This study is aimed at the in situ preparation and antibacterial study of silver nanoparticles within the matrix of an eco‐friendly, biocompatible, biodegradable, and bioavailable biopolymer (chitosan) to form Chi–AgNP film via multiple noncovalent interactions between the organic polymer and the nanoparticles. The film is fully characterized by infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The characterization confirms the successful incorporation of silver nanoparticles into the polymeric network. Infrared spectroscopy reveals peaks corresponding to the vibration of functional groups present in chitosan with enhanced intensity and blueshifts caused by the presence of silver nanoparticles. Well‐monodispersed spherical silver nanoparticles with an average size of 10 nm are observed in the Chi–AgNP film. The surface plasmon resonance at 447 nm is consistent with a typical silver plasmon. Furthermore, the antibacterial effects on E. coli and S. aureus were determined and attributed to the release of AgNPs observed by UV absorption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The photothermal conversion in plasmonic nanohelices is studied, unveiling how helical nanostructures made from metals with a notable interband activity ‐such as cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni)‐ exhibit a remarkable temperature rise ΔT up to ≈1000 K under illumination. Such outstanding ΔT values exclusively occur at wavelengths close to their localized plasmon resonances (ΔT is significantly lower off resonance), and therefore the photothermal conversion of these nanoparticles is spectrally selective. The exceptional and spectrally selective temperature rise is demonstrated at near infrared (NIR) wavelengths, which prompts the use of Co and Ni helical nanoparticles in a wide range of photothermal applications including solar energy conversion, seawater desalination, catalysis, or nanomedicine. This study focuses on better understanding how El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influences the occurrence of particularly dry conditions (warm temperature and dry precipitation anomalies) in northwestern Mexico during boreal spring (March–May), a season that is characterized by the driest regional conditions, and by a high socioeconomic sensitivity to the interannual variations in them. For that, surface observations (CRU TS4.05 and ERSSTv5) and low‐tropospheric circulation reanalysis (ERA5) were analysed using linear regressions, contingency tables, and composites over two periods, 1901–2020 and 1959–2020. The results confirm that the positive phase of ENSO (El Niño) tends to reduce the probabilities of a drier than normal spring and that its negative phase (La Niña) increases them, but suggest that such signal is relatively weak. In particular, the drying effects associated to La Niña are generally small, as they explain less than 10% of the interannual variability in precipitation, and most of the driest springs occurred during neutral years. The results also shed light into the causes of the driest springs: internal atmospheric variability. On average, during the driest springs, sea surface temperature anomalies are statistically non existent over the eastern Pacific, but these events are characterized by an expansion of the southeastern (SE) side of North Pacific Subtropical High (NPSH). It is found that during spring, a strengthened SE side of the NPSH weakens the moisture flux from the Pacific Ocean into northwestern Mexico. These results suggest that the seasonal predictability of spring for northwestern Mexico might not only depend on the strength and phase of ENSO but also on the processes controlling the variability of ridges over the extratropical eastern Pacific. Aim: Comparing genetic structure in species with shared spatial ranges and ecological niches can help identify how dissimilar aspects of biology can shape differences in population connectivity. Similarly, where species are widely distributed across heterogeneous environments and major topographic barriers, knowledge of the structuring of populations can help reveal the impacts of factors which limit dispersal and/or drive divergence, aiding conservation management. Location: European seas of the northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean. Taxa: European clawed lobster (Homarus gammarus) and European crawfish (Palinurus elephas), two sympatric, heavily fished decapods with extensive dispersal potential. Methods: By RAD‐sequencing 214 H. gammarus from 32 locations and 349 P. elephas from 15 locations, we isolated 6340 and 7681 SNP loci, respectively. Using these data to characterise contemporary population structuring, we investigate potential spatial and environmental drivers of genomic heterogeneity. Results: We found higher levels of differentiation among clawed lobsters than crawfish, both globally and within basins, and demonstrate where known hydrographic and topographic barriers generate shared patterns of divergence, such as a genetic break between the Atlantic and Mediterranean basins. Genetic structure not common to both species is principally apparent in the Atlantic portions of their range, where clawed lobster exhibits a genetic cline and increased differentiation towards range margins, while crawfish appear effectively panmictic throughout this region. Main Conclusions: We attribute the comparative lack of crawfish population structuring to their greater dispersal tendencies via a longer pelagic larval duration and sporadic adult movements. In contrast, genetic connectivity in clawed lobster is relatively restricted, with the correlation of site of origin and temperature to geographical heterogeneity at many divergent loci indicative of both neutral and adaptive processes. Our results help inform how contemporary management can account for likely demographic connectivity and marry the conservation of genomic variation with sustainable fisheries in these ecologically and economically important crustaceans. Hallux abducto valgus (HAV) is a common musculoskeletal disorder that has been addressed surgically. Nevertheless, the manual therapy approach may play an important role in the management of this condition. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of global postural reeducation (GPR) in subjects with symptomatic mild to moderate HAV in static postural control, dynamic stability, and ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (DFROM). A total of 80 patients with mild to moderate symptomatic HAV were allocated to the intervention group (GPR) or control group (CG) (no treatment) for 8 weeks. Outcome measures were assessed at baseline at 4 and 8 weeks including static postural control (Romberg test), dynamic balance (Star Excursion Balance Test [SEBT]), and ankle DFROM (Weight‐Bearing Lunge Test [WBLT]). No improvements were observed at 4 weeks, but there were improvements at 8 weeks in: static postural control mediolateral displacement (X) of center of pressure (CoP) in both eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC): XEO (t(36) = 2.892, p =.006, d = 0.67); XEC (t(68) = 2.280, p =.026, d = 054); and velocity (V) of CoP displacement: VEO (t(68) = 2.380, p =.020, d = 0.57); VEC (t(36) = 2.057, p =.047, d = 0.37). It were also improvements in: WBLT (t(36) = −2.869, p =.007, d = 0.54) and SEBT at three directions (anterior, ANT; posteromedial, PM; and posterolateral, PL): SEBT.ANT (t(36) = −2.292, p =.028, d = 0.23); SEBT.PM (t(36) = −4.075, p <.001, d = 0.43); SEBT.PL (t(62) = −3.506, p =.001, d = 0.34). Micelles made by connecting hydrophobic and hydrophilic chains via photo‐responsive ortho‐hydroxy cinnamate (oHC) units undergo complete degradation within 10 min under visible light irradiation at basic pH values. This proof of concept relies on the controlled cyclization of the oHC moiety affording the corresponding coumarin with the concomitant separation of the hydrophobic portion. Furthermore, the neat polymeric micelles are stable under daylight conditions, thus allowing its storage without special precautions at neutral pH. The amphiphilic nature of mPEG750‐oHC‐dodecyl, expressed as the ability to self‐assemble into micellar aggregates in aqueous media, was corroborated by the measurement of its critical micellar concentration (CMC) by fluorescence analysis, as well as the successful visualization of these aggregates using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, the size distribution and suspension stability of these aggregates obtained at different pH values was analyzed in terms of dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential measurements. The use of transition‐metal complexes as photocatalysts have allowed the performance of diverse organic transformations in an outstanding manner, characterized not only by high yields, TOF, and selectivity values, but also by modulating and providing access to novel molecular structures that, without them, would be difficult if not impossible. However, one of the biggest concerns regarding the use of these photocatalysts relies on the difficulties associated with their isolation from reaction media and reutilization once the chemical process ends. The above, besides contaminating reaction products and requiring out tedious purification processes, prompts the inevitable loss of the catalyst, directly affecting its recyclability. In addition, this situation results in negative outcomes from an economic and environmental perspective, since transition‐metal complexes are usually expensive materials, and their unsuccessful recovery could result in leakage into the environment. These drawbacks served as inspiration for the elaboration of the present review focused on the development of novel strategies developed during the last decade for the successful recovery of these species. The strategies summarized herein, whether for homogeneous or heterogeneous systems, are based on the use of thermotropic solvents, changes in the hydrophilic balance of the catalyst, the employment of polymers, copolymers, porous macromolecular structures, and inorganic nanostructures as support of these entities. Moreover, the use of organized and confining media, such as micelles and gels in this context, is also discussed. We hope that this review will motivate the search for new strategies to develop novel catalytic systems, understanding that high performance is based not only on yields but also on recyclability, sustainability, and responsibility to the environment. This work reports a simple and scalable strategy to prepare a series of thermoresponsive polyurethanes synthesized via copolymerization of dicyclohexyl diisocyanate with glycerol ethoxylate in a single one‐pot system. These polyurethanes exhibit lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) at 57 °C. The LCST of synthesized polyurethane was determined from Dynamic Scanning Calorimetry and UV‐vis measurements. Both the LCST and Tg of synthesized polyurethane was tuned by varying the ratio between hard segment (dicyclohexyl diisocyanate) and soft segment (glycerol ethoxylate). Thus, Tg values could be tuned from −54.6 °C to −19.9 °C for samples with different flexibility. The swelling and deswelling studies were done at room temperature and above the LCST respectively. The results showed that the swelling ratio increases with the increase of soft segment (glycerol ethoxylate) in synthesized polyurethanes. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the membrane were studied by universal tensile testing measurements. Specifically, stress at break values varied from 0.35±0.07 MPa to 0.91±0.15 MPa for the tested membranes, whereas elongation at break data ranged from 101.9±20.9 % to 192.4±24.4 %, and Young's modulus varied from 0.35±0.03 MPa to 1.85±0.19 MPa. Background: The Ramsay scale is the most widely used scale during pediatric procedures although it has not been formally validated. Objective: To validate the Ramsay scale during invasive procedures under sedation in pediatrics. Methods: A prospective analytic study was conducted in two hospitals. All patients ≥6 months that were undergoing invasive procedures under sedation were enrolled. All were recorded, and these videos were edited and randomized. 150 videos were scored by four observers (a pediatrician, a pediatric intensive care unit nurse, an anesthetist, and an operating room nurse). All videos were scored with the Ramsay scale and University of Michigan Sedation Scale. Observers were blinded to drug administration. Construct validity was measured through Wilcoxon test paired samples after administration of sedatives. Criterion validity, intra‐observer reliability, and interobserver correlation were evaluated by comparing the scores of the scales using Spearman's correlation coefficient. Interobserver agreement was measured using the intraclass correlation coefficient. To assess test‐retest reliability, 50 videos were randomly selected and reevaluated. Results: Sixty‐five patients were included. Construct validity was demonstrated through changes in the Ramsay scale scoring after administration of sedatives (p <.0001). Regarding criterion validity, the Ramsay scale had a high correlation with the UMSS (ρ = 0.621). Intra‐observer agreement was ρ = 0.884. The Ramsay scale showed interobserver reliability with an intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.94 when comparing it with the University of Michigan Sedation Scale. Internal consistency was α = 0.91. Regarding applicability, in our study, it was applied in two hospitals in different areas by four professionals from distinct categories. Conclusions: The Ramsay scale is valid, reliable, and applicable to monitoring sedation for invasive procedures under deep sedation in pediatrics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to quantify how much variability is affected by the diurnal cycle (DC), two variance‐partitioning schemes were applied on two rainfall datasets that cover the Intra Americas Seas (IAS) domain at a 3‐hourly resolution during 21 years. The datasets are the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) 3B42, and a simulation from the Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM) model. From TRMM, the results show that the variance attributable to the DC is large because it shapes the variability of transients. Such diurnal effects shape transients similarly during all seasons, but their effects produce different patterns over continental and oceanic regions. Over continental regions, the total variance attributable to the DC is much larger than that attributable to the mean seasonal cycle and to interannual variability. But over oceanic regions, the latter two types of partitions can be larger than that of the DC. Although the analysed model simulation captures the broad features of the observed variance partitions, it overestimates the importance of the typical diurnal march, it underestimates how the DC tends to suppresses transient variability during nighttime over land, and it underestimates how it tends to increase it otherwise. As shown by the results, the variance‐partitioning approach of this study might complement previous approaches because rather than focusing on diurnal amplitudes and phases, it focuses on diurnal effects. Therefore, this approach could be useful to diagnose DC‐related issues from a relatively new perspective, issues such as the evaluation of systematic errors, or the evaluation of how the DC affects transients under different large‐scale conditions or slow‐varying forcings. A new methodology for the pH‐triggered degradation of polymers or for the release of drugs under visible light irradiation based on the cyclization of ortho‐hydroxy‐cinnamates (oHC) to coumarins is described. The key oHC structural motif can be readily incorporated into the rational design of novel photocleavable polymers via click chemistry. This main‐chain moiety undergoes a fast photocleavage when irradiated with 455 nm light provided that a suitable base is added. A series of polyethylene glycol‐alt‐ortho‐hydroxy cinnamate (polyethylene glycol (PEG)n‐alt‐oHC)‐based polymers are synthesized and the time‐dependent visible‐light initiated cleavage of the photoactive monomer and polymer is investigated in solution by a variety of spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. The photo‐degradation behavior of the water‐soluble poly(PEG2000‐alt‐oHC) is investigated within a broad pH range (pH = 2.1–11.8), demonstrating fast degradation at pH 11.8, while the stability of the polymer is greatly enhanced at pH 2.1. Moreover, the neat polymer shows long‐term stability under daylight conditions, thus allowing its storage without special precautions. In addition, two water‐soluble PEG‐based drug‐carrier molecules (mPEG2000‐oHC‐benzhydrol/phenol) are synthesized and used for drug delivery studies, monitoring the process by UV–vis spectroscopy in an ON/OFF intermittent manner. Determining the drivers of key ecological processes of commercial marine species is important to acquire basic and essential knowledge for fisheries management and conservation. Here we report on a long‐term monitoring of the settlement of the European spiny lobster, Palinurus elephas, the most commercially important spiny lobster species in the Mediterranean and north‐eastern Atlantic. Densities of recently settled individuals (early benthic juveniles – EBJs) were recorded annually, as an approximation to annual settlement, from 2000 to 2016 (17 years) in three zones of the north‐western Mediterranean: Catalonia (CAT), the Columbretes Islands (COL), and the Balearic Islands (BAL). Settlement, the end point that integrate most of the variability occurred during dispersion, is a complex ecological process governed by the interaction of biotic and abiotic factors that can be in turn influenced by the atmospheric and oceanographic conditions. Using linear regression of the size structure of EBJs, we demonstrate that settlement occurs synchronously in the three study zones. Densities of EBJs were handled as time series, and regression analysis revealed that CAT and COL covaried significantly, but none of them with BAL. Therefore, CAT and COL were analysed together using generalized linear model and much of their joint variability was explained by the mesoscale oceanographic index IDEA. Settlement in BAL showed a different pattern, explained by the joint effect of the atmospheric oscillations NAO and WEMO. Complexity of P. elephas settlement cannot be fully accounted neither for CAT‐COL nor for BAL because settlement seems be driven by more complex unknown multi‐factorial processes. Therefore, further studies are necessary to gain insight into other factors that allow short‐ or medium‐term predictions of settlement. We describe the use of biopolymers, such as sodium alginate, as an sustainable adhesive binder for several metals and high‐density polyethylene. A standard pull test and peel test was performed with disks, made of different material and size. Adhesive failure was investigated by varying the amount of applied alginate solution, drying time, drying temperature, effect of surface area, and the nature of the adherend. Alginate adhesion was remarkably strong, relatively general, and sensitive to the presence of water. A brief comparison with other biopolymers is also provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shape memory polymer actuators have attracted great attention in the past few decades for developing soft robots, artificial muscles, and biomedical implants, among others. Herein, under a tutorial perspective, a series of shape memory actuators that display unidirectional movement upon exposure to specific external stimuli is explored. The mechanistic details associated with the movement of each system are also highlighted. In general, an overview of basic design principles, the chemical structure of molecular switches, the strategies used to achieve such controlled and unidirectional movement, as well as key experimental aspects, is provided. The most critical challenges of the existing devices that limit their practical applicability are also discussed. This is of utmost importance because such limitations must be overcome to fabricate micromotors that can generate complex movements, other than simple stretching/contraction or bending, to perform complex tasks. Arene regioisomerism in low‐molecular‐weight gelators can be exploited as a tool to modulate the micro‐structures of the corresponding xerogel networks by using the three different possible substitution patterns ortho, meta and para. This aromatic regioisomer‐driven strategy has been used with a cholesterol‐based gelator to prepare hollow self‐assembled organic nanotubes (S‐ONTs) with inside and outside diameters of ca. 35 and 140 nm, respectively. Electron microscopy imaging and theoretical calculations were employed to rationalize the formation mechanism of these S‐ONTs. From the three possible regioisomers, only the ortho‐disubstituted cholesteryl‐based gelator showed the optimal angle and distance between substituents to afford the formation of the cyclic assemblies required for nanotube growth by assembling 30–40 units of the gelator. This study opens fascinating opportunities to expand the synthesis of controllable and unique microstructures by modulating geometrical parameters through aromatic regioisomers. Etching of gallium nitride is a key step in the production of blue and white light‐emitting diodes (LEDs). Etching in aqueous KOH solution creates a rough surface on the LED chip to facilitate outcoupling of the photons generated, drastically increasing the resulting LED's efficiency. Compared with the common technique of dry etching, wet‐chemical etching using aqueous KOH solution has significant advantages, e.g., lower complexity and cost and less remaining surface damage. An in‐depth analysis of the molecular etch reaction by characterization of the reaction products is reported. The mechanism identified explains the cause of anisotropic etching, which leads to the formation of hexagonal pyramids. The concept of hydroxide repulsion by protruding NH and NH2 groups established in the literature is adapted and further developed. The susceptibility of several polar, semipolar, and nonpolar crystal facets may also be explained, as well as the commonly observed increase in average pyramid size over etch time. The recent demand for fluorescent‐labeled materials (FLMs) in forensic security concepts such as latent fingerprints (LFs) that encode information for anti‐counterfeiting and encryption of confidential data makes necessary the development of building new and innovative materials. Here, novel FLMs based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) functionalized with fluorophores via "click" reactions have been successfully synthesized and fully characterized. A comprehensive study of their photophysical properties has displayed large Stokes's shift together with good photostability in all cases, fulfilling the fundamental requisites for any legible LF detection on various surfaces. The excellent performance of the hetero‐bifunctional FLM in the visualization of LF is emphasized by their legibility, selectivity, sensitivity and temporal photostability. In this study, development mechanisms have been proposed and the overall concept constitute a novel approach for vis‐à‐vis forensic investigations to trace an individual's identity. This article describes the design and synthesis of a new series of hydrogel membranes composed of trialkyne derivatives of glycerol ethoxylate and bisphenol A diazide (BA‐diazide) or diazide‐terminated PEG600 monomer via a Cu(I)‐catalyzed photoclick reaction. The water‐swollen hydrogel membranes display thermoresponsive actuation and their lower critical solution temperature (LCST) values are determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Glycerol ethoxylate moiety serves as the thermoresponsive component and hydrophilic part, while the azide‐based component acts as the hydrophobic comonomer and most likely provides a critical hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance contributing also to the significant mechanical strength of the membranes. These hydrogels exhibit a reversible shape‐memory effect in response to temperature through a defined phase transition. The swelling and deswelling behavior of the membranes are systematically examined. Due to the click nature of the reaction, easy availability of azide and alkyne functional‐monomers, and the polymer architecture, the glass transition temperature (Tg) is easily controlled through monomer design and crosslink density by varying the feed ratio of different monomers. The mechanical properties of the membranes are studied by universal tensile testing measurements. The outcome of photosensitized [2+2]‐cycloaddition reactions of various cinnamates has been compared in different reaction media, including homogeneous organic solutions under inert conditions, degassed water, and aerated physical gels. The reactions were performed under LED blue light (λmax=455 nm) irradiation and [Ir{dF(CF3)ppy}2(dtb‐bpy)]PF6 (1.0 mol%) as photocatalyst. The processes were optimized taking into consideration solvent, gelator, and substrate. Comparative kinetics analyses, as well as the effect of the reaction media on the diastereoselectivity of the process, were evaluated during this investigation. In a number of cases, carrying out the reaction in a less polar solvent, like toluene or highly polar solvent, like water had a tremendous impact on the diastereoselectivity of the process, pointing towards an effect on the stabilization of the putative diradical intermediate in this medium. Moreover, while for reactions run in homogeneous solution oxygen needs to be excluded, no erosion in yield is observed when the photoadditions were run in aerated gel media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gorgonians dwelling on the Mediterranean continental shelf are among the most frequent fishing bycatch taxa. These species display several traits, such as long lifespans and slow growth, which make them very vulnerable to the impacts caused by fishing activities with far‐reaching and long‐lasting effects.Hence, restoration and mitigation actions are crucial to enhance and speed up the natural recovery of damaged cold‐water coral gardens. Given the growing concern to develop effective and affordable restoration actions, the present study aims to propose and technically validate a new large‐scale and cost‐effective restoration method.This technique, named 'badminton method', consists of attaching bycatch Eunicella cavolini colonies to cobble supports and returning them to the continental shelf by gently throwing the gorgonian transplants directly from a boat.Two consecutive field experiments were conducted in order to find the best cobble type support and gorgonian size to be used: first, to evaluate the landing efficiency of gorgonian transplants at different depths (from 5 to 30 m) and second, to evaluate their capability to maintain a correct position over time.Natural cobbles with large gorgonians attached were the best option. Field results and modelling approaches suggest that the transplants would correctly land on the continental shelf seabed in a predicted area of around 60 m2. Moreover, they would successfully maintain an upright position ensuring gorgonian survival over time.The success of this method highlights the feasibility of large‐scale and low‐cost restoration actions with promising results for the conservation and recovery of cold‐water coral gardens. Aims: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a very prevalent condition with a great impact on women's quality of life. At present, there is great controversy regarding the use of mesh in POP surgery. To understand the current moment, it is advisable to make a brief summary of the historical evolution of mesh use for pelvic floor pathology. The aim of this paper is to establish the position of the Ibero‐American Society of Neurourology and UroGynecology (SINUG for its acronym in Spanish) regarding vaginal mesh reconstructive surgery. Methods: A working committee from the SINUG's scientific board performed a literature search about the use of vaginal meshes for pelvic organ prolapse reconstructive surgery and about the position of different societies. We analyzed the evolution into three periods: before the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) statement, FDA statement, and after the statement. SINUG drew up a position statement regarding vaginal mesh reconstructive surgery, based on the available scientific evidence and the evolution of its use in different contexts. Results: Before mesh appearance in the 1990s, native tissue repair was the surgical treatment of choice for POP. Vaginal mesh reconstructive surgery has been frequently accompanied by procedure underestimation by inexperienced surgeons, besides inadequate diagnoses and indications. This situation led to the presentation of serious complications including mesh extrusion, exposure, and contraction. Aims: The aim of this paper is to stablish de position of the Ibero‐American Society of Neurourology and Urogynecology (SINUG) in relation to the use of suburethral meshes for the surgical treatment of female stress incontinence. Methods: Tension‐free mid‐urethral slings (MUS) have become the most popular procedure for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). In July 2018, the British government announced a pause in the use of meshes for both pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and urinary incontinence (UI) treatment without differentiating whether the meshes were used for treating UI or POP. The decision was taken to stop their use until the publication of the updated UI and POP guidelines of the British National Health Service, which is available from April 2019. SINUG has reviewed the evidence and official position of different societies in relation to the safety and efficacy of MUS in the surgical treatment of incontinence differentiating them from meshes used to repair POP. Results: Data from synthetic mesh manufacturers indicate that in 2010, 300 000 women underwent surgical procedures to repair POP and approximately 260 000 were operated on for SUI. According to these estimates, approximately more than 80% of the surgical techniques for UI treatment were performed transvaginally with meshes. Three‐dimensional (3D) scaffolds formed from natural biopolymers gelatin and chitosan that are chemically modified by galactose have shown improved hepatocyte adhesion, spheroid geometry and functions of the hepatocytes. Galactose specifically binds to the hepatocytes via the asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR) and an increase in galactose density further improves the hepatocyte proliferation and functions. In this work, we aimed to increase the galactose density within the biopolymeric scaffold by physically blending the biopolymers chitosan and gelatin with an amphiphlic β‐galactose polypeptide (PPO‐GP). PPO‐GP, is a di‐block copolymer with PPO and β‐galactose polypeptide, exhibits lower critical solution temperature and is entrapped within the scaffold through hydrophobic interactions. The uniform distribution of PPO‐GP within the scaffold was confirmed by fluorescence microscopy. SEM and mechanical testing of the hybrid scaffolds indicated pore size, inter connectivity and compression modulus similar to the scaffolds made from 100 % biopolymer. The presence of the PPO‐GP on the surface of the scaffold was tested monitoring the interaction of an analogous mannose containing PPO‐GP scaffold and the mannose binding lectin Con‐A. In vitro cell culture experiments with HepG2 cells were performed on GLN‐GP and CTS‐GP and their cellular response was compared with GLN and CTS scaffolds for a period of seven days. Within three days of culture the Hep G2 cells formed multicellular spheroids on GLN‐GP and CTS‐GP more efficiently than on the GLN and CTS scaffolds. The multicellular spheroids were also found to infiltrate more in GLN‐GP and CTS‐GP scaffolds and able to maintain their round morphology as observed by live/dead and SEM imaging. Objective: the main objective was to analyze the effects that an exercise programme based on the Pilates method would have on balance confidence, fear of falling, and postural control among women ≥60 years old. Methods: a total of 110 women (69.15 ± 8.94 years) participated in this randomized, controlled trial that took place in Jaén (Spain). The participants were randomly assigned to either a control group (n = 55), which received no intervention, or to a Pilates group (n = 55), which carried out an exercise programme based on the Pilates method in 60-minute sessions for 12 weeks. The Falls Efficacy Scale-International and the activity-specific balance confidence scale were respectively used to assess fear of falling and balance confidence in performing activities of daily living. Postural control was evaluated using a stabilometric platform. Results: Regarding balance confidence, the Pilates group showed higher values compared to the control group (77.52 ± 18.27 vs 72.35 ± 16.39, Cohen's d = 0.030). Women in the Pilates group showed lower fear of falling, compared to those of the control group (22.07 ± 5.73 vs 27.9 ± 6.95, Cohen's d = 0.041). Finally, concerning static balance, participants of the Pilates group experienced statistically significant improvements on the velocity and anteroposterior movements of the centre of pressure with eyes open and closed respectively (Cohen's d = 0.44 and 0.35 respectively). Objectives: To comprehensively evaluate the efficacy and safety of the hexanic extract of Serenoa repens (HESr, Permixon®; Pierre Fabre Médicament, Castres, France), at a dose of 320 mg daily, as monotherapy for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH). Materials and methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and prospective observational studies in patients with LUTS/BPH identified through searches in Medline, Web of Knowledge (Institute for Scientific Information), Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and bibliographic references up to March 2017. Articles studying S. repens extracts other than Permixon were excluded. Data were collected on International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax), nocturia, quality of life, prostate volume, sexual function, and adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Data obtained from RCTs and observational studies were analysed jointly and separately using a random effects model. A sub‐group analysis was performed of studies that included patients on longer‐term treatment (≥1 year). Results: Data from 27 studies (15 RCTs and 12 observational studies) were included for meta‐analysis (total N = 5 800). Compared with placebo, the HESr was associated with 0.64 (95% confidence interval [CI] −0.98 to −0.31) fewer voids/night (P < 0.001) and an additional mean increase in Qmax of 2.75 mL/s (95% CI 0.57 to 4.93; P = 0.01). When compared with α‐blockers, the HESr showed similar improvements on IPSS (weighted mean difference [WMD] 0.57, 95% CI −0.27 to 1.42; P = 0.18) and a comparable increase in Qmax to tamsulosin (WMD −0.02, 95% CI −0.71 to 0.66; P = 0.95). Efficacy assessed using the IPSS was similar after 6 months of treatment between the HESr and 5α‐reductase inhibitors (5ARIs). Analysis of all available published data for the HESr showed a mean improvement in IPSS from baseline of −5.73 points (95% CI −6.91 to −4.54; P < 0.001). HESr did not negatively affect sexual function and no clinically relevant effect was observed on prostate‐specific antigen. Prostate volume decreased slightly. Similar efficacy results were seen in patients treated for ≥1 year (n = 447). The HESr had a favourable safety profile, with gastrointestinal disorders being the most frequent ADR (mean incidence of 3.8%). Conclusion: The present meta‐analysis, which includes all available RCTs and observational studies, shows that the HESr (Permixon) reduced nocturia and improved Qmax compared with placebo and had a similar efficacy to tamsulosin and short‐term 5‐ARI in relieving LUTS. Abstract: Although several studies have been published regarding the morphology and anatomical variations of the human shoulder joint, most have dealt with adult individuals. Those looking into the development of the joint have been focused on specific structures or have observed specimens in advanced gestational stages. The goal of this paper is to perform a complete analysis of the embryonic and early fetal development of the elements in the shoulder joint, and to clarify some contradictory data in the literature. In our study, serial sections of 32 human embryos (Carnegie stages 16–23) and 26 fetuses (9–13 weeks) were analyzed. The chondrogenic anlagen of the humerus and the medial border of the scapula can be observed from as early as Carnegie stage 17, whereas that of the rest of the scapula appears at stage 18. The osteogenic process begins in week 10 for the humeral head and week 11 for the scapula. At stage 19 the interzone becomes apparent, which will form the glenohumeral joint. In the next stage the glenohumeral joint will begin delaminating and exhibiting a looser central band. Denser lateral bands will join the humeral head (caput humeri) and the margins of the articular surface of the scapula, thus forming the glenoid labrum, which can be fully appreciated by stage 22. In 24‐mm embryos (stage 21) we can observe, for the first time, the long head of the biceps tendon (which is already inserted in the glenoid labrum by week 9), and the intertubercular sulcus, whose depth is apparent since week 12. Regarding ligamentous structures, the coracohumeral ligament is observed at the end of Carnegie stage 23, whereas the primitive glenohumeral ligament already appeared in week 10. The results of this study provide a detailed description of the morphogenesis, origin and chronological order of appearance of the main intrinsic structures of the human shoulder joint during late embryonic and early fetal development. We expect these results to help explain several functional aspects of the shoulder joint, and to clarify some contradictory data in the literature regarding this complex anatomical and biomechanical structure, helping future researchers in their efforts. Abstract: Maërl is a benthic community composed of accumulations of coralline red algae with an essential eco‐biological role in marine ecosystems. This low‐resilience community has acquired a high conservation status as many anthropogenic impacts threaten this globally distributed ecosystem. Some of the potentially more important but less studied impacts are those caused by fishing activities due to the lack of proper controls. This study investigates the potential fishing impacts and depth‐related differences on the rhodolith morpho‐demographic traits of two maërl‐forming algae, Lithothamnion corallioides and Spongites fruticulosus, with distinct morphologies (ramified vs nucleated). Rhodolith size and shape (roundness and solidity) indicators were assessed in maërl beds protected from fishing inside a large 25‐year old no‐take MPA, in a contiguous 6‐year no‐take zone, and in adjacent fished beds. Rhodoliths of both species were bigger, rounder (spherical) and more solid (structurally less complex) in shallow than in deep beds of the long‐term protected area, which was probably a result of a more active hydrodynamic regime and higher irradiance in shallow beds. Fishing effects manifested differently depending on the morphological properties of rhodoliths, which resulted in a decrease in size and complexity in L. corallioides and roundness in S. fruticulosus. Such fishing impacts were significant only inside the short‐term 6‐year protected area. The most plausible cause of this unexpected observation is the highly localized trammel‐net fishing effort with long soak‐times along the boundary of the contiguous 25‐year MPA, where before closure, fishing effort was concentrated in expectation of greater catches from spillover (i.e. fishing the line). This is the first study to document the impacts of fishing the line on structural species and indicates that boundaries of successful MPAs could be zones of maximum disturbance, a fact that should be taken into account in management conservation decisions. Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition is shown here to be an efficient method to create adhesive materials in situ between glass and copper surfaces. Twelve formulations show adhesive strengths greater than a commercial product under comparable conditions, with the best combination of monomers the same as that previously developed for copper-copper adhesion. Strong adhesion is also achieved under water, an environment in which the commercial glue fails. Brass, iron, and stainless steel could also be adhered to glass using different formulations, but aluminum could not. The concentration and molar ratio of monomers, curing temperature, prefunctionalization of the glass surface, and the incorporation of flexibility-inducing components all have significant effects on adhesive performance. Gel materials have been recognized as promising confined media to enhance photoinduced reactions of reactants that are physically embedded in the gel network. In particular, stimuli-responsive supramolecular self-assembled gels that are unreactive to light irradiation constitute versatile materials to enhance both unimolecular and bimolecular photoinduced processes (in comparison to those carried out in solution) such as dimerization, isomerization and redox reactions, including multistep mechanisms. Reported is a modular approach for the incorporation and stabilization of gold nanoparticles inside a three-dimensional macroporous hydrogel made of ferritin. The strategy, which involves the dynamic templating of surfactant H1 domains, demineralization, and remineralization helps to overcome aggregation and degradation issues usually associated with bare-metal-based nanocatalysts. The catalytic activity of the so-synthesized bionanocomposite hydrogel was demonstrated in both nitroaldol (Henry) and nitroreduction model reactions in aqueous solution at room temperature. An interesting synergistic effect between basic residues of the protein and the gold nanoparticles was found in the nitroaldol reaction when carried out in water in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst. Furthermore, the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitroaniline catalyzed by the nanocomposite scaffold in the presence of NaBH4 proceeded significantly faster than that using other known Au- and Ag-based catalysts under similar conditions. GdIII-based metal-organic frameworks, Gd-pDBI-1 and Gd-pDBI-2, have been synthesized using the linker pDBI (pDBI=1,4-bis(5-carboxy-1H-benzimidazole-2yl)benzene). They exhibited structural diversity due to subtle change in reaction constituents. Owing to the judicious choice of the fluorescent linker, the materials could be used for bimodal imaging (fluorescent and magnetic resonance) and displayed a modest T1 relaxivity value. Coastal entangling net fisheries are globally ubiquitous and have substantial socioeconomic importance, especially in developing nations. Bycatch in coastal nets results in high mortality of vulnerable megafauna including seabirds, marine mammals, and sea turtles, and has led to fisheries closures that incur high social costs. The overlap of intense bottom-set net fisheries with a high-density foraging hot spot of endangered loggerhead turtles at Baja California Sur, Mexico (BCS) produces among the highest recorded megafauna bycatch rates worldwide. From 2007 to 2009, we conducted controlled experiments in partnership with local fishermen at BCS to compare turtle bycatch rates with target catch rates, composition, and market value between conventional (control) and buoyless (buoys removed from float line) nets. In 136 controlled sets of net pairs, buoyless nets reduced mean turtle bycatch rates by 68% while maintaining target catch rates and composition. Our results suggest that buoyless nets offer a promising approach for mitigating sea turtle and potentially other megafauna bycatch while maintaining coastal net fisheries worldwide. CdS nanoparticles were deposited on a highly stable, two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF) matrix and the hybrid was tested for photocatalytic hydrogen production. The efficiency of CdS-COF hybrid was investigated by varying the COF content. On the introduction of just 1 wt % of COF, a dramatic tenfold increase in the overall photocatalytic activity of the hybrid was observed. Among the various hybrids synthesized, that with 10 wt % COF, named CdS-COF (90:10), was found to exhibit a steep H2 production amounting to 3678 μmol h−1 g−1, which is significantly higher than that of bulk CdS particles (124 μmol h−1 g−1). The presence of a π-conjugated backbone, high surface area, and occurrence of abundant 2D hetero-interface highlight the usage of COF as an effective support for stabilizing the generated photoelectrons, thereby resulting in an efficient and high photocatalytic activity. We describe the self-assembly properties of chiral N, N′-disubstituted urea-based organocatalyst 1 that leads to the formation of hierarchical supramolecular gels in organic solvents at low concentrations. The major driving forces for the gelation are hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions according to FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, as well as quantum-mechanical studies. The gelation scope could be interpreted based on Kamlet-Taft solvatochromic parameters. TEM, SEM, and AFM imaging revealed that a variety of morphologies including helical, laths, porous, and lamellar nanostructures could be obtained by varying the solvent. Experimental gelation tests and computational structural analysis of various structurally related compounds proved the existence of a unique set of molecular interactions and an optimal hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance in 1 that drive the formation of stable gels. Responses to thermal, mechanical, optical, and chemical stimuli, as well as multifunctionality were demonstrated in some model gel materials. Specifically, 1 could be used for the phase-selective gelation of organic solvent/water mixtures. The gel prepared in glycerol was found to be thixotropic and provided a sensitive colorimetric method for the detection of AgI ions at millimolar concentrations in aqueous solution. Moreover, the gel matrix obtained in toluene served as a nanoreactor for the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of 1 H-indole with trans-β-nitrostyrene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electrically conductive adhesive polymers offer many potential advantages relative to SnPb solders, including reduced toxicity, low cost, low processing temperatures, and the ability to make application-specific formulations. Polymers generated from the copper(I)-catalyzed cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction between multivalent azides and alkynes have previously been identified as strong metal-binding adhesives. Herein we demonstrate that the performance of these materials can be remarkably improved by the incorporation of a flexibility-inducing difunctionalized component and a tertiary amine additive in optimized concentrations. The best formulations were identified by means of rapid adhesion testing of a library of potential candidates by using a custom-built instrument and validated in an American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)-standard lap-shear test. Characteristic phase transitions were identified by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for adhesives with and without the additives as a function of curing temperature. The incorporation of flexible components was found to more than double the strength of the adhesive. Moreover, the adhesive was made electrically conductive by the inclusion of 20 wt % silver-coated copper flakes and further improved in this regard by the incorporation of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in the formulation. A GdIII-based porous metal-organic framework (MOF), Gd-pDBI, has been synthesized using fluorescent linker pDBI (pDBI=(1,4-bis(5-carboxy-1H-benzimidazole-2-yl)benzene)), resulting in a three-dimensional interpenetrated structure with a one-dimensional open channel (1.9×1.2 nm) filled with hydrogen-bonded water assemblies. Gd-pDBI exhibits high thermal stability, porosity, excellent water stability, along with organic-solvent and mild acid and base stability with retention of crystallinity. Gd-pDBI was transformed to the nanoscale regime (ca. 140 nm) by mechanical grinding to yield MG-Gd-pDBI with excellent water dispersibility (>90 min), maintaining its porosity and crystallinity. In vitro and in vivo studies on MG-Gd-pDBI revealed its low blood toxicity and highest drug loading (12 wt %) of anticancer drug doxorubicin in MOFs reported to date with pH-responsive cancer-cell-specific drug release. The manifold applications of ionene-based materials such as hydrogels in daily life, biomedical sciences, and industrial processes are a consequence of their unique physical and chemical properties, which are governed by a judicious balance between multiple non-covalent interactions. However, one of the most critical aspects identified for a broader use of different polyelectrolytes is the need of raising their gelation efficiency. This work focuses on surfactant-free ionene polymers 1− 3 containing DABCO and N, N′-( x-phenylene)dibenzamide ( x = ortho-/ meta-/ para-) linkages as model systems to develop a combined computational-experimental approach to improve the hydrogelation through a better understanding of the gelation mechanism. Molecular dynamics simulations of isomeric ionenes 1-3 with explicit water molecules point out remarkable differences in the assembly of the polymeric chains in each case. Interchain regions with high degree of hydration (i.e., polymer···water interactions) and zones dominated by polymer···polymer interactions are evident in the case of ortho- ( 1) and meta- ( 2) isomeric ionenes, whereas domains controlled by polymer···polymer interactions are practically inexistent in 3. In excellent agreement, ortho-ionene 1 provides experimentally the best hydrogels with unique features such as thixotropic behavior and dispersion ability for single-walles carbon nanotubes.
