The symposium "Inclusive Outreach and Education for Inspiring the Next Generation" explored efforts to promote diversity in fisheries science and enhance inclusivity in fisheries education. Presentations focused on tools for inclusive outreach, incorporating cultural perspectives, and adapting to the challenges posed by COVID-19. The session emphasized the importance of hands-on experiences, culturally relevant education, and inclusive pedagogy. Case studies from various regions highlighted the significance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge with modern scientific approaches for effective fisheries conservation and management. ABSTRACT Hundreds of Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) have emerged along the European Union coast trying to dynamize fisheries‐dependent areas through an approach based on community‐led local development (CLLD) strategies. In this research, we characterized and analyzed environmental projects funded by the FLAGs through the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund in Spain from 2014 to 2020. The Spanish Network of Fisheries Groups database allowed us to locate projects defined as environmental, which were then classified into six areas and different project typologies. Most projects were categorized by FLAGs as environmental but were really linked to tourism development. Moreover, true environmental projects were substantially lower in total cost than statistics showed. These conclusions should lead to a reflection on the role that FLAGs and European fisheries funds should play in environmental care of European coasts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surf breaks are increasingly recognized as socio‐environmental phenomena that provide opportunities for biodiversity conservation and sustained benefits for local communities. Here, we examine an additional benefit from improved conservation of the ecosystems that host and surround surf breaks—their coincidence with carbon dense coastal ecosystems. Using global spatial datasets of irrecoverable carbon (defined as carbon stocks that, if lost today, could not be recovered within 30 years' time), surf break locations, ecosystem types, protected areas, and Key Biodiversity Areas, we identified 88.3 million tonnes of irrecoverable carbon held in surf ecosystems. Of this total, 17.2 million tonnes are found in Key Biodiversity Areas without formal measures of protection. These results highlight surf conservation as a potential avenue to simultaneously mitigate climate change, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable development in coastal communities. Coastal marine habitats (i.e. mangroves, saltmarshes, and seagrasses) have a high capacity for carbon sequestration (termed "blue carbon") and the potential to reduce the effects of greenhouse gas emissions. However, blue carbon habitats have historically decreased as a consequence of land conversion, coastal development, and pollution and are under threat in many locations. Restoration of these habitats can reverse historic losses and generate carbon credits through increased carbon sequestration. With a long coastline, we hypothesized that there would be significant opportunities for coastal blue carbon in Aotearoa New Zealand. Results revealed Aotearoa estuaries and coastal areas contain approximately 20,932 ha of saltmarsh, 30,533 ha of mangrove, and 61,340 ha of seagrass, estimated to sequester a total of approximately 57,800 tC/year. A further 87,861 ha of land was estimated to be potentially suitable for blue carbon projects via tidal restoration, of which 56,482 ha was suitable for saltmarsh restoration (equivalent to 60,435 tC yr if restored), 17,291 ha was suitable for mangroves (26,455 tC/year), and 14,087 ha was suitable for seagrass (4790 tC/year). Both existing extent and restoration opportunity varied throughout the country, with greater opportunity in some regions than others. Nationwide, the total sequestration potential for blue carbon restoration was estimated at 91,680 tC yr−1 if all potential areas were restored. Carbon credits generated by blue carbon projects could be traded on a carbon market in Aotearoa, generate revenue for landowners, provide an additional pathway to meet domestic and international climate change targets, and result in a diversity of other ecological, social, and cultural co‐benefits from coastal restoration. To test the potential of high‐resolution satellite image analysis for assessing and predicting the mesoscale (<10 km in this study) effects of climate and environmental change on temperature and primary productivity in fishing grounds, we conducted satellite image analysis around an island in a coastal strait west of Japan from 2018 to 2023. We observed a distinct north–south gradient in sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll a concentration (CHL) over approximately 20 km of the transect, which was likely affected by the current system. The model configuration suggests that the frequency of southward currents during winter–spring can control the magnitude of spring phytoplankton blooms. In the study region, an increase in SST at a rate of 0.06–0.13°C y−1 occurred during the study period, accompanied by a decrease in CHL. The north–south gradient in the rate of change suggests that the variation in the temperature and flow rate of the Kuroshio Current into the study area was due to these abrupt changes. The relationship between the annual mean SST and CHL was also spatially heterogeneous, showing a higher sensitivity of CHL to SST in the southwest of the island than in the north. In addition to the intrusion of warm and oligotrophic Kuroshio waters, the spread of less saline and more eutrophic coastal waters likely influenced this spatial heterogeneity. Although human‐made barriers to animal movement are ubiquitous across many types of ecosystems, the science behind these barriers and how to ameliorate their effects lags far behind in marine environments compared with terrestrial and freshwater realms. Using juvenile sawfish in an Australian nursery habitat as a model system, we aimed to assess the effects of a major anthropogenic development on the movement behavior of coastal species. We compared catch rates and movement behavior (via acoustic telemetry) of juvenile green sawfish (Pristis zijsron) before and after a major coastal structure was built in an important nursery habitat. Acoustic tracking and catch data showed that the development did not affect levels of sawfish recruitment in the nursery, but it did constrain movements of juveniles moving throughout the nursery, demonstrating the reluctance of shoreline‐associated species to travel around large or unfamiliar coastal structures. Given the current lack of information on human‐made movement barriers in the marine environment, these findings highlight the need for further research in this area, and we propose the development of and experimentation with marine animal crossings as an important area of emerging research. As a predatory fish that migrates between freshwater and marine environments, the sea trout (Salmo trutta) is important in linking these systems. This study investigated movement patterns of sea trout in a coastal fjord at the Swedish Skagerrak region from August 2018 to January 2019, using acoustic telemetry, while assessing these against environmental variables across different spatial and temporal scales. Six acoustic receivers were deployed in the fjord and a river, which flows into the upper reaches of the fjord, with the aim of detecting 20 sea trout that had been tagged with acoustic transmitters. Sea surface temperature and winds (east–west) affected movement patterns of the sea trout the most, while changes in atmospheric pressure were also important, but to a lesser extent. Sea surface temperature and atmospheric pressure both had a positive relationship with the number of detections, whereas stronger winds from the east (i.e. from land) resulted in more detections than stronger winds from the west (i.e. from the ocean). In addition, interesting diel (day–night) movement patterns were observed for some fish. A significant positive correlation was also discovered between the weight of the fish and the number of detections. This study offers insight in movements of sea trout that use coastal habitats and how environmental conditions can affect movement patterns in a fjord system. To further our understanding of sea trout movement patterns and connectivity, tracking from river, through fjord, out to sea and at a longer time scale with more variation in fish size would be valuable to understand more about the complex movement dynamics of this important species. Marine coastal resources are crucial to Tanzania's socio‐economic development and are a lifeline for the livelihoods and incomes of coastal communities. This study provides an overview of the coastal development of mariculture in mainland Tanzania and suggests future development strategies. The review article covers extensive reports available through field interviews, government policy documents, library literature searches and field work carried out by the authors. Despite the immense potential of mariculture to improve food security for localcommunities, its development has been uneven. Specifically only seaweed farming has advanced to commercial‐scale production. Other mariculture activities, such as finfish farming (e.g. milkfish, silver pompano), shellfish farming (e.g. prawn, mud crab and half‐pearl) and sea cucumber farming, are underdeveloped and confined to small‐scale operations. Locally consumed finfish, such as milkfish and pompano, have not attracted investors out of fear that the recovery of investment may not be achieved due to the low prices offered in the market. In this context, the sustainable use of coastal resources through mariculture becomes paramount to alleviating poverty and facilitating controlled migration from rural to urban. This comprehensive review explores the historical evolution and current status of mariculture initiatives in the coastal waters of mainland Tanzania, which presents a crucial aspect of the socio‐economic development of the nation. With declining global capture fisheries production and a growing demand for fish protein, Tanzania has strategically embraced mariculture as a viable alternative. The article traced the development of mariculture since the 1970s, highlighting past and current initiatives managed by government agencies, non‐government organizations and the private sector. Notable successes, such as seaweed culture, are highlighted along with the challenges that hinder the growth of marine farming activities. The review integrates insights from a comprehensive survey in coastal Tanzania, focusing on mariculture activities and collecting information on people who have stopped such practices, elucidating reasons for quitting. By consolidating experiences from past and present mariculture initiatives, this review provides valuable guidance for decision‐making towards promoting sustainable mariculture that supports coastal communities while preserving marine biodiversity. To achieve better biodiversity outcomes and match local governance capacity, cumulative effects assessment frameworks that combine Indigenous and western knowledge to predict future development impacts on biodiversity are needed.We developed a spatial future‐focused model informed by inclusive elicitation and strategic foresight to assess the regional cumulative effects of development on ecosystem health across the land and sea. We collaborated with three First Nations on the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada, enabling Indigenous priorities, knowledge and values to drive the process, from the choice of priority ecosystem components (including salmon, herring, seabirds and bears), to identifying future development scenarios (based on forestry, energy/mining, tourism and salmon aquaculture sectors). Bayesian networks were populated with empirical data and expert judgement elicited from knowledge holders to predict the cumulative effects of current and future pressures on species and ecosystems.Under current conditions, the lowest probability of persistence was predicted for Pacific salmon (37%), followed by Pacific herring (43%). Under future conditions, the greatest declines in species health were associated with the intense development of mining, tourism and forestry, with up to a 54% decline from the current baseline health estimates predicted for Marbled Murrelets and old‐growth forest.Future outcomes for overall ecosystem health were predicted to be worst in scenarios with high future forestry activities (>60% decline in some areas). The continuation or development of all four industries resulted in an 8% decline overall in ecosystem health across the Central Coast. In contrast, predicted ecosystem health in the tourism economy scenario increased up to 15% in some marine areas, primarily driven by the removal of salmon aquaculture and forestry activities.Synthesis and applications. Our study demonstrates an inclusive, regional approach to assessing the cumulative effects of future development on coastal species. The novel participatory tools and predictive framework draw upon and interweave multiple forms of knowledge, enabling Indigenous values to drive the process, and appropriately integrate Indigenous knowledge into regional cumulative effects assessment. Engraulis ringens (anchovy) is a small pelagic fish of the Family Engraulidae that inhabits the neretic‐coastal zone from northern Peru to south‐central Chile. It is the main resource species of industrial fishing of northern Chile, representing 80% of the annual landings of the purse seine fleet. The history of this fishery (1985–2023) shows a strong decrease in annual industrial landings, especially during extreme El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. The greatest decrease in landings in two decades occurred in 2020, coinciding with a cold La Niña event, which had not been observed in previous La Niña events. We evaluated whether the current decrease in annual landings of E. ringens is associated with oceanographic changes in northern Chile during El Niño or La Niña events. We applied a neuronal network model to identify the spatial and temporal distribution of E. ringens using the catch probability of each boat of the industrial purse seine fleet. The selected oceanographic variables (sea surface temperature, salinity, depth of the mixed layer, sea height and currents) for the 2003–2020 period were obtained from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS program) and used as predictor variables of the monthly landings of E. ringens. The neural network model explained 97% of the monthly variability of catch probability of E. ringens by the industrial purse seine fleet. The spatial distribution of catch probability of E. ringens was analyzed independently for El Niño (2015), La Niña (2007, 2013, and 2020), and Neutral (2004) years. We found that catch probability extended further west during La Niña events (except for 2020), occupying a greater area, but were limited to a 10 nautical mile coastal strip during the El Niño event. The spatial distribution of catch probability in the Neutral condition was near the coast, although not as restricted as during the El Niño event. The higher catch probabilities in the La Niña event of 2020 were near the coast, in contrast to the previous La Niña events of 2007 and 2013, due to the restriction of the optimal habitat of E. ringens in response to changes in oceanographic conditions. The application of the results of this study will allow understanding and probably anticipating the consequences that extreme ENSO events could have on the catch probability of the industrial anchovy purse seine fleet in northern Chile. In comparison to the wealth of critical evaluation of LEADER (i.e., Liaison entre actions de développement de l'économie rurale), there has been no consolidated attempt to reflect on the contribution of Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs), now entering their third EU programming period. Set up in the image of LEADER, and a novel governance instrument within the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), FLAGs aim to activate local responses that build resilience and adaptability within the fisheries sector and wider communities. In addition to introducing the accompanying articles that make up this special issue of Sociologia Ruralis, our article gives an account of the emergence of community‐led local development (CLLD) in fisheries and the attributes that have characterised the application of the LEADER approach within a fisheries‐territorial development context. In many cases, FLAGs have led to improved relationships between the small‐scale fishing sector and wider local social and economic networks, helping the sector reimagine its role within local economies. Yet outcomes vary as the FLAG approach has been applied across different cultural and institutional settings. There are indications that the system is becoming enveloped by wider priorities of coastal development and blue growth. Yet FLAGs may well provide a successful test case for widening participation in the CFP and upscaling integration of the fishing industry within local and regional economies. Small‐scale fisheries and coastal communities experienced dramatic downward trends over recent decades impacting rural development on European coastlines. Fisheries governance in the European Union (EU) follows exogenous top‐down regulations steering fishing practices through detailed regulations. In contrast, the EU's structural funding system of Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) involves an endogenous approach consisting of more participatory bottom‐up processes. This article explores these approaches by investigating the capacity of Swedish FLAGs to support small‐scale fisheries and coastal communities. Using document analyses and interviews, we show that, in principle, the FLAG approach has the capacity to support local fisheries developments and to foreground small‐scale fisheries interests in combination with community interests. However, the unique Swedish FLAG experience reveals a diminished scope for including small‐scale fisheries' and coastal communities' interests on a structural basis. The Swedish FLAG experience, we conclude, mirrors a path‐dependent trajectory of marginalisation and disempowerment of local fisheries interests hampering the potential of endogenous development. The available data on occurrence patterns of cetaceans in the Red Sea area of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is very limited. The dearth of information is of pressing conservation concern as the coastline is undergoing rapid development as part of the Kingdom's effort to diversify its national economy. To understand how these developments will impact cetaceans in the region, the first large‐scale acoustic and visual survey in the Kingdom's part of the Gulf of Aqaba and the northeastern Red Sea was undertaken in 2020. The results of the acoustic surveys reveal 3.6 encounters per 100 km of track line of odontocete species with variable distribution across the study area. No baleen whale vocalizations were detected. Through visual surveys, five odontocete species were identified within the study area: Tursiops truncatus, T. aduncus, Stenella attenuata, S. longirostris, and two opportunistic sightings of a single Grampus griseus. Objective: The Atlantic Tripletail Lobotes surinamensis is a globally distributed subtropical and tropical fish species that inhabits estuaries throughout the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM), particularly during warm months. Little is known about distribution and residency patterns within estuaries, as the species is rarely caught in the recreational fishery, and virtually no commercial fishery exists for the species in the GOM. Methods: We used data from a long‐term fishery‐independent gill‐net survey to model estuarine distribution throughout Texas and to relate environmental variables to the Atlantic Tripletail catch. Result: Although there were no observable temporal trends in catch over the time series (1990–2022), the most recent 6 years included record catch in six of the 10 major Texas estuaries, possibly indicating a recent pulse in abundance. Catch throughout the time series was spatially aggregated in a small number of "hot spots" observed coastwide. Latitude was the best predictor of catch, although wind fetch and wind aspect (wind direction in relation to shoreline direction) were important predictors, and catch was highest near GOM inlets. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department gill‐net sampling program caught a range of Atlantic Tripletail between 171 and 880 mm total length, indicating a potential gear bias against juveniles. Conclusion: Despite this gear bias, these data shed light on the factors that drive Atlantic Tripletail estuarine distribution and abundance in the northwestern GOM. Wind‐driven passive movements in the estuary, combined with active selection of polyhaline habitats near GOM inlets, might be primary drivers of Atlantic Tripletail catch, thus supporting findings from previous studies. In Texas estuaries, Atlantic Tripletail are clustered in hot spots, which are typified by windward shorelines, and present mainly during the high‐use fishing season. Aquatic systems are warming and exceeding upper thermal limits (UTLs) for many fish species, yet understanding how they inform resilience to climate change is challenging. Using Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) as a model, we conducted a systematic review involving 168 papers investigating UTL in five species. We found considerable variation in UTL among species, within species and across life stages; largely attributed to methodological approaches (e.g. CTmax/UILT, Aerobic/Cardiac Scope, Thermal Migration Barriers, Rearing Mortality, Thermal Preference/Avoidance). Given that each method has strengths and weaknesses owing to logistics, time scale and ecological realism, we offer a new framework for assessing vulnerability to warming that stresses the importance of considering UTL metrics in the context of intended use (i.e. the development of management guidelines, projections of future persistence and survival) and what aspect (physiological or behavioural) of thermal response a metric investigates. Comparing studies with identical UTL approaches revealed that within species, UTL was higher for populations historically encountering higher temperatures—suggesting local thermal adaptation. Within populations, UTL differed across the lifecycle, being highest in fry and lowest in embryo and migrating adults, but this was not universal. For spawning Pacific salmon, UTL has not been assessed and few studies have examined estuarine and marine stages. Ultimately, this data gap limits the life‐history thermal perspectives that can be drawn and may indicate a broader gap for all fishes, given that Pacific salmon are among the most well‐studied species. Our framework illustrates the inherent and methodological inconsistencies in UTL and offers a guide for how thermal limits can best be used to assess the warming tolerance and vulnerability of fishes. Tasmania (including offshore islands) has the largest breeding population of little penguins (Eudyptula minor) in Australia, but coastal development around nesting areas has led to habitat loss, often resulting in smaller, fragmented colonies. Colonies have also been subject to predation by introduced domestic species. This study assessed whether historical levels of domestic dog predation could threaten the viability of penguin populations.Data collected since the 1980s detailing little penguin kills by domestic dogs were used to inform the extent of individual mortality events. The potential impact of dog attacks on the viability of little penguin colonies of the sizes typically found on mainland Tasmania was explored using an age‐based population model. Simulation was conducted over decadal timescales to assess the impact of attacks at varying frequencies and intensities on small (100 birds), medium (300 birds) and large (500 birds) colonies that were stable, growing or decreasing.Results suggested that frequent and intense dog attacks markedly increased the probability of colony decline, regardless of colony size. Even large, growing penguin colonies were at risk of decline. The risk of extinction was <10% for medium and large stable colonies if no more than 15–25 penguins were killed per attack and there were no more than 20 attacks per 50 years. For small‐sized colonies, the risk of extinction was <10% if fewer than 10 attacks occurred per 50‐year period and no more than 15 birds were killed per attack.Importantly, results suggested that for small colonies especially, even low levels of predator attack could lead to colony collapse in 10–15 years. For large colonies that were already decreasing, the average time to extinction was markedly increased with additional mortalities from dogs, highlighting the need for ongoing management measures that reduce or eliminate dog attacks to help conserve this iconic species. Objective: Understanding the genetic structure of harvested fishery species is crucial for accurate stock assessments and effective management strategies. There have been several rangewide population genetic analyses of Pacific Hake Merluccius productus; however, a thorough focus on the heavily harvested coastal stock off the west coast of North America is missing. Recent observations of spatial–temporal variability in life history and migratory patterns of the coastal population have brought into question whether this variation may be related to genetic differentiation. Methods: Here, we used restriction site‐associated DNA sequencing markers to thoroughly assess the potential for spatial–temporal genetic differentiation in the coastal stock of Pacific Hake. We sampled during different seasons from British Columbia down to the U.S.–Mexico border over multiple years on what traditionally have been thought to constitute spawning and feeding grounds, resulting in the most comprehensive assessment of coastal Pacific Hake population structure to date. Result: Generally, our results suggest very weak to no structure among coastal spatial–temporal sites and corroborate previous findings of strong differentiation between coastal and Salish Sea populations. The lack of structure among coastal sites is likely due to significant amounts of gene flow in this highly migratory population. Conclusion: These findings align with the ongoing management strategy for coastal Pacific Hake, which is based on an annual stock assessment that considers the coastal stock homogenous and distinct from the Salish Sea population. The understanding that management units indeed match genetic populations provides managers with additional confidence in existing management strategy. Coastal communities and their landscapes are subject to constant change, and today face new challenges as a result of climate change and the sustainable energy transition. To ensure the resilience of coastal communities to ongoing changes in the natural and constructed environment, it is imperative that planners and other decision‐makers understand the importance of local places to residents.We used an interdisciplinary, mixed‐methods approach to study relationships between coastal residents and places in south Co. Wicklow, Ireland, introducing the concept of 'affective engagement'. Grounded in new materialist theory (notably actor–network theory), this term connects the meaning derived by residents from their relationships with coastal places ('affect') to the extent of their material interactions ('engagement'). 'Affect' was determined from thematic analysis of interviews and open questionnaire responses, as well as place attachment scales included in the questionnaire. Measures describing the strength of the relationship between residents and coastal places were used as a proxy for 'engagement'.To understand how experienced meaning and material interaction interlink, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to join and visually explore the different measures of 'affect' and 'engagement'. Potentially mediating sociodemographic variables were investigated using a permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA).The majority of self‐selected study participants displayed strong place attachment to their most frequently visited places. We found that affective engagement does not vary with age, gender or type of place. Participants favoured natural and constructed places in equal measure. This implies that constructed places can be of high value due to their different functions for different individuals, and that landscape transformations may impact on coastal residents if they cause a change in functionality.We found two domains comprising affective engagement that are not measurable by quantitative or qualitative data alone. The first of these domains is driven by attachments to places, and the other by meanings relating to either personal or social fulfilment afforded by a place.Our findings may help planners better understand the meanings behind local support for (or resistance against) landscape transformations, and how residents' affective engagement might be impacted by proposed interventions. The 2011 Tohoku‐oki tsunami caused large‐scale topographic changes along the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan. More than 10 years have passed since the tsunami waves struck the area. Today, because of reconstruction work, very few places exist where natural post‐tsunami topographic changes can be monitored continuously. For this study, the authors investigated topographic changes caused not only by the 2011 tsunami but also by natural and artificial activities during the 50 years before and after the tsunami based on aerial photographs, excavations and subsurface explorations using ground‐penetrating radar at the Osuka coast in Aomori prefecture, Japan. The site is rare because it is a protected area with few and superficial engineering activities, making it suitable for continuous observation of pre‐tsunami, syn‐tsunami and post‐tsunami topographic changes. The findings indicate that the 2011 tsunami waves generated large topographic changes: depositional and erosional features produced by the tsunami can be recognized, respectively, as tsunami deposits and erosional channels across the sand dunes. During the post‐tsunami phase, the sand volume at the coast quickly recovered naturally. Tsunami deposits and the erosional channels were well preserved underground even at 10 years after the event. However, dynamic movement of the dunes started after the tsunami. The shifting was attributable to the artificial clearing of coastal forests rather than the tsunami effects on the coast. Our results first indicate not only that the sedimentary features of paleo‐tsunamis but also the erosional features have some probability of being preserved in the subsurface of the beach and sand dunes at tsunami‐affected areas. Also, artificial activities such as deforestation are much more crucially undermining of the stability of the coastal geomorphology than the tsunami effects: the coast is now reaching a different status from its pre‐tsunami situation. Generalizing the relationship between cyclonic features and storm surges remains challenging because previous studies have produced diverse results for different regions and historical events. We implemented Delft3D‐FM simulations and examined the synthetic effects of translation speed Vt and landfall angle α on maximum surge height (MSH) along an open coast and bay. By simulating idealized cases with varying Vt and α, we found that fast translation of a tropical cyclone (TC) magnified the MSH, with the most extreme MSH occurring when the landfall angle was almost perpendicular to the coastline. In addition, the simultaneous presence of smaller α and slower Vt conditions for a TC can trigger coastally trapped waves arriving ahead of its landfall. The impacts of the Proudman and Greenspan resonances contribute substantially to the MSH, depending on the conditions of the TCs and their topographies. We quantitatively assessed the effect of coastline geometry, and the results revealed that the morphological ratio influenced the MSH. Our findings suggest that the synthetic effects of cyclonic and topographic factors are critical for generating resonance and trapped waves that can modify main surges. The application of our findings from idealized cases to realistic cases based on historical TC indicates their applicability to storm surge risk assessment. Finally, we conducted a factor‐based diagnosis for the rapid evaluation of MSH, which can provide insightful references for future storm surge mitigation. Denmark has been subject to complex interactions of isostatic uplift and eustatic sea level changes since the last deglaciation. Prominent coastal beach ridges as well as lagoonal and lake deposits from this period have been investigated at a number of sites in the region to constrain the relative sea level (RSL) changes. However, despite the common occurrence of former coastal lagoons and lakes in proximity to raised beach ridges, they have rarely been studied in combination. In this study, we use a multiproxy approach including geospatial data, lake sediment coring, ground penetrating radar and optically stimulated luminescence dating to investigate the Holocene coastal evolution and RSL history at Rugård in Mols Bjerge National Park, on the east coast of the Jutland Peninsula. Our results show that the coastal area at Rugård was transgressed between c. 7.6 and 7.0 cal. ka BP and that RSL was ~4.5 m higher than present between c. 6.6 and 5.9 ka ago, when the highest section of the beach ridge plain was deposited. The elevation and timing of this relative highstand are in good agreement with previous estimates of the Littorina transgression and contribute to our combined knowledge about RSL history and coastal evolution in the southern Kattegat. Subsequently, isostatic adjustment has caused uplift and erosion of the beach ridge plain, but renewed progradation and deposition of a lower beach plain have taken place since c. 1740 CE. Coastal tourism has grown significantly across South‐East Asia from the 1960s, particularly in three key destinations hosting large tourist numbers: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. It encompasses different scales from basic backpacker accommodation in budget enclaves to large scale capital‐intensive luxury resort enclaves. Coastal tourism studies typically range from descriptive analyses of destinations' evolutionary dynamics and resort morphology to more granular ethnographic inspections of socio‐economic patterns of transformation and resource conflicts. More recent critical research theorizes the spatial reorganization of coastal tourism in relation to economic restructuring processes. Although national tourism policy and economic development is often analysed, forces shaping coastal tourism development have been little examined and research typically focusses on impact case studies without analysing the underlying political economy. This paper interrogates the political‐economic drivers of the historical‐geographical and spatial organization of coastal tourism in these three major destinations and demonstrates how processes of tourism capital accumulation are experienced/contested via intensified commodification leading to increasingly complex and diversified coastal tourism political economies. Invertebrate larvae are often abundant in the surface ocean, which plays a key role in their dispersal and connectivity. Pelagic microhabitats characterized by small‐scale hydrographic variability are complex and ubiquitous in the coastal ocean, but their study is challenging, and they have been largely neglected in meroplankton ecology. Surface convergences, i.e., surface microhabitats featuring convergent horizontal currents, may aggregate the last larval stage of the American lobster and could provide shelter and food for Stage IV postlarvae and thus enhance their condition. We tested these hypotheses by conducting a series of cruises in the southwestern Gulf of Maine in summer 2021, sampling 15 paired sets of potential convergences and off‐convergence unstructured habitat. We measured postlarval abundance, surface hydrography, acoustic backscatter, and circulation. Experiments and image analysis compared condition, color, and morphology of postlarvae sampled inside and outside potential convergences. Potential convergences varied in near‐surface hydrographic patterns, with most displaying consistency among two transects and diverse patterns in salinity and temperature (e.g., across‐convergence gradients with equal or different signs). While the highest postlarval abundances were found in convergences, abundance patterns on and off convergences were not consistent, and another analysis indicated higher abundance in convergences than in a 7‐year untargeted surface ocean data set. Experiments indicated no survivorship differences among convergence and non‐convergence individuals at two temperatures, while image analyses revealed differences in color and size. Physical measurements and qualitative neuston community analyses indicated substantial heterogeneity among potential convergences. Our results reinforce that small‐scale heterogeneities are highly variable but important to the ecology of meroplankton, including the pelagic and neustonic habitats where lobster postlarvae are abundant. Objective: In the western United States, juvenile salmon Oncorhynchus spp. and steelhead O. mykiss are especially vulnerable to streamflow depletion in the dry season. Releasing water from off‐channel storage into small streams is a novel restoration strategy to offset impacts from anthropogenic flow alteration on salmonid fishes. To date, no studies have evaluated the ecological effects of small‐scale flow augmentations. Here, we quantify the effects of one such augmentation project on habitat connectivity, water quality, invertebrate drift, and juvenile salmonid movement and survival. Methods: Our study took place in a northern California stream and included an unusually wet summer (2019) and a more typical dry summer (2020). We used categorical and time‐series analyses in a before–after, control–impact (BACI) design, along with capture–mark–recapture methods to evaluate the ecological impacts of a 13.9‐L/s flow augmentation. Result: We found that differences in ambient streamflows between the two years mediated the physical and ecological effects of the flow augmentation treatment. In the dry year, habitat connectivity and dissolved oxygen markedly increased at sites over 1.5 km downstream from the point of augmentation, whereas during the wet year, the effects on those variables were negligible. In both years, invertebrate drift marginally increased after augmentation. Interpool movement of wild juvenile steelhead and stocked Coho Salmon O. kisutch increased after augmentation during the dry summer but not during the wet summer. Flow augmentation increased the survival probability for salmonids, with a larger effect during the dry summer (24% higher survival for Coho Salmon and 20% higher survival for steelhead) than during the wet summer (no effect was observed for steelhead survival, and Coho Salmon survival increased by 11%). Conclusion: This study indicates that appropriately designed small‐scale flow augmentations can improve conditions for rearing salmonids in small streams, particularly during dry years. More broadly, it provides empirical evidence that efforts to restore summer streamflow in small, salmon‐bearing streams can yield significant ecological benefits. Objective: Alewife Alosa pseudoharengus and Blueback Herring A. aestivalis, collectively referred to as river herring, are anadromous clupeids inhabiting the North American Atlantic coast. Although the seasonal patterns of their spawning migration are well studied and predictable, the fine‐scale movements are still poorly resolved. Methods: This study used high‐resolution acoustic imaging to study the fine‐scale behavior of river herring during their spring spawning migration in two coastal rivers in Massachusetts, United States. Result: Observations suggest that seasonal patterns of migration appear to be influenced by temperature, while fine‐scale patterns in migration were associated with the time of day, tidal state, and their interaction. River herring were consistently observed during both day and night, with elevated peaks of activity in the early morning and late afternoon. Daytime movement consisted of the intermittent passage of large, dense schools, while nighttime movement consisted of the frequent passage of individuals or small groups. The highest numbers of herring observations were associated with flood and high tides. Additionally, the interactions between time of day and tidal state resulted in synergistic positive effects during crepuscular incoming tides, which were favorable to movement, and synergistic negative effects during midday low tides, which inhibited fish movement. Conclusion: The changing relationship between the time of day and tidal state within the season manifested in changing periodicity in fish movement to correlate with favorable movement conditions. Since movements may be related to both time of day and tide, previous run size estimates from visual counts made only during the day may be too low. Sampling methodologies that collect information during all 24 h would likely produce the most accurate run size estimates. This study highlights the need to view river herring migration in a holistic context predicated by multiple environmental and biological factors that vary at several temporal scales (i.e., seasonally, daily, and hourly). This series of perspective pieces will touch on some of these challenges, potential solutions, and knowledge gaps that we must consider in supporting and understanding algae in the Anthropocene. The suitable spawning habitat of Tachypleus tridentatus was estimated and mapped for the first time using scientific modelling in Tsuyazaki, Fukuoka, Japan. A total of 43 nests were found at five sites from 2018 to 2019. Of these 43 nests, the location information of nine nests at one of the sites was used as 'Training data' for constructing the models.A series of procedures was employed to determine the relationship between the biological data and their physical parameters to estimate the suitable spawning habitat. First, the contribution rates of the physical parameters (beach elevation, slope and sediment) to nest locations were evaluated. Second, physical parameters that showed significant contribution rates were chosen to estimate suitable spawning habitats.It was found that the beach elevation was the most significant parameter for estimating suitable spawning habitats. Mean high water neap to mean higher high water was estimated as suitable spawning habitat, and 74% of the nests were fitted in an area assessed as suitable. The result was consistent with previous studies.The area of suitable spawning habitat was estimated to be only 476 m2 out of 1943 m2, comprising 24% of the sandy beach in the study site. Therefore, it was concluded that the conservation and restoration of spawning grounds is a high‐priority and urgent issue at the site.It is proposed that scientific modelling of nest/egg occurrence and beach elevation can effectively determine suitable spawning habitats. Thus, it is possible to quickly establish the habitat most suitable for spawning in coastal environments and help plan conservation strategies for this globally endangered species. Tidal wetlands undergoing regular tidal inundation contribute more than 60% CO2 uptake of the coastal ocean. However, a comprehensive understanding of tidal microbial spatial distribution is poorly known, giving rise to previously ignored perturbations of microbial biomass in heterogeneous nearshore aquifers. In most traditional reactive models of nearshore aquifers until now, the spatio‐temporal production of microbial biomass was not considered, and reaction rates depended only on the first‐order decay of nutrient inputs. Here, using a biomass‐based model with tidal fluctuations, we identify autotrophic and heterotrophic high biomass zones that can dictate the hot spots of aerobic respiration, nitrification, and denitrification. Crucially, the accretive microbial biomass in eutrophic environments may minimize the hydraulic conductivity and weaken the tide‐driven upper saline plume, but slightly enhance seawater wedge intrusion. In addition, our simulations recreated empirical patterns of N removal in contaminated subterranean estuaries and led to a description of general rules of autotrophic and heterotrophic processes in sediments. Our findings point to previously ignored perturbations of microbial biomass to reactions in nearshore aquifers and underscore that the microbial distribution in coastal sediments has its inherent regularity to environmental alteration. Objective: Population demographics of trout were analyzed across multiple spatial scales to evaluate fishery resources in the three forks and main stem of the upper Snoqualmie River, Washington. Physical habitat and trout species compositions, relative abundances, and sizes were assessed through spatially continuous sampling of the watershed. Fish were also sampled at the segment scale (5–20 km) for more detailed but spatially intermediate assessments of species and genetic origin, size at age, and seasonal diet. To evaluate growth conditions during summer months, bioenergetics simulations of consumption by trout were run using summer water temperatures, and growth and diets were sampled at two life stages. Result: We found high variability in longitudinal species compositions, genetic origins, relative abundances, and densities within and among forks. While annual growth generally decreased with distance upstream, summer growth efficiency consistently increased. Areal density estimates of age‐0 recruits in the North and Middle forks generally increased with segment elevation, whereas density of recruits was relatively low in upper elevations of the South Fork, where nonnative Westslope Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi were most abundant. Abundance of trout varied widely among the forks, and a native metapopulation of Coastal Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii was the most abundantly distributed species across interconnected main‐stem habitats. Conclusion: Factors affecting population demographics of trout at the riverscape scale included geologic barriers, habitat diversity, and stocking practices, while summer growth was primarily affected by water temperature. Merging riverscape‐ and intermediate‐scale sampling enhanced watershed‐scale inferences made from intermediate sampling while accounting for continuous variability. This design provided a holistic assessment of the trout resources that would not have been possible using either site‐specific sampling or continuous longitudinal surveys and provided a baseline assessment of trout resources in the upper Snoqualmie River watershed for continued management and conservation of the fishery. Grain size affects the rates of aeolian sediment transport on beaches. Sediment in coastal environments typically consists of multiple grain‐size fractions and exhibits spatiotemporal variations. Still, conceptual and numerical aeolian transport models are simplified and often only include a single fraction that is constant over the model domain. It is unclear to what extent this simplification is valid and if the inclusion of multi‐fraction transport and spatial grain‐size variations affects aeolian sediment transport simulations and predictions of coastal dune development. This study applies the numerical aeolian sediment transport model AeoLiS to compare single‐fraction to multi‐fraction approaches for a range of grain‐size distributions and spatial grain‐size scenarios. The results show that on timescales of days to years, single‐fraction simulations with the median grain size, D50, often give similar results to multi‐fraction simulations, provided the wind is able to mobilize all fractions within that time frame. On these timescales, vertical variability in grain size has a limited effect on total transport rates, but it does influence the simulation results on minute timescales. Horizontal grain‐size variability influences both the total transport rates and the downwind bed grain‐size composition. The results provide new insights into the influence of beach sediment composition and spatial variability on total transport rates toward the dunes. The findings of this study can guide the implementation of grain‐size variability in numerical aeolian sediment transport models. Predictable aggregations of large marine mammals are valuable conservation targets, but aggregated populations can also be exposed to site‐level threats.The globally vulnerable Dugong dugon has a wide distribution but is found in large numbers mainly in Australia and the Arabian Gulf. Though Australian dugong populations are well studied, much less is known of the dugongs in the Arabian Gulf.The spatial and temporal persistence of dugongs around Bahrain, with a focus on large dugong groups (>50 dugongs), was determined using an occupancy modelling framework supported by historical records, structured interviews, citizen science network reports, and small‐scale boat and unmanned aerial vehicle surveys.Historical records and current distributional studies confirmed that large dugong groups have been reliably sighted around Hawar Island (Bahrain) since at least 1986, forming large, clumped groups that persist almost year round. The largest recorded so far in the world, these fluid groups (maximum of ~700 dugongs) account for ~60% of the dugongs found in Bahrain and ~12% of all dugongs in the Arabian Gulf.The delineated occupancy core area of large dugong groups (~145 km2) straddles the Bahrain–Qatar border, reflecting the transboundary nature of these groups.Careful management of human‐induced stressors (in particular, fishing, boating, and coastal development) combined with regular monitoring of Hawar Island's large dugong groups and their seagrass habitat is critical to safeguard this globally important population.The effectiveness of any conservation management is predicated on strengthening cooperation among all range states in the Arabian Gulf. Connecting the Bohai Sea (BS) and Yellow Sea (YS), the Bohai Strait is vital in controlling physical‐biogeochemical conditions in the East Asian marginal seas. In August 2019, Typhoon Lekima moved northward inland into eastern China and caused drastic water exchange through the Bohai Strait. The specific variation and underlying dynamics involved were investigated with observations and high‐resolution numerical simulations. Volume transport featured an intense inflow followed by an intense outflow, with a fluctuation magnitude of 1.88 Sv, which was much greater than the seasonal‐interannual variations. The corresponding current patterns presented three phases: strait‐wide inflow, strait‐wide outflow, and outflow in the south and inflow in the north. The strait‐wide inflow was driven by strong east‐northeasterly winds through local Ekman dynamics. The strait‐wide outflow resulted from the dynamic adjustment of ocean currents accompanying the rapid weakening of easterly winds. The third current pattern was part of a large‐scale cyclonic circulation in the BS and North YS and was governed by different factors in the southern and northern straits. Further comparisons indicated that transport caused by winter storms and other typhoons in the year had opposite phase variations to that caused by Lekima. The underlying dynamics mainly involved local Ekman dynamics and/or remote wind forcing via the propagation of coastal trapped waves but could differ greatly from events. Finally, we found that to a large extent, geostrophic transport derived from the sea surface height difference across the Bohai Strait could be used as actual transport during synoptic weather events. During the 1990s, coastal habitat off southeastern Massachusetts (SEMA) supported commercially viable fisheries for American lobster (Homarus americanus). Over the past two decades, landings and post‐larval settlement of lobsters in this region, which is near the southern edge of the species' range, have declined substantially, concurrent with a period of significant warming of the coastal waters off southern New England. Previous work has suggested that rising ocean temperatures may adversely impact the survival of larval and early benthic phase (EBP) lobsters and may cause adult lobsters to seek cooler offshore waters during the critical time of larval release. To investigate the manner in which the observed decline in lobster abundance may be linked to warming coastal waters, a high‐resolution hydrodynamic model was used to quantify the increase in water temperature experienced by EBP lobster off SEMA and to supply input to an individual‐based model of lobster larval transport from release areas delineated using fishery‐dependent data of late‐stage egg‐bearing lobsters. The results indicate that rising coastal water temperatures may have adversely impacted EBP lobster recruitment off SEMA by (1) causing an offshore shift in the area of larval release that resulted in a reduction in the delivery of larvae to suitable nearshore EBP habitat and (2) dramatically increasing thermal stress experienced by recently settled EBP lobsters. These findings highlight the implications of warming coastal waters on southern New England lobster population connectivity and provide insight to an understudied mechanism by which climate change affects marine species recruitment. Although it is well established that human activities are linked to the loss of seagrasses worldwide, the influence of anthropogenic disturbances on the habitat fragmentation of seagrass meadows is less understood. This information is essential to identify how humans are modifying seascapes and what disturbances pose the greatest risk to seagrasses, which is pertinent given the rapid urbanization occurring in coastal areas.This study examined how the habitat fragmentation of an endangered seagrass Posidonia australis varied in relation to several anthropogenic disturbances (i.e. human population, marine infrastructure, terrestrial run‐off and catchment land‐usage) within 10 estuaries across 620 km of coastline in New South Wales, Australia.When comparing between estuaries, the fragmentation of P. australis meadows was significantly greater in estuaries adjacent to highly populated metropolitan centres – generally in the Greater Sydney region. At sites within estuaries, the density of boat moorings was the most important predictor of habitat fragmentation, but there was also evidence of higher fragmentation with increased numbers of jetties and oyster aquaculture leases.These results suggest that the fragmentation of seagrass meadows will become more pervasive as the human population continues to grow and estuarine development increases. Strategies to mitigate anthropogenic disturbances on seagrass meadow fragmentation could include prohibiting the construction of boat moorings and other artificial structures in areas where seagrasses are present or promoting environmentally friendly designs for marine infrastructure. An Afro‐indigenous population, the Gullah/Geechee have deep roots in the federally designated Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, an area of sea islands and coastal Lowcountry within 25 coastal counties in North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. We identify legal vulnerabilities associated with heirs property, in particular tax sales and predatory partition actions, as mechanisms used within the legal system to dispossess owners of their land. Our use of CRT allows us to understand heirs property as a legacy of the Jim Crow era and to recognize material motivations behind continued racial discrimination that has led to involuntary land loss. Overwash is the cross‐shore transport of water and sediment from a waterbody over the crest of a sand or gravel barrier beach, and washover is the resulting sedimentary deposit. Washover volume, and alongshore patterns of washover distribution, are fundamental components of sediment budgets for low‐lying coastal barrier systems. Accurate sediment budgets are essential to forecasting barrier system sustainability under future climate‐driven forcing. However, comprehensive surveys of three‐dimensional washover morphology are challenging to deliver. Here, we use the results of a physical experiment, analysis of lidar data, and examples of washover characteristics reported in the literature to develop scaling relationships for washover morphometry that demonstrate volume can be reasonably inferred from planform measurements, for washover in natural (non‐built) and built barrier settings. Gaining three‐dimensional insight into washover deposits from two‐dimensional information unlocks the ability to analyze past aerial imagery and estimate contributions from washover flux to sediment budgets for past storms. Plain Language Summary: When a coastal storm drives water up and over the crest of a beach, sediment gets picked up by the flow and deposited behind the beach. That deposit, which might settle among dunes, on a marsh, or on the streets of a neighborhood, is called washover. Knowing the total volume of washover delivered by a storm event helps coastal managers account for the amount of sediment that moves through a beach system over time, known as a sediment budget. An accurate sediment budget provides an indication of environmental functioning and sustainability. Here, we created washover deposits in a laboratory and compared them to washover in field settings to show that the area of a washover deposit is a good predictor of its volume. Climate‐driven distributional shifts have been well‐documented for fisheries resources along the East Coast of the United States, yet little attention has been given to adjacent estuarine systems. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the continental United States and serves as important habitat for a diversity of fishes and invertebrates, many of which are seasonal residents. Survey data indicate that relative abundance of finfish in Chesapeake Bay has diminished substantially, while coastwide stock status has remained unchanged. In response to warming, seasonal estuarine residents may remain in coastal waters or inhabit a northerly estuary, but the extent to which changing environmental conditions may drive exchange between the coastal ocean and estuarine systems remains unresolved. This study analyzed data collected from 2008 to 2019 by three fisheries‐independent trawl surveys to explore temporal patterns and associated environmental drivers of the estuarine–coastal ocean exchange in the Mid‐Atlantic for eight economically and ecologically important species. Relative habitat utilization of Chesapeake Bay declined for most species, while utilization patterns for Delaware Bay were largely constant or increasing over time. Broad‐scale, multispecies analyses of relative habitat utilization time series revealed that the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) was an important driver of Chesapeake Bay exchange, but that average Apr/May coastal ocean bottom temperature was significant for Delaware Bay. Collectively, the results demonstrate that several Mid‐Atlantic species have altered their estuarine habitat use over time, climate drivers associated with estuarine–coastal ocean exchange operate on different time scales, and that the impacts of warming within the Mid‐Atlantic vary spatially. The US federal government has implemented a variety of policies and subsidies that help coastal development remain viable, including investments in risk reduction measures, subsidized flood insurance, and post‐disaster assistance. In this study, we explored how the removal of federal subsidies impacts coastal development patterns by measuring the causal effect of the US Coastal Barrier Resources Act (CBRA) on building activity. Implemented in 1982, CBRA withdrew eligibility for federal funding for infrastructure, post‐disaster assistance, and subsidized flood insurance along designated sections of coastal barriers ("CBRA units"). Using a novel built‐structures dataset, we employed a spatial regression discontinuity design to compare development rates within and outside of CBRA units in 1980 and 2016. We found that enactment of the CBRA has resulted in significant reductions in development activity: indeed, development rates were reduced by more than 75% in CBRA areas as compared to non‐CBRA areas. Our findings suggest that policies like CBRA can be effective at slowing development in other sensitive or hazardous areas, and could help to preserve natural environments for habitat conservation and climate adaptation purposes. Despite the large size and economic value of the species, populations of oceanic manta ray (Mobula birostris) are often poorly studied and almost completely undescribed in the Red Sea. Here, photo‐identification (photo‐ID) was used to provide the first description of M. birostris movement patterns and population demographics for the northern Red Sea.Images collated from social media, researchers, and photo‐ID databases from 2004 to 2021 identified 267 individual M. birostris from 395 sightings in Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan. Sexual parity was observed in the population with 134 females, 111 males, and 22 individuals of undetermined sex. Nearly half of the individuals in this study were first identified through social media searches, highlighting the value of the sightings data collected by the public.The regular presence of juveniles in Sharm el‐Sheikh, Egypt, indicates that this area is a potential nursery, which is the second identified for this species globally and the first in the Indo‐Pacific. Encounter data from this study recorded the first known movements of juvenile M. birostris and demonstrate that they can travel long distances of at least 525 km.Within the recorded population, 24.7% (n = 67) of individuals were resighted, including 21 oceanic manta rays that were encountered in more than one location. These records reveal long‐distance migrations of up to 700 km and confirm the international connectivity of M. birostris in the Red Sea. The lagged identification rate data are best fitted with an open‐population model, implying that the northern Red Sea is represented by one well‐mixed population.The baseline data presented here should encourage the expansion of directed research and citizen science initiatives for M. birostris. Increased knowledge of movement patterns and site use will be crucial to successfully protecting this endangered species in a region characterized by high levels of shipping traffic, unregulated fisheries, and extensive coastal development. We investigate georeferenced household‐level data consisting of up to 128,609 individuals living in 11,261 localities across 17 coastal sub‐Saharan African countries over 20 years. We analyze the relevance of coastal proximity, measured by the geographic distance to harbors, as a predictor of individual economic living standards. Our setting allows us to account for country‐time fixed effects as well as individual‐specific controls. Results reveal that individuals living further away from the coast are significantly poorer, measured along an array of welfare indicators. Our findings are robust to the inclusion of other geographic covariates of development such as climate (e.g., temperature, precipitation) or terrain conditions (e.g., ruggedness, land suitability). We also explore mechanisms through which coastal proximity may matter for individual welfare and decompose the estimated effect of coastal proximity via formal mediation analysis. In this study, we investigate the relative contributions of dynamical forcings, particularly the eastern and central‐western Pacific winds, and thermodynamical forcings to the evolution of the 2017 extreme coastal El Niño using observations and modeling experiments. We show that the competing effects of anomalous eastern Pacific westerlies and central‐western Pacific easterlies and their resulting downwelling and upwelling equatorial Kelvin waves are essential for the evolution of the event, together with alongshore anomalous northerlies which suppress coastal upwelling and reduce latent heat release as discussed in previous studies. We find that eastern Pacific zonal wind anomalies are about twice as effective in generating a coastal response as central‐western Pacific anomalies, thus compensating for their usually smaller magnitude. While the 2017 event exemplified these competing effects, they were also found to be important in other coastal and basin‐scale El Niño events, thus contributing to the mechanisms responsible for El Niño diversity. Jamaica, like most Small Island Developing States around the world, is at high risk of coastal hazards due to its exposure to tropical storms, high levels of coastal development, vulnerable coastal communities, and the predicted impacts of climate change. Environmental degradation has been linked to increased vulnerability to disasters. Nature‐based Solutions, although not formally present in the literature, are being implemented at various scales in Jamaica. This paper presents an overview of three marine and coastal Nature‐based Solutions being utilised in the country: protected area management (Special Fishery Conservation Areas); mangrove restoration; and coral restoration. The paper briefly reviews their current application in Jamaica before arguing that these conservation projects that traditionally focused on biodiversity have co‐benefits as Nature‐based Solutions for disaster resilience. The paper closes by outlining several research objectives that should be explored in the future to further the implementation of Nature‐based Solutions for disaster resilience in Jamaica. Production of octopus fisheries is highly variable typically due to their sensitivity to environmental conditions. Using data from four scientific research cruises conducted in 2016 and 2017, we studied the influence of the environment on the relative abundance and distribution of two co‐occurring octopus species, Octopus americanus (merobenthic) and O. maya (holobenthic), at the eastern part of the continental shelf of the Campeche Bank, a tropical upwelling area. By means of fitting hierarchical Bayesian spatio‐temporal models, we found that the relative abundance of both species decreased with depth and when salinity and temperature were higher. The residual spatial distribution showed that variability in space for both species differed between seasons. In summer, when upwelling conditions dominate, O. americanus was abundant at the eastern part of the continental shelf, while O. maya dominated in the north‐east and the coastal zone of Yucatan. In winter, when mixing conditions characterize the water column, O. americanus was abundant in coastal waters of Quintana Roo towards the north‐west, whereas O. maya occurred mostly to the north‐east. Additionally, the body weight of O. americanus decreased with depth, rocky bottoms and winter, while O. maya was smaller in shallower waters, sandy bottoms and summer. Overall, both species showed greater affinity for less saline and cooler waters, indicative of upwelling conditions. The spatial distribution differed between species and between sizes. We suggest that the ontogenetic differences would be associated with their distinct dispersal capacity during their early stages that would be under the influence of the Loop Current. Submarine landslides are a major marine geohazard affecting resilience of offshore infrastructure and coastal urban centers. Attention has previously been paid to quantifying post‐failure dynamics of catastrophic submarine debris flows and their consequences. However, pre‐failure initiation and growth of a small slip surface evolving into a large submarine landslide are still less understood. This study aims to explore the physical failure mechanism of submarine landslides initiated from small slip surfaces and to quantify key features of failure evolution. They are achieved by modeling the entire three‐dimensional (3D) landslide evolution, integrating the initiation and growth of slip surface, failure of slab above the slip surface, post‐failure mass movement and re‐deposition of transported sediments, using a novel numerical method. The characteristics of the slip surface growth within a favored layer and the patterns of the slab failure in the overlying layer have been thoroughly discussed. The transition from the pre‐failure slip surface growth to the diverse post‐failure mass movement are first observed and discussed with the 3D geometry effects, revealing the complex cascading mass movement mechanisms. The criterion for unstable growth of a planar slip surface and critical condition for slab failure are proposed. The findings from the study facilitate scientific understanding of the evolution of historic events and help safeguarding offshore developments against submarine landslide recurrence. Plain Language Summary: A submarine landslide can impact a seafloor area as large as over 1,000 km2 and trigger catastrophic tsunami waves, but originate from a relatively small initiation zone, spreading within a "sandwiched" weak layer. The physical mechanism behind the failure extension is difficult to assess even with the help of state‐of‐the‐art geophysical and geological investigations. To close the knowledge gap, we investigate the entire submarine landslide evolution from the pre‐failure initiation to post‐failure mass movement using a novel numerical method. From our modeling, we find that the catastrophic growth of a slip surface along a weak layer, together with slab failure extension, could lead to very large submarine landslides. For example, upon certain conditions, a slip surface with an initial size of around only 100 m2 can grow at considerable speeds and becomes as large as >100 km2 within minutes. We also reveal key features controlling the development of the slip surface growth and its transition into the slab failure, and hence quantify different phases of failure evolution. The numerical replication of the submarine landslide evolution improves the understanding of the complex cascading mass movement of submarine landslides, and can facilitate safe marine and coastal developments, for example, for offshore renewables. Forage fish are a critical component of marine ecosystems because they integrate energy across trophic levels within marine food webs. Many studies have highlighted the importance of this group, and past research efforts have focused largely on studying forage fish within offshore and estuarine areas. In contrast, limited information is available for forage fish on the inner continental shelf (<50 m water depth), where they encounter a range of anthropogenic stressors and support critical apex predator populations, including species of conservation concern. We highlight the importance of forage fish within inner shelf marine ecosystems using examples from the Northern California Current and describe outstanding research needs for forage fish within this topical area. Addressing these research needs is a critical step for maintaining productive forage fish populations within inner shelf ecosystems considering the social‐, management‐, and climate‐driven changes that are expected to impact coastal regions in the coming decades. This purpose of this article is to demonstrate (1) how growing seaweed in the central Philippines is affected by multifaceted local dynamics and (2) how it is also dependent on the complementary livelihood strategies of in situ and ex situ diversification. This article explores the livelihood trajectories of 45 households that were all engaged in growing seaweed in 2015. Surveys and semi‐structured interviews were conducted with households and key informants in two municipalities. Results reveal a process of livelihood divergence. While in one municipality growing seaweed has become a relative success, virtually all households in the other municipality have had to stop growing seaweed, returned to fishing, and remained poor. The reasons for this divergence can be found in the spheres of environmental challenges, value chain governance dynamics, and local coastal governance. The franciscana dolphin, Pontoporia blainvillei, is one of the most threatened cetaceans in the Southwestern Atlantic. Within their limited coastal range off Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil, franciscanas face human activities, including artisanal gillnet fishing and coastal development. A lack of information on ranging patterns, population structure, and behavior for informing management led to efforts to develop and apply approaches to tag franciscanas in Argentina (Bahía Samborombón [BS], Bahía San Blas [BSB]) and Brazil (Baía Babitonga [BB]) during 2005–2013. Findings from VHF tags deployed in BS in 2005 during feasibility tests for catching and handling franciscanas for tagging suggested residency over periods of weeks. Subsequently, satellite‐linked tags confirmed patterns of residency at each site. Home range size varied, with ranges of 5–7 km2 for BB, 51–312 km2 for BS, and 49–1,014 km2 for BSB. Diving patterns varied across sites, with the animals using the entire water column, exposing them to fishing nets regardless of the depth at which the nets were set. Tracking durations and follow‐up observations indicated that this research approach is useful for studies of franciscanas. Small, definable ranges facilitate relating specific geographically based threats to appropriate population units, increasing the potential for effective conservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The valuable ecosystem services of salt marshes are spurring marsh restoration projects around the world. However, it is difficult to determine the final vegetated area based on physical drivers. Herein, we use a 3D fully coupled vegetation‐hydrodynamic‐morphological modeling system to simulate the final vegetation cover and the timescale to reach it under various forcing conditions. Marsh development in our simulations can be divided in three distinctive phases: A preparation phase characterized by sediment accumulation in the absence of vegetation, an encroachment phase in which the vegetated area grows, and an adjustment phase in which the vegetated area remains relatively constant while marsh accretes vertically to compensate for sea level rise. Sediment concentration, settling velocity, sea level rise, and tidal range each comparably affect equilibrium coverage and timescale in different ways. Our simulations show that the Unvegetated‐Vegetated Ratio also relates to sediment budget in marsh development under most conditions.
