- Abstract
Diabetes increases mortality risk and reduces life expectancy. This chapter summarizes present knowledge, including personal research in the Verona Diabetes Study, regarding the assessment of the mortality risk profile in elderly type 2 diabetic patients and shows how this profile changes on going from middle to old age. Many factors increase the risk of cardiovascular mortality in young diabetic patients but few studies have addressed this in older patients. When evaluating cardiovascular risk factors, age represents the strongest predictor of mortality and often confounds other risk factors. The classic and diabetes-specific predictors, such as duration and severity of the disease, metabolic control, treatment and depression, are reviewed. Stabilizing glycaemia and body mass index, along with global control of risk factors, would prevent many deaths. Achievement of these targets requires continuing efforts to educate patients, physicians and the general community. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
