Rationale: The stable isotope compositions of atmospheric CO2 can provide useful insight into various geochemical processes and carbon cycles on Earth, which is critical for understanding of Earth's changing climate. Here, we present a simple and cost‐effective analytical method for the collection and measurement of carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of atmospheric CO2. Methods: Air samples of ~150 mL were collected individually or collectively using our simple active air collection system and then extracted on a vacuum purification line to remove noncondensable gases and atmospheric water vapor. The efficiency of removing atmospheric water vapor was tested by using a magnesium perchlorate desiccant trap and a dry ice/ethanol trap. Lastly, a "J‐Cut tube sealing/cracking method" was developed to store and transfer purified atmospheric CO2 to the GasBench II and CF‐IRMS system for δ13C and δ18O measurements. Results: The collective active air collection method combined with the full sample air extraction method for a 3‐min transfer time or "Full 3m TE" yields the best analytical precision of 0.07‰ (δ13C) and 0.04‰ (δ18O). Removing atmospheric water vapor from air samples is not necessary for δ13C, but essential for δ18O measurements. The J‐Cut tube sealing/cracking method shows a near 100% effectiveness for the storage and transfer of atmospheric or any CO2. Conclusions: A simple and cost‐effect method was developed for the collection, purification, storage, and isotopic analysis of indoor/outdoor atmospheric CO2 samples for general users. This method utilizes a popular headspace gas sample preparation system for CF‐IRMS and an easy‐to‐build vacuum purification line without involving complex and high‐cost devices for the preparation of atmospheric CO2. Summary: Owing to the exponential increase in wireless network services and bandwidth requirements, sharing the radio spectrum among multiple network operators seems inevitable. In wireless networks, enabling efficient spectrum sharing for resource allocation is quite challenging due to several random factors, especially in multi‐operator spectrum sharing. While spectrum sensing can be useful in spectrum‐sharing networks, the chance of collision exists due to the inherent unreliability of wireless networks, making operators reluctant to use sensing‐based mechanisms for spectrum sharing. To circumvent these issues, we utilize an alternative approach, whereby we propose an efficient spectrum‐sharing mechanism leveraging a spectrum coordinator (SC) in a multi‐operator spectrum‐sharing scenario assisted by deep learning (DL). In our proposed scheme, before the beginning of each timeslot, the base station of each operator transmits the number of required resources based on the number of packets in the base station's queue to SC. In addition, base stations also transmit the list of available channels to SC. After gathering information from all base stations, SC distributes this collected information to all the base stations. Each base station then utilizes the DL‐based spectrum‐sharing algorithm and computes the number of resources it can use based on the number of packets in its queue and the number of packets in the queues of other operators. Furthermore, by leveraging DL, each operator also computes the cost it must pay to other operators for using their resources. We evaluate the performance of the proposed network through extensive simulations. It is shown that the proposed DL‐based spectrum‐sharing mechanism outperforms the conventional spectrum allocation scheme, thus paving the way for more dynamic and efficient multi‐operator spectrum sharing. Exacerbation of scarring can originate from a minority fibroblast population that has undergone inflammatory-mediated genetic changes within the wound microenvironment. The fundamental relationship between molecular and spatial organization of the repair process at the single-cell level remains unclear. We have developed a novel, high-resolution spatial multiomics method that integrates spatial transcriptomics with scRNA-Seq; we identified new characteristic features of cell–cell communication and signaling during the repair process. Data from PU.1-/- mice, which lack an inflammatory response, combined with scRNA-Seq and Visium transcriptomics, led to the identification of nine genes potentially involved in inflammation-related scarring, including integrin beta-like 1 (Itgbl1). Transgenic mouse experiments confirmed that Itgbl1-expressing fibroblasts are required for granulation tissue formation and drive fibrogenesis during skin repair. Additionally, we detected a minority population of Acta2high-expressing myofibroblasts with apparent involvement in scarring, in conjunction with Itgbl1 expression. IL1β signaling inhibited Itgbl1 expression in TGFβ1-treated primary fibroblasts from humans and mice. Our novel methodology reveal molecular mechanisms underlying fibroblast–inflammatory cell interactions that initiate wound scarring. Camelina sativa is regarded as a low‐input oilseed crop for versatile food, biofuels and industrial applications with potential production on marginal lands, whereas phosphate (Pi) deficiency greatly reduces camelina seed production. To improve camelina resilience to low P conditions, here we overexpressed the Pi deficiency–induced non‐specific phospholipase C4 (NPC4) to test its effect on camelina seed production under different levels of Pi availability. NPC4–overexpressing (OE) plants displayed increased seed yield and oil production, with a greater magnitude of increases under Pi‐deficient than Pi‐sufficient conditions. NPC4‐OE camelina had a higher level of total P and free Pi in young leaves but a lower level in old leaves than in wild‐type plants. More Pi was moved from old leaves to young leaves in NPC4‐OE than in wild‐type plants. NPC4‐OE increased the expression of Pi transporter genes, and the increase was greater in old leaves and under Pi‐deficient conditions. These data indicate that NPC4 improves camelina growth by promoting Pi remobilization from old to young tissues, revealing a mechanism by which NPC4 mediates plant response to Pi deficiency. Summary statement: Phosphate (Pi) is a major macronutrient limiting crop production. Aims: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of add‐on dapagliflozin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) who had inadequate glycaemic control with metformin and linagliptin. Materials and Methods: A total of 235 patients with inadequate response to metformin (≥1000 mg/day) plus linagliptin (5 mg/day) were randomized to receive either dapagliflozin/linagliptin fixed‐dose combination (FDC [AJU‐A51]) 10/5 mg/day (n = 117) or linagliptin 5 mg plus placebo (n = 118) for 24 weeks. After the main treatment period, patients who received linagliptin plus placebo were treated with AJU‐A51 for an additional 28 weeks. Change in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) from baseline to Week 24 was the primary endpoint. Results: AJU‐A51 significantly reduced HbA1c levels (from 7.93% ± 0.82% to 7.11% ± 0.61%) compared with linagliptin plus placebo (from 7.80% ± 0.71% to 7.87% ± 0.94%), with a least squares mean difference of −0.88% (95% confidence interval −1.07 to −0.68; p < 0.0001) at 24 weeks. The AJU‐A51 group had a significantly higher proportion of patients who achieved HbA1c <7.0% at Week 24 than the control group (44.8% vs. 18.6%; p < 0.001). The AJU‐A51 group maintained glycaemic efficacy up to 52 weeks, whereas the control group showed a substantial reduction in HbA1c after switching to AJU‐A51 in the extension study period. Both groups had similar incidence of treatment‐emergent and serious adverse events, and no cases of symptomatic hypoglycaemia were reported. Conclusions: Dapagliflozin and linagliptin FDC (AJU‐A51) showed potent glucose‐lowering effects, with good tolerability, in patients with T2D who had poor glycaemic control on metformin and linagliptin (ClinicalTrials.gov [NCT06329674]). MnO2 nanowires coated with conjugated microporous polymers (CMP) are applied as triboelectric energy harvesting materials. The tribopositive performance of the CMP shells is enhanced with the assistance of MnO2 nanowires (MnO2 NW), likely due to cationic charge transfer from the tribopositive CMP layers to the surface Mn2+ and Mn3+ species of MnO2 NW. This is supported by model studies. The MnO2@CMP‐2 with sub‐10 nm thick CMP layers shows promising triboelectric output voltages up to 576 V and a maximum power density of 1.31 mW cm−2. Metallic Sn (Tin) is a promising anode material for Na‐ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity of 870 mAh g−1. However, its large volumetric changes, interfacial instability, and sluggish sodiation kinetics limit its practical applications. Herein, a hierarchical yolk–shell nanohybrid composed of an Sn yolk and a Carbon/Silicon oxycarbide (C/SiOC) bilayer shell is prepared via the simple pyrolysis of a silicone oil dispersion containing an Sn precursor. The multifunctional bilayer helps boost sodiation kinetics by providing conductive pathways, enhancing the reversible capacity through surface capacitive reactions, and stabilizing the electrode/electrolyte interface. Abundant void interspaces inside the yolk–shell structure accommodate large volume changes of the Sn yolk. The Sn@C/SiOC nanohybrid demonstrates high specific capacity (≈500 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1), remarkable rate performance up to 10 A g−1, and ultrastable cyclability (91.1% retention after 1500 cycles at 5 A g−1). Summary: The role of imatinib in PDGFRA/B‐negative hypereosinophilic syndromes (HES) is controversial because of the heterogeneity of HES and the scarcity of prospective studies. We conducted a phase II clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of imatinib in PDGFRA/B‐negative HES. Thirty‐two patients were treated with imatinib (100–400 mg daily), and the molecular basis of their response was identified using whole‐exome sequencing (WES) and whole‐transcriptome sequencing (WTS). The haematological response rate was 46.9%, with a complete haematological response (CHR) rate of 18.8%. The median time to response was 1.5 months. Among the six patients who achieved CHR, five maintained it until the 24th cycle of imatinib and one lost response after 20 months. The median progression‐free survival was 4.3 months. WES and WTS were conducted for 11 patients. The number of non‐silent mutations did not differ between responders and non‐responders. Nine differentially expressed genes, including SNORD15A, were downregulated in responders. STAT5B::RARA, PAK2::PIGX, and FIP1L1::CHIC2 fusions were identified in patients with sustained responses, and RNF130::BRAF and WNK1::KDM5A fusions were identified in non‐responders. The study "Gut permeability and its correlation with patient's traits and blood inflammatory markers in severe asthma: Real-world assessment from the Korean severe asthma registry-2 (KoSAR-2)" explores the relationship between gut permeability and severe asthma. The research found that patients with severe asthma exhibited increased gut permeability compared to non-asthma controls. Atopy was identified as the most significant patient trait influencing gut permeability in severe asthma, with elevated calprotectin levels associated with increased gut permeability in allergic severe asthma patients. Aqueous Aluminum‐air batteries (AABs) hold promise for advancing high‐energy density storage systems in future technologies. However, their widespread practical deployment is limited by the inherent hydrogen side reactions in Aluminum (Al) and incomplete cathodic reactions. To address these challenges, the Al‐sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) system is introduced as an alternative to traditional AABs. Utilizing Na2S2O8 allows to simultaneously achieve three critical objectives, namely, eliminating the need for a cathode catalyst, increasing the system voltage from 1.4 to 2 V, and reducing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Three distinct configurations of the Aluminum electrochemical energy system (Al‐EES) using Na2S2O8: static, flow, and gel are developed. The static configuration demonstrates a performance 1.7 times superior to that of traditional AABs. The flow configuration of Al‐EES achieves a discharge duration of 77 h, which is three to four times longer than that of AABs and exhibits an energy density of 2,650 Wh kgAl−1. With the development of electronic devices and wireless communication technology, the quality of human life has improved. However, shielding from electromagnetic interference (EMI) is required due to device malfunctions and harmful effects on human health. Polymer‐based shielding materials getting much attention due to their light weight, flexibility, good processability, and other desirable traits. However, achieving consistent dispersion of conductive fillers and optimizing the balance between electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties remain challenges despite the advantages of polymer‐based materials. Especially, epoxy resins are promising polymer materials for EMI shielding applications due to their excellent mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and excellent adhesive properties. Additionally, epoxy resin exhibits remarkable processability allowing for various fabrication techniques such as casting, molding, and three‐dimensional printing. However, one of the significant drawbacks of epoxy resin is the difficulty in achieving uniform dispersion of conductive fillers within the epoxy matrix. In this study, we propose an iron‐nickel alloy (FeNi) embedded in an epoxy matrix (FeNi/Epoxy) for EMI shielding material. It is manufactured by facile fabrication process due to the advantages of epoxy, which has excellent processability. EMI shielding effectiveness at 12 GHz is enhanced from 9.12 to 17.86 dB by the increase of FeNi concentrations. Furthermore, thermal and mechanical properties were improved by the increase of FeNi concentration. Thermal conductivity for efficient heat dissipation is increased from 0.63 to 1.49 Wm−1 K−1. Moreover, polydopamine (PDA) was employed as a surface coating material for FeNi to overcome the non‐uniform dispersion of FeNi particles in the epoxy matrix. Surface coating by PDA significantly enhanced the dispersion uniformity and strengthened the adhesion between the filler and matrix. Elastic modulus is greatly increased from 83.03 MPa to 1.29 GPa by the surface coating. The enhancement of mechanical properties is derived from the chemical bonds between the filler and matrix. Two‐dimensional (2D) piezoelectric hexagonal boron nitride nanoflakes (h‐BN NFs) exhibit substantial potential for energy harvesting, electronics, and optoelectronics applications. Herein, a free‐standing PVDF/h‐BN NFs (Ph‐BN) composite film is synthesized for multi‐functional purposes. First and foremost, a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) device is fabricated using free‐standing Ph‐BN composite films and the energy harvesting properties are performed. The nanogenerator, Ph‐BN‐7.5 PENG, exhibits the highest output voltage of 50 V and current of 250 nA with a maximum power of about 2 μW compared to other fabricated composite devices. Further, a photo power cell (PPC) is fabricated using PVA‐EY mixture dye as the photosensitive part or solar energy absorber, and Ph‐BN 7.5 film is utilized as the energy storage part. The PPC is self‐charged up to ≈1 V within 80 s under light illumination. The self‐charging mechanism for PPC is explained in detail. Summary: Pork cutlets are susceptible to cross‐contamination with foodborne pathogens during processing. Food irradiation effectively improves food hygiene by eliminating microbes. We investigated the application of X‐ray irradiation (0.5–10 kGy) on pathogen inactivation (D10 value), quality changes [total aerobic bacteria (TAB), yeast and mould (Y&M), total coliform (TC), colour, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), and pH], and the hydrocarbon profile of pork cutlets. D10 values of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus were 0.37, 0.62, 0.52, and 0.36 kGy, respectively. At least 3.10 kGy (5‐D10 values) is required to ensure the microbiological safety of pork cutlets. X‐ray irradiation dose‐dependently reduced all microbial counts, and up to 7 kGy had no adverse effects on colour, TBARS, and pH. Furthermore, 1,7‐hexadecadiene and 8‐heptadecene were potential markers for irradiated pork cutlets. X‐ray irradiation of up to 7 kGy is effective in improving hygiene levels while maintaining pork cutlet quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Implantable electrical neurostimulators offer a promising avenue for treating neurological disorders. However, their dependency on a finite battery life limits their long‐term utility. Emerging transcutaneous ultrasound‐driven triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) techniques provide solutions for converting external ultrasound waves into internal electricity. This study proposes an implantable ultrasound‐driven TENG (IU‐TENG) using polyether ether ketone (PEEK) for its exceptional stability inside a human body and acoustic impedance compatibility with human tissues. This IU‐TENG remarkably surpasses traditional titanium‐based encapsulation, resulting in a 99.94% efficiency in ultrasound transmission. In addition, PEEK contains numerous electron‐donating functional groups, making it suitable for TENG applications, particularly as a positive triboelectric layer. The device exhibits robust voltage outputs, reaching up to 11.50 and 8.75 V in water and in vivo, respectively, under body‐safe ultrasound intensities. Moreover, its ability to sustain a stable electrical output for over 300 min emphasizes the durability and mechanical resilience of PEEK. In vivo mouse models and ex vivo porcine tissue trials demonstrate the effectiveness of the IU‐TENG in nerve stimulation, showing its potential in medical treatments, enhancing the functionality and longevity of implantable medical devices. This systematic review and meta‐analysis investigated the impact of salvage surgery on 5‐year overall survival (OS) and prognostic factors in recurrent oral cavity cancer (rOCC) patients. Relevant literature before May 2022 was reviewed, including retrospective cohort studies and observational studies comparing salvage surgery to other treatments. Risk‐of‐bias assessments were conducted using the Newcastle–Ottawa scale. Statistical and subgroup analyses assessed the impact of salvage surgery on 5‐year OS and prognostic factors. 3036 documents were initially retrieved, with 14 retrospective cohort studies (2069 participants) included. Meta‐analysis of 5‐year OS in salvage surgery patients yielded a rate of 43.0%. Subgroup analysis showed higher OS in Asians (49.9% vs. 36.9%, p = 0.003) and late‐relapse (63.8% vs. 30.0%, p = 0.004) groups. Prognostic factors revealed hazards associated with nodal recurrence, extranodal extension, and perineural invasion. Salvage surgery is a viable option for rOCC patients, showing favorable 5‐year OS outcomes. Atomically dispersed single‐atom catalysts (SACs) on carbon supports show great promise for H2O2 electrosynthesis, but conventional wet chemistry methods using particulate carbon blacks in powder form have limited their potential as two‐electron (2e−) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. Here, we demonstrate high‐performance Co SACs supported on a free‐standing aligned carbon nanofiber (CNF) using electrospinning and arc plasma deposition (APD). Based on the surface oxidation treatment of aligned CNF and precise control of the deposition amount in a dry‐based APD process, we successfully form densely populated Co SACs on aligned CNF. Through experimental analyses and density functional theory calculations, we reveal that Co SAC has a Co–N2–O2 moiety with one epoxy group, leading to excellent 2e− ORR activity. Furthermore, the aligned CNF significantly improves mass transfer in flow cells compared to randomly oriented CNF, showing an overpotential reduction of 30 mV and a 1.3‐fold improvement (84.5%) in Faradaic efficiency, and finally achieves an outstanding production rate of 15.75 mol gcat−1 h−1 at 300 mA cm−2. The high‐performance Co SAC supported on well‐aligned CNF is also applied in an electro‐Fenton process, demonstrating rapid removal of methylene blue and bisphenol F due to its exceptional 2e− ORR activity. Background and purpose: Maintaining mitochondrial quality is attracting attention as a new strategy to treat diabetes and diabetic complications. We previously reported that mitochondrial hyperfission by forming a protein complex between dynamin‐related protein (Drp) 1 and filamin, mediates chronic heart failure and cilnidipine, initially developed as an L/N‐type Ca2+ channel blocker, improves heart failure by inhibiting Drp1‐filamin protein complex. We investigated whether cilnidipine improves hyperglycaemia of various diabetic mice models. Experimental Approach: Retrospective analysis focusing on haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was performed in hypertensive and hyperglycaemic patients taking cilnidipine and amlodipine. After developing diabetic mice by streptozotocin (STZ) treatment, an osmotic pump including drug was implanted intraperitoneally, followed by weekly measurements of blood glucose levels. Mitochondrial morphology was analysed by electron microscopy. A Ca2+ channel‐insensitive cilnidipine derivative (1,4‐dihydropyridine [DHP]) was synthesized and its pharmacological effect was evaluated using obese (ob/ob) mice fed with high‐fat diet (HFD). Key Results: In patients, cilnidipine was superior to amlodipine in HbA1c lowering effect. Cilnidipine treatment improved systemic hyperglycaemia and mitochondrial morphological abnormalities in STZ‐exposed mice, without lowering blood pressure. Cilnidipine failed to improve hyperglycaemia of ob/ob mice, with suppressing insulin secretion. 1,4‐DHP improved hyperglycaemia and mitochondria abnormality in ob/ob mice fed HFD. 1,4‐DHP and cilnidipine improved basal oxygen consumption rate of HepG2 cells cultured under 25 mM glucose. The effect of nitrogen on an anticorrosive Cr coating for the Zr alloy cladding of nuclear fuel rods is investigated. It is aimed to reduce the number of typical columnar defects generated in Cr‐based coatings when using the cathodic arc ion plating method through reactive nitrogen inclusion and improve the oxidation resistance. Under a working pressure of 5 Pa and an arc current of 60 A in a chrome target, Cr‐based coatings are fabricated under varying N2/Ar gas flow ratios and substrate biases. The growth structures, crystallography, and corrosion behavior of the coatings are characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and potentiodynamic polarization tests. The Cr coating exhibits a typical columnar structure with voids, pores, and columnar defects. In comparison, through nitrogen inclusion, when the nitrogen content of the Cr‐based coating is less than 15 at%, the Cr(N) coating shows a "featureless structure" similar to an amorphous structure, resulting in fewer voids and defects. Potentiodynamic polarization tests reveal that the Cr(N) coating, featuring a distorted body‐centered cubic‐Cr structure, exhibits a significantly low corrosion current in the passive region. The protection efficiency of the Cr(N) coating is calculated to be 96.9%, confirming its superior substrate protection capabilities compared with chromium nitride coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the cornerstone intervention for cardiac arrest, with extracorporeal CPR (ECPR) demonstrating enhanced survival and neurologic outcomes in in‐hospital cardiac arrest. This study explores the time interval between CPR initiation and the onset of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in ECPR recipients, investigating its impact on survival outcomes. Methods: This retrospective analysis included 1950 adults who received CPR at a single medical center between March 2019 and April 2023. Data from 198 adult patients who had ECMO inserted during CPR were analyzed. The interval from CPR initiation to ECMO initiation was quantified and categorized as ≤20, 20–40, and >40 min. Cox regression analysis assessed associations between CPR‐to‐ECMO time and short‐ and long‐term mortalities. Results: Among the 198 patients who underwent ECPR, 116 (58.6%) experienced 30‐day mortality. Initiation of ECMO within 20 min occurred in 46 (23.2%), whereas 74 (37.4%) had ECMO initiated after 40 min. Cox regression revealed a significant association between time from CPR to ECMO initiation and 30‐day mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [HR]: 2.20 in >40 min, HR: 2.63 in 20–40 min, p = 0.006) and 6‐month mortality (HR: 1.81, in >40 min, HR: 1.99 in 20–40 min, p = 0.021). Conclusions: This study revealed that, in ECPR recipients, a shorter duration between CPR initiation and ECMO flow commencement is associated with improved short‐ and long‐term patient prognoses. Plasmodesmata (PDs) are intercellular organelles carrying multiple membranous nanochannels that allow the trafficking of cellular signalling molecules. The channel regulation of PDs occurs dynamically and is required in various developmental and physiological processes. It is well known that callose is a critical component in regulating PD permeability or symplasmic connectivity, but the understanding of the signalling pathways and mechanisms of its regulation is limited. Here, we used the reverse genetic approach to investigate the role of C‐type lectin receptor‐like kinase 1 (CLRLK1) in the aspect of PD callose‐modulated symplasmic continuity. Here, we found that loss‐of‐function mutations in CLRLK1 resulted in excessive PD callose deposits and reduced symplasmic continuity, resulting in an accelerated gravitropic response. The protein interactome study also found that CLRLK1 interacted with actin depolymerizing factor 3 (ADF3) in vitro and in plants. Moreover, mutations in ADF3 result in elevated PD callose deposits and faster gravitropic response. Our results indicate that CLRLK1 and ADF3 negatively regulate PD callose accumulation, contributing to fine‐tuning symplasmic opening apertures. Overall, our studies identified two key components involved in the deposits of PD callose and provided new insights into how symplasmic connectivity is maintained by the control of PD callose homoeostasis. The uniformity of performance parameters such as electric field and temperature for a co‐linear pulsed electric field (PEF) processing system is one of main factors affecting the processing effect and quality of liquid food. We have proposed a co‐linear PEF treatment chamber configuration with sub‐electrodes to improve the uniformity and processing efficiency. We have first examined how the position of the sub‐electrodes alone affects the uniformity of the performance parameters. Then, we have investigated the variation of the uniformity while changing simultaneously the electrode radius, inter‐electrode gap, and position of sub‐electrodes. As a result, we have found that the most uniform field could be obtained when the electrode radius is 5.5 mm, the inter‐electrode gap is 15 mm, and the sub‐electrodes situate at the middle of the chamber. In this chamber, the region between 95% and 105% of the average electric field covers 83%, which shows much improvement compared to the formers' results, 69.5% and 76%, respectively. Also, the optimal treatment chamber provides greater average electric field under the same voltages as the voltages reported by the formers. Practical applications: A novel treatment chamber with sub‐electrodes is proposed for pulsed electric fields food processing. The improved treatment design was obtained by changing position of sub‐electrodes, inner radius of electrodes and distance between electrodes. The more uniform electric field was obtained in treatment region. The temperature distribution was more uniformed by increasing flow rates and uniformed electric field strength. Epithelial‐stromal interplay through chemomechanical cues from cells and matrix propels cancer progression. Elevated tissue stiffness in potentially malignant tissues suggests a link between matrix stiffness and enhanced tumor growth. In this study, employing chronic oral/esophageal injury and cancer models, it is demonstrated that epithelial–stromal interplay through matrix stiffness and Hedgehog (Hh) signaling is key in compounding cancer development. Epithelial cells actively interact with fibroblasts, exchanging mechanoresponsive signals during the precancerous stage. Specifically, epithelial cells release Sonic Hh, activating fibroblasts to produce matrix proteins and remodeling enzymes, resulting in tissue stiffening. Subsequently, basal epithelial cells adjacent to the stiffened tissue become proliferative and undergo epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition, acquiring migratory and invasive properties, thereby promoting invasive tumor growth. Notably, transcriptomic programs of oncogenic GLI2, mechano‐activated by actin cytoskeletal tension, govern this process, elucidating the crucial role of non‐canonical GLI2 activation in orchestrating the proliferation and mesenchymal transition of epithelial cells. Furthermore, pharmacological intervention targeting tissue stiffening proves highly effective in slowing cancer progression. These findings underscore the impact of epithelial‐stromal interplay through chemo‐mechanical (Hh‐stiffness) signaling in cancer development, and suggest that targeting tissue stiffness holds promise as a strategy to disrupt chemo‐mechanical feedback, enabling effective cancer treatment. Summary: Plants, as a sessile organism, produce various secondary metabolites to interact with the environment. These chemicals have fascinated the plant science community because of their ecological significance and notable biological activity. However, predicting the complete biosynthetic pathways from target molecules to metabolic building blocks remains a challenge.Here, we propose retrieval‐augmented dual‐view retrosynthesis (READRetro) as a practical bio‐retrosynthesis tool to predict the biosynthetic pathways of plant natural products. Conventional bio‐retrosynthesis models have been limited in their ability to predict biosynthetic pathways for natural products. READRetro was optimized for the prediction of complex metabolic pathways by incorporating cutting‐edge deep learning architectures, an ensemble approach, and two retrievers.Evaluation of single‐ and multi‐step retrosynthesis showed that each component of READRetro significantly improved its ability to predict biosynthetic pathways. Summary: Changes in the plant microbiota composition are intimately associated with the health of the plant, but factors controlling the microbial community in flowers are poorly understood. In this study, we used apple flowers and fire blight as a model system to investigate the effects of floral microbiota and microbial competition on disease development and suppression.To compare changes in microbial flora with the RNA expression patterns of plants, the flower samples were collected in three different flowering stages (Bud, Popcorn, and Full‐bloom). Using advanced sequencing technology, we analyzed the data and conducted both in vitro and in vivo experiments to validate our findings.Our results show that the Erwinia amylovora use arabinogalactan, which is secreted on the flowers, for early colonization of apple flowers. Pantoea agglomerans was more competitive for arabinogalactan than E. amylovora. Additionally, P. agglomerans suppressed the expression of virulence factors of E. amylovora by using arabinose, which is a major component of arabinogalactan, which induces virulence gene expression.The present data provide new insights into developing control strategies for diverse plant diseases, including fire blight, by highlighting the importance of nutrients in disease development or suppression. Background and Aim: Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is one of the standard modalities used to treat unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the effectiveness of TACE for treating patients with a solitary small (≤3 cm) HCC and well‐preserved liver function has not been definitively established. This study aimed to determine the therapeutic impact of TACE in patients with these characteristics. Methods: This multicenter (four university hospitals) retrospective cohort study analyzed the medical records of 250 patients with a solitary small (≤3 cm) HCC and Child–Turcotte–Pugh (CTP) class A liver function diagnosed over 10 years. Posttreatment outcomes, including overall survival (OS), recurrence‐free survival (RFS), and adverse events, were assessed following TACE therapy. Results: One hundred and thirty‐eight of the 250 patients (55.2%) treated with TACE achieved complete remission (CR). Overall median OS was 77.7 months, and median OS was significantly longer in the CR group than in the non‐CR group (89.1 vs. 58.8 months, P = 0.001). Median RFS was 19.1 months in the CR group. Subgroup analysis identified hypertension, an elevated serum albumin level, and achieving CR as significant positive predictors of OS, whereas diabetes, hepatitis c virus infection, and tumor size (>2 cm) were poor prognostic factors of OS. Conclusions: The study demonstrates the effectiveness of TACE as a viable alternative for treating solitary small (≤3 cm) HCC in CTP class A patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aim: The Model for End‐Stage Liver Disease (MELD) is a reliable prognostic tool for short‐term outcome prediction in patients with end‐stage liver disease. MELD 3.0 was introduced to enhance the predictive accuracy. This study assessed the performance of MELD 3.0, in comparison to MELD and MELD‐Na, in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis. Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study comprised patients with alcoholic cirrhosis admitted for acute deterioration of liver function in the Republic of Korea between 2015 and 2019. This study compared the predictive abilities of MELD, MELD‐Na, and MELD 3.0, for 30‐day and 90‐day outcomes, specifically death or liver transplantation, and explored the factors influencing these outcomes. Results: A total of 1096 patients were included in the study, with a mean age of 53.3 ± 10.4 years, and 82.0% were male. The mean scores for MELD, MELD‐Na, and MELD 3.0 at the time of admission were 18.7 ± 7.2, 20.6 ± 7.7, and 21.0 ± 7.8, respectively. At 30 and 90 days, 7.2% and 14.1% of patients experienced mortality or liver transplantation. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for MELD, MELD‐Na, and MELD 3.0 at 30 days were 0.823, 0.820, and 0.828; and at 90 days were 0.765, 0.772, and 0.776, respectively. Factors associated with the 90‐day outcome included concomitant chronic viral hepatitis, prolonged prothrombin time, elevated levels of aspartate transaminase, bilirubin, and creatinine, and low albumin levels. The DNA intelligence tool, DNA methylation‐based age prediction, can help identify disaster victims and suspects in criminal investigations. In this study, we developed a costal cartilage‐based age prediction tool that uses massive parallel sequencing (MPS) of age‐associated DNA methylation markers. Costal cartilage samples were obtained from 85 deceased Koreans, aged between 26 and 89 years. An MPS library was prepared using two rounds of multiplex polymerase chain reaction of nine genes (TMEM51, MIR29B2CHG, EDARADD, FHL2, TRIM59, ELOVL2, KLF14, ASPA, and PDE4C). The DNA methylation status of 45 CpG sites was determined and used to train an age prediction model via stepwise regression analysis. Nine CpGs in MIR29B2CHG, FHL2, TRIM59, ELOVL2, KLF14, and ASPA were selected for regression model construction. A leave‐one‐out cross‐validation analysis revealed the high performance of the age prediction model, with a mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error of 4.97 and 6.43 years, respectively. Additionally, our model showed good performance with a MAE of 6.06 years in the analysis of data of 181 costal cartilage samples collected from Europeans. Our model effectively estimates the age of deceased individuals using costal cartilage samples; therefore, it can be a valuable forensic tool for disaster victim and missing person investigation. Introduction: Among many antiretroviral drugs, tenofovir alafenamide is used extensively in combination regimens of tenofovir/emtricitabine or tenofovir/emtricitabine/bictegravir. However, concerns have arisen about the potential of tenofovir alafenamide to exacerbate hyperlipidaemia. This meta‐analysis evaluates the relationship between tenofovir alafenamide use and lipid‐profile alterations in people living with HIV. Methods: We searched PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library to identify studies on changes in cholesterol levels (e.g. total cholesterol, low‐density and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides) in people living with HIV who received treatment with a regimen containing tenofovir alafenamide (data collected 31 March 2023, review completed 30 July 2023). Potential risk factors for worsening lipid profile during treatment with tenofovir alafenamide were also evaluated. Results: Sixty‐five studies involving 39,713 people living with HIV were selected. Significant increases in total cholesterol, low‐density and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides were observed after treatment with tenofovir alafenamide. Specifically, low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (+12.31 mg/dl) and total cholesterol (+18.86 mg/dl) increased markedly from the third month of tenofovir alafenamide use, with significant elevations observed across all time points up to 36 months. Comparatively, tenofovir alafenamide regimens resulted in higher lipid levels than tenofovir disoproxil fumarate regimens at 12 months of use. Notably, discontinuation of the tenofovir alafenamide regimen led to significant decreases in low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (–9.31 mg/dl) and total cholesterol (–8.91 mg/dl). Additionally, tenofovir alafenamide use was associated with increased bodyweight (+1.38 kg; 95% confidence interval: 0.92–1.84), which became more pronounced over time. Meta‐regression analysis identified young age, male sex and low body mass index as risk factors for worsening cholesterol levels in individuals treated with tenofovir alafenamide. Background: Despite advancements in reconstructive procedures, ischemia‐reperfusion (I/R) injury remains a significant challenge in reconstructive surgery, with mitochondrial dysfunction playing a pivotal role. Mitochondrial transplantation has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy to address this issue. This study aims to evaluate the impact of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell‐derived mitochondrial transplantation on skin flap I/R models in rats. Material and methods: Twenty male rats underwent I/R injury on skin flaps, with or without mitochondrial transplantation administered via intravenous or subcutaneous routes. Analysis encompassed histopathology, inflammatory, apoptotic, oxidative stress, and hypoxia markers. Results: Results revealed a reduction in inflammation, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and hypoxia in the transplantation group compared to controls. Conclusion: The findings suggest that umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell‐derived mitochondrial transplantation shows promise in enhancing flap viability and attenuating I/R injury, offering valuable insights for improved outcomes in reconstructive surgery. As persistent elevation of transforming growth factor‐β (TGF‐β) promotes fibrosis of muscles and joints and accelerates disease progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), we investigated whether inhibition of TGF‐β would be effective against both exacerbations. The effects of TGF‐β and its inhibitor on myoblasts and fibroblasts were tested in vitro and confirmed in vivo, and the dual action of a TGF‐β inhibitor in ameliorating the pathogenic role of TGF‐β in ALS mice was identified. In the peripheral neuromuscular system, fibrosis in the muscles and joint cavities induced by excessive TGF‐β causes joint contracture and muscular degeneration, which leads to motor dysfunction. In an ALS mouse model, an increase in TGF‐β in the central nervous system (CNS), consistent with astrocyte activity, was associated with M1 microglial activity and pro‐inflammatory conditions, as well as with neuronal cell death. Treatment with the TGF‐β inhibitor halofuginone could prevent musculoskeletal fibrosis, resulting in the alleviation of joint contracture and delay of motor deterioration in ALS mice. Halofuginone could also reduce glial cell‐induced neuroinflammation and neuronal apoptosis. These dual therapeutic effects on both the neuromuscular system and the CNS were observed from the beginning to the end stages of ALS; as a result, treatment with a TGF‐β inhibitor from the early stage of disease delayed the time of symptom exacerbation in ALS mice, which led to prolonged survival. Unintended on-target chromosomal alterations induced by CRISPR/Cas9 in mammalian cells are common, particularly large deletions and chromosomal translocations, and present a safety challenge for genome editing. Thus, there is still an unmet need to develop safer and more efficient editing tools. We screened diverse DNA polymerases of distinct origins and identified a T4 DNA polymerase derived from phage T4 that strongly prevents undesired on-target damage while increasing the proportion of precise 1- to 2-base-pair insertions generated during CRISPR/Cas9 editing (termed CasPlus). CasPlus induced substantially fewer on-target large deletions while increasing the efficiency of correcting common frameshift mutations in DMD and restored higher level of dystrophin expression than Cas9-alone in human cardiomyocytes. Moreover, CasPlus greatly reduced the frequency of on-target large deletions during mouse germline editing. In multiplexed guide RNAs mediating gene editing, CasPlus repressed chromosomal translocations while maintaining gene disruption efficiency that was higher or comparable to Cas9 in primary human T cells. Therefore, CasPlus offers a safer and more efficient gene editing strategy to treat pathogenic variants or to introduce genetic modifications in human applications. Synopsis: While off-target mutations have been carefully addressed, CRISPR/Cas9 mediated genome editing often causes harmful on-target chromosomal alterations. CasPlus combines Cas9 genome editing with an engineered phage T4 DNA polymerase and reduces the incidence of large deletions and chromosomal translocations. CasPlus can be applied to correct disease-causing mutations such as in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), but also for generating engineered T cells for cell therapy. CasPlus editing inhibits undesired on-target large deletions while increasing the proportion of precise 1- to 2-base-pair insertions generated during CRISPR/Cas9 editing. CasPlus efficiently corrects the frameshift mutations in DMD (exon 52 deletions) with fewer on-target DNA damage. CasPlus greatly reduces the frequency of on-target large deletions in mouse germline editing. CasPlus represses chromosomal translocation while maintaining gene disruption efficiency that is higher or comparable to Cas9 in multiplex gene-edited human primary T cells. Objectives: We aimed to identify predictive markers for metachronous gastric cancer (MGC) in early gastric cancer (EGC) patients curatively treated with endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Materials and Methods: From EGC patients who underwent ESD, bulk RNA sequencing was performed on non‐cancerous gastric mucosa samples at the time of initial EGC diagnosis. This included 23 patients who developed MGC, and 23 control patients without additional gastric neoplasms for over 3 years (1:1 matched by age, sex, and Helicobacter pylori infection state). Candidate differentially‐expressed genes were identified, from which biomarkers were selected using real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and cell viability assays using gastric cell lines. An independent validation cohort of 55 MGC patients and 125 controls was used for marker validation. We also examined the severity of gastric intestinal metaplasia, a known premalignant condition, at initial diagnosis. Results: From the discovery cohort, 86 candidate genes were identified of which KDF1 and CDK1 were selected as markers for MGC, which were confirmed in the validation cohort. CERB5 and AKT2 isoform were identified as markers related to intestinal metaplasia and were also highly expressed in MGC patients compared to controls (p < 0.01). Combining these markers with clinical data (age, sex, H. pylori and severity of intestinal metaplasia) yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.91 (95% CI, 0.85‐0.97) for MGC prediction. Conclusion: Assessing biomarkers in non‐cancerous gastric mucosa may be a useful method for predicting MGC in EGC patients and identifying patients with a higher risk of developing MGC, who can benefit from rigorous surveillance. Piezoelectric materials with tunable photoluminescence have gained widespread attention for their application in optical communications and optoelectronic sensing devices. This has provided new opportunities to explore the possibility of developing flexible piezoelectric devices with both piezoelectricity and photoluminescence for multifunctional applications. In this study, we prepared a crystalline Pr‐doped perovskite BaTiO3 (BPTO) film on a flexible mica substrate using the radio‐frequency (RF) sputtering technique. The photoluminescence intensity remarkably increased by about 210% when external mechanical stress was applied to the film. This remarkable increase in photoluminescence is attributed to lattice distortion and a decrease in crystal symmetry. The BPTO film also exhibited reversible and high‐endurance behavior even after 103 fatigue bending cycles. Moreover, the BPTO film was utilized as a piezoelectric nanogenerator device, which demonstrated a maximum output voltage of about 2.68 V when external stress was applied through palm tapping. The nanogenerator device yielded an instantaneous output power of 1.80 μW with an external load resistance of 0.8 MΩ. These versatile and robust properties of the BPTO film demonstrate its potential for future development of lead‐free self‐powered optoelectronic sensing applications, such as artificial intelligence and biomedical devices. Krabbe disease (KD) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder caused by deficiency of the galactocerebrosidase (GALC) due to variants in the GALC gene. Here, we provide the first and the largest comprehensive analysis of clinical and genetic characteristics, and genotype–phenotype correlations of KD in Korean in comparison with other ethnic groups. From June 2010 to June 2023, 10 patients were diagnosed with KD through sequencing of GALC. Clinical features, and results of GALC sequencing, biochemical test, neuroimaging, and neurophysiologic test were obtained from medical records. An additional nine previously reported Korean KD patients were included for review. In Korean KD patients, the median age of onset was 2 years (3 months–34 years) and the most common phenotype was adult‐onset (33%, 6/18) KD, followed by infantile KD (28%, 5/18). The most frequent variants were c.683_694delinsCTC (23%) and c.1901T>C (23%), while the 30‐kb deletion was absent. Having two heterozygous pathogenic missense variants was associated with later‐onset phenotype. Clinical features were similar to those of other ethnic groups. In Korean KD patients, the most common phenotype was the adult‐onset type and the GALC variant spectrum was different from that of the Caucasian population. Callose, a β‐1,3‐glucan plant cell wall polymer, regulates symplasmic channel size at plasmodesmata (PD) and plays a crucial role in a variety of plant processes. However, elucidating the molecular mechanism of PD callose homeostasis is limited. We screened and identified an Arabidopsis mutant plant with excessive callose deposition at PD and found that the mutated gene was α1‐COP, a member of the coat protein I (COPI) coatomer complex. We report that loss of function of α1‐COP elevates the callose accumulation at PD by affecting subcellular protein localization of callose degradation enzyme PdBG2. This process is linked to the functions of ERH1, an inositol phosphoryl ceramide synthase, and glucosylceramide synthase through physical interactions with the α1‐COP protein. Additionally, the loss of function of α1‐COP alters the subcellular localization of ERH1 and GCS proteins, resulting in a reduction of GlcCers and GlcHCers molecules, which are key sphingolipid (SL) species for lipid raft formation. Our findings suggest that α1‐COP protein, together with SL modifiers controlling lipid raft compositions, regulates the subcellular localization of GPI‐anchored PDBG2 proteins, and hence the callose turnover at PD and symplasmic movement of biomolecules. Pathogens generate and secrete effector proteins to the host plant cells during pathogenesis to promote virulence and colonization. If the plant carries resistance (R) proteins that recognize pathogen effectors, effector‐triggered immunity (ETI) is activated, resulting in a robust immune response and hypersensitive response (HR). The bipartite effector AvrRps4 from Pseudomonas syringae pv. pisi has been well studied in terms of avirulence function. In planta, AvrRps4 is processed into two parts. The C‐terminal fragment of AvrRps4 (AvrRps4C) induces HR in turnip and is recognized by the paired resistance proteins AtRRS1/AtRPS4 in Arabidopsis. Here, we show that AvrRps4C targets a group of Arabidopsis WRKY, including WRKY46, WRKY53, WRKY54, and WRKY70, to induce its virulence function. Indeed, AvrRps4C suppresses the general binding and transcriptional activities of immune‐positive regulator WRKY54 and WRKY54‐mediated resistance. AvrRps4C interferes with WRKY54's binding activity to target gene SARD1 in vitro, suggesting WRKY54 is sequestered from the SARD1 promoter by AvrRps4C. Through the interaction of AvrRps4C with four WRKYs, AvrRps4 enhances the formation of homo‐/heterotypic complexes of four WRKYs and sequesters them in the cytoplasm, thus inhibiting their function in plant immunity. We investigate solar halo terms in observations recorded in the Crown Prince Sohyeon's Donggung‐Ilgi (Seventeenth century) and identify their equivalent terminologies in modern atmospheric optics. We refer to related historical Korean and Chinese materials (e.g. Pungun‐Gi, Observation Log for Wind and Clouds, for 6 December 1748), analyse the distributions of each term according to the sun elevation and consult modern studies on halo simulations. Then, we compare our findings with the results of previous works. This study will contribute to the understanding of halo events recorded in historical East Asian documents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tuning the color of Au has been a longstanding problem in the luxury industry. Conventional approaches, involving Au alloying, compromise purity and demand distinct alloy compositions for each hue. This study demonstrates a lithography‐free method for generating structural colors on a gold surface by adjusting the thickness of titanium dioxide, a high‐index dielectric. While color tuneability is limited if TiO2 is coated directly on the Au surface, a range of vivid colors can be generated if a 50−100 nm thick AuAl2 underlayer is used. AuAl2, an accepted alloy for purple gold, broadens the color gamut, providing a protective coating without diminishing gold purity. The reflectance dip of the bilayer structure exhibits a significant red shift with increasing thickness of the TiO2 layer, allowing diverse colors by TiO2 insulator tuning. Simulation studies corroborate experimental results, affirming that coating a TiO2 layer on the AuAl2 underlayer yields a wide range of colors. This method, based on thin‐film interference, shows promise for widespread use, offering a broad spectrum of structural colors in an industry striving for diverse Au color representation. Hydrogen (H2) gas is a green fuel, but its leakage during storage and transportation can lead to disasters due to its explosive nature. Here, a sensitive and selective H2 gas sensor is developed that can detect H2 in H2/CO and H2/NO2 gas mixtures. First, ZnO nanowires (NWs) are grown using vapor–liquid–solid growth. This is followed by atomic layer deposition‐mediated growth of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on the ZnO NWs and uniform deposition of a thin NiO shell layer (12 nm in thickness) over the Pd‐decorated ZnO NWs. Characterization of the synthesized samples by different methods confirms the desired chemical composition, morphology, and phases. H2 gas sensing studies reveals the highly sensitive and selective response of the optimized gas sensor to H2 at 200 °C. In the presence of H2/CO and H2/NO2 gas mixtures, the NiO‐shelled Pd‐decorated ZnO NW sensor displays good selectivity for H2, but not the Pd‐decorated ZnO NW gas one. The NiO‐shelled Pd‐decorated ZnO NW gas sensor efficiently detected H2 also in the presence of 40% relative humidity and displays good stability even after 1 month. Half‐Heusler compounds are promising materials for thermoelectric applications due to their high zT at elevated temperatures. However, their intrinsic high thermal conductivity limits their efficiency. Doping with Hf or Zr can improve the zT of these materials. Recently, a high zT of 1.5 at 1200 K achieved in p‐type Nb1‐xHfxFeSb has attracted much attention. While the effect of doping Hf in thermal conductivity is studied thoroughly, the effect of Hf doping on band parameters is not fully evaluated. This study investigates the effect of Hf and Zr doping on the electronic band parameters and thermoelectric properties of NbFeSb using the Single Parabolic Band model. The results show that Hf doping increases the weighted mobility of the samples, while Zr doping has no significant effect. Hf doping with x = 0.14 is predicted to improve the zT of NbFeSb by 35% at 300 K (0.19 → 0.26). These results show the intricate effects of Hf and Zr doping on the electronic and thermal properties of NbFeSb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar and wind energy for water electrolysis are gaining interest in contemporary times. In this context, platinum catalysts are commonly recognized as the standard for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), yet their effectiveness is constrained by their high cost and inadequate stability. Combining Ru and Ni lowers the material expense and greatly improves the electrocatalytic performance. Therefore, in the present study, a 3D nanostructured amorphous RuO2 aerogel is doped with various concentrations of Ni for enhanced HER activity. The results indicate that the 4% Ni‐RuO2 aerogel exhibits a 0D colloidal network featuring interconnected mesopores, with a high specific surface area of 241.5 m2·g−1. In addition, the 4% Ni‐RuO2 aerogel catalyst exhibits the lowest overpotentials of 63 and 122 mV at current densities of 10 and 50 mA·cm−2, respectively, along with enhanced hydrogen adsorption activity for the HER due to the 3D porous structure of the aerogel. However, a further increase in Ni doping leads to a decrease in HER activity due to a reduction in the number of catalytic Ru sites. The study found that doping with the optimum amount of Ni causes a redistribution of charges on the sample surface, thereby uncovering more reaction sites and enhancing the electrocatalytic performance. This study examines the effects of presidential elections (PEs) on firms' accounting conservatism in Korea. The Korean president exerts great influence on the government's financial, monetary, subsidiary, and regulatory policies. At the same time, however, the Korean constitution prohibits the re‐election of the incumbent president. This simultaneously strong and fragile presidential system creates unique political uncertainty, which deteriorates the information gap between firms' insiders and outsiders. According to the efficient contracting channel, accounting conservatism is expected to relieve information asymmetry by recognizing the economic losses faster than economic gains. But we posit that the effectiveness of accounting conservatism depends on the information environment within which they operate. If the information environment facilitates a compensation system for an increase in accounting conservatism under high uncertainty, managers may prefer to expand conservative accounting practices. However, if there is no such incentive mechanism, managers may opt to suspend accounting conservatism because the cost of revealing bad news increases during periods of uncertainty. Test results show that PEs encourage managers to delay rather than expedite the timely recognition of economic losses. This negative effect becomes more pronounced in firms with higher reliance on government contracts than firms with lower such reliance. We also find that Korean chaebol‐affiliated firms are likely to increase accounting conservatism during PEs. In general, US‐based studies support the positive relationship between information asymmetry and accounting conservatism, while this study demonstrates that this relationship can be reverse depending on the institutional environment.
