A dual‐responsive shape memory polymer, inspired by the heliotropic behavior of sunflowers, holds promise for innovative research, amalgamating the distinctive traits of shape memory polymers with nature's sunflower dynamics. In this investigation, we crafted a heat and light dual‐responsive shape memory polymer through liquid crystal display 3D printing technology, employing a meticulously formulated resin composition. The resin comprised epoxy acrylate as an oligomer, hydroxyethyl methacrylate as a monomer, and phenylic(2,4,6‐trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide as a photo initiator. To confer light responsiveness, graphene oxide particles were integrated into the polymer matrix, designed to selectively absorb light wavelengths and instigate the shape memory effect upon light exposure. The resultant shape memory polymer showcased exceptional mechanical robustness and manifested superior responsiveness to temperature and light stimuli. Seed germination and dormancy represent critical phases in the life cycle of plants, tightly regulated by endogenous phytochrome levels and environment signals. High temperatures (HT) induce the overaccumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increase abscisic acid (ABA), thereby inhibiting seed germination. Our previous findings showed that HT induced the burst of reactive nitrogen species (RNS), increasing the S‐nitrosylation modification of HFR1, which effectively blocks seed germination. Importantly, stabilizing HFR1 has been shown to significantly mitigate the inhibitory effect of HT on seed germination. In this study, we reported that HT increased the protein abundance of ABI4, a crucial component in ABA signaling, which in turn activates the expression of RbohD while suppressing the expression of VTC2. This leads to the rapid generation of ROS, thereby inhibiting seed germination. Consistently, the seed germination of abi4 mutant showed insensitivity to HT with lower ROS level during seed germination, whereas transgenic lines overexpressing ABI4 showed reduced germination rates accompanied by elevated ROS levels. Furthermore, we noted that HFR1 interacts with ABI4 to sequester its activity under normal conditions. However, HT‐induced ROS triggered the degradation of HFR1, consequently releasing ABI4 activity. This activation of ABI4 promotes RbohD expression, culminating in a ROS burst that suppresses seed germination. Thus, our study unveils a novel function for ABI4 in regulating ROS level and seed germination under HT stress. Throughout this process, HFR1 plays a critical role in restraining ABI4 activity to maintain an optimal endogenous ROS level, thereby ensuring seed germination under favorable environmental conditions. Conductive hydrogels have shown significant potential in the realm of flexible electronics; however, using water as a solvent introduces problems such as low‐temperature freezing and water loss. One possible solution to address these limitations is replacing water with deep eutectic solvents (DES). In this study, the PHEAA–gelatin–MXene (PGM) eutectogels are constructed with poly(N‐hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (PHEAA) and gelatin as the main components, and MXene nanosheets are added as nanofillers. The PGM eutectogels exhibit exceptional tensile and compressive mechanical properties, including remarkable stretchability (940%), high strength (0.5 MPa), high toughness (1.39 MJ m−3), and impressive compressive strength (0.3 MPa at 80% strain). Additionally, the PGM eutectogels demonstrate excellent adhesion, anti‐freezing, and long‐term anti‐drying abilities. Moreover, the PGM eutectogels multifunctional sensors allow high sensitivity, which enables accurate real‐time and stable monitoring of human activities over a wide temperature range. ChinaMu is the largest sequence‐indexed Mutator (Mu) transposon insertional library in maize (Zea mays). In this study, we made significant improvements to the size and quality of the ChinaMu library. We developed a new Mu‐tag isolation method Mu‐Tn5‐seq (MuT‐seq). Compared to the previous method used by ChinaMu, MuT‐seq recovered 1/3 more germinal insertions, while requiring only about 1/14 of the sequencing volume and 1/5 of the experimental time. Using MuT‐seq, we identified 113,879 germinal insertions from 3,168 Mu‐active F1 families. We also assembled a high‐quality genome for the Mu‐active line Mu‐starter, which harbors the initial active MuDR element and was used as the pollen donor for the mutation population. Using the Mu‐starter genome, we recovered 33,662 (15.6%) additional germinal insertions in 3,244 (7.4%) genes in the Mu‐starter line. The Mu‐starter genome also improved the assignment of 117,689 (54.5%) germinal insertions. The newly upgraded ChinaMu dataset currently contains 215,889 high‐quality germinal insertions. These insertions cover 32,224 pan‐genes in the Mu‐starter and B73Ref5 genomes, including 23,006 (80.4%) core genes shared by the two genomes. As a test model, we investigated Mu insertions in the pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) superfamily, discovering insertions for 92% (449/487) of PPR genes in ChinaMu, demonstrating the usefulness of ChinaMu as a functional genomics resource for maize. Photonic devices based on silicon waveguides are essential to versatile high‐performance and low‐cost photonic integrated systems. Extremely complex silicon photonic devices with hundreds or even thousands of degrees of freedom (DOF) are successfully designed and manufactured based on recent advances in data science and nanofabrication technology. At this level, conventional forward‐reasoning may no longer be suitable for designing high‐performance silicon photonic devices with novel functionalities since the light‐matter interaction is complex and non‐intuitive. Therefore, the timely development of sub‐wavelength silicon photonic devices that can precisely mold the flow of light is a critical and urgent issue requiring joint engineering and scientific efforts. In this paper, an inverse design strategy based on heuristic and gradient descendant algorithms, enabling the realization of large‐scale integrated devices is first introduced. Subsequently, the burgeoning deep learning technology, which offers a promising direction for the automation design of silicon photonics with a data‐driven approach, is discussed. Finally, the obstacles and prospects in this emerging research direction are revealed. Detail discussions from multiple perspectives are provided. Background: Sevoflurane and propofol are two popular anesthetics used during glioblastoma (GBM) surgery. This investigation compared the molecular subtypes and immune checkpoints of cancer cells following GBM surgery under sevoflurane and propofol anesthesia. Method: The expression profile data and clinical information of glioma samples of different grades were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas database. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis was used to identify hub modules and key genes related to glioma grades (G2 and G3). The GEO database (GSE179004) was used to retrieve glioma surgical specimens with different anesthetic gene expression profiles. The differential expression of immune checkpoint genes under various anesthetic settings was examined using the R‐ggplot2. Results: Compared to sevoflurane, propofol significantly downregulated SERPINI1 and CAMK2A expression. These are also important factors in glioma grading. Simultaneously, SERPINI1 and CAMK2A were also significantly related to the prognosis of GBM and lower‐grade glioma patients and acted as potential tumor suppressors. In addition, propofol increases the expression of the immune checkpoint molecule, PD‐L1. Conclusions: Our study revealed that sevoflurane can more effectively prevent the development of glioma after surgery than propofol, and SERPINI1 can be used as a new independent prognostic factor for glioma. Pressure‐sensitive paints (PSPs) have been demonstrated to be very important for aerodynamics research. In order to improve the pressure sensitivity and adhesion ability of PSP, herein, a series of fluorine‐containing copolymers compositing of an oxygen and pressure‐responsive probe derived from platinum(II)‐5,10,15,20‐tetrakis‐(2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorophenyl)‐porphyrin (PtTFPP) named as poly[(tBs)a‐co‐(TFEM)b‐co‐(PtTFPP‐1MA)c] were synthesized and investigated as PSPs. These PSPs were constructed with different fluorine ratios for the investigation of the effect of fluorine contents on PSPs. Especially, PSP (F0.33) with the trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEM) molar ratio of 33% in the copolymers could adhere well to the surface of an aircraft model. F0.33 showed high oxygen sensitivity (I0/I100 = 32.87), reasonable response time to oxygen (44 s), high pressure sensitivity (SP = 0.75%/kPa at 20°C) and low temperature response (ST = −0.77%/°C at 100 kPa). F0.33 was further sprayed on the surface of a delta wing of an aircraft model and its pressure response was verified in a wind tunnel. The data from F0.33 film at the same wind speed and position were close to the pressure data measured by using traditional method using open pressure holes, showing the potential application of these PSPs. This article discusses a recent study on predicting early recurrence after surgical resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The study developed and validated a scoring model called ERS to stratify the risk of early recurrence for BCLC 0/A HCC. The authors of the article conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with BCLC 0/A/B HCC after hepatic resection and found that the ERS model demonstrated good discriminatory ability for different risk HCC patients in China. Currently, graphite (Gr) and potassium metal are two typical and widely used anodes for potassium‐ion batteries (PIBs). Unfortunately, the inevitable electrochemical prepotassiation of Gr anode and the unprocessable nature of K metal hinder the advancement of potassium‐ion pouch cells. There is an urgent need to develop alternative anodes for promoting the practical applications of PIBs. Herein, KC8 is proposed as a specialized anode for the research of PIBs. By taking a chemical prepotassiation strategy, a large‐area KC8 foil is successfully fabricated for the first time. Through molecularly tailoring K‐arene complex, the Gibb's free energy of the Gr prepotassiation reaction can be changed, thus enabling accurate preparation of pure‐phase KC8.The size‐controllable KC8 anode exhibits a high areal capacity of 1.49 mAh cm−2 comparable to the commercial Gr anode used in lithium‐ion batteries. Based on this, a stackable pouch cell delivers an unprecedented high capacity of 106 mAh and high energy density >100 Wh kg−1cathode+anode. Rain‐fed rice (Oryza sativa L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (RFRW) rotation can be a resource‐saving solution for sustainable cropping systems. However, conventional puddled and flood transplanted rice, repeat tractor compaction, and years of shallow rotary tillage and paddy–dryland rotation had a negative impact on soil physical in the RFRW rotation (e.g., soil consolidation and shrinkage, shallow tillage layer). A 4‐yr field experiment was established to determine if different post‐paddy tillage systems would improve soil physical properties and plant factors. We compared no‐tillage (NT), conventional rotary tillage (RT), and deep tillage (DT) to improve the deteriorated soil structure, soil water, wheat root system, and grain yield. The results indicated that DT increased the average soil water content by 7.25% and 9.98%, increased field capacity by 9.58 and 5.23%, and decreased the soil bulk density by 6.2 and 2.2% at 0‐to‐20‐cm soil depth in 4 yr as compared to NT and RT, respectively. The NT increased the average relative soil moisture and had higher soil bulk density at 0‐to‐20‐cm depth. The DT deepened the root growth and increased the total root point numbers by 21.0 and 22.8% at 0‐to‐40‐cm soil depth in 4 yr, respectively, compared with NT and RT. In 4 yr, the DT significantly achieved higher average grain yield by 5.3 and 13.5%, respectively, compared with NT and RT. Overall, DT after rice was shown to be a promising management approach for improving wheat yields and might enable sustainable intensification of RFRW rotation. The presence of apoptosis inhibition proteins renders the cancer cells resistant to apoptosis, severely compromising the antitumor efficacy of sonodynamic therapy (SDT). Here, an intelligent anticancer nanoplatform based on an Aza‐boron‐dipyrromethene dye (denoted as Aza‐BDY) is elaborately established for ferroptosis augmented SDT through cysteine (Cys) starvation. After endocytosis by tumor cells, Aza‐BDY serves as both a ferroptosis inducing agent and a sonosensitizer for tumor treatment. The specific Cys response facilitates the disruption of redox homeostasis and initiation of cellular ferroptosis. Meanwhile, the released sonosensitizer causes efficient SDT and augments ferroptosis under ultrasound irradiation. Detailed in vitro and in vivo investigations demonstrate that the synergistic effect of Cys depletion and singlet oxygen (1O2) generation significantly induces cancer‐cell death and suppresses tumor proliferation with a high inhibition rate of 97.5 %. Traditional adhesives such as cyanoacrylate glue are mostly solvent‐based. They are facing the problem of insufficient adhesion to some substrates, and also from the drawback of volatilization and release of small organic molecules in the process of usage. Therefore, a novel adhesive with non‐irritating, high adhesive strength, and antibacterial properties is highly required. In this study, a full physically crosslinked zwitterionic poly(betaine sulfonate methacrylate) (PSBMA) hydrogel is proposed. The physical crosslinking interactions endow the hydrogel with good self‐healing properties. Furthermore, the pure physical crosslinking hydrogel can form PSBMA powder adhesive after lyophilization and return to the hydrogel state after hydration. The mechanical properties of PSBMA adhesive can be modulated via adjusting the solid content and initiator dosage. Following the cure process similar to that of snail mucus or insect exoskeletons in nature, the adhesion of the PSBMA adhesive is improved at least 100 times than its wet state. In addition, the PSBMA adhesive is easy to be removed due to the dissociation of cross‐linked structures in saltwater environments. Moreover, PSBMA adhesive with antifouling properties can effectively prevent the adhesion of proteins and bacteria, which shows potential applications in the assembly of medical devices. Skin‐attachable conductive hydrogels are ideal candidates for the design of flexible and wearable electronics, and tremendous efforts are devoted to preparing multifunctional hydrogels. However, antibacterial ability and ultraviolet (UV)‐blocking property are still essential yet rarely reported. In this study, a novel ionically conductive multifunctional polyacrylamide (PAAm)/chitosan (CS)/tannic acid (TA) hydrogel (PCT hydrogel) with transparency, adhesiveness, antibacterial activity, and UV‐blocking ability simultaneously is fabricated via a facile one‐pot strategy. In the hydrogel, PAAm chains form the backbone of PCT hydrogel, CS and TA endow hydrogel with antibacterial activity (>97%) and UV‐blocking ability (>96%), respectively. More importantly, existing free ions also endue PCT hydrogel with conductivity (0.256 ± 0.005 S m−1) and strain sensitivity (GF > 3). The prepared PCT hydrogel‐based strain sensors can effectively monitor various human movements, indicating their huge potential in soft robotics, human–machine interaction, and health‐monitoring systems. Pesticide overuse is a major global problem and the cause of this problem is noticeable pesticide loss from undesired bouncing of sprayed pesticide droplets and rain erosion. This further becomes a primary source of soil and groundwater pollution. Herein, the authors report a method that can enhance pesticide droplet deposition and adhesion on superhydrophobic plant leave surfaces by amyloid‐like aggregation of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Through the reduction of the disulfide bond of BSA by tris(2‐carboxyethyl) phosphine hydrochloride (TCEP), the amyloid‐like phase transition of BSA is triggered that rapidly affords abundant phase‐transitioned BSA (PTB) oligomers to facilitate the invasion of the PTB droplet into the nanostructures on a leaf surface. Such easy penetration is further followed by a robust amyloid‐mediated interfacial adhesion of PTB on leaf surface. As a result, after mixing with pesticides, the PTB system exhibits a remarkable pesticide adhesion capacity that is more than 10 times higher than conventional fixation of commercial pesticides. The practical farmland experiments show that the use of PTB aggregation could reduce the use of pesticides by 70–90% while ensuring yield. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) owns an excellent self‐lubricating performance, but its wear rate is very high due to the large‐scale spalling of the matrix in the friction. In this paper, A new kind of PTFE composites with sandwich structure was prepared by layer‐press technology, whose middle layer is filled with metal mesh. The influence of the mesh structure and mesh density of middle metal layer on tribological properties of composites were researched in detail. The results revealled that the metal mesh located in the composites can efficiently prevent the large‐scale spalling of PTFE, which induces the sample of PTFE/500# plain woven dutch metal mesh (PTFE‐500#PWD) to have a lower wear rate (9 × 10−5 mm3/Nm) and COF (0.106) under the fixed experimental condition. The prepared PTFE/metal mesh composites reveal excellent anti‐friction and anti‐wear performance, which can be used to fabricate a new kind of self‐lubricating materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The micro‐ring resonator (MRR) is a crucial element in integrated photonics. It allows for the realization of various optical devices, including integrated filters, modulators, micro‐ring laser cavities, detectors, optical logic switches, and nonlinear optical devices. The development of integrated photonics has enabled the integration of these devices with other components into a photonic chip to perform specific functions. For instance, widely tunable MRR‐based lasers have been integrated with optical phased arrays (OPAs), detectors, and other elements to form a fully integrated LiDAR engine. Advances in nanofabrication have facilitated the miniaturization of nanophotonic phased arrays and on‐chip lasers. MRR‐based integrated external cavity lasers (ECLs) and integrated optical frequency combs (OFCs) have significantly enhanced the scanning and detection capabilities of LiDAR recently. Additionally, their size and power consumption have been continuously reduced, rendering them suitable for chip‐scale integration. So far, most techniques for modifying perovskite solar cells (PSCs) focus on either the perovskite or electron transport layer (ETL). For the sake of comprehensively improving device performance, a dual‐functional method of simultaneously passivating trap defects in both the perovskite and ETL films is proposed that utilizes guidable transfer of Eu3+ in SnO2 to perovskite. Europium ions are distributed throughout the SnO2 film during the formation process of SnO2, and they can diffuse directionally through the SnO2/perovskite interface into the perovskite, while most of the europium ions remain at the interface. Under the synergistic effect of distributed Eu3+ in the SnO2 and aggregated Eu3+ at the interface, the electron mobilities of ETLs are evidently improved. Meanwhile, diffused Eu3+ ions passivate the perovskite to reduce trap densities at the grain boundaries, which can dramatically elevate the open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of PSCs. Finally, the mainly PSCs coated on SnO2:Eu3+ ETL achieve a power conversion efficiency of 20.14%. Moreover, an unsealed device degrades by only 13% after exposure to ambient atmosphere for 84 days. More than two‐thirds of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cannot receive curative therapy and have poor survival due to late diagnosis and few prognostic directions. In our study, nontargeted and targeted metabolomics analyses were conducted by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry to characterize metabolic features of HCC and identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarker candidate incorporating liver tissue and serum metabolites. A total of 552 subjects, including 432 with liver tissue and 120 with serum specimens, were recruited in China. In the discovery cohort, a series of 138 metabolites were identified to discriminate HCC tissues from matched nontumor tissues. Retinol presented with the highest area under the curve (AUC) of 0.991 and associated with Edmondson grade. In the validation cohort, all metabolites in retinol metabolism pathway were examined and the levels of retinol and retinal in tumor tissue and serum decreased in the order of normal to cirrhosis to HCC of Edmondson Grades I to IV. Retinol and retinal levels could also differentiate between HCC and cirrhosis, with AUCs of 0.996 and 0.994, respectively, in tissue and 0.812 and 0.744, respectively, in serum. The AUC of the combined retinol and retinal panel in serum was 0.852. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression identified this panel as an independent predictor for HCC and showed that low expression of retinol and retinal correlated with decreased survival time. In conclusion, the retinol metabolic signature had considerable diagnostic and prognostic value for identifying HCC patients who would benefit from prompt therapy and optimal prognostic direction. Machine‐induced soil disturbance may negatively impact the sustainability of a smallholder farming system. On‐farm studies at 143 fields were conducted over three crop seasons with the goal of quantifying the effect of soil disturbance on rice (Oryza sativa L.) paddy productivity induced by small harvesters (i.e., power <75 kW, weight < 3.5 Mg, and working width <2200 mm). A field survey toolbox containing fine‐layered cone penetration test, soil micro‐relief measurement, soil physics test (water content, bulk density, and porosity), documentation of field attributes, harvesters' technical specifications, cropping systems, and farmers' practices was used for field observation. Results showed that harvester traffic increased soil bulk density and decreased soil porosity. However, harvester‐induced soil changes in statistics were not detected. In addition, trafficked lanes had great soil strength (P =.05) than non‐trafficked lanes, and equipment induced compaction was limited to the surface 150 mm. Therefore, small harvesters minimized subsurface soil damage. However, regardless of the model and specification, all harvesters caused ruts. Small field sizes, irregular field shapes, inconsistent field management practices, lacking soil protection awareness, excessive soil water content during rice harvesting and random field traffic were identified as major factors aggravating soil disturbance. Above these, several well‐established approaches to alleviate machine‐induced soil damage were also observed during the field survey, including pre‐harvesting drainage, floating chassis, ultra‐narrow wheels, and puddling. The present work aims to develop a composite that takes the advantages of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) such as wide absorption band, high optical absorption coefficient and chemical stability as well as the nano‐sized silver sulfide with excellent redox capacity and the strong absorption in the visible range. Such nanocomposites were crafted on a template developed using polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified Graphene oxide (GO). The adsorption properties of methylene blue dyes were tested. With the large specific surface area, the as prepared nanocomposites achieved the removal rate of the blue dye up to 99.0%. The adsorption process was able to be described using the Freundlich isothermal model, wherein, the maximum adsorption capacity was obtained as 348 mg⋅g−1. Thermodynamic analysis indicates the adsorption is entropy driven process with ΔG < 0, ΔH > 0, and ΔS > 0. Male patients with multiple morphological abnormalities of the sperm flagella (MMAF) are infertile and exhibit absent, short, coiled, bent and/or irregular sperm flagella. Mutations in the SPEF2 gene reduce sperm motility and cause sperm tail defects in animal models and humans. In the present study, we performed a genetic analysis on an MMAF patient and identified novel biallelic mutations in the SPEF2 gene. The biallelic mutations were confirmed by Sanger sequencing and in silico analysis revealed that, these variations were deleterious. The expression of truncated SPEF2 protein was reduced significantly in the patient's spermatozoa. The spermatozoa harbored biallelic mutations and showed severe ultrastructural defects in the axoneme and mitochondrial sheath. We further explored the effect of oophorectomy on the association between hysterectomy and these health outcomes.PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science were searched up to 24 July 2023.Cohort studies.Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were pooled using a random‐effects model. We used I2 to assess the heterogeneity between studies.Forty‐three studies were included in the meta‐analysis. Hysterectomy was significantly associated with an increased risk of CVD (pooled HR 1.11, 95% CI 1.09–1.13; n = 6; I2 = 0) and stroke (HR 1.09, 95% CI 1.04–1.14; n = 7; I2 = 52%), but with a decreased risk of cancer mortality (HR 0.93, 95% CI 0.86–1.00; n = 4; I2 = 81%). No significant association was observed between hysterectomy and CHD (n = 10; I2 = 83%), all‐cause mortality (n = 8; I2 = 81%) or cardiovascular mortality (n = 7; I2 = 89%). Hysterectomy with and without oophorectomy was significantly associated with CVD and stroke risk, but showed a larger effect size for hysterectomy with oophorectomy. A significantly increased risk of CHD was observed in the subgroup of hysterectomy with oophorectomy, but not for the subgroup of hysterectomy alone.Hysterectomy may increase the risk of CVD, CHD and stroke, but not all‐cause, cardiovascular or cancer mortality. Hysterectomy with oophorectomy may have a higher risk of CVD, CHD and stroke than hysterectomy alone. A series of novel aminopyrimidine and diaminopyrimidine derivatives were designed and optimized to improve their potency and permeability relative to lead compound 1 (IC50 = 37.4 μM), which was discovered in a previous virtual screening. The potency of the optimized compound, 13g (IC50 = 1.4 μM), was 26‐fold greater than that of 1 based on a fluorescence resonance energy transfer assay, and a parallel artificial membrane permeability assay suggested that it could pass through the blood‐brain barrier. A superconductor-normal metal (SN) junction is fabricated on the surface of a few-layer MoS2 flake. Superconductivity is induced by ionic liquid gating, and an h-BN flake is used to locally separate ionic liquid from the surface of MoS2. The h-BN covered channel remains semiconducting, therefore an SN junction forms at the interface between the exposed and h-BN covered MoS2 channel. Transport properties at the SN junction are studied at low temperatures and under magnetic fields. The probability of observing Andreev reflection is discussed based on the BTK model. A class of pyridazinone derivatives as near-infrared optical probes in fluorescence microscopy images was designed. The design strategy consisted of the stepwise extension and modification of pyridazinone by expansion of the electron-donating moiety to a larger π-conjugated system and anchoring a subcellular directing group such as triphenylphosphine or morpholine. All the desired products were successfully applied in cell imaging with high subcellular colocalization. Furthermore, these fluorescent probes showed excellent performance in mouse-brain imaging. Phthalazinone derivatives were designed as optical probes for one- and two-photon fluorescence microscopy imaging. The design strategy involves stepwise extension and modification of pyridazinone by 1) expansion of pyridazinone to phthalazinone, a larger conjugated system, as the electron acceptor, 2) coupling of electron-donating aromatic groups such as N, N-diethylaminophenyl, thienyl, naphthyl, and quinolyl to the phthalazinone, and 3) anchoring of an alkyl chain to the phthalazinone with various terminal substituents such as triphenylphosphonio, morpholino, triethylammonio, N-methylimidazolio, pyrrolidino, and piperidino. Theoretical calculations were utilized to verify the initial design. The desired fluorescent probes were synthesized by two different routes in considerable yields. Twenty-two phthalazinone derivatives were synthesized and their photophysical properties were measured. Selected compounds were applied in cell imaging, and valuable information was obtained. Objectives Apoptosis of nucleus pulposus ( NP) cells is a major cause of intervertebral disc degeneration. To elucidate relationships between caveolin-1 and cytokine-induced apoptosis, we investigated the role of caveolin-1 in cytokine-induced apoptosis in rat NP cells and the related signalling pathway. Materials and methods Rat NP cells were treated with interleukin ( IL)-1β or tumour necrosis factor alpha ( TNF-α), and knockdown of caveolin-1 and β-catenin was achieved using specific si RNAs. Then, apoptotic level of rat NP cells and expression and activation of caveolin-1/β-catenin signalling were assessed by flow cytometric analysis, qRT- PCR, western blotting and luciferase assays. The relationship between the mitogen-activated protein kinase ( MAPK) pathway and caveolin-1 promoter activity was also determined by luciferase assays. Results IL-1β and TNF-α induced apoptosis, upregulated caveolin-1 expression and activated Wnt/β-catenin signalling in rat NP cells, while the induction effect of cytokines was reversed by caveolin-1 si RNA and β-catenin si RNA. Promotion of rat NP cell apoptosis and nuclear translocation of β-catenin induced by caveolin-1 overexpression were abolished by β-catenin si RNA. Furthermore, pretreatment with a p38 MAPK inhibitor or dominant negative-p38, blocked cytokine-dependent induction of caveolin-1/β-catenin expression and activity. Conclusions The results revealed the role of p38/caveolin-1/β-catenin in inflammatory cytokine-induced apoptosis in rat NP cells. A ruthenium-catalyzed switchable N-H/C-H alkenylation reaction of 6-phenyl-(dihydro)pyridazin-3(2 H)-ones triggered by a nitrogen/oxygen atmosphere was developed. To achieve switchable modification of the two important sites of the widely used pharmacophore, a simple and efficient procedure containing two optimized ruthenium catalytic systems was utilized, which afforded excellent activity, high selectivity, and good tolerance of a wide range of functional groups. In many herbivorous insects, the attraction to suitable host plants is in partmediated by similar olfactory cues from different host plants. This study investigated the electrophysiological and behavioral responses of female Maruca vitrata Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) to floral volatiles from two host plants, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walpers and Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet (both Fabaceae). Qualitative and quantitative differences were found between the odor profiles of two host plants by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Nine electroantennography-active compounds were detected in the headspace collections of the two host plants by means of coupled GC-electroantennographic detection. In a wind tunnel, female behaviors (upwind flight and source approach) were not affected by stimuli or their interaction with host plants, but the behaviors were influenced by host plants. A mixture of the nine bioactive compounds, including limonene, 1,3-diethylbenzene, benzaldehyde, acetophenone, 4-ethylbenzaldehyde, 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-ethanone, 2-methyl-3-phenylpropanal, 1H-indol-4-ol, and 1,10-(1,4-phenylene)bis-ethanone mimicking L. purpureus (in a ratio of 0.4:9.7:2.4:5.7:78.1:4.8:100:0.6:30.3) attracted significantly more females approaching the sources compared with the mixture of compounds mimicking V. unguiculata (in a ratio of 0.3:1.4:1.6:3.7:50.8:3.2:100:4.2:16.7). Further bioassays revealed that a subtractive 4-component blend [limonene, 1,3-diethylbenzene, 4-ethylbenzaldehyde, and 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-ethanone in a ratio of 0.4:9.7:78.1:4.8] was essential formaximal attraction. Our study suggested that female M. vitrata might use similar odors from V. unguiculata and L. purpureus to locate suitable hosts and that an artificial lure, containing the major floral volatiles released by the two host plants, might be useful in exploring efficiency monitoring and/or control strategies of this moth in the field. Continuous ethanol fermentation using polyvinyl alcohol ( PVA), immobilized yeast, and sugarcane molasses (22 and 35°Bx) with 8 g/L urea was run in a combined bioreactor system consisting of three-stage tubular bioreactors in series. The effect of the dilution rate ( D) at 0.0037, 0.0075, 0.0117, 0.0145, 0.018, and 0.0282 H−1 on continuous ethanol fermentation was investigated in this study. The results showed that D had a significant effect on fermentation efficiency, sugar-utilized rate, ethanol yield, and ethanol productivity in this designed continuous fermentation system. The D had a linear relationship with residual sugar and ethanol production under certain conditions. The highest fermentation efficiency of 83.26%, ethanol yield of 0.44 g/g, and the lowest residual sugar content of 6.50 g/L were achieved at 0.0037 H−1 in the fermentation of 22°Bx molasses, indicating that the immobilization of cells using PVA, sugarcane pieces, and cotton towel is feasible and the established continuous system performs well. A simple and efficient procedure for the synthesis of pyridazin-3(2 H)-ones through copper-catalyzed dehydrogenation of a single C-C bond of 4,5-dihydropyridazin-3(2 H)-ones to a C=C bond with oxygen as the terminal oxidant is described. Functional groups including hydroxy, carboxylic, bromo, chloro, cyano, nitro and alkoxy were all tolerated under the reaction conditions. Moreover, this methodology was applied to the preparation of a series of structurally similar N-substituted 6-phenylpyridazinone compounds containing fluorine. There is widespread interest in the application, optimization, and evolution of the transition-metal-catalyzed arylation of N-heteroarenes to discover full-color tunable fluorescent core frameworks. Inspired by the versatile roles of pyridazinone in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, herein, we report a simple and efficient copper-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction for the N-functionalization of pyridazinones in neat water. To achieve the efficient conversion of pyridazinones and organic halides in aqueous phase, a series of copper-salen complexes composed of different Schiff base ligands were investigated by rational design. A final choice of fine-tuned hydrophilicity balanced with lipophilicity among the candidates was confirmed, which affords excellent activity towards the reaction of a wide range of pyridazinones and organic halides. More importantly, the products as N-substituted pyridazinones were synthesized rationally by this methodology as full-color tunable fluorescent agents (426-612 nm). The N2 position of pyridazinones was modified by different aryl group such as benzothiazole, N, N-dimethylaniline, 3-quinoline, 4-isoquinoline and 2-thiophene, resulting in a series of full-color tunable fluorescent reagents. Meanwhile, the effects of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups of the 6-substituted phenyl ring have also been investigated to optimize the fluorescent properties. These fluorescent core frameworks were studied in several cell lines as fluorescent dyes. Different colors from blue to red were observed by using fluorescence microscopy and confocal microscopy. Cardiovascular disease prevalence and mortality are both increased by insulin resistance, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. The large-conductance Ca(2+)-activated K(+) channel (BK(Ca)) plays a pivotal role in the diastolic function of vascular smooth muscle cells. However, the role of this channel in insulin resistance remains unknown. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into an insulin resistant group and control group. We investigated the BK(Ca) current and subunit expression in myocytes from aortas and mesenteric arteries by Western blot, real-time PCR and the whole-cell patch-clamp methods. BK(Ca) current was decreased in smooth muscle cells in insulin resistant rats, compared with that in control group. Peak BK(Ca) current at + 60 mV was significantly decreased after iberiotoxin (IBTX) perfusion at 100 nmol/L (64.2 ± 4.7 versus 20.3 ± 3.5% in thoracic aortas and 65.6 ± 6.2 versus 29.3 ± 3.9% in mesenteric arteries, both p < 0.01). However, there was no significant difference in BK(Ca) alpha subunit between the two groups, both at the level of mRNA and protein. BK(Ca) beta 1 subunit expression in aortas and mesenteric arteries from the insulin resistant group was lower than in those from control group. The plasma level of nitric oxide was higher in the insulin resistant group than in the control group. Our results demonstrated that the BK(Ca) channel is decreased both in macrovessels and microvessels in insulin resistant rats.
