Highly elongate body plans have evolved multiple times in the Actinopterygii, and members of many of these groups are known to use lateral undulation on land. Here, we quantified components of the axial skeleton for four phylogenetically disparate actinopterygian fishes and one sarcopterygian to determine whether axial morphology may affect their locomotor kinematics. We tested species in water and on two terrestrial substrates: loose wet pebbles and wet sand. Differences in axial morphology translated to differences in wavelengths, amplitudes, and frequencies at the center of the body and tail while swimming, but overall, we consistently observed a similar shift in kinematic patterns when fish were moving on the two terrestrial treatments. Generally, our kinematic data support our hypothesis that elongate fishes increased their wave frequency and shorten their wavelengths on terrestrial substrates but we also observed lower wave amplitudes contrary to our prediction. As anticipated, animals exhibited a higher distance ratio (DR), our metric of locomotor efficiency, at the head, center of the body, and tail in aquatic trials. DRs were between 25% and 50% higher in water compared to terrestrial treatments. Locomotion was less effective on wet sand substrate compared to loose wet pebble substrate as exhibited by the discrepancy in DRs and wave patterns along the fish. These data suggest that loose wet pebble substrates do indeed provide vertical points for lateral force transmission and that highly elongate fish have an advantage when moving along this substrate. Our species varied greatly in their total vertebral numbers, 93–129, and in their proportion of precaudal (42–102) and caudal vertebral numbers (10–64). Therefore, despite major differences in vertebral proportions, we find that fishes with anguilliform body plans share similar suites of kinematic patterns within aquatic versus terrestrial treatments and that a pebble substrate can better facilitate axial movements. Summary: In this paper, we address the problem of state observation for sensorless control of switched reluctance motors (SRMs), that is, the regulation of the motor measuring only the voltage and the current of the electrical supply. Instrumental for the construction of the observer is the derivation of algebraic relations, which define regression models, between the unknown rotor flux and the measured quantities. With the knowledge of the flux, it is shown that the mechanical coordinates can be estimated with suitably tailored adaptive nonlinear observers. Replacing the observed states, in a certainty equivalent manner, with a full information stabilizing law completes the sensorless controller design. In contrast with other motors, there is no universally accepted mathematical model to describe the dynamics of SRMs. To widen our target audience, we present the results for four different mathematical models reported in the literature. Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients are at increased risk of insulin resistance (IR); however, the specific mechanisms mediating this association are currently unknown.Objective: To investigate whether the inflammatory activity associated with RA accounts for the observed defective glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism in these patients.Methods: We followed two main strategies: (i) extensive metabolic profiling of a RA cohort of 100 patients and 50 healthy control subjects and (ii) mechanistic studies carried out in both a collagen-induced arthritis mouse model and 3T3-L1 adipocytes treated with conditioned serum from RA patients.Results: Following the exclusion of obese and diabetic subjects, data from RA patients demonstrated a strong link between the degree of systemic inflammation and the development of IR. These results were strengthened by the observation that induction of arthritis in mice resulted in a global inflammatory state characterized by defective carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in different tissues. Adipose tissue was most susceptible to the RA-induced metabolic alterations. These metabolic effects were confirmed in adipocytes treated with serum from RA patients.Conclusions: Our results show that the metabolic disturbances associated with RA depend on the degree of inflammation and identify inflammation of adipose tissue as the initial target leading to IR and the associated molecular disorders of carbohydrate and lipid homeostasis. Thus, we anticipate that therapeutic strategies based on tighter control of inflammation and flares could provide promising approaches to normalize and/or prevent metabolic alterations associated with RA. A novel equine arteritis virus ( EAV) was isolated and sequenced from feral donkeys in Chile. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that the new virus and South African asinine strains diverged at least 100 years from equine EAV strains. Background To assess the selenium status of a group of schoolchildren from the Region of Madrid, Spain. Methods Study subjects comprised 483 children (216 boys and 267 girls) aged between 8 and 13 years. Selenium intake was determined using a 3-day food record. The foods consumed were transformed into energy and nutrients, and the selenium intake was compared with that recommended. Serum selenium levels were also recorded. Results Mean (SD) selenium intake [91.0 (25.2) μg day−1] was above the recommended level in 99.4% of subjects; the main dietary sources were cereals, meats, fish and milk products. The serum selenium concentration [mean (SD) 71.1 (14.4) μg L−1], however, was <60 μg L−1 in 13.9% of subjects, and <45 μg L−1 in 5.6%. The serum selenium concentration correlated with the selenium intake ( r = 0.169; P < 0.05). Children with a serum selenium concentration of <75 μg L−1 had significantly smaller selenium intakes than those with a serum concentration of ≥75 μg L−1. Conclusions Although selenium intake was generally above that recommended, the serum selenium concentration of the children could be improved. SUMMARY A solution to the longstanding problem of sensorless control of an electrical machine is provided in this paper. That is, the construction of an asymptotically stable controller that regulates the mechanical speed of the motor, measuring only the electrical coordinates. The result is presented for a non-salient permanent magnet synchronous motor perturbed by an unknown constant load torque. The proposed scheme is a fourth order nonlinear observer-based controller that does not rely on-intrinsically nonrobust-operations like open-loop integration of the systems dynamical model nor signal differentiation and can be easily implemented in real time. The controller is easy to commission, with the tuning gains directly determining the convergence rates of the position, speed, and load torque observers. Simulation and experimental results are presented. In particular, a comparison with a sensorless field-oriented controller, recently proposed in the drives literature, is carried out. In this paper the problem of designing excitation controllers to improve the transient stability of multi-machine power systems is addressed adopting two new perspectives. First, instead of the standard formulation of stabilization of an equilibrium point, we aim here at the more realistic objective of keeping the difference between the generators rotor angles bounded and their speeds equal-which is called synchronization in the power literature-and translates into a problem of stabilization of a set. Second, we adopt the classical viewpoint of power systems as a set of coupled nonlinear pendula, and express our control objective as ensuring that some suitable defined pendula dynamics are (asymptotically) immersed into the power system dynamics. Our main contribution is the explicit computation of a control law for the two-machine system that achieves global synchronization. Childhood obesity is associated with a pro-atherogenic phenotype contributing to increased cardiovascular disease ( CVD) risk. This single-arm pilot study examined the effects of a lifestyle intervention on lipoprotein particle size and cholesterol distribution in obese Latino adolescents. Fifteen obese Latino adolescents (15.0 ± 1.0 years) completed a 12-week nutrition education and exercise intervention. Low-density lipoprotein ( LDL) particle size and distribution of cholesterol in lipoprotein subclasses were determined via polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The intervention resulted in increases in mean LDL particle size (269.3 ± 3.4 to 271.6 ± 2.9 Å, P = 0.0003) and cholesterol in large high-density lipoprotein ( HDL) subfractions (22.4 ± 11.2 to 26.8 ± 10.6% area, P = 0.007) along with decreases of cholesterol in small LDL (1.6 ± 2.0 to 0.6 ± 1.2% area, P < 0.01) and HDL subfractions (23.2 ± 9.4 to 19.0 ± 6.7% area, P = 0.05). These improvements were observed independent of changes in weight (90.7 ± 26.2 to 89.9 ± 27.8 kg, P > 0.05) and suggest that lifestyle modification in obese youth may reduce cardiovascular risk by shifting lipoprotein particle size and cholesterol distribution to a less atherogenic phenotype. Background Vitamin D plays an essential role in bone mineralisation and its deficiency is associated with several chronic diseases. Some studies have reported a deficient status of vitamin D in Spanish and European population. The present study aimed to assess vitamin D intake, dietary sources of this nutrient and its adequacy with respect to the dietary reference intakes ( DRI) in a representative sample of Spanish adults. Methods Four hundred and eighteen adults (aged 18-60 years) from 15 Spanish provinces were studied. They constituted a representative sample of the Spanish adult population. Energy and nutrient intake were determined using a 24-h dietary recall questionnaire for two consecutive days. Vitamin D intake was compared with the DRI for this vitamin. Results Mean (SD) vitamin D intake was 3.5 (4.0) μg day-1 (69.5% of the DRI). Of the participants studied, 81.6% had vitamin D intakes below the DRI and 68.7% had intakes below 67% of the DRI. Of the vitamin D, 91.4% came from food sources and 8.6% came from dietary supplements. The main food sources of vitamin D were fish, eggs, dairy products, cereals, oils and meat. In addition, those subjects who met the DRI for vitamin D had a higher consumption of fish, vegetables and fruits and a lower consumption of meats than those subjects who did not meet the DRI. Conclusions Vitamin D intake was inadequate in the sample of the adult Spanish population. SUMMARY Recently, it has been established that power factor (PF) improvement for nonlinear loads with nonsinusoidal source voltage is equivalent to imposing the property of cyclodissipativity to the source terminals. Using this framework, the classical capacitor and inductor compensators were interpreted in terms of energy equalization. The purpose of this brief note is to extend this approach in three directions. In the result reported in the literature, the supply rate is a function of the load, which is usually unknown, stymieing the applicability of the technique for compensator synthesis. Our first contribution is a new cyclodissipativity condition, which is also equivalent to PF improvement, but whose supply rate is now function of the compensator. Second, we consider general lossless linear compensators, instead of only capacitive or inductive compensators. As a result, we show that the PF is improved if and only if a certain equalization condition between the weighted powers of inductors and capacitors of the load is ensured. Finally, we exhibit the gap between the ideal compensator, namely the one that achieves unitary PF, and the aforementioned equalization condition. Soil organic matter composition and biochemical properties were determined in mountain calcimorphic Mediterranean soils under different vegetation (cultivated soils, secondary bush, high mountain bush, juniper, evergreen oak and pine) to assess the impact of soil use on the size and activity of microbial communities. Our results indicated that clearing forest leads to a general decline in the performance of soil organic carbon sequestration and associated enzymatic activities. However, when soil enzymatic activities (dehydrogenase, catalase, phosphodiesterase, β-glucosidase, urease and casein-protease) were expressed as ratios to total organic carbon (specific activities), a conspicuous increase in their activities was observed in cleared soils as compared with forest soils, suggesting enhanced hydrolytic potential in the former. In addition, the negative correlation observed between qCO2 (metabolic quotient) and water retention at −1500 kPa, could be interpreted as an adaptive strategy against low soil moisture by microbial communities in cleared soils. This indicates the importance of describing soil quality in terms of long-term soil organic C sequestration and/or resistance of the organic matter to microbial transformation. These features were reflected in the visible and infrared spectra of humic acids, which suggested humification mechanisms involving mainly an alteration of plant macromolecules with poor incorporation of characteristic microbial metabolites in the forest soils whereas the opposite effect was observed in cleared soils. The sterile insect technique (SIT) requires production of large quantities of sterile males able to successfully compete with wild males for wild females. During eradication of a pest population, the release of fertile insects or capture of non-marked released flies can have deleterious effects and trigger costly control measures. These perceived risks encourage program managers to apply high radiation doses and high doses of marking dye. In addition, mass rearing factories are strategically located away from release areas to prevent escape of fertile individuals within eradicated areas, raising the need for lengthy transport. Such is the case for Anastrepha obliqua Macquart (Diptera: Tephritidae) released in mango producing areas of Mexico under an SIT-based eradication campaign. Here, we examined several standard quality-control parameters for mass-reared A. obliqua subjected to various time periods under hypoxia during transport, marked with different doses of fluorescent dye, and subjected to different radiation doses. Such factors were evaluated in isolation and in conjunction. Overall, long periods of hypoxia, high marking doses, and high radiation doses reduced the number of flying adults and increased the number of non-emerged pupae. Some quality-control parameters such as number of deformed adults, part-emerged pupae, and non-flying adults provided less informative guidance or redundant information of fly performance. Some tests such as mortality under stress and mating propensity in small cages were useless in detecting differences in quality among treatments for parameters evaluated during experiments. We discuss the quantity/safety-quality/performance conflict during eradication using SIT, propose different strategies according to different stages during eradication (management, suppression, eradication, outbreaks in free areas), where males irradiated at low doses and marked with low doses of dye can be released during early suppression, and examine the pertinence of carrying out different quality-control tests. The Caricaceae is a small family of tropical trees and herbs in which most species are dioecious. In the present study, we extend our previous work on dioecy in the Caricaceae, characterising the morphological variation in sexual expression in flowers of the dioecious tree Jacaratia mexicana. We found that, in J. mexicana, female plants produce only pistillate flowers, while male plants are sexually variable and can bear three different types of flowers: staminate, pistillate and perfect. To characterise the distinct types of flowers, we measured 26 morphological variables. Our results indicate that: (i) pistillate flowers from male trees carry healthy-looking ovules and are morphologically similar, although smaller than, pistillate flowers on female plants; (ii) staminate flowers have a rudimentary, non-functional pistil and are the only flowers capable of producing nectar; and (iii) perfect flowers produce healthy-looking ovules and pollen, but have smaller ovaries than pistillate flowers and fewer anthers than staminate flowers, and do not produce nectar. The restriction of sexual variation to male trees is consistent with the evolutionary path of dioecy from hermaphrodite ancestors through the initial invasion of male-sterile plants and a subsequent gradual reduction in female fertility in cosexual individuals (gynodioecy pathway), but further work is needed to confirm this hypothesis. Objective To evaluate the repair techniques of continuous and interrupted methods for episiotomy or perineal tears. Design A randomised controlled trial. Setting The Hospital Universitario Principe de Asturias, a state hospital belonging to the community of Madrid. Sample Four hundred forty-five women who had undergone vaginal deliveries with episiotomies or second-grade tearing of the perineum between September 2005 and July 2007. Methods One group was repaired with continuous, nonlocking sutures involving the vagina, perineum, and subcutaneous tissues. The other group had continuous, locking sutures of the vagina, interrupted sutures in the perineal muscles, and interrupted transcutaneous sutures. The threads used for stitching were identical in both groups. Main outcome measures The participants were questioned regarding the sensation of pain and the use of painkillers on the second and the tenth days, and 3 months postpartum. Results When comparing the group with continuous suture to the group with interrupted sutures, the differences included less repair time (1 minute; P= 0.017) and less suture material used (relative risk [RR], 3.2, 95% CI: 2.6–4.0). The comparison of pain on the second and tenth days, and 3 months postpartum were not statistically different between the two techniques (RR, 1.08, 95% CI: 0.74–1.57; RR, 0.96, 95% CI: 0.59–1.55; and RR, 0.68, 95% CI: 0.19–2.46, respectively). Conclusions Although we did not demonstrate that one technique was better than the other in the incidence of pain in the short or long term, we showed that episiotomy and perineal tear repairs with continuous suturing were quicker and used less suture material without an increase in complication than interrupted suturing. A 55-years-old woman was diagnosed with pneumonia and was treated with meropenem; 5 days later she developed epileptic seizures. She had been treated with valproic acid for 16 years to control her epileptic seizures. Her serum valproic acid concentration was low during treatment with meropenem than previously recorded despite an increase of valproic dose. As soon as administration of meropenem was withdrawn, valproic acid concentration increased to previous levels and her seizures stopped. Meropenem decreases valproic acid concentration, and may promote the development of epileptic seizures in previously controlled epileptic patients. The differential diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome is a major challenge to clinical endocrinologists, especially those infrequent cases referred to as occult ectopic ACTH syndromes. Although bronchial carcinoids are well known to be a cause of Cushing's syndrome due to ectopic ACTH secretion, very few cases of carcinoid tumourlets causing an ACTH ectopic syndrome have been reported, and their origin remains controversial. For some authors, tumourlets and typical carcinoids represent distinct pathological entities, whilst others hold that tumourlets are merely microscopic carcinoid tumours. We report a patient with an aggressive Cushing's syndrome that required bilateral adrenalectomy, diagnosed 22 years before a 3-cm lung nodule became apparent on routine chest X-ray. The biopsy after lung surgery revealed a typical peripheral bronchial carcinoid surrounded by tumourlets. Both tumourlets and carcinoid tumour showed strongly positive ACTH immunostaining. Recently, Arioglu et al. (1998) reported a case of Cushing's syndrome caused by pulmonary carcinoid tumourlets, concluding that this entity should be considered in the differential diagnosis of occult ectopic ACTH syndrome. Furthermore, we consider that the carcinoid tumourlets found in our patient, were the initial source of ACTH, leading to Cushing's syndrome with a rapid onset, and that a loss of cell proliferation control in one of such tumourlets many years later, could have resulted in the development of a typical carcinoid tumour, reinforcing the theory of a common origin of these lesions. Civil commitment in the United States historically has followed a medical, targeting individuals with serious mental disorders and providing for their treatment in the least restrictive setting. In the last decade, however, commitment laws have appeared in some states permitting the hospitalization of personality-disordered criminal offenders at the end of a penal sentence. The American Psychiatric Association has fiercely opposed these laws. The U.S. Supreme Court has given its qualified approval, although legal challenges persist. These laws, together with British proposals to permit the civil commitment of dangerous personality-disordered individuals, should be resisted by all professional disciplines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes the current problem of bullying in schools in Andalucia (southern Spain) and goes on to examine some possible responses being developed at the University of Seville to meet the challenge of school-based aggression. The project goes under the collective rubric of “SAVE”—The Seville Anti-Bullying in School Project. The SAVE project combines an investigative research initiative with a preventive action programme aimed at reducing the problems of violence in primary and secondary schools. This takes a whole-school approach (similar to that used in the Sheffield Anti-Bullying Project in the U.K.) And involves coordinated action against bullying across 13 schools situated in socially deprived areas in Seville. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in pregnant women is an uncommon disease. It could be easily misdiagnosed because of physiologic changes during pregnancy; in some cases, patients could remain asymptomatic maintaining elevated calcium serum levels, and this situation represents a threat to the health of both mother and fetus. We present two cases of PHPT during pregnancy and their evolution after surgical treatment in the second trimester; there were no observed complications during pregnancy or delivery in our patients. Early diagnosis and medical/surgical treatment in PHPT are necessary for avoiding maternal and fetal complications which could not be predicted based on duration or severity of hypercalcemia. To analyse interactions in the Phytophthora capsici-pepper (Capsicum annuum L. ) system, three pepper lines (`Morrón INIA 224', P1201232' and 'SCM 334') with various degrees of resistance to P. capsici and three P. capsici isolates with increasing aggressiveness were used Inoculations were made when plants had 4-6 leaves, either by irrigating the culture substrate with P. capsici zoospore suspensions at increasing concentrations of up to 3 × 105/ml, or by adding mycelial suspension. P. capsici isolate 'Ca' was the least aggressive, followd by '8303' and 'B1'. The logistic function was appropriate to describing cumulative mortalities of pepper seedlings inoculated with different P. capsici zoospore concentrations. The inoculum concentration required for 50% mortality classified pepper lines as susceptible (Morróon INIA224') and resistant ('P1201232' and 'SCM334'), the former being less resistant than the latter Isolates 'Ca' and '8303' caused very different mortalities both with zoospore and mycelial inoculations, which allowed them to be classified as belonging to two different vertical pathotypes (P0 and P1). Isolate 'Bi' acted similarly to isolate '8303' when inoculated on Morrón' and 'SCM334'. but its behaviour was dependent on zoospore concentration when inoculated on 'P1201232' It also proved to be similar to 'Ca'using mycelial inoculation. As the case of `BF would not be an exception among P. capsici isolates, the two vertical pathotypes P1 and P0 would be the higher (isolate `8303') and lower (isolate 'Ca') limits of a range of aggressiveness. According to our previous investigations, resistance to Phytophthora capsici in Capsicum annuum genotypes, 'Line 29', 'P1201232', 'P1201234' and Serrano Criollo de Morelos 334 ('SCM334'), seems to be controlled by three genes. In order to determine the genic relationships between these four sources of resistance, three experiments were conducted which included the four genotypes, their F1s, F2s, F3s and BC1 generations together with the susceptible pepper genotype 'Morrón INIA 224'. Inoculations were made, when plants had 46 leaves, by irrigating the culture substrate with a zoospore suspension of P. capsici isolate 'Bl'. Though the four genotypes showed percentages of resistance close to a 100%, none of them actually reached this level in the three experiments. 'SCM334' was the most resistant genotype, transmitting a high level of resistance to its F1, F2 and BC1 generations. 'Line 29' was more resistant than 'P1201232' and 'P1201234'. However, the F1, F2 and BC1 generations of these three lines showed similar degrees of resistance. The four genotypes seem to have one of the three genes postulated for their resistance in common. All genes displayed a similar level of resistance, except the specific genes of 'SCM334', the effect of which was slightly higher. Several working procedures are suggested for breeding programmes. In order to establish a genetic model of the resistance to Phytophthora capsici in Capsicum annuum genotype 'SCM-334', two experiments were conducted which included 'SCM-334', as well as, the susceptible line 'Morrón INIA 224' and their F1, F2, F3 and BC1 generations. We also tried to introgress a recessive gene, hypothetically responsible for resistance to P. capsici, from 'SCM-334' into 'Morrón INIA 224'. Inoculations were made, when plants had 4--6 leaves, by irrigating the culture substrate with a zoospore suspension of P. capsici isolate 'BI'. The χ² test was applied to segregating generations to determine how many genes were involved in resistance. The hypothesis which explained the obtained segregations best, although not completely, was one that assumes 3 genes in 'SCM-334', with at least 3 alleles in the heterozygous condition or 4 at any position, present in any genotype in order to be resistant. The article focuses on pestiviruses, or ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses, in pudus in Chile. Pestiviruses are small, enveloped RNA viruses that belong to the family flaviviridae, which includes bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus, classical swine fever virus and border disease virus. In cervids, pestiviruses have been isolated from free-ranging roe deer, fallow deer and red deer. The development of adequate control programmes for BVD virus in cattle depends on knowing whether wild ruminants have their own pestivirus strains or whether they are reservoirs of cattle strains.

Purpose: To assess the influence of print orientation on the surface roughness of implant-supported interim crowns manufactured by using digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing procedures., Materials and Methods: An implant-supported maxillary right premolar full-contour crown was obtained. The interim restoration design was used to fabricate 30 specimens with 3 print orientations (0, 45, and 90 degrees) using an interim resin material (GC Temp PRINT) and a DLP printer (Asiga MAX UV) (n = 10). The specimens were manufactured, and each was cemented to an implant abutment with autopolymerizing composite resin cement (Multilink Hybrid Abutment). Surface roughness was assessed on the buccal surface of the premolar specimen by using an optical measurement system (InfiniteFocusG5 plus). The data were analyzed with a Shapiro-Wilk test, resulting in a normal distribution. One-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD tests were selected (α = 0.05)., Results: Statistically significant discrepancies were found in the surface roughness mean values among the groups tested (p < 0.001). The lowest mean ± standard deviation surface roughness was found with the 90-degree group (1.2 ± 0.36 μm), followed by the 0-degree orientation (2.23 ± 0.18 μm) and the 45-degree group (3.18 ± 0.31 μm)., Conclusions: Print orientation parameter significantly impacted the surface roughness of the implant-supported interim crowns manufactured by using the additive procedures tested., (© 2023 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)
