Acute arterial mesenteric ischemia is characterized by the acute occlusion of the arteries feeding the small bowel and is considered a vascular emergency with a mortality rate of up to 60%-80%. Potentially fatal consequences of intestinal ischemia may occur during ischemia reperfusion injury, characterized by the interruption of the blood supply to the bowel, or when there is inadequate organ perfusion due to shock or hypovolemia. Further studies are needed to investigate MRI findings during ischemia reperfusion injury, as well as the role of MRI to monitor response to therapy after revascularization of affected intestinal segment.
