The strategic design of traditional coating materials has long been pivotal in broadening their range of applications. In this work, europium‐doped TiO2 coatings are grown in situ on the surface of titanium substrate using plasma electrolytic oxidation technology. The core reaction took no more than five minutes. Incorporating europium into the coating preserved the inherent corrosion resistance of PEO coatings while imparting anticipated thermal‐sensitive luminescence capabilities. The intrinsic emission of TiO2 and the characteristic emission of Eu3+ (5D0 → 7F2) are employed as the self‐reference for the LIR thermometry. The absolute and relative temperature sensitivity of the coating reached 0.0087 K−1 and 0.739% K−1, respectively. Notably, the coating exhibited a signal discriminability of up to 5100 cm−1 and a temperature uncertainty of only 0.18 K, which is comparable to some TiO2: Eu nanoparticles. The ingenious fusion of corrosion resistance and thermal‐sensitive luminescence of the coating not only makes it a classic protective structure but also facilitates its applicability to diverse scenarios, including optical thermometry in extreme environments. Experiments using a transmission electron microscope decomposed zirconium acetylacetonate with an electron beam, forming zirconium nanoparticles on graphene. Continued electron irradiation transformed these nanoparticles into atomically thick zirconium islets (zirconene islets) within the graphene lattice. The electron beam caused zirconium atom dislocations and vacancies that are rapidly refilled, a process repeating until the vacancies evolved into zirconium nanoribbons before breaking. This study offers insights into the electron‐driven growth and degradation of zirconene islets, showcasing a method to fabricate freestanding zirconenes for use as atomically thin coatings in extreme environments. The structural integrity and continuity are prerequisites for exploiting the performance advantages of aerogels, while limitations in mechanical properties, such as low strength, high brittleness, and poor processability confine fully intact aerogels to laboratory settings. Here, a composite aerogel SPCCAM designed with hierarchical structuring into 1D building blocks at the nanoscale and honeycomb‐like anisotropic architecture at the microscale is presented. The inner carboxylated cellulose nanofiber core (CNFs‐C) exhibits much higher strength than the intermediate polybenzoxazine (PBOZ) shell, and the interface is highly reinforced by a crosslinked network of amino and hydrogen bonds, forming a highly stable 1D building block. Superhydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticle (hydrophobic‐260) is discretely distributed on the outer surface of the PBOZ shell, resulting in a nanoscale lotus leaf effect. Thus, the SPCCAM demonstrates outstanding properties including ultrahigh strength, excellent deformability and fatigue resistance, good machinability, ultralow thermal conductivity and coefficient of linear expansion, and superhydrophobicity from the inside out and long‐term hydrophobic stability along the radial direction of microscale channels, defining a novel method for designing aerogels with superior integrated mechanical, thermal insulation, and hydrophobic properties, and offering an attractive solution for high‐efficiency thermal insulators in high‐moisture extreme environments, such as deep‐sea and polar regions. Contemporary symbioses in extreme environments can give an insight into mechanisms that stabilize species interactions during environmental change. The intertidal sea anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima, engages in a nutritional symbiosis with microalgae similar to tropical coral, but withstands more intense environmental fluctuations during tidal inundations. In this study, we compare baseline symbiotic traits and their sensitivity to thermal stress within and among anemone aggregations across the intertidal using a laboratory‐based tank experiment to better understand how fixed genotypic and plastic environmental effects contribute to the successful maintenance of this symbiosis in extreme habitats. High intertidal anemones had lower baseline symbiont‐to‐host cell ratios under control conditions, but their symbionts had higher baseline photosynthetic efficiency compared to low intertidal anemone symbionts. Symbiont communities were identical across all samples, suggesting that shifts in symbiont density and photosynthetic performance could be an acclimatory mechanism to maintain symbiosis in different environments. Despite lower baseline symbiont‐to‐host cell ratios, high intertidal anemones maintained greater symbiont‐to‐host cell ratios under heat stress compared with low intertidal anemones, suggesting greater thermal tolerance of high intertidal holobionts. However, the thermal tolerance of clonal anemones acclimatized to different zones was not explained by tidal height alone, indicating additional environmental variables contribute to physiological differences. Host genotype significantly influenced anemone weight, but only explained a minor proportion of variation among symbiotic traits and their response to thermal stress, further implicating environmental history as the primary driver of holobiont tolerance. These results indicate that this symbiosis is highly plastic and may be able to acclimatize to climate change over ecological timescales, defying the convention that symbiotic organisms are more susceptible to environmental stress. Experimental evolution was carried out to investigate the adaptive responses of extremotolerant fungi to a stressful environment. For 12 cultivation cycles, the halotolerant black yeasts Aureobasidium pullulans and Aureobasidium subglaciale were grown at high NaCl or glycerol concentrations, and the halophilic basidiomycete Wallemia ichthyophaga was grown close to its lower NaCl growth limit. All evolved Aureobasidium spp. accelerated their growth at low water activity. Whole genomes of the evolved strains were sequenced. No aneuploidies were detected in any of the genomes, contrary to previous studies on experimental evolution at high salinity with other species. However, several hundred single‐nucleotide polymorphisms were identified compared with the genomes of the progenitor strains. Two functional groups of genes were overrepresented among the genes presumably affected by single‐nucleotide polymorphisms: voltage‐gated potassium channels in A. pullulans at high NaCl concentration, and hydrophobins in W. ichthyophaga at low NaCl concentration. Both groups of genes were previously associated with adaptation to high salinity. Finally, most evolved Aureobasidium spp. strains were found to have increased intracellular and decreased extracellular glycerol concentrations at high salinity, suggesting that the strains have optimised their management of glycerol, their most important compatible solute. Experimental evolution therefore not only confirmed the role of potassium transport, glycerol management, and cell wall in survival at low water activity, but also demonstrated that fungi from extreme environments can further improve their growth rates under constant extreme conditions in a relatively short time and without large scale genomic rearrangements. The integration of thermal and electromagnetic interference (EMI) insulation is of great significance for fields such as aerospace that face extreme environments. The challenge lies in ensuring that the protective layer is lightweight while simultaneously possessing the ability to suppress heat conduction, heat convection, thermal radiation, and electromagnetic radiation. To address these challenges, we propose a novel ultralight all‐fiber‐structure composite sponge, yttria‐stabilized zirconia/polyvinyl butyral‐supported silver (YAP) nanofiber sponge, with ultralight mass (∼65 mg/cm3), exceptionally low thermal conductivity (21 mW/m K at 25°C, and 329 mW/m K at 500°C), and remarkable EMI shielding effectiveness (∼62.6 dB). Moreover, benefiting from its all‐fiber‐structure, the YAP nanofiber sponge can endure 100 cycles of compression up to 50% of its original volume while retaining its mechanical properties with minimal degradation. These characteristics render YAP nanofiber sponge an ideal material for integrated thermal and EMI insulation, offering a promising solution to the rigorous demands of extreme environment protection such as space exploration. Since the beginning of the new century, the objectives of deep space exploration missions targeting celestial bodies such as the Moon and Mars shift from "understanding celestial bodies" to "utilizing celestial bodies." With respect to the successful operation of various load missions, secondary battery systems play a crucial role in supplying energy. However, unlike terrestrial environment, extremely harsh extraterrestrial conditions, including extreme temperatures and radiation, severely limit the application of batteries in deep spaces. This work covers recent advancements in batteries, including electrolyte/electrode optimization strategies and thermal management under extreme low‐ and high‐temperature conditions and the mechanism analysis of key battery components under radiation environments. Compared to conventional gels, eutectogels encompassing deep eutectic solvents (DESs) circumvent the shortboards including poor temperature resistance, high cost, and undesired toxicity. However, existing eutectogels suffer weak intra‐ and interchain interactions, which culminates in vanishing autofluorescence, weak mechanic and feeble adhesion. Although myriad strategies have been proposed to boost the polymer/polymer interactions within gels, the processes are time‐consuming, which are not suitable for mass production or emergent deployment. Herein, to deal with it, a facile solvation chemistry is leveraged to build dynamic rigid network via incorporating active polymer backbones and DESs. Within these eutectogels, DESs play a magnet‐like role, and physically cluster polymer chains together via multiple noncovalent forces, thus intensifying polymer/polymer and DESs/polymer interactions. This solvation network bestows rare autofluorescence and unprecedentedly high strength, toughness, and adhesion among reported analogues, even in harsh conditions. Moreover, the mechanism of solvation chemistry is fully scrutinized for the first time. It is believed that this facile strategy can be easily expanded to the orchestrations of other soft materials. Lithium batteries, holding great potential in future deep‐space and deep‐sea exploration, have extensively utilized in probes for extreme environments. However, the complex and harsh external physical forces, including radiation field, ultrasonic field, gravity field, magnetic field, temperature field, and other extreme environments, in isolation or combination, demand severe requirements for unique onboard power supplies. Herein, the fundamental understanding of the service behavior of lithium batteries in external extreme physical fields is focused on. Specifically, based on the unique physicochemical principle originated from these external extreme forces, the underlying mechanisms of external physical fields affecting thermodynamic and kinetic processes of liquid phase mass transfer, interface formation and evolution, and electrochemical deposition are emphatically highlighted. Moreover, with equal attention paid to the enhancement and degradation caused by extreme physical fields, recent progress in the service behavior of lithium batteries is thoroughly analyzed. Furthermore, strategies are scrutinized for mitigating the negative impacts of external physical fields and provide an overview of the comprehensive impacts of external muti‐physical fields. Finally, the potential challenges and future outlook of developing special power sources for deep space and deep sea exploration are proposed. Aerogel fibers, known for their lightweight and exceptional thermal insulation properties, provide an ideal material solution for fabricating triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) for self‐powered wearable electronics in extreme environments, such as firefighting gear. However, current aerogel fibers face limitations due to their poor mechanical properties and lack of performance stability under harsh conditions. Herein, a facile strategy for preparing silica/aramid nanofiber (ANF) composite aerogel fibers with interpenetrated dual networks and a silica‐dominant component (≈64 wt.%) is demonstrated; the unique structure and composition endow the composite aerogel fibers with high tensile strength (3.4 MPa), low thermal conductivity (0.033 W (m·K)−1), a large specific surface area (587 m2 g−1), and outstanding fire resistance at 95% porosity, combining the best properties of both ANF and silica aerogel. Moreover, the composite aerogel fibers exhibit excellent mechanical flexibility at extremely low temperatures (−196 °C) and maintain structural integrity even when exposed to flame for up to 5 min. Leveraging these exceptional properties, composite aerogel fiber‐based TENGs show high electrical output performance before and after combustion (>94% retention). The fabrication strategy offers promising opportunities for modulating the properties and functionalities of aerogel fibers on demand, holding great potential for future applications in wearable smart protective fabrics for extreme environments. The development of next‐generation 6G communications is anticipated to expand into extreme environments, necessitating superior terahertz (THz) electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. Herein, structural stability, electronic and optical properties of rare earth silicide carbide Yb3Si2C2 are investigated using first principles density functional calculations and semi‐classical Boltzmann transport theory. The calculation results show Yb3Si2C2 is determined to be experimentally synthesized with high temperature stability with a certain fluctuating C2 pair orientation. In addition, Yb3Si2C2 is identified as a soft, tough, and damage‐resistant ceramic with low shear deformation resistance and easy cleavage, ensuring its durability in irradiation environments. Due to the layered structure and excellent electrical conductivity, Yb3Si2C2 demonstrates high reflectivity and low transmittance for terahertz electromagnetic waves, along with 62% solar absorptivity and 33% IR emissivity. Remarkably, the total shielding effectiveness of Yb3Si2C2 with thicknesses of 5 µm and above follows the widely‐used Simon's formula. The average total shielding effectiveness of 5 µm‐thick and 10 µm‐thick Yb3Si2C2 across the entire THz region reaches 63 and 110 dB, respectively, which turns out to be the top compared to the results reported. Therefore, the multifunctional intrinsic properties of Yb3Si2C2 materials hold great promise for miniaturized, high‐performance terahertz EMI shielding, even in extreme environments. Flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity over a broad sensing range are of great value in daily life and highly desired in various extreme environment, from human motion inspection to heavy industrial robots to high energy radiation and extremely cold/high temperature environments. However, it remains a significant challenge for a single pressure sensor to simultaneously possess high sensitivity and broad detection range due to the trade‐off between these two properties. Here, a high‐performance pressure sensor is developed based on flexible modified silicon rubber/functionalized carbon nanotube (MSR/FCNT). The designed nested‐cell architecture and molecular surface modification strategy endow the pressure sensor with high sensitivity (>28 kPa−1) over 10 MPa sensing range, an ultralow detection limit (≈0.94 Pa), an ultrahigh pressure resolution (0.0075%) at a pressure of 3 MPa, and a low fatigue over 10 000 repetitive cycles even at an extremely high pressure of 5 MPa. Furthermore, the resulting sensor presents excellent durability after freezing at extreme cold temperature (−80 °C) as well as resistance to high temperature (200 °C) and high‐energy X‐ray radiation. Fabricating strain sensors with high response in a wide temperature and strain range is still a challenge, especially in high temperature harsh environments. Herein, a dual‐functional sensor with cantilever beam structure is fabricated using polymer‐derived SiCN ceramics, which can be applied for temperature and stain monitor. The performance of the integrated sensor is evaluated from room temperature to 1000 °C and the related sensing mechanism is analyzed. The prepared strain sensor has ultrafast response of 60 ms in the strain range of 0–3500 µε and the maximum strain rate can reach 46 200 µε s−1. Moreover, the sensor has excellent stability and ultra‐high sensitivity under high temperature environments. Additionally, the temperature can be detected separately up to 1000 °C without any disturbance. This attractive integration sensor with competitive sensitivity, excellent stability, ultrafast response speed, and broad range, has great potential to detect temperature and strain signals for practical application in high temperature extreme environments. The application of portable aluminum‐air batteries (AABs) in extreme environments is an inevitable demand for future development. Aqueous electrolyte freezing is a major challenge for low‐temperature operations. Conventionally, enlightened by the organic system in metal ion batteries, blindly increasing the concentration is regarded as an efficient technique to reduce the freezing point (FP). However, the underlying contradiction between the adjusting mechanism of the FP and OH− transportation is ignored. Herein, the aqueous alkali solution of CsOH is researched as a prototype to disclose the intrinsic conductive behavior and related solvent structure evolution. Different from these inorganic electrolyte systems, the concept of a critical anti‐freezing concentration (CFC) is proposed based on a specific temperature. The relationship between hydrogen bond reconstruction and de‐solvation behavior is analyzed. A high conductivity is obtained at −30 °C, which is also a recorded value in an intrinsic aqueous AAB. Polymers may suffer from sudden mechanical damages during long‐term use under various harsh operating environments. Rapid and real‐time self‐healing will extend their service life, which is particularly attractive in the context of circular economy. In this work, a lignin cluster polymerization strategy (LCPS) was designed to prepare a series of lignin functionalized polyolefin composites with excellent mechanical properties through nickel catalyzed copolymerization of ethylene and lignin cluster monomers. These composites can achieve rapid self‐healing within 30 seconds under a variety of extreme usage environments (underwater, seawater, extremely low temperatures as low as −60 °C, organic solvents, acid/alkali solvents, etc.), which is of great significance for real‐time self‐healing of sudden mechanical damage. In advanced photonics, there is a growing interest in piezochromic luminescent materials that exhibit multicolor switching, driven by their potential applications in optical recording, memory, and sensors. Here, the piezochromic behavior of 2,4,6‐triphenylpyrylium tetrachloroferrate (Py‐FeCl4) under high pressures from 0 to 9 GPa is reported. The observed multicolor changing properties of Py‐FeCl4 (yellow–orange–red–maroon–black) are found to be fully reversible upon decompression to ambient conditions. The mechanism of Py‐FeCl4 piezochromism is investigated via Raman, infrared, and UV–vis spectroscopy combined with powder X‐ray Diffraction. The absence of structural phase transitions as well as the abrupt shifts of bandgap values together with characteristic Raman and IR peaks within 0‐9 GPa suggests that the Py‐FeCl4 multicoloring switching behavior is driven by an electron transfer between the inorganic FeCl4− anion and the organic pyrylium cation. The obtained results demonstrate that Py‐FeCl4 dye is a good candidate for developing high‐pressure sensing technologies designed to function in extreme environments. Moreover, due to the inherent role of molecular‐structure relationships in the pyrylium salt's photophysical properties, findings suggest the potential discovery of piezochromic behavior in other pyrylium compounds. Oceanic archipelagos provide striking examples of lineages that have radiated over pronounced ecological gradients. Accompanying this diversification, lineages have evolved adaptations allowing survival in extreme environments. Here, we investigate the genomic basis of ecological adaptation in Canary Island Descurainia (Brassicaceae), an island relative of Arabidopsis. The seven endemic species have diversified in situ along an elevational and ecological gradient, from low‐elevation scrub to high‐elevation sub‐alpine desert. We first generated a reference genome for Descurainia millefolia, phylogenetic analysis of which placed it as sister to D. sophioides. Ninety‐six gene families were found to be specific to D. millefolia and a further 1087 and 1469 gene families have expanded or contracted in size, respectively, along the D. millefolia branch. We then employed genome re‐sequencing to sample 14 genomes across the seven species of Canary Island Descurainia and an outgroup. Phylogenomic analyses were consistent with previous reconstructions of Canary Island Descurainia in resolving low‐ and high‐elevation clades. Using the branch‐site dN/dS method, we detected positive selection for 275 genes on the branch separating the low‐ and high‐elevation species and these positively selected genes (PSGs) were significantly enriched for functions related to reproduction and stress tolerance. Comparing PSGs to those in analyses of adaptation to elevation and/or latitude in other Brassicaceae, we found little evidence of widespread convergence and gene reuse, except for two examples, one of which was a significant overlap between Descurainia and Draba nivalis, a species restricted to high latitudes. The study of Canary Island Descurainia suggests that the transition to high‐elevation environments such as that found in the high mountains of the Canary Islands involves selection on genes related to reproduction and stress tolerance but that repeated evolution across different lineages that have evolved into similar habitats is limited, indicating substantially different molecular trajectories to adaptation. Botryosphaeriaceae fungi cause infections that generate disease symptoms in plants in extreme environments. The present study identified the causal agent of dieback disease on lebbeck trees in Saudi Arabia. Albizia lebbeck trees showed widespread dieback, decline and cracking symptoms of samples taken during a Qassim University, Saudi Arabia survey. The survey showed that over 80% of lebbeck trees showed wilted roots, stem cankers and death of wilted trees. Fungal colonies were obtained from symptomatic tissues cultured on water agar for 3 weeks at 25°C. Elongation factor alpha (EF1‐728 F, AL33R), ITS (ITS4) and LSU (128) regions of the rDNA operon and the partial beta‐tubulin gene (tub2; Bt2aF, Bt2bR) were sequenced for molecular identification. Based on morphological and molecular characterization, the pathogen was identified as Neoscytalidium dimidiatum. During the pathogenicity investigation, the fungus re‐isolated from the infected seedlings expressed the same morphological characteristics on the culture media as the N. dimidiatum isolate. A host range study involving six tree species inoculation with N. dimidiatum caused wilting and death in three plants. The burden of growing concern about the dysregulation of metabolic processes arises due to complex interplay between environment and nutrition that has great impact on genetics and epigenetics of an individual. Thereby, any abnormality at the level of food intake regulating hormones may contribute to the development of metabolic diseases in any age group due to malnutrition, overweight, changing lifestyle, and exposure to extreme environments such as heat stress (HS), cold stress, or high altitude (HA). Hormones such as leptin, adiponectin, ghrelin, and cholecystokinin regulate appetite and satiety to maintain energy homeostasis. Leptin, an adipokine and a pleiotropic hormone, play major role in regulating the food intake, energy gain and energy expenditure. Using in silico approach, we have identified the major genes (LEP, LEPR, JAK2, STAT3, NPY, POMC, IRS1, SOCS3) that play crucial role in leptin signaling pathway. Further, eight miRNAs (hsa‐miR‐204‐5p, hsa‐miR‐211‐5p, hsa‐miR‐30, hsa‐miR‐3163, hsa‐miR‐33a‐3p, hsa‐miR‐548, hsa‐miR‐561‐3p, hsa‐miR‐7856‐5p) from TargetScan 8.0 database were screened out that commonly target these genes. The role of these miRNAs should be explored as they might play vital role in regulating the appetite, energy metabolism, metabolic diseases (obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, inflammation), and to combat extreme environments. This paper discusses a method of determining the minimum safe altitude of an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) at any point within a designated airspace by conducting a glide reachability analysis. Recently, fixed‐wing UAVs are more regularly deployed near population centers and in extreme environments, requiring increasingly robust emergency systems and planning. The long‐ranges and adverse terrain associated with monitoring the Volcán de Fuego in Guatemala by a team from the University of Bristol (UoB) increases the likelihood that motor failure would result in the aircraft being unable to Return To Home (RTH) and impossible to retrieve. A method for delineating a boundary representing the minimum safe altitude required for the aircraft to safely glide to the airfield in the event of a motor failure was developed within MATLAB, defined by the UAV's minimum glide angle in wind. This model was subsequently compared with flight data from UoB missions around Fuego to better improve its accuracy and analyze the limitations of the missions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Piezochromic materials refer to a class of matters that alter their photoluminescence (PL) colors in response to the external stimuli, which exhibit promising smart applications in anti‐counterfeiting, optoelectronic memory and pressure‐sensing. However, so far, most reported piezochromic materials have been confined to organic materials or hybrid materials containing organic moieties with limited piezochromic range of less than 100 nm in visible region. Here, we achieved an intriguing piezochromism in all‐inorganic zero‐dimensional (0D) Cs3Cu2Cl5 nanocrystals (NCs) with a considerable piezochromic range of 232 nm because of their unique inorganic rigid structure. The PL energy shifted from the lowest‐energy red fluorescence (1.85 eV) to the highest‐energy blue fluorescence (2.83 eV), covering almost the entire visible wavelength range. Pressure‐modulated self‐trapped exciton emission between different energy levels of self‐trapped states within Cs3Cu2Cl5 NCs was the main reason for this piezochromism property. Note that the quenched emission, which is over five times more intense than that in the initial state, is retained under ambient conditions upon decompression. SUMMARY Photosynthetic and chemosynthetic extremophiles have evolved adaptations to thrive in challenging environments by finely adjusting their metabolic pathways through evolutionary processes. A prime adaptation target to allow autotrophy in extreme conditions is the enzyme Rubisco, which plays a central role in the conversion of inorganic to organic carbon. Here, we present an extensive compilation of Rubisco kinetic traits from a wide range of species of bacteria, archaea, algae, and plants, sorted by phylogenetic group, Rubisco type, and extremophile type. Our results show that Rubisco kinetics for the few extremophile organisms reported up to date are placed at the margins of the enzyme's natural variability. Form ID Rubisco from thermoacidophile rhodophytes and form IB Rubisco from halophile terrestrial plants exhibit higher specificity and affinity for CO2 than their non‐extremophilic counterparts, as well as higher carboxylation efficiency, whereas form ID Rubisco from psychrophile organisms possess lower affinity for O2. Additionally, form IB Rubisco from thermophile cyanobacteria shows enhanced CO2 specificity when compared to form IB non‐extremophilic cyanobacteria. Overall, these findings highlight the unique characteristics of extremophile Rubisco enzymes and provide useful clues to guide next explorations aimed at finding more efficient Rubiscos. Energy conversion, particularly light to heat conversion, has garnered significant attention owing to its prospect in renewable energy exploitation and utilization. Most previous efforts have focused on developing organic photothermal materials for low‐temperature applications, whereas the importance of simplifying the preparation methods of photothermal materials and enhancing their maximum photothermal temperature have been less taken. Herein, we prepare an organic near‐infrared (NIR) photothermal material namely ATT by a spontaneous [2+2] cycloaddition‐cycloreversion reaction. In addition to the solution‐based method, ATT could also be readily preapred by ball milling in a high yield of 90 % in just 15 min. ATT powder exhibits a broad absorption extending beyond 2000 nm, excellent processability, and thermal stability. Remarkably, ATT powder can reach an unprecedently temperature as high as 450 °C while maintaining excellent photostability upon photoirradiation. Leveraging its extraordinary photothermal and processable properties, ATT was used in the high‐temperature applications, such as photo‐ignition, photo‐controlled metal processing and high‐temperature shape memory, all of which offer spatiotemporal control capabilities. Aramid nanofibers (ANFs) are a strong and heat‐resistant nanomaterial that can be isolated from commercial para‐aramid fibers, which allow a bottom‐up self‐assembly to form ordered macroscale structures like ANF films. However, the anisotropic nature of high aspect ratio ANFs is not fully exploited when fabricating ANF films for the optimal mechanical properties. In this research, direct ink writing (DIW) is applied to produce ANF‐assembled films with arbitrary shapes, and the shear‐induced alignment of ANFs can follow the printing path direction. Therefore, controlled alignment of ANFs following the computer‐programmed printing pattern is achieved by DIW, which provides a path for the application of topology and nanofiber alignment optimization in nanofiber‐assembled films. In addition, the resulting DIW ANF films exhibit outstanding Young's modulus of 8.39 GPa, tensile strength of 198 MPa, and tensile toughness of 19.4 MJ m−3 in the alignment direction, together with a wide working temperature range up to 440 °C without losing 50% of its room temperature storage modulus. Moreover, the demonstrated self‐joining ability, rollability, and lamination processability of the DIW ANF films expand their potential applications toward high‐temperature ultrathin tubes, substrates for flexible printed circuit boards, and three‐dimensional all‐ANF lightweight structural parts in extreme environments. The tailings dump of Barraxiutta (Sardinia, Italy) contains considerable concentrations of heavy metals and, consequently, is scarcely colonized by plants. However, wild populations of the liverwort Lunularia cruciata (L.) Dum. form dense and healthy‐looking carpets on this tailing dump. L. cruciata colonizing the tailing dump was compared with a control population growing in a pristine environment in terms of: (i) pollutant content, (ii) photochemical efficiency, and (iii) volatile secondary metabolites in thalli extracts. L. cruciata maintained optimal photosynthesis despite containing considerable amounts of soil pollutants in its thalli and had higher sesquiterpene content compared to control plants. Sesquiterpenes have a role in plant stress resistance and adaptation to adverse environments. Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) attract attention due to their safety and high specific capacity. However, their practical applications are constrained by Zn anode corrosion, dendritic growth, and poor temperature adaptability induced by a strong hydrogen‐bond network in aqueous electrolytes. Herein, a universal strategy to design strong solvating electrolytes is proposed, in which the hydrogen‐bond network and solvation structures are reconstructed by regulating the dipolar‐dipolar and ion‐dipolar interactions simultaneously. Consequently, the hydrogen‐bond network in free water is largely weakened, and the water content in the Zn2+ solvated sheath is reduced, while the hydrogen‐bond network between solvents is strengthened, which effectively broadens the operating temperature range and suppresses Zn dendrites and corrosion. As a result, Zn anodes exhibit excellent platting/stripping efficiency with an average Coulombic Efficiency up to 99.89% after 2000 cycles at 0.5 mA cm−2, impressive cycling stability (5000 h, 0.5 mA cm−2/0.5 mA h cm−2), and a wide operating temperature range of 140 °C (−50–90 °C). Moreover, the Zn//V2O3 full cells also display enhanced temperature‐resistance, implying that the designed strong solvation electrolyte has practical application potential in extreme environments. Aramid nanofibers (ANFs) exhibit desirable lightweight and excellent properties, while their strength has to be sacrificed to further improve their electrical insulation and fire resistance so as to meet the special demands of extreme environments. Herein, Zylon nanofibers (ZNFs) with analogous structure compatibility but superior performance are employed to construct an assembled dual‐network structure to improve the overall properties of ANFs. A facile in situ structure restoration (ISSR) strategy is proposed to achieve ZNF aqueous dispersion for the first time by deprotonation of ZNFs, which significantly avoids the corrosive acid system and facilitates the papermaking process. The composite ANF@ZNF nanopaper exhibits incredible tensile strength (233 MPa) and toughness (14.7 MJ m−3), increased by 108% and 584% compared with pure ANF nanopaper due to the dense entangled dual‐network and tremendous hydrogen bonds. Moreover, it presents superior breakdown strength of ≈128 kV mm−1, which is 6 times higher than that of commercial Nomex T410 insulation paper with a thickness of 50 µm. Besides, it exhibits surprising flame resistance (endure 1000 °C burning) ascribed to the excellent thermostability of ZNFs. This work provides promising possibilities for expanding the applications of aramid‐based composites for advanced electrical insulation and thermal protection in extremely harsh conditions. Extreme precipitation events in small alpine catchments trigger hazardous hydro‐geomorphic processes that cause considerable damage to settlements and infrastructure. In summer 2011 and 2017, two flood events mobilizing large amounts of sediments struck the town of Oberwölz (Styria, Austria) located at the outlet of the Schöttlbach catchment. We used data from local weather stations and precipitation radar to analyse the meteorological settings that caused the flooding. We compiled a consistent sediment budget for the 2017 event by combining geomorphic mapping, connectivity analysis, high‐resolution airborne LiDAR (ALS) and uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV)‐borne LiDAR (ULS), data from other authors for the 2011 event and external information (e.g., event analysis and excavation data). The 2017 event mobilized higher sediment volumes than the 2011 event (131 000 m3 vs 90 000 m3) even though 24‐h precipitation and peak discharges were lower in 2017. First assumptions that the larger sediment output was caused by the reworking of the 2011 flood deposits proved to be incorrect. The impacts of the 2011 event affected the resilience of the geomorphic system resulting in a significantly higher hillslope sediment supply. Elucidating the mechanism of soil erosion caused by extreme rainstorms could improve agroecosystems' resilience to the extreme climate. However, less attention has been paid to the regional difference of soil erosion during extreme rainstorms through multiple field investigations. Using six field surveys of extreme rainstorms, soil erosion and its driving mechanism were investigated on farmland in the Loess area and the Rocky mountain area. Conclusions are as follows: (1) Farmland was severely eroded in comparison with abandoned land and forest–grass land. The erosion modulus of farmland in the Loess area (51 606.51 t/km2) was greater than that in the Rocky mountain area (2582.75 t/km2). (2) In both the Loess area and the Rocky mountain area, the main erosion types on sloped cropland and terraced land were rills/gullies and embankment failure, respectively. Terracing is an appropriate measure that can effectively control farmland erosion in rainstorm events. (3) Concentrated flow is a major driver of soil erosion, with nearly all rills/gullies occurring in the flow paths. Drainage measures can prevent the formation of concentrated flow, weakening rills/gullies erosion in farmland. (4) Building bio‐embankment, planting high‐coverage crops, and implementing local protection measures could reduce the farmland erosion influenced by extremely heavy rainfall. Combining drainage and agronomic measures is the common strategy to combat extreme rainstorm events for reducing farmland erosion in the two regions. In this study, the Extreme Hourly Precipitation Areas (EHPAs) of three extreme levels (i.e., between the 95th and 99th percentiles, between the 99th and 99.9th percentiles, beyond the 99.9th percentile) in the Pearl River Delta over South China are identified; then the related events and associated Convective Cores (CCs) are tracked, and their macro‐and‐microphysical characteristics are analyzed using multi‐year dual‐polarization radar observations. Results show that >90% of EHPAs are smaller than 10 km2, and 65%–75% of EHPA events last only one hour. They tend to be more localized and persist longer with increasing hourly‐precipitation extremity. The EHPAs overlap with the CCs during 50%–64% of the EHPAs' life span. Their occurrence frequencies are nearly quadrupled after the monsoon onset over South China Sea (SCS), with a major (secondary) peak at about 1400 LST (0600 LST) in the diurnal variations. The CCs are non‐linear shaped with about 65% being meso‐γ‐scale and embedded within mostly meso‐β or α‐scale 20 dBZ regions. The CCs generally contain active warm‐rain processes and about 70% possess moderate‐to‐intense mixed‐phase microphysical processes. The ratios of ice water path to liquid water path are about 0.37, and coalescence dominates (about 68%) the liquid‐phase processes. The average size of raindrop is slightly larger than the "maritime‐like" regime and the average concentration is much higher than the "continental‐like" regime. These CCs' characteristics roughly resemble those of the convection producing extreme instantaneous precipitation, except for a larger horizontal scale and less evident variations with the increasing hourly‐precipitation extremity. Plain Language Summary: Extreme precipitation is of global concern, but macro‐ and microphysical characteristics of its associated convection remain elusive. Recent studies have analyzed the characteristics of convection producing extreme instantaneous precipitation in a monsoon coastal region of South China. We would like to know the characteristics of extreme hourly precipitation, which is potentially more disastrous, and how they vary with increasing extremity. For this purpose, we use 5‐year dual‐polarization radar observations combined with distrometer observations over the region to compare among three different extreme levels, and with those of extreme instantaneous precipitation. Results show that the extreme hourly precipitation mostly covers a small area, lasts only 1 hour, and overlaps with strong echoes during more than half of its life span. After the onset of summer monsoon over the South China Sea, the extreme hourly precipitation occurs much more frequently with a bimodal feature in the diurnal variation of occurrence frequency, consistent with those of extreme instantaneous precipitation. The microphysical characteristics of convection overlapping with the extreme hourly precipitation area resemble those of the extreme instantaneous precipitation‐producing convection. However, the former vary less evidently with the increasing hourly precipitation extremity likely due to smaller variations in probability distribution of convective intensity. High‐temperature dielectric polymers are in high demand for powering applications in extreme environments. Here, we have developed high‐temperature homopolymer dielectrics with anisotropy by leveraging the hierarchical structure in semicrystalline polymers. The lamellae have been aligned parallel to the surface in the dielectric films. This structural arrangement resembles the horizontal alignment of nanosheet fillers in polymer nanocomposites and nanosheet‐like lamellae in block copolymers, which has been proven to provide the optimal topological structure for electrical energy storage. The unique ordering of lamellae in our dielectric films endue a significantly increased breakdown strength and a reduced leakage current compared to amorphous films. This novel approach of enhancing the capacitive energy storage properties by controlled orientation of lamellae in homopolymer offers a new perspective for the design of high‐temperature polymer dielectrics. Tuning the electrocatalytic selectivity and long‐term stability for industrially significant, yet reactively unfavorable products, remains a challenge in oxygen reduction. Herein, the Au/TiO2 catalysts with strong metal–support interactions (SMSI) are designed and synthesized through an in situ auto‐reduction of Au‐modified Ti‐MOF. Highly dispersed ultra‐low loading of Au NPs strongly capsulated in porous TiO2 substrate, together with conductive carbon derivated from MOFs, enables Au/TiO2 electrocatalysts to achieve excellent H2O2 electrosynthesis through the two‐electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e ORR). Au(1.0)/TiO2 (0.52 wt% Au loading) exhibited a high selectivity of 90%, a remarkable Faradaic efficiency of 98%, and 72.2 mg L−1 h−1 H2O2 production. Highly dispersed Au NPs promote active site exposure, while the conductive carbon and the porous superstructure enhance mass diffusion. Notably, the SMSI between Au NPs and TiO2 substrate leads to superb stability (over 168 h) of the electrocatalysts, as it ensures continuous electronic interactions. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) simulations further revealed that the SMSI effect medicates the activation of the *OOH intermediate formation and the d‐band center, which are conductive to 2e ORR. Chlainomonas (Chlamydomonadales, Chlorophyta) is one of the four genera of snow algae known to produce annual pink or red blooms in alpine snow. No Chlainomonas species have been successfully cultured in the laboratory, but diverse cell types have been observed from many field‐collected samples, from multiple species. The diversity of morphologies suggests these algae have complex life cycles with changes in ploidy. Over 7 years (2017–2023), we observed seasonal blooms dominated by a Chlainomonas species from late spring through the summer months on a snow‐on‐lake habitat in an alpine basin in the North Cascade Mountains of Washington, USA. The Bagley Lake Chlainomonas is distinct from previously reported species based on morphology and sequence data. We observed a similar collection of cell types observed in other Chlainomonas species, with the addition of swarming biflagellate cells that emerged from sporangia. We present a life cycle hypothesis for this species that links cell morphologies observed in the field to seasonally available habitat. The progression of cell types suggests cells are undergoing both meiosis and fertilization in the life cycle. Since the life cycle is the most fundamental biological feature of an organism, with direct consequences for evolutionary processes, it is critical to understand how snow algal life cycles will influence their responses to changes in their habitat driven by climate warming. For microbial taxa that live in extreme environments and are difficult to culture, temporal field studies, such as we report here, may be key to creating testable hypotheses for life cycles. To successfully complete a Polar expedition individuals and teams must respond resiliently to the environmental, psychological, and social demands they face. In this study we examined profiles of resilient function in seven people from three expeditions in the High Arctic. Using a structured daily diary, participants reported on experiences of physical health (morning and evening), affect, team cohesion, performance, and potential explanatory factors including sleep, demand appraisals, events, and coping strategies. Notable intra‐ and inter‐individual variability was observed in daily reports and all profiles could be interpreted as representing resilient function. A number of significant relationships were found between markers of resilient physical and psychosocial function and potential explanatory variables. For example, there was much more daily variability in an individual's reporting of positive affect than prior research might imply, and what prior research designs could capture. Further, while negative affect tended to remain low and stable, our findings reveal that even minor and infrequent increases in negative emotions were significantly associated with other variables in the network. Finally, across the expedition period individual coping resources consistently exceeded demands, suggesting that individuals viewed the expedition as a challenge and not a threat. More broadly, these findings inform efforts to monitor, and maintain resilience when operating in Polar and other extreme settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microbial communities from extreme environments are largely understudied, but are essential as producers of metabolites, including enzymes, for industrial processes. As cultivation of most microorganisms remains a challenge, culture‐independent approaches for enzyme discovery in the form of metagenomics to analyse the genetic potential of a community are rapidly becoming the way forward. This study focused on analysing a metagenome from the cold and alkaline ikaite columns in Greenland, identifying 282 open reading frames (ORFs) that encoded putative carbohydrate‐modifying enzymes with potential applications in, for example detergents and other processes where activity at low temperature and high pH is desired. Seventeen selected ORFs, representing eight enzyme families were synthesized and expressed in two host organisms, Escherichia coli and Aliivibrio wodanis. Aliivibrio wodanis demonstrated expression of a more diverse range of enzyme classes compared to E. coli, emphasizing the importance of alternative expression systems for enzymes from extremophilic microorganisms. To demonstrate the validity of the screening strategy, we chose a recombinantly expressed cellulolytic enzyme from the metagenome for further characterization. The enzyme, Cel240, exhibited close to 40% of its relative activity at low temperatures (4°C) and demonstrated endoglucanase characteristics, with a preference for cellulose substrates. Despite low sequence similarity with known enzymes, computational analysis and structural modelling confirmed its cellulase‐family affiliation. Cel240 displayed activity at low temperatures and good stability at 25°C, activity at alkaline pH and increased activity in the presence of CaCl2, making it a promising candidate for detergent and washing industry applications. This study investigates the thermotolerant fungal biodiversity in caves and hot springs, focusing on their potential for extracellular enzyme production, specifically proteases. Samples were collected from the Cardonal region in Hidalgo, Mexico, using three different isolation methods. The study characterizes the morphological diversity of the isolated fungi and identifies various genera, including Aspergillus, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Cladosporium, and Fusarium, based on morphology. The isolated fungi were screened for their ability to produce extracellular enzymes on solid media, with a particular emphasis on proteases due to their industrial significance. Among the 35 isolated fungi, 20 exhibited proteolytic activity, and 12 strains were identified as good protease producers based on enzymatic index values. The study also evaluated the formation of fungal pellets by proteolytic fungi and found certain strains to display significant pellet formation. Additionally, protease production was examined by fungal pellets in submerged cultures, with isolate 6 demonstrating the highest protease activity. The findings highlight the diverse thermotolerant fungal biodiversity in extreme environments, and emphasize their potential for enzymatic production. This research contributes to our understanding of fungal ecology and provides insights into the biotechnological applications of these enzymes. A fundamental challenge in soil macroecology is to understand how microbial community structure shapes ecosystem function along environmental gradients of the land surface at broad spatial scales (i.e. the horizontal dimension). However, little is known about microbial community structure–function relationships in extreme environments along environmental gradients of soil depth at finer spatial scales (i.e. the vertical dimension). Here, we propose a general spatial dimension partitioning approach for assessing the patterns and drivers of soil microbial community structure–function relationships across horizontal and vertical spatial gradients simultaneously. We leveraged a 200‐km desert soil salinity gradient created by a 12‐year saline‐water irrigation in the Tarim basin of Taklamakan Desert. Specifically, using a general linear model, hierarchical variance partitioning, and a path model, we assessed the patterns and key ecological processes controlling spatial turnover in microbial community structure (i.e. β‐diversity) and enzymatic activity relevant to carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling along soil salinity gradients across study sites (horizontal dimension) and soil depths (vertical dimension). We found a decoupled relationship between soil microbial β‐diversity and enzymatic activity. Differences in soil depth (on the scale of meters) were as important as geographic distance (on the scale of kilometers) in shaping bacterial and fungal β‐diversity. However, the vertical and horizontal turnover in enzymatic activity was largely attributed to an increase in the heterogeneity of soil properties, such as soil texture, water content, and pH. Our findings suggest that dispersal limitation controls microbial community β‐diversity and that environmental heterogeneity, rather than soil salinization, controls enzymatic activity. Taken together, this work highlights that in the face of ongoing environmental alterations, soil depth is an under‐explored spatial dimension that must be considered in soil conservation efforts as a critical factor in determining microbial community structure and function in extreme environments. The implementation of strategies aimed at curtailing energy consumption and carbon emissions in buildings is of paramount importance. Priority should be accorded to the reduction of embodied carbon emissions from construction materials and operational carbon emissions during the usage phase. A public building situated in an extremely cold region is chosen as the subject of this study. An initial investigation is conducted into the impact of various enclosure structure materials on embodied carbon. The impact of different heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems on the total carbon emissions of public buildings are studied as well. The findings indicate that the amalgamation of W3 + R + G4 + H4 culminates in the least total carbon emissions. Upon establishing the foundational scheme for the public building, an optimization (nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II [NSGA II] and Criteria Importance Through Intercrieria Correlation [CRITIC]) of the enclosure structure parameters is initiated to examine the optimal parameters of the public building's enclosure structure. The findings reveal that a decrease in the heat transfer coefficient could trigger an increase in total carbon emissions. This is attributed to the fact that the carbon emissions embodied in the production process of these materials could potentially outweigh the reduction observed in operational carbon emissions. Further adjustments were also made to the parameters of the HVAC system in the buildings. The findings indicate that within the context of public buildings, given the presence of optimal parameters and an HVAC system that utilizes solar energy for both heating and cooling in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air‐Conditioning Engineers, Inc. 6 A climatic zone, the efficiency of the cooling system can exert a significant influence on the operations carbon emissions reduction. Hydrology plays a crucial role in understanding Earth's intricate water system and addressing water‐related problems, including against the backdrop of ongoing climate change. A retrospective review of the evolution of hydrology up to the current state of research is of great importance for understanding this role. While there have been some quantitative reviews of large numbers of hydrological publications, there still remains a lack of overarching hydrological research assessment, particularly with the focus on hydrological basins as fundamental spatial‐geographic units of hydrological analysis. Large language models, represented by OpenAI's ChatGPT, have demonstrated powerful textual understanding capabilities, making it possible to extract such overarching and basin information from hydrological publications. Here, we considered publications related to hydrology from Web of Science spanning January 1980 to October 2023, and parsed the information from this extensive body of literature by integrating a large language model and geocoding. These techniques enable quantitative analysis of research characteristics across different spatio‐temporal scales, focusing on hotspot topics, collaboration networks, and various basins worldwide. Our study revealed an increase in hydrological research since the 1990 s, with shifts in research priorities from groundwater and nutrients to climate change and ecohydrology. Some basins in North America and Europe have consistently been hotspots for hydrological research. Since the 2010s, there has been a noteworthy increase in interest toward basins in China and South Asia, but attention to many regions with frequent extreme rainfall remains insufficient. Geographical patterns show different preferred research topics for different basins, but climate change has emerged as the most prominent topic across all regions in the last decade. In conclusion, our study provides an effective approach to quantitative analysis of research trends, offering a fresh view on the evolution of hydrology as a research field, its focus on various hydrological basins around the world, and the emergence of overarching and basin‐specific hot topics over time. Family stress models have been used extensively in family science for decades and have demonstrated utility in the examination of familial responses to stressors. Although these models have been applied to research on Black families and researchers have more recently considered the impact of integrated sociocultural context and reconceptualized models accordingly, current models do not fully explain outcomes associated with mundane extreme environmental stress (MEES) and the simultaneous influence of an iterative meaning‐making process. To address this gap, we extend the contextual model of family stress, by integrating the MEES concept and propositions from symbolic interactionism, family systems theory, and ecological theory. We introduce the racial and ethnic discrimination stress model (RED‐SM), a conceptual framework, to explain how the mundane extreme environment, resources, and socialization messages contribute to a meaning‐making process that influences adjustment outcomes for Black individuals. Summary: The development of terrestrial ecosystems depends greatly on plant mutualists such as mycorrhizal fungi. The global retreat of glaciers exposes nutrient‐poor substrates in extreme environments and provides a unique opportunity to study early successions of mycorrhizal fungi by assessing their dynamics and drivers.We combined environmental DNA metabarcoding and measurements of local conditions to assess the succession of mycorrhizal communities during soil development in 46 glacier forelands around the globe, testing whether dynamics and drivers differ between mycorrhizal types.Mycorrhizal fungi colonized deglaciated areas very quickly (< 10 yr), with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi tending to become more diverse through time compared to ectomycorrhizal fungi. Both alpha‐ and beta‐diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were significantly related to time since glacier retreat and plant communities, while microclimate and primary productivity were more important for ectomycorrhizal fungi. The richness and composition of mycorrhizal communities were also significantly explained by soil chemistry, highlighting the importance of microhabitat for community dynamics.The acceleration of ice melt and the modifications of microclimate forecasted by climate change scenarios are expected to impact the diversity of mycorrhizal partners. These changes could alter the interactions underlying biotic colonization and belowground–aboveground linkages, with multifaceted impacts on soil development and associated ecological processes. As transparent, flexible, and wearable organic electronics degrade under normal outdoor environmental conditions (e.g., water vapor, oxygen, and UV light) and extreme environments, including washing or rain, a customized encapsulation technology is required to improve device reliability. Herein, a simple process is presented for fabricating multifunctional hazy substrates (MFHSs) with excellent gas diffusion barrier (GDB), flexibility, UV reflectance, light scattering, and waterproof properties. First, a spiky polyethylene terephthalate (PET) surface is produced with 76.0% optical haze through ion‐beam treatment followed by the formation of a hydrophobic layer to achieve a waterproof effect (contact angle: 153.3°). Then, a multifunctional multibarrier film is fabricated based on a nano‐laminated distributed Bragg reflector and functional polymer on the functional PET substrate to serve as a GDB and UV filter. This multibarrier film has excellent mechanical and chemical stabilities, in addition to having a water vapor transmission rate of 10−6 g m−2 day−1 and UV transmittance of <3%. The so‐fabricated MFHS not only increases the device efficiency by 73% but also enables a highly flexible and environmentally stable organic light–emitting diode. The surface treatment and encapsulation technologies developed in this study are expected to increase the lifetime of organic devices and facilitate high outdoor usability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polyploidy, resulting from whole‐genome duplication (WGD), is ubiquitous in nature and reportedly associated with extreme environments and biological invasions. However, WGD usually comes with great costs, raising questions about the establishment chance of newly formed polyploids. The surprisingly high number of polyploid and mixed‐ploidy species observed in nature may be a consequence of their continuous emergence or may reflect stable polyploid persistence and even coexistence with the ancestral ploidy under certain circumstances. However, empirical studies on contemporary polyploid establishment often neglect the cost–benefit balances of polyploid characteristics, tradeoffs between phenotypic characteristics, intercytotype interactions, recurrent polyploid formation, and stochastic processes. Here, we advocate for considering population‐level success, combining the aforementioned factors that affect polyploid establishment and long‐term coexistence with their ancestors. We approach the paradox of polyploid establishment despite high costs from a modern coexistence theory perspective and give an overview of the diversity of mechanisms and their timing that may potentially enable stable rather than transient persistence. A large stretch of the east coast of Australia experienced unprecedented rainfall and flooding over a two‐week period in early 2022. It is difficult to reliably estimate the likelihood of such a rare event from the relatively short observational record, so an alternative is to use data from an ensemble prediction system (e.g., a seasonal or decadal forecast system) to obtain a much larger sample of simulated weather events. This so‐called 'UNSEEN' method has been successfully applied in several scientific studies, but those studies typically rely on a single prediction system. In this study, we use data from the Decadal Climate Prediction Project to explore the model uncertainty associated with the UNSEEN method by assessing 10 different hindcast ensembles. Using the 15‐day rainfall total averaged over the river catchments impacted by the 2022 east coast event, we find that the models produce a wide range of likelihood estimates. Even after excluding a number of models that fail basic fidelity tests, estimates of the event return period ranged from 320 to 1814 years. The vast majority of models suggested the event is rarer than a standard extreme value assessment of the observational record (297 years). Polar regions are relatively isolated from human activity and thus could offer insight into anthropogenic and ecological drivers of the spread of antibiotic resistance. Plasmids are of particular interest in this context given the central role that they are thought to play in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, plasmidomes are challenging to profile in environmental samples. The objective of this study was to compare various aspects of the plasmidome associated with glacial ice and adjacent aquatic environments across the high Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, representing a gradient of anthropogenic inputs and specific treated and untreated wastewater outflows to the sea. We accessed plasmidomes by applying enrichment cultures, plasmid isolation and shotgun Illumina sequencing of environmental samples. We examined the abundance and diversity of ARGs and other stress‐response genes that might be co/cross‐selected or co‐transported in these environments, including biocide resistance genes (BRGs), metal resistance genes (MRGs), virulence genes (VGs) and integrons. We found striking differences between glacial ice and aquatic environments in terms of the ARGs carried by plasmids. We found a strong correlation between MRGs and ARGs in plasmids in the wastewaters and fjords. Alternatively, in glacial ice, VGs and BRGs genes were dominant, suggesting that glacial ice may be a repository of pathogenic strains. Moreover, ARGs were not found within the cassettes of integrons carried by the plasmids, which is suggestive of unique adaptive features of the microbial communities to their extreme environment. This study provides insight into the role of plasmids in facilitating bacterial adaptation to Arctic ecosystems as well as in shaping corresponding resistomes. Increasing human activity, warming of Arctic regions and associated increases in the meltwater run‐off from glaciers could contribute to the release and spread of plasmid‐related genes from Svalbard to the broader pool of ARGs in the Arctic Ocean. The diversity of flood‐generating mechanisms superimposed on catchment physiographic features with non‐stationary meteorological drivers makes future flood hazard assessment a grand challenge. To date, many studies have examined patterns in rainfall and streamflow, but far fewer have investigated trends in the other drivers of flooding. The complex transfer function between precipitation and flooding makes it potentially misleading to simply look at the change in rainfall to express the hazard. Furthermore, there are very few studies that have directly used output from km‐scale climate models in flood modeling. Coarse resolution climate data sets may not credibly resolve local climate and weather extremes. Changes in rainfall distribution and antecedent moisture over extended time periods due to climate change have so far been ignored when assessing urban pluvial flood risk. In this paper, an urban flood hazard assessment framework using the latest 2.2 km resolution UK Climate Projections Local is proposed. Global warming induced changes in pluvial flood risks under RCP8.5 are projected, focusing on the impact of changing precipitation patterns and soil moisture dynamics on flood generation. Results indicate a strong increase in the frequency of occurrence of extreme floods, and the resultant future (2060–2080) annual flood volume is expected to increase up to 52.6% relative to 1980–2000 over a major UK urban region, and these patterns are likely to hold more generally elsewhere in the UK. Shifts to a later occurrence of extreme flooding is identified under global warming. Previous studies that have neglected soil moisture dynamics are unlikely to give accurate flood estimates. Plain Language Summary: The future flood hazard status over the major UK urban region of Bristol (domain size ∼746 km2) is evaluated using the latest 12‐member UK Climate Projections Local ensemble rainfall data set at the hourly and kilometer scale. A total of 30,098 rainfall events from an equivalent 720 years of climate data are identified and used for flood modeling. Impact of changing precipitation pattern and soil moisture dynamics on surface water floods are evaluated, and the interaction between precipitation, inundation, infiltration, and soil wetness are handled simultaneously at a spatial resolution of ∼30 m or less using an improved hydrodynamic model (LISFLOOD‐FP). Our findings highlight a shift toward a later seasonal occurrence of extreme flooding under global warming. Specifically, a large proportion of future extreme flood hazards is projected to manifest in December, contrasting with historical trends where most extreme events occurred in November. Extreme precipitation can be magnified in rainy seasons due to amplified moisture convergence, while in dry periods limited moisture availability may offset precipitation increases. Despite an overall increase in the total annual rainfall volume, the future summer is anticipated to be much drier due to limited rainfall availability, leading to a further reduction in soil moisture availability. High‐performance UV photodetectors call for sensitive and energy‐efficient signal detection in extreme environments. To satisfy the requirement of a UV detection without an external power consumption, self‐powered UV photodetectors must be realized by an optimal combination of heterostructure with maximum built‐in potential using novel wide‐bandgap materials. Here, self‐powered UV photodiodes are designed via the band engineering of a wide‐bandgap Sr(Sn,Ni)O3/BaSnO3 heterojunction for the first time. Based on the theoretical concept of acceptor doping by Ni substitution in SrSnO3, remarkably, this heterojunction with a conduction band offset of 0.94 eV shows strong nonlinear electrical characteristics with extremely low Idark (≈100 fA) owing to the spatial gradient of the potential barrier across the interfaces, outstanding photo‐to‐dark current ratio (>107 at 25 °C and > 104 at 300 °C), and high stability under various extreme conditions upon UV illumination even without external bias (V = 0 V). This study suggests a novel strategy that utilizes band engineering to maximize sensitivity and minimize energy consumption in harsh environments for UV imaging using the newly discovered wide‐bandgap semiconductors. Extreme weather (high rainfall and temperatures) and challenging soils are sources of uncertainties in the use of current crop models that have been developed for more favorable environments. This may limit their applicability to guide and support decision making for the development of new agricultural regions in tropical environments. We evaluated the accuracy of the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM) framework in representing yield and development of a range of crops across multiple locations in the Northern Territory of Australia, a tropical region with large potential for agricultural development. Observations of yield, biomass, and phenology for a range of crops from 28 experiments undertaken at three locations were compiled and used to develop simulations undertaken using APSIM version 7.10. Model performance varied with coefficients of determination and concordance correlation coefficients ranging from 0.36 to 0.98 and 0.37 to 0.93, respectively. Instances where model performance was less than ideal were associated with conditions presenting a limited number of observed values. Deviations by the model from yield observations were larger for situations with high‐yielding crops and low daily maximum temperatures during vegetative growth stages. Deviations in phenology were larger for conditions associated with water and N stress. APSIM was capable of representing the yield, biomass, and development of cereal and pulse crops and can be used with confidence to assist the expansion of agriculture in tropical environments such as the Northern Territory of Australia. Extreme environmental conditions have profound impacts on shaping the evolutionary trajectory of organisms. Exposure to these conditions elicits stress responses, that can trigger phenotypic changes in novel directions. The Mexican Tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, is an excellent model for understanding evolutionary mechanisms in response to extreme or new environments. This fish species consists of two morphs; the classical surface‐dwelling fish and the blind cave‐dwellers that inhabit dark and biodiversity‐reduced ecosystems. In this review, we explore the specific stressors present in cave environments and examine the diverse adaptive strategies employed by cave populations to not only survive but thrive as successful colonizers. By analyzing the evolutionary responses of A. mexicanus, we gain valuable insights into the genetic, physiological, and behavioral adaptations that enable organisms to flourish under challenging environmental conditions.
