Assesses the menstrual cycle stage, vaginal flora, pH, macroscopic appearance and endogenous myeloperoxidase (MPO), an enzyme in neutrophils and monocytes which reacts with hydrogen peroxide and chloride to kill microbes after phagocytosis, in the adult female pig-tailed macaque. Augmentation of vaginal defenses against sexually transmitted diseases by the instillation of MPO; Finding that MPO treatment did not reduce vaginal hydrogen peroxide-producing organisms; Tendency of vaginal MPO levels to increase at four hours in treated animals.
