L‐tryptophan, an essential amino acid for physiological processes, metabolism, development, and growth of organisms, is widely utilized in animal nutrition and human health as a feed additive and nutritional supplement, respectively. Despite its known benefits, safety concerns have arisen due to an eosinophilia–myalgia syndrome (EMS) outbreak linked to L‐tryptophan consumed by humans. Extensive research has established that the EMS outbreak was caused by an L‐tryptophan product that contained certain impurities. Therefore, safety validations are imperative to endorse the use of L‐tryptophan as a supplement or a feed additive. This study was conducted in tertiary hybrid [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] pigs to assess general toxicity and potential risks for EMS‐related symptoms associated with L‐tryptophan used as a feed additive. Our investigation elucidated the relationship between L‐tryptophan and EMS in swine. No mortalities or clinical signs were observed in any animals during the administration period, and the test substance did not induce toxic effects. Hematological analysis and histopathological examination revealed no changes in EMS‐related parameters, such as eosinophil counts, lung lesions, skin lesions, or muscle atrophy. Furthermore, no test substance‐related changes occurred in other general toxicological parameters. Through analyzing the tissues and organs of swine, most of the L‐tryptophan impurities that may cause EMS were not retained. Based on these findings, we concluded that incorporating L‐tryptophan and its impurities into the diet does not induce EMS in swine. Consequently, L‐tryptophan may be used as a feed additive throughout all growth stages of swine without safety concerns. A key step in the characterisation of bacterial strains used in the food and feed chain is the identification of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in their genomes. The presence of acquired AMR genes influences important aspects of the risk assessment, such as the applicability of the qualified presumption of safety (QPS) approach, which can have a direct impact on the data requirements. Aiming to implement the EFSA approach to discriminate between 'intrinsic' and 'acquired' AMR genes, a bioinformatics pipeline was developed and applied to the species of the genus Bacillus that are most frequently subjects of applications for regulated products submitted to EFSA. The results are presented as a catalogue of genes indicating their abundance and distribution among complete and confirmed genomes publicly available for each species. Botanical preparations, such as essential oils are increasingly used as feed additives to improve the feed quality and animal health while reducing antibiotic use. Regarding safe usage of these preparations for both humans and relevant animal species (e.g., food‐producing animals and pets), the toxicity of their constituents requires to be characterised. Particularly, p‐allylalkoxybenzene derivatives, that are present in certain botanical preparations, are known to be both genotoxic and carcinogenic and raise health concerns. However, little is known about species differences in sensitivity to the biological effects of these compounds, nor on the transfer from feed to food. Moreover, toxicokinetic properties and resulting toxicity of these compounds can be influenced by other substances present in the botanical preparations. Narrowing this knowledge gap, a NAM‐based approach was carried out for five representative p‐allylalkoxybenzenes: elemicin, estragole, methyleugenol, myristicin and safrole for six model species: cat, chicken, cow, human, pig and rat. The aim was to generate in vitro kinetic data from liver S9 incubations to explore potential species differences in bioactivation of p‐allylalkoxybenzenes combined with PBK modelling. The influence of terpenoids on the p‐allylalkoxybenzene‐bioactivation was investigated in parallel. In vitro bioactivation was observed in all species for phase I and phase II metabolism at the species and compound‐specific level. The presence of terpenoids revealed to be of minor influence on the p‐allylalkoxybenzene‐bioactivation. The PBK model simulations for two p‐allylalkoxybenzenes revealed that all species have a relatively higher formation of the 1'‐sulfooxy metabolite compared to that in rats (differences exceed the default uncertainty factor of 4). PBK model simulations of excretion/deposition of the p‐allylalkoxybenzenes and their related 1'‐hydroxy metabolite indicated limited transfer into milk, eggs and edible tissues. This case study demonstrates the applicability of NAMs to identify species differences in the metabolism of natural compounds from botanical preparations in support of risk assessment. Sida rhombifolia (S. rhombifolia) is a widely used herbal plant for humans because of its antioxidant and antibacterial effects, but its potential use as a feed additive for livestock has not been investigated. Twenty 350 days‐old Anyi tile‐like grey chickens were randomly divided into a control group (fed basal diet) and a treatment group (fed basal diet + 3% of S. rhombifolia), and these chickens were feed for 31 days. Dietary S. rhombifolia remarkably enhanced plasma antioxidants, including the significantly increased total antioxidant capability (p < 0.01), catalase (p = 0.04), and superoxide dismutase (p < 0.01) in the treatment group. Furthermore, dietary S. rhombifolia also modulated chicken cecal microbiota, including an increased microbial diversity (Shannon, p = 0.03; Chao1, p = 0.03) in the treatment group. Regarding taxonomic analysis, 34 microbial taxa showed significant differences between the two groups. Meanwhile, the dominant phylum Actinobacteriota (p = 0.04), and dominant genera Desulfovibrio (p = 0.04) and Olsenella (p = 0.02) were significantly increased after treatment, whereas the pathogenic genus Escherichia‐Shigella (p = 0.04) was significantly decreased after feeding S. rhombifolia. Summary: Hydrolyzable tannins (HTs), predominant polyphenols in oaks, are widely used in grape wine aging, feed additives, and human healthcare. However, the limited availability of a high‐quality reference genome of oaks greatly hampered the recognition of the mechanism of HT biosynthesis. Here, high‐quality reference genomes of three Asian oak species (Quercus variabilis, Quercus aliena, and Quercus dentata) that have different HT contents were generated.Multi‐omics studies were carried out to identify key genes regulating HT biosynthesis. In vitro enzyme activity assay was also conducted. Dual‐luciferase and yeast one‐hybrid assays were used to reveal the transcriptional regulation.Our results revealed that β‐glucogallin was a biochemical marker for HT production in the cupules of the three Asian oaks. UGT84A13 was confirmed as the key enzyme for β‐glucogallin biosynthesis. The differential expression of UGT84A13, rather than enzyme activity, was the main reason for different β‐glucogallin and HT accumulation. Notably, sequence variations in UGT84A13 promoters led to different trans‐activating activities of WRKY32/59, explaining the different expression patterns of UGT84A13 among the three species.Our findings provide three high‐quality new reference genomes for oak trees and give new insights into different transcriptional regulation for understanding β‐glucogallin and HT biosynthesis in closely related oak species. Post‐weaning diarrhea in pigs is a considerable challenge in the pig farming industry due to its effect on animal welfare and production costs, as well as the large volume of antibiotics, which are used to treat diarrhea in pigs after weaning. Previous studies have revealed loci on SSC6 and SSC13 associated with susceptibility to specific diarrhea causing pathogens. This study aimed to identify new genetic loci for resistance to diarrhea based on phenotypic data. In depth clinical characterization of diarrhea was performed in 257 pigs belonging to two herds during the first 14 days post weaning. The daily diarrhea assessments were used for the classification of pigs into case and control groups. Pigs were assigned to case and control groups based only on the incidence of diarrhea in the second week of the study in order to differentiate between differences in etiology. Genome‐wide association studies and metabolomics association analysis were performed in order to identify new biological determinants for diarrhea susceptibility. With the present work, we revealed a new locus for diarrhea resistance on SSC16. Furthermore, studies of metabolomics in the same pigs revealed one metabolite associated with diarrhea. Numerical techniques are developed to generate innovative lightweight designs, difficult to obtain with traditional product manufacturing technologies. The use of advanced engineering design software makes it possible to generate un‐conventional geometries, combining a standard density‐based topology optimization approach with lattice structure‐based methods. Deep knowledge of modeling aspects is required to improve the topology optimization processes currently performed in aerospace applications, as well as to achieve design solutions suitably prepared for additive manufacturing technologies. In the present work, algorithms based on solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) method are used to reduce the weight of parts by removing unnecessary material from the initial part design. Moreover, the integration of lattice structures in the topology optimization procedures allows for a further part weight reduction offering the possibility of exploiting the potentials of 3D printing in the fabrication of complex geometries. Piscirickettsiosis is the main cause of mortality in salmonids of commercial importance in Chile, which is caused by Piscirickettsia salmonis, a Gram‐negative, γ‐proteobacteria that can produce biofilm as one of its virulence factors. The Chilean salmon industry uses large amounts of antibiotics to control piscirickettsiosis outbreaks, which has raised concern about its environmental impact and the potential to induce antibiotic resistance. Thus, the use of phytogenic feed additives (PFA) with antibacterial activity emerges as an interesting alternative to antimicrobials. Our study describes the antimicrobial action of an Andrographis paniculate‐extracted PFA on P. salmonis planktonic growth and biofilm formation. We observed complete inhibition of planktonic and biofilm growth with 500 and 400 μg/mL of PFA for P. salmonis LF‐89 and EM‐90‐like strains, respectively. Furthermore, 500 μg/mL of PFA was bactericidal for both evaluated bacterial strains. Sub‐inhibitory doses of PFA increase the transcript levels of stress (groEL), biofilm (pslD), and efflux pump (acrB) genes for both P. salmonis strains in planktonic and sessile conditions. In conclusion, our results demonstrate the antibacterial effect of PFA against P. salmonis in vitro, highlighting the potential of PFA as an alternative to control Piscirickettsiosis. Aquaculture contributes a significant portion of the global aquatic biomass destined for human consumption. Bivalve and marine finfish aquaculture operations require sea‐based farm sites that result in considerable interactions with the natural environment. The addition of feed waste and physical structures (e.g., net pens and longline mussel culture) can provide an attractive artificial reef for many species and studies have shown both positive and negative effects on the surrounding ecosystem due to wild species interactions with aquaculture sites. Assessing these interactions can be complex, depending on the local ecosystem, and several monitoring techniques have been used to accurately determine associations of wild finfish and decapods to marine farms. In this review, we assessed the main methods used to monitor aquaculture‐ecosystem interactions. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are discussed and suggestions to mitigate shortfalls for future studies are outlined. It was evident that combining methodologies should be prioritised to lessen the impact of identified weaknesses of any given approach. Designing studies with complementary approaches may help attain robust data that can be used to further understand aquaculture‐ecosystem interactions and the underlying proximate mechanisms. Objective: Feed additives have attracted increased attention in aquaculture due to their ability to modulate fish gut microbiota, resulting in improved fish growth and immunity. This study assessed the effects of two synbiotics in Japanese Eel Anguilla japonica: Bacillus subtilis with mannooligosaccharides (MOS) and Enterococcus faecium with fructooligosaccharides (FOS). Methods: Six diets, including a control (CON) diet, oxytetracycline (OTC) diet, and four synbiotic diets (B. subtilis at 1 × 106 or 1 × 107 colony‐forming units [CFU]/g with MOS at 5 g/kg [BS6MO and BS7MO; collectively, BSMOS diets] and E. faecium at 1 × 106 or 1 × 107 CFU/g with FOS at 5 g/kg [EF6FO and EF7FO; collectively, EFFOS diets]), were fed to triplicate groups of 20 fish (average weight ± SD = 6.00 ± 0.07 g) for 8 weeks. Result: Fish fed the BSMOS diets showed significantly higher weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and feed efficiency compared to fish fed the CON and OTC diets, but the values were not significantly different from those of fish fed the EFFOS diets. Weight gain and SGR of fish that were given EFFOS diets were not significantly different from those of fish fed all other diets. Fish fed the OTC diet showed a higher mean aspartate aminotransferase level, although the difference was not statistically significant. The myeloperoxidase activity of fish fed the BS7MO diet was significantly higher than those of fish receiving all other diets, and the superoxide dismutase activity of fish fed the BS7MO diet was also significantly higher than that of fish fed the EF7FO diet. Overall, the BSMOS synbiotic diets were significantly more effective than the CON diet in enhancing fish survival against a Vibrio anguillarum challenge. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that synbiotics can be a preferable alternative to antibiotics in aquaculture. Humate may be a valuable livestock feed additive, with potential effects on nutrient utilisation and animal performance. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of K Humate S 100R supplementation on the feed intake, liveweight gain, and carcass parameters of Angus steers. Within individual pens, 40 weaned steers were allocated to four treatment groups (n = 10/potassium humate K Humate S100R, Omnia Specialities Australia) for 100 days. The treatment groups included Group 1, 35 g K Humate S100R/animal/day; Group 2, 70 g K Humate S100R/animal/day; Group 3, 140 g K Humate S100R/animal/day; and Control Group, which were not supplemented with K Humate S100R (0 g K Humate S100R/animal/day). Chemical and mineral composition of the feed ingredients, dry matter intake (DMI), and average daily weight gains were recorded. The steers were slaughtered as a single group at a commercial Australian abattoir. Standard measures for hot standard carcass weight, eye muscle area, fat depth and coverage, marbling, ossification, meat and fat colour, dressing percentage and loin pH values at 24‐hour postmortem were recorded. It was found that the steers allocated to Group 2 had higher DMI (P = 0.003) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P < 0.001) compared with those allocated to Group 1 and the Control Group. The MSA marbling score was lowest for steers allocated to the Control Group (P < 0.05) and comparable for those allocated to Groups 1, 2, and 3. Together, these results demonstrate that increased levels of K Humate S100R supplementation improved the carcass quality, via an increase in MSA. Xylanases from glycoside hydrolase (GH) families 10 and 11 are common feed additives for broiler chicken diets due to their catalytic activity on the nonstarch polysaccharide xylan. This study investigated the potential of an optimized binary GH10 and GH11 xylanase cocktail to mitigate the antinutritional effects of xylan on the digestibility of locally sourced chicken feed. Immunofluorescence visualization of the activity of the xylanase cocktail on xylan in the yellow corn of the feed showed a substantial collapse in the morphology of cell walls. Secondly, the reduction in the viscosity of the digesta of the feed by the cocktail showed an effective degradation of the soluble fraction of xylan. Analysis of the xylan degradation products from broiler feeds by the xylanase cocktail showed that xylotriose and xylopentaose were the major xylooligosaccharides (XOS) produced. In vitro evaluation of the prebiotic potential of these XOS showed that they improved the growth of the beneficial bacteria Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. The antibacterial activity of broths from XOS‐supplemented probiotic cultures showed a suppressive effect on the growth of the extraintestinal infectious bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae. Supplementing the xylanase cocktail in cereal animal feeds attenuated xylan's antinutritional effects by reducing digesta viscosity and releasing entrapped nutrients. Furthermore, the production of prebiotic XOS promoted the growth of beneficial bacteria while inhibiting the growth of pathogens. Phytogenic feed additives (PFAs) often referred to as phytobiotics or botanical feed additives, are natural compounds derived from various plants, herbs, spices and other botanical sources. These feed additives are intended to serve a variety of purposes, including an immune system regulator, an antimicrobial, an antimutagenic, an antioxidant and a growth promoter. They are composed of bioactive compounds extracted from plants, including essential oils, polyphenols, terpenoids and flavonoids. They are mostly utilized as substitute antibiotic growth promoters in nonruminant (swine and poultry) livestock production, owing to the prohibition of antibiotic usage in the feed industry. It has been thoroughly examined to ascertain their impact on intestinal health and activity, correlation with animals' effective health and well‐being, productivity, food security and environmental impact. The potential uses of these feed additives depend on the properties of herbs, the comprehension of their principal and secondary components, knowledge of their mechanisms of action, the safety of animals and the products they produce. They are gaining recognition as effective and sustainable tools for promoting animal health and performance while reducing the reliance on antibiotics in nonruminant nutrition. Their natural origins, multifaceted benefits and alignment with consumer preferences make them a valuable addition to modern animal farming process. However, because of their inconsistent effects and inadequate knowledge of the mechanisms of action, their usage as a feed additive has been limited. This review offers a comprehensive assessment of the applications of PFAs as an effective feed supplement in swine and poultry nutrition. In summary, this comprehensive review provides current knowledge, identifies gaps in research and emphasizes the potential of phytogenic additives to foster sustainable and healthier livestock production systems while addressing the global concerns associated with antibiotic use in livestock farming. The effects of heat stress (HS) caused by high temperatures continue to be a global concern in poultry production. Poultry birds are homoeothermic, however, modern‐day chickens are highly susceptible to HS due to their inefficiency in dissipating heat from their body due to the lack of sweat glands. During HS, the heat load is higher than the chickens' ability to regulate it. This can disturb normal physiological functioning, affect metabolism and cause behavioural changes, respiratory alkalosis and immune dysregulation in birds. These adverse effects cause gut dysbiosis and, therefore, reduce nutrient absorption and energy metabolism. This consequently reduces production performances and causes economic losses. Several strategies have been explored to combat the effects of HS. These include environmentally controlled houses, provision of clean cold water, low stocking density, supplementation of appropriate feed additives, dual and restricted feeding regimes, early heat conditioning and genetic selection of poultry lines to produce heat‐resistant birds. Despite all these efforts, HS still remains a challenge in the poultry sector. Therefore, there is a need to explore effective strategies to address this long‐lasting problem. The most recent strategy to ameliorate HS in poultry is early perinatal programming using the in ovo technology. Such an approach seems particularly justified in broilers because chick embryo development (21 days) equals half of the chickens' posthatch lifespan (42 days). As such, this strategy is expected to be more efficient and cost‐effective to mitigate the effects of HS on poultry and improve the performance and health of birds. Therefore, this review discusses the impact of HS on poultry, the advantages and limitations of the different strategies. EFSA collected data on co‐formulants contained in plant protection product (PPP) formulations for representative uses as part of applications for approval or renewal of active substances, to collate the information available during the peer review process. Information was extracted from pesticide active substances dossiers for which a peer review output was issued between January 2019 and March 2022, in which a total of 182 co‐formulants were found. Most of the data submitted on the identity and physicochemical properties of the co‐formulants are complete as required by Regulation (EU) 284/2013. The data related to (eco)toxicological properties mainly refers to the safety data sheet of the individual co‐formulants and, if available, to registration dossiers under Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (REACH). Fifty‐three % of the identified co‐formulants have been registered under REACH and about 80% of the 53% are registered for more than 1000 tonnes a year for which registrants are required to submit the most complete data set under REACH. For the remaining percentage, a more limited range of toxicological information is available: ECHA investigated whether they are exempted from registration under REACH. Co‐formulants contained in plant protection products may also be subject to other European legislation such as the regulations on biocidal active substances, food/feed additives, food contact materials, or are included in lists of excipients or cosmetic ingredients. On 28 September 2023, the European Commission requested EFSA to inform the European Commission if and which of the co‐formulants listed in this EFSA technical report, fulfils any of the criteria 1 to 9 in the Annex to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 574/2023 and is not already listed in Annex III to Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009. Out of the 182 co‐formulants, 8 meet at least one of the 9 criteria and are concluded as unacceptable. For twenty‐two co‐formulants no CAS/EC numbers were available in Volume 4 of the respective DAR/RAR. Observations highlighted in the present report can serve Member State risk assessors and risk managers to harmonise the assessment of co‐formulants in collaboration with the EU agencies (EFSA, ECHA). Zeolites are commercially available and naturally occurring minerals and synthetic materials, they are crystalline aluminosilicates with distinctive chemical and structural properties. Zeolites have a wide range of uses, including catalysis, gas separation, agronomy, animal feed additives, ecology, medicine, and cosmetics. The antibacterial activity of zeolite‐based nanofibers is fabricated and investigated in the current work utilizing a novel airbrushing method. Airbrushing is used to create zeolite‐loaded nanofibers with two groups of 5% and 10% zeolite, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Attenuation of Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR‐FT‐IR), contact angle measurement and an antibacterial test against Streptococcus mutans are used to characterize the fabricated zeolite‐loaded nanofibers. The SEM pictures demonstrate that the innovative strategy used in the study—air brushing—to effectively produce zeolite‐loaded nanofibers is a success. The morphology and diameter in nanometers is verified by SEM images for both groups. The ATR‐FT‐IR peaks confirm the blended compound and its chemical structure. The water contact angle measurement of the nanofibers of both groups show the hydrophobic qualities based on wettability. The findings of the zeolite nanofiber antibacterial test show a zone of inhibition (ZOI) of 19 mm compared to a positive control groups ZOI of 28 mm, indicating superior antibacterial activity against gram‐positive S. mutans. Based on the findings, it can be stated that zeolite nanofiber can be created by airbrushing and has antibacterial properties that can be utilized to stop dental caries, where S. mutans is the primary pathogenic organism. The dietary effects of the green microalga Tetraselmis suecica (TS) on the growth, digestive enzymes, immune and antioxidant responses, genes expression, and disease resistance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings were investigated. This microalga was mixed with the diet' ingredients at doses of 0.0 (the control), 5, 10, 15, and 20 g/kg diet and then fed to fish daily for 84 days. After the feeding trial, fish were experimentally challenged with Aeromonas sobria, infection and fish mortalities were recorded for another 10 days. Dietary TS significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced growth, digestive enzymes activities, and blood proteins, particularly at the level of 15 g/kg diet. Feeding the fish on 15 TS/kg feed exhibited highest mRNA expressions of GH and IGF‐1 genes as well as SOD, CAT, and GPx genes compared to other TS groups. Moreover, highest levels of hepatic antioxidant and immune indices were found in the treatment of 15 g TS/kg feed. Significant downregulation of IL‐1β and IL‐8 genes expression and significant upregulation of IL‐10 gene expression were observed in TS‐fed fish, principally in fish groups fed on 15−20 g TS/kg feed. Conversely, hepatic malondialdehyde levels, blood glucose, and the activities of transaminases (ALT and AST) were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in fish fed with 15−20 g TS/kg diet. Serum bactericidal activity against A. sobria was significantly higher in TS‐fed fish groups, and its highest levels were found in treatments of 15−20 g/kg diet. Of interest, the survival rates of fish groups fed diets with 10−20 g TS/kg feed were higher after the challenge with A. sobria infection than the control group. Accordingly, we can conclude that supplementing fish diets with a 15 g TS/kg diet enhanced the growth, antioxidant and immune activities, and resistance of Nile tilapia fingerlings to possible A. sobria infection. Chlorogenic acid (CGA), also known as 3‐caffeioylquinic acid or coffee tannin, is a water‐soluble polyphenol phenylacrylate compound produced through the shikimate pathway by plants during aerobic respiration. CGA widely exists in higher dicotyledons, ferns and many Chinese medicinal materials, and enjoys the reputation of 'plant gold'. Here, we summarized the source, chemical structure, biological activity functions of CGA and its research progress in pigs, aiming to provide a more comprehensive understanding and theoretical basis for the prospect of CGA replacing antibiotics as a pig feed additive. Background: Accurate dosing of feed additives is often required to evaluate their effects on rumen fermentation. This can be done using soluble but nonfermentable hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) hard capsules. Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of HPMC hard capsules on the extent and rate of in vitro gas production in eleven feeds. Methods: Six high‐fibre feeds and five concentrates, were weighed into syringes either directly or into HPMC capsules and incubated anaerobically in 30 mL buffered rumen fluid at 39°C. Data obtained from gas production measurements were fitted using the Gompertz model to obtain kinetic parameters for gas production. Results: HPMC hard capsules had no effect on the gas production of the blank sample and concentrate feeds. In contrast, high‐fibre feeds weighed in HPMC showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in total gas production and gas produced within 24 h of incubation. Conclusions: The use of HPMC hard capsules was found to be inappropriate for determining gas production kinetics because fermentation subsides at a certain point when peak fermentation is reached (at TMFR), resulting in a decrease in both total potential gas production and gas production within 24 h of incubation. Aquaculture is an essential source of protein and essential fatty acids for humans. However, the sustainable development of aquaculture faces numerous challenges, including a shortage of high‐quality feed and feedstuff, and a degeneration in the safety and quality of aquatic products. This review explores how the use of microalgae as an aquafeed ingredient may help to solve these problems. Microalgae are a vital food source for larval bivalves, shrimps, and fish due to their high nutritional value and suitable cell size. Particularly, bivalves rely on microalgae as a direct feed source throughout their entire life cycle. Microalgae are also indispensable food sources or nutrient supplements for secondary live prey, including rotifers, Artemia, and copepods. Microalgae containing a large amount of protein and lipid can be used as alternatives to fishmeal and fish oil in aquafeed. Moreover, microalgae are rich in ω‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, vitamins, and β‐glucan. These bioactive substances can be used as feed additives to improve the growth rate, skin coloration, antioxidant capacity, immunity, and survival rate of aquatic animals. However, the high production cost of microalgae limits its widespread application in aquaculture. Recent advancements in the technology used to culture microalgae intensively, especially fermentation technology, have significantly improved the production efficiency and decreased the production cost. Therefore, accelerating the use of microalgae as aquafeed is crucial if sustainable aquaculture is to be achieved. BACKGROUND: Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are providing interesting disruptive solutions for spray application of crop protection products with very‐low spray volumes (VLV) down to 8 L/ha that offer improved sustainability through reduced water volumes and reduced soil compaction. However, the efficacy of products can be reduced by the significantly lower crop/plant spray coverage and formulation designs that can compensate for this are highly important here. RESULTS: Suspension Concentrate (SC) formulations designed for VLV use containing and delivering low dose rates (g/ha) of organosilicone alkoxylate high‐spreading surfactants were found to result in leaf coverage of VLVs comparable to those observed at higher spray volumes. High spreading was observed on textured leaf surfaces containing sub‐micron sized epicuticular wax crystals. Greenhouse fungal disease studies showed enhanced efficacy with these SC formulations compared to standard SC formulations without these additives and maintained the observed increase in efficacy when applied at VLV. Alternatively, SC formulations without high spreading formulants but containing uptake promoting nonionic surfactants showed enhanced cuticle penetration through isolated cuticles at VLV in comparison to higher spray volumes, with coffee‐ring spray deposit microstructures present at VLVs. Similarly, greenhouse studies showed enhanced efficacy that was maintained at VLV relative to SCs without these additives. CONCLUSION: At VLVs, SC formulations applied at relatively low dose rates (g/ha) of formulants (adjuvants) enhancing spreading on the leaf surface and/or uptake of the active ingredient(s) maintained good spreading, uptake and biological efficacy in greenhouse studies overcoming the coverage limitations of SC formulations without these additives. L‐tryptophan has been utilized as a feed additive in animal nutrition to improve growth performance, as well as a dietary supplement to alleviate various emotional symptoms in humans. Despite its benefits, concerns regarding its safety arose following the outbreak of eosinophilia‐myalgia syndrome (EMS) among individuals who consumed L‐tryptophan. The causative material of EMS was determined to be not L‐tryptophan itself, but rather L‐tryptophan impurities resulting from a specific manufacturing process. To investigate the effect of L‐tryptophan and its impurities on humans who consume meat products derived from animals that were fed L‐tryptophan and its impurities, an animal study involving broiler chickens was conducted. The animals in test groups were fed diet containing 0.065%–0.073% of L‐tryptophan for 27 days. This study aimed to observe the occurrence of toxicological or EMS‐related symptoms and analyze the residues of L‐tryptophan impurities in meat products. The results indicated that there was no evidence of adverse effects associated with the test substance in the investigated parameters. Furthermore, most of the consumed EMS‐causing L‐tryptophan impurities did not remain in the meat of broiler chickens. Thus, this study demonstrated the safety of L‐tryptophan and some of its impurities as a feed additive. BACKGROUND: Lianhua Qingwen capsule is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula having antiviral and anti‐inflammatory activities. During capsule production, a large amount of byproducts will be yielded and disposed of as waste by burying. Resourceful utilization of these kinds of TCM byproducts as feed additives through stage‐based co‐fermentation using enzyme and probiotics could reduce environmental stress and resource shortage. The in vitro characterization and the supplementary effects of fermented TCM byproducts (FTCM) for weaned piglets (initial body weight: 7.23 ± 0.33 kg; dose: basal diet + 300 mg kg−1 FTCM) were investigated. RESULTS: Higher reducing sugar content, total flavonoid content, flavonoid compounds (e.g. tectoridin, tricetin, flavone, apigenin, naringenin) and total antioxidant activity were determined in the FTCM compared to spontaneously fermented and unfermented materials. Supplementation of the FTCM to piglets did not significantly affect the feed intake, body weight gain and feed/gain ratio, but significantly decreased a proinflammatory cytokine, IL‐8, and increased intestinal total antioxidant activity (TAC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Moreover, FTCM supplementation increased α‐diversity of the colonic microbiota accompanied with increased abundance of Prevotella genus and Treponema berlinense species. Correlation analysis indicates that T. berlinense is responsible for the decreased IL‐8 level and enhanced intestinal TAC and SOD activities which might be mediated by a homoserine lactone molecule (3‐oxo‐C14). CONCLUSION: Overall, the stepwise co‐fermentation enriched bioactive compounds within the TCM byproducts and their dietary supplementation did not generate any side effect on growth performance but displayed beneficial effects on enrichment of potential probiotic T. berlinense and relevant functions. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry. Inflammatory response induced by biological stress usually occurs in weaning piglets, it reduces the production performance of piglets and even causes death. Tert‐butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a food additive that has the effect of anti‐inflammation and anti‐oxidation. However, there are few reports related to the protective mechanisms of TBHQ on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced injury in intestinal porcine epithelial (IPEC‐J2) cells. Quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis, respectively, detected the mRNA levels and protein expressions related to pyroptosis, tight junction (TJ) protein and high‐mobility group box 1/toll‐like receptor 4/nuclear factor kappa‐B (HMGB1/TLR4/NF‐κB) axis. Localisation and expression of NOD‐like receptor pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3), HMGB1 and P‐NF‐κB proteins detected by immunofluorescence. The results showed that TBHQ (12.5 and 25 μM) can increase cell activity and reduce intracellular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in a dose‐dependent manner. LPS significantly decreases cell viability and increases the LDH level. However, pretreatment with TBHQ evidently increases cell viability and decreases the LDH level of IPEC‐J2 cells. In addition, treatment with LPS decreased the mRNA level and protein expression of zonula occludens‐1, occludin and claudin‐1, and increased the mRNA level and protein expression of pyroptosis and HMGB1/TLR4/NF‐κB axis. Interestingly, pretreatment with TBHQ increased the TJ protein expressions as well as decreased the mRNA level and protein expressions of pyroptosis and HMGB1/TLR4/NF‐κB axis. Moreover, the results of immunofluorescence showed that TBHQ significantly reduced the expression of NLRP3, HMGB1 and P‐NF‐κB in LPS‐induced injury of IPEC‐J2 cells. Therefore, we come to the conclusion that TBHQ attenuates LPS‐induced pyroptosis in IPEC‐J2 cells through downregulation of the HMGB1/TLR4/NF‐κB axis, TBHQ may become a potential feed additive for preventing inflammatory diarrhoea in piglets. The increase in global temperature and consumers' welfare has increased the use of phytogenic feed additives (PFA) to mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on chickens in recent years. Various bioactive compounds capable of improving the thermotolerance of broiler chickens during exposure to thermal challenges have been identified in different plant species and parts. This review is an overview of the roles of bioactive compounds of different PFA, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, antioxidants, growth‐promoting and immune‐modulating agents, in heat stress management in broiler chickens. Common PFA in use, particularly in tropical environments, are also discussed. An understanding of the roles of the PFA in chickens' thermotolerance could further stimulate interest in their use, thereby improving the birds' productivity and addressing consumers' concerns. The presence of coccidiostats in meat products represents an important topic because of the animal administration of these substances, authorized as feed additives for targeted species, in order to prevent and inhibit coccidiosis. Coccidiostats include both ionophores and synthetic molecules characterized by different chemical–physical properties such as polarity. Meat is a matrix characterized by many interfering compound groups, such as proteins, phospholipids, and fats. High‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) analysis allows the required selectivity and sensitivity for discriminating analytes and matrix interferences. For these reasons, an LC–MS/MS method for the analysis of coccidiostats in meat products was developed without SPE purification steps. The correct analyte quantification is allowed by matrix‐matched calibration. The method validation was performed by the replicated analysis of spiked meat samples at two different concentration levels (limit of quantification—LOQ—and a 10 times LOQ) in order to evaluate method recovery and repeatability, plus spiked samples at higher concentrations up to 10,000 μg/kg. Moreover, the metrological approach was used for the calculation of method uncertainty. The application of the developed method to real samples evidenced the presence of some non‐ionophores coccidiostats in the meat and liver of chicken and rabbit species. Although, the determined concentration was below the established MRLs, the monitoring of coccidiostats in the meat supply chain is confirmed as a good strategy in order to safeguard consumer health. Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), the most cultured crustacean in the world, has become one of the key species in the international aquatic trade accounting for 11.96% of the total aquaculture production value in 2020. The development of the aquafeed industry, especially the large‐scale use of fish meal (FM) and fish oil, contributed to promoting the expansion of shrimp production. However, the supply of FM has fluctuated at about 5 million tons per year affected by the El Nino during the last decades. This finite supply in combination with continued demand contributes to high prices, prompting the development and use of alternative protein sources. This review contributes to the development of appropriate FM replacement strategies in shrimp feed and summarises the status of research on alternative protein sources, including plant, animal and single‐cell proteins in commercial feeds for Pacific white shrimp. Furthermore, several key aspects of nutritional balances were mentioned including amino acid profiles, fatty acid nutrients and trace elements in low FM diets as well as some easily overlooked concepts that deserve attention such as epigenetics, feed processing characteristics, animal growth stages, and shrimp species improvement. Also, the prospects of future research are proposed including the application of advanced technologies (16S rRNA sequencing, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics), developments in the new feed additives, along with the optimisation of new protein sources and the establishment of a precise nutritional programming for shrimp. Species feeding lower at the food web like cyprinids (carp) are often advocated for sustainable aquaculture. However, their gastrointestinal biology (lack of stomach) has limited their acid‐peptic digestion, acid lysis of plants and invertebrate tissues, and phosphorus uptake. This review presents data from 118 articles on the use of plant‐based feed additives (PFAs) in Cyprinus carpio (common carp). Our review shows that most PFA research in carp is focused on improving feed and nutrient utilization efficiency along various levels (in vivo digestibility, metabolizability to in situ nutrient loading), while other half is focused on ensuring animal welfare standards (biomass, immunity, welfare). Several reviewed plant‐based additives however tend to do both. The PFAs include essential oils (EOs), plant‐part extracts (PPEs), medicinal plants (herbs) and spices. The effective inclusion rate of EOs is lower (0.5%–0.75%). Whereas PPEs, herbs and spices work at a generic inclusion rate of 2%–5% in carp feeds. Even at an optimum inclusion rate, there are factors controlling PFAs efficacy such as methods of preparation (reviewed). PFAs like lemon beebrush, geranium, dill, Rosemary pepper and common mallow with/without certain pre‐conditions are better to avoid in cyprinid diets. Although certain PFAs may potentially alter organoleptic qualities of carp flesh or might assist in training carp immunity, information on these aspects is limited. The review also provides a quick guide to researchers and feed companies interested in exploring the potential of PFAs in C. carpio aquaculture. Fishmeals (FM) are the most superior protein sources in aquafeed. World‐wide growing demand and limited supply of FM limit its use as sole protein sources in aquafeed and force fish nutritionists to develop alternate protein‐based aquafeeds. However, increasing alternate proteins over a certain percentage reduces fish performance. Many attempts have been made (viz., manipulation of processing technology of feed ingredients and feed formulations, supplementation strategy) to overcome the negative effects of increasing alternative protein inclusion in aquafeeds. Among them, supplementation of functional feed additives (FuFAs) has received promising attention. Recently, several FuFA (nucleotides, organic acid, probiotics, prebiotics, and certain amino acids) have been administrated in alternative protein‐based aquafeeds and demonstrate increased efficiency of alternative protein utilization along with improved fish growth and health performances. However, numerous gaps remain in existing knowledge about the administration of exogenous FuFA in alternative protein‐based aquafeeds, including the effects on digestion, age/size‐related responses, species variations, absorption, metabolism, and influences on physiological responses. Application of biochemical and molecular technologies is important to better understand the underlying mechanisms of FuFA functions in alternate protein‐based aquafeed to improve fish and shrimp performance. Efforts are also needed by researchers and industrialists regarding production technologies to reduce functional feed supplement costs. Moreover, in‐depth research knowledge is needed considering the use of functional feeds to combat fish diseases and reduce dependence on antibiotics and chemical therapeutants, thereby making aquaculture more eco‐friendly. Growing awareness of fossil depletion, plastic pollution, and food spoilage has led to the exploration of bioresources as alternatives for producing packaging films for highly perishable food. In this study, we utilized a novel integrated process using natural‐based solvents to isolate cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin from cattail leaves, an abundant invasive plant. The process yielded cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin with recovery yields of 96.2 ± 1.2%, 92.5 ± 1.6%, and 94.3 ± 0.7% and purities of 96.3 ± 0.6%, 97.7 ± 0.9%, and 98.9 ± 0.5%, respectively. Spherical nanoparticles (60–90 nm) were synthesized through ultrasonication and their structural purity were confirmed by FTIR, XRD, and XPS analyses. These nanoparticles were incorporated as reinforcement into chitosan (C) films. Cellulose nanoparticles (CNP) and lignin nanoparticles (LNP) significantly enhanced film tensile strength (up to 27% at 1.5% loading), while hemicellulose nanoparticles (HNP) increased film elongation (up to 42%). The complex structures of HNP and LNP promoted higher free radical formation, resulting in enhanced antioxidant activity of up to 80% and 82%, respectively. LNP‐reinforced films exhibited superior antimicrobial properties due to their polyphenolic structure. Preservation tests were conducted by packaging poultry meat in the films and refrigerating it for 30 days. Poultry meat packed in LNP‐reinforced film maintained its quality within permissible limits throughout the entire 30 day period, while LDPE, plain chitosan, C‐CNP, and C‐HNP films reached consumable limits on the 5th, 10th, 15th, and 25th days, respectively. The drop in temperature during the winter months can lead to a decrease in growth, induce metabolic stress, and increase mortality incidences. The present study evaluated the potential of functional feed additives in mitigating the negative impacts of winter‐rearing conditions in striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus). Four test diets were evaluated over a twelve‐week feed trial: (1) zinc‐acetate (Zn‐acetate), (2) selenomethionine (Se‐Met), (3) β‐glucan, and (4) control with no added feed additive. The survival rate in the β‐glucan (95.00%) and Zn‐acetate (93.30%) dietary groups was higher than the control (78.30%) and Se‐Met (85.00%). Fish fed with the β‐glucan had the highest weight gain (20.75% increase), specific growth rate (13.75% increase), and lower feed conversion ratio (9.64 % decrease). However, feed additives did not influence the fatty acid profiles or whole‐body proximate composition. Although, Zn‐acetate and Se‐Met had higher body ash content. Serum cortisol and glucose levels were lower in β‐glucan and Zn‐acetate than in other treatment groups. All feed additives resulted in higher superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase activity in the liver and muscle. Background: This study evaluated the effect of spray‐dried blood plasma (SDP) as a feed additive for the replacement of antibiotics in swine production. The treatments were used as strategic pulses of either antibiotics or SDP in the feed of swine during the growth and termination phases. The experimental design was conducted by 4 dietary treatments with a total of 1456 swine selected just after leaving the nursery and evaluated for 122 days until slaughter. Results: The feed with the addition of the standard medication protocol (antibiotics) and without the inclusion of SDP had the highest feed intake (289.73 ± 3.04 kg) and reached a feed conversion of 2.57 ± 0.02 kg feed consumed per kg weight gained. Weight gain during the period of 0–122 days for the treatment with three pulses of SDP with (114.12 ± 0.64 kg) and without antibiotics (114.26 ± 1.01 kg) was higher than the control treatment (111.46 ± 1.10 kg, without antibiotics and SDP). Furthermore, the antibiotic‐based treatment associated with SDP showed a 7.76% increase in weight gain when compared with the control group. Furthermore, there was a nonsignificant difference in the mortality of animals and in the index for pneumonia and ulcer score. Conclusion: The application of SDP as a feed additive in swine at the growth and termination phases, combined with antibiotics, favored feed intake and weight gain and could be a promising alternative to upgrade zootechnical parameters in swine production. Weaning is a critical period in raising pigs. Novel animal feed additives that promote gut health and regulate immune function of piglets without antibiotics are needed. In this study, we aimed to test the ability of mesobiliverdin IXα‐enriched microalgae (MBV IXα‐enriched microalgae) to eliminate reliance on antibiotics to promote intestinal health in piglets. Eighty 28‐day‐old weaned piglets were randomly allocated to four groups each with four replicate pens and five piglets per pen. The dietary treatments were a basal diet as control (NC), basal diet plus 0.05% tylosin (PC), basal diet plus 0.1% or 0.5% MBV IXα‐enriched microalgae as low (MBV‐SP1) or high (MBV‐SP2) dose respectively. All treated animals showed no significant differences in live weight, average daily gain and feed efficiency compared to control animals. Histological examination showed that MBV‐SP1 and particularly MBV‐SP2 increased the ratio of villus height to crypt depth in the jejunum and ileum compared to NC (p < 0.05). Similarly, tylosin treatment also increased villi lengths and the ratio of villus height to crypt depth in the jejunum and ileum compared to the NC (p < 0.05). MBV‐SP1 and particularly MBV‐SP2 reduced the levels of inflammatory cytokines interleukin‐6 and tumour necrosis factor‐alpha in the small intestine. MBV‐SP2 and tylosin similarly reduced the lipid peroxidation marker (TBARS value) in the duodenum and ileum. In conclusion, feed supplementation with MBV IXα‐enriched microalgae improved gut health by villus height and production of immunomodulators that correlated with down‐regulated secretion of inflammatory cytokines. On the background of antibiotic‐free livestock husbandry, animal nutritionists are trying to find alternatives to antibiotics. Many herbs have been developed for animal diets to replace antibiotics. Humulus Scandens (HS) is also known as Humulus japonicus and Japanese hop in English, lü Cao (葎草) in Mandarin Chinese and kanamugura (カナムグラ) in Japanese. It is a traditional Chinese medicine with good environmental adaptability. It can grow rapidly and cover any area. Its high yield, strong vitality and medical value allow its potential to be used as an exogenous additive for animal diets to replace antibiotics. However, the knowledge about this herb is limited at present. Additive manufacturing techniques allow the customized design of medical devices according to the patient's requirements. Enteroatmospheric fistula is a pathology that benefits from this personalization due to its extensive clinical variability since the size and morphology of the wound differ extensively among patients. Standard prosthetics do not achieve proper isolation of the wound, leading to a higher risk of infections. Currently, no effective personalized technique to isolate it has been described. In this work, we present the workflow for the design and manufacture of customized devices adapted to the fistula characteristics as it evolves and changes during the treatment with Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT). For each case, a device was designed with dimensions and morphology depending on each patient's requirements using white light scanning, CAD design, and additive manufacturing. The design and manufacture of the devices were performed in 230.50 min (184.00–304.75). After the placement of the device, the wound was successfully isolated from the intestinal content for 48–72 h. The therapy was applied for 27.71 ± 13.74 days, and the device was redesigned to adapt to the wound when geometrical evolutionary changes occur during the therapy. It was observed a decrease in weekly cures from 23.63 ± 10.54 to 2.69 ± 0.65 (p = 0.001). The fistulose size was reduced longitudinal and transversally by 3.25 ± 2.56 cm and 6.06 ± 3.14 cm, respectively. The wound depth also decreased by 1.94 ± 1.08 cm. In conclusion, customization through additive manufacturing is feasible and offers promising results in the generation of personalized devices for the treatment of enteroatmospheric fistula. This report describes work to establish principles and procedures that could be applicable to the safety assessment of the use of mixtures of natural origin in the manufacture of food contact materials (FCM). There is increasing interest in the use of substances obtained from renewable biological resources (non‐fossil) to manufacture materials and articles intended for food contact. They may be single substances or simple well‐defined mixtures, but more commonly they are complex mixtures with a substantial fraction that is uncharacterised. The source materials are plant biomass and (to a lesser degree) animal biomass. Natural compounds and/or complex mixtures are assessed in several sectors under the EFSA remit dealing with regulated chemicals, including novel foods, food enzymes, botanicals, food and feed additives, food flavours and FCM. These sectors have been consulted to learn from their experience. Waiving part of the data requirements for substances derived from edible food sources (e.g. food as such or the non‐eaten parts, and or food ingredients) seems acceptable. Substances that migrate and give rise to concern (based on their chemical, physical or toxicological properties), but are already present in the diet, should not be (re‐)evaluated, but rather, their exposure from FCMs should be compared with that from the diet. All other components and impurities in the mixture, should be assessed using the established FCM guidelines and cross‐cutting EFSA guidance documents. The report concludes with recommendations on several topics that have a cross‐cutting character and which may benefit from further considerations and developments by the EFSA Scientific Committee. Background: Supplementing poultry diets with certain natural phytogenic additives has positive impacts on performance parameters like feed intake, egg production and quality of layer hens. Objectives: The study aimed to examine how supplementing papaya seed as phytogenic feed additive (PFA) to the diets of layer chickens affected their egg production, quality and blood serum biochemical parameters. Methods: One hundred twenty 28‐week‐old Bovans brown laying hens were randomly assigned to one of four treatments with varying levels of papaya seed supplementation at 0 g/kg (T1), 5 g/kg (T2), 10 g/kg (T3) and 15 g/kg (T4) in a complete randomized design. Result: Layer chickens supplemented with 0.5% (T2), 1% (T3) and 1.5% (T4) papaya seed as a PFA had significantly (p < 0.05) improved dry matter intake, egg production%, egg mass and feed conversion. On the other hand, papaya seed supplementation decreased (p < 0.05) the bodyweight gain of laying hens. Papaya seed supplementation significantly (p < 0.05) increased egg weight, length, width, yolk height and yolk colour compared to the control group. Serum total protein on T4 and liver enzyme of alkaline phosphatase on T3 were significantly greater (p < 0.05) than in the control group. However, there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in serum albumin, glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride and aspartate aminotransferase levels among treatments laying hens. Conclusion: Papaya seed can be a potential candidate as a PFA at 5–15 g/kg of the basal diet to improve egg‐laying performance and quality without deteriorating effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antibiotic growth promoters have been utilized in broiler nutrition to alleviate the negative effects of the pathogenic microbes to promote performance. However, after the prohibition of antibiotics because of the increasing disclosure related to public health issues, various products have been developed as alternatives. This study was carried out to determine the effects of medium‐chain fatty acids (MCFAs) or phytobiotics (essential oils [EOs] and alkaloids [ALKs]), blended feed additives on the growth performance, jejunum histomorphology, and cecal microbiota of broiler chickens. A total of 765 male Ross 308 chicks were randomly distributed into 5 experimental groups, each having 9 replicates with 17 chicks. The experimental procedures were as follows: a control group without supplementation (T1); control group+ MCFAs and EOs blend (T2); control group+ different EOs blend (T3); control group+ ALK sanguinarine (T4); and control group+ EOs and ALK piperine mixture (T5). The results showed that, broilers fed with MCFAs blended with EOs had significantly greater body weight gain during overall period in comparision to the control and T3 groups. Further, only MCFAs blended with EOs group significantly improved jejnum morphology in comparison with the control group (p ≤ 0.05). Besides, the MCFAs blended with EOs group significantly elevated propionate, acetate and butyrate concentration, and decreased the concentration of branch chain fatty acids in caecum (p ≤ 0.05). The results indicated that, the combination of MCFAs and EOs seems to have improvement effects and could be preferred as an efficient feed additive in broiler production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are regarded as the most promising new generation of green energy technology due to their outstanding device performance and simple processing technology. The strain in the active layer of PSCs is primarily caused by lower interionic and intercrystal forces, leading to an increase in defect density and high recombination of carriers, which can negatively impact the performance and stability of perovskite devices. Herein, the origins of strain in perovskite film of solution processing are revealed by conducting strain tests and characterizing photophysical processes. The impacts of strain on optical and electrical properties are summarized, including its effects on molecular interaction force, band structure, defect formation energy, activation energy of ion migration, phase segregation, and phase transition. To mitigate these negative effects, the review introduces several methods for modulating strain in perovskite films, including crystallization, component tailoring, adding additives, and modifying contact layers, which are aimed at improving carrier transport and collection efficiency. It is believed that these approaches will provide scientists with new ways of thinking and system schemes for improving the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells. Feline oral squamous cell carcinoma (FOSCC) is an aggressive cancer in domestic cats that has no effective treatment option when advanced. Preventative or early diagnostic measures are thus crucial. FOSCC is also a model for human head and neck SCC (HNSCC); strong risk factors in HNSCC include exposure to alcohol, tobacco, areca nut, and high‐risk human papillomavirus. Previous studies have identified flea collar and tobacco smoke exposure, feeding canned tuna, canned cat food and cat foods with chemical additives, living in a rural environment, and having outdoor access as risk factors for FOSCC but there was no overlap in the risk factors between studies. In our study, risks for FOSCC were evaluated in an online epidemiologic survey study in 67 cats with FOSCC and 129 control cats. Clumping clay cat litter and flea collar use were significant risk factors for FOSCC on multiple logistic regression with odds ratios of 1.66 (95% CI 1.20–2.30) and 4.48 (95% CI 1.46–13.75) respectively. Crystalline silica is a carcinogen that may be present in all clay cat litters and tetrachlorvinphos is a carcinogen that is present in the most commonly used flea collars in our study. Fishmeal is the most preferred protein source in aquafeed industry due to its balanced amino acid and fatty acid profile, but its limited global supply and high price value, necessitates researchers to focus on sustainable alternative sources of protein and plant‐based feed, to meet the growing demand of fish feed. Phytate is a reservoir of phosphorus present in the plants; however, its chelating ability makes it anti‐nutritional. Phytate forms complexes with minerals, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, confining their accessibility in fish feeds, hence, additional dietary nutrients are required in the fish feed to overcome nutritional deficiencies. The elimination of phytate‐phosphorus through animal faeces and its pass on to aquatic bodies leads to enrichment of nutrients, eutrophication and algal blooms. Microbial phytase segregates phosphorus, minerals, proteins and lower inositol phosphates from phytate. The supplementation of fish feed with microbial phytase enhances the digestibility of minerals, due to which less nutrients are excreted in the faeces; therefore, minimizing pollution in water bodies. Monogastric and agastric animals inherently exhibit the deficiency of phytase; hence, supplementation of dietary material with phytase has been an emerging choice to make dietary nutrients available for fish. Moreover, microbial phytases have a broad pH range and are thermostable, which makes them an excellent choice for commercial fish feed production. Additionally, microbial phytase improves fish growth as these enzymes enhance nutrients bioavailability and their digestion. In recent decades, microalgal biotechnology has become one of the most valuable sources of functional feed additives. Many microalgae, such as Chlorella sp., Tetraselmis sp., Navicula sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Porphyridium cruentum, Nannochloropsis gaditana, Dunaliella salina, Lobosphaera sp. and Schizochytrium sp., have been considered valuable in fish species as they enhance immunostimulant abilities, resistance against infectious diseases and tolerance to environmental stress. For instance, immunological parameters (i.e., respiratory burst activity, phagocytic capacity and IgM production) and immune‐related gene expression (i.e., proinflammatory cytokines) in fish have been manly analysed, demonstrating modulation upon microalgal administration. Moreover, disease resistance to microbial pathogen challenges has also been evidenced in several studies. In this context, the present literature review aims to assemble and reveal published research about the immunostimulant properties of some microalgae and their compounds in the immune systems of farmed fish species, whether model or new, with a high potential for aquaculture. Overall, it remains unclear how microalgae or their bioactive compounds may induce or modulate signals in the immune systems of fish species; however, the inclusion of different microalgal species in fish feed has improved the immune response and increased survival to stress conditions and infectious challenges. Probiotics are widely used in aquaculture. This article aims to study the effect of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens LSG2‐8 on the intestinal barrier function of Rhynchocypris lagowskii. B. amyloliquefaciens LSG2‐8 were added to R. lagowskii basal diets (CK) as additives at four concentrations: 1.0 × 106 (D‐6), 1.0 × 107 (D‐7), 1.0 × 108 (D‐8) and 1.0 × 109 (D‐9) CFU g−1 by dry weight of basal diet. After a 56‐day feeding experiment, the activities of intestinal digestive enzymes and immunity‐related enzymes of R. lagowskii on group D‐6, D‐7, D‐8 and D‐9 diet were significantly higher than the control (P < 0.05). In molecular experiments, the authors found that the levels of TGF‐β mRNA, IL‐10 mRNA, ZO‐1 mRNA and claudin‐3 mRNA in group D‐8 R. lagowskii were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those of the control and other groups. Furthermore, the levels of IL‐1β and IL‐8 mRNA of R. lagowskii on group D‐6, D‐7, D‐8 and D‐9 diet were significantly lower than those of the control (P < 0.05). In addition, the authors found that B. amyloliquefaciens LSG2‐8 can regulate the intestinal flora balance and improve the intestinal structure of R. lagowskii. In conclusion, B. amyloliquefaciens LSG2‐8 can improve the intestinal barrier function of R. lagowskii and can be used as a feed additive in aquaculture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aimed to assess the impact of probiotic supplementation in the broiler diet on growth performance, nutrient utilization, noxious gas emissions, excreta micromiota and meat quality. One thousand six hundred and twenty male Ross 380 broilers (one‐day‐old, body weight, 42 ± 0.5 g and 5‐week trial) were arbitrarily chosen and assigned to three nutritive treatments (basal diet and basal diet included with 0.1%, and 0.2% probiotic mixture [Bacillus subtilis 7.0 × 107 cfu/g, Bacillus licheniformis 4.1 × 107 cfu/g]) with 30 duplicates (18 birds each). Probiotic inclusion linearly increased (p < 0.05) broiler body weight gain (BWG) during Phases 1, 2 and the overall period and decreased (p < 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR) linearly on Phase 2 and the overall period. However, feed intake (FI) and mortality rate remained unaffected (p > 0.05). Though nutrient digestibility of nitrogen (N) tendency to increase (p < 0.05), dry matter (DM) and energy (E) did not influence (p > 0.05). Inclusion of a probiotic supplement linearly increased (p < 0.05) Lactobacillus and reduced Salmonella (p < 0.05) counts in broilers. Moreover, broilers fed a diet supplement with probiotic addition linearly decreased (p < 0.05) NH3, H2S, C2O and acetic acid emissions. The graded level of probiotic addition linearly reduced (p < 0.05) cooking loss and the tendency to decrease (p < 0.05) weight of bursa of Fabricius, but had no effect (p > 0.05) on other meat quality measures. These findings indicated that increasing the level of probiotics in feed could improve growth efficiency, nutrient absorption, microbial index, meat quality and reduce gas emissions in broilers. Biomass losses and circularity of aquaculture farm‐to‐fork are reviewed in this article, taking the example of an economically developed but land‐locked territory in Central Europe. We found that some waste valorization channels of locally farmed and slaughtered fish biomass are already functioning in the region (mostly for pet food, hunting bait). There is neither control nor information on how much local aquaculture farm‐to‐fork losses are upcycled to the local human food chain. Despite most of them qualify in 'category‐3' animal by‐products (useable for aquafeed) or preventable losses. Factors to improve farm‐to‐fork resource use efficiency 'locally' include: (a) 'at farm' (supplementary feeding, captive culture conditions, fat content, breed, rested harvest techniques, harvesting season); (b) 'towards fork' (purging duration, acclimatization before slaughtering, stunning efficacy, bleeding and filleting relative to rigour mortis, additive‐based cleaning, pre‐cooling, boned or deboned, grinding or baadering); (c) 'at fork' (coating‐ or GRAS additives‐based preservation, packaging, modern hurdle systems, freezing rate, interferences of freezing apparatus or packaging on freezing, storage temperature). From farm‐to‐fork, it is essential to understand that most fish processing by‐products can be made edible or valuable by other means. Better utilization strategies exist via low‐cost value‐added fish products, innovative dishes or utility products (e.g., feedstuff, fertilizers, industrial products, luxury items). Although upcycling to human food chain is priority, technological hurdles (prone to spoilage, bones in product, taste, safety) are associated with edible products but are solvable. In animal nutrition, the interest for novel feed additives has expanded with elevating industry standards and consumer awareness besides the demand for healthy animal‐derived food products. Consumer and animal health are leading concerns dictating the importance of novel animal feed additives. Berberine (BBR) is a natural pentacyclic isoquinoline alkaloid that has exhibited diverse pharmacological properties, including metabolism‐regulating, hepatoprotective, and inflammatory alleviative in addition to its antioxidant activity. Despite detailed information on cellular mechanisms associated with BBR therapeutics, and strong clinical evidence, only a few studies have focused on BBR applied to animal nutrition. However, great pieces of evidence have shown that dietary BBR supplementation could result in improved growth performance, enhanced oxido‐inflammatory markers, and mitigated metabolic dysfunctions in both monogastric and ruminant animals. The data discussed in the present review may set the basis for further research on BBR in animal diets for developing novel strategies aiming to improve animal health as well as products with beneficial properties for humans. In the era of intensification of fish farms, the high‐fat diet (HFD) has been applied to promote growth and productivity, provide additional energy and substitute partial protein in fish feeds. Certainly, HFD within specific concentrations was found to be beneficial in boosting fish performance throughout a short‐term feeding. However, excessive dietary fat levels displayed vast undesirable impacts on growth, feed efficiency, liver function, antioxidant capacity and immune function and finally reduced the economic revenue of cultured fish. Moreover, studies have shown that fish diets containing a high level of fats resulted in increasing lipid accumulation, stimulated endoplasmic reticulum stress and suppressed autophagy in fish liver. Investigations showed that HFD could impair the intestinal barrier of fish via triggering inflammation, metabolic disorders, oxidative stress and microbiota imbalance. Several approaches have been widely used for reducing the undesirable influences of HFD in fish. Dietary manipulation could mitigate the adverse impacts triggered by HFD, and boost growth and productivity via reducing blood lipids profile, attenuating oxidative stress and hepatic lipid deposition and improving mitochondrial activity, immune function and antioxidant activity in fish. As well, dietary feed additives have been shown to decrease hepatic lipogenesis and modulate the inflammatory response in fish. Based on the literature, previous studies indicated that phytochemicals could reduce apoptosis and enhance the immunity of fish fed with HFD. Thus, the present review will explore the potential hazards of HFD on fish species. The wetting behaviour of the spray and the biological efficacy of Cu2+ active ingredients in agrochemical formulations may be enhanced by tank‐mix additives. We investigated how three BREAK‐THRU® additives (BT301: biodegradable, BT133 and BT420: bio‐based and biodegradable) tank‐mixed with commercial copper preparations influenced the spray distribution, leaf uptake and biological efficacy of copper additive mixtures against apple scab and apple powdery mildew under controlled conditions. We quantified the synergetic effects of these additives in foliar applications. In addition, we determined the phytotoxic potential and evaluated their impacts on photosynthetic activity, non‐photochemical quenching and ROS activity. The additives BT301 and BT420 strongly reduced surface tension and contact angle of copper treatments. The fluorescence observations revealed that BT301 achieved better spreading of copper formulation with more complete coverage of the leaf surface than BT420 and BT133, whereas 'coffee‐ring' spreading was observed with BT133. The additive BT301 showed an increase in relative fluorescence area, indicating higher ROS production as a signal of intra‐cellular tissue activity. The photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) was not negatively influenced by copper or additive treatment. Thus, we observed no phytotoxic effects of copper‐additive mixtures on apple leaves at treatment doses of 4 g Cu2+ L−1. All copper treatments reduced apple scab infections significantly, by 53%–76%. Interestingly, addition of BT301 to copper preparations showed the strongest biological efficacy (83% reduction) against Venturia inaequalis, whereas addition of BT420 showed the strongest effect against Podosphaera leucotricha (89% infection reduction). The synergetic effects of additives on the biological efficacy without phytotoxic effects on plants may have potential for reducing copper loads in horticultural production systems. Astaxanthin has been widely applied in feed additives and the medical industry due to its antioxidant, coloring, and health‐promoting properties. Traditional processes for astaxanthin production mainly include natural extraction and chemical synthesis; however, they cannot meet the growing market demand and consumers' requirements for natural products. Microbial synthesis of astaxanthin offers a promising alternative. Many natural sources of astaxanthin, such as Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous, and genetically modified yeasts, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yarrowia lipolytica and Kluyveromyces marxianus have been isolated and contructed. Various strategies such as mutagenesis, genetic modification, and fermentation regulation have been developed to increase the astaxanthin production from industrial yeast. Due to the broad substrate spectrum of industrial yeast, many low‐cost resources have also been explored for astaxanthin production. Accordingly, this review will mainly summarize the progress of research into the production of astaxanthin with yeasts, analyze factors affecting astaxanthin synthesis in metabolic pathways, and propose methods and strategies to achieve high yields of astaxanthin from yeasts. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
