The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze the factors that had a significant effect on securing a successful surgical resection (surgical margin) in oral cancer surgery. One hundred forty-eight consecutive patients who underwent planned radical resection of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) were analyzed. Successful resection was judged if pathological examination of the surgical specimen revealed a clear surgical margin (no SCC within 5 mm, n = 116), while an unsuccessful resection was judged if there was a close and involved surgical margin (SCC within 5 mm, n = 21; and SCC at margin, n = 11). Univariate analyses showed that gender, age, and T-classification had significant influence on successful surgical resection. The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.042, 95% CI = 1.001-1.084), T-classification (OR = 1.656, 95% CI = 1.060-2.587), and the presence of preoperative treatment (OR = 2.868, 95% CI = 1.047-7.85) had significant effects on successful surgical resection. The results of this study suggested that successful resection of oral SCC was difficult in patients with either older age or advanced (T4) tumor. In this study, dextran-coated polyvinyl formal (PVF) sponges with high water-holding capability were developed to increase the osteogenic response in the PVF sponge. The study aimed to estimate the effect of the increased water-holding capability of the sponges on osteogenic capacity at a bone defect site in the rabbit femur epiphysis. Bone formation was evaluated using radiography, microcomputed tomography (CT), and histological analysis at 2, 4, and 6 weeks after implantation. As shown by radiography and micro-CT findings, the dextran-coated PVF sponge without water-holding capability showed little bone formation at all evaluated time points. However, the dextran-coated PVF sponge with high water-holding capability showed increasing bone formation around the implant at 4 and 6 weeks after implantation. Furthermore, as shown by micro-CT quantitative analysis, the grafted PVF sponge with high water-holding capability showed significantly greater values for percentage of bone volume per total volume and mean bone mineral density compared with the grafted PVF sponge without water-holding capability at 4 and 6 weeks after implantation. These results suggest that the dextran-coated PVF sponge with high water-holding capability promoted osteogenesis in vivo. The aim of the study is to estimate the effects of the water-holding capability of the polyvinyl formal (PVF) sponges on osteogenic response in vitro experiments. The rat bone marrow stem cells (BMCs) were seeded and cultured for up to 4 weeks under static conditions in osteogenic media to evaluate the adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization on the Dextran-coated PVF sponges with or without water-holding capability. The BMCs seeded onto the PVF sponges with water-holding capability showed more significant increases in DNA content, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, osteocalcin content, and calcium deposition than those without water-holding capability. These results suggest that the Dextran-coated PVF sponges with high water-holding capability would have potential uses as both a new scaffold to bone tissue engineering and as a new biomaterial. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We undertook a three-dimensional reconstruction of intramuscular collagen networks of bovine muscle using an immunohistochemical/confocal laser-scanning microscopic method. By immunohistochemical staining, type I and III collagens were observed mainly in the perimysium, while type IV collagen was observed in the endomysium. On the other hand, type V and VI collagens were observed in both the perimysium and endomysium. By confocal laser-scanning microscopy, the collagen observed in the perimysium was three-dimensionally reconstructed as plate-shaped layers whereas the collagen observed in the endomysium surrounded myofibers. The three-dimensionally reconstructed observations using immunohistochemical/confocal laser-scanning microscopic method is useful for investigating collagen networks in muscle. Objective: To examine in vivo the effects of a mixture of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA) plus phospholipids on joint lubrication and articular cartilage degeneration., Methods: Experimental osteoarthritis (OA) of the right knee was induced by anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligament transection in 40 rabbits. The animals were subjected to 8 consecutive weekly intraarticular administrations of high molecular weight HA (the HA200 group), conventional molecular weight HA (the HA80 group), or high molecular weight HA plus L-delta dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine liposomes (the PHA group) and were killed 1 week after the final injection. The remaining transected right knees (the OA group) and randomly selected nontransected contralateral left knees (the control group) were collected simultaneously. Each group (n = 10) was divided into 2 equal subgroups, one of which was evaluated histologically while the other was subjected to a lubricating ability test using a pendulum friction tester., Results: The injected knees had a tendency to demonstrate less damage to the articular cartilage compared with the OA group, and the histologic findings in all groups except for the PHA group differed significantly from the control group. There was a significant difference in the mean +/- SD friction coefficient between the control group (0.0100 +/- 0.00300) and the OA (0.0206 +/- 0.00649), HA200 (0.0190 +/- 0.00427), and HA80 (0.0177 +/- 0.00712) groups (P < 0.05 for each comparison), but not between the control group and the PHA group (0.0150 +/- 0.00330) (P = 0.15)., Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first in vivo study to examine whether intraarticular injections of phospholipids influence joint lubrication by acting as a boundary lubricant, thus protecting articular cartilage from degenerative changes.
