Natural killer cell‐derived extracellular vesicles (NK‐EVs) are candidate biotherapeutics against various cancers. However, standardised potency assays are necessary for a reliable assessment of NK‐EVs' cytotoxicity. This study aims to thoroughly evaluate a highly sensitive resazurin phenoxazine‐based cell viability potency assay (measurement of the cellular redox metabolism) for quantifying the cytotoxicity of NK‐EVs against leukaemia K562 cells (suspension model) and breast cancer MDA‐MB‐231 cells (adherent model) in vitro. The assay was evaluated based on common analytical parameters setforth by regulatory guidelines, including specificity, selectivity,accuracy, precision, linearity, range and stability. Our results revealed that this resazurin‐based cell viability potency assay reliably and reproducibly measured a dose‐response of NK‐EVs' cytotoxic activity against both cancer models. The assay showed precision with 5% and 20% variation for intra‐run and inter‐run variability. The assay signal showed specificity and selectivity of NK‐EVs against cancer target cells, as evidenced by the diminished viability of cancer cells following a 5‐hour treatment with NK‐EVs, without any detectable interference or background. The linearity analysis of target cancer cells revealed strong linearity for densities of 5000 K562 and 1000 MDA‐MB‐231 cells per test with a consistent range. Importantly, NK‐EVs' dose‐response for cytotoxicity showed a strong correlation (|ρ| ∼ 0.8) with the levels of known cytotoxic factors associated with the NK‐EVs' corona (FasL, GNLY, GzmB, PFN and IFN‐γ), thereby validating the accuracy of the assay. The assay also distinguished cytotoxicity changes in degraded NK‐EVs, indicating the ability of the assay to detect the potential loss of sample integrity. Compared to other commonly reported bioassays (i.e., flow cytometry, cell counting, lactate dehydrogenase release assay, DNA‐binding reporter assay and confluence assay), our results support this highly sensitive resazurin‐based viability potency assay as a high‐throughput and quantitative method for assessing NK‐EVs' cytotoxicity against both suspension and adherent cancer models for evaluating NK‐EVs' biotherapeutics. Aim: To investigate the efficacy and safety of pioglitazone compared to placebo when added to metformin plus dapagliflozin, a sodium‐glucose cotransporter‐2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Materials and Methods: In a multicentre study, with a randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled design, 249 Korean patients with T2DM suboptimally managed on metformin and dapagliflozin were assigned to receive either pioglitazone (15 mg daily) or placebo for 24 weeks, followed by a 24‐week pioglitazone extension. Primary outcomes included changes in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), with secondary outcomes assessing insulin resistance, adiponectin levels, lipid profiles, liver enzymes, body weight and waist circumference. Results: Pioglitazone administration resulted in a significant reduction in HbA1c levels (from 7.80% ± 0.72% to 7.27% ± 0.82%) compared with placebo (from 7.79% ± 0.76% to 7.69% ± 0.86%, corrected mean difference: −0.42% ± 0.08%; p < 0.01) at 24 weeks. Additional benefits from pioglitazone treatment included enhanced insulin sensitivity, increased adiponectin levels, raised high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and reduced liver enzyme levels, resulting in improvement in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease liver fat score. Despite no serious adverse events in either group, pioglitazone therapy was modestly but significantly associated with weight gain and increased waist circumference. Conclusions: Adjunctive pioglitazone treatment in T2DM inadequately controlled with metformin and dapagliflozin demonstrates considerable glycaemic improvement, metabolic benefits, and a low risk of hypoglycaemia. This letter introduces a novel integrated framework for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) tailored for general agricultural applications. The framework combines a cutting‐edge SLAM method, LIO‐SAM, with covariance intersection for sensor fusion. Agricultural robots often operate in unstructured environments with sparse feature points and encounter repeated similar information, such as trees. Therefore, a fusion framework based on 3D SLAM augmented with additional information, such as feature‐independent GPS data, becomes essential. This study proposes an integrated SLAM framework by introducing a convergence strategy based on covariance analysis, incorporating a state‐of‐the‐art 3D SLAM technique. The convergence methods, namely "dynamic weight assignment" and "winner takes all", are presented alternatively, tailored to seamlessly integrate with the proposed framework. Evaluations using a public dataset and an experiment demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach through numerical analysis and visual representation. The results illustrate that this method surpasses conventional approaches in accurately estimating the robot's position. Scholarly research on virtual reality (VR) is characterized by a dynamic tension between VR's potential and the challenges impeding its adoption. Grounded in a mixed‐methods systematic review, this research examines the drivers influencing consumer VR adoption by rigorously combining qualitative and quantitative analyses of 158 scholarly articles ranging from 1996 to 2023. Based on an extensive analysis of VR adoption literature, we introduce the Virtual Reality Integrated Adoption Framework (VRIAF), which is the first mixed‐methods systematic review focusing exclusively on VR adoption. This empirically substantiated model integrates key determinants of VR adoption such as consumer attitudes, perceived enjoyment, ease of use, social influences, and previous user experiences. The research identifies four pivotal themes through qualitative exploration, further elucidated by quantitative meta‐analyses and weight analyses. These themes encompass the user experience in VR environments, the role of VR in construction and design, the immersive attributes of VR technologies, and the ongoing technological advancements influencing adoption patterns. This research contributes significantly to the theoretical understanding of VR adoption and provides practical insights for VR professionals. By delineating future research directions, the study bridges the gap between theoretical exploration and practical application, offering a valuable resource for both scholars and practitioners in the field of VR. Bitterness elicits unpleasant sensations in humans, which can hinder the acceptance of foods and medication adherence. Therefore, identifying and masking bitter tastes is crucial for developing palatable foods and promoting medication compliance in the food and pharmaceutical industries. To achieve this, employing agonism and antagonism of bitter taste receptors as effective strategies at the molecular level is essential. In this study, a bioelectronic tongue is developed to characterize the agonism and antagonism of bitter taste receptors. The human bitter taste receptors hTAS2R16 and hTAS2R31 are produced using an Escherichia coli expression system and reconstituted into nanodiscs (NDs). Subsequently, hTAS2R16‐ and hTAS2R31‐NDs are immobilized on the surface of graphene field‐effect transistors (FETs) to construct bioelectronic tongues. The developed system sensitively detected the bitter agonists, salicin and saccharin, at concentrations as low as 100 fM, with high selectivity in real‐time. The dose‐dependent curves shifted and K values decreased by the antagonists of hTAS2R16 and hTAS2R31, indicating antagonism‐based masking of bitter taste. Therefore, the developed bioelectronic tongue holds promise for identifying bitter tastes and evaluating the masking of bitterness based on the agonism and antagonism of hTAS2Rs. Meat tenderness is considered the most important trait contributing to beef quality, level of consumer satisfaction, willingness to pay premium prices and industry profit. Genomic selection method would be helpful for genetic improvement of traits with low heritability and that are difficult to measure. The identification of core genes can aid genomic selection for complex traits with low heritability that are difficult to measure. We performed statistical analysis of associations between longissimus dorsi muscle tenderness and gene expression in 20 Hanwoo cattle, using Warner–Bratzler shear force and RNAseq data, respectively. We found a total of 166 core genes, from which six (ASAP1, CAPN5, ELN, SUMF2, TTC8 and MGAT4A) were regulated by 16 cis‐expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) SNPs. Notably, we found that a cis‐eQTL SNP of the ELN gene contained an MFZ‐1 binding site in its putative promoter region. Natural killer cell‐derived extracellular vesicles (NK‐EVs) have shown promising potential as biotherapeutics for cancer due to their unique attributes as cytotoxic nanovesicles against cancer cells and immune‐modulatory activity towards immune cells. However, a biomanufacturing workflow is needed to produce clinical‐grade NK‐EVs for pre‐clinical and clinical applications. This study established a novel biomanufacturing workflow using a closed‐loop hollow‐fibre bioreactor to continuously produce NK‐EVs from the clinically relevant NK92‐MI cell line under serum‐free, Xeno‐free and feeder‐free conditions following GMP‐compliant conditions. The NK92 cells grown in the bioreactor for three continuous production lots resulted in large quantities of both NK cell and NK‐EV biotherapeutics at the end of each production lot (over 109 viable cells and 1013 EVs), while retaining their cytotoxic payload (granzyme B and perforin), pro‐inflammatory cytokine (interferon‐gamma) content and cytotoxicity against the human leukemic cell line K562 with limited off‐target toxicity against healthy human fibroblast cells. This scalable biomanufacturing workflow has the potential to facilitate the clinical translation of adoptive NK cell‐based and NK‐EV‐based immunotherapies for cancer with GMP considerations. Aims: The new modified‐release formulation of tegoprazan, a novel potassium‐competitive acid blocker, is expected to improve the management of acid‐related disease, including nocturnal acid breakthrough, by prolonging the duration of acid suppression. This study aimed to explore the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of various combinations of tegoprazan with immediate‐release (IR) and delayed‐release (DR) formulations. Methods: A three‐cohort, open‐label, randomized, single‐dose, three‐treatment, six‐sequence, three‐period crossover study was conducted. Various combinations of tegoprazan IR and DR formulations (50, 75 or 100 mg) were administered orally once per period. The 24‐h intragastric pH was monitored before and after each administration. PK blood samples were collected for up to 48 h. PK and PD were compared among treatments. Results: Eighteen healthy Korean subjects completed the study. All treatment groups showed intragastric pH above 4 approximately 1 h following tegoprazan administration. Among the various combinations, the IR and DR combination at a 1:1 ratio induced greater gastric acid suppression (%Time pH ≥ 4) than IR alone in each dose group, both for 24 h (50 mg; 59% vs. 52%, P =.2188, 95% confidence interval [CI] −6.92–22.27, 100 mg; 85% vs. 70%, P <.05, 95% CI 8.92–22.19) and at night (50 mg; 27% vs. 16%, P =.1563, 95% CI −11.79–37.71, 100 mg; 77% vs. 49%, P <.05, 95% CI 16.14–42.98), with similar systemic exposure. Conclusions: The combinatorial tegoprazan in the IR and DR 1:1 ratio formulation was found to induce stronger gastric acid suppression throughout the day and at night, compared to the conventional IR formulation. Indocyanine green (ICG), glucose oxidase (GOx), and copper(II) sulfate (Cu)‐installed hybrid gel based on organic nanorod (cellulose nanocrystal [CNC]) and inorganic nanodisk (Laponite [LAP]) was developed to perform a combination of starvation therapy (ST), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), and photothermal therapy (PTT) for localized cancers. A hybrid CNC/LAP network with a nematic phase was designed to enable instant gelation, controlled viscoelasticity, syringe injectability, and longer in vivo retention. Moreover, ICG was introduced into the CNC/LAP gel system to induce hyperthermia of tumor tissue, amplifying the CDT effect; GOx was used for glucose deprivation (related to the Warburg effect); and Cu was introduced for hydroxyl radical generation (based on Fenton‐like chemistry) and cellular glutathione (GSH) degradation in cancer cells. The ICG/GOx/Cu‐installed CNC/LAP gel in combination with near‐infrared (NIR) laser realized improved antiproliferation, cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, cellular GSH degradation, and apoptosis induction in colorectal cancer (CT‐26) cells. In addition, local injection of the CNC/ICG/GOx/Cu/LAP gel into the implanted CT‐26 tumor while irradiating it with NIR laser provided strong tumor growth suppression effects. Chicken plumage colouration is an important trait related to productivity in poultry industry. Therefore, the genetic basis for pigmentation in chicken plumage is an area of great interest. However, the colour trait is generally regarded as a qualitative trait and representing colour variations is difficult. In this study, we developed a method to quantify and classify colour using an F2 population crossed from two pure lines: White Leghorn and the Korean indigenous breed Yeonsan Ogye. Using red, green, and blue values in the cropped body region, we identified significant genomic regions on chromosomes 33:3 160 480–7 447 197 and Z:78 748 287–79 173 793. Furthermore, we identified two potential candidate genes (PMEL and MTAP) that might have significant effects on melanin‐based plumage pigmentation. Background: Diffuse coronary artery disease (CAD) is a prognostic factor after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and requires multiple overlapping stent implantations. Hypothesis: We investigated the impact of ultra‐long 48 mm drug‐eluting stent (DES) on procedural and clinical outcomes in real‐world practice. Methods: Patients who underwent DES implantation for a lesion length of >40 mm were selected from a prospective registry between 2019 and 2021. Patients treated with one or more ultra‐long 48 mm DES were in the ultra‐long DES group (n = 221). The others comprised the conventional DES group (n = 428). Procedural and clinical outcomes were compared after propensity score matching (PSM). The primary endpoint was a device‐oriented composite outcome (DOCO) consisting of cardiac death, target vessel‐related myocardial infarction, and target lesion revascularization at 1‐year follow‐up. Results: After PSM, 158 matched pairs of patients showed no differences in the baseline clinical and angiographic characteristics. The stent delivery failure rate, the use of guide‐extension catheter or anchor balloon technique, and the procedural success rate were similar for both groups. Approximately two‐thirds of lesions could be treated with one DES in the ultra‐long DES group. At 1‐year follow‐up, the DOCO was similar for both groups (2.5% vs. 0.6%, p =.168). Conclusions: In daily clinical practice, ultra‐long DES implantation is as safe and effective as multiple overlapping conventional DES implants in treating diffuse long CAD. BACKGROUND: Bradysia procera, a ginseng stem fungus gnat, is one of the most serious insect pests of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng), causing significant damage to plant growth. The goal of this study was to determine the toxicity and mechanism of action of phenylpropanoids (trans‐anethole and estragole) isolated from the methanol extract and hydrodistillate of Illicium verum fruit against third‐instar larvae and eggs of Bradysia procera. RESULTS: The filter‐paper mortality bioassay revealed that estragole [median lethal concentration (LC50) = 4.68 g/cm2] has a significant fumigant effect, followed by trans‐anethole (LC50 = 43.92 g/cm2). However, estragole had the lowest toxic effect when compared to commercially available insecticides. After 7 days, estragole and trans‐anethole at 75 g/cm2 inhibited egg hatchability up to 97% and 93%, respectively. At 0.09 g/cm2, insecticides had an inhibitory effect on egg‐hatching ability ranging from 88% to 94%. Furthermore, in both closed and open containers, these active constituents were able to consistently induce vapor‐phased toxicity. Both estragole and trans‐anethole have the ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE), which is involved in neurotransmitter function. However, the active constituent estragole from I. verum fruit acted as a potent AChE inhibitor and had a slightly lower effect on cyclic adenosine monophosphate (AMP) than octopamine alone. CONCLUSION: This finding suggests that estragole may influence Bradysia procera neurotransmitter function via both the AChE and octopaminergic receptors. More research is needed to demonstrate the potential applications of I. verum fruit‐derived products as potential larvicides and ovicides for Bradysia procera population control. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry. Pan I et al i .[11] carried out CGM to evaluate glucose variability and a nerve conduction test to evaluate polyneuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients, and the result showed a positive association between glucose variability and diabetic polyneuropathy. The Korean Diabetes Association suggests using rtCGM in type 1 diabetes mellitus patients and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who require MDI. In addition, in a retrospective observational cohort study, using CGM improved HbA1c and reduced acute complications due to hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia in later-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients[13]. The aim of this study was to find significant genomic regions associated with carcass traits in Hanwoo cattle and to compare the benefit of using additional information from non‐genotyped animals. Imputed whole‐genome sequence data were used along with phenotypic data on 13 715 genotyped animals as well as phenotypes of 440 284 non‐genotyped animals that were offspring of 454 genotyped sires. For carcass weight, 15 083 SNPs in 33 QTL regions and 313 candidate genes were identified. We found 410 SNPs in 17 QTL regions containing 122 candidate genes for back fat thickness. In total, 656 SNPs in 19 QTLs with 137 candidate genes for eye muscle area and 79 SNPs in 12 QTL regions with 77 candidate genes were identified for marbling score. The most important candidate genes included ZFAT, TG, PLAG1, CHCHD7, and TOX for carcass weight and eye muscle area, NOG for back fat thickness, and EVOVL5 for marbling score. This study showed that the use of phenotypic records on non‐genotyped progeny along with imputed whole‐genome sequence data increased the power of detecting new significant genomic regions. Aim: Research on psychotic disorder not otherwise specified (PNOS) that clearly mentions its subgroups is very rare. This study was conducted to identify the demographic and clinical features, cognitive function, and 1‐year outcomes of patients with early stage PNOS compared with those with early stage schizophrenia (SZ). Methods: The study subjects were 54 and 321 patients with PNOS and SZ, respectively, who were registered at least more than 1 year ago. Due to drop out, only 37 and 210 patients with PNOS and SZ were evaluated at the 1‐year follow‐up. We compared clinical variables (duration of untreated psychosis, symptom severity, self‐rating scales, and so on), cognitive function, and short‐term outcomes (treatment response, remission, compliance, drop out, relapse) between the two groups. Results: The patients with PNOS were associated with higher diagnostic stability (53.7%) compared with those in previous studies. They had lower symptom severity, better treatment response at 2 months and higher remission rates at 12 months, but poorer compliance at 6 months compared with patients with SZ. Level of cognitive impairment in PNOS was intermediate between those of SZ patients and healthy controls. Conclusions: These findings indicate that PNOS has unique clinical features, suggesting that it should be treated as a distinct clinical syndrome. At the same time, however, prevention of its possible progression to other psychotic disorders in some patients with PNOS is also important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: In the present study, the prevalence and predictors of symptomatic and full remission were investigated in patients with first‐episode psychosis (FEP) at the 12‐month follow‐up. Methods: A total of 308 participants aged 18–45 years fulfilled the study inclusion criteria and 214 completed the 12‐month follow‐up. Results: At the 12‐month follow‐up, 67.3% (142) and 25.9% (55) of the FEP patients met the criteria for symptomatic and full remission, respectively. Stepwise logistic regression analysis showed a shorter duration of untreated psychosis (DUP), no family history, lower Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) negative symptom scores at baseline and higher familial support predicted symptomatic remission at the 12‐month follow‐up. A higher educational level, shorter DUP, lower PANSS general symptoms scores at baseline and higher subjective well‐being under neuroleptics emotional regulation scores predicted full remission. Conclusions: Our findings regarding the rates of symptomatic and full remission are consistent with previous studies. The results indicate a large discrepancy between symptomatic versus full remission rates at a 12‐month follow‐up in patients with FEP. The genetic improvement of Hanwoo is dependent on the estimated breeding value (EBV) of pedigree‐based Korean proven bull's number, and the genetic evaluation for cows is difficult due to insufficient pedigree and test records. Genomic selection involves utilizing the individual's genotype to estimate the breeding value (BV) and is determined to be an appropriate evaluation method for cows who lack test information. This study used pedigree and genotype to estimate and analyse BV and accuracy of Hanwoo cows in the Gyeongnam area using pedigree best linear unbiased prediction (PBLUP) and genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP). The test group acquired pedigree and genotype of 919 Hanwoo cows in the Gyeongnam area. The traits used for analysis were carcass weight (CWT), eye muscle areas (EMA), backfat thickness (BFT) and marbling score (MS). PBLUP used Reference group 1 containing the pedigree and phenotype of 919 Hanwoo cows and 545,483 heads to construct the numeric relationship matrix and estimated the EBV and accuracy. GBLUP used Reference group 2 containing the genotype and phenotype of 919 Hanwoo cows and 17,226 heads to construct the genomic relationship matrix and estimated the genomic EBV (GEBV) and accuracy. In the order of CWT, EMA, BFT and MS, the accuracy of PBLUP was 0.488, 0.480, 0.482 and 0.486 while the accuracy of GBLUP was higher with 0.779, 0.758, 0.766 and 0.791. And for 104 cows without relationship coefficient on pedigree to the reference group, the accuracy as PBLUP was estimated to be 0, but for GBLUP, it was possible to estimate the accuracy for all individuals. If GBLUP is applied to cows raised in general farms, the genetic evaluation can be performed even on animals without pedigree and high‐accuracy estimation, enabling selection of excellent cows. Accordingly, by securing the genetic diversity of cows, it is expected to increase the profitability of farms by decreasing the inbreeding rate and increasing efficiency of elite calf production. Introduction: Vortioxetine has a positive effect on cognitive function in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). This study aimed to examine the changes in cognitive function and EEG (spectral power and mismatch negativity (MMN)) in patients with MDD pre‐ and postvortioxetine treatment. Methods: Thirty patients with MDD were included in the study. They were given vortioxetine (10‐20mg po per day) for eight weeks. Depression and anxiety severities, social function (Korean version of the social adjustment scale (K‐SAS)), and cognitive function (digit‐symbol substitution Test (DSST), Korean version of the attentional control questionnaire (K‐ACQ), and Korean version of the perceived deficits questionnaire for depression (K‐PDQD)) were evaluated. Spectral power of EEG and MMN was also measured pre‐ and postvortioxetine treatment. Results: Depression and anxiety severity, social function, and cognitive functioning significantly improved after vortioxetine treatment. Also, there was a significant decrease in the right central delta band and an increase in the right central beta 2 band following vortioxetine treatment. The changes in EEG spectral power were not related to changes in cognitive functions. Baseline MMN significantly predicted changes in DSST score after controlling for the baseline clinical variables. Conclusion: Vortioxetine treatment improved cognitive function and induced changes in EEG (decreased theta power and increased beta power) in patients with MDD. Type 1 innate lymphoid cells (ILC1) are tissue‐resident lymphocytes that provide early protection against bacterial and viral infections. Discrete transcriptional states of ILC1 have been identified in homeostatic and pathological contexts. However, whether these states delineate ILC1 with different functional properties is not completely understood. Here, we show that liver ILC1 are heterogeneous for the expression of distinct effector molecules and surface receptors, including granzyme A (GzmA) and CD160, in mice. ILC1 expressing high levels of GzmA are enriched in the liver of adult mice, and represent the main hepatic ILC1 population at birth. However, the heterogeneity of GzmA and CD160 expression in hepatic ILC1 begins perinatally and increases with age. GzmA+ ILC1 differ from NK cells for the limited homeostatic requirements of JAK/STAT signals and the transcription factor Nfil3. Moreover, by employing Rorc(γt)‐fate map (fm) reporter mice, we established that ILC3‐ILC1 plasticity contributes to delineate the heterogeneity of liver ILC1, with RORγt‐fm+ cells skewed toward a GzmA–CD160+ phenotype. Finally, we showed that ILC1 defined by the expression of GzmA and CD160 are characterized by graded cytotoxic potential and ability to produce IFN‐γ. Aims/Introduction: Increased blood glucose or increased weight is often observed in patients who are prescribed sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i). The aim of this study was to determine in advance which patients, among those prescribed a SGLT2i, would be likely to have improved or worsened blood glucose levels and gain or loss of weight through the use of real‐world data‐based prescriptions. Materials and Methods: After 3 months of dapagliflozin prescription, patients were divided into four groups: H(+)W(+) for improved glucose and weight loss; H(+)W(−) for improved blood glucose and weight gain; H(−)W(+) for worsened glucose and weight loss; and H(−)W(−) for worsened glucose and weight gain. Results: The proportion of patients in the H(+)W(+) group was 53.5% (325/608 patients), H(+)W(−) was 19.7% (120/608), H(−)W(+) was 26.8% (114/608) and H(−)W(−) was 8.1% (49/608). The odds of proceeding to H(+)W(−) compared with H(+)W(+), which served as the reference, were 144% in baseline hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) 7.0–8.0%, 233% in baseline HbA1c 8.0–9.0% and 359% in baseline HbA1c ≥ 9.0% (odds ratio 3.59, P < 0.05) compared with the reference. The odds of proceeding to H(−)W(+) were 29, 13 and 8%, respectively (all P < 0.05), and to H(−)W(−) were 17, 15 and 8%, respectively (all P < 0.05), compared with the reference. The results were expected to vary individually, because changes in blood glucose and bodyweight are more affected by diet and exercise than by drugs. Conclusions: When first prescribing dapagliflozin, a physician should be aware of the weight gain rather than glucose change if the baseline HbA1c is high, and might concentrate on weight‐related lifestyle training, such as diet and exercise. Summary: Faecalibacterium prausnitzii is a dominant member of healthy human colon microbiota, regarded as a beneficial gut bacterium due to its ability to produce anti‐inflammatory substances. However, little is known about how F. prausnitzii utilizes the nutrients present in the human gut, influencing its prevalence in the host intestinal environment. The phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP):carbohydrate phosphotransferase system (PTS) is a widely distributed and highly efficient carbohydrate transport system found in most bacterial species that catalyses the simultaneous phosphorylation and import of cognate carbohydrates; its components play physiological roles through interaction with other regulatory proteins. Here, we performed a systematic analysis of the 16 genes encoding putative PTS components (2 enzyme I, 2 HPr, and 12 enzyme II components) in F. prausnitzii A2‐165. We identified the general PTS components responsible for the PEP‐dependent phosphotransfer reaction and the sugar‐specific PTS components involved in the transport of two carbohydrates, N‐acetylglucosamine and fructose, among five enzyme II complexes. Hepatic steatosis, also known as fatty liver disease, occurs due to abnormal lipid accumulation in the liver. It has been known that gut absorption also plays an important role in the mechanism underlying hepatic steatosis. Conventional in vitro cell culture models have limitations in recapitulating the mechanisms of hepatic steatosis because it does not include the gut absorption process. Previously, we reported development of a microfluidic gut–liver chip that can recapitulate the gut absorption of fatty acids and subsequent lipid accumulation in liver cells. In this study, we performed a series of experiments to verify that our gut–liver chip reproduces various aspects of hepatic steatosis. The absorption of fatty acids was evaluated under various culture conditions. The anti‐steatotic effect of turofexorate isopropyl (XL‐335) and metformin was tested, and both drugs showed different action mechanisms. In addition, the oxidative stress induced by lipid absorption was evaluated. Memristors have emerged as transformative devices to enable neuromorphic and in‐memory computing, where success requires the identification and development of materials that can overcome challenges in retention and device variability. Here, high‐entropy oxide composed of Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, Mo, and W oxides is first demonstrated as a switching material for valence change memory. This multielement oxide material provides uniform distribution and higher concentration of oxygen vacancies, limiting the stochastic behavior in resistive switching. (Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, Mo, W) high‐entropy‐oxide‐based memristors manifest the "cocktail effect," exhibiting comparable retention with HfO2‐ or Ta2O5‐based memristors while also demonstrating the gradual conductance modulation observed in WO3‐based memristors. The electrical characterization of these high‐entropy‐oxide‐based memristors demonstrates forming‐free operation, low device and cycle variability, gradual conductance modulation, 6‐bit operation, and long retention which are promising for neuromorphic applications. Background: Although depression is very common in patients with Parkinson disease (PD), only a few studies have investigated the longitudinal effects of initial depression on cognitive decline in these patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of depression on cognitive functions in patients with PD. Methods: We used data from the Parkinson Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) to investigate the relationship between depression and PD. Depressive symptoms were measured in patients with PD based on the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) or Neuropsychiatric Inventory‐Questionnaire (NPI‐Q) scores obtained at baseline. We evaluated cognitive decline as whether a patient with PD progressed to PD with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) during a 4‐year follow‐up period. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was done to know whether depression can predict the conversion to MCI. In addition, a voxel‐based morphometric analysis using volumetric brain magnetic resonance imaging was used to compare structural changes related to future cognitive decline as well as to reveal longitudinal effect of baseline depression on cortical atrophy. Results: Data from 263 patients with cognitively normal de novo PD who were available for longitudinal cognitive testing were analysed. The multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that the depressive symptoms were independent risk factors for conversion to MCI in patients with de novo PD after adjusting for covariates (hazards ratio (95% CI)) of depression defined by the GDS (1.753 (1.084–2.835)) and the NPI (1.815 (1.083–3.042)) scores, respectively. The significant structural changes in PD with MCI as well as longitudinal effect of baseline depression on subsequent cortical atrophy were found in multiple areas on the voxel‐based morphometric analysis (P < 0.001, family‐wise error rate corrected). Conclusions: Our study indicates that the presence of depressive symptoms in patients with early PD is associated with a higher risk of progression to MCI and early depression may reflect subsequent cortical atrophy. This letter addresses a new range‐only measurement‐based glass line feature extraction method, which allows a low‐cost light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor to detect glass‐like objects without intensity and multi‐echo data. The principle that the emitted LiDAR ray incidence angle with respect to a glass surface is close to 0° is concerned. The geometric relationship between the sensor and glass objects is also considered for successful glass feature extraction. The extracted features are accumulated and reformulated for the generation of glass line features using the RANdom SAmple Consensus algorithm (RANSAC). Two experiments with different robot paths were conducted in a glass environment. Each angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) asserts independent molecular effects. No study has compared the renoprotective potency of different types of ARBs in Korea. This study evaluated the differences among medications for treating albuminuria. Data were obtained from electronic medical records of adult patients who underwent albuminuria test and received treatment with either angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or ARBs between January 2009 and June 2016. Patients' albuminuria and renal function data were observed for three months after treatment initiation. In total, 1475 patients were included. Patients treated with ACEIs had no significant changes in albuminuria (from 127.7 ± 55.1 mg/g to 46.7 ± 18.7 mg/g, P =.127), but those treated with ARBs showed significant improvement (from 491.2 ± 33.2 mg/g to 372.0 ± 28.0 mg/g, P <.001). The ARB group had significantly more patients with normal albuminuria after treatment (from 55.8% to 59.3% for normal albuminuria, from 16.7% to 18.5% for moderately increased albuminuria and from 27.5% to 22.2% for severely increased albuminuria, P =.005), but renal function did not change significantly. Subgroup analysis of ARB types showed that candesartan (from 712.5 ± 71.1 to 489.8 ± 57.8 mg/g, P <.001) and irbesartan (from 522.6 ± 65.7 to 352.6 ± 54.3 mg/g, P <.001) had significant effects. Candesartan improved albuminuria in patients older than 60 years (from 506.9 ± 84.2 to 371.9 ± 70.6 mg/g, P =.004) and irbesartan improved albuminuria in patients with glomerular filtration rate <60 (from 551.6 ± 100.0 to 392.4 ± 76.2, P =.007). Only irbesartan and candesartan could reduce albuminuria, suggesting that all ARBs do not have the same outcome. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical implications of diabetes for the management of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL).Study Design: Retrospective study.Setting: Tertiary referral center.Subjects and Methods: ISSNHL patients (N = 403) who received inpatient management between January 2015 and December 2018 were analyzed. All were managed by a uniform treatment protocol of high-dose steroid therapy and salvage intratympanic steroid injections. Treatment results were evaluated according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery's criteria 3 months after the start of treatment. We compared the clinical parameters and treatment outcomes of ISSNHL with and without diabetes. We also evaluated the influence of diabetes on the prognosis of ISSNHL by propensity score matching.Results: Overall, of the 403 ISSNHL patients, 94 (23.3%) had diabetes, and 11 were newly diagnosed with diabetes. The patients with diabetes were older than those without diabetes (P < .001), and their initial hearing threshold was significantly higher (P < .001). The diabetic patients were hospitalized for a longer period, and their hearing recovery rate was lower. However, when age, sex, and initial hearing level were adjusted by propensity score matching, the diabetic patients and matched controls yielded similar treatment results.Conclusions: ISSNHL with diabetes usually presents with severe hearing loss and requires longer hospitalization. Aim: This study investigated the clinical characteristics and psychosocial factors associated with depression in patients with early psychosis according to stage of illness. Methods: The present study includes patients who fulfil the DSM‐5 criteria for schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders. Patients were divided into two groups according to illness stage (the acute stage of first‐episode psychosis and stabilization phase of recent‐onset psychosis). Clinically meaningful depression was defined as moderate or severe on the depression dimension of the Clinician‐Rated Dimensions of Psychosis Symptom Severity scale in the DSM‐5. Results: In total, 340 (207 first‐episode and 133 recent‐onset) patients were recruited in this study. Patients with comorbid depression were characterized by frequent suicidal ideation, a past suicide attempt, and lower scores on the Subjective Well‐being Under Neuroleptics and Brief Resilience Scale in both groups. Long duration of untreated psychosis and higher scores on the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report were associated with depression in the acute stage of first‐episode psychosis. In the stabilization phase of recent‐onset psychosis group, a monthly income and scores for sexual desire and on the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale‐III were significantly lower in patients with depression than in those without depression. Conclusion: Comorbid depression was associated with high suicidality, lower quality of life and poor resilience in patients with first‐episode and recent‐onset psychosis. Depression was associated with factors that had been present before the initiation of treatment in patients with first‐episode psychosis and with environmental factors in those in the stabilization phase. Objective: To analyze the association between neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP) in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Methods: Two hundred and fifty men aged >50 years who presented with lower urinary tract symptoms at our institution between 2014 and 2018 were analyzed. Pearson's method was used for analysis of the correlation between NLR and IPP. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of IPP. Further analysis according to total prostate volume (TPV) was performed. Results: The NLR correlated positively with IPP (Pearson's r = 0.459, P < 0.001) and was an independent predictor of IPP ≥10 mm (odds ratio, 2.95; 95% confidence interval, 1.59–5.47; P = 0.0006). Among the 142 men with prostates <40 cm3, mean NLR was 2.50 ± 0.71 in those with IPP ≥10 mm and 1.71 ± 0.57 in those with IPP < 10 mm (P < 0.001). The NLR differed significantly between those with a prostate <40 cm3 and IPP ≥10 mm and those with a larger prostate and IPP < 10 mm (2.50 ± 0.71 vs 2.07 ± 0.77, respectively; P = 0.020). Conclusions: NLR can be used as a surrogate marker for presence of IPP. Its clinical value would be especially important in men with a small prostate gland but high IPP. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of poloxamer‐based thermo‐sensitive sol–gel instillation, after transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), for preventing urethral stricture. Patients and Methods: In all, 198 patients underwent TURP for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Recruited patients were randomly divided into two groups: groups A and B. Patients in Group A (100 patients, experimental group) received poloxamer‐based thermo‐sensitive sol–gel instillation and patients in the Group B (98 patients, control group) received lubricant instillation after TURP. Each patient was evaluated at 4 (V1), 12 (V2), and 24 weeks (V3) after TURP. The effectiveness of poloxamer‐based thermo‐sensitive sol–gel instillation was evaluated based on the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), IPSS‐Quality of Life (QoL), Overactive bladder questionnaire (OAB‐q), maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax), post‐void residual urine volume (PVR), and cystoscopy. Results: Amongst the initial 198 participants, 80 patients in Group A and 83 in Group B completed the study. There were no significant differences in IPSS‐QoL and OAB‐q between the groups. However, Qmax was significantly different between groups A and B, at a mean (SD) of 18.92 (9.98) vs 15.58 (9.24) mL/s (P = 0.028) at 24 weeks after TURP. On cystoscopic examination, urethral stricture after TURP was found in two of the 80 patients in Group A and 10 of 83 in Group B (P = 0.023). Although in vitro models are widely accepted experimental platforms, their physiological relevance is often severely limited. The limitation of current in vitro models is strongly manifested in case of diseases where multiple organs are involved, such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Microphysiological systems (MPS), also known as organ‐on‐a‐chip technology, enable a closer approximation of the human organs and tissues, by recreating the tissue microenvironment. Multiorgan MPS, also known as multiorgan‐on‐a‐chip or body‐on‐a‐chip, offer the possibility of reproducing interactions between organs by connecting different organ modules. Here, we designed a three‐organ MPS consisting of pancreas, muscle, and liver, to recapitulate glucose metabolism and homeostasis by constructing a mathematical model of glucose metabolism, based on experimental measurement of glucose uptake by muscle cells and insulin secretion by pancreas cells. A mathematical model was used to modify the MPS to improve the physiological relevance, and by adding the liver model in the mathematical model, physiological realistic glucose and insulin profiles were obtained. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical significance of 4‐hour delayed‐enhanced 3.0 Tesla (3T) 3D‐fluid‐attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MR imaging in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). Study design: Case series with comparisons. Setting: Tertiary referral centre. Participants: Eighty‐seven idiopathic SSNHL patients were enrolled between January 2015 and December 2016 and received high dose steroid therapy and intratympanic steroid injections as salvage treatment. Intervention: Pre‐contrast, 10‐minute and 4‐hour delayed‐enhanced 3D‐FLAIR MR images were obtained using double‐dose IV gadolinium. Main outcome measures: The results of treatment were evaluated according to Siegel's criteria 3 months after the start of treatment. Where possible lesion‐side laterality of the inner ear was identified based on the MR images, the associations between MR findings and other clinical parameters were analysed, and the relationships between hearing recovery and MR image findings were assessed. Results: Lesion‐side laterality was identified on MRI in 52 (59.7%), 18 (20.1%) and 8 (9.2%) patients, based on 4‐hour delayed, 10‐minute delayed, and pre‐contrast images, respectively. The hearing recovery rate was significantly lower in the patients with lesion‐side laterality on 4‐hour delayed images (P < 0.001). In a multivariate analysis, lesion‐side laterality on 4‐hour delayed images was associated with poor prognosis (OR = 5.6) after adjusting other prognostic factors including initial hearing level, lesion‐side laterality on 10‐min delayed images and presence of vertigo. In addition, as the extent of enhancement in the inner ear increased the probability of hearing recover decreased (P = 0.001). Conclusions: Contrast enhancement of inner ear structures can be seen on 4‐hour delayed‐enhanced 3T 3D‐FLAIR MR images in idiopathic SSNHL. Aims: Electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha activity during resting state reflects the 'readiness' of an individual to respond to the environment; this includes the performance of cognitive processes. Alpha activity is reported to be attenuated in schizophrenia (SCZ). Understanding the interaction between alpha activity during rest and when cognitively engaged may provide insights into the neural circuitry, which is dysfunctional in SCZ. This study investigated the changes of alpha activity between resting state and cognitive engagement in SCZ patients. Methods: Thirty‐four SCZ patients and 29 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. EEG was performed in the resting state and during an auditory P300 task. All experimental procedures followed the relevant institutional guidelines and regulations. Results: In SCZ, high‐frequency alpha activity was reduced in the resting state. High‐frequency alpha source density was decreased in both the resting‐state and a P300 task condition in patients, compared to HC. HC, but not SCZ patients, showed a reduction in high‐frequency alpha source density during the P300 task compared to the resting state. The negative correlation between high‐frequency alpha source density in the resting state and positive symptoms was significant. Conclusions: High‐frequency alpha activity in SCZ patients and its unsuccessful reduction during cognitive processing may be biological markers of SCZ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitor‐related angioedema is well known, angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB)‐related angioedema has not been extensively studied because of its lower incidence. Therefore, ARB‐related angioedema is likely to be overlooked in the clinical setting. We analysed the medical records of adults who had been prescribed ARB and diagnosed with angioedema between 2009 and 2015. All adults over the age of 18 years who were initially administered ARB between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2015 were selected as participants in this study. To confirm whether the angioedema was actually due to the administration of ARB, we conducted a chart review. A total of 35 584 patients were prescribed ARB for the first time when visiting the Seoul St. Mary's Hospital during the study period. Twenty‐four patients diagnosed with angioedema for other reasons prior to their first prescription of ARB were excluded from this study. ARB‐related angioedema was suspected in six of 35 560 patients (0.02%) who were initially prescribed ARB during the study period. The manifestation of ARB‐related angioedema ranged from several days (1/6 case) to several years (3/6 cases). Some patients continued taking ARB with intermittent antihistamine or steroid therapy. In such cases, angioedema symptoms improved but did not completely resolve. Its diagnosis can be delayed and the symptoms may be recurrent as symptoms improve with antihistamine use. In some cases, the same person had different reactions depending on the type of ARB. Definitively diagnosing ARB‐related angioedema is difficult, and physicians often overlook angioedema without suspecting that it is an adverse effect of ARB. Experience‐dependent synapse remodeling is associated with information storage in the nervous system. Neuronal synapses show alteration in various neurological and cognitive disorders in their structure and function. At the ultrastructural level, parallel fiber boutons contacting multiple spines of Purkinje cells in the cerebellar cortex are commonly observed in physiologically enriched animals as well as pathological ataxic mutants. However, the dendritic origin of those spines on parallel fiber multiple‐synapse boutons (MSBs) has been poorly understood. Here, we investigated this issue by 3‐dimensional ultrastructural analysis to determine synaptic connectivity of MSBs in both mice housed in physically enriched environment and cerebellar ataxic mutants. Our results demonstrated that environmental enrichment selectively induced MSBs to contact spines from the same parent dendrite, indicating focal strengthening of synapse through the simultaneous activation of two adjacent spines. In contrast, ataxic mutants displaying impaired motor coordination had significantly more MSBs involving spines originating from different neighboring dendrites compared to both wild‐type and environmentally enriched animals, suggesting that compromising multiple synapse formation may lead to abnormal motor behavior in the mutant mice. These findings propose that environmental stimulation in normal animals mainly involves the refinement of preexisting synaptic networks, whereas pathological ataxic conditions may results from less‐selective but compromising multiple synaptic formation. This study underscores that different types of multiple synapse boutons may have disparate effects on cerebellar synaptic transmission. Multiple‐synapse boutons (MSB) are observed in the cerebellum of both environmentally enriched (EE) and tottering ataxic mutant mice. Objectives: We investigated the effect of daily climatic parameters on spontaneous acute urinary retention (sAUR) and evaluated the risk factors for refractory/recurrent AUR. Methods: A total of 4194 patients older than 40 years were diagnosed with AUR in the emergency department at Gangnam Severance Hospital, Seoul, from January 2007 to May 2016. To evaluate climatic parameters at sAUR onset, we included individuals living in the area around the hospital. We excluded patients with fever, who did not return to the hospital after the AUR episode or with AUR occurring within 2 weeks following admission for surgery or chemotherapy. Results: Among 818 patients living in the two districts around the hospital, winter and October had the highest seasonal and monthly rates of sAUR development, respectively, and sAUR incidence increased with age. Daily temperature range and mean wind speed were significant risk factors for sAUR development. Several daily climatic parameters had seasonal effects on sAUR incidence. Over a mean follow‐up of 0.98 years, 122 patients (14.9%) developed refractory/recurrent AUR. Transitional zone index (TZI; HR = 1.03; P = 0.002) and prostate‐specific antigen (PSA) at the time of sAUR (HR = 1.01; P = 0.030) were significant predictors of refractory/recurrent AUR. Benign prostate hyperplasia medication and transurethral prostatectomy after sAUR were not risk factors for refractory/recurrent AUR. Objective: To investigate the clinical significance of 4-hour delayed-enhanced 3.0 Tesla three-dimensional (3D) fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in acute vestibular neuritis.Study Design: A prospective observational study.Methods: Twenty-nine vestibular neuritis patients were enrolled between January 2017 and June 2017. Vestibular function tests, comprising the caloric and video head impulse tests and vestibular-evoked myogenic potential measurements, were performed. Precontrast, 10-minute, and 4-hour delayed-enhanced 3D-FLAIR MR images using double-dose IV gadolinium were obtained. After laterality and extent of inner ear enhancement were defined, the patients were divided into groups based on the patterns of enhancement, and clinical parameters were analyzed according to the groups.Results: Twenty patients (20 of 29, 69.0%) had obviously asymmetric enhancement of the affected inner ear structures on 4-hour delayed images, whereas only three patients (10.3%) had marked enhancement on 10-minute delayed images. The duration of spontaneous nystagmus (DurSN) was significantly longer in the patients with enhancement, especially with enhancement of the whole inner ear, including the vestibule and semicircular canals (P < 0.033). Spontaneous nystagmus resolved within 12 days in patients without laterality of enhancement, and within 16 days in ipsilesional enhancement confined to the inner auditory canal and fundus. Other results of vestibular function tests did not reveal any significant associations with MR enhancement.Conclusions: Contrast enhancement of the vestibular nerve and inner ear structures can be identified on 4-hour delayed-enhanced 3T 3D-FLAIR MR images in acute vestibular neuritis. Aim The Sewol ferry capsizing accident on South Korea's southern coast resulted in the death of 304 people, and serious bereavement problems for their families. Electroencephalography (EEG) beta frequency is associated with psychiatric symptoms, such as insomnia. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between frontal beta power, psychological symptoms, and insomnia in the bereaved families. Methods Eighty-four family members of the Sewol ferry victims (32 men and 52 women) were recruited and their EEG was compared with that of 25 (13 men and 12 women) healthy controls. A two-channel EEG device was used to measure cortical activity in the frontal lobe. Symptom severity of insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, complicated grief, and anxiety were evaluated. Results The bereaved families showed a higher frontal beta power than healthy controls. Subgroup analysis showed that frontal beta power was lower in the individuals with severe insomnia than in those with normal sleep. There was a significant inverse correlation between frontal beta power and insomnia symptom in the bereaved families. Conclusion This study suggests that increased beta power, reflecting the psychopathology in the bereaved families of the Sewol ferry disaster, may be a compensatory mechanism that follows complex trauma. Frontal beta power could be a potential marker indicating the severity of sleep disturbances. Our results suggest that sleep disturbance is an important symptom in family members of the Sewol ferry disaster's victims, which may be screened by EEG beta power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
