Duckweeds are a widely distributed and economically important aquatic plant family that have high potential for phytoremediation of polluted water bodies. We collected four ecotypes of the common duckweed Lemna minor from the four corners of Switzerland and assessed how their home versus away environments influenced their growth. Additionally, we investigated their response to a metal pollutant (zinc, Zn) in both their home and away environments. Zn is found in freshwater systems and can become harmful to plants at elevated concentrations. We hypothesized that growing in their home environment would help the plants buffer the negative effect of the metal pollutant. To test this, we measured Lemna growth in a common garden experiment in a glasshouse where the four ecotypes were grown in each of the water environments, as well as in three different concentrations of Zn. To investigate whether interactions between Lemna and its microbial community can enhance or reduce tolerance to heavy metal pollution, we sampled chlorophyll‐a as a proxy for algal biomass. Finally, we measured total nitrogen and total organic carbon to describe the abiotic environment in more detail. The four Lemna ecotypes exhibited significantly different growth rates across the water treatments. This difference in fitness was matched with DNA sequencing revealing genetic differentiation between the four ecotypes. However, the effect of the water and Zn treatment on Lemna growth was the same for all ecotypes. We did not find evidence for local adaptation; instead, we observed strong plastic responses. Lemna growth rates were higher under higher Zn concentrations. This positive effect of Zn on Lemna growth could be in part due to reduced competition with algae. We conclude that L. minor ecotypes may exhibit large differences in growth rate, but that the species overall has a high Zn tolerance and strong plastic adaptive potential in novel environments. Duckweeds, including the common duckweed Lemna minor, are increasingly used to test eco‐evolutionary theories. Yet, despite its popularity and near‐global distribution, the understanding of its population structure (and genetic variation therein) is still limited. It is essential that this is resolved, because of the impact genetic diversity has on experimental responses and scientific understanding. Through whole‐genome sequencing, we assessed the genetic diversity and population genomic structure of 23 natural Lemna spp. populations from their natural range in Switzerland. We used two distinct analytical approaches, a reference‐free kmer approach and the classical reference‐based one. Two genetic clusters were identified across the described species distribution of L. minor, surprisingly corresponding to species‐level divisions. The first cluster contained the targeted L. minor individuals and the second contained individuals from a cryptic species: Lemna japonica. Within the L. minor cluster, we identified a well‐defined population structure with little intra‐population genetic diversity (i.e., within ponds) but high inter‐population diversity (i.e., between ponds). In L. japonica, the population structure was significantly weaker and genetic variation between a subset of populations was as low as within populations. This study revealed that L. japonica is more widespread than previously thought. One of the primary sustainability challenges in aquaculture is replacing fish meal with plant‐based ingredients in aquafeeds. Plants are not optimal due to low protein content and antinutritional factors which can cause gut dysbiosis. Duckweed (Lemnaceae) is a family of aquatic plants with high protein content and has been used successfully for various types of animal feeds. In this systematic review and meta‐analysis of 58 papers, we summarize the extent by which duckweed has been used in fish production including the species of fish tested, the grow‐out stage of fish, and method of application. Duckweed studies spanned a total of 18 species of fish (16 freshwater and two marine) that collectively are valued at 263 billion USD annually, and comprise 28% of total aquaculture production by mass. The average experiment length was 72 days (SD 42), primarily at the fingerling life stage. Duckweed was fed to the fish through live grazing, dried, and pelleted forms with 20% inclusion as the most common formulation. The Lemna spp., dominated by L. minor, L. gibba, and unknown Lemna species, were the most commonly used for feeds. Spirodela polyrhiza was the second most common. Duckweed inclusion levels between 15% and 30% were associated with positive outcomes on fish growth and feed conversion ratio without any negative impact on survival rates. Most duckweed species, especially from Wollfiella have not been tested as a fish feed but should be explored whereas most studies focused on freshwater fishes rather than marine. Duckweed species (Lemnaceae) are suitable for remediation and valorization of agri‐feed industry wastewaters and therefore can contribute to a more sustainable, circular economy where waste is a resource. Industrial applications will, however, require space efficient cultivation methods that are not affected by prevailing weather conditions. Here, the development and operation of a multi‐tiered duckweed bioreactor is described. The developed prototype bioreactor depicted in this paper is composed of four cultivation layers (1 m2 each) with integrated LED lighting (generating up to 150 μmol m−2 s−1), a system of pumps and valves to manage the recirculatory flow (2.5 L min−1) of wastewater, and an automatic harvesting system. Using a nutrient poor medium, good growth of the duckweed species Lemna minor was achieved in the bioreactor, and this was matched by strong nutrient depletion from the medium, especially for phosphorus (45‐mg total phosphorus [TP] removed per m−2 day−1). A fully automatic harvesting arm reliably captured similar amounts of duckweed biomass across multiple harvesting cycles, revealing a future scenario whereby labor and interventions by human operators are minimized. Further developments to advance the system towards fully automated operation will include, for example, the use of specific nutrient sensors to monitor and control medium composition. It is envisaged that multi‐tiered, indoor bioreactors can be employed in the agri‐feed industry where wastewaters are, in many cases, continuously generated throughout the year and need remediating immediately to avoid costly storage. Given the extensive use of automation technology in conventional wastewater treatment plants, multi‐tiered duckweed bioreactors can be realistically integrated within the operating environment of such treatment plants. Zinc (Zn) is a metal of potential concern for a uranium mine whose receiving waters are in the World‐Heritage listed Kakadu National Park in northern Australia. The chronic toxicity of Zn was assessed using seven tropical species in extremely soft freshwater from a creek upstream of the mine. Sensitivity to Zn was as follows (most sensitive to least sensitive based on 10% effect concentrations [EC10s]): mussel Velesunio angasi > gastropod Amerianna cumingi > fish Mogurnda mogurnda > cladoceran Moinodaphnia macleayi > green hydra Hydra viridissima > green alga Chlorella sp. > duckweed Lemna aequinoctialis, with EC10s (<0.45 µm filtered fraction) ranging from 21 to 320 µg/L Zn and EC50s ranging from 52 to 1867 µg/L Zn. Summary: ENHANCED DISEASE SUSCEPTIBILITY 1 (EDS1) mediates the induction of defense responses against pathogens in most angiosperms. However, it has recently been shown that a few species have lost EDS1. It is unknown how defense against disease unfolds and evolves in the absence of EDS1. We utilize duckweeds; a collection of aquatic species that lack EDS1, to investigate this question.We established duckweed‐Pseudomonas pathosystems and used growth curves and microscopy to characterize pathogen‐induced responses. Through comparative genomics and transcriptomics, we show that the copy number of infection‐associated genes and the infection‐induced transcriptional responses of duckweeds differ from other model species.Pathogen defense in duckweeds has evolved along different trajectories than in other plants, including genomic and transcriptional reprogramming. Specifically, the miAMP1 domain‐containing proteins, which are absent in Arabidopsis, showed pathogen responsive upregulation in duckweeds. Despite such divergence between Arabidopsis and duckweed species, we found conservation of upregulation of certain genes and the role of hormones in response to disease.Our work highlights the importance of expanding the pool of model species to study defense responses that have evolved in the plant kingdom independent of EDS1. Lemna perpusilla and Lemna minor are free‐floating plants that often live in the same habitat. However, little is known about how they differ in response to herbivore attacks. In this study, we examined the species‐specific resistance of two Lemna species to the duckweed weevil, Tanysphyrus lemnae. The female adults of T. lemnae preferred to lay eggs on L. perpusilla over L. minor. In addition, the larvae of T. lemnae performed better when fed on L. perpusilla than on L. minor. To understand the physiological basis of species‐specific resistance in the two Lemna species, we measured the amounts of jasmonic acid (JA), phytosterols, and flavonoids. Attacks by duckweed weevils increased the levels of JA in the two Lemna species, but these levels did not differ significantly between the two species. Interestingly, the levels of flavones (isoorientin, vitexin, and isovitexin) in L. minor species were higher than those in L. perpusilla. The in vitro bioassay showed that three flavones significantly decreased the survival rate of duckweed weevil larvae. Although L. perpusilla was less resistant to duckweed weevil attack compared to L. minor, L. perpusilla grew faster than L. minor regardless of the duckweed weevil attack. Duckweeds are the smallest angiosperms, possessing a simple body architecture and highest rates of biomass accumulation. They can grow near‐exponentially via clonal propagation. Understanding their reproductive biology, growth, and development is essential to unlock their potential for phytoremediation, carbon capture, and nutrition. However, there is a lack of non‐laborious and convenient methods for spatially and temporally imaging an array of duckweed plants and growth conditions in the same experiment. We developed an automated microscopy approach to record time‐lapse images of duckweed plants growing in 12‐well cell culture plates. As a proof‐of‐concept experiment, we grew duckweed on semi‐solid media with and without sucrose and monitored its effect on their growth over 3 days. Using the PlantCV toolkit, we quantified the thallus area of individual plantlets over time, and showed that L. minor grown on sucrose had an average growth rate four times higher than without sucrose. This method will serve as a blueprint to perform automated high‐throughput growth assays for studying the development patterns of duckweeds from different species, genotypes, and conditions. Duckweeds (Lemnaceae) are increasingly studied for their potential for phytoremediation of heavy‐metal polluted water bodies. A prerequisite for metal removal, however, is the tolerance of the organism to the pollutant, e.g., the metal zinc (Zn). Duckweeds have been shown to differ in their tolerances to Zn; however, despite them most commonly co‐occurring with other species, there is a lack of research concerning the effect of species interactions on Zn tolerance. Here, we tested whether the presence of a second species influenced the growth rate of the three duckweed species Lemna minor, Lemna gibba, and Lemna turionifera. We used four different Zn concentrations in a replicated microcosm experiment under sterile conditions, either growing the species in isolation or in a two‐species mixture. The response to Zn differed between species, but all three species showed a high tolerance to Zn, with low levels of Zn even increasing the growth rates. The growth rates of the individual species were influenced by the identity of the competing species, but this was independent of the Zn concentration. Our results suggest that species interactions should be considered in future research with duckweeds and that several duckweed species have high tolerance to metal pollution, making them candidates for phytoremediation efforts. Selenium (Se)‐affected stormwater runoff raises concerns about potential downstream impact of Se on aquatic ecosystems. Unplanted (UNP) detention ponds augmented with cattail (Typha angustifolia L.; CAT) and duckweed (Lemna minor L.; DWD) may provide a solution for continuous, rapid abatement of Se‐affected runoff. This research was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of CAT or DWD and determining the distribution of Se within a continually flooded detain and drain system. Microcosms containing 3 kg of soil planted to either one CAT, 25 g fresh DWD, or left unplanted (UNP, control) were flooded with a 3‐L solution at 40 μg Se L−1, as sodium selenate (Na2SeO4), or a zero Se control. Over two 10‐d flood–discharge cycles (FDCs), plants in microcosms were evaluated in growth chambers maintained at 30 °C under a 12‐h photoperiod with 400 μmol m−2 s−1 irradiance. Initial and final water, soil, plant, and granular activated charcoal (GAC) were analyzed for total [Se] with inductively coupled plasma–mass spectroscopy (ICP–MS). Data were analyzed with PROC GLM (SAS EG 7.1) at α =.05. Within 10 d after Se application, CAT and DWD decreased aqueous Se from 40 μg Se L−1 to below the 11.8 μg Se L−1 threshold. Selenium recovery ranged between 75 and 100% of the applied Se. In continually flooded systems, the primary elimination pathway appears to be associated with the soil solid phase. Cattail and DWD are suitable species for constructed wetland phytoremediation of Se‐affected runoff. The microcosm design presented may be useful for future evaluations. The duckweed family (Lemnaceae) is a group of free‐floating aquatic plants with bodies consisting of single floating fronds that multiply clonally. Although they are known to have the fastest relative growth rate (RGR) among higher plants, their functional trait coordination in relation to within‐family variation of RGR is poorly understood.We tested how duckweed species fit within the trait covariation patterns known as the world‐wide leaf economics spectrum (LES). To this end, several functional traits were evaluated for 15 duckweed species, and their covariation patterns were compared with those in the global database of plant functional traits.As a group, duckweeds exhibited the most acquisitive suite of traits, with extremely small leaf mass per area (LMA), short life span and high mass‐based photosynthetic rate (Amass). These LES traits showed a tight correlation with RGR, corroborating our hypothesis that acquisitive leaf resource economics underpins their extremely high RGR. However, unlike other higher plants, LMA showed weak association with leaf life span and Amass within duckweed family. We also found a unique positive correlation between duckweed LMA and area‐based photosynthetic rates, an indication that their LMA represents different functional significance compared to typical higher plants.Synthesis. Duckweeds, the world's fastest growing plants, mostly follow the world‐wide LES and locate at its extreme end. Species of Lemnaceae have a high potential for fast biomass production, and this is increasingly gaining attention among researchers in basic plant sciences as well as among entrepreneurs for feed, food and energy production. Hence, the correct identification of the species being used for different duckweed research and applications is becoming indispensable. Here, we present an updated identification key based on morphological markers to the currently accepted 36 species of duckweeds, considering all taxonomic revisions since the publication of the previous key by E. Premise: Outcomes of species interactions, especially mutualisms, are notoriously dependent on environmental context, and environments are changing rapidly. Studies have investigated how mutualisms respond to or ameliorate anthropogenic environmental changes, but most have focused on nutrient pollution or climate change and tested stressors one at a time. Relatively little is known about how mutualisms may be altered by or buffer the effects of multiple chemical contaminants, which differ fundamentally from nutrient or climate stressors and are especially widespread in aquatic habitats. Methods: We investigated the impacts of two contaminants on interactions between the duckweed Lemna minor and its microbiome. Sodium chloride (salt) and benzotriazole (a corrosion inhibitor) often co‐occur in runoff to water bodies where duckweeds reside. We tested three L. minor genotypes with and without the culturable portion of their microbiome across field‐realistic gradients of salt (3 levels) and benzotriazole (4 levels) in a fully factorial experiment (24 treatments, tested on each genotype) and measured plant and microbial growth. Results: Stressors had conditional effects. Salt decreased both plant and microbial growth and decreased plant survival more as benzotriazole concentrations increased. In contrast, benzotriazole did not affect microbial abundance and even benefited plants when salt and microbes were absent, perhaps due to biotransformation into growth‐promoting compounds. Microbes did not ameliorate duckweed stressors; microbial inoculation increased plant growth, but not at high salt concentrations. Conclusions: Our results suggest that multiple stressors matter when predicting responses of mutualisms to global change and that beneficial microbes may not always buffer hosts against stress. Lemna sect. Uninerves Hegelm. consists of three species, Lemna minuta Kunth (synonym L. minuscula), L. valdiviana Phil. and L. yungensis Landolt. Lemna yungensis was discovered growing on rocks in the Yungas in Bolivia by E. Landolt and was described just 20 years ago. In the original description, Landolt reported that this species is closely related to L. valdiviana and that it is difficult to distinguish the three species on a morphological basis. Therefore, the taxonomic position and status of L. yungensis remained controversial. Here, we carried out a detailed taxonomic study, integrating approaches that include quantitative morphometry, metabolomic profiling by matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF‐MS) as well as molecular genetic analysis using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), and barcoding of plastidic sequences. We also investigated genome sizes of clones of the three species. Whereas L. minuta can easily be differentiated from L. valdiviana and L. yungensis, it was not possible to distinguish L. valdiviana from L. yungensis with any of the methods used. These data imply that L. yungensis is identical to L. valdiviana. Thus, the name L. yungensis should be synonymised with the name L. valdiviana, since this is the older name. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: The fast growth, ease of metabolic labelling and potential for feedstock and biofuels production make duckweeds not only an attractive model system for understanding plant biology, but also a potential future crop. However, current duckweed research is constrained by the lack of efficient genetic manipulation tools. Here, we report a case study on genome editing in a duckweed species, Lemna aequinoctialis, using a fast and efficient transformation and CRISPR/Cas9 tool. By optimizing currently available transformation protocols, we reduced the duration time of Agrobacterium‐mediated transformation to 5–6 weeks with a success rate of over 94%. Based on the optimized transformation protocol, we generated 15 (14.3% success rate) biallelic LaPDS mutants that showed albino phenotype using a CRISPR/Cas9 system. Investigations on CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated mutation spectrum among mutated L. aequinoctialis showed that most of mutations were short insertions and deletions. This study presents the first example of CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated genome editing in duckweeds, which will open new research avenues in using duckweeds for both basic and applied research. Studies focusing on manipulation of growth conditions for duckweed Wolffia arrhiza to promote biomass for crop nutrient supply, are scarce. The effects of swine lagoon water (SLW) concentration and its replenishment and harvest regimes on selected properties of W. arrhiza were investigated. Dry matter and average growth rate of W. arrhiza were not affected by SLW replenishment periods, whereas the properties decreased with increasing concentration of SLW. The carbon and carbon/nitrogen content increased as the period between solution replenishment increased and as SLW concentration declined from 15 to 5%. Harvesting regimes did not affect the nitrogen content and uptake of duckweed, NH4+‐N, and mineral‐N of SLW. Harvesting duckweed once per week resulted in higher growth rate and biomass, compared with twice a week. Findings from this study suggest that W. arrhiza cultured on 10% SLW and harvested once a week yields biomass with nitrogen content suitable for crop nutrient supply. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Duckweeds are the fastest growing angiosperms and have the potential to become a new generation of sustainable crops. Although a seed plant, Spirodela polyrhiza clones rarely flower and multiply mainly through vegetative propagation. Whole‐genome sequencing using different approaches and clones yielded two reference maps. One for clone 9509, supported in its assembly by optical mapping of single DNA molecules, and one for clone 7498, supported by cytogenetic assignment of 96 fingerprinted bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs) to its 20 chromosomes. However, these maps differ in the composition of several individual chromosome models. We validated both maps further to resolve these differences and addressed whether they could be due to chromosome rearrangements in different clones. For this purpose, we applied sequential multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (mcFISH) to seven S. polyrhiza clones, using 106 BACs that were mapped onto the 39 pseudomolecules for clone 7498. Furthermore we integrated high‐depth Oxford Nanopore (ON) sequence data for clone 9509 to validate and revise the previously assembled chromosome models. We found no major structural rearrangements between these seven clones, identified seven chimeric pseudomolecules and Illumina assembly errors in the previous maps, respectively. A new S. polyrhiza genome map with high contiguity was produced with the ON sequence data and genome‐wide synteny analysis supported the occurrence of two Whole Genome Duplication events during its evolution. This work generated a high confidence genome map for S. polyrhiza at the chromosome scale, and illustrates the complementarity of independent approaches to produce whole‐genome assemblies in the absence of a genetic map. Significance statement: Cytogenomic studies with 106 fingerprinted BACs, along with integration of Oxford Nanopore‐derived sequence data, enable full resolution of previous discrepancies between two genome maps for S. polyrhiza and provide a validated chromosome map for comparative genome mapping of other duckweed species, therefore demonstrating the utility of combinatorial approaches to generate high‐quality genome maps from organisms without available genetic maps. Abstract: Comparative studies have demonstrated extensive variation in age trajectories of mortality and fecundity, both within and among species, with many taxa exhibiting a general pattern of age‐related demographic decline referred to as senescence. Whereas a considerable body of theory is devoted to explaining the origin and persistence of senescence, the evolutionary forces underlying variation in demographic trajectories more generally remain poorly understood. Studying variation in demographic trajectories is complicated by the fact that different species (or even different populations of a given species) may live and reproduce on different time‐scales, which, for comparative purposes, can make it challenging to disentangle patterns of age‐related demographic change (the shape of demographic age trajectories) from the time‐scale on which those changes happen (the pace of demographic age trajectories). Here, we examine variation in the pace and shape of demographic trajectories among strains of the aquatic plant Lemna turionifera Landolt from 24 sites across Alberta, Canada. Our main objectives were to describe the shape of demographic trajectories in L. turionifera, and test for among‐strain variation in pace and shape. We also tested whether potential variation in pace and shape is (1) constrained by trade‐offs with other life‐history traits, and (2) consistent with local adaptation to environmental characteristics at the sites of strain origin. The strains we examined were overwhelmingly subject to age‐related increases in mortality and declines in fecundity, with increases in mortality tending to decelerate and plateau at advanced ages. Despite substantial among‐strain variation in cumulative fecundity and plant size, measures of pace and shape did not in themselves vary significantly among strains. Both within and among strains, we observed a negative relationship between plant size and the shape of fecundity trajectories, but we found no other evidence for life‐history trade‐offs involving pace or shape, nor for local adaptation. Synthesis. Angiosperms display remarkable demographic variation. Our results suggest that the pace and shape of demographic trajectories are highly conserved within one particular angiosperm species (Lemna turionifera), despite substantial among‐strain variation in other life‐history traits. Abstract: The transfer of the toxic heavy metal Cd from duckweed (Lemna minor L.) to the freshwater fish tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) was investigated. Concentrations of Cd in different chemical forms in duckweed and in different tissues (gut, edible muscle, and remnants or residual) of tilapia (i.e., ethanol‐extractable fraction [FE], HCl‐extractable fraction [FHCl], and residual fraction [FR]) were quantified, and the bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of Cd in the tilapia body were calculated. Simple linear regression analysis was used to unravel the correlation and accumulation mechanisms of Cd along the short food chain. Our results showed that with increasing exposure concentrations of Cd (0–50 μM for duckweed and 0–10 μM for tilapia), the total, FE (Fe,d)‐, FHCl (Fh,d)‐, and FR (Fr,d)‐Cd concentrations in duckweed and different tissues of tilapia increased progressively. The Cd sources (aqueous or dietary) influenced the BAF for Cd accumulation in the whole body of tilapia. Furthermore, regression analyses yielded significant positive correlations (R2 > 0.96) between the Cd concentration in duckweed and in both the 3 parts and the whole body of tilapia. This finding suggests that Cd transfer from duckweed to tilapia can be quantitatively evaluated when tilapia is exposed only to duckweed. In addition, the linear regression between Cd accumulation in whole tilapia and Fe,d‐, Fh,d‐, and Fr,d‐Cd showed that particularly the correlation with Fe,d‐Cd is statistically significant (p < 0.001). The accumulated Cd concentrations and chemical forms in tilapia tissues also positively correlated with Cd sources (solution or duckweed). Compared with waterborne exposure only, duckweed especially increased the accumulation of Cd in the gut of tilapia. Taken together, our findings support a strong dependence of Cd accumulation and transfer from duckweed to tilapia on its chemical forms, especially on Fe,d‐Cd. Offspring quality decreases with parental age in many taxa, with offspring of older parents exhibiting reduced life span, reproductive capacity, and fitness, compared to offspring of younger parents. These 'parental age effects,' whose consequences arise in the next generation, can be considered as manifestations of parental senescence, in addition to the more familiar age-related declines in parent-generation survival and reproduction. Parental age effects are important because they may have feedback effects on the evolution of demographic trajectories and longevity. In addition to altering the timing of offspring life-history milestones, parental age effects can also have a negative impact on offspring size, with offspring of older parents being smaller than offspring of younger parents. Here, we consider the effects of advancing parental age on a different aspect of offspring morphology, body symmetry. In this study, we followed all 403 offspring of 30 parents of a bilaterally symmetrical, clonally reproducing aquatic plant species, Lemna turionifera, to test the hypothesis that successive offspring become less symmetrical as their parent ages, using the 'Continuous Symmetry Measure' as an index. Traditional duckweed toxicity tests only measure plant growth inhibition as an endpoint, with limited effects-based data. The present study aimed to investigate whether Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy could enhance the duckweed ( Lemna minor L.) toxicity test. Four chemicals (Cu, Cd, atrazine, and acetochlor) and 4 metal-containing industrial wastewater samples were tested. After exposure of duckweed to the chemicals, standard toxicity endpoints (frond number and chlorophyll content) were determined; the fronds were also interrogated using FTIR spectroscopy under optimized test conditions. Biochemical alterations associated with each treatment were assessed and further analyzed by multivariate analysis. The results showed that comparable x% of effective concentration (EC x) values could be achieved based on FTIR spectroscopy in comparison with those based on traditional toxicity endpoints. Biochemical alterations associated with different doses of toxicant were mainly attributed to lipid, protein, nucleic acid, and carbohydrate structural changes, which helped to explain toxic mechanisms. With the help of multivariate analysis, separation of clusters related to different exposure doses could be achieved. Duckweed can be used for bioremediation of selenium (Se) polluted water because of its capability of absorbing minerals from growing media. However, the presence of Se in the media may affect the growth of the duckweed. Landoltia punctata 7449 has been studied for its changes in chemical and biological properties with the presence of Se in the media., The duckweed was cultivated over a 12-day period at different initial concentrations of selenite (Na2SeO3) from 0 to 80 μmol·l−1. The growth rate, the organic and total Se contents, the activity of antioxidant enzymes, the photosynthetic pigment contents, the chlorophyll a fluorescence OJIP transient, and the ultrastructure of the duckweed were monitored during the experiment., The results have shown that Se at low concentrations of ≤20 μmol·l−1 promoted the growth of the L. punctata and inhibited lipid peroxidation. Substantial increases in duckweed growth rate and organic Se content in the duckweed were observed at low Se concentrations. The anti-oxidative effect occurred likely with the increases in guaiacol peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase activities as well as the amount of photosynthetic pigments. However, negative impact to the duckweed was observed when the L. punctata was exposed to high Se concentrations (≥40 μmol·l−1), in which the duckweed growth was inhibited by the selenium., The results indicate that L. punctata 7449 can be used for bioremediation of selenium (Se) polluted water when the Se concentration is ≤20 μmol·l−1. Therapeutic antibodies against tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) have been considered effective for some of the autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's diseases, and so on. But associated limitations of the current therapeutics in terms of cost, availability, and immunogenicity have necessitated the need for alternative candidates. Single-chain variable fragment (scFv) can negate the limitations tagged with the anti-TNFα therapeutics to a greater extent. In the present study, Spirodela punctata plants were transformed with anti-TNFα through in planta transformation using Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain, EHA105. Instead of cefotaxime, garlic extract (1 mg/mL) was used to remove the agrobacterial cells after cocultivation. To the best of our knowledge, this report shows for the first time the application of plant extracts in transgenic plant development. 95% of the plants survived screening under hygromycin. ScFv cDNA integration in the plant genomic DNA was confirmed at the molecular level by PCR. The transgenic protein expression was followed up to 10 months. Expression of scFv was confirmed by immunodot blot. Protein expression levels of up to 6.3% of total soluble protein were observed. β-Glucuronidase and green fluorescent protein expressions were also detected in the antibiotic resistant plants. PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Discovery and morphological characterization of a novel epiphytic aquatic green alga increases our understanding of Chaetopeltidales, a poorly known order in Chlorophyceae. Chloroplast genomic data from this taxon reveals an unusual architecture previously unknown in green algae. METHODS: Using light and electron microscopy, we characterized the morphology and ultrastructure of a novel taxon of green algae. Bayesian phylogenetic analyses of nuclear and plastid genes were used to test the hypothesized membership of this taxon in order Chaetopeltidales. With next-generation sequence data, we assembled the plastid genome of this novel taxon and compared its gene content and architecture to that of related species to further investigate plastid genome traits. KEY RESULTS: The morphology and ultrastructure of this alga are consistent with placement in Chaetopeltidales (Chlorophyceae), but a distinct trait combination supports recognition of this alga as a new genus and species--Koshicola spirodelophila gen. et sp. nov. Its placement in the phylogeny as a descendant of a deep division in the Chaetopeltidales is supported by analysis of molecular data sets. The chloroplast genome is among the largest reported in green algae and the genes are distributed on three large (rather than a single) chromosome, in contrast to other studied green algae. CONCLUSIONS: The discovery of Koshicola spirodelophila gen. et sp. nov. highlights the importance of investigating even commonplace habitats to explore new microalgal diversity. • Duckweeds are aquatic monocotyledonous plants of potential economic interest with fast vegetative propagation, comprising 37 species with variable genome sizes (0.158-1.88 Gbp). The genomic sequence of Spirodela polyrhiza, the smallest and the most ancient duckweed genome, needs to be aligned to its chromosomes as a reference and prerequisite to study the genome and karyotype evolution of other duckweed species. • We selected physically mapped bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs) containing Spirodela DNA inserts with little or no repetitive elements as probes for multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (mcFISH), using an optimized BAC pooling strategy, to validate its physical map and correlate it with its chromosome complement. • By consecutive mcFISH analyses, we assigned the originally assembled 32 pseudomolecules (supercontigs) of the genomic sequences to the 20 chromosomes of S. polyrhiza. A Spirodela cytogenetic map containing 96 BAC markers with an average distance of 0.89 Mbp was constructed. Using a cocktail of 41 BACs in three colors, all chromosome pairs could be individualized simultaneously. • Seven ancestral blocks emerged from duplicated chromosome segments of 19 Spirodela chromosomes. Predicting selenium bioaccumulation is complicated because site-specific conditions, including the ionic composition of water, affect the bioconcentration of inorganic selenium into the food web. Selenium tissue concentrations were measured in Lemna minor and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata following exposure to selenate and sulfate. Selenium accumulation differed between species, and sulfate reduced selenium uptake in both species, indicating that ionic constituents, in particular sulfate, are important in modifying selenium uptake by primary producers. Duckweed Lemna gibba has been listed as a promising plant for wastewater treatment and energy biomass production. This study aims to study the efficacy of L. gibba based bioreactor in removal of wastewater pollutants loads and energy-rich biomass harvesting under different plant biomass density loads. A total of four density loads: 20% (T1), 40% (T2), 60% (T3), and 80% (T4) of inoculants biomass were used to construct duckweed reactors and changes in wastewater (WW) and duckweed biomass characteristics (growth rate, biochemical composition etc.) were recorded for 21 days. The nutrient load in WW reduced significantly: NO3−N (83-89%), SO42- 30 (85-86%) and total phosphorus (TP) (67-72%) at the end in all experimental set-ups. The reactor with 20% inoculation density showed the maximum WW nutrient removal. The weed biomass yield showed the direct relationship with inoculation density in all experimental set-ups. The yield (dry weight basis) of carbohydrate, starch and protein was: 1.39-1.77 g m−2 day−1, 1.10-1.20 g m−2 day−1, and 1.9-2.24 g m−2 day−1, respectively in different set-ups. The high yield of starch under optimized density load suggests the utility of harvested biomass for bioethanol production. Lemnaceae (duckweeds) are widely distributed aquatic flowering plants. Their high growth rate, starch content and suitability for bioremediation make them potential feedstock for biofuels. However, few natural duckweed resources have been investigated in China, and there is no information about total fatty acid ( TFA) and triacylglycerol ( TAG) composition of duckweeds from China. Here, the genetic diversity of a natural duckweed population collected from Lake Chao, China, was investigated using multilocus sequence typing ( MLST). The 54 strains were categorised into four species in four genera, representing 12 distinct sequence types. Strains representing Lemna aequinoctialis and Spirodela polyrhiza were predominant. Interestingly, a surprisingly high degree of genetic diversification within L. aequinoctialis was observed. The four duckweed species revealed a uniform fatty acid composition, with three fatty acids, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid, accounting for more than 80% of the TFA. The TFA in biomass varied among species, ranging from 1.05% (of dry weight, DW) for L. punctata and S. polyrhiza to 1.62% for Wolffia globosa. The four duckweed species contained similar TAG contents, 0.02% mg· DW−1. The fatty acid profiles of TAG were different from those of TFA, and also varied among the four species. The survey investigated the genetic diversity of duckweeds from Lake Chao, and provides an initial insight into TFA and TAG of four duckweed species, indicating that intraspecific and interspecific variations exist in the content and composition of both TFA and TAG in comparison with other studies. This study determined the greenhouse gas emission from two laboratory-scale duckweed ponds for stormwater treatment. The rate of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from the two duckweed systems was 1472 ± 721 mg/m²·d and 626 ± 234 mg/m²·d, respectively. After the removal of duckweeds, CO2 emissions decreased to 492 ± 281 mg/m²·d and 395 ± 53 mg/m²·d, respectively. The higher CO2 emissions in the duckweed systems were attributed to duckweed biomass decay on the pond soil surface. A thin-film model was able to predict the increasing CO2 concentrations in the closed static chamber during 2 weeks of sampling. The initial methane fluxes from the duckweed systems were 299 ± 74 mg/m²·d and 180 ± 91 mg/m²·d, respectively. Relative growth rates ( RGR), doubling times ( DT) and relative weekly yields ( RY) of 39 clones (ecotypes) from 13 species representing all five genera of duckweeds were determined under standardised cultivation conditions. RGR ranged overall from 0.153 to 0.519 day−1, DT from 1.34 to 4.54 days and RY from 2.9 to 37.8 week−1. The RGR and RY data can be compared directly to other published findings to only a limited extent on account of missing clonal designations for and limited accessibility to previously investigated clones, as well as the use of different data denominators. However, they are consistent with the published results of other comparative duckweed studies of similar scope in showing that RGR does not vary primarily at the level of the genus or species, but rather reflects the adaptation of individual clones to specific local conditions. The RGR data support the widely held assumption that duckweeds can grow faster than other higher plants and that they can thus surpass land-based agricultural crops in productivity. Duckweeds are highly promising for the production of biomass for nutrition and energy, but extensive clonal comparison will be required to identify the most suitable isolates for this purpose. Turions play an important role in the survival strategy of the duckweed Spirodela polyrhiza. Therefore, factors influencing the formation of these survival organs were studied. Phosphate deficiency is the main natural factor inducing turion formation and the specific turion yield ( SY), i.e. the number of turions formed per frond, varied widely for five different clones from different climate zones. The concentrations of phosphate and nitrate in the nutrient media were investigated at the onset of turion formation, with SY ranging from 0.22 to 5.9. Tissue P and N content was also investigated in vegetative fronds at the onset of turion formation and in newly formed turions. The clones were selected to test possible correlations between SY and threshold nutrient concentration for turion formation. Only one correlation, between SY and external phosphate concentration, was significant: clones with high SY started turion formation at higher external phosphate concentrations. Turion formation is thus mainly induced by the external phosphate concentration, below a defined, clone-dependent threshold. We propose the following mechanism: a switch of the developmental programme of frond primordia from vegetative frond to turion formation at a higher phosphate threshold saves more phosphate for turion formation instead of using it for a further vegetative growth. However, the period of growth preceding turion formation does not depend on this threshold value, but rather on the growth rate of the vegetative fronds, which actually produce the phosphate shortage by taking it up from the surrounding medium. The accessibility of DNA during fundamental processes, such as transcription, replication and DNA repair, is tightly modulated through a dynamic chromatin structure. Differences in large-scale chromatin structure at the microscopic level can be observed as euchromatic and heterochromatic domains in interphase nuclei. Here, key epigenetic marks, including histone H3 methylation and 5-methylcytosine (5-m C) as a DNA modification, were studied cytologically to describe the chromatin organisation of representative species of the five duckweed genera in the context of their nuclear DNA content, which ranged from 158 to 1881 Mbp. All studied duckweeds, including Spirodela polyrhiza with a genome size and repeat proportion similar to that of Arabidopsis thaliana, showed dispersed distribution of heterochromatin signatures (5m C, H3 K9me2 and H3 K27me1). This immunolabelling pattern resembles that of early developmental stages of Arabidopsis nuclei, with less pronounced heterochromatin chromocenters and heterochromatic marks weakly dispersed throughout the nucleus. Analysis with 15 N NMR revealed that alanine, a universal cellular stress signal, accumulates in etiolated duckweed plants exposed to 15-min pulsed UV light, but not in the absence of UV irradiation. The addition of 10 m m vitamin C, a radical scavenger, reduced alanine levels to zero, indicating the involvement of free radicals. Free D-alanine was detected in 15 N NMR analysis of the chiral amino acid content, using D-tartaric acid as solvent. Significant inter- and intraspecific genetic variation exists in duckweed, thus the potential for genome plasticity and manipulation is high. Polyploidy is recognised as a major mechanism of adaptation and speciation in plants. We produced several genome-duplicated lines of Landoltia punctata (Spirodela oligorrhiza) from both whole plants and regenerating explants using a colchicine-based cocktail. These lines stably maintained an enlarged frond and root morphology. DNA ploidy levels determined by florescence-activated cell sorting indicated genome duplication. Line A4 was analysed after 75 biomass doublings. Frond area, fresh and dry weights, rhizoid number and length were significantly increased versus wild type, while the growth rate was unchanged. This resulted in accumulation of biomass 17-20% faster in the A4 plants. We sought to determine if specific differences in gene products are found in the genome duplicated lines. Non-targeted ultra performance LC-quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry was employed to compare some of the lines and the wild type to seek identification of up-regulated metabolites. We putatively identified differential metabolites in Line A65 as caffeoyl hexoses. The combination of directed genome duplication and metabolic profiling might offer a path for producing stable gene expression, leading to altered production of secondary metabolites. Despite rapid doubling time, simple architecture and ease of metabolic labelling, a lack of genetic tools in the Lemnaceae (duckweed) has impeded the full implementation of this organism as a model for biological research. Here, we present technologies to facilitate high-throughput genetic studies in duckweed. We developed a fast and efficient method for producing Lemna minor stable transgenic fronds via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and regeneration from tissue culture. Additionally, we engineered an artificial micro RNA (ami RNA) gene silencing system. We identified a Lemna gibba endogenous mi R166 precursor and used it as a backbone to produce ami RNAs. As a proof of concept we induced the silencing of CH42, a magnesium chelatase subunit, using our ami RNA platform. Expression of CH42 in transgenic L. minor fronds was significantly reduced, which resulted in reduction of chlorophyll pigmentation. Duckweed can be utilised to produce ethanol, butanol and biogas, which are promising alternative energy sources to minimise dependence on limited crude oil and natural gas. The advantages of this aquatic plant include high rate of nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) uptake, high biomass yield and great potential as an alternative feedstock for the production of fuel ethanol, butanol and biogas. The objective of this article is to review the published research on growing duckweed for the production of the biofuels, especially starch enrichment in duckweed plants. There are mainly two processes affecting the accumulation of starch in duckweed biomass: photosynthesis for starch generation and metabolism-related starch consumption. The cost of stimulating photosynthesis is relatively high based on current technologies. Considerable research efforts have been made to inhibit starch degradation. Future research need in this area includes duckweed selection, optimisation of duckweed biomass production, enhancement of starch accumulation in duckweeds and use of duckweeds for production of various biofuels. Our ability to predict and manage the spread of alien, invasive plants is limited by a lack of understanding of dispersal potential. Invasive Lemna minuta has spread within a few decennia throughout Europe. However, the mechanism by which the species continues to spread remains a matter of speculation. In this study, hypothesised epizoochorous transport of L. minuta propagules by mallard ducks was investigated. Landolt (Biosystematic investigations in the family of duckweeds (Lemnaceae) (Vol. 2), The family of Lemnaceae - a monographic study (Vol. 1), 1986, Veröffentlichungen des Geobotanischen Institutes Der Eidg. Techniasche Hochschule, Stiftung Rübel, Zürich, Switzerland) referred to desiccation as the key limitation of the 'colonization capability' of Lemnaceae. Therefore, we analysed retention of viability in L. minuta kept outside the liquid growth medium. Our data show prolonged viability of L. minuta fronds inserted between the feathers of a mallard duck. Consistently, the relative humidity between feathers ranged between 65% and 90%. Taking together evidence of entanglement and retention of L. minuta between the feathers of live ducks, with retention of viability, we consider it likely that mallards contribute to L. minuta dispersal. A recent (2011) attempt to change the previously designated type of the name of a duckweed species is discussed. Lemna punctata was first applied by Meyer in 1818 to a plant collected from South America, but original specimens have not been located. A prior neotype designation associated this name with a species native to parts of Asia, Australia and the Pacific, and widely introduced elsewhere, including South America. The species is generally treated by taxonomists in the genus Spirodela (either as S. punctata or the synonym S. oligorrhiza) or, more recently, as the sole member of the new (1999) genus Landoltia (as L. punctata). If accepted, this 2011 attempt to re-neotypify L. punctata would disrupt the names of two duckweed species as well as that of Landoltia. Nomenclatural arguments against accepting this new typification are provided, thereby supporting the continued usage of Landoltia in the sense intended by its original authors. Lemnaceae, commonly called duckweeds, comprise a diverse group of floating aquatic plants that have previously been classified into 37 species based on morphological and physiological criteria. In addition to their unique evolutionary position among angiosperms and their applications in biomonitoring, the potential of duckweeds as a novel sustainable crop for fuel and feed has recently increased interest in the study of their biodiversity and systematics. However, due to their small size and abbreviated structure, accurate typing of duckweeds based on morphology can be challenging. In the past decade, attempts to employ molecular barcoding techniques for species assignment have produced promising results; however, they have yet to be codified into a simple and quantitative protocol. A study that compiles and compares the barcode sequences within all known species of this family would help to establish the fidelity and limits of this DNA-based approach. In this work, we compared the level of conservation between over 100 strains of duckweed for two intergenic barcode sequences derived from the plastid genome. By using over 300 sequences publicly available in the NCBI database, we determined the utility of each of these two barcodes for duckweed species identification. Through sequencing of these barcodes from additional accessions, 30 of the 37 known species of duckweed could be identified with varying levels of confidence using this approach. From our analyses using this reference dataset, we also confirmed two instances where mis-assignment of species has likely occurred. Duckweeds belong to the smallest flowering plants that undergo fast vegetative growth in an aquatic environment. They are commonly used in wastewater treatment and animal feed. Whereas duckweeds have been studied at the biochemical level, their reduced morphology and wide environmental adaption had not been subjected to molecular analysis until recently. Here, we review the progress that has been made in using a DNA barcode system and the sequences of chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes to identify duckweed species at the species or population level. We also review analysis of the nuclear genome sequence of Spirodela that provides new insights into fundamental biological questions. Indeed, reduced gene families and missing genes are consistent with its compact morphogenesis, aquatic floating and suppression of juvenile-to-adult transition. Furthermore, deep RNA sequencing of Spirodela at the onset of dormancy and Landoltia in exposure of nutrient deficiency illustrate the molecular network for environmental adaption and stress response, constituting major progress towards a post-genome sequencing phase, where further functional genomic details can be explored. The plant circadian clock controls various physiological phenomena that are important for adaptation to natural day-night cycles. Many components of the circadian clock have been identified in Arabidopsis thaliana, the model plant for molecular genetic studies. Recent studies revealed evolutionary conservation of clock components in green plants. Homologues of clock-related genes have been isolated from Lemna gibba and Lemna aequinoctialis, and it has been demonstrated that these homologues function in the clock system in a manner similar to their functioning in Arabidopsis. While clock components are widely conserved, circadian phenomena display diversity even within the Lemna genus. In order to survey the full extent of diversity in circadian rhythms among duckweed plants, we characterised the circadian rhythms of duckweed by employing a semi-transient bioluminescent reporter system. Using a particle bombardment method, circadian bioluminescent reporters were introduced into nine strains representing five duckweed species: Spirodela polyrhiza, Landoltia punctata, Lemna gibba, L. aequinoctialis and Wolffia columbiana. We then monitored luciferase (luc+) reporter activities driven by At CCA1, Zm UBQ1 or Ca MV35S promoters under entrainment and free-running conditions. Under entrainment, At CCA1::luc+ showed similar diurnal rhythms in all strains. This suggests that the mechanism of biological timing under day-night cycles is conserved throughout the evolution of duckweeds. Under free-running conditions, we observed circadian rhythms of At CCA1::luc+, Zm UBQ1::luc+ and Ca MV35S::luc+. The application potential of four duckweed strains from four genera, Wolffia globosa 0222, Lemna japonica 0223, Landoltia punctata 0224 and Spirodela polyrhiza 0225, were compared in four parallel pilot-scale wastewater treatment systems for more than 1 year. The results indicated that each duckweed strain had unique potential advantages. Unlike L. japonica 0223 and La. punctata 0224, which grow throughout the year, S. polyrhiza 0225 and W. globosa 0222 do not survive cold weather. For year round performance, L. japonica 0223 was best not only in dry biomass production (6.10 g·m−2·day−1), but also in crude protein (35.50%), total amino acid (26.83%) and phosphorus (1.38%) content, plus recovery rates of total nitrogen ( TN), total phosphorus ( TP) and CO2 (0.31, 0.085 and 7.76 g·m−2·day−1, respectively) and removal rates of TN and TP (0.66 and 0.089 g·m−2·day−1, respectively). This strongly demonstrates that L. japonica 0223 performed best in wastewater treatment and protein biomass production. Under nutrient starvation conditions, La. punctata 0224 had the highest starch content (45.84%), dry biomass production (4.81 g·m−2·day−1) and starch accumulation (2.9 g·m−2·day−1), making it best for starch biomass production. W. globosa 0222 and S. polyrhiza 0225 showed increased flavonoid biomass production, with higher total flavonoid content (5.85% and 4.22%, respectively) and high dominant flavonoids (>60%). Nuclear DNA sequence data are essential for obtaining a complete understanding of plant species relationships, yet these data have been conspicuously absent from phylogenetic analyses of Lemnaceae (duckweeds). Using a modified Sanger sequencing protocol, we obtained DNA sequences of duckweed nuclear ribosomal regions, including 18S and 26S r DNA genes, the external transcribed spacer ( ETS) and the frequently used internal transcribed spacer ( ITS). After obtaining sequence data for all Lemnaceae species, we ascertained that prior difficulty in sequencing the ITS regions likely resulted from extremely rigid secondary structures, precipitated by a high proportion of G/ C nucleotides. In phylogenetic analyses, nuclear ribosomal data largely supported relationships that had been inferred using chloroplast DNA sequence data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In evolutionary biology, the term 'Darwinian fitness' refers to the lifetime reproductive success of an individual within a population of conspecifics. The idea of a 'Darwinian Demon' emerged from this concept and is defined here as an organism that commences reproduction almost immediately after birth, has a maximum fitness, and lives forever. It has been argued that duckweeds (sub-family Lemnoideae, order Alismatales), a group containing five genera and 34 species of small aquatic monocotyledonous plants with a reduced body plan, can be interpreted as examples of 'Darwinian Demons'. Here we focus on the species Spirodela polyrhiza (Great duckweed) and show that these miniaturised aquatic angiosperms display features that fit the definition of the hypothetical organism that we will call a 'Darwin-Wallace Demon' in recognition of the duel proponents of evolution by natural selection. A quantitative analysis (log-log bivariate plot of annual growth in dry biomass versus standing dry body mass of various green algae and land plants) revealed that duckweeds are thus far the most rapidly growing angiosperms in proportion to their body mass. In light of this finding, we discuss the disposable soma and metabolic optimising theories, summarise evidence for and against the proposition that the Lemnoideae (family Araceae) reflect an example of reductive evolution, and argue that, under real-world conditions (environmental constraints and other limitations), 'Darwin-Wallace Demons' cannot exist, although the concept remains useful in much the same way that the Hardy-Weinberg law does. The performance of duckweed and algal systems in removing fecal bacteria, organic matter, and nutrients was evaluated in three full-scale ponds operating in series. Trucks collected septage from holding tanks and discharged it into the system, daily. The inflow rates varied between the warm and the cold season. Duckweed and algae naturally colonized the ponds in two successive periods of 10 and 13 months, respectively. Environmental conditions were determined at various pond depths. Without harvesting, the duckweed system was neutral and anoxic. Alkaline and oversaturation conditions were observed in the algal system. The overall removals of 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, total nitrogen removal, and orthophosphate (ortho-PO43-) ranged from 94 to 97, 62 to 84, 68 to 74, and 0 to 26%, respectively. Formation of turions, the vegetative perennation organs, plays an important role in the survival strategy of Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleiden. Turion formation [quantified as number of turions formed per frond; specific turion yield (SY)] was investigated in 27 clones collected from a wide geographical range. The Pearson correlation was tested with (1) duration of growing season (monthly average temperature of ≥10°C), (2) relative growth rate of the fronds, (3) longitude and latitude, and (4) several climatic parameters, in all possible single and multiple regressions. All single coefficients of determination were below 0.10. The highest correlation (R2 = 0.61; adjusted for the number of explaining variables 0.54) was found in a multiple linear regression with the following five parameters: average temperatures over the year and during the growing season, duration of the growing season and precipitation over the year and during the growth period. All these parameters were shown to have significant contributions. This equation was used successfully to predict the SY of five newly isolated clones. Finally, on the basis of all 32 clones the following conclusions were drawn: The mean annual temperature has the highest impact. It is suggested that lower temperatures decrease the survival rate of turions and that adaptation refers to increasing SY. The different levels of SY in the clones (ranging from SY = 0.22 to 5.9) were detected even after several years of in vitro cultivation. This study was carried out to investigate the potential of duckweed ( Lemna minor L.) for bioremediation of C.I. Basic Red 46 (BR46) solution. Our results revealed the notable ability of the plant species in biological degradation of BR46. The reusability of the plant in long-term repetitive operations was also confirmed. The decolorization efficiency was extremely dependent on different operational parameters such as initial dye concentration, pH, temperature, and amount of plant. Interestingly, activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase as antioxidant enzymes were increased in different concentrations of the dye. In contrast, catalase activity declined in duckweed plants exposed to the dye. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to predict the biological decolorization efficiency. Novel protein sources (like insects, algae, duckweed, and rapeseed) are expected to enter the European feed and food market as replacers for animal-derived proteins. However, food safety aspects of these novel protein sources are not well-known. The aim of this article is to review the state of the art on the safety of major novel protein sources for feed and food production, in particular insects, algae (microalgae and seaweed), duckweed, and rapeseed. Potential hazards for these protein sources are described and EU legislative requirements as regard to food and feed safety are explained. Potential hazards may include a range of contaminants, like heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticide residues, as well as pathogens. Some safety aspects of novel protein sources are intrinsic to the product, but many potential hazards can also be due to production methods and processing conditions. These aspects should be considered in advance during product development. European law is unclear on several issues regarding the use of novel protein sources in food and feed products. For food product applications, the most important question for food producers is whether or not the product is considered a novel food. One of the major unclarities for feed applications is whether or not products with insects are considered animal-derived products or not. Due to the unclarities in European law, it is not always clear which Regulation and maximum levels for contaminants apply.
