteins decreased during the exposure to 15/12°C for 2 weeks. Results also confirmed that this treatment had no negative effect on chill unit accumulation. Densitometric scans of protein gels indicated a close association between the abundance of dehydrins and degree of cold hardiness in these cultivars. In addition, levels of the dehydrin proteins and cold hardiness remained about the same between 100% and >100% satisfaction of chilling requirement. The early detection of bone microdamages is crucial to make informed decisions about the therapy and taking precautionary treatments to avoid catastrophic fractures. Conventional computed tomography (CT) imaging faces obstacles in detecting bone microdamages due to the strong self‐attenuation of photons from bone and poor spatial resolution. Recent advances in CT technology as well as novel imaging probes can address this problem effectively. Herein, the bone microdamage imaging is demonstrated using ligand‐directed nanoparticles in conjunction with photon counting spectral CT. For the first time, Gram‐scale synthesis of hafnia (HfO2) nanoparticles is reported with surface modification by a chelator moiety. The feasibility of delineating these nanoparticles from bone and soft tissue of muscle is demonstrated with photon counting spectral CT equipped with advanced detector technology. The ex vivo and in vivo studies point to the accumulation of hafnia nanoparticles at microdamage site featuring distinct spectral signal. Due to their small sub‐5 nm size, hafnia nanoparticles are excreted through reticuloendothelial system organs without noticeable aggregation while not triggering any adverse side effects based on histological and liver enzyme function assessments. These preclinical studies highlight the potential of HfO2‐based nanoparticle contrast agents for skeletal system diseases due to their well‐placed K‐edge binding energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pixelated optical wireless systems can transmit at high speed by encoding data in transmitted images using spatial orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (spatial OFDM) but are susceptible to a number of limiting factors including defocus, linear fractional misalignment (LFM) and vignetting. This paper investigates the effects of these impairments on the performance of both forms of spatial OFDM: spatial DC-biased optical OFDM (SDCO-OFDM) and spatial asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (SACO-OFDM). The novelty of this paper is in the theoretical analysis of the effect of defocus on a spatial OFDM based pixelated system. The theoretical results for defocus are found to be in agreement with the simulation results reported in the literature. Furthermore, the joint effects of defocus, LFM and vignetting are mathematically described. Analytical and simulation results show that these three factors are largely independent of each other. Simulation results indicate that these impairments and their associated mitigation techniques influence the optimum choice of DC bias for SDCO-OFDM. Finally, it is shown that for the case of the joint impairments and for a given data rate, the bit error rate performance of SDCO-OFDM with the optimum bias is slightly better than that of SACO-OFDM.
