Magnetic fields are uniquely valuable for creating colloidal nanostructured materials, not only providing a means for controlled synthesis but also guiding their self‐assembly into distinct superstructures. In this study, a magnetothermal process for synthesizing hybrid nanostructures comprising ferrimagnetic magnetite nanorods coated with fluorescent perovskite nanocrystals is reported and their magnetic assembly into superstructures capable of emitting linear and circularly polarized light are demonstrated. Under UV excitation, the superstructures assembled in a liner magnetic field produce linear polarized luminescence, and those assembled in a chiral magnetic field exhibit strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with a glum value up to 0.44 (±0.004). The CPL is believed to originate from the dipolar interaction between neighboring perovskite nanocrystals attached to the chiral assemblies and the chiral‐selective absorption of the perovskite emission by the magnetite phase. The magnetic synthesis and assembly approaches and the resulting distinctive chiral superstructures are anticipated to open up new avenues for designing diverse functional chiroptical devices. Slow‐release platforms have attracted much attention due to their many applications, such as biomedical implants, plant fertilizers, and drug delivery systems. In this work, a green, cost‐effective, and scalable method is reported to synthesize colloidal hybrid nanospheres capable of releasing zinc ions in a highly controllable manner by encapsulating zinc ammonium citrate colloids with a layer of silica. The release rate of zinc ions from resulting core‐shell nanospheres can be conveniently tuned by changing the shell thickness and cross‐linking degree of the silica layer, the solvent composition, and the surrounding temperature. By integrating the temperature‐sensitive release behavior of the hybrid nanospheres, the color shift associated with the complexation of zinc ions with xylenol orange, and the photothermal conversion property of gold nanoparticles, a novel film capable of recording time‐sensitive color information is designed using direct laser writing and further demonstrated its application in steganography. Achieving high stability and excellent optical performance in complex environments is crucial for practical applications of magnetically responsive photonic crystals (MRPCs). It, however, remains a great challenge. This study demonstrates a polyphenol‐mediated strategy for synthesizing size‐controllable superparamagnetic magnetite (Fe3O4) colloid nanocrystal clusters (CNCs) that can be stably dispersed in various polar solvents to form MRPCs with brilliant structural colors for a long term. As tannic acid (TA) functions as a linker to robustly bind polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) chains to Fe3O4 surfaces, the MRPCs can maintain nearly constant diffraction wavelength and high reflectance for up to 4 years. The strong coordination between TA and Fe3+ inhibits crystal growth, ensuring the small primary crystal size and superparamagnetism of Fe3O4@TA‐PVP CNCs. Partial oxidation of TA accelerates the crystal nucleation and growth, reducing the overall CNC particle size, which can be utilized for controlling the particle size. Additionally, enhancing the dissolution of PVP before the solvothermal reaction improves the size monodispersity of the products, making the as‐constructed MRPCs ideal for practical applications in color display, sensors, anti‐counterfeiting, and camouflage. The Fe3O4@TA‐PVP CNCs with high stability and versatility for surface‐functionalization are also promising for magnetic resonance imaging, targeting drug delivery, recyclable catalysis, and magnetic nanomotors. Photonic crystals (PCs) constructed from colloidal building blocks have attracted increasing attention because their brilliant structural colors may find broad applications in paints, sensors, displays, and security devices. However, producing high‐quality structural colors on flexible substrates such as textiles in an efficient and scalable manner remains a challenge. Here a robust and ultrafast approach to produce industrial‐scale colloidal PCs by the shear‐induced assembly of liquid colloidal crystals of polystyrene beads pre‐formed spontaneously over a critical volume fraction is demonstrated. The pre‐crystallization of colloidal crystals allows their efficient assembly into large‐scale PCs on flexible fabric substrates under shear force. Further, by programming the wettability of the fabric substrate with hydrophilic–hydrophobic regions, this shear‐based assembly strategy can conveniently generate pre‐designed patterns of complex structural colors. This assembly strategy brings structural coloration to flexible fabrics at a scale suitable for commercial applications; therefore, it holds the potential to revolutionize the coloration technology in the textile industry. Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a toxic secondary metabolite produced by Fusarium graminearum. It is one of the most common feed contaminants that poses a serious threat to the health and performance of dairy cows. This study investigated the in vitro cytotoxicity of DON on bovine mammary epithelial cells (MAC‐T). DON at different concentrations (0.25, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1 or 2 μg/ml) inhibited the growth of MAC‐T cells after 24 hr of exposure (p < .001). DON at 0.25 μg/ml increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage (p < .05); decreased glutathione (GSH) levels (p < .001), total superoxide dismutase (T‐SOD) activity and total antioxidant capacity (T‐AOC; p < .01); and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration (p < .01) in MAC‐T cells after 24 hr of exposure. We also observed that DON increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in cells incubated for 9, 15 and 24 hr (p < .001). DON at 0.25 μg/ml triggered oxidative damage in MAC‐T cells. Furthermore, it induced an inflammatory response in the cells incubated for 9, 15 and 24 hr (p < .05) by increasing the mRNA expression levels of nuclear factor kappa B, myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88), tumour necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β), IL‐6, cyclooxygenase‐2 and IL‐8. We further examined the effect of DON on apoptosis. DON prevented normal proliferation of MAC‐T cells by blocked cell cycle progression in 24 hr (p < .001). In addition, the apoptosis rate measured using annexin V‐FITC significantly increased (p < .05) with increase in the mRNA expression level of Bax (p < .01) and increase in the Bax/Bcl‐2 ratio (p < .01) in cells incubated for 24 hr. In summary, DON exerts toxic effects in MAC‐T cells by causing oxidative stress, inducing an inflammatory response, affecting cell cycle and leading to apoptosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Smart materials with switchable optical properties may find interesting applications in designing advanced intelligent systems. Herein, the dynamic tuning of optical transmission is reported by controlling the orientation of 1D colloidal assemblies of magnetic nanostructures. Colloidal magnetic nanostructures of Fe3O4, including nanospheres, nanorods, and nanodiscs, are assembled into 1D chains under external magnetic fields. Magnetic tuning of the orientation of the nanochains results in a pronounced contrast in optical transmittance, which is strongly dependent on the size and shape of the primary nanostructures. Contrary to the intuitive expectation, the 1D chains of the nanospheres and nanorods exhibit lower transmittance when they are oriented parallel rather than perpendicular to the incident light, whereas the nanodisc counterpart responds oppositely due to the unique "edge‐to‐edge" assembly mode of the nanodiscs. The dynamic tuning of the optical transmittance through magnetic means is believed to have broad applications in the design of novel switchable optical devices. As an example, the incorporation of orientation‐dependent optical properties of 1D chains into the construction of intelligent polymer films with their transparency sensitive to rotation and bending is demonstrated.
