Extinctions occur naturally in all environments, but rates have accelerated rapidly during the Anthropocene, especially in fresh water. Despite supporting many fish species of conservation importance, there has never been a formal assessment of their extinction risks in Britain, which has impeded their inclusion in relevant legislation and policy. This study therefore used the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species™ Categories and Criteria to conduct the first systematic assessment of the extinction risks and threats facing the native freshwater and diadromous fishes of Britain. In addition, national assessments were produced for England, Scotland and Wales, reflecting the level at which environmental policy decisions are taken in Britain.Seven species were categorized as being threatened with extinction at the regional level, with European eel Anguilla anguilla and allis shad Alosa alosa classified as Critically Endangered, Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, vendace Coregonus albula and European whitefish Coregonus lavaretus classified as Endangered, and Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus and twaite shad Alosa fallax classified as Vulnerable. In addition, burbot Lota lota was classified as Regionally Extinct, ferox trout Salmo ferox was categorized as Data Deficient, and 25 species were categorized as Least Concern. European sturgeon Acipenser sturio and houting Coregonus oxyrinchus, although probably native, qualified as only vagrants in fresh water, so were categorized as Not Applicable.The assessments provide objective baselines against which future changes can be determined, and a key evidence base to support policy and management decisions for the conservation of freshwater and diadromous fish species and their habitats in Britain. It is recommended that the assessments are repeated every 10 years, which would enable changes in conservation status, the effectiveness of policies and where targeted interventions may be required to be examined using the Red List Index. The Central Appalachian Anomaly (CAA) is a region of the upper mantle beneath eastern North America that exhibits pronounced anomalies in its seismic velocity, seismic attenuation, and electrical conductivity structure. The CAA clearly expresses itself in low velocity, high attenuation, and high conductivity values; however, the present‐day composition and state of the asthenospheric upper mantle in the anomalous region remains imperfectly known. The collection of data from densely spaced, co‐located seismic and magnetotelluric arrays during the Mid‐Atlantic Geophysical Integrative Collaboration (MAGIC) experiment affords the opportunity to probe the structure and properties of the upper mantle in the CAA region in detail using multiple types of geophysical observations. Here, we present new observations of P and S wave travel times from teleseismic earthquakes measured at MAGIC stations, including a determination of how travel times deviate from the predictions of a standard 1‐D reference model. These observations constrain the ratio of the P to S wave travel time perturbations associated with the CAA, which in turn allows us to estimate the ratio of P and S wave velocity anomalies. We combine these observations with previously published estimates of seismic attenuation and electrical conductivity in the upper mantle beneath the MAGIC array, and carry out forward modeling to determine reasonable ranges of temperature, partial melt fraction, water content, and composition for the CAA. Our results suggest that 1%–2% partial melt is required to simultaneously explain the velocity, attenuation, and electrical conductivity observations beneath the MAGIC array. The eastern margin of North America has been shaped by a series of tectonic events including the Paleozoic Appalachian Orogeny and the breakup of Pangea during the Mesozoic. For the past ∼200 Ma, eastern North America has been a passive continental margin; however, there is evidence in the Central Appalachian Mountains for post‐rifting modification of lithospheric structure. This evidence includes two co‐located pulses of magmatism that post‐date the rifting event (at 152 and 47 Ma) along with low seismic velocities, high seismic attenuation, and high electrical conductivity in the upper mantle. Here, we synthesize and evaluate constraints on the lithospheric evolution of the Central Appalachian Mountains. These include tomographic imaging of seismic velocities, seismic and electrical conductivity imaging along the Mid‐Atlantic Geophysical Integrative Collaboration array, gravity and heat flow measurements, geochemical and petrological examination of Jurassic and Eocene magmatic rocks, and estimates of erosion rates from geomorphological data. We discuss and evaluate a set of possible mechanisms for lithospheric loss and intraplate volcanism beneath the region. Taken together, recent observations provide compelling evidence for lithospheric loss beneath the Central Appalachians; while they cannot uniquely identify the processes associated with this loss, they narrow the range of plausible models, with important implications for our understanding of intraplate volcanism and the evolution of continental lithosphere. Our preferred models invoke a combination of (perhaps episodic) lithospheric loss via Rayleigh‐Taylor instabilities and subsequent small‐scale mantle flow in combination with shear‐driven upwelling that maintains the region of thin lithosphere and causes partial melting in the asthenosphere. Plain Language Summary: For the past 200 million years, the east coast of North America has been situated in the middle of a tectonic plate. Contrary to the expectations for this setting, a region of the Central Appalachian Mountains centered near the boundary between the U.S. states of Virginia and West Virginia exhibits atypical properties. The unusual observations include volcanic activity in the geologic past far away from a plate boundary, elevated rates of erosion associated with high topography in the Central Appalachians, and anomalous structure in the upper mantle that has been detected using geophysical methods. This article describes, synthesizes, and compares a suite of observations that show that this part of the Central Appalachians is unusual compared to other so‐called passive continental margins. We discuss a range of different models that might describe how the lithosphere, or the rigid part of the crust and upper mantle that defines the tectonic plate, has evolved through time beneath our study region. We show that the lithosphere today is thin, and that past episodes of lithospheric loss involving a portion of dense lithosphere "dripping" into the mantle under the force of gravity may provide a good explanation for the observations. First reported in the 1960s, offshore freshened groundwater (OFG) has now been documented in most continental margins around the world. In this review we compile a database documenting OFG occurrences and analyze it to establish the general characteristics and controlling factors. We also assess methods used to map and characterize OFG, identify major knowledge gaps, and propose strategies to address them. OFG has a global volume of 1 × 106 km3; it predominantly occurs within 55 km of the coast and down to a water depth of 100 m. OFG is mainly hosted within siliciclastic aquifers on passive margins and recharged by meteoric water during Pleistocene sea level lowstands. Key factors influencing OFG distribution are topography‐driven flow, salinization via haline convection, permeability contrasts, and the continuity/connectivity of permeable and confining strata. Geochemical and stable isotope measurements of pore waters from boreholes have provided insights into OFG emplacement mechanisms, while recent advances in seismic reflection profiling, electromagnetic surveying, and numerical models have improved our understanding of OFG geometry and controls. Key knowledge gaps, such as the extent and function of OFG, and the timing of their emplacement, can be addressed by the application of isotopic age tracers, joint inversion of electromagnetic and seismic reflection data, and development of three‐dimensional hydrological models. We show that such advances, combined with site‐specific modeling, are necessary to assess the potential use of OFG as an unconventional source of water and its role in sub‐seafloor geomicrobiology.Plain Language Summary: This review paper considers offshore freshened groundwater (OFG), which is water hosted in sediments and rocks below the seafloor, with a total dissolved solid concentration lower than seawater. We have compiled >300 records to demonstrate that freshened groundwater occurs offshore on most continents around the world and has a global volume of 1 × 106 km3. The majority of OFG was deposited when sea level was lower than today and is hosted in sandy sub‐seafloor layers that are located within 55 km of coasts in water depths less than 100 m. We present a range of geochemical, geophysical, and modeling approaches that have successfully been used to investigate OFG systems. We report an experimental investigation of the electrical properties of natural polycrystalline lawsonite from Reed Station, CA. Lawsonite represents a particularly efficient water reservoir in subduction contexts, as it can carry about 12 wt % water and is stable over a wide pressure range. Experiments were performed from 300 to about 1325 °C and under pressure from 1 to 10 GPa using a multi‐anvil apparatus. We observe that temperature increases lawsonite conductivity until fluids escape the cell after dehydration occurs. At a fixed temperature of 500 °C, conductivity measurements during compression indicate electrical transitions at about 4.0 and 9.7 GPa that are consistent with crystallographic transitions from orthorhombic C to P and from orthorhombic to monoclinic systems, respectively. Comparison with lawsonite structure studies indicates an insignificant temperature dependence of these crystallographic transitions. We suggest that lawsonite dehydration could contribute to (but not solely explain) high conductivity anomalies observed in the Cascades by releasing aqueous fluid at a depth (~50 km) consistent with the basalt‐eclogite transition. In subduction settings where the incoming plate is older and cooler (e.g., Japan), lawsonite remains stable to great depth. In these cooler settings, lawsonite could represent a vehicle for deep water transport and the subsequent triggering of melt that would appear electrically conductive, though it is difficult to uniquely identify the contributions from lawsonite on field electrical profiles in these more deep‐seated domains. Lithospheric seismic anisotropy illuminates mid‐ocean ridge dynamics and the thermal evolution of oceanic plates. We utilize short‐period (5–7.5 s) ambient‐noise surface waves and 15‐ to 150‐s Rayleigh waves measured across the NoMelt ocean‐bottom array to invert for the complete radial and azimuthal anisotropy in the upper ∼35 km of ∼70‐Ma Pacific lithospheric mantle, and azimuthal anisotropy through the underlying asthenosphere. Strong azimuthal variations in Rayleigh‐ and Love‐wave velocity are observed, including the first clearly measured Love‐wave 2θ and 4θ variations. Inversion of averaged dispersion requires radial anisotropy in the shallow mantle (2‐3%) and the lower crust (4‐5%), with horizontal velocities (VSH) faster than vertical velocities (VSV). Azimuthal anisotropy is strong in the mantle, with 4.5–6% 2θ variation in VSV with fast propagation parallel to the fossil‐spreading direction (FSD), and 2–2.5% 4θ variation in VSH with a fast direction 45° from FSD. The relative behavior of 2θ, 4θ, and radial anisotropy in the mantle are consistent with ophiolite petrofabrics, linking outcrop and surface‐wave length scales. VSV remains fast parallel to FSD to ∼80 km depth where the direction changes, suggesting spreading‐dominated deformation at the ridge. The transition at ∼80 km perhaps marks the dehydration boundary and base of the lithosphere. Azimuthal anisotropy strength increases from the Moho to ∼30 km depth, consistent with flow models of passive upwelling at the ridge. Strong azimuthal anisotropy suggests extremely coherent olivine fabric. Weaker radial anisotropy implies slightly nonhorizontal fabric or the presence of alternative (so‐called E‐type) peridotite fabric. Presence of radial anisotropy in the crust suggests subhorizontal layering and/or shearing during crustal accretion. Long-term evolution (LTE) is a promising last mile access candidate technology for the smart-metering communication architecture. However, when the mobile LTE network is used to support smart meters (SMs), the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of the smart-metering traffic as well as all the other typical mobile network traffic need to be ensured. This becomes problematic when the network users generate diverse traffic types that have different QoS requirements. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a dynamic bandwidth scheduling algorithm to ensure the required QoS of various traffic types arising from both SMs and mobile users. Our proposed dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm integrates two schedulers that are designed for periodic and emergency SM traffic situations that have different SM traffic intensities and QoS requirements. Designing of two schedulers provides the advantages of leveraging the particular traffic characteristics of these two diverse operational situations and achieving the maximum use of resources to ensure QoS requirements. In addition, to alleviate potential problems created by simultaneous emergency SM traffic, we also propose a method that deploys a random delay for SM packet transmissions. We analyse the delay and packet drop ratio of diverse traffic types when both the LTE base station scheduler and the SMs deploy our proposed methods under either periodic or emergency SM traffic conditions in the smart grid. Our results show that our proposed mechanisms are capable of satisfying the QoS requirements of both mobile users and SMs under diverse traffic conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fasciclin-like arabinogalactan protein ( FLA) families have been identified and characterised in key plant species, with some members exhibiting functional specialization. Here we identify the FLA family of Eucalyptus grandis, and investigate the roles of three single- FAS domain FLAs, with particular focus on secondary cell-wall formation and wood properties., We use various in-silico approaches to identify and characterise E. grandis genome FLAs, and perform phylogenetic comparisons with other species. For three key FLAs, we perform functional testing including promoter-reporter and overexpression transgenic approaches using eucalypts, poplar and tobacco., Of the 18 eucalypt FLAs identified, several were specifically and highly expressed in stems. The specificity to stem xylem vessel and fibre development was demonstrated with Eni FLA1promoter: GUS studies in several species. Testing of select eucalypt FLAs resulted in altered wood development and properties, for example 35S: Egr FLA2 led to a 3 degree reduction in cellulose microfibril angle in eucalypt xylem fibres, and 35S: Egr FLA3 to a reduction in tobacco stem flexural strength., These results indicate that the eucalypt FLA family contains diverse members, and particular members with single FAS domains that are functionally specialized for secondary cell wall growth and properties. Changes in water temperature can have important consequences for aquatic ecosystems, with some species being sensitive even to small shifts in temperature during some or all of their life cycle. While many studies report increasing regional and global air temperatures, evidence of changes in river water temperature has, thus far, been site specific and often from sites heavily influenced by human activities that themselves could lead to warming. Here we present a tiered assessment of changing river water temperature covering England and Wales with data from 2773 locations. We use novel statistical approaches to detect trends in irregularly sampled spot measurements taken between 1990 and 2006. During this 17-year period, on average, mean water temperature increased by 0.03 °C per year (±0.002 °C), and positive changes in water temperature were observed at 2385 (86%) sites. Examination of catchments where there has been limited human influence on hydrological response shows that changes in river flow have had little influence on these water temperature trends. In the absence of other systematic influences on water temperature, it is inferred that anthropogenically driven climate change is driving some of this trend in water temperature. © 2014 The Authors. The ancient cell adhesion fasciclin (FAS) domain is found in bacteria, fungi, algae, insects and animals, and occurs in a large family of fasciclin-like arabinogalactan proteins (FLAs) in higher plants. Functional roles for FAS-containing proteins have been determined for insects, algae and vertebrates; however, the biological functions of the various higher-plant FLAs are not clear. Expression of some FLAs has been correlated with the onset of secondary-wall cellulose synthesis in Arabidopsis stems, and also with wood formation in the stems and branches of trees, suggesting a biological role in plant stems. We examined whether FLAs contribute to plant stem biomechanics. Using phylogenetic, transcript abundance and promoter–GUS fusion analyses, we identified a conserved subset of single FAS domain FLAs (group A FLAs) in Eucalyptus and Arabidopsis that have specific and high transcript abundance in stems, particularly in stem cells undergoing secondary-wall deposition, and that the phylogenetic conservation appears to extend to other dicots and monocots. Gene-function analyses revealed that Arabidopsis T-DNA knockout double mutant stems had altered stem biomechanics with reduced tensile strength and a reduced tensile modulus of elasticity, as well as altered cell-wall architecture and composition, with increased cellulose microfibril angle and reduced arabinose, galactose and cellulose content. Using materials engineering concepts, we relate the effects of these FLAs on cell-wall composition with stem biomechanics. Our results suggest that a subset of single FAS domain FLAs contributes to plant stem strength by affecting cellulose deposition, and to the stem modulus of elasticity by affecting the integrity of the cell-wall matrix.
