A holistic understanding of plant strategies to acquire soil resources is pivotal in achieving sustainable food security. However, we lack knowledge about variety‐specific root and rhizosphere traits for resource acquisition, their plasticity and adaptation to drought. We conducted a greenhouse experiment to phenotype root and rhizosphere traits (mean root diameter [Root D], specific root length [SRL], root tissue density, root nitrogen content, specific rhizosheath mass [SRM], arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi [AMF] colonization) of 16 landraces and 22 modern cultivars of temperate maize (Zea mays L.). Our results demonstrate that landraces and modern cultivars diverge in their root and rhizosphere traits. Although landraces follow a 'do‐it‐yourself' strategy with high SRLs, modern cultivars exhibit an 'outsourcing' strategy with increased mean Root Ds and a tendency towards increased root colonization by AMF. We further identified that SRM indicates an 'outsourcing' strategy. Additionally, landraces were more drought‐responsive compared to modern cultivars based on multitrait response indices. We suggest that breeding leads to distinct resource acquisition strategies between temperate maize varieties. Future breeding efforts should increasingly target root and rhizosphere economics, with SRM serving as a valuable proxy for identifying varieties employing an outsourcing resource acquisition strategy. Summary: Biophysicochemical rhizosheath properties play a vital role in plant drought adaptation. However, their integration into the framework of plant drought response is hampered by incomplete mechanistic understanding of their drought responsiveness and unknown linkage to intraspecific plant–soil drought reactions.Thirty‐eight Zea mays varieties were grown under well‐watered and drought conditions to assess the drought responsiveness of rhizosheath properties, such as soil aggregation, rhizosheath mass, net‐rhizodeposition, and soil organic carbon distribution. Additionally, explanatory traits, including functional plant trait adaptations and changes in soil enzyme activities, were measured.Drought restricted soil structure formation in the rhizosheath and shifted plant–carbon from litter‐derived organic matter in macroaggregates to microbially processed compounds in microaggregates. Variety‐specific functional trait modifications determined variations in rhizosheath drought responsiveness. Drought responses of the plant–soil system ranged among varieties from maintaining plant–microbial interactions in the rhizosheath through accumulation of rhizodeposits, to preserving rhizosheath soil structure while increasing soil exploration through enhanced root elongation.Drought‐induced alterations at the root–soil interface may hold crucial implications for ecosystem resilience in a changing climate. Emerging evidence points out that the responses of soil organic carbon (SOC) to nitrogen (N) addition differ along the soil profile, highlighting the importance of synthesizing results from different soil layers. Here, using a global meta‐analysis, we found that N addition significantly enhanced topsoil (0–30 cm) SOC by 3.7% (±1.4%) in forests and grasslands. In contrast, SOC in the subsoil (30–100 cm) initially increased with N addition but decreased over time. The model selection analysis revealed that experimental duration and vegetation type are among the most important predictors across a wide range of climatic, environmental, and edaphic variables. The contrasting responses of SOC to N addition indicate the importance of considering deep soil layers, particularly for long‐term continuous N deposition. Finally, the lack of depth‐dependent SOC responses to N addition in experimental and modeling frameworks has likely resulted in the overestimation of changes in SOC storage under enhanced N deposition. Increased human‐derived nitrogen (N) loading in terrestrial ecosystems has caused widespread ecosystem‐level phosphorus (P) limitation. In response, plants and soil micro‐organisms adopt a series of P‐acquisition strategies to offset N loading‐induced P limitation. Many of these strategies impose costs on carbon (C) allocation by plants and soil micro‐organisms; however, it remains unclear how P‐acquisition strategies affect soil C cycling. Herein, we review the literature on the effects of N loading on P limitation and outline a conceptual overview of how plant and microbial P‐acquisition strategies may affect soil organic carbon (SOC) stabilization and decomposition in terrestrial ecosystems.Excessive input of N significantly enhances plant biomass production, soil acidification, and produces plant litterfall with high N/P ratios, which can aggravate ecosystem‐level P limitation.Long‐term N loading can cause plants and soil micro‐organisms to alter their functional traits to increase P acquisition. Plants can release carboxylate exudates and phosphatases, modify root morphological traits, facilitate the formation of symbiotic associations with mycorrhizal fungi and stimulate the abundance of P‐mineralizing and P‐solubilizing micro‐organisms. Releasing carboxylate exudates and phosphatases could accelerate SOC decomposition, whereas changing symbiotic associations and root morphological traits (e.g. an increase in fine root length) may contribute to higher SOC stabilization. Increased relative abundances of P‐mineralizing and P‐solubilizing bacteria can accelerate P mining and SOC decay, which may decrease microbial C use efficiency and subsequently lower SOC sequestration.The trade‐offs between different plant P‐acquisition strategies under N loading should be among future research priorities due to their cascading impacts on soil C storage. Quantifying ecosystem thresholds for P adaption to increased N loading is important because P‐acquisition strategies are effective when N loading is below the N threshold. Moreover, understanding the response of P‐acquisition strategies at different levels of native soil N availability could provide insight to divergent P‐acquisition strategies across sites and ecosystems. Altogether, P‐acquisition strategies should be explicitly considered in Earth System Models to generate more realistic predictions of the effects of N loading on soil C cycling. Rivers regulate the global carbon cycle by transferring particulate organic carbon (POC) from terrestrial landscapes to marine sedimentary basins, but the processes controlling the amount and composition of fluvially exported POC are poorly understood. We propose that hydrodynamic sorting processes modify POC fluxes during fluvial transit. We test this hypothesis by studying POC transported along a ∼1,200 km reach of the Rio Bermejo, Argentina. Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry revealed that POC was either fine, mineral‐associated organic matter, or coarse discrete organic particles. Mineral‐associated POC is more resistant to oxidation and has a lower particle settling velocity than discrete POC. Consequently, hydraulic sorting and downstream fining amplify the proportion of fine, mineral‐associated POC from ∼55% to ∼78% over 1,220 km of downstream transit. This suggests that mineral‐associated POC has a greater probability of export and preservation in marine basins than plant detritus, which may be oxidized to CO2 during transit. Rivers are important for the carbon cycle because they deliver large amounts of organic carbon from mountains to the oceans. If this carbon is quickly buried in ocean sediment, atmospheric CO2 concentrations decrease. In order to predict the fluxes of carbon to the oceans, we need to understand the processes controlling organic carbon transport from source to sink. In a 1,300‐km‐long river in Argentina, we measured the amount of sediment and carbon in river water at multiple stations along the source‐to‐sink pathway. Using geochemical methods, we identified two types of organic carbon: (a) plant fragments, which are easily oxidized to CO2, and (b) organic carbon attached to minerals, which is resistant to oxidation. We calculated the mass fluxes of these two types of organic carbon and found that export of mineral‐protected carbon is greater than the export of plant fragments. This suggests that most riverine organic carbon may be preserved upon delivery to the ocean. Our data show that we need to differentiate between plant fragments and mineral‐attached organic carbon to predict the amount of organic carbon moving between rivers, the oceans, and the atmosphere. The biogeochemical functioning of soils (e.g., soil carbon stabilization and nutrient cycling) is determined at the interfaces of specific soil structures (e.g., aggregates, particulate organic matter (POM) and organo‐mineral associations). With the growing accessibility of spectromicroscopic techniques, there is an increase in nano‐ to microscale analyses of biogeochemical interfaces at the process scale, reaching from the distribution of elements and isotopes to the localization of microorganisms. A widely used approach to study intact soil structures is the fixation and embedding of intact soil samples in resin and the subsequent analyses of soil cross‐sections using spectromicroscopic techniques. However, it is still challenging to link such microscale approaches to larger scales at which normally bulk soil analyses are conducted. Here we report on the use of laboratory imaging Vis–NIR spectroscopy on resin embedded soil sections and a procedure for supervised image classification to determine the microscale soil structure arrangement, including the quantification of soil organic matter fractions. This approach will help to upscale from microscale spectromicroscopic techniques to the centimetre and possibly pedon scale. Thus, we demonstrate a new approach to integrate microscale soil analyses into pedon‐scale conceptual and experimental approaches. Here, we present our collective musings on soil research challenges and opportunities and, in particular, the points raised by Philippe Baveye (Baveye, 2020a, 2020b) and Johan Bouma (Bouma, 2020) on I bypass i and I hyperbole i in soil science. Furthermore, developing a healthy and constructive post-publication peer-review system, where bypasses and hyperbolic approaches can be identified and discussed, would ultimately boost publication quality and contribute to a more open discourse in soil science. Dark, that is, nonphototrophic, microbial CO2 fixation occurs in a large range of soils. However, it is still not known whether dark microbial CO2 fixation substantially contributes to the C balance of soils and what factors control this process. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantitate dark microbial CO2 fixation in temperate forest soils, to determine the relationship between the soil CO2 concentration and dark microbial CO2 fixation, and to estimate the relative contribution of different microbial groups to dark CO2 fixation. For this purpose, we conducted a 13C‐CO2 labeling experiment. We found that the rates of dark microbial CO2 fixation were positively correlated with the CO2 concentration in all soils. Dark microbial CO2 fixation amounted to up to 320 µg C kg−1 soil day−1 in the Ah horizon. The fixation rates were 2.8–8.9 times higher in the Ah horizon than in the Bw1 horizon. Although the rates of dark microbial fixation were small compared to the respiration rate (1.2%–3.9% of the respiration rate), our findings suggest that organic matter formed by microorganisms from CO2 contributes to the soil organic matter pool, especially given that microbial detritus is more stable in soil than plant detritus. Phospholipid fatty acid analyses indicated that CO2 was mostly fixed by gram‐positive bacteria, and not by fungi. In conclusion, our study shows that the dark microbial CO2 fixation rate in temperate forest soils increases in periods of high CO2 concentrations, that dark microbial CO2 fixation is mostly accomplished by gram‐positive bacteria, and that dark microbial CO2 fixation contributes to the formation of soil organic matter. The high aggregate stability of Andosols and the direct effects of sample drying led to several inconsistencies during physical soil organic matter fractionation. We have determined that NaCl addition displayed little influence on clay dispersion. At the microscale, we observed the re‐aggregation of the clay fraction caused by freeze‐drying. This issue was avoided by analyzing aliquots of soil suspension. Thus, we recommend reserving a small soil liquid aliquot to be subjected to microscopy analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased interest in the potential for forest ecosystems and soils to act as carbon (C) sinks. While soil organic C contents often vary with tree species identity, little is known about if, and how, tree species influence the stability of C in soil. Using a 40 year old common garden experiment with replicated plots of eleven temperate tree species, we investigated relationships between soil organic matter (SOM) stability in mineral soils and 17 ecological factors (including tree tissue chemistry, magnitude of organic matter inputs to the soil and their turnover, microbial community descriptors, and soil physicochemical properties). We measured five SOM stability indices, including heterotrophic respiration, C in aggregate occluded particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral associated SOM, and bulk SOM δ15N and ∆14C. The stability of SOM varied substantially among tree species, and this variability was independent of the amount of organic C in soils. Thus, when considering forest soils as C sinks, the stability of C stocks must be considered in addition to their size. Further, our results suggest tree species regulate soil C stability via the composition of their tissues, especially roots. Stability of SOM appeared to be greater (as indicated by higher δ15N and reduced respiration) beneath species with higher concentrations of nitrogen and lower amounts of acid insoluble compounds in their roots, while SOM stability appeared to be lower (as indicated by higher respiration and lower proportions of C in aggregate occluded POM) beneath species with higher tissue calcium contents. The proportion of C in mineral associated SOM and bulk soil ∆14C, though, were negligibly dependent on tree species traits, likely reflecting an insensitivity of some SOM pools to decadal scale shifts in ecological factors. Strategies aiming to increase soil C stocks may thus focus on particulate C pools, which can more easily be manipulated and are most sensitive to climate change. Sonication is widely used for disruption of suspended soil aggregates. Calorimetric calibration allows for determining sonication power and applied energy as a measure for aggregate disrupting forces. Yet other properties of sonication devices (e.g., oscillation frequency and amplitude, sonotrode diameter) as well as procedure details (soil‐to‐water ratio, size, shape, and volume of used containers) may influence the extent of aggregate disruption in addition to the applied energy. In this study, we tested potential bias in aggregate disruption when different devices or procedures are used in laboratory routines. In nine laboratories, three reference soil samples were sonicated at 30 J mL−1 and 400 J mL−1. Aggregate disruption was estimated based on particle size distribution before and after sonication. Size distribution was obtained by standardized submerged sieving for particle size classes 2000–200 and 200–63 µm, and by dynamic imaging for particles < 63 µm. Despite differences in sonication devices and protocols used by the participants, only 16 in 216 tests of samples of the size fractions 2000–200 and 200–63 µm were identified as outliers. For the size fraction < 63 µm, fewer outliers were detected (8 in 324 tests). Four out of nine laboratories produced more than two outliers. In these laboratories, sonication devices differed from the others regarding oscillation frequencies (24 or 30 kHz compared to 20 kHz), sonotrode diameters (10 and 14 mm compared to 13 mm), and sonication power (16 W compared to > 45 W). Thus, these sonication device properties need to be listed when reporting on sonication‐based soil aggregate disruption. The overall small differences in the degree of disruption of soil aggregates between different laboratories demonstrate that sonication with the energies tested (30 and 400 J mL−1) provides replicable results despite the variations regarding procedures and equipment. Pyrogenic carbon (PyC) derives from incomplete combustion of organic matter and is ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic systems. Most PyC is inherently more stable against decomposition than plant residues, and PyC therefore forms an important component of the global carbon (C) cycle. During the Holocene, about 436 Pg organic C accumulated in northern peatlands, and we hypothesize that PyC may contribute substantially to that C stock. We studied 70 samples from 19 intact and degraded European peatland sites and analyzed their PyC content by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and molecular modeling and peat age and accumulation by radiocarbon dating. Classification of a peatland as either intact or degraded was based on the comparison between apparent and expected long-term C accumulation rates. On average, PyC amounted for 13.5% of soil C across sites, and accounted for up to 50% at single sites. The amount of PyC increased significantly with peat age. Degraded peatlands had lost approximately 56 kg C m2, half of their former C stock. However, degraded peat had higher PyC contents than intact one. Selective enrichment of PyC during both peat build-up and decomposition seems to be an important factor fostering PyC accumulation. Assignment of our results to peatlands of the northern hemisphere, stratified by age, revealed an estimated PyC stock of 62 (±22) Pg. Our estimate indicates a substantial and hitherto unquantified contribution of northern peatlands to global PyC storage. © 2017 The Authors. Rationale: Aluminium (Al)‐substituted goethite is ubiquitous in soils and sediments. The extent of Al‐substitution affects the physicochemical properties of the mineral and influences its macroscale properties. Bulk analysis only provides total Al/Fe ratios without providing information with respect to the Al‐substitution of single minerals. Here, we demonstrate that nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) enables the precise determination of Al‐content in single minerals, while simultaneously visualising the variation of the Al/Fe ratio. Methods: Al‐substituted goethite samples were synthesized with increasing Al concentrations of 0.1, 3, and 7 % and analysed by NanoSIMS in combination with established bulk spectroscopic methods (XRD, FTIR, Mössbauer spectroscopy). The high spatial resolution (50–150 nm) of NanoSIMS is accompanied by a high number of single‐point measurements. We statistically evaluated the Al/Fe ratios derived from NanoSIMS, while maintaining the spatial information and reassigning it to its original localization. Results: XRD analyses confirmed increasing concentration of incorporated Al within the goethite structure. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed 11 % of the goethite samples generated at high Al concentrations consisted of hematite. The NanoSIMS data show that the Al/Fe ratios are in agreement with bulk data derived from total digestion and demonstrated small spatial variability between single‐point measurements. More advantageously, statistical analysis and reassignment of single‐point measurements allowed us to identify distinct spots with significantly higher or lower Al/Fe ratios. Conclusions: NanoSIMS measurements confirmed the capacity to produce images, which indicated the uniform increase in Al‐concentrations in goethite. Using a combination of statistical analysis with information from complementary spectroscopic techniques (XRD, FTIR and Mössbauer spectroscopy) we were further able to reveal spots with lower Al/Fe ratios as hematite. Abstract: Global change contributes to the retreat of glaciers at unprecedented rates. The deglaciation facilitates biogeochemical processes on glacial deposits with initiating soil formation as an important driver of evolving ecosystems. The underlying mechanisms of soil formation and the association of soil organic matter (SOM) with mineral particles remain unclear, although further insights are critical to understand carbon sequestration in soils. We investigated the microspatial arrangement of SOM coatings at intact soil microaggregate structures during various stages of ecosystem development from 15 to >700 years after deglaciation in the proglacial environment of the Damma glacier (Switzerland). The functionally important clay‐sized fraction (<2 μm) was separated into two density fractions with different amounts of organo‐mineral associations: light (1.6–2.2 g/cm3) and heavy (>2.2 g/cm3). To quantify how SOM extends across the surface of mineral particles (coverage) and whether SOM coatings are distributed in fragmented or connected patterns (connectivity), we developed an image analysis protocol based on nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS). We classified SOM and mineral areas depending on the 16O−, 12C−, and 12C14N− distributions. With increasing time after glacial retreat, the microspatial coverage and connectivity of SOM increased rapidly. The rapid soil formation led to a succession of patchy distributed to more connected SOM coatings on soil microaggregates. The maximum coverage of 55% at >700 years suggests direct evidence for SOM sequestration being decoupled from the mineral surface, as it was not completely masked by SOM and retained its functionality as an ion exchange site. The chemical composition of SOM coatings showed a rapid change toward a higher CN:C ratio already at 75 years after glacial retreat, which was associated with microbial succession patterns reflecting high N assimilation. Our results demonstrate that rapid SOM sequestration drives the microspatial succession of SOM coatings in soils, a process that can stabilize SOM for the long term. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Understanding the cycling of C and N in soils is important for maintaining soil fertility while also decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, but much remains unknown about how organic matter (OM) is stabilized in soils. We used nano‐scale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) to investigate the changes in C and N in a Vertisol and an Alfisol incubated for 365 days with 13C and 15N pulse labeled lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) to discriminate new inputs of OM from the existing soil OM. We found that almost all OM within the free stable microaggregates of the soil was associated with mineral particles, emphasizing the importance of organo‐mineral interactions for the stabilization of C. Of particular importance, it was also found that 15N‐rich microbial products originating from decomposition often sorbed directly to mineral surfaces not previously associated with OM. Thus, we have shown that N‐rich microbial products preferentially attach to distinct areas of mineral surfaces compared to C‐dominated moieties, demonstrating the ability of soils to store additional OM in newly formed organo‐mineral associations on previously OM‐free mineral surfaces. Furthermore, differences in 15N enrichment were observed between the Vertisol and Alfisol presumably due to differences in mineralogy (smectite‐dominated compared to kaolinite‐dominated), demonstrating the importance of mineralogy in regulating the sorption of microbial products. Overall, our findings have important implications for the fundamental understanding of OM cycling in soils, including the immobilization and storage of N‐rich compounds derived from microbial decomposition and subsequent N mineralization to sustain plant growth. The study of ecosystem processes over multiple scales of space and time is often best achieved using comparable data from multiple sites. Yet, long-term ecological observatories have often developed their own data collection protocols. Here, we address this problem by proposing a set of ecological protocols suitable for widespread adoption by the ecological community. Scientists from the European ecological research community prioritized terrestrial ecosystem parameters that could benefit from a more consistent approach to data collection within the resources available at most long-term ecological observatories. Parameters for which standard methods are in widespread use, or for which methods are evolving rapidly, were not selected. Protocols were developed by domain experts, building on existing methods where possible, and refined through a process of field testing and training. They address above-ground plant biomass; decomposition; land use and management; leaf area index; soil mesofaunal diversity; soil C and N stocks, and greenhouse gas emissions from soils. These complement existing methods to provide a complete assessment of ecological integrity. These protocols offer integrated approaches to ecological data collection that are low cost and are starting to be used across the European Long Term Ecological Research community. Permafrost-affected soils of the northern circumpolar region represent 50% of the terrestrial soil organic carbon ( SOC) reservoir and are most strongly affected by climatic change. There is growing concern that this vast SOC pool could transition from a net C sink to a source. But so far little is known on how the organic matter ( OM) in permafrost soils will respond in a warming future, which is governed by OM composition and possible stabilization mechanisms. To investigate if and how SOC in the active layer and adjacent permafrost is protected against degradation, we employed density fractionation to separate differently stabilized SOM fractions. We studied the quantity and quality of OM in different compartments using elemental analysis, 13 C solid-phase nuclear magnetic resonance (13 C- NMR) spectroscopy, and 14 C analyses. The soil samples were derived from 16 cores from drained thaw lake basins, ranging from 0 to 5500 years of age, representing a unique series of developing Arctic soils over time. The normalized SOC stocks ranged between 35.5 and 86.2 kg SOC m−3, with the major amount of SOC located in the active layers. The SOC stock is dominated by large amounts of particulate organic matter ( POM), whereas mineral-associated OM especially in older soils is of minor importance on a mass basis. We show that tremendous amounts of over 25 kg OC per square meter are stored as presumably easily degradable OM rich in carbohydrates. Only about 10 kg OC per square meter is present as presumably more stable, mineral-associated OC. Significant amounts of the easily degradable, carbohydrate-rich OM are preserved in the yet permanently frozen soil below the permafrost table. Ultrasonication is widely used in soil organic matter (SOM) fractionation studies to break up soil aggregates to disperse the soil into its primary particles. An increasing number of studies also aim to incubate SOM fractions obtained by physical soil fractionation to study the bioavailability of different soil organic C (SOC) pools. To evaluate possible influences of ultrasonic soil disruption on short-term SOM bioavailability as well as the content and composition of water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) and salt-extractable (10 mM K2S04) organic matter (SEOM), we conducted a laboratory incubation experiment with aggregated soil material from an Ap horizon of a cropland soil. Bulk soil and subsamples in which aggregates had been disrupted by ultrasonication were incubated in triplicate for 18 d at 20°C. During the incubation, C02 production was measured continuously. At the beginning and at the end of the experiment, the chemical composition of SEOM was analyzed for the different experimental variants by ultraviolet (UV)-absorbance and solid state 13C cross polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-CPMAS NMR) spectroscopy. Additionally, we studied the effects of WEOM removal on heterotrophic soil respiration to assess artifacts by unavoidable WEOM removal during soil wet sieving, which is an important step in soil fractionation. After repeated leaching of unsonicated and sonicated soil samples, 0.5 to 1.0% of the total organic C (OC) pool was associated with the WEOM fraction. Ultrasonic disruption of soil aggregates resulted in increased amounts and changed composition of SEOM as well as in a 27% increase in C02 production compared with intact soils. Incubation of ultrasonicated samples resulted in decreased O/N alkyl C and increased aromatic C contents in SEOM, indicating mineralization of potentially mobile organic matter (OM). Ultrasonic treatment during soil fractionation leads to enhanced dissolved OM (DOM) leaching and increased SOM bioavailability, which may bias results from incubation experiments on separated SOM fractions. Land-use change affects not only the amount of soil organic matter (SOM) but also its composition. We performed cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) 13C and 15N nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to investigate the chemical composition of bulk SOM in topsoils (0–15 cm) under different land use, namely native forest (NF), 27-year cropland with wheat/soybean rotation (CL) and 27-year rangelands with guineagrass (RG) and with bahiagrass (RB), in south-east Bolivia. The findings of this study showed only a subtle alteration of composition of bulk SOM despite the large changes in carbon (C) content. Nevertheless, NF and RB showed a slightly lower abundance of aromatic C but a higher proportion of alkyl C compared to CL and RG where the loss of organic matter was substantial. This suggests that relatively stable components dominated by aromatic structures had relatively enriched during SOM decomposition under agricultural practices. A slight disparity of SOM composition observed between RG and RB (less O-alkyl C but more aromatic C in RG than RB) suggests that grass species influenced SOM quality even under the same land use, namely the rangeland.
