BACKGROUND: Host plant selection is a key factor affecting the survival, population establishment, and spread of herbivorous insect pests. The pepper weevil is one of the most important pests of cultivated pepper in North America with a capacity to rapidly expand its geographic range, in part through its ability to switch between cultivated and wild Solanaceous host plants. Towards a better management of this pest, this study examined metrics of pepper weevil host use including oviposition preference, development time, and successful offspring emergence on wild Solanaceous species and cultivated pepper cultivars. RESULTS: Pepper weevil successfully developed within fruit of several Solanaceous species including eastern black (Solanum ptycanthum) and climbing nightshade (S. dulcamara), in which development time was on average 4 days faster relative to Capsicum annuum cv. jalapeno peppers. Oviposition events occurred in all fruit types assessed and no strong host preference was detected among these. However, the number of emerged offspring was significantly lower than the number of oviposition events in C. chinense cv. habanero pepper fruit. CONCLUSION: Although not all nightshade species are suitable hosts for pepper weevil development, those permissive to offspring production do allow for faster development than in C. annuum peppers. While host preference was not detected among fruit types tested, low offspring emergence from fruit with high capsaicin content suggests a reduced ability of pepper weevil to tolerate high concentrations of this metabolite. These findings help elucidate the factors influencing pepper weevil bionomics, and their implications on pepper weevil management are discussed. Published 2021. Physiological traits are key in determining the vulnerability of narrow range, highly specialized animals to climate change. It is generally predicted that species from more stable environments possess lower thermal tolerance breadths and thermal plasticity than those from more variable habitats – the so‐called 'climatic variability hypothesis'. However, evolutionary trade‐offs between thermal breadth and its plasticity are also seen in some taxa, and the evolution of thermal physiology remains poorly understood. Subterranean environments are excellent systems for exploring these issues, being characterized by stable climatic conditions, with environmental variability increasing predictably from deep to shallow habitats. Acclimation capacity will be fundamental in determining the sensitivity of subterranean species to climate change, since they have poor dispersal capacity and limited possibility to exploit thermally different microhabitats in the uniform cave environment. We assessed critical thermal maximum (CTmax) and short‐term heat acclimation capacity in three related beetles (Leiodidae: Leptodirini) with differing degrees of specialization to the subterranean environment (deep, shallow and facultatively subterranean, respectively) and therefore exposed to contrasting thermal variability in nature. Only the facultative subterranean species showed any acclimatory capacity, also having the highest CTmax across the taxa studied. However, this species might experience the highest thermal stress in its habitat under climate change. The studied subterranean specialists will be poorly able to cope physiologically with temperature increase, but in contrast exposed to lower magnitude and rate of warming. Our results fit the climatic variability hypothesis, suggesting that adaptation to cave conditions has selected against the retention of acclimation mechanisms. We show that the pathways that determine vulnerability of subterranean species to climate change depend on their degree of specialization to deep subterranean environments. The main objective of the present study is to gain insight into the response of the Atlantic Jet (AJ) to the atmospheric forcing, in order to understand the hydrodynamic processes behind its disconnection from the Western Alboran Gyre (WAG) and the eastward displacement of the latter. An analysis was carried out based on observations of high frequency radar (HFR) derived currents and sea level, numerical model simulations and satellite imagery, with particular focus on the events of intense and endured easterlies. Among the main factors that characterize the atmospheric forcing linked to intense and persistent easterly wind events, the conjugation of the direct local wind forcing effect on the Atlantic Inflow (AI) on the eastern side of the Strait of Gibraltar and the response of the coastal waters in the northwestern (NW) corner of the Alboran Sea to the wind forcing over the Alboran Sea are of particular interest. In addition, the effect of the elevation surges in the Strait coming from the western Mediterranean Sea on reducing the AI intensity must be taken into account. These surges appear in coincidence with the establishment of persistent and intense easterlies over the Alboran Sea. The alteration of the AJ-WAG system in response to this forcing causes important changes in the phytoplankton distributions in the Alboran Sea. After the events of persistent and intense easterlies the phytoplankton accumulations in the NW Alboran Sea are displaced offshore and the phytoplankton transported with the AJ is injected toward the central zone of the WAG. Plain Language Summary Through the Strait of Gibraltar there is an exchange of water between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The lower layer of water from the Mediterranean Sea enters the Atlantic Ocean while the upper layer of water from the Atlantic enters the Mediterranean and in its easternmost side it is injected into the Alboran Sea as the Atlantic Jet (AJ). This jet creates a large accumulation of water east of the mouth of the Strait around which the waters circulate clockwise, forming the Western Alboran Gyre (WAG). In this study, we analyze how the atmospheric variability in the western Mediterranean, variations of atmospheric pressure and winds, cause the disconnection of the AJ and the WAG and the effects of this phenomenon on the marine resources of the Alboran Sea. Among the most interesting results, the important role of atmospheric pressure variations is highlighted in areas as remote as the Ligurian Sea. Background: Laparoscopic liver resections (LLR) have been increasingly performed in recent years. Most of the available evidence, however, comes from specialized centers in Asia, Europe and USA. Data from South America are limited and based on single-center experiences. To date, no multicenter studies evaluated the results of LLR in South America. The aim of this study was to evaluate the experience and results with LLR in South American centers. Methods: From February to November 2019, a survey about LLR was conducted in 61 hepatobiliary centers in South America, composed by 20 questions concerning demographic characteristics, surgical data, and perioperative results. Results: Fifty-one (83.6%) centers from seven different countries answered the survey. A total of 2887 LLR were performed, as follows: Argentina (928), Brazil (1326), Chile (322), Colombia (210), Paraguay (9), Peru (75), and Uruguay (8). The first program began in 1997; however, the majority (60.7%) started after 2010. The percentage of LLR over open resections was 28.4% (4.4–84%). Of the total, 76.5% were minor hepatectomies and 23.5% major, including 266 right hepatectomies and 343 left hepatectomies. The conversion rate was 9.7%, overall morbidity 13%, and mortality 0.7%. Conclusions: This is the largest study assessing the dissemination and results of LLR in South America. The Subantarctic zone is one of the largest High‐Nutrient Low‐Chlorophyll zones of the Southern Ocean. Despite widespread iron limitation, phytoplankton accumulation (chlorophyll a (chla) > 0.3 mg m−3) often occurs near islands and bathymetric features such as on the Campbell Plateau, southeast of New Zealand. To investigate the processes responsible for localized increases in chla commonly observed by satellites, we characterized phytoplankton biomass structure, production, and microzooplankton grazing on Campbell Plateau and surrounding waters in austral autumn (March 2017). Chla on the plateau tended to be higher, more variable (0.52 ± 0.38 mg chla m−3, mean ± standard deviation), and characterized by larger phytoplankton forms (22 ± 27%chla > 20 μm) than surrounding waters (0.29 ± 0.12 mg chla m−3, 5 ± 2%). The increased contribution of diatoms, together with higher photosystem II maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm = 0.45 ± 0.05) and lower effective absorption cross‐section (σPSII = 774 ± 90 Å RCII−1) on the plateau, suggests an alleviation of iron stress relative to surrounding waters (Fv/Fm = 0.37 ± 0.04, σPSII = 974 ± 89 Å RCII−1). Phytoplankton growth (μ0 = 0.42 ± 0.20 day−1) and production rates (6.1 ± 3.2 mg C m−3 day−1) were also higher compared to surrounding waters (0.27 ± 0.04 day−1, 3.5 ± 1.9 mg C m−3 day−1). While microzooplankton grazing (g = 0.28 ± 0.18 day−1) balanced phytoplankton growth off the plateau (g:μ0 = 1.13 ± 0.18), the imbalance observed on Campbell Plateau (g = 0.25 ± 0.25 day−1) allowed a substantial proportion of primary production to escape microzooplankton grazing control (g:μ0 = 0.48 ± 0.31). Overall, the degree of coupling tended to decrease with the depth of the mixed layer (R2 > 0.6, p < 0.001). We hypothesize that the entrainment of deeper water into the mixed layer regulates the onset and fate of the autumn bloom by altering nutrient supply and microzooplankton grazing pressure. Plain Language Summary: This study investigates controls on phytoplankton production processes in the Subantarctic region of the Southern Ocean. Low iron concentrations prevailing in this region limit phytoplankton growth and production rates, while phytoplankton biomass is further controlled by microzooplankton grazing. Despite these constraints, phytoplankton can thrive and accumulate, at least transiently, on nearby bathymetric features. We found that phytoplankton accumulation commonly observed in austral autumn on Campbell Plateau, southeast of New Zealand, presents floristic and physiological characteristics consistent with an alleviation of nutrient/iron stress relative to waters surrounding the plateau. While microzooplankton grazing balanced phytoplankton growth off the plateau, both processes tended to decouple on the plateau, which allowed a substantial proportion of phytoplankton production to escape microzooplankton control and phytoplankton biomass to accumulate. Overall, the net growth rate resulting from this (im)balance tended to increase with the depth of the upper mixed layer of the ocean, suggesting that changes in the stratification and mixing of the upper ocean can influence bottom‐up and top‐down processes controlling phytoplankton production. We hypothesize that by altering the rate of nutrient supply and the microzooplankton grazing pressure, the entrainment of the mixed layer regulates the onset and fate (recycling vs. export) of the autumn bloom. The top‐down and indirect effects of insects on plant communities depend on patterns of host use, which are often poorly documented, particularly in species‐rich tropical forests. At Barro Colorado Island, Panama, we compiled the first food web quantifying trophic interactions between the majority of co‐occurring woody plant species and their internally feeding insect seed predators. Our study is based on more than 200 000 fruits representing 478 plant species, associated with 369 insect species. Insect host‐specificity was remarkably high: only 20% of seed predator species were associated with more than one plant species, while each tree species experienced seed predation from a median of two insect species. Phylogeny, but not plant traits, explained patterns of seed predator attack. These data suggest that seed predators are unlikely to mediate indirect interactions such as apparent competition between plant species, but are consistent with their proposed contribution to maintaining plant diversity via the Janzen–Connell mechanism. Ecological speciation is often observed in phytophagous insects and their parasitoids due to divergent selection caused by host‐associated or temporal differences. Most previous studies have utilized limited genetic markers or distantly related species to look for reproductive barriers of speciation. In our study, we focus on closely related species of Lygus bugs and two sister species of Peristenus parasitoid wasps. Using mitochondrial DNA COI and genomewide SNPs generated using ddRADseq, we tested for potential effects of host‐associated differentiation (HAD) or temporal isolation in this system. While three species of Lygus are clearly delineated with both COI and SNPs, no evidence of HAD or temporal differentiation was detected. Two Peristenus sister species were supported by both sets of markers and separated temporally, with P. mellipes emerging early in June and attacking the first generation of Lygus, while P. howardi emerging later in August and attacking the second generation of their hosts. This is one of the few studies to examine closely related hosts and parasitoids to examine drivers of diversification. Given the results of this study, the Lygus‐Peristenus system demonstrates temporal isolation as a potential barrier to reproductive isolation for parasitoids, which could indicate higher parasitoid diversity in regions of multivoltine hosts. This study also demonstrates that incorporating systematics improves studies of parasitoid speciation, particularly by obtaining accurate host records through rearing, carefully delimiting cryptic species and examining population‐level differences with genomic‐scale data among closely related taxa. We used a combination of COI (mtDNA) and genomewide SNPs (ddRADseq) to test for reproductive isolating barriers of speciation (host‐associated differentiation or temporal isolation) in closely related Peristenus parasitoids and their Lygus herbivore hosts. While the host exhibited no differentiation on the host or temporal scale, the two Peristenus sister parasitoid species were separated temporally, in particular Peristenus mellipes emerging early in June and attacking the first generation of Lygus and Peristenus howardi emerging later in August and attacking the second generation of their hosts. The serotype O113:H21 is considered one of the relevant non-O157 STEC serotypes associated with severe human infections. Due to the increased detection of O113 strains and their relationship with clinical cases, which emphasizes the importance of this serogroup as an emerging pathogen, our aim was to determine the characteristics of STEC O113:H21 strains circulating in bovine cattle and retail meat from Argentina. For this purpose, we determined the presence and combinations of various virulence genes (and their variants) related to adhesion and toxicity in a collection of 34 isolates. Their genetic relatedness using multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) was also studied. Subtyping of stx genes indicated that O113:H21 strains circulating in Argentina mainly present stx2a alone or together with stx2c or, less frequent, with stx2d, all of which are subtypes associated with human disease. We found plasmid markers, such as saa, ehxA and subA, in a higher proportion than previous studies, and five variants of saa, two of which were novel ones. In relation to MLVA subtyping, we detected a limited diversity among the isolates considering that several loci were not discriminative and, that in some farms, the same clone seemed to remain circulating throughout the year. The O113:H21 strains studied harbour several toxin and adhesion genes (saa, espP, fimCD, ehaA, iha, hcpA, elfA, lpfO113, ecpA, subA, cdt-V) and Stx subtypes associated with human disease. Results also highlighted that subtyping of stx and saa is useful to discriminate O113:H21 strains that share virulence genes. In conclusion, this study shows that a number of O113:H21 strains that occur in foods and bovines could be pathogenic for humans. Abstract: The Iberian Peninsula is a major European region of biodiversity, as it harbours more than 30% of European endemic species. Despite a number of studies having evaluated the ability of nature reserves to protect certain taxa, there is still a lack of knowledge on how Iberian endemic fauna are represented in these reserves. We detected biodiversity hotspots of Iberian endemicity and evaluated the effectiveness of the Natura 2000 network (N2000) in representing 249 endemic species from eight animal taxonomic groups (amphibians, mammals, freshwater fishes, reptiles, water beetles, butterflies, lacewings and dung beetles). We found that only the 10% of these Iberian endemic species are considered species of community interest (i.e. species included in the Annexes of the Habitats Directive). We conducted gap analyses and null models of representativeness in N2000. Generally, N2000 is effective in its representation of Iberian endemic fauna, although we detected species and few hotspots of endemism that were still not represented. It is necessary to declare a few new protected areas, thus enhancing N2000's effectiveness in the conservation of the Iberian endemic fauna. Although the aim of N2000 is to protect species listed in the Birds and Habitats Directives, the conservation status of endemic species from one of the most important areas of Europe in terms of biodiversity, could be also a concern for the European Union. Our results are useful in the context of the recent European Commission mandate calling for a ‘fitness check’ of the Birds and Habitats Directives. One of the key questions in the use of mixture models concerns the choice of the number of components most suitable for a given data set. In this paper we investigate answers to this problem in the context of likelihood-based clustering of the rows of a matrix of ordinal data modelled by the ordered stereotype model. Two methodologies for selecting the best model are demonstrated and compared. The first approach fits a separate model to the data for each possible number of clusters, and then uses an information criterion to select the best model. The second approach uses a Bayesian construction in which the parameters and the number of clusters are estimated simultaneously from their joint posterior distribution. Simulation studies are presented which include a variety of scenarios in order to test the reliability of both approaches. Verticillium wilt of olive is best managed by resistant cultivars, but those currently available show incomplete resistance to the defoliating (D) Verticillium dahliae pathotype. Moreover, these cultivars do not satisfy consumers' demand for high yields and oil quality. Highly resistant rootstocks would be of paramount importance for production of agronomically adapted and commercially desirable olive cultivars in D V. dahliae-infested soils. In this work, resistance to D V. dahliae in wild olive clones Ac-13, Ac-18, OutVert and StopVert was assessed by quantifying the fungal DNA along the stem using a highly sensitive real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction ( qPCR) protocol and a stem colonization index ( SCI) based on isolation of V. dahliae following artificial inoculations under conditions highly conducive for verticillium wilt. Ac-13, Ac-18, OutVert and StopVert showed a symptomless reaction to D V. dahliae. The mean amount of D V. dahliae DNA quantified in stems of the four clones ranged from 3.64 to 28.89 pg/100 ng olive DNA, which was 249 to 1537 times lower than that in susceptible Picual olive. The reduction in the quantitative stem colonization of wild olive clones by D V. dahliae was also indicated by a sharp decrease in the SCI. Overall, there was a pattern of decreasing SCI in acropetal progression along the plant axis, as well as correlation between positive reisolation and quantification of pathogen DNA. The results of this research show that wild olive clones Ac-13, Ac-18, OutVert and StopVert have a valuable potential as rootstocks for the management of verticillium wilt in olive. Determination of saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, and the shape parameters α and n of the water retention curve, θ(h), is of paramount importance to characterize the water flow in the vadose zone. This work presents a modified upward infiltration method to estimate Ks, α and n from numerical inverse analysis of the measured cumulative upward infiltration (CUI) at multiple constant tension lower boundary conditions. Using the HYDRUS-2D software, a theoretical analysis on a synthetic loam soil under different soil tensions (0, 0-10, 0-50 and 0-100 cm), with and without an overpressure step of 10 cm high from the top boundary condition at the end of the upward infiltration process, was performed to check the uniqueness and the accuracy of the solutions. Using a tension sorptivimeter device, the method was validated in a laboratory experiment on five different soils: a coarse and a fine sand, and a 1-mm sieved loam, clay loam and silt-gypseous soils. The estimated α and n parameters were compared to the corresponding values measured with the TDR-pressure cell method. The theoretical analysis demonstrates that Ks and θ(h) can be simultaneously estimated from measured upward cumulative infiltration when high (>50 cm) soil tensions are initially applied at the lower boundary. Alternatively, satisfactory results can be also obtained when medium tensions (<50 cm) and the Ks calculated from the overpressure step at the end of the experiment are considered. A consistent relationship was found between the α ( R2 = 0.86, p < 0.02) and n ( R2 = 0.97, p < 0.001) values measured with the TDR-pressure cell and the corresponding values estimated with the tension sorptivimeter. The error between the α (in logarithm scale) and n values estimated with the inverse analysis and the corresponding values measured with pressure chamber were 3.1 and 6.1%, respectively. Background As future health educators, nursing and physiotherapy students will play an essential role in the prevention of smoking. Aim To determine the prevalence of smoking among students and to analyse their knowledge of and attitudes towards smoking. Method This was a descriptive cross-sectional study using an anonymous questionnaire and conducted in a Spanish Faculty of Health Sciences in 2013. Findings 247 nursing and physiotherapy students (82.33%) participated in the study. The global prevalence of smoking (18.2%) was lower compare with the general population group of the same age. We have observed statistical significance in relation to previous studies. Nursing and physiotherapy students showed a low nicotine dependence. We found a lack of knowledge about the harmful effects of cigarette consumption on health. Statistically significant results were also found in relation to degree courses (p < 0.01) as regards students' opinions about their knowledge of strategies and methods to help patients stop smoking. Conclusion Most students started smoking before commencing their university studies; consequently, interventions should focus on cessation programmes. An analysis of university curricula leading to the award of a degree in the health sciences could serve to identify educational deficiencies in order to implement the necessary modifications. Implications for nursing and health policy This paper presents an update in tobacco use characteristics amongst nursing and physiotherapy students. Those results have showed a need to improve the curricula in order to develop specific programmes to improve knowledge, attitudes and beliefs. Measures to prevent smoking must be taken at school. Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of 200 mg of daily vaginal natural progesterone to prevent preterm birth in women with preterm labour. Design Multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Setting Twenty-nine centres in Switzerland and Argentina. Population A total of 385 women with preterm labour (240/7 to 336/7 weeks of gestation) treated with acute tocolysis. Methods Participants were randomly allocated to either 200 mg daily of self-administered vaginal progesterone or placebo within 48 hours of starting acute tocolysis. Main outcome measures Primary outcome was delivery before 37 weeks of gestation. Secondary outcomes were delivery before 32 and 34 weeks, adverse effects, duration of tocolysis, re-admissions for preterm labour, length of hospital stay, and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The study was ended prematurely based on results of the intermediate analysis. Results Preterm birth occurred in 42.5% of women in the progesterone group versus 35.5% in the placebo group (relative risk [ RR] 1.2; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.93-1.5). Delivery at <32 and <34 weeks did not differ between the two groups (12.9 versus 9.7%; [ RR 1.3; 95% CI 0.7-2.5] and 19.7 versus 12.9% [ RR 1.5; 95% CI 0.9-2.4], respectively). The duration of tocolysis, hospitalisation, and recurrence of preterm labour were comparable between groups. Neonatal morbidity occurred in 44 (22.8%) cases on progesterone versus 35 (18.8%) cases on placebo ( RR: 1.2; 95% CI 0.82-1.8), whereas there were 4 (2%) neonatal deaths in each study group. The growth of Cobalt oxides by reactive thermal evaporation of metallic Cobalt in an oxygen atmosphere on a series of oxide substrates, namely SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO, has been chemically and morphologically studied by means of XPS and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The XPS results reveal that cobalt oxide grows as CoO (Co2+) for coverages up to some tens of equivalent monolayers on all substrates. For larger coverages, the formation of the spinel oxide Co3O4 has been observed. AFM and XPS quantification allowed us to determine the way of growth of CoO on all substrates, being of Volmer-Weber (i.e. islands) mode for SiO2, whereas for Al2O3 and MgO, the growth follows the Frank-van der Merwe (i.e. layer-by-layer) mode. The results are discussed in terms of the mismatch of the lattice parameters of the CoO adsorbates with the substrates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bituminaria bituminosa (L.) C.H. Stirton (Fabaceae) is a biennial-perennial species, which grows throughout the Mediterranean basin and Macaronesia. It is cultivated to provide livestock fodder and shows promise as a source of furanocoumarins. This is the first report on its physiological and growth responses to water deprivation. We assessed these in a pot assay, in the field and in hydroponic culture, using two populations from southern Spain and two from the Canary Islands. Proline accumulation was much lower in the field than for pot-grown plants, supporting recent indications that it is phytotoxic under combined drought and heat stress. In hydroponic culture, imposition of water stress by poly(ethylene glycol) increased the root/shoot ratio and decreased the root hydraulic conductivity. Overall, the results show B. bituminosa to be a species with high constitutive resistance to soil water deficit. For example, leaf turgor did not diminish, demonstrating its capacity for osmotic adjustment, and the specific leaf area in field conditions was similar to that of other species adapted to seasonal drought. Notwithstanding, the two Canarian populations (which complete their life cycles under very different conditions) maintained better their relative water content and water potential to avoid internal stress. ABSTRACT In Spain, national parks represent the mainstay of conservation polices and attempt to protect the most representative natural ecosystems. However, studies on the ecology and conservation of aquatic biodiversity within protected areas are still scarce. This study aimed at compiling an inventory of the macroinvertebrate families inhabiting the aquatic ecosystems of each mountainous Spanish national park (Sierra Nevada, Cabañeros, Ordesa, Picos de Europa, Aigüestortes and Monfragüe). The results were used to answer two questions: (i) Which environmental variables are related to macroinvertebrate composition and richness in these protected ecosystems? (ii) Which taxon or group of taxa could act as biodiversity surrogates?, Sampling was carried out in 81 aquatic ecosystems across the six national parks during the summers of 2008-2010., The national parks with the highest richness were Picos de Europa and Cabañeros. Overall, the six parks incorporated 66.2% of the taxa included in the Iberian checklist. Multivariate techniques showed that maximum altitude and the presence of lotic habitats were the most important variables related to different community compositions. The best richness model included the presence of a lotic habitat, together with the percentage of the catchment area with non-irrigated agriculture and siliceous geology., Selecting several diverse lotic and lentic water bodies at different altitudes provides the best way of representing Iberian macroinvertebrate diversity. Coleoptera family richness may be used as a macroinvertebrate biodiversity surrogate in Iberian mountainous protected areas because it displayed the highest correlation with the other taxonomic groups and remaining richness values. This work presents a new design of disc infiltrometer, which, associated with a microflowmeter (MF) and a solenoid valve set, makes it possible to automate the infiltration rate ( Q) measurements at different soil pressure heads (ψ). The MF consists of a 13·8-cm long and 1·5 mm i.d. pipe, with a pressure transducer connecting the two ends of the MF, inserted in a water-flow pipe that connects the Mariotte tube and the water-supply reservoir of the disc infiltrometer. Water flow is calculated from the head losses in the MF. Changes in ψ in the bubble tower, automatically affected when the infiltration rate reaches steady state, are controlled by a datalogger connected to four solenoid valves. The new design was tested in laboratory and field conditions, and the results showed that the MF allows the soil water infiltration rates to be correctly estimated for different soil characteristics. The water retention curve (θ(ψ)), which defines the relationship between soil volumetric water content (θ) and matric potential (ψ), is of paramount importance in characterizing the hydraulic behaviour of soils. However, few methods are so far available for estimating θ(ψ) in undisturbed soil samples. We present a new design of TDR-pressure cell (TDR-Cell) for estimating θ(ψ) in undisturbed soil samples. The TDR-Cell consists of a 50-mm-long and 50-mm internal diameter stainless steel cylinder (which constitutes the outer frame of a coaxial line) attached to a porous ceramic disc and closed at the ends with two aluminium lids. A 49-mm-long and 3-mm-diameter stainless steel rod, which runs longitudinally through the centre of the cylinder, constitutes the inner rod of a coaxial TDR probe. The TDR-Cell was used to determine the θ(ψ) curves of a packed sand and seven undisturbed soil samples from three profiles of agricultural soils. These θ(ψ) curves were subsequently compared to those obtained from the corresponding 2-mm sieved soils using the pressure plate method. Measurements of bulk electrical conductivity, σa, as a function of the water content, σa(θ), of the undisturbed soil samples were also performed. An excellent correlation ( R2 = 0·988) was found between the θ values measured by TDR on the different undisturbed soils and the corresponding θ obtained from the soil gravimetric water content. A typical bimodal θ(ψ) function was found for most of the undisturbed soil samples. Comparison between the θ(ψ) curves measured with the TDR-Cell and those obtained from the 2-mm sieved soils showed that the pressure plate method overestimates θ at low ψ values. The σa(θ) relationship was well described by a simple power expression ( R2 > 0·95), in which the power factor, defined as tortuosity, ranged between 1·18 and 3·75. Background Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are life-threatening drug reactions considered to be part of the spectrum of a single pathological process. Objective To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of SJS/TEN in children attended at our hospital. Materials and methods Retrospective study of children diagnosed with SJS/TEN between 1999 and 2009 in a University Hospital provided with regional-level burn and paediatric intensive care units. Results We found 14 paediatric patients (eight SJS and six TEN). They presented an average of 60% of the body surface area affected and 31% of epidermal sloughing. The average of suspected drugs was 1.7 per patient, anticonvulsants (carbamazepine, phenytoin and lamotrigine) and antibiotics (penicillin and macrolides) being the most frequent ones. Silver sulfadiazine was the topical treatment most frequently used, 86% of patients received systemic steroids and 28.5% intravenous immunoglobulins. One patient died. Conclusions The SJS/TEN complex is a true dermatological critical condition that also affects children. Any drug can be the causative agent, more frequently anticonvulsants and antibiotics. Depending on the extension of the affected body surface, patients should be rapidly admitted to a critical care area with experience in the care of burn patients. Discontinuation of the suspected offending drugs is mandatory. Optimal supportive care and management of denuded skin areas are still the mainstay of treatment. This study investigated the phylogeographic structure of Cistus ladanifer, in order to locate its Quaternary refugia, reconstruct its recolonisation patterns and assess the role of geographical features (mountain ranges, rivers and the Strait of Gibraltar) as barriers to its seed flow and expansion through the Western Mediterranean. Thirty-eight populations were screened for length variation of polymorphic chloroplast simple sequence repeats (cpSSRs). Statistical analyses included estimation of haplotypic diversity, hierarchical analysis of molecular variation () and fixation indices. Mantel tests, SAMOVA and BARRIER analyses were applied to evaluate the geographical partitioning of genetic diversity across the entire species range. Pollen data from bibliography were used to complement molecular inferences. Chlorotype diversity within populations was similar throughout the natural range of C. ladanifer (mean haplotypic diversity = 0.32). High differentiation among populations was estimated ( G = 0.60). Our data suggest that the barriers of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Betic ranges may have favoured the divergence during glacial periods of four different lineages of populations inferred with SAMOVA. The main northward colonisation of in the Iberian Peninsula occurred from refugia in southwest Iberia. This process may have been influenced by human activities (forest clearance, livestock grazing and even commerce) in the Iberian Peninsula. Background Nail disorders are frequent among the geriatric population and unfortunately, repeat avulsion procedures often result in complications. Objective To utilize a phenol-based total matricectomy technique for permanent nail ablation and evaluate its effectiveness. Methods We performed total nail ablation on 34 toenails of the hallux (30 patients) with a gauze–phenol application technique and evaluated the degree of pain reported by the patient 12 months postoperatively compared with the preoperative stage. Furthermore, we evaluated the patients’ satisfaction with the final cosmetic appearance as well as their satisfaction with the overall procedure. Results All patients reported ‘too much’ or ‘severe’ pain prior to surgery and 94.11% reported ‘no pain’ 12 months post-surgery. A vast majority of the patients (82.35%) felt pleased with the cosmetic results and all patients reported that they were ‘very satisfied’ or ‘strongly satisfied’ with the procedure when interviewed at their 12 month follow-up examination. Limitations There were a limited number of participants in this study across an extensive timeframe. Time domain reflectometiy (TDR) is a technique that allows simultaneous estimates of apparent permittivity (ϵa) and hence volumetric water content (θ) and bulk electrical conductivity (σa). Difficulties arise for θ and σa determination, however, when uncoated TDR probes (UP) are used in highly conductive media. This work shows that σa can be estimated in highly conductive media using a TDR probe coated with a high-dielectric insulator (CP). To this end, the Dalton method for σa estimations was applied to a 10-cm-long three-rod TDR probe insulated with a 0.2-mm-thick epoxy-ceramic composite coating with a relative permittivity, ϵr, of 32.3. This method was calibrated on different NaCl-water solutions (0-15 dS m-1) and compared with the standard long-time TDR method for σa estimations using an UP. The method was subsequently used for determining σa in four different soils with different values of θ and σa (0-6 dS m-1) and again compared with the standard TDR procedure. The low error (RMSE = 1.5) for the comparison between the ϵa measured with the CP and that calculated with the analytical solution for coaxial probes indicates that the CP is accurate enough for ϵa estimations. For σa values <4 dS m-1, the UP allows determinations of ϵa and the most accurate estimations of σa using the standard TDR method (R2 = 0.99). For higher σa values, however, estimations of ϵa were only possible using the CP, where σa was satisfactorily determined (R2 = 0.99) using the Dalton method. It is increasingly recognised that adequate measures of biodiversity should include information on the 'relatedness' of species within ecological assemblages, or the phylogenetic levels at which diversity is expressed. Taxonomic distinctness measures provide a series of indices to achieve this, which are independent of sample size. Taxonomic distinctness has been employed widely in marine systems, where it has been suggested that this index can provide a reliable measure of anthropogenic impact. 2. We tested the behaviour of three related taxonomic distinctiveness indices (Average Taxonomic Distinctness, Δ+; Variation in Taxonomic Distinctness, Λ+; and Total Taxonomic Distinctness, sΔ+) in relation to putative levels of anthropogenic impact in inland waters and their potential utility in environmental monitoring, using an extensive data set for aquatic beetles from the south-east of the Iberian Peninsula. 3. Taxonomic distinctness measures were not able to identify human disturbance effects and there were no clear relationships between these new biodiversity measures and the disturbance level recorded at individual localities. Furthermore, the taxonomic distinctness measures used were apparently less sensitive to the effects of anthropogenic impact than other diversity metrics, such as species richness and rarity. 4. We conclude that taxonomic distinctness indices may not always perform as well as other metrics in the assessment of environmental quality. In addition, taxonomic distinctness measure should be interpreted with caution, as their performance and ability to detect anthropogenic disturbance may depend on the phylogenetic structure of sampled taxa within a region, and their evolutionary and ecological history. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a diagnostic tool whose inexpensiveness, simplicity and innocuousness have led it to be increasingly accepted in daily medical practice. This method, which is useful for the study of lesions that are accessible by radiological exploration or palpation, provides information about the cytological aspects of punctured lesions. Sometimes, such information can be extended to the histological area through study of cell blocks, true microbiopsies, which are of great diagnostic use. A first reported complementary metal‐oxide semiconductor (CMOS)‐integrated acceleration sensor obtained through isotropic inter‐metal dielectric (IMD) etching of a back‐end‐of‐line (BEOL) integrated circuit interconnection stack, without any additional substrate etching steps, is presented. The mechanical device composed of a CMOS‐process 8 μm‐thick metal‐via‐metal stack of 135 μm diameter and suspended 2.5 μm over a bottom fixed electrode, has a resonance frequency of 20 kHz, a sensing capacitance of 50 fF with sensitivity 14 aF/G and it is integrated on the same substrate with a simple low‐noise amplifier reaching 25 mG of RMS noise measured from 0.25 to 100 Hz bandwidth. The time domain reflectometry (TDR) technique allows simultaneous estimation of apparent permittivity (εa) and bulk electrical conductivity (δa). In highly conductive media, however, the signal is completely attenuated, which precludes permittivity measurements. This study showed that δa can be estimated in conductive media by applying long-time TDR waveform analysis to a TDR probe partially insulated with a high-dielectric coating. Four 10-cm-long three-rod TDR probes with identical geometry but different percentages of rod coating were tested: an uncoated sensor (P0) and probes with 50% (P50), 75% (P75), and 95% (P95) of the rod length coated with an insulator with a relative permittivity (εr) of 32.3. A good relationship (r² = 0.99) was found between the εa estimated, if possible, with P0 immersed in several conductive and nonconductive media and the corresponding values estimated with P50, P75, and P95 The results also show that, for δa values ranging between 0.4 and 0.75 S m-1, simultaneous measurements of εa and δa were only possible using the partially coated probes. A good correlation was found between the δa estimated with P0 inserted in different soil columns wetted with highly saline solutions (i.e., δa > 0.2 S m-1) and those values estimated with P50, P75, and P95 (r² = 0.96, RMSE = 1.08, and SD = 0.38). For δa < 0.2 S m-1, the accuracy of the partially coated TDR probes for estimations of δa decreased as the percentage of the rod coating increased, with errors up to 292% when δa determined by P95 was compared with that estimated by P0. Clonal heterogeneity in multisited or recurrent lymphoid neoplasms is a phenomenon that has been increasingly studied in recent years. However, in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas it remains largely unexplored. Patients diagnosed at our institution with multisited MALT lymphoma, from January 2009 to October 2018, were studied. Molecular studies were performed for the detection of clonally rearranged immunoglobulin by polymerase chain reaction.In all, 91 patients were included. Of those, 28 had a multisited disease and in 16 clonality studies were done. In eight cases, multifocal involvement was synchronous and in eight metachronous. Patients with non-gastric gastrointestinal tract involvement tended to disseminate within the same tract, without observing other specific dissemination patterns. Four cases (25%) had clonal heterogeneity at the different organs involved. All patients with late relapses (two patients) had different clones. The majority of patients with multisited MALT lymphomas presented with the same clone in the different involved organs, identifying a different clone in those with late relapses. These patients could represent de novo neoplasms, rather than a relapse. This could mean that some individuals might have a genetic predisposition to develop this type of lymphoma and it could also have clinical implications regarding therapeutic decisions., (© 2020 British Society for Haematology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea is among the important places in Africa for the conservation of primates, but a cultural preference for bushmeat and a lack of effective law enforcement has encouraged commercial bushmeat hunting, threatening the survival of the remaining primate population. For over 13 years, we collected bushmeat market data in the Malabo market, recording over 35,000 primate carcasses, documenting "mardi gras" consumption patterns, seasonal carcass availability, and negative effects resulting from government intervention. We also conducted forest surveys throughout Bioko's two protected areas in order to localize and quantify primate populations and hunting pressure. Using these data, we were able to document the significant negative impact bushmeat hunting had on monkey populations, estimate which species are most vulnerable to hunting, and develop ecological niche models to approximate the distribution of each of Bioko's diurnal primate species. These results also have allowed for the identification of primate hotspots, such as the critically important southwest region of the Gran Caldera Scientific Reserve, and thus, priority areas for conservation on Bioko, leading to more comprehensive conservation recommendations. Current and future efforts now focus on bridging the gap between investigators and legislators in order to develop and effectively implement a management plan for Bioko's Gran Caldera Scientific Reserve and to develop a targeted educational campaign to reduce demand by changing consumer attitudes toward bushmeat. Among primate species living in multimale-multifemale groups, the number of receptive females may determine the rank of the lowest male that copulates (priority of access model, or PoA [Altmann SA. 1962. A field study of the sociobiology of rhesus monkeys, Macaca mulatta. Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences 102:338-435]). Factors, such as temporary instability in the hierarchy and female behavior can, however, affect high-ranking males' ability to monopolize females, reducing mating skew and causing the hierarchy to depart from predictions of PoA. Here, I use behavioral data collected over a 22-month period on a wild group of Sanje mangabeys (Cercocebus sanjei) to examine the effect of a takeover by two immigrating males who became α and β in the hierarchy, and of female behavior on male mating skew. Data on male agonistic interactions were collected on nine males using ad libitum observations, while information on male mating success (i.e., daily proportion of ejaculatory copulations with the focal female) was collected through focal follows of 12 sexually receptive females. Before the takeover, the hierarchy was stable and highly skewed, with the α-male monopolizing up to 75% of copulations. At this time, however, mating skew did not follow the predictions of PoA. During the takeover, from the time one of the newly immigrant males replaced the α until the second immigrant male became the new β, the stability of the hierarchy dropped significantly and mating was no longer skewed. Accordingly, the top two ranking males at that time (i.e., the new α and former β) accounted for only 33% of copulations. After the takeover, rank stability increased, and mating skew followed the PoA. Female mating solicitations also had a significant positive effect on male mating success, and may have contributed to the deviation from the PoA. This study demonstrates that temporary rank instability decreases high-ranking males' ability to monopolize copulations, causing a departure from the predictions of the PoA. Am. J. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of 200 mg of daily vaginal natural progesterone to prevent preterm birth in women with preterm labour., Design: Multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial., Setting: Twenty-nine centres in Switzerland and Argentina., Population: A total of 385 women with preterm labour (24(0/7) to 33(6/7) weeks of gestation) treated with acute tocolysis., Methods: Participants were randomly allocated to either 200 mg daily of self-administered vaginal progesterone or placebo within 48 hours of starting acute tocolysis., Main Outcome Measures: Primary outcome was delivery before 37 weeks of gestation. Secondary outcomes were delivery before 32 and 34 weeks, adverse effects, duration of tocolysis, re-admissions for preterm labour, length of hospital stay, and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The study was ended prematurely based on results of the intermediate analysis., Results: Preterm birth occurred in 42.5% of women in the progesterone group versus 35.5% in the placebo group (relative risk [RR] 1.2; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.93-1.5). Delivery at <32 and <34 weeks did not differ between the two groups (12.9 versus 9.7%; [RR 1.3; 95% CI 0.7-2.5] and 19.7 versus 12.9% [RR 1.5; 95% CI 0.9-2.4], respectively). The duration of tocolysis, hospitalisation, and recurrence of preterm labour were comparable between groups. Neonatal morbidity occurred in 44 (22.8%) cases on progesterone versus 35 (18.8%) cases on placebo (RR: 1.2; 95% CI 0.82-1.8), whereas there were 4 (2%) neonatal deaths in each study group., Conclusion: There is no evidence that the daily administration of 200 mg vaginal progesterone decreases preterm birth or improves neonatal outcome in women with preterm labour., (© 2014 Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.)

An accurate description of reproductive characteristics and ovarian endocrinology is necessary to address questions about the reproductive strategies and life history of a species and for meaningful, cross species analyses. Here we used analysis of fecal estradiol (fE) and behavioral observations to determine for the first time the reproductive characteristics and endocrinology of a wild group (N = 18 adult and 3 adolescent females) of Sanje mangabeys (Cercocebus sanjei). The study was conducted in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Tanzania, from October 2008 through September 2010. Average cycle length (±SD) was 29.3 ± 3.2 days in adults and 51.4 ± 5.5 days in adolescents. Menses appeared within 5.1 ± 2.1 days in adults and 4.8 ± 0.3 days in adolescents after the end of maximum tumescence, and lasted 6.7 ± 3.1 and 10.3 ± 5.0 days, respectively. Infant death tended to reduce the number of cycles to conception (4.3 ± 1.5 cycles after a surviving infant vs. 2.6 ± 1.0 cycles after infant death). Adolescents cycled for at least 16 months without conceiving. Implantation bleeding began 17.5 ± 0.7 days from the onset of detumescence, and lasted 10.0 ± 1.4 days. Gestation length averaged 171.8 ± 3.4 days. Postpartum amenorrhea lasted 6.7 ± 2.3 months while females whose infants had died resumed cycling within 14.3 ± 5.9 days. The interbirth interval after a surviving infant averaged 20.0 ± 4.3 months. These reproductive characteristics of the Sanje mangabey resembled those of other mangabeys and related cercopithecines, with the exception of an earlier onset and longer duration of menstruation and implantation bleeding. Objective: To analyse life-threatening obstetric complications that occurred in public hospitals in Argentina., Design: Multicentre collaborative cross-sectional study., Setting: Twenty-five hospitals included in the Perinatal Network of Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area., Population: Women giving birth in participating hospitals during a 1-year period., Methods: All cases of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and maternal mortality (MM) during pregnancy (including miscarriage and induced abortion), labour and puerperium were included. Data were collected prospectively., Main Outcome Measures: Identification criteria, main causes and incidence of SMM; case-fatality rates, morbidity-mortality index and effective intervention's use rate., Results: A total of 552 women with life-threatening conditions were identified: 518 with SMM, 34 with MM. Identification criteria for SMM were case-management (48.9%), organ dysfunction (15.2%) and mixed criteria (35.9%). Incidence of SMM was 0.8% (95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.73-0.87%) and hospital maternal death ratio was 52.3 per 100 000 live births (95% CI 35.5-69.1). Main causes of MM were abortion complications and puerperal sepsis; main causes of SMM were postpartum haemorrhage and hypertension. Overall case-fatality rate was 6.2% (95% CI 4.4-8.6): the highest due to sepsis (14.8%) and abortion complications (13.3%). Morbidity-mortality index was 15:1 (95% CI 7.5-30.8). Use rate of known effective interventions to prevent or treat main causes of MM and SMM was 52.3% (95% CI 46.9-57.7)., Conclusions: This study describes the importance of life-threatening obstetric complications that took place in public hospitals with comprehensive obstetric care and the low utilisation of known effective interventions that may decrease rates of SMM and MM. The ability to increase energy storage when food is abundant for later use during late gestation and early lactation is often considered the primary benefit of the capital breeding strategy (clustering conceptions during high food periods, HFP) that promotes reproductive success among females living in unpredictable environments. Capital breeding, however, may also enable preconceptive females to increase hormone production for ovulation, which has been linked to energetic condition in capital breeders, and/or allow females entering the subsequent HFP to increase their energetic condition in order to continue nursing unweaned infants. Here, we investigate whether capital breeding provides these additional benefits in 16 female Sanje mangabeys (Cercocebus sanjei) and determine the dietary strategies used to increase energetic condition (measured by urinary C-peptide: UCP) during the HFP. Fecal estradiol (fE2 ) and UCP were negatively correlated with number of cycles before conception (r = -0.591, r = -0.646, P < 0.01) and were highest in conceptive cycles. Both peri-conceptive (preconception and early gestation) and non-peri-conceptive (lactation) females increased energetic condition over the HFP (r = 0.612, r = 0.583, P < 0.001) by increasing dietary fat (r = 0.619, r = 0.703, P < 0.001) and, for non-peri-conceptive females, protein (r = 0.437, P < 0.001). Feeding intake rate (FIR) and time spent foraging and feeding did not change over the HFP; however, non-peri-conceptive females exhibited a faster FIR compared to peri-conceptive females (t = -2.324, P < 0.05), consuming almost twice as much food per unit time. The results of this study confirm that Sanje mangabeys benefit in multiple phases of the reproductive cycle by using capital breeding, which may explain how this strategy promotes female reproductive success., (© 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Fungalysins are secreted fungal peptidases with the ability to degrade the extracellular matrix proteins elastin and collagen and are thought to act as virulence factors in diseases caused by fungi. Fungalysins constitute a unique family among zinc-dependent peptidases that bears low sequence similarity to known bacterial peptidases of the thermolysin family. The crystal structure of the archetype of the fungalysin family, Aspergillus fumigatus metalloprotease (AfuMep), has been obtained for the first time. The 1.8 Å resolution structure of AfuMep corresponds to that of an autoproteolyzed proenzyme with separate polypeptide chains corresponding to the N-terminal prodomain in a binary complex with the C-terminal zinc-bound catalytic domain. The prodomain consists of a tandem of cystatin-like folds whose C-terminal end is buried into the active-site cleft of the catalytic domain. The catalytic domain harbouring the key catalytic zinc ion and its ligands, two histidines and one glutamic acid, undergoes a conspicuous rearrangement of its N-terminal end during maturation. One key positively charged amino-acid residue and the C-terminal disulfide bridge appear to contribute to its structural-functional properties. Thus, structural, biophysical and biochemical analysis were combined to provide a deeper comprehension of the underlying properties of A. fumigatus fungalysin, serving as a framework for the as yet poorly known metallopeptidases from pathogenic fungi.

The three-dimensional X-ray crystal structure of carboxypeptidase A, a zinc-dependent hydrolase, covalently modified by a mechanism-based thiirane inactivator, 2-benzyl-3,4-epithiobutanoic acid, has been solved to 1.38 A resolution. The interaction of the thiirane moiety of the inhibitor with the active site zinc ion promotes its covalent modification of Glu-270 with the attendant opening of the thiirane ring. The crystal structure determination at high resolution allowed for the clear visualization of the covalent ester bond to the glutamate side chain. The newly generated thiol from the inhibitor binds to the catalytic zinc ion in a monodentate manner, inducing a change in the zinc ion geometry and coordination, while its benzyl group fits into the S1' specificity pocket of the enzyme. The inhibitor molecule is distorted at the position of the carbon atom that is involved in the ester bond linkage on one side and the zinc coordination on the other. This particular type of thiirane-based metalloprotease inhibitor is for the first time analyzed in complex to the target protease at high resolution and may be used as a general model for zinc-dependent proteases.

Human females, unlike most mammals, are sexually active outside of fertile periods. This decoupling of sexual behavior from its conceptive function has had an enormous impact on human social relationships, and yet we know little about why there was selection for nonconceptive mating. Here we examine one form of nonconceptive mating, the mating that occurs during pregnancy or post-conceptive (PC) mating, in wild western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla). Using a near complete mating record for five females during gestation, we show that pregnant females varied in the timing and frequency of mating, and used PC mating conditionally, synchronizing copulations to occur on days when other females mated, and refraining from mating for lengthy periods when no other females mated. As pregnant females mated exclusively with the same male before and after conception, and mated in response to group female (and not male) behavior, we conclude that western gorillas used PC mating as a form of female competition, and not to confuse paternity or to obtain immediate benefits from the male, as suggested earlier. The male initiated copulations preferentially with females of high rank, rather than distinguishing between pregnant and cycling females. Therefore, PC mating appears to be a strategy by which high-ranking pregnant females attempt to minimize male interest in other females, while reinforcing their own status and potentially delaying conception in others. These findings indicate that female-mating competition is more important than considered earlier, and may be a factor in the evolution of nonconceptive mating in humans.

While the situation of tissue donation and transplantation differs between Latin American and European countries, a common problem is tissue deficiency. Hence, at present, there is a pressing need to generate alternatives so as to increase the possibilities of obtaining the requested materials. Consequently, it would be of significant interest to establish an intercontinental network for tissue exchange, to improve international cooperation, and to help patients that need tissue transplantation, and to evaluate the feasibility of using an intercontinental network for the exchange of cryopreserved arteries (cryografts), preserving the arterial distensibility and ensuring a reduced native artery-cryograft biomechanical mismatch. Distensibility was studied in ovine arteries divided into three groups: intact (in vivo tests, conscious animals), fresh control (in vitro tests immediately after the artery excision, Uruguay), and cryografts (in vitro tests of cryopreserved-transported-defrosted arteries, Spain). Histological studies were performed so as to analyze changes in the endothelial layer and elastic components. The comparison between fresh control and cryografts showed that neither the cryopreservation nor the exchange network impaired the distensibility, despite the expected histological changes found in the cryografts. The comparison between intact and cryografts showed that the cryografts would be capable of ensuring a reduced biomechanical mismatch. The cryopreservation and the intercontinental network designed for artery exchange preserved the arterial distensibility. It could be possible to transfer cryografts between Latin America and Europe to be used in cardiovascular surgeries and/or for tissue banking reprocessing, with basic biomechanical properties similar to those of the fresh and/or native arteries.

We have identified and characterized a set of quinoline, naphthalene and quinazoline derivatives as inhibitors of metallocarboxypeptidases, a class of metal-dependent proteolytic enzymes. The aromatic organic compounds were selected from a high-throughput screening survey and, with some exceptions, showed a good correlation between inhibitory potency and docking energy value. The in vitro inhibition tests gave K(i) values in the lower micromolar range for metallocarboxypeptidases with different specificities, and a tendency to behave as more powerful inhibitors of CPB was observed for most of the compounds tested. The kinetic results were further analyzed by structural analysis via molecular docking. The most potent aromatic organic inhibitor docks to human CPB mostly through burial of its hydrophobic moiety deep into the enzyme's active site cleft and by interacting with the catalytic zinc ion. The significance of our results in designing inhibitors against disease-related CPs from the identified ligands is examined herein.

Carboxypeptidase A1 has been the subject of extensive research in the last 30 y and is one of the most widely studied zinc metalloenzymes. However, the three-dimensional structure of the human form of the enzyme is not yet available. This report describes the three-dimensional structure of human carboxypeptidase A1 (hCPA1) derived from crystals that belong to the tetragonal space group P4(3)2(1)2 and diffract to 1.6 angstroms resolution. A description of the ternary complex hCPA1-Zn2+-poly(acrylic acid) is included as a model of the interaction of mucoadhesive polymers with proteases in the gastrointestinal tract. The direct mode of interaction between poly(acrylic acid) and the active site of the target protease was confirmed by in vitro inhibition assays. The structure was further analyzed in silico through the optimal docking-area method. The characterization of binding sites on the surface of hCPA1 and a comparison with other available carboxypeptidase structures provided further insights into the formation of multiprotein complexes and the activation mechanisms of carboxypeptidase zymogens. The high-resolution structure of hCPA1 provides an excellent template for the modelling of physiologically relevant carboxypeptidases and could also contribute to the design of specific agents for biomedical purposes.

Pamidronate (3-ammonium-1-hydroxypropylidene-1,1-bisphosphonate) is used clinically in the treatment of diseases affecting bone tissue. In the salt zinc pamidronate dihydrate, Zn(2+).2C(3)H(10)NO(7)P(2)(-).2H(2)O, pamidronate is a zwitterion with an overall charge of -1. The carbon chain adopts a trans conformation, separating maximally the positively charged N atom from the negative phosphonate groups. The Zn(2+) ion lies on an inversion center and is surrounded by a sixfold coordination sphere provided by two bidentate chelating zwitterions and two water molecules. The bidentate O.Zn.O bond angle is 92.70 (7) degrees, while the O.O bite distance is 3.018 (3) A.
