A rapid method for evaluating suspect testimony is valuable at any stage in an inquiry and can result in a change of direction in an investigation. Rape cases, in particular, can present problems where a defendant renders DNA analysis redundant by claiming that the claimant consented to have sexual relations. Forensic palynology is valuable in confirming or eliminating locations as being crime scenes, thus checking the testimony of both parties. In contrast to some forensic disciplines, forensic palynology can provide critical information without time-consuming full analysis. Two cases are described where the palynological assemblages from comparator samples of pertinent places were compared with those obtained from clothing of claimants and defendants. The results of rapid microscopical scanning of relevant preparations led to early confessions, thus obviating the need for costly analyses and protracted court proceedings. A third case demonstrates the unbiased nature of this technique where a man, although innocent of any offense, lied about having visited the crime scene for fear of prosecution. Anthrosols (cf. plaggen soils) are commonly found across the homefields of Norse farms, yet the extent to which these taphonomically complex and heterogeneous deposits provide reliable archives of environmental change and vegetation history has rarely been investigated. This paper compares the palynological signature contained within an anthrosol located beside Norse farm ruins in the Eastern Settlement of Greenland, with that from a mire situated ∼400 m from the nearest archaeological remains. The investigation covers a period of ∼1000 years leading into, through, and beyond the Greenlandic landnám of AD 985. The results demonstrate that, as anticipated, the anthrosol contains a strong signal for human impact associated with settlement and occupation, although changes in both pollen percentages and accumulation rates (influx) through the profile appear smooth, not erratic, and radiocarbon dates are conformable. Thus the palynological signature contained in the anthrosol is broadly comparable to the patterns characteristic of stratified natural contexts (e.g. mires) with small pollen source areas that are located in close proximity to former Norse structures. Nevertheless, it is also demonstrated that secondary microfossils are a major component of the pollen assemblages within the anthrosol, and pollen influx is notably an order of magnitude higher when compared against the peat core taken from the mire. It is suggested that this may result from the addition of pollen contained in animal dung, augmenting that accumulating through the natural accretion of pollen derived from the surrounding vegetation and landing on the surface of the anthrosol. Although this complicates any palynological interpretation, by adopting a cautious approach we argue that anthrosols can be used to extract useful information about vegetation history at a local scale, as well as providing indirect evidence of landscape impacts and resource use around farmsteads. Aim This paper integrates pollen-analytical data from sites across southern Greenland to revisit the debate regarding which plants may have been introduced during the Norse colonization or landnám c. ad 985. Location Palynological data are drawn from 14 sites (lakes and mires) located within the former Eastern Settlement of Norse Greenland ( c. 60.9° N, 45.5° W). Methods Maps are presented displaying palynological data for three taxa ( Rumex acetosella, Polygonum aviculare and Achillea millefolium), which earlier scholars have argued are 'Old Norse' anthropochores. The maps display pollen frequencies at regular ( c. 100-year) intervals across a period ( ad 800-1500) encompassing Norse settlement. Results Maps for c. ad 800 and 900 (prior to Norse arrival) display the taxa as locally absent, with the appearance and expansion of their pollen at multiple sites from c. ad 1000 ( landnám) providing support for the assumption that each taxon arrived with the first settlers. A general and widespread decline in pollen frequencies for these 'Old Norse' elements on the c. ad 1500 map (following Norse abandonment) demonstrates a close connection between these plants and a cultural landscape that was shaped and maintained predominantly via animal husbandry. Main conclusions Patterns emerging from this exercise may initiate wider debates related to the pattern and character of the Norse colonization of Greenland. It is suggested that differences in the function or role of farm sites could have led to the creation of greater areas of favourable habitat for ' Old Norse' flora in some locations relative to others, and that uneven patterns of colonization and the spread of ' Old Norse' plants might be explained if their introduction - presumably from Iceland - first occurred at only a few locations. Aim To investigate the form and dynamics of ecosystems on an isolated island in the North Atlantic before human settlement in the first millenniumad, and the effects of human activities thereafter. Location The island of Sandoy, Faroes (61°50′ N, 6°45′ W). Methods Two sequences of lake sediments and one of peat were studied using pollen analysis and sedimentological techniques. Age models were constructed on the basis of radiocarbon dating and, in one case, tephrochronology. The data were analysed statistically and compared with existing data from the region. Results The pollen data indicate that early Holocene vegetation consisted of fell-field communities probably growing on raw, skeletal soils. These communities gave way to grass- and sedge-dominated communities, which in turn were largely replaced by dwarf shrub-dominated blanket mire communities well before the first arrival of humans. There is evidence for episodic soil erosion, particularly in the uplands. Changes in the records attributable to human impact are minor in comparison with many other situations in the North Atlantic margins, and with certain published sequences from elsewhere in the Faroes. They include: (1) the appearance of cereal pollen and charcoal, (2) an expansion of ruderal taxa, (3) a decline in certain taxa, notably Juniperus communis and Filipendula ulmaria, and (4) a renewed increase in rates of upland soil erosion. The reliability of palaeoecological inferences drawn from these sites, and more generally from sites in similar unforested situations, is discussed. Main conclusions The subdued amplitude of palynological and sedimentological responses to settlement at these sites can be explained partly in terms of their location and partly in terms of the sensitivity of different parts of the ecosystem to human activities. This study is important in establishing that the imposition of people on the pristine environment of Sandoy, while far from negligible, especially in the immediate vicinity of early farms and at high altitudes, had relatively little ecological impact in many parts of the landscape. Aim The objective of this paper is to explore the relationships that exist between vegetation and modern pollen rain in the open, largely treeless landscape of subarctic Greenland. The implications of these results for the interpretation of fossil pollen assemblages from the time of the Norse landnám are then examined. Location The study area is the sheep farming district of Qassiarsuk in the subarctic, subcontinental vegetational and climatic zone of southern Greenland (61° N, 45° W). Between c.ad 1000–1500 this region was contained within the Norse Eastern Settlement. Methods Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) of harmonized plant–pollen data sets is used to compare plant cover in 64 vegetation quadrats with pollen assemblages obtained from moss polsters at matching locations. Presence/absence data are also used to calculate indices of association, over- and under-representation for pollen types. Results Good correspondence between paired vegetation–pollen samples occurs in many cases, particularly in locations where Salix glauca– Betula glandulosa dwarf shrub heath is dominant, and across herbaceous field boundaries and meadows. Pollen samples are found to be poor at reflecting actual ground cover where ericales or Juniperus communis are the locally dominant shrubs. Dominant or ubiquitous taxa within this landscape ( Betula, Salix and Poaceae) are found to be over-represented in pollen assemblages, as are several of the ‘weeds’ generally accepted as introduced by the Norse settlers. Main conclusions Due to their over-representation in the pollen rain, many of the Norse apophytes and introductions (e.g. Rumex acetosa and R. acetosella) traditionally used to infer human activity in Greenland should be particularly sensitive indicators for landnám, allowing early detection of Norse activity in fossil assemblages. Pteridophyte spores are found to be disassociated with the ground cover of ferns and clubmosses, but are over-represented in pollen assemblages, indicating extra-local or regional sources and long residence times in soil/sediment profiles for these microfossils. A pollen record for Hordeum-type registered in close proximity to a field containing barley suggests that summer temperatures under the current climatic regime are, at least on occasion, sufficient to allow flowering. Early settlement in the North Atlantic produced complex interactions of culture and nature. The sustained program of interdisciplinary collaboration is intended to focus on ninth- to 13th-century sites and landscapes in the highland interior lake basin of Mý'vatn in Iceland and to contribute a long-term perspective to larger issues of sustainable resource use, soil erosion, and the historical ecology of global change. The first stratigraphically continuous pollen profile spanning the Norse and Medieval periods from the archaeologically-rich Mývatnssveit region of northern Iceland is presented. Detailed analyses were made of the tephra, sediment characteristics, pollen and chironomids of a 3 kyr sediment sequence from Helluvaðstjörn, a small, shallow lake. The pollen data show a steady decline in the percentage abundance of tree birch (Betula pubescens) pollen between the Norse settlement (landnám, c. AD 870) and c. AD 1300, a pattern that contrasts with the abrupt fall in birch pollen percentages immediately following the Norse colonization at almost all previously studied sites in Iceland. Some lines of evidence suggest that the gradual birch decline could be a result of reworking of soil pollen, but independent evidence suggests that this may not necessarily be the case. The pollen record indicates that birch woodland was replaced by acidophilic taxa (notably Empetrum nigrum and Sphagnum), again contrasting with the more usual pattern of Poaceae expansion seen in post-landnám pollen diagrams from mires close to farm sites. Chironomid and Pediastrum accumulation data show that the limnic environment became more productive immediately after landnám, probably because of anthropogenic disturbance. An increase in sedimentation rate after landnám appears initially to have been caused by increased lake productivity, while reworked inorganic soil materials became a significant contributor to the sediments after c. AD 1200. The data suggest that the impact of settlement on terrestrial vegetation may have been more variable than previously thought, while freshwater ecosystems experienced significant and rapid change. Abstract Studies of modern pollen rain from remote islands have raised a number of interesting issues concerning the spatial precision of present-day pollen spectra in relation to their parent plant community types. This paper examines the relationships and degree of correlation between a sequence of contemporary vegetation types, environments and their associated surface pollen spectra from a transect across the island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Paired data on both contemporary vegetation and associated surface pollen assemblages have been collected and analysed using methods of numerical classification and ordination. In general terms, the modern pollen rain on South Uist reflects the major changes in vegetation pattern and the major community types fairly closely. The major boundary between the alkaline machair sand dune communities and the various acidic upland vegetation types is particularly clear. However, both variability in the vegetation and the effects of the strong prevailing westerly and south-westerly winds tend to blur the boundaries of the various communities within each of these larger categories. On average 86.6% of the palynomorphs come from in-community quadrat sources, while only 1.3% are from off-island sources. The limited present-day tree distribution on the transect is discussed in the context of the more widespread distribution of arboreal pollen. Overall, there is a strong numerical correspondence between vegetation, pollen and environmental variables. The various problems inherent in examining surface pollen spectra are reviewed. Holocene and partial Lateglacial age percentage and concentration pollen diagrams are presented of two profiles from the Inner Hebridean site of Loch a'Bhogaidh, Islay. The Lateglacial deposits may extend back to Lateglacial Interstadial times and a relative lack of Juniperus communis pollen is noted. The early Holocene deposits contain abundant Betula and Corylus avellana-type pollen, followed by substantial amounts of pollen from other arboreal taxa, namely Pinus sylvestris, Ulmus, Quercus, Alnus glutinosa and Salix. There is pollen, charcoal and sedimentary evidence for possible Mesolithic age environmental impacts, and a hunter-gatherer presence on Islay may date from the 10th millennium BP. Major woodland clearance dates from middle Bronze Age times onwards (c. 3610 BP) and involved a mixed farming regime. The later Holocene records show that soil deterioration was occurring as heath and acid grassland taxa become prominent. These events may have resulted from land use pressures or climate change. Percentage and absolute (concentration and 'influx') pollen diagrams are presented from four locations within a small lake (Black Loch) in eastern Scotland. Two lake marginal cores extend back to lateglacial times but material recovered from the more central cores provides data over only the last c. 3500 years. Two cores are radiocarbon dated (a total of 25 dates) and provide a chronological framework for catchment events. The differences in pollen histories between cores serve to exemplify the dangers of reliance upon single profiles, but the similarities are sufficiently strong to enable useful comparisons to be made and to permit a comprehensive reconstruction of vegetational history for the site. Of particular note is the apparent early arrival of Carylus (c. 8600 BP) and Alnus (c. 7300 BP), the local presence of Pinus and the existence of multiple elm declines. Human impacts upon the vegetational landscape are demonstrable from at least Neolithic times onwards and the presence of Cannabis sativa pollen is strong from c. 955 BP. The Inner Hebridean island of Rhum lies between the once wooded mainland of north-west Scotland and the now largely treeless islands of the Outer Hebrides. Rhum is more exposed than the nearby larger islands and is of particular interest since it has been occupied by humans for at least 8500 years. Pollen, charcoal and radiocarbon studies were carried out on a peat profile from Kinloch in the most sheltered eastern part of the island, some 300 m from the site of the earliest known Mesolithic occupation site in Scotland. From an estimated 7800 BP, the local mire surface was open with some hazel and willow scrub. Alder replaced willow at c. 6500 BP and with hazel, remained the dominant woody vegetation until c. 4000 BP when both were reduced and by which time evidence for agriculture is discernible. A period of reduced Alnus and Corylus between 5950 and 5700 BP, with high concentrations of charcoal, may result from human influence. An Alnus reduction dated to between 5250 and 4950 BP may have been caused by changes in mire hydrology. The woodland was more open than that at nearby mainland sites but it was comparable to well-wooded sites on Skye and Mull. Birch was notably less significant at the Rhum site and the preponderance of Alnus along with persistently high Osmunda values may indicate that adaptation to exposure and salt tolerance were important factors in determining the character of the early postglacial vegetation. Percentage and concentration pollen diagrams from the sediments of two adjacent inter-drumlin hollow lakes near Dungannon, and in two cores from Lough Catherine, suggest that only small reductions in the pollen frequencies of trees such as pine and, at some sites, birch and oak, accompanied reduced Ulmus at the elm decline in these parts of Co. Tyrone. They also confirm that Pteridium aquilinum could sporulate and many herbs were able to flower more freely owing to an opening of the tree canopy. Seventeen radiocarbon dates provide chronologies for the sites and date the elm decline to between 5050 and 5375 B.P., the subsequent start of increased elm pollen percentages to between 5010 and 4850 B.P., and the beginning of a second decline in elm pollen to between 4330 and 4260 B.P. The initial decline in elm pollen values may have been caused by disease and this reduction was superimposed upon a background of small-scale clearances which continued after a general elm regeneration. The question of a general similarity and causation of the second elm decline in Ireland and elsewhere is considered. Chemical, magnetic and pollen preservation data from the Co.
