Shinta Hernandez, the new Dean of MC Online and Academic Support at Montgomery College, has embraced new challenges throughout her life. As an immigrant from Indonesia, she was raised in culturally diverse neighborhoods in Washington D.C.'s Maryland suburbs. Hernandez credits her experience at an all-girls school for teaching her how to stand up for herself as a woman. Despite being the only Asian person in many settings, Hernandez is not afraid to put herself out there and have difficult conversations. She overcame her fear of disappointing her parents and pursued a career in education, eventually becoming the highest-ranking Asian female in academic affairs at Montgomery College. Hernandez has also founded the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) task force and is dedicated to empowering others. She attributes her success to the support of mentors and her family, especially her father, who taught her not to let anyone bring her down. Hernandez and her husband run a youth soccer academy, where they aim to instill leadership and teamwork skills in their children. [Extracted from the article]
