Aims: To conduct a meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effect of glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonists (GLP‐1RAs) on glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) metrics as an adjunct to insulin therapy in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted through Medline (via PubMed), Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar up to 27 May 2024. Dual‐independent study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed. Results were summarized using random‐effects meta‐analysis. Results: Six RCTs were identified, involving a total of 378 individuals with T1D. The use of GLP‐1RAs in addition to standard insulin therapy was associated with a significant reduction in HbA1c (mean difference [MD] −0.21%, 95% confidence interval [CI] −0.36 to −0.06; p = 0.007) and a similar time in range (TIR) compared to placebo (MD −0.22%, 95% CI −2.39 to 1.95; p = 0.84). GLP‐1RA therapy resulted in a significantly higher time below range (MD 1.13%, 95% CI 0.50 to 1.76; p < 0.001) and a lower time above range compared with placebo (MD −1.83%, 95% CI −2.51 to −1.15; p < 0.001). Nonsignificant differences were noted for the secondary outcomes, including the mean amplitude of glucose excursion, continuous overall net glycaemic action for 60 min, mean daily glucose, coefficient of variation, and mean standard deviation of weekly glucose levels. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that, in individuals with T1D, add‐on therapy with GLP‐1RAs does not confer significant benefits in terms of CGM metrics and is associated with a longer time below the target glycaemic range. ABSTRACT Sensation seeking is a significant predictor of alcohol‐related consequences among high school students. High school seniors report the highest prevalence rates of alcohol use and binge drinking among students in high school. Among high sensation‐seeking students, higher rates of Protective Behavioral Strategies (PBS) use are associated with fewer alcohol‐related consequences. To date, however, there is no research investigating which specific PBS are related to lower levels of alcohol‐related consequences in this high‐risk group of students. The current study examined the frequency of use and effectiveness of 20 PBS measured by the PBS Scale‐20 among high sensation‐seeking high school seniors (N = 77). “Go‐zone” methodology was used to classify PBS items into one of four zones (i.e., used frequently, high effectiveness; used infrequently, high effectiveness; used frequently, low effectiveness; used infrequently; low effectiveness). Four PBS were identified as “go‐zone” strategies (e.g., used frequently; high effectiveness) and five strategies were identified as used infrequently but highly effective. Findings from the current study extend the literature on PBS use as a buffer against alcohol‐related consequences among high sensation‐seeking high school students. Skin tissue holds a prominent role in microcirculatory research as an easily accessible vascular bed for the noninvasive evaluation of microvascular function. Skin microvascular changes have been associated to alterations in distinct target organs and vascular beds, reinforcing the hypothesis that skin microcirculation can be used as a model of generalized microvascular function. In addition, skin microvascular dysfunction has been documented in cardiovascular disease and patients of increased cardiovascular risk where it has been associated with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, rendering it a candidate surrogate marker of vascular damage. Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) is a noninvasive, dynamic laser technique that allows assessment of skin microvascular function (SMF) by obtaining two‐dimensional maps of the skin perfusion in real time with high spatial and temporal resolution and, most importantly, with the highest reproducibility compared to other laser methods. An ever‐increasing number of studies using LSCI is confirming evidence of impaired SMF in several cardiovascular risk groups, therefore expanding its application in microvascular research and showing its potential clinical utility. This review attempts to present the growing importance of SMF in cardiovascular research and the emergence of LSCI technique as a robust imaging modality with a promising role to explore skin microvascular physiology. After a short description of the relevant technique and its main principle of function, we have also opted to present the most up to date studies using LSCI for the investigation of SMF in patients with cardiovascular disease as well as various groups of increased cardiovascular risk. Suicide is a significant public health concern school‐aged youth. Although a growing body of literature has documented the association between cyberbullying and suicidal ideation, and the mediating effect of internalizing symptoms, there is no research to date examining the impact of witnessing cyberbullying and suicidal ideation. To address this gap, we conducted a cross‐sectional study with middle school students (N = 130). Students completed questionnaires assessing witnessing cyberbullying, witnessing school bullying, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. We used structural equation modeling to test a mediational model in which we hypothesized internalizing symptoms would mediate the unique relationship between witnessing cyberbullying and suicidal ideation (i.e., controlling for witnessing school bullying). Results supported the mediational model, indicating the frequency of witnessing cyberbullying was positively related to internalizing symptoms, which in turn were related to higher levels of suicidal ideation. Findings suggest the importance of providing programs to support middle school students who witness cyberbullying to reduce the mental health risks (i.e., internalizing symptoms and suicidal ideation) associated with being a cyberbullying bystander. Aims: The Iron Intravenous Therapy in Reducing the burden of Severe Arrhythmias in HFrEF (RESAFE‐HF) registry study aims to provide real‐word evidence on the impact of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) on the arrhythmic burden of patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), iron deficiency (ID), and implanted cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). Methods and results: The RESAFE‐HF (NCT04974021) study was designed as a prospective, single‐centre, and open‐label registry study with baseline, 3, 6, and 12 month visits. Adult patients with HFrEF and CIEDs scheduled to receive IV FCM as treatment for ID as part of clinical practice were eligible to participate. The primary endpoint is the composite iron‐related endpoint of haemoglobin ≥ 12 g/dL, ferritin ≥ 50 ng/L, and transferrin saturation > 20%. Secondary endpoints include unplanned HF‐related hospitalizations, ventricular tachyarrhythmias detected by CIEDs and Holter monitors, echocardiographic markers, functional status (VO2 max and 6 min walk test), blood biomarkers, and quality of life. In total, 106 patients with a median age of 72 years (14.4) were included. The majority were male (84.9%), whereas 92.5% of patients were categorized to New York Heart Association II/III. Patients' arrhythmic burden prior to FCM administration was significant—19 patients (17.9%) received appropriate CIED therapy for termination of ventricular tachyarrhythmia in the preceding 12 months, and 75.5% of patients have frequent, repetitive multiform premature ventricular contractions. Conclusions: The RESAFE‐HF trial is expected to provide evidence on the effect of treating ID with FCM in HFrEF based on real‐world data. Using a cross‐sectional design, we examined protective behavioral strategies (PBS) as a moderator of the relationship between sensation seeking and hazardous drinking and alcohol‐related consequences among high school seniors (N = 212). Hierarchical regression analyses indicated sensation seeking was a significant predictor of binge drinking (β = 0.65, p < 0.001), prepartying (β = 0.71, p < 0.001), gaming (β = 0.75, p < 0.001), and alcohol‐related consequences (β = 0.69, p < 0.001). Further, PBS moderated these relationships such that among high sensation seeking adolescents, PBS use was associated with better outcomes, including lower levels of binge drinking (β = −0.37, p < 0.01), prepartying (β = −0.44, p < 0.01), gaming (β = −0.31, p < 0.05), and alcohol‐related consequences (β = −0.53, p < 0.001). Of course, continuation or not of SGLT-2 inhibitors among patients with documented infection should always be made upon the treating physician's clinical discretion. Cyberbullying is a significant problem among school‐aged youth. Although a growing body of literature has documented the association between cyberbullying victimization and mental health risks, there is limited research examining the impact of witnessing cyberbullying, particularly among elementary school students. To address this gap, we conducted a cross‐sectional study with elementary school students (N = 122). Students completed questionnaires assessing witnessing cyberbullying, witnessing school bullying, bullying victimization, depressive symptoms, and social anxiety. Regression analyses revealed that witnessing cyberbullying was positively associated with depressive symptoms (β = 0.25, p < 0.04) and social anxiety (β = 0.30, p < 0.01), even after controlling for frequency of witnessing school bullying and bullying victimization. Further, the moderating effect of witnessing school bullying was significant for depressive symptoms (β = −0.44, p < 0.001) and social anxiety (β = −0.31, p < 0.01), such that students who witnessed cyberbullying only reported the highest level of depressive symptoms and social anxiety. The moderating effect of bullying victimization was not significant. Findings suggest the importance of providing programs to support elementary school students who witness cyberbullying to reduce the mental health risks associated with being a cyberbullying bystander. Objective: Endothelial dysfunction has been associated with increased cardiovascular events and overall mortality. Microvascular damage is prevalent both in diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our aim was to compare microcirculatory function parameters in diabetic and non‐diabetic CKD patients via nailfold video‐capillaroscopy. Methods: We included 48 diabetic and 48 non‐diabetic adult CKD patients. All participants underwent nailfold video‐capillaroscopy, during which capillary density was measured at normal conditions (baseline), after a 4‐minute arterial occlusion (postocclusive reactive hyperemia), and at the end of a 2‐minute venous occlusion (congestion phase). Results: Diabetic patients presented significantly lower capillary density during reactive hyperemia (36.3 ± 3.8 vs 38.3 ± 4.3 capillaries/mm2, P =.022) and at venous congestion (37.8 ± 4.0 vs 39.8 ± 4.2 capillaries/mm2, P =.015). When stratified according to CKD stages, only in stage 3b capillary density was significantly lower in diabetic compared to non‐diabetic subjects at baseline, during postocclusive hyperemia (36.8 ± 2.7 vs 40.0 ± 4.3 capillaries/mm2, P =.037) and venous congestion (38.3 ± 2.8 vs 41.5 ± 3.5 capillaries/mm2, P =.022). Conclusions: Capillary density during postocclusive hyperemia and after venous congestion is lower in diabetic compared to non‐diabetic CKD patients, a finding indicative that diabetes is an additional factor contributing to microcirculatory structural and functional impairment in CKD. Increased arterial stiffness is independently associated with renal function decline in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Whether DM has additional deleterious effects on central hemodynamics and arterial stiffness in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients is yet unknown. This study aimed to compare ambulatory central BP, arterial stiffness parameters, and trajectories between patients with diabetic and non‐diabetic CKD. This study examined 48 diabetic and 48 non‐diabetic adult patients (>18 years) with CKD (eGFR: <90 and ≥15 ml/min/1.73 m2), matched in a 1:1 ratio for age, sex, and eGFR within CKD stages (2, 3a, 3b and 4). All patients underwent 24‐h ABPM with the Mobil‐O‐Graph device. Parameters of central hemodynamics [central systolic (cSBP) and diastolic blood pressure (cDBP), pulse pressure (PP)], wave reflection [augmentation index (AIx), and pressure (AP)] and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were estimated from the 24‐h recordings. Diabetic CKD patients had higher 24‐h cSBP (118.57 ± 10.05 vs. 111.59 ± 9.46, P =.001) and 24‐h cPP (41.48 ± 6.80 vs. 35.25 ± 6.98, P <.001) but similar 24‐h cDBP (77.09 ± 8.14 vs. 76.34 ± 6.75 mmHg, P =.625) levels compared to patients with non‐diabetic CKD. During day‐ and nighttime periods, cSBP and cPP levels were higher in diabetics compared to non‐diabetics. 24‐h PWV (10.10 ± 1.62 vs. 9.61 ± 1.80 m/s, P =.165) was numerically higher in patients with DM, but no between‐group differences were noted in augmentation pressure and index. In multivariate analysis, DM, female gender, and peripheral SBP were independently associated with higher cPP levels. Patients with diabetic CKD have higher ambulatory cSBP and increased arterial stiffness, as indicated by higher ambulatory cPP. Despite the escalation of alcohol use through high school, the majority of research on school‐based alcohol interventions has been conducted with junior high students or first and second‐year high school students. Preliminary research indicates a brief, web‐based personalized feedback intervention developed for college students (eCHECKUP TO GO) may be a promising program for high school seniors. Although these studies demonstrate positive intervention effects, there is some evidence for greater program efficacy for females in this age group. The current study investigates sex differences in program acceptability of the eCHECKUP TO GO and its relationship to short‐term alcohol outcomes among high school seniors (N = 135). Overall, the majority of students reported they found the program to be acceptable (i.e., user‐friendly and useful). However, contrary to our hypothesis, results indicated that male students reported significantly higher perceptions of program acceptability than females. Although we did not find sex differences in alcohol outcomes, program user‐friendliness was related to reductions in alcohol use for males. The results of this study add to the literature supporting the eCHECKUP TO GO for high school seniors and highlight the importance of program user‐friendliness for males. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) constitutes a global pandemic, representing the 7th cause of death worldwide. Morbidity and mortality of patients with T2DM are gradually increasing, while prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among these patients is almost 14% greater compared to the general population. Arterial stiffness is nowadays a valuable biomarker of CVD and a promising treatment target in specific patient groups, including those suffering from T2DM. Despite that fact, design of the available studies cannot prove causal relationship. Recently, a new antidiabetic drug class, namely sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors, has attracted scientific interest, due to their multiple, beneficial, pleiotropic effects, especially those focused on CVD. There is limited relevant literature concerning the effects of SGLT-2 inhibitors on arterial stiffness, while retrieved results might be considered as conflicting. The aim of the present review article is to summarize acquired knowledge regarding the prognostic role of arterial stiffness in T2DM, along with the presentation of retrieved data on the potential role of SGLT-2 inhibitors. Despite the availability of a numerous antihypertensive agents, hypertension treatment and control rates remain low in many countries. The role of the sympathetic nervous system has long been recognized, but recent sham control renal denervation studies demonstrated conflicting results. In this reviewe paper, the authors performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine outcomes of sham-controlled studies utilizing new technologies and procedures. Six published randomized, sham-controlled studies were included in this meta-analysis. Of those, three trials used the first-generation radiofrequency renal denervation device and technique and the other three used second-generation devices and techniques. In total, 981 patients with hypertension were randomized in all 6 trials to undergo renal denervation (n = 585) or sham procedure (n = 396). Overall, renal denervation resulted in a decrease of 24-hours systolic ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) by 3.62 mm Hg (95% CI: -5.28--1.96; I2  = 0%), compared to sham procedure (GRADE: low). Renal denervation also reduced daytime systolic ABP by 5.51 mm Hg (95% CI: -7.79--3.23; I2  = 0%), compared to sham procedure but not nighttime systolic ABP. Office systolic blood pressure was reduced by 5.47 mm Hg (95% CI -8.10--2.84; I2  = 0%), compared to sham control. Further analysis demonstrated that second-generation devices were effective in reducing blood pressure, whereas the first-generation devices were not. These results indicate that effective renal denervation can result in significant and clinically meaningful blood pressure reduction. Arterial hypertension is a well-established cardiovascular risk factor, and blood pressure (BP) control has largely improved the prognosis of hypertensive patients. A number of studies have assessed the role of BP levels in the prognosis of patients with acute coronary syndromes. Pathophysiologic links of hypertension to acute myocardial infarction (MI) include endothelial dysfunction, autonomic nervous system dysregulation, impaired vasoreactivity, and a genetic substrate. A history of hypertension is highly prevalent among patients presenting with MI, and some, but not all, studies have associated it with a worse prognosis. Some data support that low levels of admission and in-hospital BP may indicate an increased risk for subsequent events. Risk scores used in patients with MI have, therefore, included BP levels and a history of hypertension in their variables. Of note, good long-term BP control, ideally initiated prior to discharge, should be pursued in order to improve secondary prevention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors evaluated the impact of a brief bullying bystander intervention (STAC) on depressive symptoms among high school students using a randomized controlled design. Results of path analyses provided support for a mediational model in which the intervention was associated with an increase in sense of school belonging, which in turn was associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms. Although school‐based programs are effective at decreasing bullying, the majority of studies have been conducted with elementary and middle school students. We conducted a pilot study using a randomized controlled design investigating the social validity of a brief, bullying bystander program adapted to be age‐appropriate for high school students (N = 65). Results indicated that high school students in the intervention group perceived the program to be acceptable and relevant and reported greater increases in knowledge (ηp2 = 0.27) and confidence to intervene (ηp2 = 0.27) in bullying situations compared to students in the control group. Despite being trained in the use of four intervention strategies, students reported using two of the strategies infrequently. Additionally, we found a significant difference between the intervention and control group for only one strategy (Φ = −0.44). Orthostatic hypertension (OHT), that is, sustained increase in blood pressure after standing, is an increasingly recognized cardiovascular disorder having been examined in much fewer studies compared with orthostatic hypotension (OH). However, in both OHT and OH, dysfunction of the autonomous nervous system is considered to be the primary pathophysiological disturbance, while significant associations with essential hypertension have been observed. Although in many studies OHT has been related to subclinical or clinical target organ damage, there is also evidence denying such an association. Because OHT is defined variably across different studies, the comparison of relevant outcomes is at least problematic. Since evidence about OHT treatment is exclusively based on limited non-randomized studies, no specific recommendations have been developed. Therefore, both the prognostic role and the clinical significance of OHT remain largely undefined. The aim of the present review is to summarize the available evidence regarding the definition, diagnosis, pathophysiology, prognostic role and treatment of OHT and highlight potential clinical implications of this underestimated condition. Cluster root (CR) is one of the most spectacular plant developmental adaptations to hostile environment. It can be found in a few species from a dozen botanical families, including white lupin (Lupinus albus) in the Fabaceae family. These amazing structures are produced in phosphate‐deprived conditions and are made of hundreds of short roots also known as rootlets. White lupin is the only crop bearing CRs and is considered as the model species for CR studies. However, little information is available on CRs atypical development, including the molecular events that trigger their formation. To provide insights on CR formation, we performed an anatomical and cellular description of rootlet development in white lupin. Starting with a classic histological approach, we described rootlet primordium development and defined eight developmental stages from rootlet initiation to their emergence. Due to the major role of hormones in the developmental program of root system, we next focussed on auxin‐related mechanisms. We observed the establishment of an auxin maximum through rootlet development in transgenic roots expressing the DR5:GUS auxin reporter. Expression analysis of the main auxin‐related genes [TIR, Auxin Response Factor (ARF) and AUX/IAA] during a detailed time course revealed specific expression associated with the formation of the rootlet primordium. We showed that L. albusTRANSPORT INHIBITOR RESPONSE 1b is expressed during rootlet primordium formation and that L. albusAUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 5 is expressed in the vasculature but absent in the primordium itself. Primary aldosteronism (PA) is a common form of secondary hypertension. Several guidelines recommend that patients with adrenal incidentaloma have a high probability of suffering from PA. We conducted a prospective study of 269 consecutive adults with adrenal incidentaloma to investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of PA. In total, 9 participants were detected with PA, suggesting a prevalence of 3.35% among the study population. PA participants had a higher blood pressure level by 14/20.8 mm Hg and a lower serum potassium level by 0.8 mmol/L (P < .05). Importantly, all patients with PA presented with concurrent indications (hypertension with or without hypokalemia) for screening of the disease, but they have not undergone relative screening by the referring physician, thus casting doubts about the appropriate implementation of current guidelines in real-life practice. Intense efforts are needed to familiarize physicians with recommendations for PA to minimize undiagnosed cases and the detrimental sequelae of this endocrine form of hypertension. During conditions of increased postural instability, older adults exhibit greater lower limb muscle co-contraction. This response has been interpreted as a compensatory postural strategy, which may be used to increase proprioceptive information from muscle spindles or to stiffen the lower limb as a general response to minimise postural sway. The current study aimed to test these two hypotheses by investigating use of muscle co-contraction during sensory transitions that manipulated proprioceptive input. Surface EMG was recorded from the bilateral tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius medialis muscles, in young (aged 18-30) and older adults (aged 68-80) during blind-folded postural assessment. This commenced on a fixed platform (baseline: 2 min), followed by 3 min on a sway-referenced platform (adaptation) and a final 3 min on a fixed platform again (reintegration). Sensory reweighting was slower in older adults, as shown by a significantly larger and longer postural sway after-effect once a stable platform was restored. Muscle co-contraction showed similar after-effects, whereby older adults showed a larger increase in co-contraction once the stable platform had been restored, compared to young adults. This co-contraction after-effect did not return to baseline until after 1 min. Our evidence for high muscle co-contraction during the reintroduction of veridical proprioceptive input suggests that increased co-contraction in older adults is not dependent on contemporaneous proprioceptive input. Rather, it is more likely that co-contraction is a general postural strategy used to minimise postural sway, which is increased during this sensory transition. The phytohormone jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives, collectively referred to as jasmonates, regulate many developmental processes, but are also involved in the response to numerous abiotic/biotic stresses. Thus far, powerful reverse genetic strategies employing perception, signalling or biosynthesis mutants have broadly contributed to our understanding of the role of JA in the plant stress response and development, as has the chemical gain-of-function approach based on exogenous application of the hormone. However, there is currently no method that allows for tightly controlled JA production in planta. By investigating the control of the JA synthesis pathway in bacteria-infected cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants, we identified a transcription factor (TF), named GhERF-IIb3, which acts as a positive regulator of the JA pathway. Expression of this well-conserved TF in cotton leaves was sufficient to produce in situ JA accumulation at physiological concentrations associated with an enhanced cotton defence response to bacterial infection. This study evaluated the impact of service‐learning‐infused courses on multicultural competence and social justice advocacy skills among counseling students. The project, in which students acted as job coaches for refugee families, was integrated into 1st‐ and 2nd‐year counseling courses. Results indicated an increase in multicultural knowledge and advocacy skills, with greater changes reported among 1st‐year students. Implications for counselor training, including placement of service‐learning projects within the counseling curriculum, are discussed. Dependent offspring influence allocation of parental investment using specialized traits thought to contain information about offspring condition. To test this hypothesis, we examined the relationship between one component of avian begging, the phenotype of the nestling mouth, and the density of a haematophagous mite, Pellonyssus reedi, in nestling House Sparrows Passer domesticus. Ectoparasite density in broods was negatively associated with average nestling mass and flange colour intensity and positively associated with mouth width, but was not related to the intensity of blood-based gape coloration or flange width. These results support the hypothesis that components of offspring solicitations signal high quality, and highlight the diverse selective pressures shaping offspring–parent communication. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors have been acknowledged as major contributors to sexual dysfunction in the general population. The purpose of this study was to explore their impact on sexual function in rheumatologic patients. A total of 557 consecutive rheumatologic patients, 449 females and 108 males, had their sexual function evaluated with the Female Sexual Functioning Index ( FSFI) and the International Index of Erectile Function ( IIEF) questionnaire respectively. Personal data regarding presence of cardiovascular risk factors were collected and analysed in association with the FSFI and IIEF scores. Mean age of the participants was 54.1 ± 14.1 years, mean body mass index was 27.5 ± 5.29 and mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure was 130.5 ± 19.82 and 79.5 ± 10.51 mmHg respectively. Hypertension was present in 39% of the participants, diabetes mellitus in 10.2%, dyslipidaemia in 33.6% and history of cardiovascular events in 8.6%, whereas smoking was recorded by 28.4% and alcohol consumption by 7.4%. Sexual dysfunction affected 68.6% of our study population (73.5% of females and 48.1% of males, p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that age was the only factor associated with a significantly higher prevalence of sexual dysfunction ( p < 0.001 for both genders, p = 0.013 in males and p < 0.001 in females). Increased age was identified as the only independent predictor of sexual dysfunction in our population. Apart from age, traditional cardiovascular risk factors failed to explain the increased prevalence of sexual dysfunction in these patients. This quantitative pilot study examined changes in counseling students'professional attitudes in 3 master's-level core courses. Results indicated significantly more change occurred during an ethics course than during the other courses. Changes occurred in attitudes consistent with humanistic philosophy, including self-awareness, professional impairment and self-care, healthy professional relationships, empathy, and multicultural awareness. After decades of suppression, fire is returning to forests of the western United States through wildfires and pre-scribed burns. These fires may aid restoration of vegetation structure and processes, which could improve conditions for wildlife species and reduce severe wildfire risk. Under-standing response of wildlife species to fires is essential to forest restoration because contemporary fires may not have the same effects as historical fires. Recent fires in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona pro-vided opportunity to investigate long-term effects of burn severity on habitat selection of a native wildlife species. We surveyed burned forest for squirrel feeding sign and related vegetation characteristics to frequency of feed-ing sign occurrence. We used radio-telemetry within fire-influenced forest to determine home ranges of Mexican fox squirrels, Sciurus nayaritensis chiricahuae, and compared vegetation characteristics within home ranges to random areas available to squirrels throughout burned conifer for-est. Squirrels fed in forest with open understory and closed canopy cover. Vegetation within home ranges was charac-terized by lower understory density, consistent with the effects of low-severity fire, and larger trees than random locations. Our results suggest that return of low-severity fire can help restore habitat for Mexican fox squirrels and other native wildlife species with similar habitat affiliations in forests with a historical regime of frequent, low-severity fire. Our study contributes to an understanding of the role and impact of fire in forest ecosystems and the implications for forest restoration as fire returns to the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs) usually extend to lymph nodes in the neck and mediastinum. Rarely, they invade the neighboring upper airway anatomical structures. We report a 56-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of upper airway obstruction. Imaging studies revealed a lesion derived fromthe thyroid which invaded and obstructed the trachea, which appeared to be a highly differentiated PTC. Total thyroidectomy was performed, with removal of the endotracheal part of themass along with the corresponding anterior tracheal rings. Two months later, a whole body I131 scan after recombinant human thyroid-stimulating hormone (rh-TSH) administration was performed and revealed a residual mass in upper left thyroid lobe. Subsequently, 150 mCi I131 were given following rh-TSH administration. Nine months later, there was no sign of residual tumor. This case is the first one reported in the literature regarding rh-TSH administration prior to RAI ablation in a PTC obstructing the trachea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
