We present a novel plasma system that can generate a plasma‐activated medium by changing the proportion of reactive gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen in the plasma flow. The correlation between the biological activity of plasma‐activated solutions prepared under multiple plasma gas‐flow conditions was evaluated. Mixed nitrogen, in addition to oxygen, in the gas flow is most powerful for producing plasma‐activated Ringer's lactate solution against antitumor effects on ovarian cancer cells as compared with oxygen or nitrogen alone. The antitumor effect of plasma‐activated solutions is controllable by the modification of the proportion of reactive gases (especially nitrogen and oxygen gases) in the plasma flow. These results suggest that the plasma flow conditions may be one of the candidates for the specifications of the plasma‐activated solutions to the therapeutic effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of severely symptomatic monomorphic ventricular premature beats (VPBs) is reported to be a safe and effective treatment option. However, the chronic hemodynamic effects of these VPBs have not been precisely evaluated. Methods and Results: We sought to investigate chronic effects after decreasing the number of VPBs by RFCA. A total of 47 patients who had no underlying heart disease and frequent monomorphic VPBs, consisting of more than 10,000 beats per day (24,194 ± 12,516 beats per day), were enrolled. Patients were treated with RFCA and followed up over 6 months as outpatients. Echocardiography and serum B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) level were repeatedly checked before and after RFCA. In 38 patients, whose VPBs were dramatically decreased to less than 1,000 beats per day by successful RFCA, left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic dimension (LVEDd) and end-systolic dimension (LVESd) measured by echocardiography decreased significantly (LVEDd: 50 ± 5 to 48 ± 5 mm, P < 0.01; LVESd: 33 ± 7 to 30 ± 6 mm, P < 0.01) in association with improvement of BNP level (39.9 ± 34.1 to 16.8 ± 10.3 pg/mL, P = 0.0001). In nine patients, whose VPBs were treated unsuccessfully by RFCA or that recurred, LV dimensions and BNP level did not change during the follow-up period. Conclusion: Significant improvement in LV dimensions and serum BNP level appeared to indicate that RFCA of VPBs ameliorated occult cardiac dysfunction induced by frequent VPBs. We have recognized percutaneous transluminal coronary artery angioplasty (PTCA) as an important procedure for achieving myocardial revascularization. PTCA has been performed for stable and unstable angina, acute myocardial infarction, and silent myocardial ischemia. Among many new devices, the coronary stent is the most important advancement in PTCA. Frequent stent use is due to the introduction of antiplatelet therapy to prevent stent thrombosis. One serious problem is that PTCA, even with stent use, often causes chronic restenosis. This problem has not been solved, however, despite various strategies. Aggressive lipid-lowering therapy is one of the most important therapies for coronary heart disease. The findings in aggressive lipid-lowering therapy show us its importance. We report that low-density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis, when performed immediately before and after PTCA, can prevent restenosis of coronary artery lesions. Lipid-lowering therapy should be applied more aggressively with medicine and/or with LDL apheresis for patients who have undergone PTCA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study was designed to examine the time-course of iodine elimination by hemodialysis to determine a desirable duration for dialysis after angiography to prevent contrast media nephropathy (CMN) in patients with renal failure. Reduction rates of iodine by hemodialysis (DRR) of 1 to 3 h and the renal elimination of iodine (RER) for 20 h after hemodialysis were prospectively examined in 8 chronic renal failure (CRF) patients. The mean DRR was 46.6% at 1 h, 65.2% at 2 h, and 75.1% at 3 h, and the mean RER was 49.4% in the CRF patients. Renal function significantly deteriorated in 2 CRF patients after angiography. Plasma iodine was eliminated by more than 80% after 2 h of hemodialysis following angiography, and the subsequent renal elimination in patients with mild-to-moderate renal failure was also examined. There is no need of prophylactic hemodialysis to prevent CMN for these patients when they have no additional risk factors such as a high dose of contrast medium, diabetes mellitus, or severe heart failure. However, 2 h of hemodialysis is desirable immediately after angiography for patients with moderate renal failure and one additional risk factor, and three hours or more of hemodialysis is also desirable for patients with severe renal failure, and for those with moderate renal failure having two or more additional risk factors.
