Objective Methods Results Conclusion The aim of this pilot study was to establish a satisfactory, scientific approach to effectively compare quantitative measurements of various ocular surface parameters before and after surgical treatment in dogs suffering from distichiasis.An ophthalmic examination was conducted on 12 dogs (23 eyes) before and after surgical treatments for distichiasis, at four different time points, (t0 = before surgery, t1 = 1–2 h after surgery, t2 = 1 week after surgery, t3 = 1 month after surgery, and t4 = 6 months after surgery) between 2021 and 2022, and analyzed retrospectively. The examination included Schirmer tear test‐1 (STT‐1), interferometry, noninvasive tear film break‐up time (NIBUT), tear meniscus size (TMS), and meibography.No statistically significant changes were found in STT‐1 (t0: 22.2 ± 6.5 mm, t2: 22.5 ± 5.7 mm, t3: 20.8 ± 5.1 mm, and t4: 22.6 mm ± 4.8 mm) before and after surgery. Mean interferometry scores showed a slight, not statistically significant, decrease from t0 to t3 and t4 (t0: 2.1 ± 0.8, t1: 2.1 ± 0.7, t2: 2.1 ± 0.9, t3: 1.8 ± 0.6, and t4: 1.9 ± 1.1). Mean NIBUT did not change significantly between time points (t0: 3.9 ± 1.3 s, t1: 4.0 ± 1.3 s, t2: 4.0 ± 1.4 s, t3: 3.5 ± 0.7 s, and t4: 3.5 ± 0.9 s). TMS showed a slight, not statistically significant increase (t0: 0.5 ± 0.3 mm, t1: 0.5 ± 0.3, t2: 0.5 ± 0.3 mm, t3: 0.6 ± 0.2 mm, and t4: 0.7 ± 0.3 mm). There were no changes in the gross morphology of the meibomian glands (MG).This pilot study could not detect a negative effect of different forms of treatment of distichiasis on the precorneal tear film parameters in dogs. Purpose Methods Results Conclusion To describe the use of coronofrontal rhytidectomy (CFR) for the treatment of severe pseudoptosis and superior entropion in dogs, and to provide guidelines for the selection of surgical technique depending on presentation.A review of medical records of dogs that underwent rhytidectomy from 2002 to 2023 was carried out, including signalment, clinical signs, type of rhytidectomy, concurrent surgical techniques, re‐interventions, post‐operative complications, follow‐up time, and outcome.Twenty dogs with a median age of 5.1 years were included in this study. English Cocker Spaniel was the most common breed (8 dogs:40%) and males were overrepresented (13 dogs: 65%). Besides pseudoptosis and visual impairment (100%), the other most common clinical signs were entropion and/or ectropion (19 dogs: 95%), conjunctivitis (17 dogs: 85%), euryblepharon (12 dogs: 60%) and non‐ulcerative keratitis (10 dogs: 50%). CFR was performed in 12 dogs (60%), frontal rhytidectomy in 5 (25%), coronal in 2 (10%), and modified shared in 1 (5%). Concurrent surgical techniques were performed in 17 dogs (85%), being lateral canthoplasty (13 dogs; 65%), and Celsus–Hotz (10 dogs; 50%) the most common. The median follow‐up time was 115 days with no complications and good outcomes reported in all dogs. At last re‐recheck, complete correction of the eyelid positioning was obtained in 92% (11/12) and 87.5% (7/8) of the cases that underwent CFR and other rhytidectomy techniques, respectively.CFR is an effective surgical treatment for severe pseudoptosis and superior entropion in dogs. A six‐year‐old atopic boxer presented with pigmented viral plaques on the interdigital spaces and pinnae following treatment with potent topical glucocorticoids. Adrenalectomy is the gold standard for canine adrenal tumours, but not always recommended due to patient age, underlying conditions and perioperative mortality. Ethanol ablation is an alternative in human medicine for poor surgical candidates. A 13‐year‐old neutered female toy‐poodle with hypercortisolism presented with severe haematuria. Ultrasonography revealed left adrenal and right kidney tumours. Due to high surgical risk, simultaneous laparotomic right nephroureterectomy and ethanol ablation of the left adrenal tumour were performed. Post‐ethanol injection complications included transient hypertension and arrhythmia, which resolved spontaneously. The adrenal tumour size decreased within 2.5 months, and cortisol levels normalised within 8 days, remaining stable for 12 months. No hypercortisolism signs were observed without trilostane until death from renal insufficiency. Autopsy showed that the ablated left adrenal gland was an adrenocortical tumour and had shrunk. Background: Nuciferine (NUC), a natural compound extracted from lotus leaves, has been proven to have anti‐obesity effects. However, the development and application of NUC as an anti‐obesity drug in dogs are hindered due to its poor water solubility and low bioavailability. Objective: To promote the development of NUC‐related products for anti‐obesity in dogs, this study prepared NUC into a liposome formulation and evaluated its characteristics, pharmacokinetics in dogs, and anti‐obesity effects on high‐fat diet dogs. Methods: NUC liposomes were prepared by the ethanol injection method, using NUC, egg lecithin, and β‐sitosterol as raw materials. The characteristics and release rate in vitro of liposomes were evaluated by particle size analyser and dialysis method, respectively. The pharmacokinetics in dogs after oral administration of NUC‐liposomes was carried out by the high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Moreover, we investigated the anti‐obesity effect of NUC‐liposomes on obese dogs fed with a high‐fat diet. Results: NUC‐liposome was successfully prepared, with an EE of (79.31 ± 1.06)%, a particle size of (81.25 ± 3.14) nm, a zeta potential of (–18.75 ± 0.23) mV, and a PDI of 0.175 ± 0.031. The cumulative release rate in vitro of NUC from NUC‐liposomes was slower than that of NUC. The T1/2 and relative bioavailability of NUC‐liposomes in dogs increased, and CL reduced compared with NUC. In addition, the preventive effect of NUC‐liposomes on obesity in high‐fat diet dogs is stronger than that of NUC. Liquid biopsy for circulating tumour cell (CTC) detection is generally unexplored in veterinary medicine. Dogs with highly aggressive and heterogeneous tumours, such as oral malignant melanoma (OMM), could benefit from studies involving size‐based isolation methods for CTCs, as they do not depend on specific antibodies. This pilot study aimed to detect CTCs from canine OMM using Isolation by Size of Epithelial Tumor Cells (ISET), a microfiltration methodology, followed by immunocytochemistry (ICC) with Melan‐A, PNL2, and S100 antibodies. Ten canine patients diagnosed by histopathology and confirmed as OMM by immunohistochemistry were enrolled, their prognostic data was assessed, and blood samples were collected for CTC analysis. Results have shown the detection of intact cells in 9/10 patients. ICC has shown 3/9 Melan‐A‐positive, 3/9 PNL2‐positive, and 8/9 S100‐positive patients, confirming the importance of opting for a multimarker assay. A significant number of negative‐stained CTCs were found, suggesting their high heterogeneity in circulation. Microemboli stained with either PNL2 or S100 were found in a patient with a high isolated cell count and advanced clinical stage. Preliminary statistical analysis shows a significant difference in CTC count between patients with and without lymph node metastasis (p <.05), which may correlate with tumour metastatic potential. However, we recommend further studies with more extensive sampling to confirm this result. This pilot study is the first report of intact CTC detection in canine OMM and the first application of ISET in veterinary medicine, opening new possibilities for liquid biopsy studies in canine OMM and other tumours. Multiagent chemotherapy is considered the most effective treatment for canine high‐grade lymphoma; however, due to cost and time requirements, single‐agent protocols have also been described. The aim of our study was to evaluate the outcome and prognostic factors of dogs affected by multicentric lymphoma treated with lomustine and prednisolone as first‐line treatment. Cases of medium‐large‐cell multicentric lymphoma treated with lomustine and prednisolone were included in the study. Response to therapy, time to progression (TTP), median disease‐free interval (MDFI) and median survival time (MST) were retrospectively described. Thirty cases were included. Eleven (36.67%) were T cell, 11 (36.67%) were B cell and 8 (26.66%) had unknown immunophenotype. The overall response rate (RR) was 87%, with 15 patients achieving CR (50%) and 11 patients PR (37%). The median TTP, MDFI and MST were 42, 63 and 90 days, respectively. The only factor significantly associated with MDFI and MST was the stage. Dogs with multicentric lymphoma treated with lomustine and prednisolone have lower RR, TTP, MDFI and MST compared with dogs receiving multiagent protocols. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a treatment modality that combines the electroporation of cell membranes with chemotherapy to facilitate the transport of non‐permeant molecules into cells. Several canine and feline studies have shown promising results, suggesting that ECT can be a valid adjuvant or alternative treatment option for some tumours. The precise cause of HS/DCS is still unknown. The relatively low incidence in humans urges for an animal model with a high incidence to accelerate knowledge about genetics and optimal treatment of HS/DCS. Namely, until now, the therapies targeting genetic variants are still more experimental and sparsely used, while consensus is missing. In addition, the literature about variants and possible mutation‐targeted therapies in humans and dogs consists mainly of case reports scattered throughout the literature. Therefore, an overview is provided of all currently known genetic variants in humans and dogs with HS/DCS and its subtypes, their possible mutation‐targeted therapies, their efficacy, and a contemplation about the future. Several genetic variants have already been discovered in HS/DCS, of which many are shared between canine and human HS/DCS, but unique variants exist as well. Unfortunately, none of these already found variants seem to be specifically causal for HS/DCS, and the puzzle of its landscape of genetic variation is far from complete. The use of mutation‐targeted therapies, including MAPK‐/MEK‐inhibitors and the future use of PTPN11‐, CDK4/6‐ and PD‐1‐inhibitors, seems to be promising for these specific variants, but clearly, clinical trials are needed to determine optimal inhibitors and standardised protocols for all variants. It can be concluded that molecular analysis for variants and subsequent mutation‐targeted therapy are an essential addition to cancer diagnostics and therapy. Meibomian gland dysfunction is a disease affecting meibomian glands with inflammatory features. Sebaceous and meibomian glands share anatomical, physiological and embryological similarities. The involvement of meibomian glands in dogs with SA is currently unknown.To evaluate meibomian glands in dogs affected by SA and compare them with healthy dogs.Eighteen dogs were enrolled. Nine dogs with SA were retrospectively identified from clinical records and represented the case group. Nine healthy, breed‐ and age‐matched dogs were prospectively enrolled in the control group.Both groups underwent dermatological examination, Schirmer tear test‐1 (STT‐1), tear meniscus height (TMH), slit‐lamp biomicroscopy, interferometry (INT) and noncontact infrared meibography (NIM).One third of SA dogs presented subepithelial crystalline opacities. No significant difference between groups was observed in TMH (p = 0.944) and STT‐1 values (p = 0.066). INT (p = 0.016) and NIM grades (p = 0.010) were significantly higher and lower in the SA group compared to the control group, respectively. INT values decreased with age (η = 0.930), while NIM scores (η = 0.935) increased.Clinical Relevance: Subepithelial crystalline opacities in SA dogs might reflect a reduced tear film quality. In the absence of standardised methods, INT and NIM proved to be noninvasive and useful methods to examine meibomian glands. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the combination of a water‐soluble calcium (Ca) source (CaCl2) with a water‐soluble phosphorus (P) source (NaH2PO4*2H2O, diet soluble, SOL) in comparison to a water‐insoluble P source (CaHPO4*2H2O, diet insoluble, INS) on apparent digestibility and renal excretion of Ca and P in dogs. The Ca intake was 226 mg/kg bodyweight (bw), the Ca/P ratio 1.9/1 in SOL and 2.0/1 in INS. The percentage of Ca from CaCl2 was 60% in SOL and 33% in INS. Eight adult Foxhound‐crossbred dogs FBI, (3–5 years, bw 24–32 kg) were available. Standard digestion trials were carried out (10 days adaptation, 5 days total faecal collection). Spontaneously excreted urine was collected pre‐ and postprandially. In vitro water solubility of P in the mineral premixes was determined. The Ca digestibility was negative in both trials without significant differences between the groups. Apparent P digestibility was increased in group SOL (26% vs. 20% in INS). In both groups, P content in urine was higher pre‐ compared to postprandial, with higher concentrations in group SOL. The same was true for the P/Crea ratio. The water solubility of P in the mineral premixes used in the trials showed considerable differences: The P in premix INS was insoluble in water after 1 and after 90 min. By contrast, the P in the premix SOL was highly soluble (98%) after 1 minute. After 90 min, however, the P solubility decreased to 43%, suggesting the formation of insoluble CaP salts, presumably from CaCl2 and NaH2PO4*2H2O. In conclusion, in the present study, apparent Ca digestibility in dogs was not affected by the solubility of Ca and P, while P digestibility and renal P excretion increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Objectives Animals Methods Results Conclusions and Clinical Importance Effects of the renin‐angiotensin‐aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors enalapril and telmisartan on circulating RAAS in dogs with proteinuric chronic kidney disease (pCKD) are undescribed.To characterize the RAAS in untreated dogs with pCKD compared to healthy, life‐stage‐ and sex‐matched controls, and in dogs with pCKD after 30 days of treatment with enalapril or telmisartan.Dogs with pCKD (n = 36) and healthy controls (n = 20).Retrospective study of banked samples and previously collected data. Day 0 serum equilibrium concentrations of angiotensin I, II, III, IV, 1‐5, and 1‐7, and aldosterone, and urinary aldosterone‐to‐creatinine ratio (UACR) from pCKD dogs were compared to values on day 30 of treatment with enalapril (0.5 mg/kg PO q12) or telmisartan (1 mg/kg PO q24h) and to those of healthy dogs. Data were analyzed using linear mixed models.Compared with healthy dogs, pCKD dogs had significantly higher Ang I, III, 1‐5, and 1‐7 concentrations, and UACR. Relative to pretreatment values, day 30 Ang II concentrations were significantly increased and decreased in telmisartan‐ and enalapril‐treated pCKD dogs, respectively (both P < .001). Mean (95% confidence interval) percentage change from pretreatment value in serum Ang 1‐7 concentration was significantly greater in telmisartan‐ (753% [489%‐1134%]) versus enalapril‐treated (149% [69%‐268%]) dogs (P < .001). Serum aldosterone decreased with treatment (P = .02 for enalapril, P < .001 for telmisartan), with no difference between groups at day 30.Circulating RAAS activity is higher in dogs with pCKD. ABSTRACT Oral artemisinin has antiparasitic activity and may help improve treatment success rates in dogs infected with Babesia gibsoni. However, these artemisinin products are unapproved and unregulated botanical supplements. They have not been evaluated for safety and efficacy or for strength, purity, or quality compared with a reference standard. Before considering these products for a clinical study, we evaluated the strength of four suppliers of artemisinin capsules using an high‐performance liquid chromatography method validated in our laboratory. We found that the four artemisinin‐labeled products that were tested had high within product and between product variability in capsule strength compared with the stated capsule strength on the product label. No products met the acceptance criteria of the United States Pharmacopeia and International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) as well as the criteria adapted by the authors. One product had no detectable artemisinin, and the other three products were much higher than the stated label strength. The results of this study reinforce the importance of testing unapproved and unregulated supplements before recommending a supplement for clinical use in dogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Objectives Animals Methods Results Conclusions and Clinical Importance Dogs with chronic inflammatory enteropathy (CIE) are typically classified into food‐responsive enteropathy (FRE), antibiotic‐responsive enteropathy (ARE), immunomodulator‐responsive enteropathy (IRE), and nonresponsive enteropathy (NRE) based on response to therapy(ies). Reassessment of initial categorization (especially IRE and NRE) is lacking.Investigate validity of categorization scheme when reassessed at least 1 year after diagnosis.Sixty client‐owned with CIE.Retrospective study. Clinical information was gathered from records and owners from time of diagnosis (TD), time of initial response (TIR), and at least 1 year after diagnosis (T≥1y). Category change was defined as a switch between groups.Median disease activity index (CIBDAI) at TD was 9 and reduced significantly to 1 at T≥1y (P < .0001). At TIR, dogs were categorized as: FRE 27/60 (45%, 95% binomial confidence intervals [CI], 0.32‐0.58), IRE 30/60 (50%, CI 0.37‐0.63), ARE 0/60 (0%), NRE 3/60 (5%, CI −0.01 to 0.11). Seventeen of 27 (63%) FRE dogs had previously had at least 1 unsuccessful diet trial. At T≥1y, categorization changed to FRE 44/60 (73%, CI 0.62‐0.85), IRE 14/60 (23%, CI 0.13‐0.34), ARE 0/60 (0%), NRE 2/60 (3%, CI −0.01 to 0.08). Group changes were found for 24/60 (40%) dogs, largest change was from IRE to FRE (19/24, 79%). Immunosuppressive dosages were administered as sole treatment in 1/30 (3%) IRE dogs at TIR.Chronic inflammatory enteropathy categorization based on initial response to therapy needs reassessment after 1 year. Frequent change from IRE to FRE suggests that dogs initially categorized as IRE might have been initially categorized as FRE if multiple dietary trials had been performed. Background Objectives Materials and Methods Results Conclusions and Clinical Relevance Silver sulfadiazine (SSD) is commonly formulated into otic preparations to treat otitis externa, although evidence of stability and antimicrobial efficacy with long‐term storage is lacking.To evaluate the effect of storage time on chemical stability and in vitro antimicrobial activity of SSD diluted in sterile water, including two 1% suspensions using SSD pharmaceutical‐grade powder stored at room temperature (RT) in plastic or sterile glass bottles, and a 1:9 dilution using prescription SSD 1% cream stored at RT in a sterile glass bottle.Liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) assessed chemical stability. Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole‐susceptible and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole‐resistant strains of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (SP), meticillin‐resistant (MR) SP, S. schleiferi (SS), MRSS, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis and Escherichia coli evaluated by 24 h time–kill analysis assessed in vitro antimicrobial efficacy. Each assessment was performed at zero, one, three and six months of storage.LC–MS/MS showed no significant change in concentration over time for any suspension. When adjusted for time and species/strain, all SSD suspensions showed significant reductions in colony forming units (cfu)/mL at 24 h (p < 0.001). Including all suspensions, a bactericidal effect (minimum 3‐log cfu/mL reduction at 24 h) occurred against 94% of total isolates, with failure against 33 of 552 isolates (6%). Bactericidal failure was more likely with the cream‐based suspension (p < 0.05) and at six months (p < 0.01).Powder‐based and cream‐based SSD/sterile water suspensions showed no significant change in concentration and demonstrated in vitro antimicrobial activity for six months. Objective Animals Studied Procedure Results Conclusion To compare characteristics and treatment outcomes of spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects (SCCEDs) in brachycephalic non‐Boxers and Boxers. We hypothesized that brachycephalic non‐Boxers develop SCCEDs at a younger age and develop complications more frequently than Boxers.Retrospective review of medical records of brachycephalic dogs treated for SCCEDs between January 2018 and December 2022 in multiple ophthalmology referral centers in the UK.Data recorded included breed, age, time of onset, treatment prior to referral, treatment at referral, time to heal, need for further procedures, and complications.A total of 464 SCCEDs in 420 dogs were included composed of 173 Boxers with 200 SCCEDs and 247 brachycephalic non‐Boxer dogs with 264 SCCEDs. Boxers were significantly older (median 8.2, range 4.5–12.7 years) than brachycephalic non‐Boxers (median 7.2, range 1.6–15.9 years) (p < .001). The first treatment (cotton‐tipped applicator [CTA] debridement, diamond burr debridement, superficial keratectomy, grid keratotomy, punctate keratotomy, or combinations of these) selected was significantly different between groups (p < .001). Healing, excluding cases addressed by CTA debridement, following the first procedure was significantly more successful in Boxers (p = .049). Excluding cases addressed by CTA debridement, 9.6% of SCCEDs in Boxers (20/200) and 13.4% (32/239) of non‐Boxers required more than one procedure. In the non‐Boxer group, 9.5% (25/264) developed complications, contrasting with 4% (8/200) in the Boxer group. Non‐Boxers were more likely to develop complications after the first treatment (p = .006).Non‐Boxer brachycephalic dogs develop SCCEDs younger than Boxers. ABSTRACT Neutropenia is a common chemotherapy‐associated adverse event (AE) in dogs and a significant cause of decreased relative dose intensity. Dose reductions (DRs) and treatment delays (TDs) are frequently applied to decrease the risk of further neutropenic events (NEs) and AEs, but there is no standardised approach. The two main objectives of this retrospective study were to determine: (1) the failure rate of a 10% DR to prevent a subsequent inadequate absolute neutrophil count (ANC), defined as a nadir ANC <0.75 × 109/L or pretreatment ANC <1.5 × 109/L; and (2) if the duration of TDs due to pretreatment neutropenia affects the occurrence of subsequent NEs. A total of 1056 chemotherapy treatments were recorded for 128 dogs that developed at least one NE. In 75 of 124 (60.5%, 95% CI: 51.2%–69%) evaluable NEs, a nadir ANC of ≥0.75 × 109/L and pretreatment ANC of ≥1.5 × 109/L were achieved after a single 10% chemotherapy DR, while a 10% DR failed to prevent a subsequent inadequate ANC in the remaining 49/124 (39.5%, 95% CI: 30.1%–48.3%). The only variable associated with failure was the drug prescribed. DR failure occurred in 22/39 (56.4%, 95% CI: 40.9%–70.6%) lomustine DRs, 14/27 (51.9%, 95% CI: 33.9%–69.2%) cyclophosphamide DRs, but only 2/22 (9.1%, 95% CI: 2.5%–27.8%) doxorubicin DRs and 2/24 (8.3%, 95% CI: 2.3%–25.8%) vincristine DRs. Despite extensive research in humans, limited data exist on CRE in companion animals, with a lack of nationwide prevalence estimates.To assess the occurrence and trends of CRE in cats and dogs across the United States by analyzing 4 years of commercial antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) data.Between 2019 and 2022, 477 426 ASTs were conducted on Enterobacterales isolates against imipenem. Isolates were derived from 379 598 dogs and 97 828 cats. Animal origin was not disclosed.In this retrospective study, antimicrobial susceptibility test data from IDEXX Laboratories were analyzed. Analysis included resistance estimations to imipenem stratified by sampling site, an assessment of resistance patterns over time and location, and the application of space‐time cluster analysis to identify potential outbreaks. Antibiograms were produced for carbapenem‐resistant isolates.Susceptibility to imipenem was high, at 98.86%. Temporal analysis indicated stability in susceptibility, with an unexplained reduction in susceptible isolates in June 2019. Spatial analysis identified 2 high‐risk clusters along the Western Coast (relative risk [RR]: 23.26; P < .001) and in Texas (RR: 10.72; P < .001) in that month. Three other clusters were found, in Missouri (RR: 39.55; P = .038), Florida (RR: 4.53; P < .001), and New York (RR: 9.20; P < .001).CRE are present at a low prevalence in dogs and cats across the United States. Mycophenolate is an effective steroid‐sparing treatment option for use in dogs with inflammatory skin diseases.To evaluate whether once‐daily modified‐release mycophenolate (OKV‐1001) is safe and effective for treating moderate‐to‐severe canine AD.Client‐owned atopic dogs (n = 9) were enrolled.In an open‐label multicentre pilot study, OKV‐1001 (30 mg/kg every 24 h) was given orally for ≤84 days. Concomitant tapering doses of glucocorticoids were administered up to Day (D)28. Clinicians assessed Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index, 4th iteration (CADESI‐04) on D0, D14, D28, D56 and D84. Body weight and clinical pathological parameters were measured at baseline and at the end of the study.Treatment with OKV‐1001 combined with glucocorticoids significantly reduced the severity of AD within two weeks in seven of nine (77.8%) dogs. The mean percentage change from baseline in the CADESI‐04 score was 29% (p = 0.009) at D14 (n = 9), 39% (p = 0.008) at D28 (n = 9) and 49% (p = 0.03) at D56 (n = 7) at which point glucocorticoids had been withdrawn. In two dogs the improvement in CADESI‐04 was 62% and 23% (respectively) on D84. No significant adverse events including clinical pathological findings were reported.Modified‐release mycophenolate (OKV‐1001) may represent a promising alternative treatment option for dogs with moderate‐to‐severe AD. Ichthyoses comprise a large heterogeneous group of skin disorders, characterized by generalized scaly and hyperkeratotic skin. We investigated a miniature poodle with early onset generalized scaling, dry and irregularly thickened skin, paw pad hyperkeratosis and abnormalities in hair and teeth. The clinical signs of ichthyosis were confirmed by histopathological examination, which revealed mild epidermal hyperplasia and lamellar orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis. A hereditary condition was suspected and a genetic investigation was initiated. We sequenced the whole genome of the affected dog and searched for potentially causative variants in functional candidate genes for the observed phenotype. The analysis revealed a heterozygous in‐frame deletion in DSP, NC_049256.1:g.8804542_8804544del resulting from a de novo mutation event as evidenced by genotyping leukocyte DNA from both parents. The 3 bp deletion is predicted to remove one aspartic acid without disrupting the open reading frame (XM_038584124.1:c.1821_1823del, XP_038440052.1:p.(Asp608del)). The DSP gene encodes desmoplakin, a desmosomal plaque protein, responsible for cell–cell adhesion to provide resistance to mechanical stress in epidermal and cardiac tissues. We hypothesize that the deletion of one amino acid in the N‐terminal globular head domain acts in a dominant negative manner and thus impairs the proper connection with other proteins. Several variants in DSP in humans and cattle have been described to result in different phenotypes associated with hair and skin abnormalities, sometimes in combination with variable cardiac and/or dental manifestations. Background Objectives Animals Methods Results Conclusions and Clinical Importance Occurrence of low blood taurine concentrations (B‐TauC) and predisposing factors to taurine deficiency in English Cocker Spaniels (ECS) are incompletely understood.Investigate the occurrence of low B‐TauC in a Swedish population of ECS and evaluate the association between B‐TauC and dog characteristics, clinical variables, and diet composition.One‐hundred eighty privately owned ECS.Dogs were prospectively recruited and underwent physical examination, blood analyses, and echocardiographic and ophthalmic examinations. Dogs with clinical signs of congestive heart failure (CHF) also underwent thoracic radiography. Taurine concentrations were analyzed in plasma (EDTA and heparin) and whole blood. Diets consumed by the dogs at the time of the examination were analyzed for dietary taurine‐ (D‐TauC), cysteine‐ (D‐CysC), and methionine concentrations (D‐MetC).Fifty‐three of 180 dogs (29%) had low B‐TauC, of which 13 (25%) dogs had clinical and radiographic signs of CHF, increased echocardiographic left ventricular (LV) dimensions and volumes, and impaired LV systolic function. Five (9%) dogs with low B‐TauC had retinal abnormalities. Dietary MetC, dietary animal protein source (red/white meat), and age were associated with B‐TauC in the final multivariable regression model (P < .001, R2adj = .39).Low B‐TauC suggests that taurine deficiency may play a role in the development of myocardial failure and CHF in ECS. Although the utilization of techniques in veterinary medicine is increasing, a standard protocol has not yet been established.Assessment of a sedation‐awakening EEG protocol in dogs.Electroencephalography examination was performed in a research colony of 6 nonepileptic dogs (control [C]) and 12 dogs with epilepsy admitted to the clinic because of the epileptic seizures.It was a prospective study with retrospective control. Dogs with epilepsy were divided into 2 equal groups, wherein EEG acquisition was performed using a “sedation” protocol (IE‐S, n = 6) and a “sedation‐awakening” protocol (IE‐SA, n = 6). All animals were sedated using medetomidine. In IE‐SA group, sedation was reversed 5 minutes after commencing the EEG recording by injecting atipamezole IM. Type of background activity (BGA) and presence of EEG‐defined epileptiform discharges (EDs) were evaluated blindly. Statistical significance was set at P > 0.05.Epileptiform discharges were found in 1 of 6 of the dogs in group C, 4 of 6 of the dogs in IE‐S group, and 5 of 6 of the dogs in IE‐SA group. A significantly greater number of EDs (spikes, P = .0109; polyspikes, P = .0109; sharp waves, P = .01) were detected in Phase 2 in animals subjected to the “sedation‐awakening” protocol, whereas there was no statistically significant greater number of discharges in sedated animals.A “sedation‐awakening” EEG protocol could be of value for ambulatory use if repeated EEG recordings and monitoring of epilepsy in dogs is needed. Purpose Introduction Methods Results Conclusions To present a novel modified medial canthoplasty (MCP) technique, the application in 601 dogs (1180 eyes), and a review of the early postoperative complications related to the technique.Macroblepharon and nasal entropion is a common presentation in many brachycephalic dog breeds promoting chronic keratitis. The previously described MCP techniques limit the medial shortening of the eyelids to the location of the lacrimal puncta. A novel technique was developed allowing for a more extensive eyelid shortening nasally.The modification of the here described technique includes the longitudinal splitting of the lacrimal canaliculi allowing for an extensive shortening of the lids beyond the lacrimal puncta. Records of 601 dogs which underwent the modified MCP were reviewed regarding breed, indications for surgery, follow‐up, and early postoperative surgical complications. Descriptive statistics were applied.Six hundred one dogs (1180 eyes) were included in this study. Twenty‐four different breeds underwent the simplified MCP with the Pug (n = 403) being the most represented breed. Indications were macropalpebral fissure, medial entropion, pigmentary keratitis, trichiasis by haired caruncle, strabismus after globe prolapse, and facial nerve paralysis. The overall complication rate was 1.01% (12/1180) and consisted of wound dehiscence 0.59% (7/1180), corneal ulceration caused by suture material 0.25% (3/1180), and wound infection (2/1180). This practice can contribute to unwanted corticosteroid‐associated morbidity and may be unnecessary.Determine whether long‐term corticosteroid dependency can be minimized by use of succinct prednisone tapering.Fifty‐five pet dogs undergoing brain tumor irradiation.Nineteen dogs were treated using a “rapid‐taper” protocol wherein corticosteroid dose reduction began 0 to 20 days after completing RT. Outcomes were compared with a retrospectively studied control group (“slow‐taper”; N = 36 dogs) in which corticosteroids were tapered more slowly according to individual clinician recommendations.Patient demographics were similar between groups. Mean time to lowest prednisone dose was 41 days postirradiation in the rapid‐taper group and 117 days in the slow‐taper group (P = .003). In the rapid‐taper group, 15 of 19 dogs (84%) were completely tapered off prednisone, vs 18 of 36 (50%) in the slow‐taper group (P = .04). Rates at which corticosteroids had to be reinstituted later were similar for the 2 groups (approximately 1 in 3 dogs). Adverse effect rates were similar for the 2 groups. Although no comparable questionnaire‐derived data were available for the “slow‐taper” group, overall and neurologic quality of life remained stable after RT in the rapid‐taper group.For many dogs, lengthy courses of PO prednisone are avoidable after intracranial RT. ABSTRACT Canine cutaneous mast cell tumours (MCTs) are currently staged based on the World Health Organization (WHO) classification, which has remained unchanged since its initial formulation. Our study aimed to assess the reliability of a novel pTNM staging system, which incorporates tumour extent (T), lymph node involvement (N), presence of distant metastases (M) and the two‐tier histologic grade. We analysed medical records of dogs with one or more cutaneous/subcutaneous completely staged MCT, undergoing tumour excision with lymphadenectomy, unless distant metastases were present, in which cases, medical therapy was administered. Dogs were categorized into three stages: I (T1‐2N0M0), II (T1‐2N1M0) and III (distant metastases). Stages I and II were further divided based on histologic grade into ‘low’ and ‘high’. Substage b was defined as the presence of tumour diameter of ≥3 cm and/or ulceration. Of 226 dogs, 87 (38.5%) were in Stage I (I‐low, n = 75; I‐high, n = 12), 107 (47.3%) in Stage II (II‐low, n = 59; II‐high, n = 48), and 32 (14.2%) in Stage III. The newly proposed staging system was able to significantly stratify the population for both time to progression and tumour‐specific survival. Compared to Stage I‐low, the risk of progression increased significantly for Stage I‐high (18.3 times), Stage II‐low (8.5 times), Stage II‐high (41.5 times) and Stage III (110.3 times). The staging system was highly prognostic for both cutaneous and subcutaneous MCTs. The proliferation of forest edges and invasive predators have been identified as two primary threats to carnivore populations globally. These threats often occur in unison, facilitated by anthropogenic activities (e.g., fragmentation), and together may pose a greater influence than when they occur separately. Targeted conservation actions for forest carnivores, including Madagascar carnivores, have been hindered by a failure to understand the relative contributions of these factors in driving species declines. To fill this gap, we conducted an extensive camera survey along the edge of intact, continuous protected rainforests in eastern Madagascar to evaluate the extent invasive predators and forest edge separately and in combination affect native carnivore space use. We hypothesized that structural vegetation changes at the forest edge interact with invasive predator trap success and occurrence to reduce native carnivore space use near the forest edge and separately have less influence than when combined. In contrast to findings in fragmented and degraded forests of Madagascar, we found hard forest edge and invasive predators alone do not indiscriminately reduce native carnivore space use in continuous intact forest. Instead, we found free‐roaming dogs and cats interact with their surrounding environment (i.e., forest edge) in unique ways that shape species response differently than within interior forest. At the forest edge, vegetational changes of increasing shrub cover and the occurrence of dogs reduce space use of three of four native carnivores. However, we found greater effects of proximity to villages, especially with high invasive predator activity (free‐roaming cats). Ultimately, native carnivores showed variable sensitivities to pressures we examined, providing support for species‐specific management actions to maximize conservation outcomes. We encourage future studies to consider evaluating the magnitude of separate and combined threats to carnivores. Immunosuppressive drugs are the mainstay of treatment for many feline and canine autoimmune skin diseases, either as monotherapy or in combination with other drugs. Treatment with these drugs is often lifelong and may have long‐term consequences on the affected animal's overall quality‐of‐life. Clinicians need to understand the pharmacology of immunosuppressants in planning and executing the treatment regimen for the best possible clinical outcome, as well as reducing the risk of adverse effects. This review paper will focus on the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, clinical uses and adverse effects of immunosuppressive drugs used to treat autoimmune dermatoses in cats and dogs. Auricular chondritis of unknown cause was suspected in a 10‐year‐old male Bolognese dog with a five‐month history of painful bilateral nodular and ulcerative pyogranulomatous dermatitis of the pinnae with putative auricular cartilage destruction. A 9‐month‐old mixed‐breed dog developed generalised pustular dermatitis, accompanied by lethargy and hyperthermia, 7 days after oral fluralaner administration. Dermatopathological and microbiological evaluations were consistent with a pustular acantholytic dermatitis. Background: Fine bubble (FB) bathing has shown benefits on a mouse model of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, its efficacy in dogs with AD remains to be evaluated. Objective: This study aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness of FB bathing in dogs with AD. Animals: Seventeen dogs with AD whose clinical presentation showed a Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index, 4th iteration (CADESI‐04) score of <40. Materials and Methods: The dogs were randomly assigned to either the FB bathing group or the shampoo group. The treatments were administered once a week as per the instructions, in a trial totalling 4 weeks. Evaluations were conducted on Day (D)0 and D28 to assess the outcomes of the trial. The severity of AD was measured using the CADESI‐04 and the pruritus Visual Analog Scale (PVAS). The skin barrier function parameters, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and stratum corneum hydration were measured before and after the treatment. Results: Both treatment groups demonstrated a decreasing trend in CADESI‐04 scores, yet the FB group exhibited significant improvement in comparison to the shampoo group after 1 month of trial. There were no significant changes in PVAS scores in either group. No significant difference was found in skin barrier function parameters between the two treatments, although TEWL slightly decreased in the FB group and slightly increased in the shampoo group after treatment. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: These results suggested that FB treatment provides benefits for dogs with AD and offers an alternative topical treatment option with a lesser impact on skin barrier function compared to frequent shampooing. Background: Supplementation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) enables dose reduction of prednisolone and ciclosporin in canine atopic dermatitis (cAD). Objective: To determine if oral administration of PUFA reduces the dose of oclacitinib in cAD. Animals: Twenty‐two client‐owned dogs with cAD receiving oclacitinib. Materials and Methods: Dogs received a fish oil product (PUFA) or paraffin oil (placebo) for 16 weeks. Owners adjusted the oclacitinib dose according to daily pruritus assessments. On Day (D)0, D56 and D112, Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index, fourth iteration (CADESI‐04), pruritus Visual Analog Scale (PVAS), quality‐of‐life score (QoL), Global Assessment (GA), quality‐of‐coat (QoC) and adverse events were recorded. Results: Mean daily oclacitinib dose was significantly reduced in the PUFA group from 0.51 ± 0.20 mg/kg/24 h (D0) to 0.19 ± 0.14 mg/kg/24 h (D85–112; p < 0.00001) and not in the placebo group (D0: 0.70 ± 0.33 mg/kg/24 h; D85–112: 0.53 ± 0.35 mg/kg/24 h, p = 0.5422). CADESI‐04 did not change over time or differ between groups. PVAS was significantly lower in the PUFA group (2.8 ± 1.5) compared to placebo (4.2 ± 1.6) at D112 (p = 0.0375). QoL and QoC improved only in the PUFA group (QoL: D0: 20 ± 7, D112: 12 ± 5, p = 0.0057; QoC: D0: 0 ± 0.5, D112: 1 ± 0.5, p = 0.0410). GA on D112 was higher in the PUFA group (p = 0.008). No adverse events were observed. Conclusion: Oral supplementation of PUFA allowed dose reduction of oclacitinib and improved PVAS, QoL, QoC and GA. Background: Animal and owner quality‐of‐life (QoL) is pivotal in treatment decisions. Accurate measurement of owner‐reported QoL and treatment satisfaction (TS) supports disease burden and treatment benefit evaluation. Objectives: Develop and evaluate an owner‐completed canine dermatitis QoL and TS questionnaire (CDQoL‐TSQ) in allergic dogs. Materials and Methods: The CDQoL‐TSQ was drafted following review of existing measures and expert input. Content validity was assessed through interviews with owners of allergic dogs. Psychometric properties of the QoL domains (Canine QoL, Owner QoL) were evaluated. Score interpretation was derived. Results: Twenty dog owners were interviewed. Item wording was amended following the first 10 interviews. Data from 211 owners were used in the psychometric evaluation. The Canine QoL domain demonstrated strong internal consistency (α = 0.89), test–retest reliability (ICC2,1 = 0.844), moderate convergent validity (r = 0.41) and moderate‐high known‐groups validity (effect size 0.37–0.64). The Owner QoL domain demonstrated strong internal consistency (α = 0.73), high convergent validity (r = 0.63) and moderate‐high known‐groups validity (0.43–0.63). Test–retest reliability approached moderate strength (ICC2,1 = 0.490). Group‐level interpretation analysis showed minimal important difference of 7.0–13.6 points for dogs and 13.0–13.6 for owners. For individual dogs a change of 6.3 or 12.5 points for dogs, and 12.5 or 18.8 for owners indicates a response. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: The CDQOL‐TSQ is a two‐part assessment to evaluate QoL and TS in canine allergic dermatitis. The QoL questionnaire demonstrated validity and reliability, and interpretation of scores was derived, making it suitable for use in research and practice. Aims: To estimate the prevalence of carbapenemase‐producing Enterobacterales (CPE) carriage among pets using faecal specimens submitted to veterinary diagnostic laboratories throughout the US. A secondary aim was to employ whole‐genome sequencing (WGS) to characterize isolates of CPE from companion animals and compare them to publicly available CPE genomes. Methods and Results: To estimate the prevalence of CPE in companion animals in the USA, a multicenter surveillance study including 8 different veterinary diagnostic laboratories from across the USA was conducted. Briefly, remnant faecal specimens from dogs and cats were screened using two selective agar plates (CHROMID Carba and MacConkey with 1 mg/L cefotaxime and 0.125 mg/L meropenem) and presumptive CPE isolates screened by the modified carbapenemase inactivation method for carbapenemase production. A total of 2393 specimens were screened and yielded 196 isolates for carbapenemase screening. A total of 5 isolates from 4 dogs and 1 cat at 3 different veterinary diagnostic laboratories were confirmed to produce a carbapenemase (0.21%). Whole‐genome sequencing (WGS) revealed two E. coli (ST167) isolates that both produced an NDM‐5 carbapenemase, two Enterobacter hormaechei (ST171) isolates that produced an NDM‐5 carbapenemase and a KPC‐4 carbapenemase respectively and one Klebsiella oxytoca (ST199) that produced an Oxa‐48‐type carbapenemase. Both E. coli isolates were found to be within at least 22 SNPs of previously characterized canine and human CPE isolates. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the prevalence of CPE among companion animals is relatively low (0.21%) but that given the genetic relatedness of animal isolates to human isolates, additional surveillance is needed. ABSTRACT Canine lymphoma, the most prevalent haematopoietic tumour in dogs, presents significant challenges in veterinary oncology. This study investigates the prognostic value of the neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in small‐sized dogs (≤10 kg) with multicentric lymphoma. In this retrospective study, we examined medical records and haematological data from 35 dogs to assess the association between NLR and two key outcomes: time‐to‐progression (TTP) and lymphoma‐specific survival (LSS) using Cox proportional hazards models. Our findings revealed a significant correlation between elevated NLR and a worse prognosis, as evidenced by TTP (p = 0.005) and LSS (p = 0.001). NLR is linked to increased hazard ratios (HRs) for the time‐to‐progression rate (TTPR) at 180, 360 and 540 days (p = 0.001, p = 0.003 and p = 0.005, respectively) and the lymphoma‐specific survival rate (LSSR) at the same intervals (p = 0.016, p = 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). Cutoff value of 3.764 for NLR was established, above which there is a significantly increased risk of early disease progression and decreased survival. Additionally, our analysis indicates that dogs with substage b exhibited earlier progression than those with substage a, evident in overall (p = 0.026) and TTPR at 180 days (p = 0.004), 360 days (p = 0.018), 540 days (p = 0.026) and LSSR at 180 days (p = 0.033). The results underscore the potential of NLR as a prognostic marker in cases of dogs ≤10 kg with multicentric lymphoma, suggesting that higher NLR is associated with a poorer prognosis. Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) is a group of neurodegenerative disorders that occur in humans, dogs, and several other species. NCL is characterised clinically by progressive deterioration of cognitive and motor function, epileptic seizures, and visual impairment. Most forms present early in life and eventually lead to premature death. Typical pathological changes include neuronal accumulation of autofluorescent, periodic acid‐Schiff‐ and Sudan black B‐positive lipopigments, as well as marked loss of neurons in the central nervous system. Here, we describe a 19‐month‐old Schapendoes dog, where clinical signs were indicative of lysosomal storage disease, which was corroborated by pathological findings consistent with NCL. Whole genome sequencing of the affected dog and both parents, followed by variant calling and visual inspection of known NCL genes, identified a missense variant in CLN6 (c.386T>C). The variant is located in a highly conserved region of the gene and predicted to be harmful, which supports a causal relationship. The identification of this novel CLN6 variant enables pre‐breeding DNA‐testing to prevent future cases of NCL6 in the Schapendoes breed, and presents a potential natural model for NCL6 in humans. Split paw pad disease is a scarcely defined phenotype characterized by skin lesions on the paw pads of dogs. We studied a family of German Shepherd dogs, in which four dogs developed intermittent paw pad lesions and lameness. The paw pads of two of the affected dogs were biopsied and demonstrated cleft formation in the stratum spinosum and stratum corneum, the outermost layers of the epidermis. Whole genome sequencing data from an affected dog revealed a private heterozygous 18 bp in frame deletion in the KRT5 gene. The deletion NM_001346035.1:c.988_1005del or NP_001332964.1:p.(Asn330_Asp335del) is predicted to lead to a loss of six amino acids in the L12 linker domain of the encoded keratin 5. KRT5 variants in human patients lead to various subtypes of epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS). Localized EBS is the mildest of the KRT5‐related human diseases and may be caused by variants affecting the L12 linker domain of keratin 5. We therefore think that the detected KRT5 deletion in dogs represents a candidate causal variant for the observed skin lesions in dogs. However, while the clinical phenotype of KRT5‐mutant dogs of this study closely resembles human patients with localized EBS, there are differences in the histopathology. EBS is defined by cleft formation within the basal layer of the epidermis while the cleft formation in the dogs described herein occurred in the outermost layers, a hallmark of split paw pad disease. This paper examines newly acquired and previously published carbon and nitrogen isotope values in bone collagen from 58 dogs (Canis familiaris) dated to the Mesolithic–Neolithic transition. Using the Bayesian mixing model FRUITS, we estimate the marine or freshwater dietary fractions. These estimates, together with a radiocarbon‐based Bayesian statistical model, have allowed us to calculate the freshwater reservoir age for selected Danish regions. The Ertebølle and Funnel Beaker cultures display different feeding traditions, and stable isotope values of dogs cannot be used as a direct proxy for reconstructing human diet, as the foodstuffs appear to have been subject to some deliberate differentiation. Aim: This study investigated the adjunctive effect of polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) on bone formation in alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) sockets. Materials and Methods: Both mandibular second, third and fourth premolars of eight beagle dogs were randomly divided into ARP and ARP/PDRN groups. Following tooth extraction, ARP procedures were conducted using collagenized alloplastic graft material and bilayer collagen membrane soaked with normal saline (ARP group) or PDRN (ARP/PDRN group) for 10 min before application. Both groups were also randomly allocated to 2‐, 4‐ or 12‐week healing subgroups. The primary endpoint of this study was to compare histomorphometric differences between ARP and ARP/PDRN. The secondary endpoints of this study were to compare micro‐CT analysis and three‐dimensional volumetric measurement between the two groups. Results: In the histomorphometric analysis, the ARP/PDRN group exhibited greater new bone formation at coronal, middle and total position compared with the ARP group at 2‐week healing. The number of newly formed blood vessels was higher in the ARP/PDRN group than in the ARP group at 2‐ and 4‐week healing. In micro‐CT analysis, the mean new bone volume/total bone volume between ARP and ARP/PDRN was statistically significant at 2‐week healing. Ridge volume alterations were significantly decreased in the ARP/PDRN group during entire healing time compared with the ARP group, especially on the buccal side. Although domestic dogs vary considerably in both body size and skull morphology, behavioural audiograms have previously been found to be similar in breeds as distinct as a Chihuahua and a St Bernard. In this study, we created micro‐CT reconstructions of the middle ears and bony labyrinths from the skulls of 17 dog breeds, including both Chihuahua and St Bernard, plus a mongrel and a wolf. From these reconstructions, we measured middle ear cavity and ossicular volumes, eardrum and stapes footplate areas and bony labyrinth volumes. All of these ear structures scaled with skull size with negative allometry and generally correlated better with condylobasal length than with maximum or interaural skull widths. Larger dogs have larger ear structures in absolute terms: the volume of the St Bernard's middle ear cavity was 14 times that of the Chihuahua. The middle and inner ears are otherwise very similar in morphology, the ossicular structure being particularly well‐conserved across breeds. The expectation that larger ear structures in larger dogs would translate into hearing ranges shifted towards lower frequencies is not consistent with the existing audiogram data. Assuming that the audiograms accurately reflect the hearing of the breeds in question, oversimplifications in existing models of middle ear function or limitations imposed by other parts of the auditory system may be responsible for this paradox. Purpose Methods Results Conclusion To describe the clinical features surgical technique, early and long‐term outcome with or without surgery, and histopathological findings of melanocytic anterior uveal lesions in young dogs.Medical records of dogs at a guide dog facility removed from training due to a pigmented iris lesion were reviewed from 2014 to 2021. Selected dogs had surgical iridectomies performed.Iridal melanocytic lesions were characterized as well‐delineated, pigmented, and flat (nevus) or raised (mass) lesions of the iris. Forty dogs (18 Labrador retrievers, 18 German shepherd dogs, 1 Golden retriever, 3 Labrador/Golden mixes) ranging from 0.5 to 3.1 years of age were affected unilaterally (n = 35) or bilaterally (n = 5). Sector iridectomy was performed in 13 dogs with prominent and well‐isolated mass lesion and enucleation was carried out in 2 dogs with extensive lesions, while all other cases were monitored without surgical intervention. Postoperative complications included dyscoria (13/13), focal posterior synechia (9/13) and focal nonprogressive cataract (8/13). All eyes remained visual and comfortable up to 6.2 years post‐iridectomy with no clinically identifiable local recurrence. Histopathology was consistent with uveal melanocytoma in all samples obtained surgically. All cases that did not undergo surgery remained free of complications up to 4.5 year post diagnosis.Melanocytic anterior uveal lesions may be overrepresented in certain lineages of breeds and be present at a young age. While none of the eyes developed complications when monitored without surgery, early surgical excision of the mass by sector iridectomy yields noteworthy functional outcome and retention of a comfortable globe. Aims Methods and Results Conclusions Zoonotic arboviruses (arthropod‐borne) of the Orthoflavivirus genus, such as West Nile virus (WNV), Usutu virus (USUV) and Tick‐borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), are emerging in Northwestern Europe and pose a threat to both human and animal health. In the Netherlands, passive symptomatic surveillance (notification of clinical cases) in horses is one of the main pillars for the early detection of WNV. For such passive surveillance to work properly, horse owners and veterinarians need to recognize symptoms and report suspected cases to the authorities. Currently, little is known about the seroprevalence of orthoflaviviruses in domestic animals in the Netherlands. Therefore, this study aims at identifying the seroprevalence of WNV and USUV in horses and dogs in the Netherlands. Additionally, this study seeks to evaluate the knowledge and perceptions of Dutch horse owners towards mosquito‐borne viruses.A cross‐sectional serosurvey in horses and dogs was conducted between May 2021 and May 2022. Serum samples were screened using an ELISA and doubtful and positive samples were confirmed by Virus Neutralization Tests for WNV, USUV and TBEV. A validated questionnaire, the MosquitoWise survey, was used to assess the knowledge and perceptions of Dutch horse owners towards mosquito‐borne viruses between July and October 2022. The serosurvey revealed a low seroprevalence for WNV in horses and no WNV‐positive dogs were found. Similarly, a low USUV seroprevalence was found in dogs. The MosquitoWise survey revealed a high knowledge level for horse owners and high awareness of WNV vaccination but a more limited intent to vaccinate.The low seroprevalences of WNV and USUV indicate many dogs and horses remain susceptible, offering opportunities for trend analysis and surveillance. However, despite multiple recent detections of WNV, USUV, and TBEV in humans, the role of dogs and horses in early detection of human cases is debatable. High awareness among horse owners and the absence of detected equine WNV cases highlight this uncertainty. Conservative management can be successful, but the proportion of dogs that recover and the fate of herniated material are uncertain.Determine the proportion of nonambulatory dogs with conservatively treated acute thoracolumbar disk extrusion that recover ambulation and measure the change in spinal cord compression during the first 12 weeks after presentation.Seventy‐two client‐owned nonambulatory dogs with acute thoracolumbar intervertebral disk extrusion.This is a prospective cohort study. Enrolled dogs underwent magnetic resonance imaging at presentation and owners were provided with conservative management recommendations. Imaging was repeated after 12 weeks. Recovery of ambulation was defined as 10 consecutive steps without falling. Spinal cord compression was determined from the cross‐sectional area of the vertebral canal and extradural compressive material at the lesion epicenter. The association between recovery and change in compression over the 12‐week observational period was examined.Forty‐nine of fifty‐one (96%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 87%‐99%) of deep pain‐positive and 10/21 (48%; 95% CI, 28%‐68%) of deep pain‐negative dogs recovered ambulation within the 12‐week period. The median time to ambulation was 11 and 25 days for deep pain‐positive and ‐negative dogs, respectively. Reduction in spinal cord compression varied among individuals from minimal to complete and apparently was unrelated to the recovery of ambulation.A high proportion of conservatively treated dogs recovered ambulation after conservative management of acute thoracolumbar disk herniation. Aims Methods and Results Conclusions Judicious antimicrobial use in companion animal practice is critical for maintaining the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents against bacterial infections and reducing the selection of antimicrobial‐resistant bacteria. This study aimed to provide insights into companion animal veterinarians' antimicrobial treatment recommendations for common bacterial infections in dogs and cats and describe the factors influencing their prescription choices.An online survey using QualtricsXM® software was administered between September and November 2022 to companion animal veterinarians who were Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association members. Descriptive and text analyses were conducted to assess the participants' responses. A total of 78 surveys were included in the analysis. Skin infections were ranked as the most common bacterial infections for which veterinarians prescribed antimicrobial agents, followed by ear, urinary tract, respiratory, and enteric infections. The severity of clinical symptoms and the results of bacterial culture and susceptibility tests were the most influential factors for veterinarians when making antimicrobial prescription choices. Veterinarians were aware of the current antimicrobial prescription guideline recommendations when prescribing antimicrobials empirically to nine hypothetical scenarios of bacterial infections. According to the results of the text analysis that assessed veterinarians' responses to an open‐ended question, regarding their challenges when prescribing antimicrobial agents, the pairwise correlation of word frequencies within each response showed the highest correlations between the words ‘owner’ and ‘compliance’, ‘administration’ and ‘route’, ‘cost’ and ‘culture’, and ‘patients’ and ‘acceptance’.The study results can support animal health stakeholders in the development of antimicrobial stewardship programmes to promote appropriate antimicrobial use and limit the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Development of a chromogenic in situ hybridization (ISH) assay for the identification of Neospora caninum in paraffin‐embedded muscle samples.13/16 dogs had only neuromuscular signs of neosporosis, 3/16 had disease signs with concomitant central nervous system (CNS) involvement. Serology was performed in 15/16, with 10/15 showing titers >1 : 160 at admission. PCR on muscle samples detected N. caninum DNA in 11/16. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) detected N. caninum in 9/16 and ISH in 9/16. Histopathology revealed inflammatory myopathy in 10/16, necrotizing myopathy in 5/16, borderline changes in 1/16 and tachyzoites in 9/16. In 4 cases, N. caninum infection was confirmed with all 5 diagnostic methods, 3 cases with 4, 2 with 3, 6 with 2, and 1 animal with 1.Diagnosis of N. caninum infection should rely on a multimodal diagnostic approach and negativity of 1 single test should not allow for exclusion. Objective Methods Results Conclusion To investigate the prevalence of firework‐associated fear in dogs in Sydney, owner perception of their dog's response to fireworks, perceived efficacy of interventions to manage fearful behaviours and the frequency of dog owners seeking professional advice for these behaviours.Dog owners in the Greater Sydney area were invited to complete an anonymous online survey.From 387 valid responses, 44.4% (171 of 385) reported their dogs were fearful of fireworks. The most common fear‐related behaviour was seeking an owner or caretaker (120 of 161, 74.5%). Most owners responded by bringing their dog inside or trying to comfort or reassure their dog. Only 22.5% of owners sought professional advice for their dog's fear of fireworks, but of these, 65.5% considered that advice to be effective. Source and breed group were significantly associated with fear of fireworks (P = 0.011, P = 0.036 respectively). Fear of fireworks was also significantly associated with fear of thunder (P < 0.0001), gunshots (P < 0.0001) and vehicles (P = 0.0009).Fear of fireworks and other loud noises negatively impacts canine welfare, yet only a small percentage of owners sought professional advice. There is scope for veterinarians to educate owners and raise awareness about the identification and management of noise‐associated fear and reduce the risk of escalation of fearful behaviours. All eyes were examined using an ocular surface analyzer (OSA‐VET) to determine lipid layer thickness (LLT) of the tear film, tear meniscus height (TMH), non‐invasive tear breakup time (NIBUT), and meibomian gland loss rate of the lower eyelids (MGLRL). Schirmer tear test 1 (STT‐1) and tear film breakup time (TBUT) were also performed. Statistical analyses involved one‐way ANOVA, Kruskal–Wallis H test, post hoc Holm–Sidak test, and Pearson correlation coefficient.While STT‐1 showed no significant difference among dog groups, brachycephalic dogs had significantly lower values in TBUT, NIBUT, and LLT, and a higher TMH, compared to mesocephalic and dolichocephalic dogs. Additionally, brachycephalic dogs exhibited a significantly higher MGLRL than dolichocephalic dogs. Correlations among tests were generally weak to moderate (r < .6) except for a strong correlation between CFR and LLT (r = .641, p < .001), and between TBUT and NIBUT (r = .899, p < .001).Brachycephalic morphology predisposes dogs to a significantly thinner lipid layer and diminished tear film stability, likely due to factors such as impaired meibomian gland function and increased ocular exposure compared to other cephalic conformations, thereby increasing their risk of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). Purpose Methods Results Conclusions Heavy brows in Chow Chow and Shar‐Pei dogs can be associated with pseudoptosis and trichiasis‐entropion of the upper eyelids, causing vision impairment and ocular discomfort. This study describes the outcomes of brow rhytidectomy ± Stades‐like procedure to address these anatomical abnormalities.Retrospective medical records review (2019–2022).Twenty‐seven dogs (n = 15 Chow Chow, n = 12 Shar‐Peis) were included, aged 1.9 ± 1.5 years (0.5–6.5 years). Presenting complaints included recurrent episodes of ocular inflammation (n = 13, 48.1%), blepharospasm (n = 10, 37.0%), corneal ulcers (n = 8, 29.6%), entropion (n = 6, 22.2%), and impaired vision (n = 4, 14.8%). Brow skin was removed as follows: (i) First incision parallel and 10–15 mm dorsal to upper lid, slightly extending beyond medial/lateral canthi; (ii) second incision forming an arc with its apex 15–35 mm dorsal to the first incision; and (iii) standard two or three layers closure. In 22/27 dogs, a Stades‐like procedure was performed by removing a 2–4 mm strip of skin above eyelid margin and leaving it to heal by secondary intention (no sutures). At last recheck (follow‐up 354.5 ± 187.8 days), 19/27 dogs (70.4%) had an adequate eyelid conformation, 7/27 dogs (25.9%) were considered under‐corrected, and 1/27 dogs (3.7%) was over‐corrected. Most owners (81.5%) were satisfied with the surgical results. Dogs were excluded for: (1) treatment within 2 months with glucocorticoid, anti‐neoplastic, or anti‐proteinuric therapies, (2) diagnosed hypercortisolism or renal lymphoma, (3) active urine sediment, or (4) urine pH >8. Survival analysis utilized a Kaplan‐Meier estimator and log‐rank testing.There was a significant difference in median survival between proteinuric and nonproteinuric dogs classified by urine dipstick (245 days [91, 399] vs 335 days [214, 456]; P = .03) or UP : USG (237 days [158, 306] vs 304 days [173, 434]; P = .03). The memristor‐based Pavlov circuits have been extensively studied, but most of the circuits only have learning functions plus forgetting function, and lack emotional function and feature memory. This leads to not be realistic enough for simulating Pavlovian circuit experiments. In this paper, we simulate learning and three forgetting processes on the classic Pavlov circuit, which is consistent with the brain's forgetting mechanism. Then, we add feature memory part, which includes an emotion module, synapse modules, and feature switch modules. The emotion module with positive and negative emotion functions has different effects on memory time, so as to improve its imitating ability of human emotional behavior. The synapse modules and feature switching modules realize different feature memory for different things, so as to promote the circuit's associative memory ability to be more realistic. Through these improvements, the function of the Pavlov dog experiment circuit is more similar to biological mechanism.
