The International Journal of Dermatology has received over 2000 manuscripts in the first half of the year, and to manage this influx, they have introduced 18 Junior Editors who will work closely with the Section Editors to provide quality feedback to authors and improve turnaround times. The journal also aims to build a network among the Junior Editors and support their growth in the academic community. Additionally, the journal has introduced the DermReview Mentorship Program to expand their reviewer pool and provide training for less experienced reviewers. This article describes the outcomes of a survey of 93 editors in chief and associate editors of behavior‐analytic journals. We sought information about variables that influence their judgment of the selection of reviewers, selection of review panels, and quality of reviews. When selecting reviewers, participants rated highly expertise on the topic, history of conducting good reviews, and history of writing constructive and respectful reviews. When selecting review panels, participants rated highly stratifying reviewers based on their expertise, avoiding conflicts of interest, and the matching based on the area of expertise between reviewers and authors. When evaluating the quality of a review, participants rated highly considerations related to research design, the science underlying the main idea, and accurate interpretations of the data. Participants did not rate copyediting as important. Overall, the extent to which reviewer selection was influenced by membership in underrepresented groups varied. This study was guided by previous research highlighting the significance of journal publishers' commercial or non‐profit orientations in shaping academic editors' perspectives regarding the necessity of enhancing editorial and business practices. There is limited understanding of how the editor–publisher relationship varies based on publishers' commercial orientation. This study revealed five key factors influencing editors' attitudes towards how publishers strive to provide high‐quality publications: (i) availability of high‐quality publication services; (ii) sufficient technological support and access to visibility‐related data; (iii) accessible marketing and indexing services; (iv) access to continuous education for the editorial team; and (v) a balance between editorial autonomy and publisher support in managing the journal. The study indicated that editors partnering with commercial publishers tended to receive more extensive and advanced services, better technological support, and more training opportunities, contributing to the production of superior end products. However, working with commercial publishers resulted in the trade‐off of less editorial independence, which sometimes compromised editors' decision‐making ability and made them feel uncertain about their further involvement. The study's findings highlighted the importance of publishers adopting a more strategic approach to support their editorial staff, while considering the unique needs of each journal. An interview with Matthew Mitchell, "Buddhism" editor, is presented. Topics discussed include how he ended up being a professor of religious studies, five books have shaped hisr approach to the study of religion, and three books that he read recently that were not directly related to the study of religion.

Key points: Editors of 10 North American Family Medicine journals simultaneously published a Joint Call for Action to address systemic racism and encourage diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility/antiracism (DEIA) initiatives in medicine and medical publishing in January 2021.The efforts of the journals since publication of the joint editorial are summarized and include working to diversify editorial teams, editorial boards and authors; enhanced content about DEIA topics; mentoring of authors who are underrepresented in medicine (URM); and presenting content related to DEIA in Family Medicine publishing at national meetings.Editors had a follow up meeting in November 2022 to continue working toward a common goal of reducing racism and increasing DEIA initiatives in Family Medicine publications. Purpose: While nurse editors carry great responsibility for the scientific literature in the nursing profession, little has been published about this unique role. The purpose of this study was to examine contemporary nurse editors' roles and practices. Design: In early 2019, a sample of 129 nurse editors participated in a cross‐sectional study using survey methods. Methods: The online survey was based on an instrument used in a prior study and included 43 primarily multiple‐choice questions. Findings were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings: Beyond the expected roles of journal management, editorial decision making, leadership for the profession, and specific journal focus, some aspects of the nurse editor role have remained unchanged. The role continues to be learned mostly on the job and nurse editors still find satisfaction in helping other nurses publish and disseminate their work. Nurse editors are older and better educated. They also are receiving more manuscripts submitted to their journals and perceive this role as hard work but worth it. This is also the first study to report on the role of other levels of editors. Conclusion: This study provides a description of the current roles and practices of nurse editors. Nurse editors can bring more attention to the role and encourage more nurses to consider this role as an attainable and a satisfying one. Clinical relevance: Being a nurse editor is a leadership role and one that many nurses may not consider as a career goal. Journal editors are the main gatekeepers in scientific publishing. Yet there is a concern that they may receive preferential treatment when submitting manuscripts to their own journals. The prevalence of such self‐publishing is not known, nor the consequences for reliability and trustworthiness of published research. This study aimed to systematically review the literature on the prevalence of editors publishing in their own journals and to conduct a normative ethical analysis of this practice. A systematic review was performed using the following databases: Medline, PsycInfo, Scopus and Web of Science. Articles that provided primary data about editors publishing in own journals were included. We identified 15 studies meeting inclusion criteria. There was large variability of self‐publishing across fields, journals and editors, ranging from those who never published in their own journal to those publishing extensively in their own journal. Many studies suffered from serious methodological limitations. Nevertheless, our results show that there are settings where levels of self‐publication are very high. We recommend that editors‐in‐chief and associate editors who have considerable power in journals refrain from publishing research articles in their own journals. The article presents the discussion on new editorial team at Arizona State University from outgoing editors-in-chief Lesley Bartlett and Stacey J. Lee. Topics include supporting the efforts in bringing AEQ to Arizona State hosted during Teresa McCarty's editorship with K. Tsianina Lomawaima; and research promoting educational justice in historically marginalized communities.

A list of manuscript reviewers involved in the journal in 2023 who made contributions to the editorial work is presented, including Annatina Aerne, Alexander Geisler and Roula Nezi.

The author reflects on his 10 years in his role as editor for the journal. He looks back at the journal's history of publishing research of relevance to the dietetics community in the United Kingdom (UK) and discusses the impact of changes to publishing practices on how the journal operates including digital publishing, the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and open access movement. Achievements of the journal during his tenure include increased volume of publications and citations.
