This is a study assessing the effectiveness of staples versus sutures for closing incisions after total hip arthroplasty (THA). We searched all relevant literature up to July 2023, and after reading through the full text, we finally included 5 for analysis, with a total of 1084 cases who underwent total hip arthroplasty, of which 548 were closed with staples and 536 with sutures, and evaluated the risk of bias with the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool, using the ratio of ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to compare the effectiveness of staples and sutures in wound closure in total hip arthroplasty. The study found that the suture group was superior to the staple group in terms of superficial infection and incisional exudate; superficial infection (OR = 3.04, 95% CI: 1.14–8.07; p = 0.03, I2 = 0%), incisional exudate (OR = 3.22, 95% CI: 1.84–5.65; p < 0.001, I2 = 0%) and suture staples were superior to suture group in terms of closure time (WMD = −231.8 95% CI: −429.55 to −34.05; p = 0.02, I2 = 100%). There was no remarkable distinction between the two groups in terms of deep infection, postoperative hospital, HWES score and patient's satisfaction, deep infection (OR = 1.24, 95% CI: 0.35–4.35; p = 0.74, I2 = 0%), postoperative hospital (WMD = 2.50 95% CI: −2.25 to 7.25; p = 0.30, I2 = 100%), HWES score (WMD = −0.38 95% CI: −0.52 to −0.24; p < 0.01, I2 = 72%) and patient's satisfaction (WMD = −0.23 95% CI: −1.43 to 0.96; p = 0.70, I2 = 94%); however, due to the small sample sizes of several studies included in this study, caution must be exercised when addressing their value. To date, we have reviewed the synthesis literature critically through four databases: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science. Eight relevant studies were examined after compliance with the criteria for inclusion and exclusion, as well as documentation quality evaluation. This report covered all randomised, controlled studies of total hip arthroplasty (THA) comparing the direct anterior approach (DAA) with the postero‐lateral approach (PLA). The main result was surgical site infection rate. The secondary results were duration of the operation, length of the incision and VAS score after surgery. The results of the meta‐analyses of wound infections in the present trial did not show any statistically significant difference in DAA versus PLA (between DAA and PLA) (OR = 1.42, 95%CI: 0.5 to 4.04, p = 0.51). Compared with PLA, DAA had shorter surgical incision (WMD = −3.2, 95%CI: −4.00 to −2.41; p < 0.001) and longer operative times(WMD = 14. 67, 95%CI: 9.24 to 20.09; p < 0.001). Postoperative VAS scores were markedly lower in DAA compared with PLA within 6 weeks of surgery (p < 0.05), with low heterogeneities(I2 = 0). We found that DAA did not differ significantly from PLA in terms of the risk of wound infection for THA and that the surgical incisions was shorter and less postoperative pain after surgery, even though DAA surgery takes longer. The seasonal rainfall regime is a key factor control on local ecological and social processes and is commonly thought to be stable under long‐term climate changes. Here we present a unique high‐resolution rainfall record from the Thai‐Malay Peninsula, combined with a state‐of‐the‐art transient climate simulation, demonstrating a fundamental rainfall regime shift from summer to winter during the Holocene. Transient model simulation and new sensitivity experiments further reveal that westward migration of the boundary between summer and winter rainfall regimes results in a summer to winter rainfall regime shift forced by distinct changes in summer and winter monsoons. Our findings suggest that the seasonal rainfall regime could be unstable under climate change around the boundaries of rainfall regimes in the tropics and possibly worldwide, which might be more critical for shaping both past and future ecological environments. The carbon isotope (δ13C) in marine biogenic carbonate is a valuable tool for comprehending the marine carbon cycle. However, the absence of monthly resolved δ13C records before the instrumental era (since 1850) hinders us to fully understand the global carbon cycle. In this study, we present a δ13C record from a modern Tridacna gigas shell (δ13Cshell) collected from the southern South China Sea (SCS) with an average resolution of ∼10 days. The δ13C record illustrates seasonal and interannual cycles which are superimposed by long‐term decreasing trend. We investigate the environmental controls influencing the δ13Cshell on different time scales. We suggest that more positive δ13Cshell values observed during the juvenile stage (first 8–10 years), which correspond to a high growth rate, can be attributed to 13C enrichment of the internal dissolved inorganic carbon pool. This resulted from the exponential increase of symbiotic zooxanthellae, and preferential 12C sequestration by the accelerated buildup of productive tissues. On the interannual time scale, changes in δ13Cshell were likely affected by both internal (vital effect) and external processes (sea water δ13C), as well as being disturbed by the super El Niño‐La Niña event. Seasonal changes of δ13Cshell were mainly dominated by the intensity of photosynthesis and respiration of symbiotic zooxanthellae, which depend on the seasonal solar irradiance variations in association with precipitation and the South Asian summer monsoon. Our study sheds light on the controlling factors of δ13Cshell variations on seasonal timescale and the long‐term trend, providing insight into the carbon cycle over geological history. Plain Language Summary: Tridacna is a marine bivalve that forms symbiotic zooxanthellae in its mantle tissues and has a hard calcium shell. In this study, we analyzed the carbon isotope composition of the Tridacna shell collected from the southern South China Sea and compared it with various climatic and oceanographic records. Our results suggest that the variability of carbon isotope in the Tridacna shell is predominantly controlled by the activity of its symbiotic zooxanthellae in association with solar radiation and growth rate on various time scales. Furthermore, we found that changes in the carbon isotope of Tridacna shell can be influenced by fluctuations in the South Asian summer monsoon and strong El Niño‐La Niña events. Our study sheds light on the factors that control carbon isotope in the Tridacna shell on different time scales, thereby providing valuable insights into the carbon cycle and climate history. Comprehensive Summary: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the major pathogen that causes invasive infectious diseases in neonates and infants. The development of preventive and therapeutic strategies against GBS infection has been becoming the most pressing subject worldwide. Group B carbohydrate (GBC), the group B‐specific polysaccharide that distinguishes GBS with other streptococci species, has been identified as an attractive antigen for diagnosis and vaccine development because of its highly conservative tetra‐antennary structure. In this paper, a highly convergent [3 + 5] glycosylation strategy for efficient synthesis of an octasaccharide derivative related to GBC oligosaccharide unit II has been developed. In this synthesis, each glycosylation reaction was efficiently constructed with glycosyl imidates, especially trifluoroacetimidate, as donors, and each glycosidic bond was stereoselectively controlled via the neighboring group participation effect of acyl group on the 2‐O‐position of imidate donors or the solvent effect of Et2O. Furthermore, the aminoethylphosphate group was smoothly installed on the 6‐O‐position of d‐glucitol residue using the phosphoramidite method. After global deprotection, the target octasaccharide was successfully obtained from d‐glucitol in 29 steps with an overall yield of 1.37%. The free amino group installed on the aminoethylphosphate spacer of the target molecule enables its modification with functionalized biomolecules for further biological studies. The effect of cyanobacterial blooms on aquatic ecosystems has received wide attention, yet little is known about their impacts on zooplankton genetic structure.For 26 months (April 2012–May 2014), we monitored zooplankton in a warm‐temperate ice‐free lake in Eastern China, with an emphasis on seasonal population dynamics of the cladoceran, Daphnia galeata. There was a seasonal succession in the zooplanktonic community (composed of Cladocera, Copepoda, and Rotifera).Genetic analysis (based on 14 microsatellite loci) of the 21 monthly samples in which D. galeata was present demonstrated that several clones could successfully overwinter and/or persist for many months. However, all clones, including these long‐lived clones, were completely replaced by new ones after October 2013, probably due to cyanobacteria blooms in that summer. A high clonal richness coupled with high turnover rate was observed in the D. galeata population overall, suggesting frequent sexual reproduction.Daphnia galeata experimentally fed with a diet of Microcystis aeruginosa (the most abundant toxic cyanobacterial species in the lake) had a substantially reduced survivorship, consistent with the field observations.Our findings highlight the changes of zooplanktonic population dynamics in terms of both community and clonal structure in a warm‐temperate ice‐free lake, and call for further investigation on ecological responses of zooplankton to cyanobacterial blooms. The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of Earth's surface, with a maximum depth of close to 11,000 m in the Challenger Deep. Great progress has been made in studying the trench in the past years; however, several basic issues regarding the sedimentology and geochronology of the abyssal surficial sediments in the trench remain unclear. In this study, two gravity cores of Plio‐Pleistocene sediments were retrieved from the southern slope of the Mariana Trench. They were used for an integrated investigation of magnetostratigraphy, authigenic 10Be/9Be dating, and element manganese content. The principal results are as follows. (1) Ten magnetozones are recognized for Core A25, which can be correlated to the geomagnetic polarity time scale from Chrons C1n to C3r. (2) The paleomagnetic and 10Be/9Be‐based ages agree well for both of the two cores, yielding a continuous depositional hiatus since the middle Pleistocene (0.63–0.74 Ma). (3) The sediment accumulation rates prior to ~1.3 Ma are 35–83 cm/Myr and then increased substantially to 167–200 cm/Myr. Based on these results, a sedimentary transition at ~1.3–1.2 Ma is confirmed, which can be potentially correlated to climatic, oceanic, and tectonic changes in the Mid‐Pleistocene transition. In addition, an elemental Mn proxy is derived to reflect changes in bottom‐water ventilation, which is consistent with Lower Circumpolar Deep Water and North Atlantic Deep Water on glacial‐interglacial time scales. We conclude that the sedimentary record of the Mariana Trench provides a unique window for investigating the integrated effects of long‐term climatic, oceanic, and tectonic processes. Maize grain filling (GF) and grain weight (GW) are closely associated with grain yield. In our study, the ZmARM4 locus affecting GF and GW was identified using a reverse genetics screen of UniformMutator (Mu). First, MutatorDR‐flanking sequence (MuDRFs) was isolated from the mutant by the MuDR‐amplified fragment length polymorphism method, and it was verified by cosegregation (between MuDRFs and phenotype) and linkage analyses. Second, the target gene of the MuDRFs was found to encode the Armadillo domain of the repeat protein gene families and has high expression in the GF stage. Third, association mapping between SNPs in the ZmARM4 region and the GW of 489 maize lines indicated that ZmARM4 is a functional gene that is closely related to GW. Moreover, bioinformatics analysis suggested that ZmARM4 may be relevant for the activity of sucrose transport or the number of cell divisions in endosperm cells. Very few studies have focused on the biogeography and genetic diversity of aquatic invertebrate zooplankton from the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau, an important biogeographic hotspot. The geological uplift of this region created special environments requiring adaptive genetic diversification of the resident lineages. Here, we developed and used the first set of high‐resolution microsatellite markers for the Daphnia similis species complex. We screened this species in 23 (out of 303) lakes across China, covering a large geographical and ecological range of habitats. High population clonal diversity of the D. similis species complex was found, regardless of their geographical origin. However, four Tibetan Daphnia sinensis populations showed substantially lower clonal diversity. Interestingly, D. sinensis populations from two regions, Eastern China and the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau of Western China, were found to be clearly differentiated from each other. Lakes inhabited by Western D. sinensis were of a lower trophic level, higher altitude, and more likely to freeze in the winter. This study contributes to an understanding of adaptation to their special environments by the freshwater invertebrates in the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The idea that hybridization promotes range expansion has received recent attention, but support from field studies is limited. We hypothesized that in the cladoceran waterflea genus Daphnia, parental species are geographically and ecologically separated, whereas hybrids occupy intermediate or occasionally extreme environments, potentially facilitating range expansion of parental species. We assessed the distribution of Daphnia dentifera, Daphnia galeata and their interspecific hybrids across 44 lakes in China (using mitochondrial and microsatellite markers), and related it to geographical and environmental lake descriptors. Parental species were geographically separated: D. dentifera occurred in western and central China, and D. galeata in eastern and central China, whereas hybrids were found in the western and central parts of the country. However, after controlling for geographical differences, the effect of environment on species distribution was strong and significant. Specifically, D. dentifera was present in high‐altitude oligotrophic lakes, D. galeata in low‐altitude eutrophic lakes and hybrids at intermediate to high altitudes, mainly in mesotrophic lakes. Microsatellite data indicated that hybrids were locally produced rather than having migrated from elsewhere; they probably resulted from encounters between expanding D. galeata and resident D. dentifera. The present study provides evidence that hybrids can survive in habitats that are otherwise suitable for only one of their parental species, emphasizing the importance of hybridization in expansion of species gene pools. Summary: Studies have shown that the predictive value of “clinical diagnoses” of influenza and other respiratory viral infections is low, especially in children. In routine care, pediatricians often resort to clinical diagnoses, even in the absence of robust evidence‐based criteria. We used a dual approach to identify clinical characteristics that may help to differentiate infections with common pathogens including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, metapneumovirus, rhinovirus, bocavirus‐1, coronaviruses, or parainfluenza virus: (a) systematic review and meta‐analysis of 47 clinical studies published in Medline (June 1996 to March 2017, PROSPERO registration number: CRD42017059557) comprising 49 858 individuals and (b) data‐driven analysis of an inception cohort of 6073 children with ILI (aged 0‐18 years, 56% male, December 2009 to March 2015) examined at the point of care in addition to blinded PCR testing. We determined pooled odds ratios for the literature analysis and compared these to odds ratios based on the clinical cohort dataset. This combined analysis suggested significant associations between influenza and fever or headache, as well as between respiratory syncytial virus infection and cough, dyspnea, and wheezing. Similarly, literature and cohort data agreed on significant associations between HMPV infection and cough, as well as adenovirus infection and fever. Importantly, none of the abovementioned features were unique to any particular pathogen but were also observed in association with other respiratory viruses. In summary, our “real‐world” dataset confirmed published literature trends, but no individual feature allows any particular type of viral infection to be ruled in or ruled out. For the time being, laboratory confirmation remains essential. ABSTRACT To reconstruct the history of climate and environment in East Asia during the Early Pleistocene, a palynofloral investigation was conducted on fluviolacustrine sediments in Beijing, North China. The results indicate that herb and shrub taxa were dominant in most of the samples, reflecting an open forest grassland covering the Beijing region during much of the Early Pleistocene. This vegetation generally declined during 1.68-1.25 Ma and recovered in part during 1.25-0.96 Ma. From 0.96 Ma, conifers gradually replaced broad-leaved trees, shrubs and herbs. After 0.65 Ma, the pollen abundance of conifers, shrubs and herbs all increased significantly. These vegetation changes took place in the context of long-term global cooling during the Late Cenozoic. A significant increase in Antarctic ice volume at 1.25-1.20 Ma and the resultant increased meridional temperature gradient in the Southern Ocean led to prominent anomalous warming in the tropics and increased heat/moisture flow across the Equator, probably resulting in vegetation recovery in the study area to some extent during 1.25-0.96 Ma. From 0.96 Ma, the stepwise decline of vegetation cover in the study area, especially after 0.65 Ma, was driven by further development of global cooling and increase in polar ice volume. ABSTRACT In this paper, we report results of the pilot study in which we apply skeletochronological analysis of teeth to a collection of modern Chinese wild boar ( Sus scrofa) of known age and date of death. This is the first time that odontochronology has been applied to suids in China. This work allowed us to establish parameters for subsequent analysis of a limited number of Neolithic-aged Sus (wild boar and possible early domesticated pig) samples from Henan Province. The goal of the research is to contribute to the ongoing reconstruction of Neolithic dietary, health and economic patterns along the Yellow River. Our results are encouraging in that regular seasonal growth patterning is observed in the northern control sample, which is from the same region as our archaeological investigation. Problem Various approaches have been developed to improve the antibody response of zona pellucida glycoprotein-3 ( ZP3) vaccination. In this study, we investigated whether GM-CSF and IL-5 can be used as cytokine adjuvants to increase the humoral immune response generated by mouse ZP3 ( mZP3) DNA vaccine. Method of study Mice in experimental group were injected by GM-CSF 4 days before the co-immunization of IL-5 and mZP3 DNA vaccine. The contraception and the correlation with humoral and cellular immune responses were analyzed after immunization and mating. The effect of cytokine adjuvant on the maturation of DCs was evaluated. Results Co-immunization of GM-CSF and IL-5 with mZP3 DNA vaccine induced the highest level of serum IgG and IL-4 expression in CD4+ T cells. Importantly, this strategy reduced mice fertility without disrupting normal ovarian morphology. GM-CSF enhanced the maturation of DCs evidenced by up-regulating the expression of MHC-II and CD86. Conclusion GM-CSF and IL-5 co-administration enhanced humoral immune responses to mZP3, and this may be a potential strategy for development of immunocontraceptive vaccine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) grafting modifiers were synthesized by emulsion grafting poly(acrylonitrile-styrene) (SAN) copolymer onto polybutadiene (PB) latex rubber particles. The chain transfer reagent tert-dodecyl mercaptan (TDDM) was used to regulate the grafting degree of ABS and the molecular weight of SAN copolymers. By blending these ABS modifiers with Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) resin, a series of CPVC/ABS blends were obtained. The morphology, compatibility, and the mechanical properties of CPVC/ABS blends were investigated. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies showed that the ABS domain all uniformly dispersed in CPVC matrix. Dynamic mechanical analyses (DMA) results showed that the compatibility between CPVC and SAN became enhanced with the TDDM content. From the mechanical properties study of the CPVC/ABS blends, it was revealed that the impact strength first increases and then decreases with the TDDM content, which means that the compatibility between CPVC and the SAN was not the only requirement for maximizing toughness. The decreasing of tensile strength and the elongations might attribute to the lower entanglement between chains of CPVC and SAN. POLYM. ENG.
