Background: Lyme disease (LD), the most common vector‐borne disease in the United States, typically presents with a localised erythema migrans rash (EM). Left untreated, infection can disseminate to cause severe heart, joint or nervous system manifestations. Summaries of LD surveillance data have been published previously but did not include the frequency, demographic or clinical characteristics of LD cases during pregnancy. Methods: We summarised confirmed and probable LD cases by pregnancy status as reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during 1992–2019. We defined an LD case during pregnancy as one with (1) female sex, (2) age 14–49 years and (3) positive pregnancy indication. We evaluated the frequency, seasonality, age distribution, race and ethnicity, geographic distribution and clinical manifestations of LD cases during pregnancy and cases among non‐pregnant females. We compared proportions using chi‐squared tests. Results: Among 698,876 reported LD cases, 112,002 (16%) were confirmed or probable cases among females aged 14–49 years; 32,301 (29%) were specifically reported as non‐pregnant and 643 (0.6%) (568 confirmed and 75 probable cases) reported as pregnant. Illness onset peaked in June among LD cases during pregnancy, but in July for cases among non‐pregnant females. A higher proportion of confirmed LD cases during pregnancy had only EM rash than did cases among non‐pregnant females (66% vs. 60%, p = 0.019). Conclusions: LD cases during pregnancy are rare. Compared to non‐pregnant females, cases among pregnant females more commonly involve early clinical manifestations. These patterns could suggest earlier detection or more complete reporting of LD cases during pregnancy than their non‐pregnant counterparts. Earlier detection could be due to frequent contact with healthcare or increased self‐advocacy during pregnancy. Methane emissions by global wetlands are anticipated to increase due to climate warming. The increase in methane represents a sizable emissions source (32–68 Tg CH4 year−1 greater in 2099 than 2010, for RCP2.6–4.5) that threatens long‐term climate stability and poses a significant positive feedback that magnifies climate warming. However, management of this feedback, which is ultimately driven by human‐caused warming and thus "indirectly" anthropogenic, has been largely unexplored. Here, we review the known range of options for direct management of rising wetland methane emissions, outline contexts for their application, and explore a global scale thought experiment to gauge their potential impact. Among potential management options for methane emissions from wetlands, substrate amendments, particularly sulfate, are the most well studied, although the majority have only been tested in laboratory settings and without considering potential environmental externalities. Using published models, we find that the bulk (64%–80%) of additional wetland methane will arise from hotspots making up only about 8% of global wetland extent, primarily occurring in the tropics and subtropics. If applied to these hotspots, sulfate might suppress 10%–21% of the total additional wetland methane emissions, but this treatment comes with considerable negative consequences for the environment. This thought experiment leverages results from experimental simulations of sulfate from acid rain, as there is essentially no research on the use of sulfate for intentional suppression of additional wetland methane emissions. Given the magnitude of the potential climate forcing feedback of methane from wetlands, it is critical to explore management options and their impacts to ensure that decisions made to directly manage—or not manage—this process be made with the best available science. Aims and Methods: In the United States, blacklegged Ixodes spp. ticks are the primary vector of Lyme disease. Minnesota is among the states with the highest reported incidence of Lyme disease, having an average of 1857 cases reported annually during 2011–2019. In contrast to the Northeast and mid‐Atlantic United States where exposure to ticks predominately occurs around the home, the circumstances regarding risk for exposure to blacklegged ticks in Minnesota are not well understood, and risk is thought to be highest in rural areas where people often participate in recreational activities (e.g. hiking, visiting cabins). We analysed enhanced surveillance data collected by the Minnesota Department of Health during 2011–2019 to describe epidemiologic and tick exposure characteristics among people with reported Lyme disease. Results: We found that younger age, male gender, residence in a county with lower Lyme disease risk, residence in the Minneapolis‐St. Paul metropolitan area, and an illness onset date later in the year were independently associated with higher odds of reporting tick exposures away from the home. We also describe the range of activities associated with tick exposure away from the home, including both recreational and occupational activities. Conclusions: These findings refine our understanding of Lyme disease risk in Minnesota and highlight the need for heterogeneous public health prevention messaging, including an increased focus on peridomestic prevention measures among older individuals living in high‐risk rural areas and recreational and occupational prevention measures among younger individuals living in the Minneapolis‐St. Paul metropolitan area. As the climate warms, snow‐dominated regions are increasingly susceptible to precipitation phase changes and earlier snowmelt. In alpine catchments, snowmelt is the majority of runoff, governed by heterogeneous interactions among snowfall, wind, topography and vegetation. The role of the alpine snowpack in delaying the downstream release of accumulated snowfall remains understudied, despite its fundamental role in sustaining lower‐elevation ecosystems and populations. We evaluated fine‐scale changes in the magnitude and duration of alpine snow water storage and release by comparing effective precipitation seasonality to that of surface water inputs using a Snow Storage Index (SSI). We forced the Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model with historical climate conditions and an end‐of‐century warming signal down‐scaled from a 4‐km regional climate model, to simulate future changes in snow water storage and partitioning of precipitation to runoff and evapotranspiration. The hydrological modelling was conducted on a 2‐m spatial grid to resolve fine scale processes over a 0.6‐km2 headwater catchment within the Niwot Ridge Long‐Term Ecological Research site located in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, USA. Proportionally more rainfall, reduced snowpack size and extent, and earlier snowmelt occurred in the future scenario with decreased catchment average SSI and thus snow water storing capabilities, with inordinately large decreases occurring in areas of the catchment with reconstructed snowdrifts (−57% average and −100% maximum). Using the Budyko framework to evaluate annual hydrologic partitioning, precipitation inputs to streamflow increased by a maximum 10% in large SSI regions with snowdrifts under warming conditions, signifying a potential buffer for total catchment and annual streamflow loss in a future climate. The fine‐scale analysis of hydrologic sensitivities to warming presented herein are important because climate conditions are expected to further reduce alpine snow water storage, alter hydrologic partitioning, and runoff generation for ecosystems and people living downstream. Purpose: To determine whether a 24 MHz transducer significantly improves sensitivity, specificity and accuracy in evaluating flexor tendon repair integrity compared with an 18 MHz transducer. Methods: One hundred and twelve cadaveric digits were randomised to an intact repair or simulated 'failed' repair, and to a two‐ or eight‐strand repair of a flexor digitorum profundus laceration. A blinded sonologist evaluated specimens in static mode using 18 and 24 MHz transducers. Gaps were remeasured after scanning, and final gap width recorded. McNemar's exact test calculated differences between sensitivity, specificity and accuracy, and chi‐squared test to compare sensitivity, specificity and accuracy between number of strands (2 vs. 8) and repair gap (≥4 mm). Results: The 24 MHz transducer had higher sensitivity (81 vs. 59%), lower specificity (67 vs. 70%) and higher overall accuracy (74 vs. 64%), than the 18 MHz transducer. The difference for sensitivity was significant (P = 0.011), but not differences for specificity and overall accuracy (P > 0.05). Pearson's correlation (r = 0.61) demonstrated a moderate‐to‐strong positive correlation between measured and true gap sizes. Increased number of suture strands (2 vs. 8) did not impair sensitivity, specificity nor accuracy. Discussion: Ultrasound may tend to overestimate gap width, and a slight risk that some intact repairs, or those with small, clinically insignificant gaps may undergo surgical exploration that may not be indicated. Globally, sulfur (S) applications to croplands result in S inputs that often exceed historical atmospheric deposition. Sulfur is applied to crops as a fertilizer, fungicide, soil conditioner, pH regulator, and carrier for other elements. However, excess S in soils and aquatic ecosystems can have detrimental ecological and biogeochemical consequences, including soil base cation depletion, surface water acidification, hydrogen sulfide toxicity, and increased production of methyl mercury. The dichotomy between S benefits to crops and environmental consequences parallels that of nitrogen and phosphorus; however, there has not yet been a focus on developing sustainable S management plans in agriculture. We review the current literature on S cycling in agricultural systems and propose solutions that reduce S inputs, losses, and ecological consequences, including field applications of organic matter, adaptation of precision agriculture, and implementation of total maximum daily loads. We suggest opportunities for technological innovation, including analysis of remote sensing imagery to identify location and timing of S deficiencies and stresses, crop genetic modification to reduce S requirements, inoculation of plants with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to enhance plant S acquisition, and remediation of wetlands and other anoxic environments with high S loads. We conclude with areas for continued research on S biogeochemistry. Plain Language Summary: The amount of sulfur applied to croplands is increasing notably over the past few decades. Sulfur is applied for many reasons, including to meet crop nutritional demands and to regulate soil chemical conditions. However, large amounts of sulfur in the environment can have harmful impacts, as demonstrated by the consequences of acid deposition in the 1960s and 1970s. Thus, there is a need to better manage when, where, and how much sulfur is added in agriculture, similar to strategies for nitrogen and phosphorus. We propose several solutions to reduce the need for large sulfur inputs and reduce the amount of sulfur that is transported from the soil. These include applying organic matter to agricultural fields, using precision agriculture techniques, and adopting robust surface and groundwater monitoring plans. We also suggest that new innovations in technology—such as remote sensing, crop genetic modification, and wetland remediation—allow new opportunities to improve our management of sulfur. Objective: Gain of function variants in the sodium‐activated potassium channel KCNT1 have been associated with pediatric epilepsy disorders. Here, we systematically examine a spectrum of KCNT1 variants and establish their impact on channel function in multiple cellular systems. Methods: KCNT1 variants identified from published reports and genetic screening of pediatric epilepsy patients were expressed in Xenopus oocytes and HEK cell lines. Variant impact on current magnitude, current–voltage relationships, and sodium ion modulation were examined. Results: We determined basic properties of KCNT1 in Xenopus oocyte and HEK systems, including the role of extra‐ and intracellular sodium in regulating KCNT1 activity. The most common six KCNT1 variants demonstrated strong gain of function (GOF) effects on one or more channel properties. Analysis of 36 total variants identified phenotypic heterogeneity but a strong tendency for pathogenic variants to exert GOF effects on channel properties. By controlling intracellular sodium, we demonstrate that multiple pathogenic KCNT1 variants modulate channel voltage dependence by altering the sensitivity to sodium ions. Significance: This study represents the largest systematic functional examination of KCNT1 variants to date. We both confirm previously reported GOF channel phenotypes and expand the number of variants with in vitro GOF effects. Our data provide further evidence that novel KCNT1 variants identified in epilepsy patients lead to disease through generalizable GOF mechanisms including increases in current magnitude and/or current–voltage relationships. Aim: Understanding the biotic and abiotic mechanisms underlying the generation and maintenance of biogeographic transitions represent long‐standing topics in evolutionary biology. The Isthmus of Kra (IOK) divides Sundaland and Indochina and constitutes a poorly characterized terrestrial biogeographic transition. Here we looked at population genetic structure of three species that are distributed across the IOK to gain insights into the drivers that have shaped this transition and regional diversification patterns. Location: Tropical east Asia: Sundaland and Indochina. Taxa: Callosciurus caniceps, Tamiops mcclellandii, and Dremomys rufigenis‐ornatus species complex (Mammalia: Rodentia: Sciuridae). Methods: We generated complete mitogenomes and sequences of 11 nuclear intron fragments from 61 and 67 museum specimen samples, respectively. We assessed population structure by constructing Maximum Likelihood mitogenome phylogenies (IQTREE2), and nuclear marker haplowebs and conspecificity matrices (HaplowebMaker and CoMa). We estimated divergence dates through Bayesian phylogenetic inference (BEAST2) and put these results in the context of climatic and geological history. Results: High levels of mitochondrial and nuclear divergence were identified across the IOK in all three squirrels. Lineage turnover was consistent with the two major mammal species distribution transitions near the Kangar‐Pattani Line and at the juncture between the Thai‐Malay peninsula and the mainland. Divergence of mitochondrial lineages across Kra was estimated in the late Pliocene/ early Pleistocene for all three taxa. Older Miocene/Pliocene divergences were estimated within Indochina in D. rufigenis‐ornatus and T. mcclellandii, which were paraphyletic. Main Conclusions: Sundaic and Indochinese populations have possibly diverged in allopatric habitat refugia in or around mountains during periods of increased aridity and evergreen forest contraction. Ecological differences and/or topography might have influenced genetic differentiation during periods of rainforest expansion. Backgrounds: Milk of magnesia (MoM) has been reported to accelerate return of bowel function following surgery. However, there is insufficient evidence regarding the impact of MoM on postoperative recovery after colorectal surgery. We aimed to determine the impact of MoM on postoperative length of stay in patients undergoing colorectal surgery. Methods: All patients who underwent colorectal resection without an ileostomy between 2015 and 2018 were included. Patients were divided into two groups based on whether postoperative MoM (MoM) was administered or not, according to surgeons' prescribing preferences. Consecutive patients of surgeons who prescribe MoM were included in the MoM group, while consecutive patients of surgeons who prefer not to prescribe MoM served as the control group. Age, gender, preoperative comorbidities, surgical approach, length of stay, readmission, postoperative complications and mortality were evaluated and compared between the groups. Results: A total of 3292 patients were included; 523 (15.9%) patients were prescribed MoM. Patients in the MoM group were found to be significantly older, with higher BMI and ASA class, and more often undergoing operations for cancer resection or colostomy creations, than the control group. Postoperative complications were comparable between the groups. On multivariable linear regression, MoM use was associated with a 14.1% reduction in length of stay (MoM group 4 (2; 8), control group 5 (3; 8 P = 0.006)). Conclusion: MoM as adjunct medication in the postoperative period following colorectal surgery is associated with reduced length of stay, without an increase in postoperative complications. Lyme disease, the most commonly reported vector‐borne disease in the United States, is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. In the absence of a licensed vaccine, the prevention of Lyme disease relies heavily on limiting tick exposure. Methods for limiting tick exposure include personal protection measures such as repellent use, wearing protective clothing, avoiding areas where ticks may be present, bathing after exposure to tick habitat and performing regular tick checks. Public health officials typically recommend all these personal protection measures; however, there is limited evidence to promote one behaviour or practice over another. The focus of this article is to review available literature that examines the effectiveness of recommended personal protection measures to prevent Lyme and other Ixodes‐transmitted diseases in humans. Articles included in this review were identified through Google Scholar and PubMed searches using specific search terms. We identified over 56,000 articles using Google Scholar and PubMed searches. Of those, 16 studies fit our criteria for inclusion and were reviewed in their entirety. Among the personal protection measures evaluated, no intervention was predominantly or consistently effective across studies, demonstrating that, currently, there is no single best method for primary prevention of Ixodes‐transmitted diseases in the United States. Frequently recommended practices such as tick checks, repellent use and protective clothing had mixed results across studies. Study design differences limited comparability among studies, and sample sizes for these studies may have been too small to detect statistically significant results even if a prevention method was effective. Though many of the reviewed personal protection measures are frequently recommended to the public, limited evidence demonstrates their ability to prevent tick‐borne disease. Hyporheic exchange influences hydrologic transport and water quality through transient storage, which extends solute transit time, and leads to mixing of surface water and groundwater. Despite its importance, estimating the extent and spatiotemporal variability of the hyporheic zone remains challenging due to limitations in assessing the subsurface with discrete point‐scale sampling. Analysis of time‐lapse electrical resistivity (ER) data from tracer studies has shown potential to ameliorate such limitations. However, its utility in objectively delimiting hyporheic extent and quantifying changes in surface‐groundwater exchange has been impeded by reliance on qualitative analysis of hyporheic extent or the use of a priori assumptions about data quality and signal strength. This study applies a novel unsupervised clustering method to time‐lapse ER models derived from a benchmark dataset collected throughout baseflow recession in a mountain stream. We demonstrate that unsupervised clustering of inverted ER model time series can delimit hyporheic extent by distinguishing solute transport signals from noisy background inversions and identify functional zones defined by unique transport characteristics. We found that the structure of these zones was stable even as discharge changed by an order of magnitude, likely due to morphological constraints in this steep, narrow valley. Compared to traditional methods utilizing a priori thresholds to delimit hyporheic extent, clustering is robust to unintentional variations in tracer breakthrough curves that are typical of field‐based studies. Therefore, clustering of inverted ER models represents a more robust and data‐driven functional zonation representation of hyporheic exchange than has been possible with point‐scale sampling or transport modelling, which usually assumes a single well‐mixed hyporheic zone. Historically, public health surveillance for Lyme disease has required clinical follow‐up on positive laboratory reports for the purpose of case classification. In areas with sustained high incidence of the disease, this resource‐intensive activity yields a limited benefit to public health practice. A range of burden‐reducing strategies have been implemented in many states, creating inconsistencies that limit the ability to decipher trends. Laboratory‐based surveillance, or surveillance based solely on positive laboratory reports without follow‐up for clinical information on positive laboratory reports, emerged as a feasible alternative to improve standardization in already high‐incidence areas. To inform expectations of a laboratory‐based surveillance model, we conducted a retrospective analysis of Lyme disease data collected during 2012–2018 from 10 high‐incidence states. The number of individuals with laboratory evidence of infection ranged from 1302 to 20,994 per state and year. On average, 55% of those were ultimately classified as confirmed or probable cases (range: 29%–86%). Among all individuals with positive laboratory evidence, 18% (range: 2%–37%) were determined to be 'not a case' upon investigation and 23% (range: 2%–52%) were classified as suspect cases due to lack of associated clinical information and thus were not reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The number of reported cases under a laboratory‐based approach to surveillance in high‐incidence states using recommended two‐tier testing algorithms is likely to be, on average, 1.2 times higher (range: 0.6–1.8 times) than what was reported to CDC during 2012–2018. A laboratory‐based surveillance approach for high‐incidence states will improve standardization and reduce burden on public health systems, allowing public health resources to focus on prevention messaging, exploration of novel prevention strategies and alternative data sources to yield information on the epidemiology of Lyme disease. The interrogation of metabolic parameters like pH in live‐cell experiments using optical super‐resolution microscopy (SRM) remains challenging. This is due to a paucity of appropriate metabolic probes enabling live‐cell SRM‐based sensing. Here, ultrasmall fluorescent core–shell aluminosilicate nanoparticle sensors (FAM–ATTO647N aC′ dots) that covalently encapsulate a reference dye (ATTO647N) in the core and a pH‐sensing moiety (FAM) in the shell are introduced. Only the reference dye exhibits optical blinking enabling live‐cell stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM). Using data from cells incubated for 60 min with FAM–ATTO647N aC′ dots, pixelated information from total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy‐based ratiometric sensing can be combined with that from STORM‐based localizations via the blinking reference dye in order to enhance the resolution of ratiometric pH sensor maps beyond the optical diffraction limit. A nearest‐neighbor interpolation methodology is developed to quantitatively address particle compositional heterogeneity as determined by separate single‐particle fluorescence imaging methods. When combined with STORM‐based estimates of the number of particles per vesicle, vesicle size, and vesicular motion as a whole, this analysis provides detailed live‐cell spatial and functional information, paving the way to a comprehensive mapping and understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution of nanoparticle processing by cells important, e.g., for applications in nanomedicine. This study integrated spatially distributed field observations and soil thermal models to constrain the impact of frozen ground on snowmelt partitioning and streamflow generation in an alpine catchment within the Niwot Ridge Long‐Term Ecological Research site, Colorado, USA. The study area was comprised of two contrasting hillslopes with notable differences in topography, snow depth and plant community composition. Time‐lapse electrical resistivity surveys and soil thermal models enabled extension of discrete soil moisture and temperature measurements to incorporate landscape variability at scales and depths not possible with point measurements alone. Specifically, heterogenous snowpack thickness (~0–4 m) and soil volumetric water content between hillslopes (~0.1–0.45) strongly influenced the depths of seasonal frost, and the antecedent soil moisture available to form pore ice prior to freezing. Variable frost depths and antecedent soil moisture conditions were expected to create a patchwork of differing snowmelt infiltration rates and flowpaths. However, spikes in soil temperature and volumetric water content, as well as decreases in subsurface electrical resistivity revealed snowmelt infiltration across both hillslopes that coincided with initial decreases in snow water equivalent and early increases in streamflow. Soil temperature, soil moisture and electrical resistivity data from both wet and dry hillslopes showed that initial increases in streamflow occurred prior to deep soil water flux. Temporal lags between snowmelt infiltration and deeper percolation suggested that the lateral movement of water through the unsaturated zone was an important driver of early streamflow generation. These findings provide the type of process‐based information needed to bridge gaps in scale and populate physically based cryohydrologic models to investigate subsurface hydrology and biogeochemical transport in soils that freeze seasonally. Summary: Tickborne diseases are an increasing public health problem in the northeastern USA. Bait boxes that apply acaricide to rodents have been shown in small field studies to significantly reduce abundance of Ixodes scapularis ticks as well as their pathogen infection rates in treated areas. The effectiveness of this intervention for preventing human tickborne diseases (TBDs) has not been demonstrated. During 2012–2016, TickNET collaborators conducted a randomized, blinded, placebo‐controlled trial among 622 Connecticut households. Each household received active (containing fipronil wick) or placebo (empty) bait boxes in their yards over two consecutive years. Information on tick encounters and TBDs among household members was collected through biannual surveys. Nymphal ticks were collected from a subset of 100 properties during spring at baseline, during treatment, and in the year post‐intervention. Demographic and property characteristics did not differ between treatment groups. There were no significant differences post‐intervention between treatment groups with respect to tick density or pathogen infection rates, nor for tick encounters or TBDs among household members. We found no evidence that rodent‐targeted bait boxes disrupt pathogen transmission cycles or significantly reduce household risk of tick exposure or TBDs. Tick bite prevention practices, knowledge of Lyme disease (LD) symptoms and transmission, and patterns of LD diagnoses among Hispanic persons have been reported but not comprehensively evaluated. In 2014, CDC examined questions from a prospective nationwide survey of U.S. Hispanic adults conducted via the Offerwise QueOpinas panel regarding ticks and LD. From October to November, a total of 2,649 surveys were released and 1,006 completed surveys returned. Overall, 44% of respondents reported routinely practising at least one form of personal protection against tick bites, and wearing repellent was the most commonly reported method (29%). Approximately 6% of respondents reported a tick bite for either themselves or someone in their household during the previous 12 months. An individual or household diagnosis of LD in the previous year was reported by 2% of respondents, with the highest proportion of diagnoses reported by respondents from high LD incidence states. The annual incidence of healthcare provider‐diagnosed LD in the survey population was higher than national surveillance estimates for reported LD among U.S. Hispanic persons during 2000–2013. As annual incidence of LD continues to increase, it is important to ensure equitable access to information about LD, including disease transmission, manifestations, and prevention recommendations. The Niwot Ridge and Green Lakes Valley (NWT) long‐term ecological research (LTER) site collects environmental observations spanning both alpine and subalpine regimes. The first observations began in 1952 and have since expanded to nearly 300 available datasets over an area of 99 km2 within the north‐central Colorado Rocky Mountains that include hydrological (n = 101), biological (n = 79), biogeochemical (n = 62), and geographical (n = 56) observations. The NWT LTER database is well suited to support hydrologic investigations that require long‐term and interdisciplinary data sets. Experimentation and data collection at the NWT LTER are designed to characterize ecological responses of high‐mountain environments to changes in climate, nutrients, and water availability. In addition to the continuation of the many legacy NWT datasets, expansion of the breadth and utility of the NWT LTER database is driven by new initiatives including (a) a catchment‐scale sensor network of soil moisture, temperature, humidity, and snow‐depth observations to understand hydrologic connectivity and (b) snow‐albedo alteration experiments using black sand to evaluate the effects of snow‐disappearance on ecosystems. Together, these observational and experimental datasets provide a substantial foundation for hydrologic studies seeking to understand and predict changes to catchment and local‐scale process interactions. Entomological measures have long served as proxies for human risk of Lyme disease (LD) and other tickborne diseases (TBDs) in endemic areas of the United States, despite conflicting results regarding the correlation between these measures and human disease outcomes. Using data from a previous TBD intervention study in Connecticut, Maryland and New York, we evaluated whether human‐tick encounters can serve as an accurate proxy for risk of TBDs in areas where LD and other Ixodes scapularis‐transmitted infections are common. Among 2,590 households consisting of 4,210 individuals, experiencing a tick encounter was associated with an increased risk of both self‐reported (RR = 3.17, 95% CI: 2.05, 4.91) and verified TBD (RR = 2.60, 95% CI: 1.39, 4.84) at the household level. Household characteristics associated with experiencing any tick encounter were residence in Connecticut (aOR = 1.86, 95% CI: 1.38, 2.51) or New York (aOR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.25, 2.22), head of household having a graduate level education (aOR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.04, 2.08), owning a pet (aOR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.46, 2.23) and a property size of 2 acres or larger (aOR = 2.30, 95% CI: 1.42, 3.70). Results for individual characteristics were similar to those for households. Future prevention studies in LD endemic areas should consider using human‐tick encounters as a robust proxy for TBD risk. Due to widespread manipulation of nitrogen (N), much research has focused on processes controlling the fate of anthropogenic N in streams. Yet, in a variety of oligotrophic systems, N fixed by periphyton is a significant driver of ecosystem metabolism. Due to difficulties partitioning allochthonous and autochthonous sources, there is limited information regarding how the latter is processed. Autochthonous N may be particularly important in alpine, arid, or polar environments. We test the hypothesis that the availability of remineralized autochthonous N is controlled by connectivity between the hyporheic zone and main channel due to the contrasting biogeochemical functions of benthic autotrophs (including N‐fixing Nostoc) and hyporheic heterotrophs in an intermittent Antarctic stream. There, we collected surface water and hyporheic water concurrently at 4–6 h intervals over a 32.5 h period during one flow season and opportunistically throughout a second. Hyporheic water had 7 to 30 times greater nitrate‐N concentrations relative to surface water across all flow conditions. In contrast, ammonium concentrations were generally lower, although similar among locations. Additionally, nitrate in hyporheic water was positively correlated with silica, an indicator of hyporheic residence time. A laboratory assay confirmed prior inferences that hyporheic microbial communities possess the functional potential to perform nitrification. Together, these findings suggest that remineralized autochthonous N accumulates in the hyporheic zone even as streamflow varies and likely subsidizes stream N availability, which supports prior inferences from N stable isotope data at this site. These results highlight the importance of hyporheic connectivity in controlling autochthonous N cycling and availability in streams. To overcome this challenge, we studied a stream in Antarctica that has very little N from external sources, but has abundant algae that can fix N. By sampling water repeatedly, we found that N from stream microbes can be recycled and accumulate in the streambed. This recycled N could return to surface water where it is removed and utilized by algae that cannot fix their own N. Our study demonstrates that N inputs from stream algae can influence the amount and type of N that moves downstream, even where streamflow changes quickly. Many research and monitoring networks in recent decades have provided publicly available data documenting environmental and ecological change, but little is known about the status of efforts to synthesize this information across networks. We convened a working group to assess ongoing and potential cross‐network synthesis research and outline opportunities and challenges for the future, focusing on the US‐based research network (the US Long‐Term Ecological Research network, LTER) and monitoring network (the National Ecological Observatory Network, NEON). LTER‐NEON cross‐network research synergies arise from the potentials for LTER measurements, experiments, models, and observational studies to provide context and mechanisms for interpreting NEON data, and for NEON measurements to provide standardization and broad scale coverage that complement LTER studies. Initial cross‐network syntheses at co‐located sites in the LTER and NEON networks are addressing six broad topics: how long‐term vegetation change influences C fluxes; how detailed remotely sensed data reveal vegetation structure and function; aquatic‐terrestrial connections of nutrient cycling; ecosystem response to soil biogeochemistry and microbial processes; population and species responses to environmental change; and disturbance, stability and resilience. This initial study offers exciting potentials for expanded cross‐network syntheses involving multiple long‐term ecosystem processes at regional or continental scales. These potential syntheses could provide a pathway for the broader scientific community, beyond LTER and NEON, to engage in cross‐network science. These examples also apply to many other research and monitoring networks in the US and globally, and can guide scientists and research administrators in promoting broad‐scale research that supports resource management and environmental policy. Polymer‐based materials hold great potential for use in thermoelectric applications but are limited by their poor electrical properties. Through a combination of solution‐shearing deposition and directionally applied solvent treatments, poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) thin films with metallic‐like conductivities can be obtained with high power factors in excess of 800 µW m−1 K−2. X‐ray scattering and absorption data indicate that structural alignment of PEDOT chains and larger‐sized domains are responsible for the enhanced electrical conductivity. We conducted a cross‐sectional study to evaluate associations between pet characteristics and behaviours and risk of tick encounters among pets and pet owners. We defined a tick encounter as ticks found crawling on or attached to a pet or pet owner. Information about pet characteristics, interactions between owners and pets, and tick encounters were captured through an online survey. Associations were evaluated using univariate and multivariable analyses. In univariate analysis, walking dogs only on pavement reduced risk of tick encounter among owners (prevalence ratio (PR) = 0.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.30, 0.84). Having a dog or cat that hunted small animals increased risk of tick encounter among owners (PR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.30, 2.13; PR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.05, 2.34, respectively). No direct interactions between owners and pets (e.g., pets sleeping on owners' beds) were associated with increased risk of tick encounters among owners. In multivariable analysis among dog owners, having a pet with a tick encounter within the last six months was associated with increased risk of owner tick encounter (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 4.17, 95% CI: 2.94, 5.92); in addition, having a dog that hunts small animals was associated with increased risk of owner tick encounter (aOR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.25, 3.11). These results suggest that the location of pet‐owner interactions may be more important than the type of interactions. Pet owners should avoid tick habitat with pets; when that is not possible, proper use of tick preventive products for pets, wearing repellents by owners and conducting tick checks for both pets and owners is critical for prevention of tick encounters and tick‐borne disease. In plants, the vegetative to reproductive phase transition (termed bolting in Arabidopsis) generally precedes age‐dependent leaf senescence (LS). Many studies describe a temporal link between bolting time and LS, as plants that bolt early, senesce early, and plants that bolt late, senesce late. The molecular mechanisms underlying this relationship are unknown and are potentially agriculturally important, as they may allow for the development of crops that can overcome early LS caused by stress‐related early‐phase transition. We hypothesized that leaf gene expression changes occurring in synchrony with bolting were regulating LS. ARABIDOPSIS TRITHORAX (ATX) enzymes are general methyltransferases that regulate the adult vegetative to reproductive phase transition. We generated an atx1, atx3, and atx4 (atx1,3,4) triple T‐DNA insertion mutant that displays both early bolting and early LS. This mutant was used in an RNA‐seq time‐series experiment to identify gene expression changes in rosette leaves that are likely associated with bolting. By comparing the early bolting mutant to vegetative WT plants of the same age, we were able to generate a list of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that change expression with bolting as the plants age. We trimmed the list by intersection with publicly available WT datasets, which removed genes from our DEG list that were atx1,3,4 specific. The resulting 398 bolting‐associated genes (BAGs) are differentially expressed in a mature rosette leaf at bolting. The BAG list contains many well‐characterized LS regulators (ORE1, WRKY45, NAP, WRKY28), and GO analysis revealed enrichment for LS and LS‐related processes. Acid deposition associated with precipitation is an ecological problem that has affected watersheds in industrialized parts of North America and Europe, but remote landscapes, such as the Colorado Rocky Mountains, have also been impacted. The deposition of strong acids, including nitric and sulfuric acids, has decreased substantially over the past 30 years at Niwot Ridge, a high‐alpine watershed of Colorado. The pH of precipitation has followed these declines and has increased to ~5.5. Meanwhile, NH4+, another important constituent of acid/base balance, and a fertilizing nutrient, has more than doubled in precipitation between 1984 and 2017. A statistical model of long‐term water chemistry concentrations and loads revealed a variety of trends in watershed export of acids and bases, some of which were unexpected, and remain unexplained. For example, despite declining sulfate deposition, sulfate export has increased. On the other hand, watershed nitrate export has remained constant despite decreases in atmospheric deposition, while watershed NH4+ export has increased, albeit minimally, relative to total nitrogen export. Watershed pH and alkalinity appear to have stabilized in response to decreased acid precipitation, which may be explained by geochemical processes, such as carbonate weathering. Overall, in this high‐alpine watershed, atmospheric deposition is trending toward preindustrial conditions, and there is a need to conduct targeted, process‐based studies to determine the mechanisms underlying these trends. Recruitment variability is poorly understood for Bering Sea crab stocks. The nearshore area in southwest Bristol Bay (Alaska, USA) is hypothesized as having historically (i.e., prior to ~ 1980) been the most important spawning ground for Bristol Bay red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) because post‐larvae are thought to have been most likely to reach optimal settlement habitat along the Alaska Peninsula when hatched from this area as part of an endless‐belt reproductive strategy. We coupled a biophysical and oceanographic circulation model to test this hypothesis, investigate larval connectivity of more recent female spatial distributions, and evaluate the importance of climate variability on larval advection trajectories. Predicted settlement success varied through changes in larval pelagic duration and oceanographic circulation patterns: Shorter advective distance was associated with warmer conditions, causing higher rates of local retention relative to cold conditions. Contrary to earlier models, most larvae hatched in southwest Bristol Bay were advected offshore away from good habitat, whereas larvae hatched in central and nearshore Bristol Bay were retained in or advected to good habitat along the Alaska Peninsula. Our results suggest contemporary spatial distributions can supply settlement‐competent larvae to nurseries along the Alaska Peninsula and that under certain conditions, larvae may reach the Pribilof Islands when hatched from southwest Bristol Bay. Background and objective: Normative values for HAA—a quantitative, CT‐based measure of subclinical ILD—in healthy adults are needed to improve interpretability in clinical and research settings. Methods: HAA was measured on full‐lung CT in 3110 participants in the MESA study. Clinical prediction models were developed using a healthy never‐smoker subset with normal spirometry (n = 696). RMSE on cross‐validation was used as the primary criterion for model selection. Parametric and non‐parametric methods were considered. z‐Scores were calculated for the entire study sample. Associations between z‐scores and several ILD features were estimated. Results: In the healthy never‐smoker subset, the mean age was 69 years with a range of 54–93 years. The median HAA was 4.3% with a range of 2.7–17.8%. Linear regression had better predictive performance than other methods. The final model included race, height, weight, age and sex. The standard error of the estimate was 1.62 with a cross‐validated RMSE of 1.64 and an adjusted R2 of 0.139. z‐Scores were associated with several ILD outcomes in adjusted models, including ILA (OR: 1.40 per z‐unit; 95% CI: 1.30, 1.52), exertional dyspnoea (OR: 1.08 per z‐unit; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.15) and FVC (expected increase per z‐unit: −2.49; 95% CI: −2.95, − 2.03). Conclusion: We present a reference equation and z‐scores to define expected values of HAA on full‐lung CT to aid HAA interpretation in middle‐aged and older adults. An estimated 300,000 cases of Lyme disease occur in the United States annually. Disseminated Lyme disease may result in carditis, arthritis, facial palsy or meningitis, sometimes requiring hospitalization. We describe the epidemiology and cost of Lyme disease‐related hospitalizations. We analysed 2005–2014 data from the Truven Health Analytics MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters Databases to identify inpatient records associated with Lyme disease based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD‐9‐CM) codes. We estimated the annual number and median cost of Lyme disease‐related hospitalizations in the United States in persons under 65 years of age. Costs were adjusted to reflect 2016 dollars. Of 20,983,165 admission records contained in the inpatient databases during the study period, 2,823 (0.01%) met inclusion criteria for Lyme disease‐related hospitalizations. Over half of the identified records contained an ICD‐9‐CM code for meningitis (n = 614), carditis (n = 429), facial palsy (n = 400) or arthritis (n = 377). Nearly 60% of hospitalized patients were male. The median cost per Lyme disease‐related hospitalization was $11,688 (range: $140–$323,613). The manifestation with the highest median cost per stay was carditis ($17,461), followed by meningitis ($15,177), arthritis ($13,012) and facial palsy ($10,491). Median cost was highest among the 15‐ to 19‐year‐old age group ($12,991). Admissions occurring in January had the highest median cost ($13,777) for all study years. Based on extrapolation to the U.S. population, we estimate that 2,196 Lyme disease‐related hospitalizations in persons under 65 years of age occur annually with an estimated annual cost of $25,826,237. Lyme disease is usually treated in an outpatient setting; however, some patients with Lyme disease require hospitalization, underscoring the need for effective prevention methods to mitigate these serious cases. As atmospheric dust deposition continues to increase across the southwestern United States, it has the potential to alter ecosystem productivity and structure by delivering nutrients, base cations, and pollutants to remote mountain sites. Due to the sparse distribution of dust monitoring sites, open questions remain about the spatial and temporal variability of dust fluxes and composition across mountainous terrain. We present a 1 year (November 2017 to November 2018) record of seasonal dust fluxes and composition from an elevation transect across the Colorado Front Range extending from the urban plains to the remote alpine. At all nine sites, dust was enriched in the essential nutrient phosphorus and the metals copper, zinc, lead, and cadmium, elements that are enriched in dust deposited at sites across the Rocky Mountain West. We observed a seasonal pattern in dust composition, with the highest concentrations of zinc and cadmium during the summer, when back trajectory modeling suggested a greater contribution of dust from local urban and agricultural regions to the east of the collection sites. During the summer, there was also a trend of higher dust fluxes at lower elevations; dust fluxes ranged from 18.9 ± 0.1 g m−2 yr−1 on the plains to 5.9 ± 0.2 g m−2 yr−1 in the alpine. Our results suggest that urban and agricultural land east of the Colorado Front Range is an important source of nutrients and pollutants to all elevations of the mountain range. Background: Long work hours may be associated with adverse outcomes, including cardiovascular disease. We investigated cross‐sectional associations of current work hours with coronary artery calcification (CAC). Methods: Participants (n = 3046; 54.6% men) were from the Multi‐Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. The number of hours worked in all jobs was obtained by questionnaire and CAC from computed tomography. The probability of a positive CAC score was modeled using log‐binomial regression. Positive scores were modeled using analysis of covariance and linear regression. Results: Sixteen percent of the sample worked over 50 hours per week. The overall geometric mean CAC score was 5.2 ± 10.0; 40% had positive scores. In fully‐adjusted models, prevalence ratios were less than 40 hours: 1.00 (confidence interval [CI]: 0.88‐1.12), 40:(ref), 41 to 49:1.13 (CI: 0.99‐1.30), and ≥50:1.07 (CI: 0.94‐1.23) and longer current work hours were not associated with higher mean CAC scores (<40:56.0 [CI: 47.3‐66.3], 40:57.8 [CI: 45.6‐73.3], 41 to 49:59.2 [CI: 45.2‐77.6], ≥50:51.2 [CI: 40.5‐64.8]; P =.686). Tick‐borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is a potentially serious spirochetal infection caused by certain species of Borrelia and acquired through the bite of Ornithodoros ticks. In 2017, Austin Public Health, Austin, TX, identified five cases of febrile illness among employees who worked in caves. A cross‐sectional serosurvey and interview were conducted for 44 employees at eight organizations that conduct cave‐related work. Antibodies against TBRF‐causing Borrelia were detected in the serum of five participants, four of whom reported recent illness. Seropositive employees entered significantly more caves (Median 25 [SD: 15] versus Median 4 [SD: 16], p = 0.04) than seronegative employees. Six caves were entered more frequently by seropositive employees posing a potentially high risk. Several of these caves were in public use areas and were opened for tours. In Maryland, Lyme disease (LD) is the most widely reported tickborne disease. All laboratories and healthcare providers are required to report LD cases to the local health department. Given the large volume of LD reports, the nuances of diagnosing and reporting LD, and the effort required for investigations by local health department staff, surveillance for LD is burdensome and subject to underreporting. To determine the degree to which misclassification occurs in Maryland, we reviewed medical records for a sample of LD reports from 2009. We characterized what proportion of suspected and "not a case" reports could be reclassified as confirmed or probable once additional information was obtained from medical record review, explored the reasons for misclassification, and determined multipliers for a more accurate number of LD cases. We reviewed medical records for reports originally classified as suspected (n = 44) and "not a case" (n = 92). Of these 136 records, 31 (23%) suspected cases and "not a case" reports were reclassified. We calculated multipliers and applied them to the case counts from 2009, and estimate an additional 269 confirmed and probable cases, a 13.3% increase. Reasons for misclassification fell into three general categories: lack of clinical or diagnostic information from the provider; surveillance process errors; and incomplete information provided on laboratory reports. These multipliers can be used to calculate a better approximation of the true number of LD cases in Maryland, but these multipliers only account for underreporting due to misclassification, and do not account for cases that are not reported at all (e.g., LD diagnoses based on erythema migrans alone that are not reported) or for cases that are not investigated. Knowing that misclassification of cases occurs during the existing LD surveillance process underscores the complexities of LD surveillance, which further reinforces the need to find alternative approaches to LD surveillance. Abstract: Soil‐mantled pole‐facing hillslopes on Earth tend to be steeper, wetter, and have more vegetation cover compared with adjacent equator‐facing hillslopes. These and other slope aspect controls are often the consequence of feedbacks among hydrologic, ecologic, pedogenic, and geomorphic processes triggered by spatial variations in mean annual insolation. In this paper we review the state of knowledge on slope aspect controls of Critical Zone (CZ) processes using the latitudinal and elevational dependence of topographic asymmetry as a motivating observation. At relatively low latitudes and elevations, pole‐facing hillslopes tend to be steeper. At higher latitudes and elevations this pattern reverses. We reproduce this pattern using an empirical model based on parsimonious functions of latitude, an aridity index, mean‐annual temperature, and slope gradient. Using this empirical model and the literature as guides, we present a conceptual model for the slope‐aspect‐driven CZ feedbacks that generate asymmetry in water‐limited and temperature‐limited end‐member cases. In this conceptual model the dominant factor driving slope aspect differences at relatively low latitudes and elevations is the difference in mean‐annual soil moisture. The dominant factor at higher latitudes and elevations is temperature limitation on vegetation growth. In water‐limited cases, we propose that higher mean‐annual soil moisture on pole‐facing hillslopes drives higher soil production rates, higher water storage potential, more vegetation cover, faster dust deposition, and lower erosional efficiency in a positive feedback. At higher latitudes and elevations, pole‐facing hillslopes tend to have less vegetation cover, greater erosional efficiency, and gentler slopes, thus reversing the pattern of asymmetry found at lower latitudes and elevations. Our conceptual model emphasizes the linkages among short‐ and long‐timescale processes and across CZ sub‐disciplines; it also points to opportunities to further understand how CZ processes interact. Summary: The value of using diagnostic codes in Lyme disease (LD) surveillance in highly endemic states has not been well studied. Surveys of healthcare facilities in Maryland (MD) and New York (NY) regarding coding practices were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using diagnostic codes as a potential method for LD surveillance. Most respondents indicated that their practice utilized electronic medical records (53%) and processed medical/billing claims electronically (74%). Most facilities were able to search office visits associated with specific ICD‐9‐CM and CPT codes (74% and 73%, respectively); no discernible differences existed between the healthcare facilities in both states. These codes were most commonly assigned by the practitioner (82%), and approximately 70% of respondents indicated that these codes were later validated by administrative staff. These results provide evidence for the possibility of using diagnostic codes in LD surveillance. Summary: In Maryland, Lyme disease (LD) is a reportable disease and all laboratories and healthcare providers are required to report to the local health department. Given the volume of LD reports and effort required for investigation, surveillance for LD is burdensome and subject to underreporting. We explored the utility of International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (administrative) codes for use with LD surveillance. We aimed to collect the administrative codes for a 10% sample of 2009 LD reports (n = 474) from 292 facilities stratified by case classification (confirmed, probable, suspected and not a case). Sixty‐three per cent (n = 184) of facilities responded to the survey, and 341 different administrative codes were obtained for 91% (n = 430) of sampled reports. The administrative code for Lyme disease (088.81) was the most commonly reported code (133/430 patients) among sampled reports; while it was used for 62 of 151 (41%) confirmed cases, it was also used for 48 of 192 (25%) not a case reports (sensitivity 41% and specificity 73%). A combination of nine codes was developed with sensitivity of 74% and specificity of 37% when compared to not a case reports. We conclude that the administrative code for LD alone has low ability to identify LD cases in Maryland. Grouping certain codes improved sensitivity, but our results indicate that administrative codes alone are not a viable surveillance alternative for a disease with complex manifestations such as LD. Summary: Despite the mandatory nature of Lyme disease (LD) reporting in New York State (NYS), it is believed that only a fraction of the LD cases diagnosed annually are reported to public health authorities. Lack of complete LD case reporting generally stems from (i) lack of report of provider‐diagnosed cases where supportive laboratory testing is not ordered or results are negative (i.e. provider underreporting) and (ii) incomplete case information (clinical laboratory reporting only with no accompanying clinical information) such that cases are considered ‘suspect’ and not included in national and statewide case counts (i.e. case misclassification). In an attempt to better understand LD underreporting in NYS, a two‐part study was conducted in 2011 using surveillance data from three counties. Case misclassification was assessed by obtaining medical records on suspect cases and reclassifying according to the surveillance case definition. To assess provider underreporting, lists of patients for whom ICD‐9‐CM code 088.81 (LD) had been used were reported to NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH). These lists were matched to the NYSDOH case reporting system, and medical records were requested on patients not previously reported; cases were then classified according to the case definition. When including both provider underreporting and case misclassification, approximately 20% (range 18.4–24.6%) more LD cases were identified in the three‐county study area than were originally reported through standard surveillance. The additional cases represent a minimum percentage of unreported cases; the true percentage of unreported cases is likely higher. Unreported cases were more likely to have a history of erythema migrans (EM) rash and were more likely to be young paediatric cases. Results of the study support the assertion that LD cases are underreported in NYS. Initiatives to increase reporting should highlight the importance of reporting clinically diagnosed EM and be targeted to those providers most likely to diagnose LD, specifically providers treating paediatric patients. Summary: Lyme disease (LD), anaplasmosis, babesiosis and other tick‐borne diseases (TBDs) attributed to Ixodes ticks are thought to be widely underreported in the United States. To identify TBD cases diagnosed in 2009, but not reported to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), diagnostic and procedural billing codes suggestive of tick‐borne diseases were used to select medical charts for retrospective review in medical facilities serving residents of a highly endemic county in Minnesota. Of 444 illness events, 352 (79%) were not reported. Of these, 102 (29%) met confirmed or probable surveillance case criteria, including 91 (26%) confirmed LD cases with physician‐diagnosed erythema migrans (EM). For each confirmed and probable LD, probable anaplasmosis and confirmed babesiosis case reported to MDH in 2009, 2.8, 1.3, 1.2 and 1.0 cases were likely diagnosed, respectively. Summary: We examined whether pet ownership increased the risk for tick encounters and tickborne disease among residents of three Lyme disease‐endemic states as a nested cohort within a randomized controlled trial. Information about pet ownership, use of tick control for pets, property characteristics, tick encounters and human tickborne disease were captured through surveys, and associations were assessed using univariate and multivariable analyses. Pet‐owning households had 1.83 times the risk (95% CI = 1.53, 2.20) of finding ticks crawling on and 1.49 times the risk (95% CI = 1.20, 1.84) of finding ticks attached to household members compared to households without pets. This large evaluation of pet ownership, human tick encounters and tickborne diseases shows that pet owners, whether of cats or dogs, are at increased risk of encountering ticks and suggests that pet owners are at an increased risk of developing tickborne disease. Pet owners should be made aware of this risk and be reminded to conduct daily tick checks of all household members, including the pets, and to consult their veterinarian regarding effective tick control products. Core Ideas: Rainfall intensification increased deep percolation in tilled and no‐till systems.Rainfall intensification increased deep soil water content in both cropping systems.A bromide tracer was detected at 1.2‐m depth sooner in no‐till than tilled systems.The effect of rainfall intensification on surface soil moisture varied seasonally. Globally, the proportion of total rainfall occurring as extreme events is increasing, which may have consequences for agriculture. In the US Midwest, we conducted a 234‐d manipulative experiment in 16 paired plots where we increased the proportion of rain falling in extreme events on tilled and no‐till cropping systems. We compared the effects of larger, less frequent rain events ("intensified" rainfall) vs. smaller, more frequent rain events ("normal" rainfall) on soil water content and deep percolation. The effect of intensified rainfall on the volumetric water content (VWC) of soil at the 10‐cm depth during the experiment varied seasonally: in spring, intensified rainfall decreased the average VWC at the 10‐cm depth by 0.05 ± 0.01 cm3 cm−3 compared with normal rainfall, but in summer and fall, it had no effect. In soil at the 100‐cm depth, VWC declined during the summer in normal but not intensified plots. A surface‐added Br− tracer was detected and peaked earlier in soil water at 120 cm under intensified rainfall vs. normal rainfall (by 6 ± 3 and 74 ± 33 d, respectively) regardless of tillage, although it was detected sooner in no‐till than tilled systems (by 9 ± 3 d). Also, less Br− was recovered in soil under intensified (8 ± 8% of total Br− added) vs. normal rainfall (21 ± 3%). Our results suggest that rainfall intensification will increase deep percolation and deep soil water content in cropping systems regardless of tillage. Abstract: Due to relatively low charge‐carrier mobilities in organic materials, high operational voltages often have to be applied and result in severe limitations. While it has been reported that elastic polymeric dielectrics, containing a very low ion concentration, are able to overcome this bottleneck, a systematic study on the working mechanisms and their implications for sensors is still missing. Due to the possibility to form a double‐layer capacitor while maintaining high insulating properties, such dielectrics enable stable low‐voltage devices, giving access to high current output and high on/off ratio even below 0.5 V. Field‐effect transistor devices are used to characterize this novel class of materials and to unravel their working mechanisms. To address their capability for sensors, a proof‐of‐concept experiment is performed, i.e., photoresponse is characterized and the field‐effect dependence is analyzed. Stable low‐voltage operation is a crucial issue, especially for biosensor applications which typically operate in physiological liquids and are limited by the small electrochemical window of water. The variables considered include diet composition and the dietary parameters of ingested mass, prey richness, trophic diversity and trophic niche breadth. The diet of the species algae and plant debris, planktonic Crustacea, Ephemeropta and Plecoptera nymphs, among others.

Global change drivers influence ecological processes at multiple scales and manifest across most of Earth as changes in biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, infectious disease incidence, and ecohydrology. Small-scale investigations provide compelling evidence of specific effects of global change on local systems, but are of limited use in modeling complex ecological processes at continental-to-global scales. Long-term observations distributed across a diversity of habitat types are needed to improve the ability to forecast ecological change at large spatial and temporal scales. This special issue introduces the Terrestrial Observation System ( TOS) of the National Ecological Observatory Network ( NEON), a long-term, continental-scale ecological research platform designed to deliver these large-scale datasets. The TOS measures biodiversity of key biota (soil microbes, insects, plants, small mammals), ecosystem productivity and biogeochemistry, infectious disease dynamics, phenology, and population dynamics. The articles in this special issue describe the scientific rationale for the sampling designs of the TOS, including an overview of protocols, locations, and frequencies of measurements. The science designs are a culmination of design requirements scoped by NEON and the National Science Foundation, best available practices put forth by the scientific community, input from technical working groups, and consideration of logistical and financial constraints by NEON staff. Within each site, measurements have been collocated to the extent possible to optimize linkages among different sampling elements. Integrated analyses of terrestrial observations with sensor-based, imagery, and remote-sensing data collected by other NEON subsystems can facilitate scaling of measured parameters to larger spatial and temporal scales. NEON is designed to collect data for 30 years, and make these data freely available on a public data portal (). Samples and specimens will be archived and available to the scientific community upon request. The open access approach to the Observatory will provide users with the resources necessary to map, understand, and predict the effects of global change drivers on ecological processes at a continental scale. Background: A previous case report of West Nile virus (WNV) illness during pregnancy suggested that WNV could be a cause of congenital defects. We performed a prospective, longitudinal cohort study of pregnant women with WNV illness to increase our knowledge of the effects of WNV illness during pregnancy. Methods: Participants were enrolled in 2005 to 2008 from pregnant women with serologically confirmed WNV illness reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Comparison was made to WNV-uninfected women, matched on maternal age and enrollment month. Pregnancy and newborn data were collected; cord blood WNV serology was obtained. Pediatric exams and the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-Third Edition (Bayley-III) were performed. Results: Twenty-eight WNV-infected mothers and 25 WNV-uninfected mothers participated. Maternal demographics were similar except for a higher rate of planned pregnancies, education, and household income in the WNV-uninfected mothers. There were no differences in pregnancy and delivery characteristics except that infected mothers had a higher incidence of febrile illnesses and used more medications. Birth weight, length, head circumference, and rate of congenital malformations were similar in babies born to WNV-infected and -uninfected mothers. Follow-up physical exams were generally normal. The Bayley-III assessments, available for 17 children born to mothers with WNV illness, showed performance at or above age level across domains. Conclusion: The risk for adverse pregnancy and newborn outcomes in women experiencing WNV illness in pregnancy appears to be low, but future studies with larger numbers are needed to rule out a small risk. Stretchable electronics exhibit unique mechanical properties to expand the applications areas of conventional electronics based on rigid wafers. Intrinsically stretchable thin film transistor is an essential component for functional stretchable electronics, which presents a great opportunity to develop mechanically compliant electronic materials. Certain elastomers have been recently adopted as the gate dielectrics, but their dielectric properties have not been thoroughly investigated for such applications. Here, a charging measurement technique with a resistor-capacitor circuit is proposed to quantify the capacitance of the dielectric layers based on elastomers. As compared with conventional methods, the technique serves as a universal approach to extract the capacitance of various elastomers under static conditions, irrespective of the charging mechanisms. This technique also offers a facile approach to reliably quantify the mobility of thin film transistors based on elastomeric dielectrics, paving the way to utilize this class of dielectrics in the development of intrinsically stretchable transistors. Phenology is an integrative science that comprises the study of recurring biological activities or events. In an era of rapidly changing climate, the relationship between the timing of those events and environmental cues such as temperature, snowmelt, water availability, or day length are of particular interest. This article provides an overview of the observer-based plant phenology sampling conducted by the U.S. National Ecological Observatory Network ( NEON), the resulting data, and the rationale behind the design. Trained technicians will conduct regular in situ observations of plant phenology at all terrestrial NEON sites for the 30-yr life of the observatory. Standardized and coordinated data across the network of sites can be used to quantify the direction and magnitude of the relationships between phenology and environmental forcings, as well as the degree to which these relationships vary among sites, among species, among phenophases, and through time. Vegetation at NEON sites will also be monitored with tower-based cameras, satellite remote sensing, and annual high-resolution airborne remote sensing. Ground-based measurements can be used to calibrate and improve satellite-derived phenometrics. NEON's phenology monitoring design is complementary to existing phenology research efforts and citizen science initiatives throughout the world and will produce interoperable data. By collocating plant phenology observations with a suite of additional meteorological, biophysical, and ecological measurements (e.g., climate, carbon flux, plant productivity, population dynamics of consumers) at 47 terrestrial sites, the NEON design will enable continental-scale inference about the status, trends, causes, and ecological consequences of phenological change.
