The visual analysis of multivariate network data is a common yet difficult task in many domains. The major challenge is to visualize the network's topology and additional attributes for entities and their connections. Although node‐link diagrams and adjacency matrices are widespread, they have inherent limitations. Node‐link diagrams struggle to scale effectively, while adjacency matrices can fail to represent network topologies clearly. In this paper, we delve into the design space of BioFabric, which aligns entities along rows and relationships along columns, providing a way to encapsulate multiple attributes for both. We explore how we can leverage the unique opportunities offered by BioFabric's design space to visualize multivariate network data — focusing on three main categories: juxtaposed visualizations, embedded on‐node and on‐edge encoding, and transformed node and edge encoding. We complement our exploration with a quantitative assessment comparing BioFabric to adjacency matrices. We postulate that the expansive design possibilities introduced in BioFabric network visualization have the potential for the visualization of multivariate data, and we advocate for further evaluation of the associated design space. Generative text‐to‐image models (as exemplified by DALL‐E, MidJourney, and Stable Diffusion) have recently made enormous technological leaps, demonstrating impressive results in many graphical domains—from logo design to digital painting to photographic composition. However, the quality of these results has led to existential crises in some fields of art, leading to questions about the role of human agency in the production of meaning in a graphical context. Such issues are central to visualization, and while these generative models have yet to be widely applied in visualization, it seems only a matter of time until their integration is manifest. Seeking to circumvent similar ponderous dilemmas, we attempt to understand the roles that generative models might play across visualization. We do so by constructing a framework that characterizes what these technologies offer at various stages of the visualization workflow, augmented and analyzed through semi‐structured interviews with 21 experts from related domains. Through this work, we map the space of opportunities and risks that might arise in this intersection, identifying doomsday prophecies and delicious low‐hanging fruits that are ripe for research. Propolis and Zingiber officinale have been shown to be specifically targeted against Helicobacter pylori strains, to possess antiinflammatory, antioxidant and antitumoral activity and to be used in traditional medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal ailments. Considering that these natural products could potentially serve as novel therapeutic tools also in combination with an antibiotic, the aim of this work was to evaluate their effect when combined with clarithromycin on clinical H. pylori isolates ( n = 25), characterized in respect to both clarithromycin susceptibility and the presence of the cagA gene. The results showed that the combinations of propolis extract + clarithromycin and Z. officinale extract + clarithromycin exhibited improved inhibition of H. pylori with synergistic or additive activity. Interestingly, the susceptibility to combinations was significantly independent of the microbial clarithromycin susceptibility status. Only one H. pylori strain showed antagonism towards the Z. officinale extract + clarithromycin combination. The data demonstrate that combinations of propolis extract + clarithromycin and Z. officinale extract + clarithromycin have the potential to help control H. pylori-associated gastroduodenal disease. The aim of this work was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of plant extracts as alternative and[sol ]or as active agents supporting antibiotics for treating Helicobacter pylori infection. The effect of either, ethanolic or aqueous extracts from 17 plant materials were studied against one H. pylori standard strain and 11 clinical isolates using a disc diffusion test and by evaluating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) on solid media. An inhibitory activity against H. pylori strains was recorded in a large percentage of tested plants. MIC values of ethanolic extracts were from two to four concentration steps lower than the aqueous ones. In particular, ethanolic extracts of Cuminum cyminum L. and Propolis expressed MIC90 values of 0.075 mg[sol ]mL. The results show a significant in vitro effect of plant extracts against H. pylori that could be considered a valuable support in the treatment of the infection and may contribute to the development of new and safe agents for inclusion in anti- H. pylori regimens. Background: Beta-blockers (BB) are recommended in secondary prevention of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), but adherence to prescription medication is a recognized problem. Most literature on the consequences of poor adherence to prescribed BB is limited by the possibility of "healthy adherer bias" and better-designed studies have been advocated., Methods and Results: We investigated the association between adherence to BB prescription and risk of subsequent AMIs using the self-controlled case series design, which allows improved control of interpersonal confounding, being based on intrapersonal comparisons. From all the 30 089 patients hospitalized for AMI in the years 2009-2011 in an Italian region we selected those that suffered subsequent AMIs at days 31 to 365 from discharge (1328), and then the 1207 that had at least one BB prescription collected at any of the regional pharmacies. Using information on prescriptions, each individual's observation time was then divided into periods exposed or unexposed to BB and the relative AMI incidence rate ratios (IRR) of BB exposure were estimated by conditional Poisson regression. The IRR (rate of recurrent AMI in exposed versus unexposed periods) was 0.79 (95% CI 0.69 to 0.90, P=0.001). Various sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness to possible failure of assumptions, ie, considering only first recurrences (IRR 0.76, 95% CI 0.66 to 0.88, P<0.001), excluding cardiovascular fatalities (IRR 0.76, 95% CI 0.65 to 0.89, P<0.001), and excluding individuals with long hospital admissions (IRR 0.60, 95% CI 0.43 to 0.83, P=0.002)., Conclusions: Adherence to recommended BB therapy was associated with a 20% reduction of recurrent AMIs, consistently with previous research, but with decreased concerns about healthy-adherer bias., (© 2015 The Authors. The viscoelastic properties of mono-microbial biofilms produced by ocular and reference staphylococcal strains were investigated. The microorganisms were characterized for their haemolytic activity and agr typing and the biofilms, grown on stainless steel surface under static conditions, were analysed by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy. Static and dynamic rheometric tests were carried out to determine the steady-flow viscosity and the elastic and viscous moduli. The analysed biofilms showed the typical time-dependent behaviour of viscoelastic materials with considerable elasticity and mechanical stability except for Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 biofilm which showed a very fragile structure. In particular, S. aureus 6ME biofilm was more compact than other staphylococcal biofilms studied with a yield stress ranging between 2 and 3Pa. The data obtained in this work could represent a starting point for developing new therapeutic strategies against biofilm-associated infections, such as improving the drug effect by associating an antimicrobial agent with a biofilm viscoelasticity modifier., (© 2009 The Authors. Aim: To evaluate the changes in prevalence of child-restraint correct use, level of parental information and parental driving behaviours in a population of North-Eastern Italy 2 years after a previous survey., Methods: A mail survey of 514 families with children <12 years. We examined the prevalence of child restraint correct use, level of parental information, parental driving behaviours and the concordance between the responses to the current and previous survey. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors influencing correct restraint use., Results: Habitual restraint use was reported for 92.5% of children. The frequency of habitual use decreased with increasing child's age (p = 0.0143). Among children 3-7 years, correct restraint use was lower than in the previous survey (p = 0.0039). Increased child's age was associated with decreased likelihood of correct restraint use. Previous correct restraint use and parental information on child restraints, and current parental seat belt use were positively associated with correct use. In the last 2 years, only 17.5% of families have received information on transport safety. Most parents declared to comply with traffic regulations., Conclusion: In our study area, the use of child restraints is common, although non-habitual use is reported, especially among older children. The information on transport safety is insufficient. Law enforcement and information campaigns could further enhance parental compliance with traffic regulations.
