Background and Purpose Methods Results Conclusions The diagnostic criteria for myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody (MOG‐IgG)‐associated disease (MOGAD) were published in 2023. We aimed to determine the performance of the new criteria in Latin American (LATAM) patients compared with the 2018 criteria and explore the significance of MOG–IgG titers in diagnosis.We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of LATAM (Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia) adult patients with one clinical MOGAD event and MOG‐IgG positivity confirmed by cell‐based assay. Both 2018 and 2023 MOGAD criteria were applied, calculating diagnostic performance indicators.Among 171 patients (predominantly females, mean age at first attack = 34.1 years, mean disease duration = 4.5 years), 98.2% patients met the 2018 criteria, and of those who did not fulfill diagnostic criteria (n = 3), all tested positive for MOG‐IgG (one low‐positive and two without reported titer). Additionally, 144 (84.2%) patients met the 2023 criteria, of whom 57 (39.5%) had MOG‐IgG+ titer information (19 clearly positive and 38 low‐positive), whereas 87 (60.5%) patients had no MOG‐IgG titer. All 144 patients met diagnostic supporting criteria. The remaining 27 patients did not meet the 2023 MOGAD criteria due to low MOG‐IgG (n = 12) or lack of titer antibody access (n = 15), associated with the absence of supporting criteria. The 2023 MOGAD criteria showed a sensitivity of 86% (95% confidence interval = 0.80–0.91) and specificity of 100% compared to the 2018 criteria.These findings support the diagnostic utility of the 2023 MOGAD criteria in an LATAM cohort in real‐world practice, despite limited access to MOG‐IgG titration. Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, which promotes a sustained inflammatory environment in the central nervous system. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play an important role in the control of inflammation and might play a neuroprotective role. Indeed, a decrease in Treg number and function has been reported in PD. In this context, pramipexole, a dopaminergic receptor agonist used to treat PD symptoms, has been shown to increase peripheral levels of Treg cells and improve their suppressive function. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of pramipexole on immunoregulatory Treg cells and its possible neuroprotective effect on human dopaminergic neurons differentiated from human embryonic stem cells. Methods: Treg cells were sorted from white blood cells of healthy human donors. Assays were performed with CD3/CD28‐activated and non‐activated Treg cells treated with pramipexole at concentrations of 2 or 200 ng/mL. These regulatory cells were co‐cultured with in vitro‐differentiated human dopaminergic neurons in a cytotoxicity assay with 6‐hydroxydopamine (6‐OHDA). The role of interleukin‐10 (IL‐10) was investigated by co‐culturing activated IL‐10‐producing Treg cells with neurons. To further investigate the effect of treatment on Tregs, gene expression in pramipexole‐treated, CD3/CD28‐activated Treg cells was determined by Fluidigm analysis. Results: Pramipexole‐treated CD3/CD28‐activated Treg cells showed significant protective effects on dopaminergic neurons when challenged with 6‐OHDA. Pramipexole‐treated activated Treg cells showed neuroprotective capacity through mechanisms involving IL‐10 release and the activation of genes associated with regulation and neuroprotection. Conclusion: Anti‐CD3/CD28‐activated Treg cells protect dopaminergic neurons against 6‐OHDA‐induced damage. In addition, activated, IL‐10‐producing, pramipexole‐treated Tregs also induced a neuroprotective effect, and the supernatants of these co‐cultures promoted axonal growth. Pramipexole‐treated, activated Tregs altered their gene expression in a concentration‐dependent manner, and enhanced TGFβ‐related dopamine receptor regulation and immune‐related pathways. Nano‐ and angstrom‐scale channels fabricated from 2D‐layered materials provide a unique platform for studying fluidic behavior at atomic‐scale confinement, with applications in desalination, osmotic power generation, and fuel cells. While various fabrication methods exist, achieving precision, scalability, and minimal fabrication time is challenging. Ultramicrotomy‐based nanofabrication is shown here as an efficient approach to create nanofluidic membranes containing nanochannels with atomically flat walls. This approach is compatible with both bottom–up nanolaminates and top–down nanochannels, produces multiple devices from the same 2D assembly and allows swift variation of channel length. Integration of these membranes into macroscopic silicon fluidic‐chips is achieved maintaining the structural and functional properties. The robustness of the sliced membranes is demonstrated through restacked vermiculate laminates that sustain applied pressures and generate ionic streaming currents. Sliced pristine vermiculite channels exhibit charge‐selective ion transport, leading to osmotic power density (Posm/A) ranging from 9.2 to 300.4 Wm−2 under various KCl concentration gradients. Maximum conversion efficiency of 23.3% is obtained at a 100‐fold gradient, yielding Posm/A of 234.6 Wm−2. Short channel lengths sliced by ultramicrotomy contribute to high Posm/A, promising applications of miniature energy devices for pressure‐driven electricity generation and osmotic power generation. This report presents a new application for yttrium oxide (YOX) in the modification of carbon paste electrodes with excellent electroactivity for the independent detection of dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA). The surface of the YOX‐modified electrode was characterized with SEM and EDS. The electroactive properties of DP and AA were studied with cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV) and amperometry (Am). The activity of DA and AA increased by more than 100 % when YOX/CPE was used, which allowed us to obtain detection limits of 0.04 and 0.06 μmol/L for DA and AA, respectively. The usefulness of YOX/CPE was tested with real human urine, fresh orange juice and vitamin C tablets, and the results were acceptable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary Advances in antibody technologies have resulted in the development of potent antibody‐based therapeutics with proven clinical efficacy against infectious diseases. Several monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), mainly against viruses such as SARS‐CoV‐2, HIV‐1, Ebola virus, influenza virus, and hepatitis B virus, are currently undergoing clinical testing or are already in use. Although these mAbs exhibit potent neutralizing activity that effectively blocks host cell infection, their antiviral activity results not only from Fab‐mediated virus neutralization, but also from the protective effector functions mediated through the interaction of their Fc domains with Fcγ receptors (FcγRs) on effector leukocytes. Fc‐FcγR interactions confer pleiotropic protective activities, including the clearance of opsonized virions and infected cells, as well as the induction of antiviral T‐cell responses. However, excessive or inappropriate activation of specific FcγR pathways can lead to disease enhancement and exacerbated pathology, as seen in the context of dengue virus infections. A comprehensive understanding of the diversity of Fc effector functions during infection has guided the development of engineered antiviral antibodies optimized for maximal effector activity, as well as the design of targeted therapeutic approaches to prevent antibody‐dependent enhancement of disease. A diagnosis of brain metastasis (BM) significantly affects quality of life in patients with metastatic renal cell cancer (mRCC). Although systemic treatments have shown efficacy in mRCC, active surveillance (AS) is still commonly used in clinical practice. In this single‐center cohort study, we assessed the impact of different initial treatment strategies for metastatic RCC (mRCC) on the development of BM. All consecutive patients diagnosed with mRCC between 2011 and 2022 were included at the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute, the Netherlands, and a subgroup of patients with BM was selected. In total, 381 patients with mRCC (ECM, BM, or both) were identified. Forty‐six patients had BM of whom 39 had metachronous BM (diagnosed ≥1 month after ECM). Twenty‐five (64.1%) of these 39 patients with metachronous BM had received prior systemic treatment for ECM and 14 (35.9%) patients were treatment naive at BM diagnosis. The median BM‐free survival since ECM diagnosis was significantly longer (p =.02) in previously treated patients (29.0 [IQR 12.6–57.0] months) compared to treatment naive patients (6.8 [IQR 1.0–7.0] months). In conclusion, patients with mRCC who received systemic treatment for ECM prior to BM diagnosis had a longer BM‐free survival as compared to treatment naïve patients. Background: The quantitative interpretation of the radiometric information extracted from infrared (IR) images in individuals with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is an open problem yet to be solved. This is of particular value given that DM2 is a worldwide health problem and onset for evolution toward diabetic foot disease (DFD). Since DM2 causes changes at the vascular and neurological levels, the metabolic heat distribution on the outer skin is modified as a consequence of such alterations. Of particular interest in this contribution are those alterations displayed over the skin's heat patterns at the lower limbs. At the core of such alterations is the deterioration of the vascular and neurological networks responsible for procuring systemic thermoregulation. It is within this context that IR imaging is introduced as a likely aiding tool to assist with the clinical diagnosis of DM2 at stages early enough to prevent the evolution of the DFD. Methods: IR images of lower limbs are acquired from a cohort of individuals clinically diagnosed with and without DM2. Additional inclusion criteria for patients are to be free from any visible wound or tissue‐related trauma (e.g., injuries, edema, and so forth), and also free from non‐metabolic comorbidities. All images and data are equally processed and analyzed using indices that evaluate the spatial and temporal evolution of temperature distribution in lower limbs. We studied the temporal response of individuals' legs after inducing an external stimulus. For this purpose, we combine the information of the asymmetry and thermal response index (ATR) and the thermal response index (TRI), computed using images at different times, improving the results previously obtained individually with ATR and TRI. Results: A novel representation of the information extracted from IR images of the lower limbs in individuals with and without DM2 is presented. This representation was built using the ATR and TRI indices for the anterior and posterior views (PVs), individually and combining the information from both views. In all cases, the information of each index and each view presents linearity properties that allow said information to be interpreted quantitatively in a well‐defined and limited space. This representation, built in a polar coordinate space, allows obtaining sensitivity values of 86%, 97%, and 97%, and specificity values of 83%, 72%, and 78% for the anterior view (AV), the PV, and the combined views, respectively. Additionally, it was observed that the angular variable that defines this new representation space allows to significantly (p < 0.01) differentiate the groups, while correlating with clinical variables of interest, such as glucose and glycated hemoglobin. Conclusion: The linearity properties that exist between the ATR and TRI indices allow a quantitative interpretation of the information extracted from IR images of the lower extremities of individuals with and without DM2, and allow the construction of a representation space that eliminates possible ambiguities in the interpretation, while simplifying it, making it accessible for clinical use. While ulceration is one of the most common infantile hemangioma (IH) complications, severe bleeding is a rare consequence, with a paucity of patients reported. We report a 5‐month‐old girl with a very large, mixed, partial segmental IH of the upper chest wall who, despite medical intervention, developed severe ulceration and multiple episodes of life‐threatening bleeding that ultimately led to hemorrhagic shock. Experience in our patient and a review of six previous reports shows that severe bleeding is a risk when ulceration extends directly into an arterial feeding vessel that is often visible clinically. Other potential predictors for severe bleeding include large to very large IH size with extension of the tumor into underlying structures, segmental or partial segmental patterning, mixed and bulky morphology, and white discoloration as a sign of impending or worsening ulceration. This article aims to review the various techniques used to produce diesel from lignocellulosic biomass. Data were collected using the Web of Science database to identify trends, barriers, and prospects associated with the alternative methods used. The analysis reviewed 359 papers published between 2006 and 2021, focusing on three key areas: biomass pretreatment, biomass conversion, and biorefining. Pretreatment technologies require extensive research to reduce excessive energy and reagent consumption, thereby reducing overall costs. Fast pyrolysis and lipid‐producing microorganisms have been shown to be the most promising conversion routes due to their versatility in utilizing different lignocellulosic residues and producing a wide range of marketable co‐products. The most widely used method used for refining is hydroprocessing coupled with catalysts, with the objective of improving bio‐oil quality. Two of the main challenges are the excessive cost of the overall process and the limitations imposed by the technology. These limitations require processing optimization to achieve sustainable production and valuable co‐products. The growth of lignocellulosic diesel production will depend on the integration with other biodiesel and biofuel production processes by the optimization of new processes and the generation of new bioproducts to increase efficiency and reduce costs for commercial viability. Surface thermal inertia derived from satellite imagery offers a valuable tool for remotely mapping the physical structure and water content of planetary regolith. Efforts to quantify thermal inertia using surface temperatures on Earth, however, have consistently yielded large uncertainties and suffered from a lack of reproducibility. Unlike dry or airless bodies, Earth's abundant water and dense atmosphere lead to dynamic thermophysical conditions that are a greater challenge to model than on a world like Mars. In this work, an approach was developed using field experiments to inform and fine‐tune a thermophysical model of terrestrial sediment and calculate an inherent thermal inertia value with higher precision and less initial knowledge of the sediment than has previously been achieved remotely on Earth. A thermal inertia derived for a basaltic tephra site in Northern Arizona was replicated within 1% between different field seasons, demonstrating reproducibility. Model‐derived values were validated in situ by two different thermophysical field probes to within 8% of the measured mean values. Analog studies such as this hold the promise of improved interpretations of surface materials on Mars, and an accurate thermal model for Earth is the key step to enabling translation between the two worlds. Sustainable human resource management is gaining importance in organizations due to its role in developing a sustainable work environment and well‐being. This paper discusses the relationship between employee perceptions of sustainable human resource management and job satisfaction in 54 countries. We propose that sustainable HRM is positively associated with job satisfaction but that this relationship is moderated by employees' identification with the organization and country‐level individualism–collectivism. Thus, we suggest national culture functions as a second‐level moderator of the relationship of sustainable HRM with organizational identification on job satisfaction. Findings from the multi‐level analyses using data from 14,502 employees nested within 54 countries provided support for our hypotheses, namely that employee perceptions of sustainable HRM were positively associated with job satisfaction and that this relationship was more pronounced for employees with lower levels compared to higher levels of organizational identification in individualistic rather than collectivistic countries. Lopezia racemosa is known as a "mosquito flower or perlilla." It is commonly found in corn crops. In traditional Mexican medicine, this plant is used to treat stomach cancer and urinary tract infections. Likewise, compounds and extracts isolated from plants have shown cytotoxic and anti‐inflammatory effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the photochemoprotective effect of topical treatment with the methanolic extract of L. racemosa (MELR) as a photochemoprotective agent against the harmful effects of UV irradiation (UVR) on a bacterial model and hairless mice. The MELR components were separated and analyzed via HPLC‐UV‐ESI‐MS. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by the ability of MERL to scavenge DPPH and ABTS free radicals and by its FRAP capacity. The toxicity of MELR was evaluated in keratinocyte cultures. The photoprotective capacity of MELR was assessed through challenge experiments using models with bacteria and hairless CD1 et/et mice; cytokines related to the damage caused by UVR were also measured. In the methanolic extract of L. racemosa, five metabolites were detected and identified: two isomers of quercetin 6‐C glycoside, orientin, quercetin 3‐(6″‐acetylglycoside) and quercetin 3‐(6″‐galloylglycoside) 7‐(2,3‐dihydroxytetrahydro‐2H‐pyran‐4‐yl acetate). MELR exhibited DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging properties, in addition to Fe ion reducing activity. MELR showed a photoprotective effect against UVB radiation‐induced death in Escherichia coli bacteria. At the histological level, topical treatment of CD‐1 et/et mice with MERL reduced the damage caused by UVR. Quantification of interleukins in the blood of mice revealed that the expression of IL‐12 was greater in the control group treated with ultraviolet radiation than in the group protected with MELR. Background: To evaluate the outcomes of first‐line imatinib versus nilotinib treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia in the chronic phase (CML‐CP) in real‐world clinical practice. Methods: A propensity score analysis was performed to eliminate imbalances between the treatment groups. In the analysis, 163 patients in the nilotinib group and 163 patients in the matched imatinib group were retrospectively evaluated. Results: Nilotinib‐treated patients achieved complete cytogenetic response (CCyR) and major molecular response more rapidly than imatinib‐treated patients. However, there was no significant difference in 5‐year overall survival (OS) or progression‐free survival (PFS) between the two groups (OS: 94.3% vs. 90.5%, p = 0.602; PFS: 92.9% vs. 88.0%, p = 0.614). Nilotinib‐treated patients had a higher failure‐free survival (FFS) and event‐free survival (EFS) than imatinib‐treated patients (FFS: 71.7% vs. 54.3%, p = 0.040; EFS: 71.7% vs. 53.5%, p = 0.025). Conclusions: This retrospective analysis from clinical practice did not confirm any benefit of frontline nilotinib treatment for OS and PFS; however, it did demonstrate higher FFS and EFS in the nilotinib cohort. The quality of alpaca textile fibre has great potential, especially if objectionable fibres (coarse and medullated fibres) that cause itching are reduced, considering that objectionable fibres can be identified by diameter and medullation types. The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for medullar types and their respective diameters to evaluate the possibility of incorporating them as selection criteria in alpaca breeding programmes. The research used 3149 alpaca fibre samples collected from 2020 to 2022, from a population of 1626 Huacaya type alpacas. The heritability and correlations of the percentages of non‐medullated (NM), fragmented medulle (FM), uncontinuous medullated (UM), continuous medullated (CM), and strongly medullated (SM) fibres were analysed, also the fibre diameter (FD) for each of the medullation types. The heritability estimated for medullation types were 0.25 ± 0.01, 0.18 ± 0.01, 0.10 ± 0.01, 0.20 ± 0.01 and 0.11 ± 0.01 for NM, FM, UM, CM and SM, respectively. The genetic correlations for medullation categories ranged from 0.15 ± 0.03 to 0.66 ± 0.02 (in absolute values). The heritabilility estimated for fibre diameter (FD) of each of the medullation types were 0.29 ± 0.03, 0.27 ± 0.02, 0.35 ± 0.02, 0.30 ± 0.02, 0.25 ± 0.02 and 0.10 ± 0.02 for FD, FD_NM, FD_FM, FD_UM, FD_CM and FD_SM, respectively. The genetic correlations for fibre diameter of the medullation types ranged from 0.04 ± 0.04 to 0.97 ± 0.01. FD, NM and FM are the main traits to be used as selection criteria under a genetic index, since they would reduce fibre diameter, and also increase NM and FM, and, in addition reducing indirectly CM, SM, and SM_FD. Witnessing emotional expressions in others triggers physiological arousal in humans. The current study focused on pupil responses to emotional expressions in a community sample as a physiological index of arousal and attention. We explored the associations between parents' and offspring's responses to dynamic facial expressions of emotion, as well as the links between pupil responses and anxiety/depression. Children (N = 90, MAge = 10.13, range = 7.21–12.94, 47 girls) participated in this lab study with one of their parents (47 mothers). Pupil responses were assessed in a computer task with dynamic happy, angry, fearful, and sad expressions, while participants verbally labeled the emotion displayed on the screen as quickly as possible. Parents and children reported anxiety and depression symptoms in questionnaires. Both parents and children showed stronger pupillary responses to negative versus positive expressions, and children's responses were overall stronger than those of parents. We also found links between the pupil responses of parents and children to negative, especially to angry faces. Child pupil responses were related to their own and their parents' anxiety levels and to their parents' (but not their own) depression. We conclude that child pupils are sensitive to individual differences in parents' pupils and emotional dispositions in community samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Parental verbal threat (vs. safety) information about strangers may induce fears of these strangers in adolescents. In this multi‐method experimental study, utilizing a within‐subject design, parents provided standardized verbal threat or safety information to their offspring (N = 77, Mage = 11.62 years, 42 girls) regarding two strangers in the lab. We also explored whether the impact of parental verbal threat information differs depending on the social anxiety levels of parents or fearful temperaments of adolescents. Adolescent's fear of strangers during social interaction tasks was assessed using cognitive (fear beliefs, attention bias), behavioral (observed avoidance and anxiety), and physiological (heart rate) indices. We also explored whether the impact of parental verbal threat information differs depending on the social anxiety levels of parents or fearful temperaments of adolescents. The findings suggest that a single exposure to parental verbal threat (vs. safety) information increased adolescent's self‐reported fears about the strangers but did not increase their fearful behaviors, heart rate, or attentional bias. Furthermore, adolescents of parents with higher social anxiety levels or adolescents with fearful temperaments were not more strongly impacted by parental verbal threat information. Longitudinal research and studies investigating parents' naturalistic verbal expressions of threat are needed to expand our understanding of this potential verbal fear‐learning pathway. Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising technology for decarbonization through the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. In many DAC processes, the regeneration energy used to restore the capture capacity of sorbents accounts for a significant fraction of the energy required by the whole process. Here we report an effective and scalable sorbent regeneration method for liquid DAC solvents based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) heating with AC magnetic fields. MNPs can be directly heated to provide uniform and rapid volumetric heating, as we demonstrate by promoting the release of captured CO2 from an aqueous solution of potassium sarcosinate. Our results showed that 90% of the solvent can be regenerated within 7.5 min of heating through proposed technique. The MNPs and solvent are found to be stable during the regeneration process and the MNPs showed long‐term stability in the CO2‐saturated solvent. Cyclic experiments showed that the nanoparticles can be reused for multiple cycles without performance deterioration. The process is operated in a noncontact mode through electromagnetic waves, making it an adoptable approach for existing carbon capture systems. This research aimed to use two projective methods and the Big Five Personality Traits (BFPT) model to study food consumer behavior in the case of traditional Mexican cheeses. Based on an online survey (n = 197), this study employs the Word Association and Mason‐Haire's Shopping List projective techniques with two shopping lists (traditional vs. supermarket). Several factors influencing consumers' perceptions of traditional cheeses were identified, such as hedonism, sensory characteristics, quality and freshness. The shopping list allowed the identification of factors related to food consumption and consumer personality traits. Conscientiousness and Neuroticism were associated with the profile of the consumer who purchases food in supermarkets. In contrast, the personalities of Agreeableness and Openness were associated with the profile of the consumer of traditional Mexican cheeses. The results of this research could be helpful in promoting and marketing traditional foods, considering consumers' personality traits. Practical applications: This research identified consumer perceptions of traditional cheeses produced in the central region of Mexico and the personality traits associated with the consumer profile of these food products. The results can be of great use to the cheese‐producing agroindustry, considering that consumers are aware that by purchasing these products, they are contributing to the development and support of the local economy. Therefore, it is essential for producers and sellers to consider the attributes that consumers associate with traditional cheeses, such as artisanal and local characteristics, hedonic value, and consumers' personality traits. Natural or synthetic polycations are used in nucleic acid‐based therapies as complexing agents which interact electrostatically with nucleic acids, condense them into nanoparticles, protect them and control their entry into cells. However, although the literature on the formation of nanoparticles known as complexes is well documented, fewer studies have focused on the physical chemistry behind their disassembly, especially under physicochemical conditions found in an intracellular environment. There are several theories of the disassembly of these complexes, one of them consisting in the exchange between the polycations of these particles with biological polyanions. This project is focused on the study of the complexation mechanism of chitosan and calf‐thymus DNA, as well as the stability of the obtained complexes in presence of biological polyanions, i.e., glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). In the presence of polyelectrolyte complexes, GAGs that are present in cells are expected to compete with nucleic acids and dissociate the complex if polycation–GAG association is thermodynamically favored. It is found that chitosan/DNA complexes colloidal stability depends on its [N+]/[P−] charge ratio (R). Furthermore, it is determined that the aggregation onset of the complexes, generated by the addition of different GAGs, depends on the structure and the charge density of the GAGs. In industrial ecology, approaches have been developed to analyze the contribution of specific sectors to environmental impacts within supply chains. In economics, a range of methods addresses the forward linkage (use of output) and backward linkage (dependency on inputs) of sectors, and the analysis of key sectors. This article offers a formal investigation of the relationship between these. It shows that both the analysis of supply chain impacts and of intersectoral linkages can be seen as special cases of a more general hypothetical extraction method (HEM). In HEM, sectors' role is assessed as the effect of their removal on the input–output model's solution. HEM also allows for the (partial) extraction of individual transactions. HEM thus offers a flexible approach to assessing the contribution of one or several sectors, or transactions, or parts thereof, to value added or footprint of any final demand. It can be applied to study the environmental footprints of companies or intermediate products, the contribution of certain inputs to sectors, or the potential impact of disruptions of supply chains on producers and consumers. Senescence is an irreversible arrest of the cell cycle that can be characterized by markers of senescence such as p16, p21, and KI‐67. The characterization of different senescence‐associated phenotypes requires selection of the most relevant senescence markers to define reliable cytometric methodologies. Mass cytometry (a.k.a. Cytometry by time of flight, CyTOF) can monitor up to 40 different cell markers at the single‐cell level and has the potential to integrate multiple senescence and other phenotypic markers to identify senescent cells within a complex tissue such as skeletal muscle, with greater accuracy and scalability than traditional bulk measurements and flow cytometry‐based measurements. This article introduces an analysis framework for detecting putative senescent cells based on clustering, outlier detection, and Boolean logic for outliers. Results show that the pipeline can identify putative senescent cells in skeletal muscle with well‐established markers such as p21 and potential markers such as GAPDH. It was also found that heterogeneity of putative senescent cells in skeletal muscle can partly be explained by their cell type. Additionally, autophagy‐related proteins ATG4A, LRRK2, and GLB1 were identified as important proteins in predicting the putative senescent population, providing insights into the association between autophagy and senescence. It was observed that sex did not affect the proportion of putative senescent cells among total cells. However, age did have an effect, with a higher proportion observed in fibro/adipogenic progenitors (FAPs), satellite cells, M1 and M2 macrophages from old mice. Moreover, putative senescent cells from muscle of old and young mice show different expression levels of senescence‐related proteins, with putative senescent cells of old mice having higher levels of p21 and GAPDH, whereas putative senescent cells of young mice had higher levels of IL‐6. Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Batteries are a family of promising energy storage systems. However, they face various challenges related to their lifetime, such as the Faradaic imbalance due to the occurrence of parasitic reaction leading to the fading of its energy storage capacity. Herein, automatization of a rebalancing system to reverse the detrimental effects of Faradaic imbalance due to the unavoidable presence of small quantities of oxygen in the negative reservoir or hydrogen evolution reaction is developed and implemented in an alkaline flow battery. A membrane‐free rebalancing cell is proposed to promote the oxygen evolution reaction and reverse the accumulated charge in the catholyte showing a 100 % coulombic efficiency. The programmable logic controller monitors the open circuit voltage to calculate the charge stored in each charge/discharge step and closes a circuit so a fixed voltage is applied to the rebalancing cell when the battery needs to be rebalanced. The system is tested using an alkaline flow battery consisting of ferrocyanide and 2,6‐dihydroxyanthraquinone, improving the energy capacity retention from 0.27 % cycle‐1 and 0.47 % h‐1 without rebalancing system to 100 % retention after >850 cycles and >24 days (without Ar‐filled glovebox), demonstrating the feasibility of this proposed system to address the Faradaic imbalance. Introduction: Biomarkers that help to evaluate the immune system and could be useful in multiple sclerosis (MS) are the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune‐inflammatory index (SII). The objective of this work is to evaluate the significance of the SII index, PLR, and NLR before and after transplantation in individuals with MS who underwent autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (aHSCT) at a single institution. Methods: Patients with MS who received an aHSCT between 2017 and 2022 were included in the study. NLR, PLR, and SII index were calculated prior to the transplant and 100 days after, and evaluation of the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) was done before the transplant and 12 months after. The cohort was divided into two groups: aHSCT responders (R) and nonresponders (NR). Results: Fifty‐eight individuals were examined: 37 patients in the responders group R group and 21 in NR group. There was no statistically significant difference in the SII, NLR, and PLR prior to the transplant, however at 100 days post‐HSCT, NLR in the R group was 1.8 versus 3.1 in the NR group (p = 0.003), PLR was 194 versus 295, respectively (p = 0.024), meanwhile SII index was 489.5 versus 729.3 (p < 0.001). Conclusion: High NLR and SII index values after the aHSCT were associated with a worsening in the EDSS score. However, since this is the first ever study that compared NLR and SII index with the aHSCT response in persons with MS, further studies must be performed to corroborate this information. Summary: Soybeans (Glycine max) are a preferred source of plant‐based proteins and oil in various applications in foods and feeds. When soybean is converted to soybean meal (SBM), the quality is determined by the protein content and its digestibility. Protein digestibility is reduced by anti‐nutritional factors like trypsin inhibitors (TI) and processing. The abundant genetic variations in soybean germplasm affect the quantitative trait of protein content. This study analysed the effect of location and planting dates on genetically identical soybeans grown in North Carolina (NC) and then compared the nutritional traits to similar commonly grown soybean varieties in other locations in the USA. The soybeans were analysed using NIRS and wet chemistry. It was found that soybean protein content ranged from 38.14% to 44.92% among the different varieties grown in three different locations in NC. Similarly, TI levels ranged between 28.22 and 33.11 mg g−1 among these varieties. The same varieties, when planted as either a full season or double crop, had different TI levels and were also impacted by planting location. However, there were no significant differences in the TI levels between the varieties and planting seasons. Furthermore, no significant difference in protein content among the varieties within the planting dates was found. Compared to soybeans grown in other parts of the USA, the average crude protein (CP) content was similar to those grown in Arkansas and Minnesota. The study of the dynamics of nucleic acids in solution, their flow properties, and viscoelasticity is of great importance for understanding their biological functions. Many important properties of nucleic acids, such as DNA, depend on polymer concentration, CDNA, molecular weight (MW), rigidity, and external salt content, the latter parameter affecting electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, DNA molecular chains can organize, in vitro, into liquid crystalline phases at high CDNA. In this work, three DNA samples with different MW were studied in solution in a broad concentration range (CDNA from 0.025 to 200 mg mL−1, depending on DNA MW). Firstly, the intrinsic viscosities and MW for all DNA samples were determined through capillary and rheological measurements. Then, the overlap concentrations, C*, were estimated from the relation C* ≈ [η]−1. DNA chain characteristics were then analyzed in terms of the influence of DNA MW on the solution viscosities and on the overlap parameter, CDNA[η]. Flow birefringence appearance was identified by screening a wide CDNA range through visual observations with crossed polarizers. Finally, crossed‐light polarized microscopy was used to identify the appearance of liquid crystals at rest, confirming that higher CDNA are needed to obtain liquid crystals for low MW DNA samples. Nanogels are nanostructures with dimensions within the nanoscale, composed of crosslinked polymers through their functional groups. Nanogels can display sensitiveness to stimuli, such as pH or temperature. This characteristic has been used in the design of new platforms for the transport and release of active ingredients. Biopolymer‐based nanogels are of great interest due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, nontoxicity, and among others. In this project, pH‐responsive nanogels are synthesized through a novel methodology, using two polysaccharides classified as safe, biocompatible, and easily accessible materials, i.e., chitosan (CS) and maltodextrin (MD). A reductive amination reaction between CS and partially oxidized MDs allows to synthesized MD/CS nanogels with sizes ranging from 90 ± 5 to 194 ± 40 nm and with a colloidal stability up to 7 weeks. It is found that the variation of nanogels size and charge depends on CS concentration, molecular weight, and pH, as well as on the % oxidation of the MD. As evidence of nanogels pH‐responsiveness, an increase of size and ζ‐potential is observed by decreasing the pH. This size increase is attributed to the swelling of the nanogels upon a change in pH. Here, we performed single‐cell RNA sequencing of S1 and receptor binding domain protein‐specific B cells from convalescent COVID‐19 patients with different clinical manifestations. This study aimed to evaluate the role and developmental pathway of atypical memory B cells (MBCs) in response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) infection. The results revealed a proinflammatory signature across B cell subsets associated with disease severity, as evidenced by the upregulation of genes such as GADD45B, MAP3K8, and NFKBIA in critical and severe individuals. Furthermore, the analysis of atypical MBCs suggested a developmental pathway similar to that of conventional MBCs through germinal centers, as indicated by the expression of several genes involved in germinal center processes, including CXCR4, CXCR5, BCL2, and MYC. Additionally, the upregulation of genes characteristic of the immune response in COVID‐19, such as ZFP36 and DUSP1, suggested that the differentiation and activation of atypical MBCs may be influenced by exposure to SARS‐CoV‐2 and that these genes may contribute to the immune response for COVID‐19 recovery. From eukaryotes to prokaryotes, all cells secrete extracellular vesicles (EVs) as part of their regular homeostasis, intercellular communication, and cargo disposal. Accumulating evidence suggests that small EVs carry functional small RNAs, potentially serving as extracellular messengers and liquid‐biopsy markers. Yet, the complete transcriptomic landscape of EV‐associated small RNAs during disease progression is poorly delineated due to critical limitations including the protocols used for sequencing, suboptimal alignment of short reads (20–50 nt), and uncharacterized genome annotations—often denoted as the 'dark matter' of the genome. In this study, we investigate the EV‐associated small unannotated RNAs that arise from endogenous genes and are part of the genomic 'dark matter', which may play a key emerging role in regulating gene expression and translational mechanisms. To address this, we created a distinct small RNAseq dataset from human prostate cancer & benign tissues, and EVs derived from blood (pre‐ & post‐prostatectomy), urine, and human prostate carcinoma epithelial cell line. We then developed an unsupervised data‐based bioinformatic pipeline that recognizes biologically relevant transcriptional signals irrespective of their genomic annotation. Using this approach, we discovered distinct EV‐RNA expression patterns emerging from the un‐annotated genomic regions (UGRs) of the transcriptomes associated with tissue‐specific phenotypes. We have named these novel EV‐associated small RNAs as 'EV‐UGRsʼ or "EV‐dark matter". Here, we demonstrate that EV‐UGR gene expressions are downregulated by ∼100 fold (FDR < 0.05) in the circulating serum EVs from aggressive prostate cancer subjects. Remarkably, these EV‐UGRs expression signatures were regained (upregulated) after radical prostatectomy in the same follow‐up patients. Finally, we developed a stem‐loop RT‐qPCR assay that validated prostate cancer‐specific EV‐UGRs for selective fluid‐based diagnostics. Overall, using an unsupervised data driven approach, we investigate the 'dark matter' of EV‐transcriptome and demonstrate that EV‐UGRs carry tissue‐specific Information that significantly alters pre‐ and post‐prostatectomy in the prostate cancer patients. Although further validation in randomized clinical trials is required, this new class of EV‐RNAs hold promise in liquid‐biopsy by avoiding highly invasive biopsy procedures in prostate cancer. Introduction: Transgender women are at increased risk of acquiring HIV. Earlier studies reported lower retention in HIV care, antiretroviral therapy uptake, adherence and viral suppression. We assessed the stages of the HIV care continuum of transgender women in the Netherlands over an 11‐year period. In addition, we assessed new HIV diagnoses and late presentation, as well as disengagement from care, between 2011 and 2021. Methods: Using data from the Dutch national ATHENA cohort, we separately assessed viral suppression, as well as time to achieving viral suppression, among transgender women for each year between 2011 and 2021. We also assessed trends in new HIV diagnoses and late presentation (CD4 count of <350 cells/µl and/or AIDS at diagnosis), and disengagement from care. Results: Between 2011 and 2021, a total of 260 transgender women attended at least one HIV clinical visit. Across all years, <90% of transgender women were virally suppressed (207/239 [87%] in 2021). The number of new HIV diagnoses fluctuated for transgender women (ptrend = 0.053) and late presentation was common (ranging between 10% and 67% of new HIV diagnoses). Of the 260 transgender women, 26 (10%) disengaged from care between 2011 and 2021 (incidence rate = 1.10 per 100 person‐years, 95% confidence interval = 0.75−1.61). Conclusions: Between 2011 and 2021, less than 90% of transgender women linked to HIV care were virally suppressed. Late presentation at the time of diagnosis and disengagement from care were common. Efforts are needed to identify barriers to early HIV diagnosis and to optimize the different steps across the care continuum for transgender women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The environment preservation has been an important motivation to find alternative, functional, and biodegradable materials to replace polluting petrochemicals. The production of nonbiodegradable face masks increased the concentration of microplastics in the environment, highlighting the need for sustainable alternatives, such as the use of local by‐products to create efficient and eco‐friendly filtering materials. Furthermore, the use of smart materials can reduce the risk of contagion and virus transmission, especially in the face of possible mutations. The development of novel materials is necessary to ensure less risk of contagion and virus transmission, as well as to preserve the environment. Taking these factors into account, 16 systems were developed with different combinations of precursor materials (holocellulose, polyaniline [ES‐PANI], graphene oxide [GO], silver nanoparticles [AgNPs], and activated carbon [AC]). Adsorption tests of the spike protein showed that the systems containing GO and AC were the most efficient in the adsorption process. Similarly, plate tests conducted using the VSV‐IN strain cultured in HepG2 cells showed that the system containing all phases showed the greatest reduction in viral titer method. In agreement, the biocompatibility tests showed that the compounds extracted from the systems showed low cytotoxicity or no significant cytotoxic effect in human fibroblasts. As a result, the adsorption tests of the spike protein, viral titration, and biocompatibility tests showed that systems labeled as I and J were the most efficient. In this context, the present research has significantly contributed to the technological development of antiviral systems, with improved properties and increased adsorption efficiency, reducing the viral titer and contributing efficiently to public health. In this way, these alternative materials could be employed in sensors and devices for filtering and sanitization, thus assisting in mitigating the transmission of viruses and bacteria. Objectives: External environmental heat exposure during gestation impacts the physiology of human development in utero, but evidence for these impacts has not yet been explored in dentition. We examined deciduous teeth for fluctuating asymmetry (FA), a measure of developmental instability, together with gestational environmental temperature data drawn from historical weather statistics. Materials and Methods: We measured dental casts from the longitudinal Burlington Growth Study, representing 172 participants (ages 3–6 years) with health records. FA was calculated from crown dimensions and intercuspal distances that develop during gestation. Multiple regression separated by sex (nfemale = 81) examined the effects of mean temperatures in each trimester, controlling for birth year. Results: In females, increased temperatures during the first trimester are significantly associated with an increase in FA (p = 0.03), specifically during the second and third prenatal months (p = 0.03). There is no relationship between temperature and FA for either sex in the second or third trimesters, when enamel is formed. Discussion: Dental instability may be sensitive to temperature in the first trimester in females during the scaffolding of crown shape and size in the earliest stages of tooth formation. Sexual dimorphism in growth investment strategies may explain the differences in results between males and females. The sorting and assembly machinery (SAM) Complex is responsible for assembling β‐barrel proteins in the mitochondrial membrane. Comprising three subunits, Sam35, Sam37, and Sam50, the SAM complex connects the inner and outer mitochondrial membranes by interacting with the mitochondrial contact site and cristae organizing system complex. Sam50, in particular, stabilizes the mitochondrial intermembrane space bridging (MIB) complex, which is crucial for protein transport, respiratory chain complex assembly, and regulation of cristae integrity. While the role of Sam50 in mitochondrial structure and metabolism in skeletal muscle remains unclear, this study aims to investigate its impact. Serial block‐face‐scanning electron microscopy and computer‐assisted 3D renderings were employed to compare mitochondrial structure and networking in Sam50‐deficient myotubes from mice and humans with wild‐type (WT) myotubes. Furthermore, autophagosome 3D structure was assessed in human myotubes. Mitochondrial metabolic phenotypes were assessed using Gas Chromatography‐Mass Spectrometry‐based metabolomics to explore differential changes in WT and Sam50‐deficient myotubes. The results revealed increased mitochondrial fragmentation and autophagosome formation in Sam50‐deficient myotubes compared to controls. Metabolomic analysis indicated elevated metabolism of propanoate and several amino acids, including ß‐Alanine, phenylalanine, and tyrosine, along with increased amino acid and fatty acid metabolism in Sam50‐deficient myotubes. Furthermore, impairment of oxidative capacity was observed upon Sam50 ablation in both murine and human myotubes, as measured with the XF24 Seahorse Analyzer. Collectively, these findings support the critical role of Sam50 in establishing and maintaining mitochondrial integrity, cristae structure, and mitochondrial metabolism. The direct electrochemical reduction of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) results in various products, complicating the regeneration of the crucial 1,4‐NADH cofactor for enzymatic reactions. Previous research primarily focused on steady–state polarization to examine potential impacts on product selectivity. However, this study explores the influence of dynamic conditions on the selectivity of NAD+ reduction products by comparing two dynamic profiles with steady‐state conditions. Our findings reveal that the main products, including 1,4‐NADH, several dimers, and ADP‐ribose, remained consistent across all conditions. A minor by–product, 1,6‐NADH, was also identified. The product distribution varied depending on the experimental conditions (steady state vs. dynamic) and the concentration of NAD+, with higher concentrations and overpotentials promoting dimerization. The optimal yield of 1,4‐NADH was achieved under steady–state conditions with low overpotential and NAD+ concentrations. While dynamic conditions enhanced the 1,4‐NADH yield at shorter reaction times, they also resulted in a significant amount of unidentified products. Furthermore, this study assessed the potential of using pulsed electrochemical regeneration of 1,4‐NADH with enoate reductase (XenB) for cyclohexenone reduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A combination of density measurement, differential scanning calorimetry, refractometry, and Raman and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is employed to characterize the evolution of the structure and physical properties of lithium disilicate (Li2Si2O5) and lead metasilicate (PbSiO3) glasses during physical aging. Both glasses display marked increase in density, enthalpy recovery, and refractive index following a temperature down‐jump near their glass transition regions. The collective analysis of Raman and NMR spectra reveals that the aging‐induced structural relaxation in these silicate networks involves a significant disproportionation of Q‐species as well as their spatial clustering. Adolescents experience significant developmental changes during a time of heightened sensitivity to social cues, particularly rejection by peers, which can be especially overwhelming for those with elevated levels of social anxiety. Social evaluative decision‐making tasks have been useful in uncovering the neural correlates of information processing biases; however, linking youths' task‐based performance to individual differences in psychopathology (e.g., anxiety symptoms) has proven more elusive. Here, we address this weakness with drift diffusion modeling to decompose youths' performance on the social judgment paradigm (SJP) to determine if this approach is useful in discovering individual differences in anxiety symptoms, as well as puberty, age, and sex. A sample of 103 adolescents (55 males, Mage = 14.49, SD = 1.69) completed the SJP and self‐report measures of anxiety, as well as self‐ and parent‐reported measures of puberty. The decision threshold parameter, reflecting the amount of evidence needed to make a social evaluative decision, predicted youth self‐reported anxiety, above and beyond typical metrics of SJP performance. Our results highlight the potential advantage of parsing task performance according to the underlying cognitive processes. Future research would likely benefit from applying computational modeling approaches to social judgment tasks when attempting to uncover performance‐based individual differences in psychopathology. Objectives: Early colonial documents from central Mesoamerica detail raising and planting of European livestock and crops alongside native ones. The extent to which Indigenous people, especially of the rural commoner class, consumed newly introduced foods is less known. This gap in knowledge is addressed through stable isotope analysis and comparison to published archaeological botanical, human, and faunal data. Materials and Methods: Stable isotope analysis of bone collagen and bioapatite is applied to 74 skeletal samples of Indigenous human remains representing Colonial period individuals from El Japón—a farming hamlet in the Xochimilco area—to provide insight into long‐term individual dietary practices in the context of a rapidly transforming Mesoamerican world. Results: Carbon isotope ratios in collagen (δ13Ccollagen) average −8.10/00 VPDB (SD 0.55), while δ15N averages 8.90/00 AIR (SD 0.50). δ13Cbioapatite averages −2.90/00 VPDB (SD 0.60). Modest increase in carbon isotopic diversity is observed among more recent males from El Japón when compared to earlier males and females. Discussion: Based on the isotopic results, it is estimated that the individuals of El Japón consumed maize or other C4 plants as a central source of carbohydrates. Dietary protein was largely supplied through domestic maize‐fed fauna but potentially supplemented by wild terrestrial and aquatic fauna and fowl. Similarity in skeletal isotopic composition between precontact Mesoamericans from other sites and El Japón individuals of both earlier and later stratigraphy is interpreted as continuity in local diets and foodways despite potentially available European alternatives. Colonial taxation demands on preexisting agricultural regimes may have incentivized maize production, thus indirectly contributing to the maize‐centered aspect of local foodways. How do capital controls and banking concentration affect economic development? This paper develops a general equilibrium model to study these important issues. To do so, we construct a framework with heterogeneous agents and imperfectly competitive financial intermediaries who help depositors manage liquidity risk. Importantly, higher levels of concentration raise the cost of domestic borrowing which increase the reliance on international capital markets. Many European cropped soils have high soil test P (STP) values in the top soil because of P accumulation over many years of fertilizer application. This should allow to save P fertilizer applications for some years without STP values decreasing to a level that might negatively impact crop yield. However, the way STP develops under omitted P fertilizer application is not well understood. We examined STP development under omitted P fertilizer application for timeframes between 7 and 46 years on 96 unfertilized treatments (P0 treatments) of 43 European long‐term P field experiments, using five different STP methods. For comparability, values obtained by different STP methods were converted to Olsen‐P concentrations. We fitted exponential decay curves to Olsen‐P data of each P0 treatment defined by initial Olsen‐P values (Olsen‐Pi), rates of decrease (k) and asymptotes (A), reflecting minimum obtainable STP. Subsequently, we analysed whether the variables most commonly recorded in experiments, are sufficient to explain the variation in model parameters, these variables being P export, clay content, Corg and pH as well as average annual temperature and precipitation. We found that out of our predictor variables, soil clay content, precipitation and temperature were showing the most prominent effects on the parameters Olsen‐Pi, A or k. However, the amount of variation explained by the considered variables was too low to potentially facilitate a prediction of STP decrease, and various P0 treatments showed no clear Olsen‐P decrease or unexpectedly high asymptotes. This hints at a strong influence of the P sorption capacity of the soil with often high potential for replenishment from less available P pools. In connection with P introduction from the subsoil or possibly from surrounding plots, the extension of timeframes of omitted P fertilizer application without reaching critical STP values for crop production, might be explainable. Corresponding effects could not be analysed because of lack of data for most P0 treatments, calling for the additional determination of, for example, the maximum P sorption capacity, total P and subsoil P in future experiments. Background: A nonvolitional diagnostic method based on FES‐Cycling technology has recently been demonstrated for mechanically ventilated patients. This method presents good sensitivity and specificity for detecting muscle dysfunction and survival prognosis, even in unconscious patients. As the clinical relevance of this method has already been reported, we aimed to evaluate its safety and feasibility. Methods: An observational prospective study was carried out with 20 critically ill, mechanically ventilated patients. The FES‐cycling equipment was set in a specific diagnostic mode. For safety determination, hemodynamic parameters and peripheral oxygen saturation were measured before and immediately after the diagnostic protocol, as well as venous oxygen saturation and blood lactate. The creatine phosphokinase level (CPK) was measured before and 24, 48, and 72 h after the test. The time taken to carry out the entire diagnostic protocol and the number of patients with visible muscle contraction (capacity of perceptive muscular recruitment) were recorded to assess feasibility. Results: Heart rate [91 ± 23 vs. 94 ± 23 bpm (p = 0.0837)], systolic [122 ± 19 vs. 124 ± 19 mm Hg (p = 0.4261)] and diastolic blood pressure [68 ± 13 vs. 70 ± 15 mm Hg (p = 0.3462)], and peripheral [98 (96–99) vs. 98 (95–99) % (p = 0.6353)] and venous oxygen saturation [71 ± 14 vs. 69 ± 14% (p = 0.1317)] did not change after the diagnostic protocol. Moreover, blood lactate [1.48 ± 0.65 vs. 1.53 ± 0.71 mmol/L (p = 0.2320)] did not change. CPK did not change up to 72 h after the test [99 (59–422) vs. 125 (66–674) (p = 0.2799) vs. 161 (66–352) (p > 0.999) vs. 100 (33–409) (p = 0.5901)]. The time taken to perform the diagnostic assessment was 11.3 ± 1.1 min. In addition, 75% of the patients presented very visible muscle contractions, and 25% of them presented barely visible muscle contractions. Conclusions: The FES cycling‐based muscular dysfunction diagnostic method is safe and feasible. Hemodynamic parameters, peripheral oxygen saturation, venous oxygen saturation, and blood lactate did not change after the diagnostic protocol. Here, we quantify the relationship between microphase segregation and local structure development in thermoplastic polyurethanes. Samples were prepared with varying ratios of 4,4′‐methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4‐butanediol (BDO) to polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) and annealed at temperatures Ta between RT–140 °C for 20 h each. Distinct populations of smaller and larger ordered domains are distinguished by pair distribution function analysis. The intermediate‐range order of nanoscale hard domains in the paracrystalline state (form I) is directly extracted and characterized. The results suggest that form I of the MDI‐BDO:PTHF system presents a conformational and packing order similar to the form III structure, typically obtained from stretching/annealing, but with limited spatial coherence of 3–7 nm. Heating above Tg of the hard segments is necessary to achieve a substantial structural response from the annealing treatment. Increasing Ta promotes purification of the soft phase via microphase segregation, coalescence of the hard blocks, and growth of paracrystalline phase, while a minority fraction of longer‐range ordered domains left over from production remains relatively constant. We observe a composition‐dependent decrease in the average nearest‐neighbor distance that can be correlated with the greater number of CC, CN, and CO bonds with increased hard segment content. A non‐linear deviation in the trend is observed to correlate with sample densification. The mechanical and thermal behavior of the samples is intimately tied to the segregation state. Background: Pompe Disease (PD) is a metabolic myopathy caused by variants in the GAA gene, resulting in deficient enzymatic activity. We aimed to characterize the clinical features and related genetic variants in a series of Mexican patients. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of clinical records of patients diagnosed with LOPD, IOPD or pseudodeficiency. Results: Twenty‐nine patients were included in the study, comprising these three forms. Overall, age of symptom onset was 0.1 to 43 years old. The most frequent variant identified was c.‐32‐13T>G, which was detected in 14 alleles. Among the 23 different variants identified in the GAA gene, 14 were classified as pathogenic, 5 were likely pathogenic, and 1 was a variant of uncertain significance. Two variants were inherited in cis arrangement and 2 were pseudodeficiency‐related benign alleles. We identified two novel variants (c.1615 G>A and c.1076‐20_1076‐4delAAGTCGGCGTTGGCCTG). Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this series represent the largest phenotypic and genotypic characterization of patients with PD in Mexico. Patients within our series exhibited a combination of LOPD and IOPD associated variants, which may be related to genetic diversity within Mexican population. While some established undergraduate summer programs are effective across many institutions, these programs may only be available to some principal investigators or may not fully address the diverse needs of incoming undergraduates. This article outlines a 10‐week science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) education program designed to prepare undergraduate students for graduate school through a unique model incorporating mentoring dyads and triads, cultural exchanges, and diverse activities while emphasizing critical thinking, research skills, and cultural sensitivity. Specifically, we offer a straightforward and adaptable guide that we have used for mentoring undergraduate students in a laboratory focused on mitochondria and microscopy, but which may be customized for other disciplines. Key components include self‐guided projects, journal clubs, various weekly activities such as mindfulness training and laboratory techniques, and a focus on individual and cultural expression. Beyond this unique format, this 10‐week program also seeks to offer an intensive research program that emulates graduate‐level experiences, offering an immersive environment for personal and professional development, which has led to numerous achievements for past students, including publications and award‐winning posters. Objective: To assess the impact of scatter radiation on quantitative performance of first and second‐generation dual‐layer spectral computed tomography (DLCT) systems. Method: A phantom with two iodine inserts (1 and 2 mg/mL) configured to intentionally introduce high scattering conditions was scanned with a first‐ and second‐generation DLCT. Collimation widths (maximum of 4 cm for first generation and 8 cm for second generation) and radiation dose levels were varied. To evaluate the performance of both systems, the mean CT numbers of virtual monoenergetic images (MonoEs) at different energies were calculated and compared to expected values. MonoEs at 50 versus 150 keV were plotted to assess material characterization of both DLCTs. Additionally, iodine concentrations were determined, plotted, and compared against expected values. For each experimental scenario, absolute errors were reported. Results: An experimental setup, including a phantom design, was successfully implemented to simulate high scatter radiation imaging conditions. Both CT scanners illustrated high spectral accuracy for small collimation widths (1 and 2 cm). With increased collimation (4 cm), the second‐generation DLCT outperformed the earlier DLCT system. Further, the spectral performance of the second‐generation DLCT at an 8 cm collimation width was comparable to a 4 cm collimation on the first‐generation DLCT. A comparison of the absolute errors between both systems at lower energy MonoEs illustrates that, for the same acquisition parameters, the second‐generation DLCT generated results with decreased errors. Similarly, the maximum error in iodine quantification was less with second‐generation DLCT (0.45 and 0.33 mg/mL for the first and second‐generation DLCT, respectively). Conclusion: The implementation of a two‐dimensional anti‐scatter grid in the second‐generation DLCT improves the spectral quantification performance. A wide spectrum of tumors may affect the periungual spaces of the digits. Superficial acral fibromyxoma (SAF) is a rare, benign soft tissue tumor with diverse clinical presentations. We present a case of a 55‐year‐old woman with a 2‐year history of a solitary periungual tumor on the left thumb, subjected to multiple episodes of trauma. Initially suspected to be a periungual squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) based on clinical and dermoscopic features, the tumor was confirmed to be a CD34− SAF through histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Although CD34 immunoreactivity is common in SAF, one‐third of these tumors, including this case, do not stain for this marker. Periungual SCC considered a “great mimicker of nail tumors,” may resemble other benign nail tumors such as SAF. The patient underwent complete surgical excision with primary closure, resulting in no recurrence after 1 year. This case highlights SAF as an underrecognized benign entity that may manifest with features suspicious of malignancy, potentially leading to unnecessarily aggressive interventions. Recognizing SAF through accurate biopsy techniques and thorough histopathologic evaluation, even in the absence of CD34 reactivity, is crucial for appropriate treatment and preservation of hand function and appearance.
