Differences in the pore and fracture systems of four marcolithotypes (bright，semi‐bright, semi‐dull and dull) in coal reservoirs affect the quality of coalbed methane (CBM) and constrain exploration and development of CBM. In this paper, vitrinite reflectance (RO), maceral composition, proximate analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), low‐field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high‐pressure isothermal adsorption experiments and the mathematical method of fractal dimension were carried out on high‐rank coal samples of different marcolithotypes from the Weizhou mining area in the western margin of Ordos Basin. The results show that from bright coal to dull coal, the RO and vitrinite content gradually decrease, while the mineral content and Aad gradually increase. SEM images show that the bright and semi‐bright coals develop open fractures, whereas semi‐dull and dull coals develop closed fractures. According to pore size distribution established by MIP and NMR, the proportion of seepage pores gradually increased from bright coal to dull coal, and MIP fractal dimension of seepage pores (DM2; 2.3352, 2.3532, 2.3755 and 2.4727, respectively) and NMR fractal dimension of seepage pores (DN2; 2.8767, 2.9142, 2.9297 and 2.9981, respectively) show that the structure of the seepage pore is progressively more complex from bright coal to dull coal. In addition, percentage of NMR adsorption pores progressively increases from bright coal to dull coal (64.96%, 76.64%, 82.04% and 89.67%, respectively), but total porosity of bright coal (6.74%) is much greater than that of dull coal (1.34%), which results in that bright coal also has the strongest CH4 adsorption capability (Langmuir volume is 22.898 cm3/g). Cambrian shales in China and elsewhere contain abundant oil and gas resources. However, due to its deep burial and limited outcrop, there has been relatively little research conducted on it. The Cambrian shale of the Tadong low uplift in the Tarim Basin of western China, specifically the Xidashan–Xishanbulake Formation (Fm.) and overlying Moheershan Fm. provide a case study through the use of organic petrology, mineralogy, organic and elemental geochemistry, with the aim of analyzing and exploring the hydrocarbon generation potential (PG) and organic matter (OM) enrichment mechanisms within these shale formations. The results indicate that: (1) the Cambrian shale of the Tadong low uplift exhibits relatively dispersed OM that consists of vitrinite‐like macerals and solid bitumen. These formations have a higher content of quartz and are primarily composed of silica‐based lithology; (2) shale samples from the Xidashan–Xishanbulake and Moheershan formations demonstrate high total organic carbon (TOC) and low S2 content. The OM is predominantly type I and type II kerogens, indicating a high level of maturation in the wet gas period. These shales have undergone extensive hydrocarbon generation, showing characteristics of relatively poor PG; (3) the sedimentary environments of the Xidashan–Xishanbulake and Moheershan formations in the Tadong low uplift are similar. They were deposited in warm and humid climatic conditions, in oxygen‐deficient environments, with stable terrigenous inputs, high paleoproductivity, high paleosalinity, weak water‐holding capacity, and no significant hydrothermal activity; and (4) the relationship between TOC and the paleoproductivity parameter (P/Ti) is most significant in the Lower Cambrian Xidashan–Xishanbulake Fm., whereas correlation with other indicators is not evident. This suggests a productivity‐driven OM enrichment model, where input of land‐derived material was relatively small during the Middle Cambrian, and the ancient water exhibited lower salinity. A comprehensive pattern was formed under the combined control of paleoproductivity and preservation conditions. This study provides valuable guidance for oil and gas exploration in the Tarim Basin. Geochemical analysis was performed on the Cretaceous sequence of the Azhar‐A‐2 well in the West Beni Suef Basin (WBSB), Western Desert, Egypt, utilizing data on total organic carbon (TOC), kerogen composition, vitrinite reflectance (Ro%) and Rock‐Eval pyrolysis. In addition, a 1D basin model was built to investigate the burial and temperature history of the study area. The most important Cretaceous source rocks are predominantly reported within the Albian Kharita Formation and Late Cenomanian‐Santonian Abu Roash (AR) Formation. Based on visual kerogen tests and Rock‐Eval pyrolysis, AR Formation (A, E, F, and G) are mixed oil‐ and gas‐prone source rocks with kerogens ranging from type II to type III, where A/R 'A and F' Members show dominant oil‐prone kerogen with the highest generative potential, while A/R 'E and G' Members are more gas‐prone kerogen. Most samples of the lower Kh Formation were interpreted as gas‐prone kerogen type III with low generative potential. On the other hand, the high amount of liptinite in the visual kerogen macerals is a strong indicator that the lower Petroleum Formation is an oil‐prone rather than gas‐prone source rock. The thermal maturity of the studied members increases consistently with depth, ranging from immature at the top of the AR Formation to the main/peak oil window at the base of the Lower Kharita Formation, which served as an active source rock for the hydrocarbons generated in the WBSB. The high value of the heat flow in the Beni Suef Basin (57 and 60 mW/m2) is a good indicator for the shallowing of the active source rock depth limit depth. From the study of the basin modeling, the main mature zone reached between 9811 and 11,090 ft in the middle of the Late Cretaceous (84.3–82.5 Ma) is through the L. Kharita Formation with three phases of hydrocarbon generation according to transformation ratio, where the second phase is the main stage in which TR is 5%–50%, showing the beginning of oil expulsion (Ro: 0.73%–0.78%, possibly 0.81%). The estimation of the degree of carbonification of coals can be investigated using the Raman microspectroscopy applied for the analysis of grains of selected macerals (altered remains of organic particles). This approach allows for the best control of the analyses such as precise selection and orientation of the maceral grains to be analysed. On the other hand, the miniaturized, especially handheld Raman spectrometers typically offer a significantly less controlled environment with the issues including large laser spot sizes and the focusing issues. However, the advantages of the miniaturized spectrometers include fast analyses and the possibility of in situ analyses. This study illustrates that it is possible to discriminate among the coals of different degrees of maturation of the carbonaceous matter and other types of carbonaceous matter using the data acquired with a portable Raman spectrometer using spectroscopic parameters: D and G band widths and wavenumber positions. The issues inherent to the analyses of such heterogeneous materials such as coals using a portable spectrometer were addressed. Moreover, the variability in the Raman spectroscopic backgrounds of a wide range of coals from lignite to anthracite necessitated the utilization of a robust background removal function. This study shows that modern portable Raman spectrometers with the appropriate excitation are capable of basic discrimination among the different types of carbonaceous matter, with implications towards fast in situ analyses of carbonaceous matter in rocks as an additional tool for a geologist. Organic‐rich shale samples of the Late Cretaceous Mukalla Formation from the Al‐Fatk1 well in the offshore Jiza‐Qamar Basin, eastern Yemen, were examined using bulk organic geochemistry, microscopic examination, and biomarker measurements combined with 1‐D basin modelling, to evaluate the organic matter characteristics and their ability to generate gas. The studied Mukalla shale samples are characterized by their high organic matter content with total values of up to 14.50 wt.%, and contain mainly hydrogen‐poor Type III kerogen, indicating elevated gas generation potential. The hydrogen‐poor kerogen was also demonstrated by biomarker measurements combined with an abundance of land‐derived organic matter (i.e., vitrinite and inertinite) as established by microscopic investigation. The biomarkers of the studied organic‐rich shales were characterized by a high Pr/Ph ratio, abundance of C29 regular steranes, high C27 17α (H)‐22, 29, 30‐trisnorhopane compared with C27 18α (H)‐22, 29, 30‐trisnorneohopane, all providing evidence for the organic matter being derived primarily from higher land plant organic matter, deposited in fluvial deltaic environments under highly oxic conditions. The bulk carbon isotope data agree with the findings of terrigenous organic matter. The maturity indicators show that the examined organic‐rich shale samples have entered the main oil stage and are at the beginning of wet gas generation windows, exhibiting vitrinite reflectance values that range between 0.73% and 1.20%. Kerogen to gas conversion has been simulated by the basin models and shows that between 10% and 15% of kerogen has transformed into gas during the late Miocene until the present‐day, consistent with the wet gas generation window (1.00–1.20 %Ro). Substantial gas exploration potential may exist in the fluvial deltaic Mukalla source rock system in the deeper structural units of the Qamar‐Jiza Basin, where the Mukalla Formation has reached the high maturity level of the gas generation window. The coal‐bearing strata in the southern Junggar Basin in northwestern China have recently attracted the attention of coal geologists. Its abundance of coal resources is of great interest as there is a potential of unlocking details about the palaeoclimatic information. Coal deposits have the capacity to record wildfire events, even those with inefficient combustions. To characterize wildfire events and palaeoclimatic history of the Middle Jurassic Xishanyao Formation (Aalenian and Bajocian ages), 22 coal samples from borehole cores and coal mines in the southern Junggar Basin were collected and their macerals were analyzed. The results indicated that fusinite and semi‐fusinite were the dominant components of inertinite with proportions of 35.27% and 54.67%, respectively. The presence of inertinite is an indicator that wildfires occurred at the time of peat land development, and the widespread occurrence suggests large scale wildfires during the Middle Jurassic. This study proposes a new parameter for the evaluation of wildfire features by combining burning frequency and burning temperature. The comprehensive evaluation index (CEI) was influenced by the lacustrine basin level and ancient plant types from a sequence framework. During the Middle Jurassic, most wildfires were surface fires with low level and ground fire with high level. High oxygen levels were estimated in the lower, middle, and upper members of the Xishanyao Formation with corresponding to 26.78%, 24.55%, and 23.55%, respectively. The high oxygen levels would be the primary cause of repeated wildfires in the Middle Jurassic. These results are helpful for understanding palaeoclimatic changes in the Middle Jurassic. The Oligocene Laisong Formation in the Naga Schuppen Belt is coal bearing along the Dimapur‐Kohima Road section, Nagaland. The coals are sulphurous and classified as lignite to sub‐bituminous 'C' based on various rank parameters. The coals are dominantly composed of vitrinite followed by inertinite and liptinite in order of abundance. The coals have high‐quality Type III kerogens derived mainly from angiosperm plants. The richness and quality of organic matter in the coal is excellent to act as a petroleum source rock. Most of the maturity parameters indicate that maturity ranges from immature to early mature. The biomarker parameters and facies critical maceral associations point to deposition of the coal‐bearing strata in non‐marine/terrestrial depositional environment under moist hydrodynamic conditions, possibly in an upper delta plain environment. However, the high sulphur content of the coal points to deposition in a lower delta plain environment. Comparison with other Palaeogene coal deposits of the same sedimentary basin shows that the Laisong coals contain lesser amount of liptinite macerals and much higher amount of sulphur than these deposits. All these deposits are of similar rank, however, the Laisong coals show marginally low thermal maturity from the viewpoint of hydrocarbon generation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coal‐bearing source rocks of the Pinghu Formation in the Xihu Depression comprise an important material basis of oil and gas resources in the East China Sea Basin. Based on drilling core observation results combined with the analysis and test results of macerals, trace/rare earth elements, and rock pyrolysis, the geochemical characteristics and sedimentary control of coal‐bearing source rocks formation are discussed in a high‐frequency sequence framework. The results indicate that the macerals composition of the coal‐bearing source rocks of the Eocene Pinghu Formation in the Xihu Depression is dominated by vitrinite, with low‐medium abundance of exinite and almost no inertinite. The coals and carbonaceous mudstones display higher amounts of total organic carbon (TOC) (14.90%–65.10%), S1 + S2 (39.24–136.52 mg/g), and IH (191–310 HC/g TOC) respectively, as compared to the mudstones. Organic matter is plotted in type III kerogens and partially in type II; it is mainly in the low maturity stage. The trace elements results imply that the samples were deposited in a weakly reducing to weakly oxidizing environment and were occasionally affected by seawater. The coal‐bearing source rocks were deposited in a relatively oxygen‐containing environment. The coal‐bearing source rocks development is jointly controlled by the coal accumulation environment, the water conditions affected by ocean currents in offshore basins in China, oxidation–reduction cycles of aqueous media and paleoclimate evolution in a high‐frequency sequence framework. Coal measure source rocks, located in the Xihu Sag of the East China Sea Shelf Basin, were analyzed to define the hydrocarbon generation potential, organic geochemistry/petrology characteristics, and coal preservation conditions. The Pinghu source rocks in the Xihu Sag are mainly gas‐prone accompany with condensate oil generation. The coals and shales of the Pinghu Formation are classified from "fair" to "excellent" source rocks with total organic carbon (TOC) contents ranging from 25.2% to 77.2% and 1.29% to 20.9%, respectively. The coals are richer in TOC and S1+S2 than the shales, indicating that the coals have more generation potential per unit mass. Moreover, the kerogen type of the organic matter consists of types II‐III and III, which the maturity Ro ranges from 0.59% to 0.83%. Petrographically, the coals and shales are dominated by vitrinite macerals (69.1%–96.8%) with minor proportions of liptinite (2.5%–17.55%) and inertinite (0.2%–6.2%). The correlation between maceral composition and S1+S2 indicates that the main contributor to the generation potential is vitrinite. Therefore, the coals and shales of the Pinghu Formation has good hydrocarbon generation potential, which provided a good foundation for coal measure gas accumulation. Furthermore, coal facies models indicates that the Pinghu coal was deposited in limno‐telmatic environment under high water levels, with low tree density (mainly herbaceous) and with low‐moderate nutrient supply. Fluctuating water levels and intermittent flooding during the deposition of peat resulted in the inter‐layering of coal, shale and sandstone, which potentially providing favorable preservation conditions for coal measure gas. Coal seams preserve high‐resolution records of ancient terrestrial water table (base level) fluctuations in ancient peat accumulations, but little is known about base level change in anomalously thick coal seams. Using the Early Cretaceous 91 m anomalously thick No. 6 coal (lignite) seam in the Erlian Basin (north‐east China) as a case study, the origin and evolution of peat accumulation in a continental faulted basin is revealed by sedimentological, sequence stratigraphic and coal petrological analyses. The lignite is dominated by huminite, indicating oxygen‐deficient and waterlogged conditions in the precursor mire. Four types of key sequence stratigraphic surfaces are recognized, including paludification, terrestrialization, accommodation‐reversal and give‐up transgressive surfaces. Vertically, the No. 6 coal seam consists of fourteen superimposed wetting‐up and drying‐up cycles separated by key sequence stratigraphic surfaces, with each of these cycles having a mean duration of about 156 to 173 kyr. In a high accommodation peat swamp system, the wetting‐up cycles are generally characterized by an upward increase in mineral matter and inertodetrinite and an upward decrease in huminite with the paludification surface as their base and the give‐up transgressive surface or accommodation‐reversal surface as their top, representing a trend of upward‐increasing accommodation. In contrast, the drying‐up cycles are generally characterized by an upward decrease in mineral matter and inertodetrinite and an upward increase in huminite, with the terrestrialization surface as their base and the accommodation‐reversal surface as their top, representing a trend of upward‐decreasing accommodation. A multi‐phase mire stacking model for accumulation of the coal seam is proposed based on high‐frequency accommodation cycles and the stratigraphic relationships between coal and clastic sediments. High‐frequency accommodation cycles in the coal are closely related to water table fluctuations in the precursor mires and are driven by high‐frequency climate via changes in the intensity and seasonality of precipitation in a relatively stable subsidence regime. Recognition that the No. 6 coal seam is composed of multiple stacked mires has implications for studies addressing palaeoclimatic inferences and genesis of anomalously thick coals seams. For coal conversion using pyrolysis or hydrogenation the prediction of the very complex processing behavior of coal is of prime importance. A first approach can be given by a systematic examination of the micropetrography of solid residues. Thereby, a threefold classification could be drawn, distinguishing between components of the original macerals, the coked material and the inorganic residues. In addition to this generally nomenclature, the components can also serve as indicators for the process course and efficiency, and can provide possible indications for process optimization. Samples of Turonian - upper Campanian fine-grained carbonates (marls, mud- to wackestones; n = 212) from four boreholes near Chekka, northern Lebanon, were analysed to assess their organic matter quantity and quality, and to interpret their depositional environment. Total organic carbon (TOC), total inorganic carbon and total sulphur contents were measured in all samples. A selection of samples were then analysed in more detail using Rock-Eval pyrolysis, maceral analyses, gas chromatography - flame ionization detection (GC-FID), and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) on aliphatic hydrocarbon extracts. TOC measurements and Rock-Eval pyrolysis indicated the very good source rock potential of a ca. 150 m thick interval within the upper Santonian - upper Campanian succession intercepted by the investigated boreholes, in which samples had average TOC values of 2 wt % and Hydrogen Index values of 510 mgHC/gTOC. The dominance of alginite macerals relative to terrestrial macerals, the composition of C27-C29 regular steranes, the elevated C31 22R homohopane / C30 hopane ratio (> 0.25), the low terrigenous / aquatic ratio of n-alkanes, as well as δ13Corg values between −29‰ and −27‰ together suggest a marine depositional environment and a mainly algal / phytoplanktonic source of organic matter. Redox sensitive geochemical parameters indicate mainly dysoxic depositional conditions. The samples have high Hydrogen Index values (413-610 mg/g TOC) which indicate oil-prone Type II kerogen. Tmax values (414 - 432°C) are consistent with other maturity parameters such as vitrinite reflectance (0.25-0.4% VRr) as well as sterane and hopane isomerisation ratios, and indicate that the organic matter is thermally immature and has not reached the oil window. This study contributes to the relatively scarce geochemical information for the eastern margin of the Levant Basin, but extrapolation of the data to offshore areas remains uncertain. Inertinite maceral compositions of the Late Permian coals from three sections in the terrestrial and paralic settings of eastern Yunnan are analyzed in order to reveal the paleo-fire events and the atmospheric oxygen levels in the latest Permian. Although the macerals in the studied sections are generally dominated by vitrinite, the inertinite group makes up a considerable proportion. Its content increases upward from the beginning of the Late Permian to the coal seam near the Permian-Triassic boundary. Based on the microscopic features and the prevailing theory that inertinite is largely a by-product of paleo-fires, we suggest that the increasing upward trend of the inertinite abundance in the latest Permian could imply that the Late Permian peatland had suffered from frequent wildfires. Since ignition and burning depend on sufficient oxygen, a model-based calculation suggests that the O2 levels near the Wuchiapingian/Changhsingian boundary and the Permian-Triassic boundary are 27% and 28% respectively. This output adds supports to other discoveries made in the temporal marine and terrestrial sediments, and challenges the theories advocating hypoxia as a mechanism for the Permian-Triassic boundary crisis. In order to study the accumulation mechanism of 'barkinite', eight Late Permian channel benches (approximately 15-cm across and 10-cm deep) were taken from the Jinshan Mine, Anhui Province, China. The samples were analyzed by microscopical and geochemical methods. The microscopical observations indicate that the occurrence modes of 'barkinite' in this area are different from those in other areas of China. The ratios of structureless 'barkinite' are much higher in the Jinshan Mine, probably due to the flow-water and marine influenced environments. Furthermore, vitrinite macerals also show a strong fluorescence. The vitrinite fluorescence characteristics have not been observed in the Permian 'barkinite' coals from northern China. The composition and variation of minerals in the column section also showed that the swamps in the study area were seriously influenced by seawater in the early and late stage during the peat accumulation.
