This paper presents a significant advancement in the understanding of tsunamigenic landslide hazard across the length of the Makassar Strait in Indonesia. We use statistical emulation across the length of the continental slope to conduct a probabilistic assessment of tsunami hazard on a regional scale, across 14 virtual coastal gauges. Focusing on the potential maximum wave amplitudes (distance between the wave crest and the still‐water level) from possible tsunamigenic landslide events, we generate predictions from Gaussian Process emulators fitted to input‐outputs from 50 training scenarios. We show that the most probable maximum wave amplitudes in the majority of gauges are between 1 and 5 m, with the maximum predicted amplitudes reaching values of up to 10 m on the eastern coast, and up to 50 m on the western coast. We also explore the potential use of Gaussian multivariate copulas to sample emulator prediction input values to create a more realistic distribution of volumes along the continental slope. The novel use of statistical emulation across a whole slope enables the probabilistic assessment of tsunami hazard due to landslides on a regional scale. This area is of key interest to Indonesia since the new capital will be established in the East Kalimantan region on the western side of the Makassar Strait. Plain Language Summary: This work is the first to use statistical models to conduct a landslide‐generated tsunami hazard assessment for the whole of the Makassar Strait in Indonesia. From 50 simulated landslide‐tsunami scenarios, we fit statistical models (known as emulators) to then predict the likelihood and maximum wave height of potential tsunami waves in 14 different locations along the Makassar continental slope. These predictions show that the most likely wave heights were between 1 and 5 m, with the highest predicted waves reaching up to 10 m on the eastern coast and up to 50 m on the western coast. The results of this study are particularly important because Indonesia has announced the relocation of its new capital city to the western side of the Makassar Strait, within the study area. The July 2020 Mw 7.8 Shumagin earthquake occurred in the seismic gap region along the Aleutian subduction zone. This interplate earthquake generated a small tsunami, but with unusual long‐period waves ranging between 40 and 90 min. We examined the cause of such an anomalous ocean wave through a source modeling inverted from tsunami and geodetic data. Our model indicates that the plate‐boundary rupture area was confined at depths of 20–40 km, although the slip resolvability decreases with depth. The coseismic seafloor displacement predominantly took place on the shallow continental shelf. Therefore, the initial water surface displacement at a mean water depth of ∼200 m is responsible for the long‐period waves, because tsunami period is inversely proportional to the square root of water depth. Furthermore, tsunami modeling implies that slip shallower than 20 km depth in the Aleutians would displace the seafloor beyond the continental shelf and generate shorter tsunami periods. Plain Language Summary: The tsunami generated by the July 2020 Mw 7.8 Shumagin earthquake exhibited extremely long‐period waves approximately ∼60 min on average, which is much longer compared with a larger event such as the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku‐oki earthquake that produced tsunami wave periods of less than 30 min. We investigated the cause of such a rare occurrence by modeling the tsunami source using both tsunami and static Global Navigation Satellite System displacements data. Our source model shows that the slip on the plate interface was confined at depths of 20–40 km, resulting in coseismic displacement at shallow water depths on the broad continental shelf extending ∼150 km offshore, due to the unique continental shelf geometry of the region. Therefore, such a large ratio of long wavelength of displacement to small tsunami velocity determined by the shallow water depth would naturally induce long‐period waves. From examinations of other major subduction zones globally, we found that the long‐period tsunami is a unique signature attributed to the Aleutian subduction zone. The Eastern Mediterranean Basin (EMB) is under the threat of tsunami events triggered by various causes including earthquakes and landslides. We propose a deployment of Offshore Bottom Pressure Gauges (OBPGs) around Crete Island, which would enable tsunami early warning by data assimilation for disaster mitigation. Our OBPG network consists of 12 gauges distributed around Crete Island, with a 100‐km interval, based on three criteria to select the locations. The station network must have a good azimuthal coverage and have enough (>50 km) distance from the coast, and the OBPGs are placed at the locations where the most energetic wave dynamics occur, which is confirmed by Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis of pre‐calculated tsunami scenarios. We demonstrate three test cases comprising a hypothetical seismogenic tsunami in east Sicily, a hypothetical landslide tsunami in the Aegean Sea, and the real tsunami event of the May 2020 off the Crete earthquake. Our designed OBPG network achieves an accuracy of 88.5% for the hypothetical seismogenic tsunami and 87.3% for the hypothetical landslide tsunami with regard to the forecasting of first tsunami peak. For the real event of May 2020, it predicts the tsunami arrival at tide gauge NOA‐04 accurately; the observed and forecasted amplitudes of the first wave are 5.0 cm and 4.5 cm, respectively. The warning lead time for the May 2020 event was ~10 min. Therefore, our results reveal that the assimilation of OBPG data can satisfactorily forecast the amplitudes and arrival times for tsunamis in the EMB. Objective: To examine the prevalence of novel newborn types among 165 million live births in 23 countries from 2000 to 2021., Design: Population-based, multi-country analysis., Setting: National data systems in 23 middle- and high-income countries., Population: Liveborn infants., Methods: Country teams with high-quality data were invited to be part of the Vulnerable Newborn Measurement Collaboration. We classified live births by six newborn types based on gestational age information (preterm <37 weeks versus term ≥37 weeks) and size for gestational age defined as small (SGA, <10th centile), appropriate (10th-90th centiles), or large (LGA, >90th centile) for gestational age, according to INTERGROWTH-21st standards. We considered small newborn types of any combination of preterm or SGA, and term + LGA was considered large. Time trends were analysed using 3-year moving averages for small and large types., Main Outcome Measures: Prevalence of six newborn types., Results: We analysed 165 017 419 live births and the median prevalence of small types was 11.7% - highest in Malaysia (26%) and Qatar (15.7%). Overall, 18.1% of newborns were large (term + LGA) and was highest in Estonia 28.8% and Denmark 25.9%. Time trends of small and large infants were relatively stable in most countries., Conclusions: The distribution of newborn types varies across the 23 middle- and high-income countries. Small newborn types were highest in west Asian countries and large types were highest in Europe.
