High spatio‐temporal variability is a characteristic of extreme rainfall. In mountainous regions like the Tropical Andes, where intricate orography and mesoscale atmospheric dynamics greatly impact rainfall systems, this particularly holds for mountain areas like the Tropical Andes. Thus, the absence of operational rainfall monitoring networks with high spatio‐temporal resolution has imposed difficulties for a proper analysis of extreme rainfall events in the Ecuadorian Andes. Nowhere, we present our improved knowledge on rainfall extremes based on newly available rainfall radar data of this region. In our study we employ a clustering approach to identify types of extreme rainfall events and analyze their spatio‐temporal characteristics. Based on 3 years of data obtained from an X‐band scanning weather radar data, the study was conducted in the southern Ecuadorian Tropical Andes at 4450 m a.s.l. By applying a rainfall threshold, 67 extreme rainfall events were selected. The rainfall characteristics of each extreme rainfall event, such as the amount of rain, its duration, its hour, and month of occurrence were determined and used as input variables of a k‐means clustering analysis to group the events into different classes. The result revealed three main classes of extreme rainfall events. The first class is characterized by highest rain intensity and lowest duration. The second class is characterized by its month of occurrence, during the first 5 months of the year. The third class showed lowest rain intensity and highest duration mainly occurred at higher elevations. This article discusses the use of spatial and temporal visualization techniques to understand the production and transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in a high-elevation Andean catchment. The authors introduce a new model called STARR-DOC, which simulates the dynamics of DOC alongside water movement. The study focuses on the Zhurucay catchment and provides visualizations of water movement and DOC production in different soil types. The findings suggest that the production of DOC is influenced by soil water content, with the valley bottom areas exhibiting faster response times compared to the hillslopes. The visualization helps to identify areas within the catchment that have higher or lower DOC production and transport under different meteorological conditions. [Extracted from the article]

Tropical mountains such as the páramos of the Andes, which serve as 'water towers' for local communities and downstream cities, are important areas for early detection of climate change. Here, fog and low‐intensity rainfall are very common and play a key role in ecohydrological processes. Although evapotranspiration (ET) represents an important part of the water cycle, how ET and fog processes interact and how they affect páramo vegetation and water resources availability are poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of foggy (fog only) and mixed (fog and rainfall) conditions on ET. To determine whether fog significantly reduces ET, we compared ET and meteorological data under these two conditions with those during dry days. We found that on foggy days, when fog was most prevalent in the early morning, ET declined on average by 4% and net radiation (Rn) by 9.2%. Under mixed conditions, daily ET declined by 42% and Rn by 33%. In the páramo, where mean annual precipitation and ET are 1210 and 635 mm, respectively, the estimated annual reduction in ET due to fog and rainfall combined is between 77 and 174 mm. We found that during fog and rainfall mixed conditions, solar radiation was reduced, consequently constraining the energy available for ET while sustaining high relative humidity, ultimately reducing water loss. Our findings, which suggest that the presence of fog and low‐intensity rainfall restricts water losses by evaporative demand, contribute to a better understanding of the ecohydrological importance of these water inputs in the Andes. Tracer‐aided rainfall‐runoff modelling is a promising tool for understanding catchment hydrology, particularly when tracers provide information about coupled hydrological‐biogeochemical processes. Such models allow for predicting the quality and quantity of water under changing climatic and anthropogenic conditions. Here, we present the Spatially‐distributed Tracer‐Aided Rainfall‐Runoff model with a coupled biogeochemical reactive tracer module (STARR‐DOC) to simulate dissolved organic carbon (DOC) dynamics and sources. The STARR‐DOC model was developed and tested for a humid high Andean ecosystem (páramo) using high‐resolution hourly DOC and hydrometeorological data to simulate hourly discharge and DOC at a fine spatial (10 × 10 m) resolution. Overall, the model was able to acceptably reproduce discharge (KGE ~ 0.45) and stream DOC (KGE ~ 0.69) dynamics. Spatially distributed DOC simulations were independently compared using point DOC measurements for different soil types across the catchment, which allowed for identifying DOC production hot spots and hot moments. Results showed higher hydrological connectivity between slopes and valleys with increasing precipitation. Wetter conditions also favoured DOC production (wet month = 82 mg L−1, dry month = 5 mg L−1) and transport to the stream network (DOC concentrations: during events ~15 mg L−1, during baseflows ~4 mg L−1). Our results also suggest that minor changes in meteorological conditions directly affect páramo soil water dynamics and biogeochemistry. Knowledge of when and where DOC production in mountain catchments is greatest is important for water managers to understand when they make decisions about water security, especially considering climate change predictions for the Andean region. Understanding precipitation and its relation with atmospheric and oceanic conditions is vital in the face of climate change. This is crucial in the Tropical Andes (TA) because millions of people depend on water originated in the cordillera. Unfortunately, the paucity of meteorological monitoring that exists in mountainous regions is accentuated in the tropics. In this context, climate indices, remotely sensed, and gridded datasets, are useful tools to study climate and precipitation in the TA, and additional climate indices can be calculated from reanalysis datasets. The combination of this information with traditional indices has the potential to improve our understanding of precipitation. Our objective was to use the k‐means algorithm to regionalize precipitation in the TA (different regions have different climate), and then use the random forest algorithm to study the variables related to precipitation in each of these regions in seasonal timescales. Here, we show the suitability of the random forest algorithm to reveal climate processes and the high potential of the novel climate indices to improve the regressions. We found that convective available potential energy was the most important variable for precipitation in the northern TA, except for the Chocó, where v at 850 hPa was the most important one. Meanwhile, vertical integral of divergence of moisture flux was the most important one in the southern TA. Interestingly, in the DJF season when the South American low‐level jet (SALLJ) is more active, u and v at 850 hPa showed their lowest relative importance and the total column of water vapour showed its maximum, this could indicate that precipitation anomalies are controlled by atmospheric moisture availability rather than by the speed of the SALLJ during DJF. These results deepen our understanding of precipitation anomalies in the TA and the related oceanic and atmospheric conditions. In tropical highlands of the northern Andes, known as páramos, fog incidence is very frequent. Its quantification is not yet clear, mostly because of the complexity of distinguishing between fog and low‐intensity rainfall. Moreover, there is uncertainty about the performance of the various types of gauges used to capture fog in this ecosystem. This study was carried out at the Zhurucay Ecohydrological Observatory (3,800 m a.s.l.), in southern Ecuador, assessing two cylindrical (Juvik and Wire Harp types) and two flat‐screen fog collection gauges. A high‐resolution laser disdrometer was installed next to the fog gauges, to measure precipitation of very low intensities and isolate fog from rainfall. We collected data over a 12‐month period for four types of events—fog only, fog dominant, fog non‐dominant and fog negligible. We evaluated the performance of the gauges during each type of event as well as to estimate the amount, rate and duration of fog. Fog was present during 68% of the days of the study, predominantly in the early morning and at night, and the average daily contribution was 1.37 mm. Most of the events occurred at rates below 0.3 mm h−1. Measured rainfall was 1,200.1 mm, and fog estimations amounted to 340.1 mm. This fog contribution could bring total annual precipitation to about 1,540.2 mm, suggesting an extra 22% of water potentially available to the ecosystem—a very important asset for hydrological and ecological processes. The problem of discharge forecasting using precipitation as input is still very active in Hydrology, and has a plethora of approaches to its solution. But, when the objective is to simulate discharge values without considering the phenomenology behind the processes involved, Artificial Neural Networks, ANN give good results. However, the question of how the black box internally solve this problem remains open. In this research, the classical rainfall‐runoff problem is approached considering that the total discharge is a sum of components of the hydrological system, which from the ANN perspective is translated to the sum of three signals related to the fast, middle and slow flow. Thus, the present study has two aims (a) to study the time‐frequency representation of discharge by an ANN hydrologic model and (b) to study the capabilities of ANN to additively decompose total river discharge. This study adds knowledge to the open problem of the physical interpretability of black‐box models, which remains very limited. The results show that total discharge is adequately simulated in the time frequency domain, although less power spectrum is evident during the rainy seasons in the ANN model, due to fast flow underestimation. The wavelet spectrum of discharge represents well the slow, middle and fast flow components of the system with transit times of 256, 12–64 and 2–12 days, respectively. Interestingly, these transit times are remarkably similar to those of the soil water reservoirs of the studied system, a small headwater catchment in the tropical Andes. This result needs further research because it opens the possibility of determining MMT on a fraction of the cost of isotopic based methods. The cross‐power spectrum indicates that the error in the simulated discharge is more related to the misrepresentation of the fast and the middle flow components, despite limitations in the recharge period of the slow flow component. With respect to the representation of individual signals of the slow, middle and fast flows components, the three neurons were uncapable to individually represent such flows. However, the combination of pairs of these signals resemble the dynamics and the spectral content of the aforementioned flows signals. The study of the environmental factors that control evapotranspiration and the components of evapotranspiration leads to a better understanding of the actual evapotranspiration (ET) process that links the functioning of the soil, water and atmosphere. It also improves local, regional and global ET modelling. Globally, few studies so far focussed on the controls and components of ET in alpine grasslands, especially in mountainous sites such as the tussock grasslands located in the páramo biome (above 3300 m a.s.l.). The páramo occupies 35 000 km2 and provides water resources for many cities in the Andes. In this article, we unveiled the controls on ET and provided the first insights on the contribution of transpiration to ET. We found that the wet páramo is an energy‐limited region and net radiation (Rn) is primarily controlling ET. ET was on average 1.7 mm/day. The monthly average evaporative fraction (ET/Rn) was 0.47 and it remained similar for wet and dry periods. The secondary controls on ET were wind speed, aerodynamic resistance and surface resistance that appeared more important for dry periods, where significantly higher ET rates were found (20% increase). During dry events, transpiration was on average 1.5 mm/day (range 0.7–2.7 mm/day), similar to other tussock grasslands in New Zealand (range 0.6–3.3 mm/day). Evidence showed interception contributes more to ET than transpiration. This study sets a precedent towards a better understanding of the evapotranspiration process and will ultimately lead to a better land‐atmosphere fluxes modelling in the tropics. High‐elevation tropical grassland systems, called Páramo, provide essential ecosystem services such as water storage and supply for surrounding and lowland areas. Páramo systems are threatened by climate and land use changes. Rainfall generation processes and moisture transport pathways influencing precipitation in the Páramo are poorly understood but needed to estimate the impact of these changes, particularly during El Niño conditions, which largely affect hydrometeorological conditions in tropical regions. To fill this knowledge gap, we present a stable isotope analysis of rainfall samples collected on a daily to weekly basis between January 2015 and May 2016 during the strongest El Niño event recorded in history (2014–2016) in two Páramo regions of Central America (Chirripó, Costa Rica) and the northern Andes (Cajas, south Ecuador). Isotopic compositions were used to identify how rainfall generation processes (convective and orographic) change seasonally at each study site. Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model (HYSPLIT) air mass back trajectory analysis was used to identify preferential moisture transport pathways to each Páramo site. Our results show the strong influence of north‐east trade winds to transport moisture from the Caribbean Sea to Chirripó and the South American low‐level jet to transport moisture from the Amazon forest to Cajas. These moisture contributions were also related to the formation of convective rainfall associated with the passage of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over Costa Rica and Ecuador during the wetter seasons and to orographic precipitation during the transition and drier seasons. Our findings provide essential baseline information for further research applications of water stable isotopes as tracers of rainfall generation processes and transport in the Páramo and other montane ecosystems in the tropics. Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) climatology, the thermodynamic and dynamical variables, and teleconnections influencing MCSs development are assessed for the Paute basin (PB) in the Ecuadorian Andes from 2000 to 2009. The seasonality of MCSs occurrence shows a bimodal pattern, with higher occurrence during March-April (MA) and October-November (ON), analogous to the regional rainfall seasonality. The diurnal cycle of MCSs shows a clear nocturnal occurrence, especially during the MA and ON periods. Interestingly, despite the higher occurrence of MCSs during the rainy seasons, the monthly size relative frequency remains fairly constant throughout the year. On the east of the PB, the persistent high convective available potential and low convective inhibition values from midday to nighttime are likely related to the nocturnal development of the MCSs. A significant positive correlation between the MCSs occurrence to the west of the PB and the Trans-Niño index was found, suggesting that ENSO is an important source of interannual variability of MCSs frequency with increasing development of MCSs during warm ENSO phases. On the east of the PB, the variability of MCSs is positively correlated to the tropical Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies south of the equator, due to the variability of the Atlantic subtropical anticyclone, showing main departures from this relation when anomalous conditions occur in the tropical Pacific due to ENSO. Abstract: In response to increasing pressures on water resources, watershed services management programs are implemented throughout the tropics. These programs aim to promote land management activities that enhance the quantity and quality of water available to local communities. The success of these programs hinges on our ability to (a) understand the impacts of watershed interventions on ecohydrology; (b) model these impacts and design efficient management programs; and (c) develop strategies to overcome barriers to practical policy development, including resource limitations or the absence of baseline data. In this paper, we review opportunities in ecohydrological science that will help address these three challenges. The opportunities are grouped into measurement techniques, modelling approaches, and access to resources in our hyperconnected world. We then assess management implications of both the knowledge gaps and the new research developments related to the effect of land management. Overall, we stress the importance of policy‐relevant knowledge for implementing efficient and equitable watershed services programs in the tropics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relative importance of catchment's water provenance and flow paths varies in space and time, complicating the conceptualization of the rainfall-runoff responses. We assessed the temporal dynamics in source areas, flow paths, and age by End Member Mixing Analysis (EMMA), hydrograph separation, and Inverse Transit Time Proxies (ITTPs) estimation within a headwater catchment in the Ecuadorian Andes. Twenty-two solutes, stable isotopes, pH, and electrical conductivity from a stream and 12 potential sources were analyzed. Four end-members were required to satisfactorily represent the hydrological system, i.e., rainfall, spring water, and water from the bottom layers of Histosols and Andosols. Water from Histosols in and near the riparian zone was the highest source contributor to runoff throughout the year (39% for the drier season, 45% for the wetter season), highlighting the importance of the water that is stored in the riparian zone. Spring water contributions to streamflow tripled during the drier season, as evidenced by geochemical signatures that are consistent with deeper flow paths rather than shallow interflow through Andosols. Rainfall exhibited low seasonal variation in this contribution. Hydrograph separation revealed that 94% and 84% is preevent water in the drier and wetter seasons, respectively. From low-flow to high-flow conditions, all the sources increased their contribution except spring water. The relative age of stream water decreased during wetter periods, when the contributing area of the riparian zone expands. To improve the current knowledge of the rainfall-runoff phenomena of tropical montane catchments, we explored the usefulness of several hydrological indicators on a nested cloud forest catchment (76.9 km2). The used metrics belong to 5 categories: baseflow mean transit time, physicochemical properties of stream water, land cover, topographic, and hydrometric parameters. We applied diverse statistical techniques for data analysis and to contrast findings. Multiple regression analysis showed that mean transit times of base flow could be efficiently predicted by sodium concentrations (higher during baseflows) and temperatures of stream water, indicating a major influence of geomorphology rather than topographic or land cover characteristics. Principal component analysis revealed that no specific subset of catchment indicators could be identified as prevailing descriptors for all catchments. The agglomerative hierarchical clustering analysis provided concomitant results, implying larger levels of dissimilarity between smaller subcatchments than between larger ones. Overall, results point out an intricate interdependence of diverse processes at surface and subsurface level indicating a high level of heterogeneity. Disregarding heterogeneity of nested or paired catchments could lead to incomplete or misleading conclusions, especially in tropical mountain regions where pronounced spatial and temporal gradients are present. As a consequence of the remote location of the Andean páramo, knowledge on their hydrologic functioning is limited; notwithstanding, these alpine tundra ecosystems act as water towers for a large fraction of the society. Given the harsh environmental conditions in this region, year-round monitoring is cumbersome, and it would be beneficial if the monitoring needed for the understanding of the rainfall-runoff response could be limited in time. To identify the hydrological response and the effect of temporal monitoring, a nested ( n = 7) hydrological monitoring network was set up in the Zhurucay catchment (7.53 km2), south Ecuador. The research questions were as follows: (1) Can event sampling provide similar information in comparison with continuous monitoring, and (2) if so, how many events are needed to achieve a similar degree of information? A subset of 34 rainfall-runoff events was compared with monthly values derived from a continuous monitoring scheme from December 2010 to November 2013. Land cover and physiographic characteristics were correlated with 11 hydrological indices. Results show that despite some distinct differences between event and continuous sampling, both data sets reveal similar information; more in particular, the monitoring of a single event in the rainy season provides the same information as continuous monitoring, while during the dry season, ten events ought to be monitored. Changes in land use and land cover are major drivers of hydrological alteration in the tropical Andes. However, quantifying their impacts is fraught with difficulties because of the extreme diversity in meteorological boundary conditions, which contrasts strongly with the lack of knowledge about local hydrological processes. Although local studies have reduced data scarcity in certain regions, the complexity of the tropical Andes poses a big challenge to regional hydrological prediction. This study analyses data generated from a participatory monitoring network of 25 headwater catchments covering three of the major Andean biomes ( páramo, jalca and puna) and links their hydrological responses to main types of human interventions (cultivation, afforestation and grazing). A paired catchment setup was implemented to evaluate the impacts of change using a 'trading space-for-time' approach. Catchments were selected based on regional representativeness and contrasting land use types. Precipitation and discharge have been monitored and analysed at high temporal resolution for a time period between 1 and 5 years. The observed catchment responses clearly reflect the extraordinarily wide spectrum of hydrological processes of the tropical Andes. They range from perennially humid páramos in Ecuador and northern Peru with extremely large specific discharge and baseflows, to highly seasonal, flashy catchments in the drier punas of southern Peru and Bolivia. The impacts of land use are similarly diverse and their magnitudes are a function of catchment properties, original and replacement vegetation and management type. Cultivation and afforestation consistently affect the entire range of discharges, particularly low flows. The impacts of grazing are more variable but have the largest effect on the catchment hydrological regulation. Overall, anthropogenic interventions result in increased streamflow variability and significant reductions in catchment regulation capacity and water yield, irrespective of the hydrological properties of the original biome. Few high-elevation tropical catchments worldwide are gauged, and even fewer are studied using combined hydrometric and isotopic data. Consequently, we lack information needed to understand processes governing rainfall-runoff dynamics and to predict their influence on downstream ecosystem functioning. To address this need, we present a combination of hydrometric and water stable isotopic observations in the wet Andean páramo ecosystem of the Zhurucay Ecohydrological Observatory (7.53 km2). The catchment is located in the Andes of south Ecuador between 3400 and 3900 m a.s.l. Water samples for stable isotopic analysis were collected during 2 years (May 2011-May 2013), while rainfall and runoff measurements were continuously recorded since late 2010. The isotopic data reveal that andosol soils predominantly situated on hillslopes drain laterally to histosols (Andean páramo wetlands) mainly located at the valley bottom. Histosols, in turn, feed water to creeks and small rivers throughout the year, establishing hydrologic connectivity between wetlands and the drainage network. Runoff is primarily composed of pre-event water stored in the histosols, which is replenished by rainfall that infiltrates through the andosols. Contributions from the mineral horizon and the top of the fractured bedrock are small and only seem to influence discharge in small catchments during low flow generation (non-exceedance flows < Q35). Variations in source contributions are controlled by antecedent soil moisture, rainfall intensity, and duration of rainy periods. Saturated hydraulic conductivity of the soils, higher than the year-round low precipitation intensity, indicates that Hortonian overland flow rarely occurs during high-intensity precipitation events. Deep groundwater contributions to discharge seem to be minimal. These results suggest that, in this high-elevation tropical ecosystem, (1) subsurface flow is a dominant hydrological process and (2) (histosols) wetlands are the major source of stream runoff. Our study highlights that detailed isotopic characterization during short time periods provides valuable information about ecohydrological processes in regions where very few basins are gauged. Mountain regions worldwide present a pronounced spatiotemporal precipitation variability, which added to scarce monitoring networks limits our understanding of the generation processes involved. To improve our understanding of clouds and precipitation dynamics and cross-scale generation processes in mountain regions, we analyzed spatiotemporal rainfall patterns using satellite cloud products (SCP) in the Paute basin (900–4200 m a.s.l. and 6481 km2) in the Andes of Ecuador. Precipitation models, using SCP and GIS data, reveal the spatial extension of three regimes: a three-modal (TM) regime present across the basin, a bimodal (BM) regime, along sheltered valleys, and a unimodal (UM) regime at windward slopes of the eastern cordillera. Subsequently, the spatiotemporal analysis using synoptic information shows that the dry season of the BM regime during boreal summer is caused by strong subsidence inhibiting convective clouds formation. Meanwhile, in UM regions, low advective shallow cap clouds mainly cause precipitation, influenced by water vapor from the Amazon and enhanced easterlies during boreal summer. TM regions are transition zones from UM to BM and zones on the windward slopes of the western cordillera. These results highlight the suitability of satellite and GIS data-driven statistical models to study spatiotemporal rainfall seasonality and generation processes in complex terrain, as the Andes. Land use impacts on soil water content (SWC) are scarcely studied in mountain humid ecosystems, such as the Andean páramos, despite its influence on ecohydrological processes. Our objective was to analyze the impacts of extensive grazing on SWC of an Andean páramo hillslope with native tussock grasses. Along two parallel transects in a hillslope, we monitored SWC through pairs of SWC sensors placed at different soil depths (Ah horizon= 10 –35 cm; C horizon= 65 – 75 cm). The tussock grasses were cutout from one transect (Experimental) as an emulation of extensive grazing (without soil destruction), whereas the second transect (Control) remained intact. Both transects were hourly monitored for 10 months (post‐intervention period). Post‐intervention period was compared with a pre‐intervention period of similar precipitation characteristics to minimize the influence of precipitation in the interpretation of the results. We analyzed both periods through differences in SWC between the pairs of sensors (Experimental minus Control) and differences in SWC dynamic of the pairs of sensors through linear regressions (slope and intercept values). Results suggest that the emulation did not change the mean SWC, but caused a reduction of SWC dynamic. Causes of SWC attenuation were a lower interception and transpiration, a higher amount of effective rainfall infiltrated, and similar evaporation from the soil than under unchanged conditions. These observations were done at all the soil depths. Probably, extensive grazing does not negatively affect the hydrological functioning of páramo ecosystems, particularly its water yield, as long as the soil remains undisturbed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
