Owing to an absence or lack of soft (and/or liquid) components, electrochemo‐mechanical effects are imperative for all‐solid‐state batteries (ASBs) based on inorganic solid electrolytes (SEs). As this aspect has been overlooked, relevant investigation has remained scarce. In this work, the development of a new operando differential electrochemical pressiometry (DEP) for ASBs is reported. The time‐ (or capacity‐) derivative differential pressure signals (dP/dt or dP/dQ) reflecting corresponding differential volume changes of electrode active materials feature the specific state of charges (SOCs). This finding leads to a precise estimation of the SOCs of graphite (Gr) electrodes in LiNi0.70Co0.15Mn0.15O2 (NCM)/Gr all‐solid‐state full cells using sulfide SEs with varying capacity ratios of negative to positive electrodes (n/p ratios); this is corroborated by complementary analysis using a three‐electrode electrochemical cell and ex situ X‐ray diffraction measurements. Furthermore, electrochemo‐mechanical behaviors of NCM/Gr full cells with Gr electrodes employing SEs excluding or including reductively unstable Li10GeP2S12 are investigated. Notable volume changes caused by lithiation of Li10GeP2S12 are detected. Importantly, significantly delayed SOC for Gr caused by a severe side reaction with Li10GeP2S12 is disclosed by the operando DEP result. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

All-solid-state sodium-ion batteries that operate at room temperature are attractive candidates for use in large-scale energy storage systems. However, materials innovation in solid electrolytes is imperative to fulfill multiple requirements, including high conductivity, functional synthesis protocols for achieving intimate ionic contact with active materials, and air stability. A new, highly conductive (1.1 mS cm−1 at 25 °C, Ea=0.20 eV) and dry air stable sodium superionic conductor, tetragonal Na3SbS4, is described. Importantly, Na3SbS4 can be prepared by scalable solution processes using methanol or water, and it exhibits high conductivities of 0.1-0.3 mS cm−1. The solution-processed, highly conductive solidified Na3SbS4 electrolyte coated on an active material (NaCrO2) demonstrates dramatically improved electrochemical performance in all-solid-state batteries. The excellent stability of sulfide solid electrolytes with solvate ionic liquids Li(triethylene glycol dimethyl ether)bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Li(G3)TFSI), and their application for high‐performance, all‐solid‐state lithium‐ion batteries are successfully demonstrated. The addition of a small amount of Li(G3)TFSI gives an alternative ionic pathway through normally poor solid–solid contacts, leading to a dramatic increase in LiFePO4 composite electrode capacity. As lithium rechargeable batteries are considered a potential candidate for large-scale energy storage applications in devices such as electric vehicles (EVs) and smart grids, their safety has become of prime concern. This calls for the need to replace the flammable organic liquid electrolyte (LE) with an inorganic solid electrolyte (SE), and thus, develop bulk-type all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASLBs), fabricated using a scalable process. Sulfide SEs are considered the most competitive candidate owing to their high conductivity at room temperature (10−3-10−2 S cm−1), which is comparable to that of LEs, and their ductility, which enables the fabrication of ASLBs simply using cold pressing. In the present review, issues and challenges to be faced for the fabrication of bulk-type ASLBs using sulfide SEs are presented and discussed, with a special focus on the development of SEs, compatibility of the electrode materials with SEs, and structure of the composite electrodes. Recent progress made with the aim of addressing the aforementioned issues and challenges is also presented, to provide an outlook on the future of SEs and ASLBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For mass production of all‐solid‐state lithium‐ion batteries (ASLBs) employing highly Li+ conductive and mechanically sinterable sulfide solid electrolytes (SEs), the wet‐slurry process is imperative. Unfortunately, the poor chemical stability of sulfide SEs severely restrict available candidates for solvents and in turn polymeric binders. Moreover, the binders interrupt Li+‐ionic contacts at interfaces, resulting in the below par electrochemical performance. In this work, a new scalable slurry fabrication protocol for sheet‐type ASLB electrodes made of Li+‐conductive polymeric binders is reported. The use of intermediate‐polarity solvent (e.g., dibromomethane) for the slurry allows for accommodating Li6PS5Cl and solvate‐ionic‐liquid‐based polymeric binders (NBR‐Li(G3)TFSI, NBR: nitrile−butadiene rubber, G3: triethylene glycol dimethyl ether, LiTFSI: lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) together without suffering from undesirable side reactions or phase separation. The LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 and Li4Ti5O12 electrodes employing NBR‐Li(G3)TFSI show high capacities of 174 and 160 mA h g−1 at 30 °C, respectively, which are far superior to those using conventional NBR (144 and 76 mA h g−1). Moreover, high areal capacity of 7.4 mA h cm−2 is highlighted for the LiNi0.7Co0.15Mn0.15O2 electrodes with ultrahigh mass loading of 45 mg cm−2. The facilitated Li+‐ionic contacts at interfaces paved by NBR‐Li(G3)TFSI are evidenced by the complementary analysis from electrochemical and 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. Bulk‐type all‐solid‐state lithium batteries are highly promising candidates for large scale energy storage applications because of their superior safety.
